I really can't stress how much I know I feel like a broken record lately. I'm basically one of those hipster dbags wearing flannel in July, drinking PBR even though it tastes like sweaty socks, and talking in prose about 'it was better back when' about anything and everything.
But sometimes... sometimes it really was, especially with anime.
Just finished watching Date a Live from the beginning all the way up to the new episodes, even season 2 which I insisted I wouldn't. I will always say it - DAL is nothing significant, is nothing even particularly good, is just a title I've always really liked because it's fun and has some really original characters. The central story is actually pretty involved and well thought out, even though more than once it's strayed a little too far from and fanservice is overused to fill the void.
But the thing I think I like most is how no one studio has made more than one season of the show and there are four seasons now. AIC brought the world to life, and whereas I think they are the most guilty of focused ecchi - somehow with Origami especially - they really did Tohka justice. She's just nothing but great from hello. As is the entire cast, so many memorable and unique characters. IMS did season two and yeah... let's not go there, it was bad. But the characters were still the characters, just very flatly written and voiced, and the overall crafting was bleh at best. JC Staff did season 3 and it was a full-on revitalization - the animation was a massive rebound from 2, the characters were lovable again, and they really included everything they could from the source material to move the characters and story in an elevated way. Very well done. All three studios managed to keep the animation at least mostly similar, the character scores and music have been carried over - that military march when monitoring dates onboard Fraxinus is the epitome of the show's playfulness, I can't imagine episodes without it - and each has at least made an attempt to keep the characters true to themselves.
Until... uuuuggggggh, yes, here's where I say it - until now. Geek Toys is responsible for season 4, and I'm very not digging it. Every character not only looks the same, they look the same as every other minimal effort teenage here-and-forgotten anime that is churned out of Johnny Verbeck's western anime viewership snausage machine these days. It bores me how grievously plain it is. DAL has always had it's own style, now it looks like some 'Is This An... Anime?' release. They kept the music, so I'll give them that, but to the rest, why? Why change EVERYTHING now? Why simplify these decade-established characters and make them static af? Why make them indistinguishable from honestly every background character in every show ever? Why change an entire franchise SO MUCH? I know GT did the Date a Bullet spinoffs, which I admittedly never watched, but spinoffs are their own thing. For a studio that does not have many credits to their catalog, am sure they took this project on because of the fandom they'd inhereit (and because they were lowest bid lol), but so far am so underwhelmed that it's hard to even watch these goofballs I've spent the last 9yrs with.
I'll continue to give it a chance because I'm still a fan of this franchise, but the incredible prosaic makeover of everything is not my bag so far. I don't know why studios continue to do this kind of thing to a well-established brand, but it is out here in the world as-is now. I don't think it's fair to us as consumers, to the effort the other studios made to keep at least some semblance of continuity, or - and this one most of all - to the characters themselves, but it is what it is and our choice is to watch it or don't. And I'm sure I will in spite of it all.
But I mean, come on - we're two episodes deep in a new season and Fujibakama has yet to call anyone or thing lame. Did Geek Toys even watch the first three??

which final fantasy games have you played? do you like the series?
*breathes*I have played:
FF I and FF II (psp ports), FFIII (DS remake), FFIV (gameboy and DS remake), FFVI, FFVII (original playstation and recent re-release on PS4), FF: Crisis Core, FFVIII (original playstation and PSVita), FFIX (original playstation and PSVita), FF X and FFX-2 (PS2 and PS4 remaster), FFXII (PS2),FF XII- Revenant Wings (DS), FFXIII (Xbox 360), FFXIII-2 (Xbox 360) FF XIV (PS4) and FF XV (ps4). I have also player various off shoots including Final Fantasy World (PS4), ALL the Dissidia games (PSP), a random psp boardgame in Japanese that features FF characters, the original Final Fantasy TheatreRhythm and Curtain Call on DS.
Uhhh... I think that’s it?
Yeah. I’m a Final Fantasy junkie. That’s not even going into the artbooks I have, the limited edition guide books. The figures I used to own, the posters, wall scrolls.... I think, despite not being a particularly active participant in the FF fandom, it’s the thing I’ve been the fan of the longest, and the most dedicated.
I love the series. Each game is different, and while some of the games are disappointing, there’s always something to enjoy.
My top three are easily:Final Fantasy IXFinal Fantasy XVFinal Fantasy X-2 (IT WAS A GOOD GAME, OKAY?!)
I’m not a big fan of XIII, or X (I know, I know, that’s like sacrilegious to FF fans, but I hated the main characters. I just, uuuuggggggh.) Also not a huge fan of XII, but that was more due to aesthetic reasons that anything else. I think if I dug deep and sat down to really give it some attention, I wouldn’t mind it. There were just some design and appearance choices that bothered me.
FF XIII and the following games definitely felt like the weakest to me. Like, none of the main characters were particularly enjoyable for me, and I wanted to smack Snow in his stupid face every time he opened his stupid mouth. But I love FFXIV, and I feel like FFXV was a real return to what FF was always about. Epic journies with characters who grow and develop over that journey.
So much of my childhood was shaped by the FF games. Some of my favorite characters are from FF games, and remain my favorite characters to this day. I think everyone should play at least one FF game in their lifetime. Don’t start with 7, though. 7 is great, but it can be a grind. Start with something else.
I always suggest starting with IX. That game had the biggest impact on me. Every character has their own arc. Every character grows. It’s such a deep and game, it makes you think about huge questions of existence, love, family, regret, loyalty, devotion. Not one character is perfect. Not one character is a hero or a villain. I admit, the final boss comes out of left field, but to me there is no game in the world that is more perfect that FFIX. And, it’s not a perfect game by any means, there are issues with it. But by god, you forgive those issues for the engaging story and the characters.

Words can not express how much I hate Lux Bonteri. Like I kept dragging with finishing Battlefront II: Inferno Squad because I just.. can’t with him (the second he showed up using that code name I texted a friend to say “oh no, Lux is in this book, why this” because just... why) and I finally get to the end and just...
I mean he is still writing about having a crush on Ahsoka in his fucking journal post A New Hope?
It makes sense for him to still be writing about Steela, she did die and all while he was crushing on her, and he is with Saw’s partisans... but the fact Iden Versio can read his journal post A New Hope, and then talk about how he was once was in love with a Jedi?
Like are you fucking kidding me? He’s a married man, it has been DECADES since he saw Ahsoka, decades since the Clone Wars, yet Iden reads his journal and knows that about him?
What 40 year old writes in their journal, where they are recording details about a war currently going on, about a girl he met like three times when she was a teen????
That is sketchy as all get out.
Uuuuggggggh
#star wars spoilers#star wars#also how fucking empty was this man's marriage#that he is not reflecting on his dead wife at all#but instead on Steela and Ahsoka#like seriously??????#also him only reflecting on Ahsoka and Steela#feels extra sketch#when he is doing everything ~for love of his step-daughter~#anyway I am SO MAD he may still be alive#he is such a fucking creeper and I hate him#like it used to just be because he was like#enforced hetrosexuality made manifest#with no purpose or personality really beyond that#but he has given me real reason to truly hate him now

this distance is just really really getting to me. we were initially planning on me going out to see him at the end of may, then maybe this month and now it’s tentatively june. and honestly part of me is worried that that’s going to get pushed back. and i know he has a lot of weird circumstances to deal with and i try really hard to be sensitive to that but like selfishly sometimes i just don’t fucking care and i want to be together and ????? uuuuggggggh i hate this. i hate how much is up in the air at any given time and not knowing for sure when we can see each other again and it sucks. if june works out, i know that isn’t that long from now but i’m still sad and disappointed and i miss him so much and wish there wasn’t so much in his life that was holding him back from living how he wants to.
