I haven’t seen Uyaniş: Büyük Selçuklu but I have Thoughts about what few things I’ve been able to gather from the stills.
- First off, I don’t think the costumes feel as authentic as those in Diriliş and Kuruluş - but I am not an expert on Seljuk fashion, and anyway they still feel more period-appropriate than the pseudo-Tulip Era throwbacks of MY.
- Second, they are very pretty; and while I don’t know whether they are really something Seljuk women wore, those hats they wear are absolutely stunning. Then again the costume design was clearly inspired by Diriliş and Kuruluş and those had really awesome headdresses.
- I am not sure if Terken Hatun is THAT Terken (aka Turhan, aka an awesome but sadly off-screen character in Alamut), but if she is, I love the way she looks. I give them big ol’ thumbs up in the casting department - looking at the Hatice Şendil’s determined expression, I am like, gurl, you can tear apart MY empire anytime. ;)
- I HATE the way they styled sultan Melek Shah and the character that Ekin Koç plays. Like, these are such insanely hot men, how do you make them look so unappealing, especially with beards?! Some dudes can pull off a guyliner and Ekin is obviously not one of them. Plus those braids are absolutely hideous.
- This is especially baffling because the other male characters look fine? Like they don’t feel the need to give everyone an extremely stupid braid, so why the two best looking guys in your cast get one?!
- THEY ARE HAVING MY BOI HASSAN THERE?! THAT’S IT, I AM NOT WATCHING. Nothing personal, it’s just that in my experience, turkish historical shows and movies aren’t great at portraying opponents of ancient Turks in a complex manner. And Hasan has been done dirty so many times, I don’t think I can handle him being portrayed as a one-dimensional bad guy (they are going to repeat that nonsense with the fake paradise garden I swear). On the other hand, he is played by Gürkan Uygun, who so far has mostly played good guys, so who knows?
- Nizam al-Muluk is played by Lütfi pasha of all people. Which is just... Generally funny.

On this day (4 December, 1131 CE / 4/5 Muharram 526 AH), the famous Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher and poet, Abu’l Fath Omar ibn Ibrahim al-Khayyam or more simply known as Omar Khayyam, passed away in Nishapur, modern-day Iran at the age of 83.
After the Seljuk dynasty had expanded into Karakhanid domains (parts of Central Asia) in the 11th century (CE) under Sultan Malik-Shah I (son of Sultan Alp Arslan), Omar Khayyam entered into the service of the Seljuks.
He was personally invited by the Seljuk Vizier Nizam al-Mulk to meet Sultan Malik-Shah I and was thereafter requested to set up an observatory in the Seljuk capital of Isfahan (modern-day Iran).
It is said that in this very observatory, Omar Khayyam calculated the length of the solar year to be 365.242199 days; modern science has determined he was off by just 0.74 seconds.
He is also currently being depicted in the new Turkish TV series on the Great Seljuks titled "Uyaniş: Büyük Selçuklu" or "Awakening: The Great Seljuks".

You warmed my heart in the absence of my father. And I will do my best to prevent you from feeling his [his son] absence.
