whatever og text i had in mind for this post about ko shibasaki looking like sayama in this movie is completely cancelled on account of utsumi (this character)'s first name being kaoru and i only found this out cause i was looking up her name just to be sure when making this post
Tumblr media
like jesus christ i legally have to make this post now
#snap chats#they literally never say her first name in the movie. i think lol LIKE WHEN I FOUND OUT I WAS JUST 'NO FUCKING WAY'#i do have to be tbh and say her face /is/ a little more round than sayama's#and its absolutely predominantly because of how her bangs and wardrobe are so close to sayama's that i think she look like her#BUT I CAAAANT THE WHOLE MOVIE I WAS JUST THINKIN ABOUT SAYAMA... i miss her...#OH RIGHT THE MOVIE THOUGH noooo fuck you this movie was so good it actually made me want to write a summary for it LMAOOO#LIKE I LIKE WRITING SUMMARIES BUT IVE JUST BEEN SO LAZY ABOUT IT WITH THE PAST FEW THINGS IVE SEEN BUT GOD.#ignore the fact i finished this movie two hours ago i was too busy fiddling with a card holder kit but. ill make a post about that next--#THIS MOVIE THOUGH NOOOOO IT WAS SO GOOD //SCREAMS AND YELLS AND DESTROYS A SNOWGLOBE//#god the part where ishigami and yukawa are walking by the homeless and it just lingers on an empty spot.. LIKE I THOUGHT I WAS WACK#CAUSE I WAS LIKE 'hang on wasnt there a guy there last scene' and obviously there was since the shot lingered right#BUUUUTT WHEN IT WAS REVEALED DOWN THE LINE SHUT UPPP I LITERALLY YELLED IM SO GLAD. my roommates arent home..#on god i thought the movie was gonna end with utsumi and fukawa's convo from the beginning#and i was gonna make a gaf about how fukawa was acting irrationally because he was too in love LMAOOO#BUT THEN IT KEPT GOING AND. im so glad it did. ishigami valid tbh#id also cover up and take blame for AND ACTUALLY commit murder for a girl if she said hi to me and made me lunch while i was trying to kms#while fukawa and ishigami were talkin that first night tho i just thought of after the rain.. lol... maybe the mangaka was inspo'd by that.#anyway. this movie was great. it reminded me of sherlock but if it was directed well and actually let you solve the mystery too#CAUSE WHILE I WAS WATCHING THERE WERE POINTS WHERE I TOO WAS JUST 'hang on' AND I JUST POCKETED THE INFO FOR LATER#i kicked and screamed when ishigami was talking abut how he formats his tests LIKE I SAID 'oh you fucking slipped'#when ishigami called and told her he had a white envelope in there bitch i knew it was gonna be the stalker letter i YELLED#LIKE I LIKE HOW THE MOVIE SETS THINGS UP SO ABUNDANTLY. IT'S FUN SEEING IT FIT IN THE MOVIE LATER ON#the twist of there being two bodies was so fun tho cause at the start of the movie i was sure two murders happened the same night#so when it was played off as just one i was like Oh. Ok. im still stumped on how he snuck a body out of the apartment#but yk what one detail is like. whatever in comparison to the rest of the movie being fun to watch#god im running out of tags POINT IS. PLEAAASE watch this movie if you got two hours#ive left some minor warnings on my Watchlist doc but there's nothing. TOO extreme ??#i mean there's an aforementioned suicide attempt but aside from that it's nothing too grotesque. for an rgg fan ig#ok bye i have to ramble about the card holder i got <3

Bucchigiri?! Episode 7 Review - Utsumi-style Fanservice Episode
Why the sudden fan service? Well, it’s an Utsumi show; there will always be that one fan service episode. It’s a staple and a must. Bucchigiri’s seventh episode delivers just that. It’s not a serious episode at all; it’s just a breather for the viewers to enjoy their favorite characters having fun without having too many risks. It’s also build up potential future events.
Tumblr media
You thought Arajin and Mahoro would improve their relationship? Nope. They’re still the same. Mahoro is still a brocon and Arajin is still a simp for her and he still hasn’t gotten a clue. I do like how even though Arajin did a great feat of stopping the gang fight, Mahoro still thinks he’s creepy, a loser and nothing special. When will he get a clue? Possibly never. Though, the funniest thing about this episode is that despite how many times he is horny for girls, he still hasn’t realized that “group dates” and other gatherings held by Siguma are not with girls but with guys. I thought he’d learn his lesson after Episode 3, but I guess not. I guess there would be improvement if Arajin eats Mahoro’s dark matter cooking, but she’d never make that for him; it was nice to see Marito eating it when Mahoro left.
Tumblr media
However, despite Arajin’s return to being a simp, there is one good thing about him: his relationship with Matakara has improved to the point that they’re talking civilly now. Arajin is not deliberately avoiding him anymore and they even talk about Mitsukuni, whom Arajin knows too. Mitsukuni will be returning next week, which is most likely next episode. He was in juvie because he had beaten up a corrupt cop. I honestly can’t wait to see what Mitsukuni will be like. Matakara paints him as this brave and earnest brother, but I can’t help but feel something sinister about him. He used to be a part of Minato Kai, so maybe he has some possible connection with Akutaro that will be explained?
Speaking of Akutaro, his loss against Arajin has him no longer be the rulers of the streets as he’s seen cooking yakisoba with some of his goons. When talking to Arajin, he brushes off his knowledge of Senya, which is most likely a plot point for the second half of the show. Senya is shown speaking once, but he does appear several times; it seems that Matakara interests him. There are hints that he will possess him in the OP, so maybe it’ll happen?
The group combat date was hilarious. Since this is a show about delinquents fighting, there has to be action scenes courtesy of MAPPA. It was nice seeing what everyone’s power level is. I do wonder why Kenichiro pulled his back—he’s only 21. It’s nice to see that Marito is still strong. Please don’t nerf him in the second half of the show.
I think the biggest twist of this episode is the segment where Arajin’s homeroom teacher goes into that supposed cat cafe and NOT ask for Jasmine. Who’s this Pu’er-chan? Why have you separated from Jasmine? Did you cheat? I was as shocked as the cat boy receptionist.
Anyways, have some fun with this episode while it lasts because there definitely will be angst in the second half. I can feel it. I can smell it. I can taste it. Are you prepared? Will you be prepared? I am not. What are your thoughts on this episode?

Free! S1 + CD dramas > Starting Days/High Speed! = The Final Stroke > Take Your Marks.
Both S2 and S3 were remade in movies, and still...
> S2 didn't deliver, at least not what it was obvious they were intending to when they introduced it to us. They made Rin the cause behind Haru and Sousuke's beef but I don't like how he remains oblivious about everything. I love the joke there's between the seiyuus about he being the oblivious heroine... but they didn't need to go that far, lol.
> S3 was like a spin-off about Ikuya; even Haru (you know, the protagonist) was mostly a tool for Ikuya's and his relationship with Hiyori's development 🤌
And yet, Rin IS -once again- the cause behind Haru and -this time- Ikuya's "beef"... and, once again, they didn't have the balls to make the characters talk about it openly (because in this metaphor where Ikuya is ~The Little Mermaid~ and felt abandoned by Haru, ~The Prince~... that can only mean that Rin is ~The Princess~ "the prince" falls for and makes him disregard "the little mermaid" completely, given that Haru forgot about his promise with Ikuya and everything else after what happened with Rin, and he's all Rin Rin Rin when it comes to swimming and not only that 👀). Utsumi never hid this fact.
Instead, they throw hints here and there; flashbacks of Haru's state after everything that happened with Rin are everywhere (and it's in the fact that they made Haru have an "I'm not swimming with Rin anymore??" crisis 3 times + 1 chill version in Take Your Marks) as a reminder of that being the reason behind all this drama, even if it wasn't on purpose... they're there as a reminder of Haru having Rin as his driving force (I never updated this set but there are more scenes like these after S2). So, of course he'd just forget about Ikuya (I mean, ignoring that this plot is an afterthought in itself, it still works like this).
And don't let me start on the whole "hero" thing and how Haru and Rin are each other's -as Zakki said himself- but they also didn't go deep into it because it would keep adding more and more to harurin and harurin only; and, at this point... they did it well enough since S1 anyways.
SO. S3 didn't deliver either.
---
I won't pretend I don't love all those hints, tho... I love Rin being the root of everything what's important to Haru (I'm not saying that even it was thanks to him that he learned to cherish his friends and enjoy having relays with them, but that's exactly what happened; so, if you like Haru's relationship with any other character, you should appreciate the effect that Matsuoka Rin had on him... not for nothing, he changed how he used to see things... that's why there's even a melody called You Changed My Life and the impact of it is BIG when it comes to the way he started treating the others).
... I guess that it's the reason why, as weird as it sounds, I'm ok with both seasons. They mostly bored me, but that's it. The truth is that I'm more than content with Free! as a whole. And, while I was writing this, I felt like putting a lot of links because there's so much material! I had to restrain myself, lmao. But just to add one more:
Since I talked mostly about S3, I was thinking how I'll always find ironic that Ikuya was originally the character that made Haru realize the way he was actually feeling about Rin leaving... In High Speed!, it was Haru the one feeling abandoned by Rin's departure, but he wouldn't realize until he witnessed Ikuya reaproching Satomi she was "leaving him". Not only this scene presents a parallel with Haru's situation with Rin, but he thinks: "This is that rumored ‘lover’s quarrel’ thing. One shouldn’t interfere." ??? loool. It's almost subliminal...
Here's the whole excerpt: x
It's a shame it didn't make into Free! but, of course, it's more of the same I mentioned before. This is, after all, an spokon, right? *wink wink*
All these are about sportsmanship and dudes being dudes

Omg am I writing a thing for Tumblr? Yes I am but it will be sadly shorter than my meta of old. Maybe I'll write one of my huge posts after I see FS2. Probably a post mortem on my overall Makoto arc feels.
Anyway, we're here to talk MakoRin!
I realized I never really discussed the MakoRin moment in FS1. I know I've been kinda soured on MR and MHR post-DF. But I actually did really like this moment because it wasn't Rin helping Makoto, it was the other way around this time. And that was important.
It was a great callback to the awesome scene in ES where Rin wants to check on Makoto and see if he's decided on his future. I always loved that because I always loved how much Rin pushes Makoto to think more about himself and his own path. Not just about Haru.
This aspect was actually handled really well in FS1, where Makoto tells Rin that he's less shy because of knowing him and that Rin has helped him grow. And it's just such great validation of a friendship that once meant so much to me in the days of Utsumi's Free.
But even more than that, I really like that Makoto sought Rin out because he knew he was upset. And that Rin calls him on it, saying he used his intuition. It's really cute and shows they BOTH think about each other, beyond Haru. They have their own friendship too. ;;
I really liked that Makoto straight up tells Rin he's worried about him. Which gets the cutest "thanks" from Rin. Again, I just like them having a reciprocal relationship instead of Rin always having to do everything. That has long been my MakoRin complaint.
That Rin cares more about Makoto than Makoto cares about him. So I'm really happy this movie FINALLY showed that Makoto cares just as much about Rin. ;; I also liked Rin telling Makoto how much he means to him too. "I'm also really glad you were there back then, Makoto."
I like that Rin talks about Makoto supporting him in his own way too. (I would argue I would have liked to have *SEEN* more of this, but it's nice to know it was there.) It's just great to see them talk on this level with one another again.
It helps erase the gross taste DF gave me, when it implied that Makoto was jealous of RH. I hated that so much. So this casual friendly heart-to-heart was really good for my long buried (but still there) MakoRin feels.
And as always Rin still uses his chance to buck Makoto up, saying Makoto's kids would be lucky to have Makoto as a teacher. Just daww.
Of course you also have the classic Rin feeling comfortable with sharing his future plans with Makoto, a callback to Makoto doing the same with him in ES. You know, I love callbacks. So yeah FS1 was great payoff for this nuanced and often forgotten friendship.
It's short and we don't really get much else from them, but it was VERY SATISFYING and I look forward to maybe more of them in FS2. Thank you, FS1, for making me believe in MakoRin again. ;;b

utsumi said “haru and rin are the axis of free!” once and rhs never shut the fuck up since then
Don't particularly wanna hit this hornets nest ngl
But like? They are? They're the main characters? Ain't got nothing to do with how they relate to each other or other characters? Like Rin and Haru (and essentially how they interact with each other in terms of swimming) are like the crux of the show, there's be no plot without them, no story to tell if these characters weren't exactly the way they were and didn't have those exact reactions to each other's antics, especially in s1. That's literally how u write main characters. Like i genuinely don't understand what else this quote is saying??
But when Utsumi said:
"They have a “telepathic relationship” where the presence of one being next to the other isn’t questioned. This relationship hasn’t changed since their first portrayal, but I think their bond has strengthened even further over the course of the episodes. I think of them as being able to reach out a hand to each other, a relationship where the both of them need each other."
And when she said:
“I think the one who was always supporting Haruka from the shadows was Makoto. I think it’s because Makoto was there that Haruka was able to make it this far without stopping, that’s what I mean by my chest tightening at the relationship between those two”
And when she said in regards to "It's meaningless without you":
"At the beginning of production, some said it might be too much, but I strongly protested…"
When she literally said the following, with very specific words before this sentence that I'm not gonna repeat:
"I think that Makoto would be the other half of Haruka."
Like!! You can ship whatever u want, interpret these characters however u want but don't twist what Utsumi says lmao.
Anyway, if not canon then what the hell is this?? /j
Tumblr media
Also let's just talk about our interests instead of focusing on whatever other people are saying like genuinly idc what other's are doing, at this point idec if other's are chatting shit about my faves. You don't like Makoto and think he's done absolutely nothing for Haru? U think mh is co-dependent n toxic? You think Makoto is boring? Okay cool!! Have fun w that x
I'll just be here screaming about them holding hands??? Haru's literally holding on for dear life lmao look at themmmmmmmmmmmmmm they literally said 😏🤝🏽😁

Animage 5-2021
Tumblr media
Director Utsumi Hiroko
ADAM and Kikuchi
-How was the relationship between ADAM and Kikuchi created?
Utsumi: ADAM and Kikuchi are the most complex, and so the most difficult. At first I couldn't decide how to write them...... We gradually built them up as we constructed the story, so I feel like when we got to  the second half we finally had a clear vision of them. First of all, when creating a character like ADAM, you must talk about why they became this way. And so that was how Kikuchi was born, after that we wondered what kind of relationship they would have and it ended up with their current master and servant relationship. There has to be a whole story behind why ADAM came to have that personality, so that was the main focus while creating them.
-Is there anything you took into consideration while writing them?
Utsumi: What I took into consideration was the tension in his different relationships. ADAM is particularly difficult...... He has his public face of the politician, Shindo Ainosuke, and the "S" entertainer ADAM, but then he also has a side of himself that he only shows Kikuchi that isn't either of them. He would never spit out "Dog" in contempt like that in his other personalities. But that's also the time he's the most himself. ADAM isn't the protagonist, so the viewers can't really see all these things displayed out for them so I don't know how much they will pick up on these things...... In the fragments of the scenes with them you do see, these things slowly become revealed, so I'd like it if you tried watched without missing these things.
-By the way, in the ending "failure collection" the shot where Kikuchi blocked ADAM's failure with his hand was removed in episode 11 wasn't it?
Utsumi: ADAM has the dignity of a King and so we couldn’t show a shot of him failing. But I wanted to see it anyway, so in the actual story when ADAM falls in episode 11 released an alternative ending. Seeing his big fall in the actual story was so refreshing, so in the ending we actually made it a sort of irregular fall? For me, seeing that was like a dream come true☆ This ending only shows in episode 11 so I think that makes it all the more special (lol).

Which characters are confirmed to have canon romantic feelings by the creators? I googled but it didn't turn up much.
About Rinharu it’s everywhere, literally, in the directors commentary of s1, then in the magazine, where they’re on the festival it said that “Rin calls Haru his rival, but in his heart he has hidden feelings for him”(x), the director of photography called the australia beach scene the “infamous honeymoon”... I at this point don’t even remeber who didn’t adressed them without a romantic connotation.
It’s in the directors notes to the scenes too, like the one I used in this post, like s1 storyboards are hilarious, I don’t know even how Haru was even functioning... it was hella dramatic like “he looked at Rin and suddenly couldn’t breathe, his heart ached so much.. no, he can’t allow himself to go there, he had to swim for his team rn” LMAO I was like “are those scenes directions or a fanfiction?” xD. Tbh like I think many will watch some scenes differently after the notes and novelization, like the mackerel pool scene is still very surprising haha. But they’re mostly like “show, not tell”, so if you didn’t get that Rin talks about Haru with so much love and tenderness, like he’s the most precious in his world, then you’ll discover many new things and explanation to the scenes.
Btw the amount of cast and crew comments about wanting them to get it on already is hilarious tbh, bc like if Utsumi just comments about questionable things like Haru only accepting pleasure from Rin and about the glass shower in Australia, seiyuus are just going openly wild, especially Sousuke and Makoto’s with their dirty comments about rinharu bed scene and RIN’S FREAKING HARD ON, THAT HARU PROBABLY FELT WHILE RIN WAS CARRYING HIM IN HIS ARMS xD. Like Miyano Mamoru and Nobunaga Shimazaki are all romantic like “Rin is Haru’s whole existence” and “they’re destined to be” and “Australia is a perfect place for a date” and “Haru for sure loves Rin”, then everyone else is just already so done with this, they’re like “oh, they’re fucking” lol.
Anyways, just go to the rinharu tag on my page, there are to many stuff, open, hidden (not really tho), I have links to the sources everywhere, but there are just too many.
But also like... it’s in the anime..? “I can see why you’re so in love with him”, it has an exactly this meaning, same as “romantic, isn’t it?”. It’s in other things too tbh. So I’m just surprised like why ppl even need the commentary to some scenes. Also might wanna check the novels, novelization and dramas, bc there is no subtlty there at all. About the “lover”, dirty dreams, endearments, them being each other’s type, etc.
Also once again the sountracks during Rin’s ‘confession’ and bed scene in Australia are called “Longing For You” and “Wish For You” and they say that yes, “longing" as in “craving, yearning”.
As many mentioned you kinda can see that Kyoani mean them as a canon couple from comparison to some of their other works.
3rd one is Ikuya, but like I also don’t know how you can’t notice this in the anime. They said it during the DF panel, that “Haru was his first love”. His scenes were paralleled to Rinharu, too, like when he’s small and says to Haru that he wants to be like him and Haru says “pls no, pick your own way”, but in SD Rin says the same to him and Haru answers “I want to be like you too”. The whole season and credits tell a lot tbh. It was all based on how Rinharu ruined Ikuya’s life basically lmao.
Idk.. ppl really don’t watch it like this? I mean, they don’t hide it really. I mean in the series.
P.S. but pls just check the tag on my page, there are just sooo much stuff they said, I forget things sometimes. and like everyone gets their cute friendship comments, but never us no xD

Langa & Dating - Headcanons
Tumblr media
I wanted to post my headcanons for Langa’s dating history. This is subject to change (and if it does I’ll edit this post). These are based on the following canon facts:
Langa’s classmates find him attractive -> in the first episode there are several female classmates calling him tall and handsome
Langa is a 17 year old boy from Canada -> most teenagers here seem to have their first relationships around 14-15, and I feel like Langa would follow that trend
According to a Q&A with Hiroko Utsumi Langa is “popular but is the type of person to get dumped when he dates someone”
Langa has communication issues -> made clear by his current canon fight with Reki
Anyway here are the headcanons:
Langa is bisexual and has dated two girls and one boy (details to follow)
Langa has never really struggled with his sexuality. Being Canadian (where gay marriage has been legal nation wide since 2005) most people are completely fine with it, including his parents who were both supportive.
Langa will say yes to pretty much anyone who asks him out because he can never think of a good enough reason to say no.
His first girlfriend was when he was 13 (seventh grade). She asked him out at a birthday party and he said yes for the reason above. She broke up with him a week later because he hadn’t asked her on a date, and never tried to kiss her or even hold her hand.
In eighth grade (at 14) he had his first boyfriend. He was also the person Langa had his first kiss with (which was an incredibly awkward situation that took place in the middle of a department store). They broke up 3 weeks later because anytime his boyfriend wanted to make out (as 14 year olds tend to spend their time doing in my experience) Langa was extremely unresponsive and pretty much just sat there like a plant of wood.
At 16 Langa had a girlfriend for a new record of 2 months (proud of you Langa). She was his mom’s friend’s daughter that he’d known for a few years so he thought it might go better. He had tried to learn from his last few relationships so he did ask her on a date an hold her hand and kissed her properly (for the most part). She ended up breaking up with him because though he was physically there for her, he was an emotional black hole and their relationship didn’t go much past making out in her bedroom and that one time he sort of touched her boob.
Langa really doesn’t understand relationships and every time he was broken up with he felt like it was out of nowhere and he was under the impression that everything was going fine. He literally just doesn’t understand what you’re supposed to do in relationships.

Yukie, Noriko, Yuka
the neutrals!!!!!
Yukie:
How I feel about this character:
I know that I once held the title of Number One Yukie Utsumi Hater in the fandom but consider: I was a dumb 17 year old with critical thinking skills that needed work. As such, I don’t really mind her character now, and appreciate her character in Angels Border. I will still admit that I was disappointed in the novel’s characterization of Yukie, but it was nowhere near as bad as the movie and manga’s characterization of her. However, I thought Angels Border showed a side to her that I really admired- it showcased her more as a leader and her vulnerabilities. And, I will say that juxtaposing her angrily telling her father she’d die for this country if he’d sit back and do nothing, along with her death following the massacre, was one of the most haunting scenes in any of the versions of BR.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Haruka/Yukie: I’m not gonna lie, at first I thought this was just another best friend pairing (because they’re really popular amongst the 3-B kids), but after reading Angels Border, oh my god. Haruka’s love for her, along with the belief that she’d “taint” Yukie absolutely broke my heart. I understood completely why Haruka wanted to keep her feelings hidden, but I would have loved to have seen what could have been between them! Haruka’s devotion to her, and willingness to die for her, makes this definitely one of the best 3-B ships.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Yukie/The Neutral Girls: Slight copout? Still. I love the idea of her being mother hen to this group of the nicest girls in class, and of course, that really comes through in the lighthouse scenes, considering her willingness to round up all her friends and stay together in the hopes of survival- and if not- dying with her best friends. I would’ve loved to have seen more of her dynamic with the girls outside of the program- I can really picture her being a good friend to all of them, and able to help them out of any messes they found themselves in!
My unpopular opinion about this character:
I know that I’ve softened on her considerably over the years, but her movie/manga characterization was awful. I’m sorry, the fact that in a scenario where she survives the program along with her classmates, she would be willing to stop being friends with one of her closest friends over a crush is just so shallow!!!! Focus on y’all’s inevitable trauma and need for community/connection, how about that!!!
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
Relating back to what I said earlier, I would have loved to have seen Haruka get a chance to tell Yukie how she feels. It just kills me that Haruka was willing to die not telling Yukie about her feelings, and that’s exactly what she did!!! Which is so upsetting!!! Yukie deserved to know just how much her best friend cherished her.
Noriko:
How I feel about this character:
My baby!! Definitely my favourite female character!!! I absolutely love her for her emotional strength and ability to always see the best in people, even in circumstances as horrific as the program. I think she’s really underestimated for her bravery, like the scene with Yoshitoki in the classroom AND the fact that she kills Kiriyama is a testament to her strength.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Shuya/Noriko:
My fave BR ship!!!! I always thought their personalities fit each other so well, and I loved how both of them saw the best in the world, even at its worst. I’m a sucker for the trope of a couple bonding and seeing each other for their goodness and hope even amidst awful circumstances- not to mention, I just thought that they had a really cute dynamic with them awkwardly navigating their feelings. I would’ve loved to have seen what life was like for them post-program.
Yoshitoki/Noriko:
While I vastly prefer Shuriko, I also thought Yoshitoki’s crush on Noriko was so sweet. I’ll probably expand more on this when I get to Nobu’s section, but I’ll say here that I loved that Noriko risked getting shot, and standing up to Sakamochi, all to get him help. I would have loved to have seen more of their dynamic pre-program!
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Shogo/Noriko:
I’m a huge sucker for the tough guy being close friends with one of the sweetest girls in class. I thought their playful dynamic in the book was really cute, and I would have loved to have seen more of their dynamic one-on-one, especially that conversation where Shogo admits that she and Shuya are great friends to have.
Noriko/Izumi:
I discussed this in my Izumi analysis!!
My unpopular opinion about this character:
Can’t believe this is an unpopular opinion but anyways she deserved to survive. You don’t have to be a gun-wielding badass to constitute as a strong person, and I think Noriko’s hopeful outlook on the world and peaceful demeanour is a great thing. Also, I want textual evidence from anyone that accuses her of being whiny because bitch where!!!!
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
Honestly, I would have loved to have seen any version of BR delve more into her trauma. All three versions really focus on Shuya, but it’s really underdeveloped from Noriko’s perspective. I mean, her best friends all killed each other, and (in the manga at least), her family disowns her. I guess I would’ve loved to have seen a glimpse of life after the program from her perspective to delve into her trauma.
Yuka:
How I feel about this character:
I love Yuka! I thought it was a breath of fresh air to come across a character so lighthearted, even after so much time passed in the program. I really wish the novel delved into her character more, and it was so awful that she accidentally got such a harsh end.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Keita/Yuka:
I absolutely fully blame fan content for this one. Given their personalities, I could see them being such a good match- a perfect blend of idiots and fun! I think that they’d compliment each other well, and I could so see Keita being an absolute disaster when it comes to handling a crush on her.
Tadakatsu/Yuka:
I know this is only briefly mentioned in Angels Border, but I would’ve loved to have seen more of their dynamic! I can so picture Yuka being bold and open around Tadakatsu and teasing him at any given opportunity. I would have loved to have seen the two of them go from brash friends to a couple!! They would’ve had a really interesting dynamic.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Yuka/The Neutral Girls:
It’s hard to pick a single neutral girl to narrow it down to, but I love what we saw of Yuka’s relationship with the girls! I love the idea of her teasing them about anything and everything, and being the most outspoken out of them all. I think she complimented the group nicely and gave the group dynamic a bit more of a fun side!!
Yuka/Yutaka:
An underrated friendship potential for sure!! I can picture these two having a really light-hearted friendship based on causing chaos for their other friends.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
I don’t think I have any??? Every opinion I’ve seen on Yuka seem good thank god!!
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
That she could’ve stayed around longer!!! I’ll never forgive Takami for introducing such a fun character and then killing her off like half a page later.

Fate/Requiem: Chapter 1
Once upon a time, there was a great war. It happened long ago, before I was born. And then it ended, and the world entered an age of peace.
In the modern era, each and every person held within their heart a tiny Holy Grail, which was nothing more or less than that person's preordained destiny. And each and every person was capable of summoning a Servant allotted them by fate, in accordance with the guidance of the Grail.
Servants were an information resource by nature, accumulated throughout human history. Their souls were enshrined in the Throne of Heroes, a place which transcended the bounds of space and time. By 'downloading' them from this Throne, it was possible to manifest them in our world.
The shape of the world changed greatly after the war. This town was born anew - reorganised into city units, known collectively as Mosaic City. Among them was Akihabara, the Maritime City, which I called home. Sea levels had risen dramatically as a result of global warming, and now the city quite literally bordered on the ocean. The Kanda river's name was nothing more than a vestige of the pre-war era; in reality, it was nothing more than a canal through which sea water flowed.
This town was watched over by the Holy Grail, and not a day went by when its citizens did not partake of its bounties. Those survivors from before the war had been given the opportunity to obtain a Grail upon its conclusion, while those young enough to have been born after the war, like Karin, possessed one within their hearts from birth.
The Grail had brought immortality to the masses. The principal causes of death in the old world – biological factors such as ageing, genetic degradation, infectious diseases, viruses and malignant cancers – had all been conquered. By expending Command Seals, one could even manipulate their biological age. In this city, one of humanity's oldest, dearest wishes – eternal youth – had been realised.
But I was different. I alone stood apart. I was the only citizen of this city who had not been granted a Holy Grail. I had been born into this new world, but I would age naturally – and, eventually, die – with all the senselessness characteristic of the old. An irregularity, born outside of the sight of the Grail. That was what I was – me, Utsumi Erice.
With no Holy Grail, I had no Servant to contract with as my partner. Every once in a while, someone would be unable to stifle the urge to ask me how that felt. If it were up to me, I would laugh at them, and tell them that they'd never understand even if I tried to explain – but I'd been chided no small number of times by my master for that. You would be remiss to be callous in your interaction with your social environment, if you wish to live peacefully in this new world.
So, for lack of anything else to say, I answered them like this:
“Imagine you were incredibly short-sighted, to the point where you could hardly see, but you were told you weren't allowed to wear glasses.”
“Imagine being told you had to travel somewhere on foot, while everyone else was allowed to use trains and buses.”
“Imagine going somewhere you've never been before, only to find that the navigation app on your smartphone was an unusable piece of junk.”
The question I had by far the most trouble with was the question of how I survived day-to-day life without Command Seals, which were one of the bounties of the Grail. On that point, no matter how thoroughly I tried to explain, most other people seemed to struggle to understand my situation any more than vaguely, and ultimately had no interest anyway. That was the ideal response, as far as I was concerned. I could find no fault with that.
There were also those who genuinely understood, and responded with exaggerated surprise and sympathy. Some would offer me the usage of their own Command Seals, assuring me with fawning pity that I could come to them if there was ever anything they could do for me. There were even a few so selflessly empathetic that they claimed to truly want to trade places with me – although always with some condition attached, by which they could return things to normal if they so pleased.
Every such encounter reminded me anew that I was nothing more than an amusement to them. A means of flattering their own altruistic sensibilities, and of relieving their boredom for a little while.
Akihabara was a labyrinth in three dimensions, not just two. In a block nestled a comfortable distance from the downtown area on the middle stratum, bordering a natural public park, stood a multi-storey building housing a collection of public service facilities. Contained on one floor of this building was the classroom I frequented.
I had arrived slightly late for the start time, and hurriedly took my seat. The wide, fan-shaped room was almost devoid of students. This was decidedly not a facility for compulsory education; it was offered the people at large educational lecture courses aimed at fostering lifelong learning. Citizens of all ages took the course, and attending every single lecture was virtually unheard-of. Consequently, I was known as something of an eccentric.
The people here knew nothing of the battle of immortals that occurred last night. Those kinds of incidents never made the news.
Well then – it was time for Pre-War Human History.
That was the name of the course I was taking. Unfortunately, it could hardly have been called the most popular subject. The content of the lectures was much closer to trivia than education. The main goal of Pre-War Human History comprised learning about the human race's greatest triumphs and blunders in the world of the past. It was...well, to put it bluntly, dry.
In the first place, Akihabara was Mosaic City's premier resort. Students who were sincerely striving to learn, or families concerned with the proper education of their children, would simply up and leave for another district. I had an inclination that this space only really existed to entertain the interests of the lecturer at the front of the hall – my master, Ms. Fujimura.
Oh, it looks like that girl's here again.
I cast a quick glance out over the lecture theatre from my usual perch at the back. A small, familiar figure was sat in the very front row, concentrating intently on the lecture. She had come again today. As a rule, I never saw students younger than myself attending these lectures, so she had stuck in my memory. She was a pale child, short in stature, and perhaps old enough to be at the upper end of elementary school. Her voice and attitude during the occasions that she posed questions to the lecturer had given me the impression that she was female, but there was no guarantee. All kinds of people lived in this city.
Her had was invariably pulled down low over her head, and her eyes were covered by her bangs, so I hadn't ever seen her face clearly. I had never engaged her in conversation, and I didn't even know her name. She appeared in lectures once a month or so; I felt a distinct disconnect between her keen attitude in lectures and her abysmal attendance rate.
Today, her standing record for youngest lecture attendee had been broken. The new champion was none other than my companion: the stray Servant I had taken in last night, the golden-haired child. He was at least sitting in his seat for now without making a fuss, but he was fidgeting constantly - rocking his body to and fro, and sometimes lying down as though trying to savour the feeling of the cool wood of the chair. Or so I was thinking, before he suddenly turned to peer into my face, obstructing my view of my tablet.
“You think you're a cat or something?”
“...Ca-...cat?”
“Maybe you're more of a dog, huh. Your hair's all floofy.”
“Dog?”
“Yeah, a dog. You know, woof-woof.”
“I know dogs.”
“Oh, really? Well, I'm glad for y- what the hell do you think you're doing!?”
He had scrambled up onto the seat of his chair, planted both hands on the desk and begun to howl, loud and proud.
Awooooo! Ow-ow-owooo! Awoooooo!
He finished his surprisingly accurate rendition, flashing a beaming smile. I sat for a moment in silent astonishment – and might perhaps have thought for a moment that it was a little endearing, although this really wasn't the time for that.
“Hey, stop that! Get down from there!”
Give me a break. I was just about to give you credit for at least not being as loud as Karin, and you go and pull this. The other attendees were turning back to look at us now, searching for the source of the noise.
“I'm sorry. We'll be quiet. I'm really sorry.”
My master had stopped giving her lecture, and was cocking her head at us. The girl in the front row was looking too. If looks could kill, the glare boring into me from beneath her bangs would have dropped me stone dead. Although I couldn't exactly blame her for getting annoyed at someone bringing this commotion into a class.
Yes miss I'm so terribly sorry I won't do it again...ugh, what did I do to deserve this...
I had no way of knowing how to handle a young child like this boy in the first place – but that said, I also couldn't possible have left him behind in my apartment by himself. And I had thought to myself that I might learn something about him if I brought him here with me.
“Don't dogs say “bow-wow” in English, anyway?”
“Boh-roh.”
“Not even close. Must be nice to be able to mimic things like that, huh...”
Ohh boy. Starting to get the feeling I'm not going to be learning much from today's lecture...
I rested my head on my hand and pouted. Gazing idly at the young boy's angelic face out of the corner of my eye, I cast my mind back through my memories of my baptism last night.
It had happened on the previous evening, after I had been fished from the riverbed by Karin and Kouyou on the wharf. To cut a long story short, I decided to take the boy back to my apartment and put him up for the night, still none the wiser about who he was or where he had come from.
I had been living on my own ever since parting ways with my grandmother.
In a quiet corner of Akihabara, there was a small, depopulated district that most people avoided. Before the war, it had comprised a collection of multi-purpose buildings crammed to bursting with shops, but they had all been abandoned after the Grail's large-scale restructuring of the city. My apartment consisted of a room in one such building.
The inside of the room was decorated in Victorian style. Every inch of floor was covered by wooden floorboards, and its antique interior had been preserved unaltered. Apparently, it had originally housed some kind of dubious culinary establishment known as a “maid cafe”.
My apartment wasn't exactly designed for ease of living, but it was furnished with a proper bathroom and bedroom, and was more than sufficient for one person to live in comfortably. It even had a veranda, albeit a small one. From the window of my bedroom I could gaze out over a small vertical slice of ocean hemmed in by the surrounding buildings.
My opportunities to invite another person back to this humble abode were rare. Considering my job, the risks involved in freely letting others know where I lived were far too high. The only reason I had brought this child back with me was that it would have been too irresponsible to leave him to his own devices. I didn't even know who his contractor was; to have allowed him to freely roam the town would have been unthinkable.
He might have manifested in the form of an innocent child, but that only set me more on edge. I had allowed myself to be disarmed by a target's outward appearance before, on a previous job, and had made a grave mistake because of it. A Servant I had believed nothing more than an angelic young child - like purity itself sculpted in alabaster - had harboured a terrible darkness. The Avenger, Louis XVII. The incident that arose around that particular monstrosity had ultimately claimed not only the life of his Master, but those of a great number of innocents as well.
At the time, I had not yet fully graduated from childhood. Louis and I had been similar in stature, and I had thought we could have been good friends. In the end, however, my friendship and goodwill had been used and turned against me. That incident was not one I would forget easily.
There was another reason that I had brought this stray child back with me: I had been driven to my wits' end in another sense. Frankly speaking, I could not take it any more: the rank stench that permeated the both of us had become unbearable, and I could not bear to go another minute without washing it off.
The culprit was the oil slick near the quay that I'd had the ill fortune to be dragged through when I was fished out of the Kanda river. Petroleum-based waste oil, that had leaked from one of the boats moored in the harbour. I had hardly had the time to worry about such things immediately after being deposited on the wharf, but now that I had returned to my senses the discomfort was driving me to distraction. Pouring water over myself or wiping myself down with paper towels would do nothing to remove this - I needed a proper bath.
I had been stopped by a worried Karin when I had tried to totter my way home, still bearing a serious wound that I had no right to have recovered from so quickly. She had only seen me off after I had explained about the charms and such that I kept in my house. She was easygoing like that.
I had tried to invite her to stay the night here, but she had breezily turned me down, saying that she had a friend in the vicinity who would put her up for the night. Karin's social connections remained as much a mystery to me as ever. Although she had given me a rueful smile, saying that her family would be angry with her for returning home the following morning.
In any case, I had finally returned home, and could allow myself to relax a little. I looked the boy over once more, this time with the aid of my apartment's artificial lights.
“Hold on. Hey, no, wait, wait, wait! Don't just go right in! Just stand here for a minute.”
I grabbed him by his sodden scarf and yanked him back, prompting a visible sulk.
“Uh...sorry.”
So he did possess emotions, and the capacity to appeal to them. That would be useful, at least.
Both of us looked ridiculous, soaked from head to toe and glistening with oil. I was at least wearing swimwear and a windbreaker in place of my ordinary clothes, but his lot was a much more miserable one. I could feel my memories of the unearthly spectacle I had witnessed below the surface of the water growing more distant by the minute.
Alll-righty. I pulled myself together, and sank to one knee in the entranceway, looking over this child once more from top to toe.
He at least appeared to be eight, maybe nine years old. He was Caucasian, with the pale features particular to Scandinavian climes - although given that Servants were as much concept as they were genetics, any attempt to determine their race was close to meaningless. His hair was a pale blonde, almost white, and it had been left to grow freely.
His scarf was sodden, and hung limp around his neck. Or maybe it was a muffler? Well, it wasn't as though it mattered. It was composed of fabric knitted from some strange, gaudy material – it was hard to say if it was actual gold, or just extremely intricate needlework. His clothing looked to be made of cotton, and had a simple design, reminiscent of a Greek-style tunic. He had a small embroidered design on his chest, which I made a note of as a potentially important clue.
His belt and shoes were made of the same material as his scarf. The heels of the latter had a strange design; they were tapered towards the back, like spurs used for riding horses. I could have taken that as an indication that in life he had been some sort of knight – but nothing else about him gave that impression. He's nothing like any other Saber or Rider-class Servants I've seen.
His pale blue eyes stared back at me questioningly as I scrutinised him. I was seized by a sudden rush of curiosity.
“Hey. Do you think you could tell me where you came from?”
He smoothly lifted an arm to point towards the ceiling.
“From the sky? From Heaven? You don't mean from the moon, do you?”
He shook his head at all of them.
“I've come...from somewhere very far away.”
“All Servants have.”
“...Really?” He must have found something amusing, because his face blossomed into a smile, and he giggled. I was relieved at the unexpected ease with which I was able to communicate with him, although it seemed like he was still struggling to understand what I was saying.
His first words had been in halting English, but from the way he had appeared to be listening in on the conversation between me and Karin I would venture that he at least understood our language. If he was a Servant who had been summoned legitimately, he would have been granted a bare minimum level of common knowledge about the modern era by the Grail, as well as the linguistic capabilities necessary to express himself to others naturally. However, now that I was trying to determine his true name, that was only serving to impede my search.
As I questioned him, I produced a pair of scissors and carefully snipped a five-millimetre length of thread from the back of his tunic, which I deposited in a zip-lock sample bag.
“Would you mind letting me take one of your hairs as well?”
It looked like he was giving me the ok. He did as I asked, without resisting, and as I did he asked me a question.
“Have you come from somewhere far away like me, Eri?”
“Don't call me that. Did you get that from Karin? Alright, listen here. I'm not “Eri”, I'm not “Old man Eri”, and I'm not “Eri-pie”. I'm Erice. Utsumi Erice.”
“Hmm.”
He remained staring at me, giving me no indication whether or not he'd understood. His reaction was a little dispiriting, but I continued anyway. If I kept talking, I might be able to glean something.
“It's not all that far away, really. I was born in Shinjuku. I'm fourteen now, so I guess you could call me a middle schooler, but I don't usually go to school anyway.”
“What's a 'school'?”
“A school is...it's where you go to learn. It's a big building where lots of children all go. Or at least, that's what I hear it was like before the war. They've changed a lot since then.”
“You don't go to school, Eri?”
“I told you to call me Erice. And I don't need to. I'm passing my academic evaluations, and I'm getting the credits I need from extracurricular courses. And I show up for health inspections and such.”
“You don't want to go to school, do you?”
I grit my teeth. He'd hit the nail on the head. He was annoyingly good at that.
“It's...not a matter of whether I want to go or not. I...I have more important things to do.”
“You're alone.” He cocked his head, and then broke out into another smile. “Just like me.”
I suppressed my irritation silently as I tapped at my tablet. I was trying a search for the symbol embroidered on his chest, but nothing was coming up. Just in case, I tried accessing the city network, but no-one had registered any missing Servants - although it wasn't as though that was a frequent occurrence anyway. I could ask my master about any information that might be being suppressed on a public level, but I could hardly go blithely to her cap-in-hand. Not after I had tried to hide from her that I had disobeyed her orders and let Kundry go.
Even so, there was one theory as to his identity that I had managed to come up with. Spurred on by that, I decided to bite the bullet.
“So, which Servant are you?”
“...?”
He tilted his head in confusion. Was he trying to play dumb? It didn't look like an act, at any rate. It seemed that somehow, he really didn't understand the concept of a Servant. Was that even possible?
“I'm asking about your true name. Although your nickname will do, if that's better-known.”
Once, Servants would not have revealed their true name lightly, but that was before the war. In the modern world, it had become more of a question of personal privacy. No small number of Servants had origins that could complicate life in Mosaic City if they became known to others, and the degree of discretion necessary might also change depending on their relationship with their Master.
This boy likely wouldn't talk about his true name if his unknown Master did not wish it. And all the more so if he didn't have one at all.
“Your name, I said. Tell me your name.”
“...Name?”
“That's right. Your name.”
“Don't you know it?”
“...Huh? Don't I...you mean my name?”
It was supposed to be me asking the questions here. I was starting to feel that if I just allowed this wide-eyed child to talk at his own pace, I would end up the one being profiled.
Abruptly, he opened his mouth again. “There's something I've lost.”
“Something you've lost? What did you lose?”
“I don't know.”
I heaved a sigh. At the same moment, a sharp stench once more pricked at my nostrils.
“It sounds like you're suffering from memory loss. I think things like that can happen after summoning...? Well, anyway, there's nothing we can do for now. And I'm about at my wits' end, so right now I'm going to have a shower. I'll let you use the bathroom too, so go on ahead.”
“Show-er?”
“A shower. You know, like a bath.”
“...A bath?”
“Wait, you really don't know? Don't tell me you don't even know what a shower is? Hang on, have you ever even had a wash?”
He shook his head. Apparently he really hadn't ever experienced a bath. Although even if he hadn't, surely the idea itself fell under common knowledge.
Do your job, Holy Grail.
For as long as I had lived here, my bathroom had been rather chic. It had a French-style interior, and was easily wide enough for two people. The star of the show was a shallow enamel bathtub, pulled straight from a western movie. Incidentally, the bedroom was decorated in equally charming fashion, and was the biggest reason I chose this apartment.
The design was uncharacteristically luxurious for a department store coffee shop. Either the owner had been extremely specific tastes...or from the beginning, this building had been designed with less-than-wholesome purposes in mind. Probably the latter. Not that that had anything to do with me; I was nothing more than a grateful beneficiary. But it did mean one more thing for Karin to tease me about.
I gritted my teeth, and led the boy by the hand to the bathroom. He was still dawdling, unsure as to what was going on. I had him take off his clothes and made him stand in the dressing room. Then I set to filling the bathtub, removing my own dirtied clothing as I did so. He's just a kid. What's there to be embarrassed about? Nothing! That's right, nothing at all.
There was still an outside chance that he would turn out to have the mind of a middle-aged man, but I'd cross that bridge if I came to it.
“I suppose I'd better put my swimsuit in to soak...ouch!”
Agony lanced through me as I twisted my body the wrong way. I re-treated the injury to my abdomen, and covered it over with a water-resistant patch. It was still undergoing accelerated recovery, and it was warm to the touch. The wound was serious enough that with the treatment methods of the past, oligemic shock and acute inflammation would have been unavoidable. But this new world had conquered death itself, and treatments for injuries and accidents had not been overlooked on the way. Many technologies had been developed during the war, and now I reaped the benefits.
“It looks like it hurts.”
“Well, maybe a little.”
His eyes were drawn to the scar on my ear, and he screwed up his face.
“It isn’t nice, is it? Every thorn-prick makes its own hole.”
“...You said it.”
Was he worrying that I might be left with a scar, in his own way? If so, he was quite the gentleman.
“But it's ok. Kouyou patched it up for me, so it'll heal with time.”
For my part, I carefully looked his naked body up and down once more. This was a vital step in my investigation, and thus an entirely proper and lawful act.
He was...definitely a boy, yep.
Once I had painstakingly washed away the cause of the stench, I finally entered the bathtub - along with the boy, who was trying to escape at any opportunity.
“It's hot.”
“That's what's good about it. Ordinary Servants love to take baths. They're all very happy to get in. There are even some who have baths as their Noble Phantasms. There's one who summons this great big bathchamber, called Terme di Caracalla...”
“I want to get out.”
He was pulling a very sullen expression, but at least he was being obedient.
I can't see any scars on him. His muscles and weight don't seem any different from a normal child's, either. I found it very hard to believe that he might be some kind of knight summoned in their youth. When he'd said that he didn't know what a bath was, the first thing I'd suspected was child abuse; Heroic Spirits who had come from such unhappy backgrounds were too numerous to count. But he showed no sign of having received that kind of treatment, or at least not outwardly.
My confidence in my hypothesis was growing stronger, and I decided to put it to the test.
I stretched out from the bathtub. With the steam-clouded mirror as my canvas, I drew a picture of a hat with my fingertip. It was a crude sketch of an old-fashioned, wide-brimmed men's hat with a slightly indented top, as seen from the side.
“Hey. Can you tell me what this is?” I asked him hesitantly, my chest pounding nervously. It only took a brief glance at the picture before he answered.
“It's...a snake.”
I started. For a moment, I was lost for words.
“It looks like it's eaten something big.”
He'd answered my question perfectly.
“It scares me a little.”
Droplets fell from his body as he shivered and turned away. I hadn't even imagined that he might show such a violent reaction. I quickly wiped away the picture on the mirror, and found myself patting his head to try and reassure him. I could feel the slickness of his wet hair and the warmth of his body through the palm of my hand.
“What about “B-612”? Or maybe you could call it “Besixdouze”?”
“Yes.” He nodded in answer. No hesitation.
“You know it?”
“It's a planet, isn't it? But there's no-one there.”
I was silent for a moment. That's right. It's a planet. Of course it is.
“I see...so there's no-one there. But I think...I might know your true name now.”’
B-612 was the name of an asteroid that orbited the solar system. It was not remarkable in any way, save for the fact that it had been discovered by a Japanese national. It would hardly be included in the common knowledge that the Holy Grail bestowed upon Servants. But that asteroid was named for a novella from a foreign country, and the title of that novella was “The Little Prince”.
On a sudden impulse, I embraced him. In the bathtub, I wrapped my arms around his narrow shoulders from behind, and squeezed him tight. So as not to break him. So as not to hurt him.
“If only...if only you had been my Servant...”
He showed no sign of answering me.
Before entering the bathtub, as I was washing myself, I had checked everywhere. Desperately, I had searched to see if Command Seals, the proof of a contract with a Servant, had appeared anywhere on my body. I had strained my eyes in the mirror, checking my back, beneath the translucent medical patch, even the soles of my feet. But they were nowhere to be seen.
Then I was no-one's Master. I could not have made any contract with this boy through the Grail. I was just the Reaper, the same as I had always been.
In that case, what had that sense of foreboding been?
What had that trembling been in my chest? That sense that something had begun that would change my life forever?
In the end, it had all just been my own wishful thinking.
After the bath, we retired to my living-cum-dining room, where a mahogany table had stood ever since this place was a cafe. The boy sat in a chair, working his way through a lasagne that I had microwaved from frozen. I was recording the day's events, tablet in hand and a towel around my head, and I was blushing as red as his bolognese sauce. I felt incredibly embarrassed. This boy hadn't even yet come of age, but I had suddenly embraced him, whispered something that felt almost like a confession of love, and then ended up crying. While naked, no less.
His only response, after a while had passed, had been to furrow his eyebrows and complain “It's hot”.
“Is that good?”, I asked.
“It tastes.”
“Really? Sounds great.”
The samples I had taken earlier were on the table. Both contents of the zip-lock bag had vanished, just as I had expected. Separated from his body, his hair and the thread from his tunic had ceased to exist in their pseudo-physical form, and had reverted to being part of his mana. In other words, his body and the clothes he wore were woven from the stuff. That made for strong evidence that he was a Servant - but it was unneeded, because an easier way to tell was right before my eyes. The clothes that I had left on the floor of the dressing room had since returned to a clean, dry state.
The scarf that he wore around his neck floated freely, with no regard for the laws of physics. Even while he was eating, it fluttered gently, as though rising upon the wind. Needless to say, there was no wind inside my apartment.
He couldn't be the Simoun...could he? The poison wind?
The night had grown late, and I wrestled with the sleepiness and exhaustion that assailed me as I stared at my tablet. I thought back to the words I had exchanged with the Flying Dutchman, Captain Van der Decken. Every word of the warning he had given me lay heavy on my breast.
Until it became clear that our enemy was the mad queen, he had maintained a policy of non-interference, and only once had he commented on my methods. He had been cursed by a devil of the ocean. My lot was not too dissimilar - for I too was cursed, and possessed by evil spirits. Living my life beyond the sight of the Grail, I might as well have been a naked offering to them. But that was also the reason that I'd lasted as long as I had in this job.
I had let my guard down. I had allowed myself to believe that Captain Van der Decken and I might have been able to find an understanding, as bearers of the same fate. But he had seen through those naïve expectations, and had roughly spurned my advances.
“You have grown to feel joy in the act of slaying Servants, under the pretence of executing the authority of the city. Though you think yourself the master of your spectres, they in turn use you.”
He was telling me, in a roundabout way, that I was intoxicated by the idea of being a superhero. That what I had believed to be pride was in fact conceit.
“Someday, Erice, you will call forth a great evil. And when that time comes, that which you have clung to so dearly will instead force you to your knees.”
Unable to accept his words and fiercely ashamed, I had retorted with some frivolous argument - although I could admit now that it had just been something I had cooked up to make myself feel better. At the time I had thought he was just trying to put me in my place, but thinking back on it now, his words might have been as much in reproach of himself as they had been for me. His relationship with his contractor Aheseurus - equal in spite of being Master and Servant - spoke more eloquently of his sincerity than words ever could.
“Are you paying attention, Erice?”
I was brought out of my reverie by my master's polite chiding.
“You seem very tired. Perhaps it might be for the best if you took a moment to rest in the break room? I can prepare the lecture material for your perusal later, if you'd like.”
I let out a whimper. This was embarrassing. My second disgrace this morning. I shook my head vigorously. My master nodded, and recommenced the lecture in a soft voice.
Her name was Caren Fujimura. She was the lecturer responsible for this class, and also my master. I had known her for as long as I could walk.
Outwardly, she appeared to be in her twenties. She had light amber eyes, and wavy, pale grey hair that cascaded down to the small of her back. Her body combined a slender build with voluptuous Hispanic curves. Most notable of all, however, was her impeccable sense of style. Nobody else could come close to its audacity. Today, too, she looked sharp as a knife.
Or at least, I thought so, but waxing lyrical on the subject only seemed to earn me pained smiles from Karin and others. Well, it wasn't as though I cared anyway. If I was the only one who could understand her magnificence, so be it.
“...?”
The boy, who had been quiet at my side for a long time, had begun focusing on my master when she had spoken to me. Now he turned his gaze to the skirt of my school uniform, then to his own trousers, and cocked his head. He turned his head to make one more pass, carefully comparing, and then spoke with some conviction.
“She isn't wearing anything down there.”
“That she isn't.”
My master really was incredible.
It was not on account of her position as my lecturer that I called Caren Fujimura my master. Nor was it on account of her being my fashion role model. She was inhuman, in every way, and not in the sense of being part of the new postwar humanity. She was an artificial intelligence – an AI.
More precisely, she was the municipal administration AI tasked with the management of the Akihabara ward. A human interface that allowed the Grail to communicate directly with the people of the city. A hybrid intelligence – the most valuable in the city – born of the fusion of summoning magecraft, modelled on the kind that called forth Heroic Spirits, and cutting-edge information engineering technology. Such was the true nature of Caren Fujimura.
Ms. Fujimura's lecture on pre-war human history continued. Today's topic was the history and profiles of the great pioneers. Those brave adventurers who sailed west on crude wooden vessels, carving a path to an unknown lands. Those bold explorers who discovered – or rediscovered – the distant new world, and secured the shipping routes that would become the lifeblood of a global civilisation.
She spoke of Eric the Red, who crossed from Europe to Greenland and settled there. Of his son, Lief Ericsson, who made landfall in the northeast of North America and named it “Vinland”. Of the roots of the Polynesians, who propagated across the islands of the south Pacific in canoes little better than rafts, and were sometimes set adrift by rogue currents to journey thousands of kilometres.
Of Christopher Columbus, the conqueror who never once lost sight of his dream; who sailed to the farthest reaches of the western sea aboard the legendary Santa Maria, and there rediscovered the new world. Of Vasco de Gama, who crossed the Cape of Good Hope and pioneered the Indian trade route. Of the Cape itself - the southern tip of the African continent and one of the great perils of the Age of Discovery, where Captain Van der Decken's Dutch galleon met its fate upon the rocks.
She told of Ferdinand Magellan, whose vessels first circumnavigated the world. Although he perished before the completion of his journey, his feat proclaimed to the world beyond all doubt that the earth was not flat, but round. Through him, the people came to know that the world they lived on was just one more celestial body like the moon or Mars, forging silently onwards through the void.
And here too was the first captain to circumnavigate the globe: Francis Drake, the privateer! Ah, here was the magnificent Golden Hind! I had already been absorbed in the lecture, but here my excitement reached its zenith, my mind filling with daydreams of the open sea.
From Servants who had lived through the same era, I had heard tales that Drake, the admiral who broke the back of the invincible Spanish Armada, had in truth been a woman more gallant than any man. That the man who set the sun had, in fact, been the woman who set the sun. I personally found them impossible to believe, and I'd also heard them refuted by other pirate Servants. Stories like that ain't nothin' more'n piss in the wind, girly. Drake was a man, sure as my beard is long.
It was a common enough story when it came to Servants. Some ages of history had placed little importance on gender distinctions. Conversely, in others women had been so oppressed that they could only perform heroic deeds whilst disguised in men's clothing. Such confusion was liable to muddy historical records.
Even if Drake had been female, it would do nothing to tarnish the glory of her legend.
My enriching study time was now approaching its end, although I had struggled to focus on all of the contents of the lecture.
“I would like to give a brief introduction to one final figure. An American man whose one small step signified a giant leap for mankind.”
The screen changed in sync with Ms. Fujimura's commentary. Now it displayed a world of extreme contrasts: a sea of grey regolith, and the dark vacuum of space. Within the shadow thrown by a lunar lander, a figure in a space suit descended a ladder to stand upon the moon's surface.
“This was the first man to stand on the face of the moon. He, too, counts among the great pioneers of the human race.”
“...Eh...?”
A single voice arose, quavering not with wonder but with astonishment.
“A human went to the moon...? A living human?”
The source of the voice was none other than the young girl in the front row.
“Indeed. It would be fifty-six years before the modern day. Three astronauts ventured to the moon, and two among them descended to walk upon its surface.”
“More than half a century ago? There weren't even control units back then capable of calculating orbital trajectories-”
“There were.”
Another video resource flashed onto the screen. This time it showed a bulky copper box that must have weighed dozens of kilograms, and a small keyboard. The commentary indicated that this was the Apollo spaceship's guidance computer.
“Single-core, 8-bit. A most splendid computer to be mounted in the lunar lander. It likely had less than one ten-thousandth the processing power of the smartphones you all have in your pockets. And yet it was enough to guide the lander by autopilot, even though human error necessitated its rebooting just prior to landing.”
Ms. Fujimura sounded almost triumphant now. There had been a strange change in her expression, although it was so slight I doubted anyone but me would even have a chance of noticing. Perhaps, for an AI, it was a point of pride to be able to talk about the vital contribution a computer had made to one of humanity's most historic achievements.
No, that's not it...
She was delighting in the shock her student was experiencing, from her first contact with this knowledge. She was revelling in it. The girl retracted her body and sat back down in her seat, fuming.
“That's irresponsible. It's reckless.”
“Indeed it was. It was one of the most reckless ventures in human history, and precious lives were lost along the way.”
“That's all the more reason it could never have happened!”
As though scoffing at our worries from across the ages, the portly figure of the spaceman upon the screen began to moonwalk, gleefully bounding across the moon's surface. He was humming to himself merrily, like some shameless delinquent.
“Rather carefree, isn't he? One would never think only a thin spacesuit separated him from the zero-pressure vacuum and the hellish 110-degree temperatures outside.”
My master smiled faintly, as she expressed her admiration for the men in the video. Even when they raced their moon buggies across the lunar plain, they were rough and careless, as though they were driving go-karts at some amusement park. The girl at the front returned to gazing at the video, a flabbergasted expression on her face.
“Ah...ahaha...!” I couldn't help bursting out in laughter.
Her shoulders trembled a little. I'd picked an awful time.
The “Great Pioneers” instalment concluded by saying that although the human race had raised its flag in one great unknown after the other – first the new world beyond the seas, then the distant skies, and finally the void of space – landing a group of carefree delinquents on the surface of the moon had marked the end of their exploits. Not once since had they set their sights on anything farther. The Apollo generation's dream of a grand conquest of the stars remained a dream to this day. Mars, Venus and the outer space beyond the solar system remained unknown to the print of human boot.
I wondered if perhaps the human race had, somewhere along its way, lost sight of something incredibly precious.
I wondered if perhaps someday there might rise once again, on the edge of the farthest frontier, someone worthy of being called a hero. Someone who would lead mankind forth once more towards a new world.
“Hey, there you are, Eri-pie! Wanne grab some food?”
Karin burst into the classroom just as the lecture had ended. She must have guessed where I would be. I had thought she might have returned home after the events of last night, but she must have remained in Akihabara.
“Oh, it's you, Karin. I'll hold off for now. I've still got things I need to do.”
“Ehh? Hasn't your class just wrapped up?”
“Well, yeah, but I'm not talking about class.”
“Oh, the shrimp's tagging along? Good, good. You put some proper breakfast in him, right? What's he been eatin'?”
“Cereal. And some water.”
“Oh, ouch. You know that's child abuse, right? Like, I should probably be calling a social worker about now?”
“Just give it a rest, geez...”
I hadn't been back to my apartment for the past few days, and my reserves had all expired, so I had ended up with very little by way of food. I hadn't so much as forced cereal and water on him as noticed his interest in the food I was hurriedly shovelling down and shared a little.
Servants didn't typically require meals in the usual sense, but in the post-war world where they had become commonplace, more care was being paid to improving their quality of life. There were even some citizens' groups that insisted that they had a right to live the same as humans. In my view, Servants were fundamentally inhuman existences, and I saw those attempts to impose human restrictions on something unbound by the framework of nature as little more than evidence of their Masters' egotism – although I couldn't deny that might just have been the bitter prejudice of a have-not speaking.
“Sssssssup! Morning, Caren!”
“Good morning to you too, Karin.”
Ms. Fujimura approached the two of us.
“Karin...and Caren...?”
The boy looked between the two, confused.
“Yeah, you got it. Pain in the ass, right? The Caren in Akihabara has this kinda grown-up, sexy feel to her. The one back home is a lot more, uh...wha-chaa!”
“What's “wha-chaa!” supposed to mean? And you should be calling her Ms. Fujimura.” Karin had drawn one knee up to strike a kung-fu pose. I gave her a smack.
“Karin lives in the Shibuya district. The me who lives there is a drawer for a Chinese restaurant.” My master smiled gently. I wondered what it felt like, to know there were different versions of herself active all over the city.
A few elderly students were still hanging around in the classroom, chatting amongst themselves. My master ushered us from the room, and we relocated to a terrace protruding from midway up the building. This was a leisure space, and it commanded a wide view of the sprawl of Akihabara. At this early hour, the sea breeze was light, and the sun was not too strong. It was just cool enough that that shaded areas were still a little chilly.
The distant rumble of a train smoothly pulling in from the oversea viaduct drifted to us from across the water, along with the faint toot of its horn. Beyond the horizon, where the railway vanished, lay Shinjuku and Shibuya.
“So this child is the Servant with the unknown Master?”
“That's right.”
I had already informed her about the situation in advance, but I took the opportunity to introduce the boy to her in person.
“To tell the truth, I already have a good guess as to his identity. Although he doesn't really react to what I say most of the time. He doesn't seem to be entirely all there.”
I took the plunge, and told her about last night's discoveries – hoping somewhere deep down this made up for the regret I felt at keeping quiet about Kundry's flight and the events that had followed.
“Antoine de Saint-Exupéry...? A French author, as I recall, and one of great renown. He was also an accomplished pilot, and served in the Second World War. You believe this child's identity to be this Saint-Exupéry?”
The object of our scrutiny, the child in question, showed no reaction to the name. He took a sip of the freshly-squeezed orange juice that Karin had bought from a juice stand, and pulled a face. Sour.
“His appearance is a poor match, even taking into account the age difference.” I could sense my master checking records in the background, and cross-referencing them with the child in front of her. I pressed on with my next hypothesis.
“I think he's the Little Prince. Don't you think he looks just like Saint-Exupéry's illustrations?”
The Little Prince was an allegorical short story. It was the last completed work by Saint-Exupéry, who passed away at a young age. Whether online or in physical bookshops, one would inevitably find it in the children's book category, but it couldn't be more different to the fairy tales it rubbed shoulders with on the shelves. That said, nor was it something like the Bible, whose every line existed to be quoted and venerated. It was a comforting presence, like a familiar friend at your side, always ready with a lighthearted quip or a sobering anecdote. Or so I thought, anyway.
“Eh? So you're a prince, are you? Hmmmm? Now you mention it, he does look kinda regal. Think he'd make a good match with my Momi? She is a princess, you know. Whaddaya think?”
Karin pinched the boy's cheek, grinning wickedly, and he turned his head away in clear discomfort. I decided to leave them to it, and added to my master that last night the boy had answered my riddle with the keyword that only the Little Prince would know.
“I see...” She struck a contemplative pose as I continued.
“I'm aware that he doesn't look very much like Saint-Exupéry. That's why I'm wondering if he could be an author Servant who's taken on the form of a character from one of his own works. I'm sure there are examples of that.”
“There are indeed. Many authors' works leave a far greater impression on the world to come than the men themselves. Many more choose such forms of their own accord. However, if you would permit me my personal opinion - ”
She left a beat, pushing up her glasses.
“ - I would conjecture that Saint-Exupéry would project himself not onto the Little Prince, but onto the Pilot who narrates the story. It was, after all, his own experience of crash-landing in the Sahara desert that formed the basis for the book.”
“Ah...yes, I...I suppose...”
She was right. Given the content of the book, it was an entirely legitimate criticism. She was saying that this child was likely something fundamentally different to just some writer Servant with perverse tendencies and a strong capacity for empathy.
While I hadn't been watching, the subject of out conversation had begun sipping on a honey-lemon drink. He must have traded his orange juice with Karin. This was evidently more to his tastes; he was smiling broadly.
“I have conferred with the Caren units in the other districts, but he does not appear to match any Servant under our jurisdiction. I cannot even venture more than vague hypotheses as to his class.” It seemed that as an AI, she was capable of communicating with her other units in the background even as she talked with me.
So he wasn't a lost Servant who had wandered in from some other district. At the very least, we now knew that there was no record of Saint-Exupéry being registered as a Servant anywhere in Mosaic City.
“Please do not be disheartened, Erice. I do not mean to dismiss your opinion; the possibility remains. And just by having secured him, you have already done a wonderful job.”
“I suppose...”
“He seems to be stable, aside from his memories, so I will fit him with a classification tag. For as long as he continues to reside in this town, I will refer to him as “The Little Prince (TBD)””.
“...'Brackets...TBD'...?”
“Guess so. Would be a pain in the ass if he didn't have a name, right? Brackets, TBD.” Karin cheerily patted the Little Prince (TBD) on the head.
“Um...about last night's incident...” I straightened my back, and tried to change the topic to my report of the previous night's events – and suddenly my master stood up from her seat, looking at me ruefully.
“I owe you an apology, Erice. A matter has sprung up that requires my urgent attention. Would you mind submitting your report as a brief text document?”
“Eh...? I mean...of course.”
I felt relieved, but at the same time more concerned. Whatever this urgent matter was, this was the first I'd heard of it, and my master was not known for changing her schedule lightly.
“But what do you think I should do about him?”
“That was my next point. I am sorry to ask this of you, but would you mind taking charge of him for the time being? If his identity becomes clear during that time, all the better.”
“Eh-?”
My master's eyes narrowed into a smile as my mouth clamped shut. The already-unusual situation had just taken a turn for the stranger.
“No way, no way, no way. Isn't that going to be a problem? With my job and everything?”
“No other individual in Akihabara is so equipped to tackle as exceptional a case. To call you a specialist in the handling of Servants would not be an exaggeration.”
It would. It absolutely would. My specialisation was not the handling of Servants - it was murder. Restraining the most villainous of Servants, and keeping them under strict surveillance, I could do. But I was not nearly so capable of attending to the needs of a young boy, barely any different from an ordinary human child, who didn't even know his own name.
Karin chipped in. “Can't he just bunk at my place? What's an extra brother or two, anyway?”
“Quite a lot, I think...”
Karin's suggestion was extraordinarily irresponsible, but my master only inclined her head. “My thanks for your hospitality Karin, but I am afraid that I cannot yet say what threat this child poses. I cannot permit him to reside with ordinary citizens.”
“I'm tellin' you, it's cool. I've got Momi, don't I? It'll be fine!”
Karin dug in deeper, and my master responded with another polite but firm refusal. In all honesty, it would have been a weight off my mind – although I wouldn't say that the notion of Karin taking responsibility for a portion of my job didn't grate on me a little.
Just as I was becoming aware of my own troublesome misgivings, a newcomer hurriedly approached the recreation space where we were conversing.
“Caren Fujimura? If you wouldn't mind, there's something I'd like to ask you.”
It was her – the girl in the hat from the front row. She had run out of the classroom just before the lecture had ended, conversing with someone over her smartphone. She must have returned now that her conversation had ended.
“It's nice to see you, Haruko. Do you have a question for me about the lecture?”
“That's right. I wanted to ask about the role of astrology during the Age of Discovery-” A sudden squall blew through the terrace, and she clutched at her hat, pulling it down tightly over her ears. I saw my chance and hurriedly forced my way into the conversation – although really, she had been the one who had interrupted us.
“H-hang on a moment. I was already talking with Ms. Fujimura...”
She glared at me in silence. Her brilliant peppermint-green eyes glinted from behind a parting in her fringe. “It was only thanks to the repeated interruptions from you and your Servant that I didn't have the opportunity to ask these questions during the lecture.”
“Well, I'm...I'm sorry about that. But, well, you see, he's not exactly my Servant...”
“Is that so? My apologies. But as his guardian, you should be more conscious of your responsibility to ensure he does not cause trouble for others in public spaces.”
Her motions – her gait, and even the way she was holding down her hat - were clipped and precise. She was barely taller than the innocent child drinking juice by my side, but she somehow seemed many years his elder. Beneath the white gown I had seen so often in lectures, she was wearing a slightly old-fashioned bright yellow blouse.
I'm positive...I've seen those clothes before somewhere... Now where was it?
“Um...you mentioned astrology, didn't you? If you're curious about the involvement of magecraft in human history, why don't you go to the library? You'd be able to research it as much as you wanted.”
I'd intended it as a sincere and respectful recommendation...but instead she expelled a short, sharp sigh, and her attitude became palpably frostier. This was getting awkward.
“You're telling me to go to the library? That would be far less efficient than asking an administrative AI – I mean, Ms. Fujimura directly. I would have thought that someone who went to the trouble of attending lectures would be cognizant of the vast difference in value between the vague knowledge one can acquire through reference materials, and the clear and consistent explanations that can be gained through conversations with an expert in the field. And if you do not understand that, then I must ask why you insist on wasting others' time with your indolence.”
“W-what do you mean, 'indolence'...?”
“Well damn. Kid's got a mouth on her...”
Things were going from bad to worse - now Karin had taken an interest. If I left this alone, it could easily easily escalate beyond my control and into an all-out brawl. She was free to pick whichever fights she wanted, but I wanted to avoid any risk of worsening my relationships with other students and ending up barred from attending.
“Come on, Karin. Cut it out. I'm not mad or anything.”
“...Hm? Wait a second, I'm sure...” Karin looked as though she'd just noticed something. The girl hurriedly pulled her hat back down over her head. My master had called this girl Haruko, hadn't she?
“I too have important matters to attend to. I really do have to hurry.”
“I...I see. Sorry about all this.” She had come all the way to this terrace searching for my master, and I wanted to show some recognition of her dedication. In that sense, we were kindred spirits. “If I'm not mistaken, you don't come to lectures very often, do you? If you wouldn't mind, I could let you borrow my old notes...”
“If you're going to mock me so, I hope you're prepared for the consequences.”
“Eh? Did...did I say something wrong?” How short was this girl's fuse? I desperately looked to Karin for help, but she only shook her head as though to say there was nothing she could do. And then, in that moment -
“I think that's quite enough, Erice.”
Another newcomer – a woman, who had not been in the classroom – strolled towards us, calling out to me with uncomfortable familiarity. Her footsteps clacked on the floor as she approached.
“Welcome. Your arrival is earlier than I had expected.” Ms. Fujimura, who had been maintaining a position of neutrality in our argument, greeted her in an oddly forced tone of voice.
“It was your message that hurried me here, Caren. You said that I might have the opportunity to see something interesting.” She was dressed in a vintage black sailor uniform, and her long silver hair was left to hang freely. I knew this woman – this woman who looked so out-of-place in Akihabara, who clad herself in an elegant shroud of bygone days.
“Chitose... What...what are you doing here...?”
Now it made sense. Caren's urgent matter must have been her.
The girl in the hat must have caught my murmured whisper. “Chitose...? What kind of civilian could call directly on a municipal administration AI without an appointment...?”
I heard the rushing sound of an intake of breath, and she turned sharply back around to the woman once more. Now that they were standing face-to-face, her small frame meant that she had to crane her neck to look her in the eyes.
“You aren't...Manazuru Chitose, are you...? The Stigmata?”
“...I am indeed. It's been a while since I last heard that name.”
The girl let out a whimper. “How could this happen...”
Her reaction was so violent, I thought for a moment that they might have been about to duel it out on the spot. In stark contrast to her brief reverie, now she was tripping over herself to be polite. She scrambled backwards three paces, and lowered her head woodenly. Her ears were glowing bright red, and from the glimpses I could catch through her bangs her cheeks were similarly flushed.
One of her fingers brushed against the side of her hat. With a swish, it folded in on itself and collapsed into a hairband. With her face now exposed, she bowed her head once more.
“I apologise wholeheartedly for my insolence, Stigmata.”
Chitose only shook her head quietly. “You had business with Caren, did you not? I do not mind waiting a while.”
“I-it was nothing! Certainly, nothing of consequence next to your duties.” She was so stiff and anxious now, her haughty demeanour not two minutes ago seemed like a distant memory. It was actually a little adorable -  although in general, I found people's tendency to become so ill at ease in Chitose's presence rather hard to deal with.
For her part, Chitose might have been responding amiably, but that should not have been mistaken for warmth or compassion. Her gaze fell upon the boy seated at our table, and for an instant, her eyes were those of a serpent that had found its prey.
“Yes, that's the boy”, she said, as though talking to herself. “I can't even tell which class his Saint Graph is. I suppose the world is full of surprises.”
I confess - my interest was aroused, and I couldn't suppress a sadistic curiosity. What reaction would her gaze stir in him? Would he show awe? Animosity? Would he ignore her completely, as though erasing his own existence?
But instead – he smiled. A beaming smile, like a shining star. A clear window straight to his heart.
Silence reigned for a second, and then Chitose smiled back at him thinly. Next to me, I felt the girl with the hat flinch. And then, her expression relaxing into a slightly mischievous smile, she approached me, and laid a pale white fingertip on my shoulder.
“I charge you with monitoring this child, Erice.”
“Understood”, I muttered. She gave a small shrug at my disgruntled response.
It looked like our conversation was over. Once Chitose had made a clear decision, my master would abide by it. I stood up from my seat, bowed to my master, and accompanied the boy from the terrace as I'd been instructed.
“Who the hell was that?”, Karin asked breezily, once we were in the corridor. “Gave me the creeps.” Just this once, I was grateful for her laid-back demeanour.
“And what's up with you, anyway? Didn't you have something to ask Caren about? You sure you're ok just leaving like this?”
“It doesn't matter. Let's just go.”
I put the building behind me, as though I were running away from something.

Spring 2019 Anime Anticipation rundown
Whilst I finish writing my monstrous Fall-Winter review, let’s have a quick rundown of the new shows I’m looking forward to for the upcoming spring season.
Sequels: Attack on Titan 3 part 2, One Punch Man 2 (worried about the full staff rehaul though), and Bungo Stray Dogs 3. Nothing much to add in that regard, they’re all pretty high profile.
Must watch
Sarazanmai: I don’t know what’s the deal with MAPPA, ever since Yuri on Ice they’ve been pumping out unique stories one after the other, with great quality and visionary creators with strong points of view. Sayokan, Utsumi Hiroko and now they even got their paws on Ikuhara. I’m so excited to see a new original story from Ikuni, specially to see him for the first time addressing the male experience of which he’s always seemed to have a negative opinion. I’m seriously seriously super hyped about this one, the plot sounds cuckoo bananas and the style is vibrant and exciting. (First impressions of the pre-screening are coming out and everyone seems super hyped!!!)
Fruits Basket: Unlike American anime fans my age, I never watched the original Fruits Basket anime. I did however read the whole manga (and still own it) and I love it to pieces. Knowing how upset Takaya had been with how the first anime turned out, I’d never held hope of getting a readaptation, and I’m so happy and excited that it’s actually happening! I’m really happy that Takaya had this chance of seizing control of her own creation and having it adapted the way she wants to. Can’t wait to see it.
Carole & Tuesday: I guess this section is all about creators whose work I already like, this time at the hands of Shinichiro Watanabe and BONES, my other favorite studio. They also seemed to have gone out of their way to make interesting casting choices, specially the singing voices and I’m really looking forward to that. I also love the stylish production and character designs
Optimistic about:
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Although not as hyped as Neverland, I’ve heard good things about this series and the plot sounds interesting. I do tend to try out most Shonen Jump stuff anyway. I’m worried about ufotable’s involvement though, for all their visual pizzaz, all of their recent productions after Fate/Zero have been lacking in storytelling.
Namu Amida Butsu! Rendai Utena: It has fantasy elements mixed in with some sort of historical setting and I like the character designs. The plot sounds otherwise generic but giving it the additional dimension of making them characters from the Buddhist pantheon could make it interesting and educational. It’s a coin toss
number 24: This one was announced very recently and it looks like a quieter, softer take on rugby compared to All Out! Although I’m not against campy bombastic sports shows (hello I love Yowapeda and All Out), i think the trend of more thoughtful down-to-earth sports anime have given us real gems like KazeTsuyo and of course YOI, so i’m very intrigued by how it’ll turn out. Bonus points for being college-centric.
Curious about
Mix: So this one’s kind of a sequel of a classic and critically acclaimed baseball anime called Touch which I’ve never watched. It’s entirely possible it won’t be possible to watch it without knowledge of the previous series, but I want to give it a shot. Maybe this can be the anime that gets me into baseball, something many before have tried and failed at
Fairy Gone: On one hand the plot sounds like a cool fantasy concept, on the other for some reason it gives me Goblin Slayer vibes. I’ll check the first episode
Kono Oto Tomare!: I wasn’t initially interested in this one but i’ve seen a few blogs I follow showing hype about the series and it’s another music-themed anime -which tend to turn out really bad, with few exceptions. The designs remind me of Ao Haru Ride or Ore Monogatari. I’m also interested in hearing koto music and how much variety there may be for that instrument, as I’ve only ever heard a couple of pieces in my life and am not too familiar with its music
Mayonaka Occult Koumuin: I like anime about youkai and other supernatural beings *shrug*. The designs don’t look super interesting to me so far, but as you can see this list is quite short, so I may have time to check it out.
And that’s it for now, please let me know which shows you’re looking forward to in this upcoming season and if you think maybe i’m missing out on something!

My thoughts on the ending of Banana Fish and why I don’t think it’s that bad
This is going to be really, really long. (it takes 10-15 minutes to read at least no joke)
I’ve seen a lot of fans writing essays on why they like or do not like the way Banana Fish ended, and I really feel like I have to get it off my chest myself, so get ready for a long, sappy, over-poeticized post written by a sappy, over-poeticized teenage girl (whose English knowledge could use some improvement so forgive her please). Also, I had enough of some people on twitter running around saying that everyone who didn’t hate the ending is homophobic.
Some important things:
I do not intend to convince anyone. Everybody has their own opinions.
I don’t really want to get into long, pointless comment fights either. We have different opinions, and even if you think any single thing I’ve wrote in this essay doesn’t make sense then alright. Your opinion is totally fine and valid. I just wrote this essay so you can understand why some people don’t hate the ending as much as most of you do. (I hardly doubt there’s anyone out there who doesn’t hate the ending at all though)
IS THE ENDING OF BANANA FISH PROBLEMATIC?
Yes. I think this question was in @http-eiji’s essay on the ending (you guys go read it, it really makes you think, plus the idea of writing a huge essay on the ending is kinda copied from her): ”Even if you don’t think anything I’ve said in this section makes the ending problematic, can you see why there are people who do?” And my answer is yes, I do. I remember when I was first informed how the story ends I’ve read a lot of posts ranting about why Banana Fish is Bury Your Gays and how it seems to tell CSA victims that they can’t be happy. Now, I’m not an LGBT member, neither am I a CSA victim, so I don’t think it’s my place to tell the fans who are if the ending should frustrate them or not, because there are a lot of them who are, obviously, frustrated by it. And I can see why. Banana Fish’s ending can be seen as Bury Your Gays and one can see that the vibe it gives off is that no matter how hard you try to come past your traumas, death is the only choice in the end. At first my thoughts were pretty much like this. I was really, really angry. But I slowly calmed down as I was giving it more thought, and I realized that I couldn’t hate the ending. Or, at least, not entirely.
I don’t know too much Bury Your Gays stories, but I know that it’s a pattern that was most likely used in early gay stories: the homosexual character(s) often died at the end of them. And this must be frustrating for the LGBT people. But still, just because there are a lot of stories like this, it doesn’t mean that Banana Fish had to have a happy ending, other way it’s a homophobic piece of crap. Banana Fish had the ending the mangaka planned for it. She didn’t have to write a happy ending to satisfy anyone. It’s her story. She wrote it as she wanted, just like any other writers. I think it definitely wasn’t written as a “just because gays die in other stories so I’ll just kill him as well”, because it’s in character and it fits the story as well and it’s well-written, too. And her message for sure wasn’t that gay people will die at the end no matter what.
I personally don’t think it’s Bury Your Gays or a message to CSA victims that they should die, although it’s definitely debatable. (The first one, I mean. The second one just kinda…doesn’t make sense.) But to me, the ending seems so heartfelt and clever…I just can’t bring myself to think it’s BRG or a bad message. I do believe that it was logical. I think it’s so much more, and I hope that some of the people frustrated with it can find peace with it eventually at least as much as I did. (I sound like some monk talking about finding peace. I told you it’s going to be sappy!)
WHY DOESN’T THE ENDING SEEM LOGICAL AT FIRST?
“There had been too much emotion, too much damage, too much of everything.”
-Ernest Hemingway: The Garden of Eden
I always thought it’s interesting how Lao was the technical killer of Ash, but still he doesn’t get the hate he would logically deserve. Because it wasn’t any kind of murder. It’s said in the manga that he missed Ash’s vital organs. So, in conclusion, it’s Ash who chooses death.
Normally, I wouldn’t blame him. With all the things he had to deal with since his childhood, I would probably choose death, too. Even if it wasn’t the right choice.
But Ash is different. He’s a fighter. He might not fear death, but he never wishes for it either, as it is told by him. To me, it always sounded like: I’m not seeking death, but if I have to die, then so be it. Remember how he acted when he was stabbed by Arthur? He was thinking about how peaceful and gentle it all is.
But. Still. He has Eiji. Fucking Eiji, and it’s clear from that god damned love letter that he doesn’t blame Ash for anything, and loves him more than anything, and that he’s ready to live his life with Ash by his side. He’s not just ready, he wants it, for God’s sake! Ash is Eiji’s soulmate. This must had been clear for him, too.
WHAT KILLED ASH?
“Tired, tired with nothing, tired with everything, tired with the world’s weight he had never chosen to bear.”
-F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Beautiful and Damned
The things I’ve wrote in the upper paragraphs are the things that are usually said as reasons why the ending isn’t in character. But one thing, as I noticed, is always overlooked: the guilt. It’s clear to me that Akimi Yoshida had chosen to kill Ash because of the guilt he was bearing. She literally said that he died because he was a murderer burdened by his sense of guilt. (Although she said a lot of other contrary things in other topics, so I’m not sure if I should quote her. I still do it though. Just don’t take this as a fact.)  And I can feel that.
We all love Ash so, so much we hardly ever think of him as a bad person. But try to look at things from his point of view. I don’t think he chose death because of his traumas. I mean, maybe that was a part of it, too. But the very reason he chose death was his guilt. He killed hundreds of people. People he liked, people he didn’t even know. Good and bad people. He killed them all for his own sake, and while he says he doesn’t feel anything because of it, it’s pretty clear how much he hates himself. He bears so much guilt that no one should. Especially not a 17-year-old child. But unfortunately, he does. Guilt might be the worst thing in the world. It crushes your soul and mind. It’s the thing that makes you hate yourself the most. It makes you do and think things that are not logical, no matter how other people try to convince you. It makes you think you don’t deserve anything, and when you’re finally starting to believe in yourself, the smallest, simplest thing can throw you back into your self-shaming and blaming and hating. And it just can’t disappear. And just try to imagine bearing the guilt of killing hundreds of people. How could Ash think that he deserves Eiji? Even with the letter. It made him feel loved, yes (which is, at least to me, is more important than anything anyway). But it didn’t quite made him believe in himself enough. That’s a whole another process.
When he was stabbed by Arthur, he already loved Eiji more than anything. Still, when he was in surgery, the only thing he could think of was how he hurt Shorter and how he would hurt Eiji too, eventually. How he doesn’t deserve him.
The issue here wasn’t that he couldn’t have a happy ending. He could have, possibly without Lao.
The issue here was that he never even believed he deserved one to begin with, and when he finally started to think he deserves it, Lao came, and his fragile belief in the possibility of happiness crumbled down again. That might just be my theory, but to me it’s very real.
Tumblr media
“I...My body...it reacts like a machine and kills people like nothing. Without feeling, without thinking. I’ve never been so scared of myself or so ashamed.”
WHAT WAS ASH THINKING IN HIS FINAL MOMENTS?
“It would be better alone, anything is better alone but I don't think I can handle it alone.”
-Ernest Hemingway: To Have and Have Not
I think when he was reading the letter, he forgot about his guilt. He suddenly got a peek of happiness, a better life with Eiji. This is why he started running. But then Lao happened, and he was reminded that he doesn’t deserve that. That he hurt and killed people, and that’s all he’s capable of. That no matter how hard he tries, fate won’t ever let him have a happy ending, because he doesn’t deserve that. But the letter…the letter was proof that he’s a human, after all. That he’s loved. And oh God, how much is he loved. This fact alone was already more than he thought he deserved. But for once, he let himself chose a selfish choice. He might not deserve happy ending with Eiji. But he doesn’t want to keep on living without him either. So he decided. He decided to change his leopard-like fate, and rather than keep on living in the cold world of loneliness which he thought was waiting for him thereafter, he chose to at least die with the most precious thing for him, the letter in his hands, which made him feel like he’s not alone at all. A choice he believed will make him the happiest. So he went to the most peaceful place he knew. He read the letter over and over, and died with the happiest feeling in the world, with the overwhelming knowledge that he’s not alone, and that he is loved, after all. Hiroko Utsumi said it herself: the ending may seem as a sad one at first, but the last expression of Ash makes it clear that he was happy in the end.
This might be just something that we tell ourselves to make it less painful, but hey. We have to hold on to something.
Tumblr media
“Must be a nice dream.”
IS THE ENDING OF BANANA FISH THE BEST ENDING POSSIBLE?
“I don't care about truth. I want some happiness.”
-every fangirl ever before going on ao3 to read fix-it fics (just kidding. F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Beautiful and Damned)
Without a doubt, hell fucking no. And this is the rage part. Ash’s one of the smartest people in the world. And the police are kinda on his side. He has a lot of connections as well. So if he wanted to disappear from New York, he could. And that is the very reason the title is not: ”About why I love the ending”. Because although I do think the ending was reasonable and in character and that it wasn’t Bury Your Gays and shit, it could have been a happy ending. Because there’s no doubt: Ash’s way of thinking was self-destructive, he absolutely deserved Eiji. His way of thinking was harmful and stupid. I just wish he had the time to realize this. And I wish for many other things that will never happen with the two of them, and this why I despise the ending even if I do think it’s a good one. Because while the ending is beautiful, it’s really sad, and who loves that? Nobody. Alright, maybe I do. But I still hate it. When I think about all the what-ifs…I can’t seem to bring myself to say I simply love the ending and that it’s good as it is. I don’t think the ending ruined the story, it just made it…sadder? If that’s even possible. I can’t hate the Banana Fish ending…but I can’t love it either.
WHAT IS THE MESSAGE OF BANANA FISH?
“Don’t ever kid yourself about loving some one. It is just that most people are not lucky enough ever to have it. You never had it before and now you have it. What you have, whether it lasts just through today and a part of tomorrow, or whether it lasts for a long life is the most important thing that can happen to a human being. There will always be people who say it does not exist because they cannot have it. But I tell you it is true and that you have it and that you are lucky even if you die tomorrow.”
-Ernest Hemingway: For Whom The Bell Tolls
To me, this quote is literally it. I’ve been thinking a lot about why I can’t hate this whole thing. And it’s because it might be stupid and sad all it is, it gives me a message, after all. I’m not sure if Akimi Yoshida intended to give this message, but here we are. I have it. I think I can’t hate the ending because it hits hard. It makes me appreciate the love and happiness of Ash and Eiji. It gives me the vibe that Ash’s fragile belief in the possibility of his happiness, to use my words from earlier, might had been easy to destroy because of his guilt. But not his love for Eiji, which shines brightly even after long years of his death in Garden of Light. Everything can be destroyed somehow, but the most beautiful, innocent kind of love. That kind of love that gives you everything and asks for nothing. No matter how fucked up your life may have been, no matter how fucked up you might be, you can still feel love. This is the meaning of Banana Fish to me. Just like Eiji, I am, of course sad and of course missing him, but most importantly: I am grateful that I got to spend at least a short amount of time with Ash. The message, to me at least, I think is that even when you have literally nothing left, you can find something. And that something is more important than anything, even if it lasts for just a little while. Even if you die tomorrow, the thing that matters is that something. (But that doesn’t mean you should die! You should live and enjoy it because you are not guilty at all and you deserve it. Ehm. I’m talking to you, Ash.)
Tumblr media
that page of Garden of Light that never fails to make me cry at least a little bit, no matter how many times I’ve read it before
IN CONCLUSION
“I don't exactly know what I mean by that, but I mean it.”
J. D. Salinger: The Catcher in the Rye
This essay was never intended to in the and tell the readers: do I love the ending or do I hate it. I can’t bring myself to say either. I wouldn’t say I like the ending, because it’s such a neutral word for something that I have so complicated feelings about...But still, if I’d say I love it, that would just sound so stupid. How can you love something so depressing, even if it’s not necessarily bad? But I can’t hate it either. So I’m saying I have a love-hate relationship with it. It’s like with the mangaka herself: I love Akimi Yoshida, but she’s a bit cruel. But that’s not the point.
I think what gets me in the ending scene is how beautiful it is. It might be sad, but I can’t ignore how beautiful the words of Eiji are, and how peaceful and happy Ash looks. I really think that although this ending might make me angry and sad, it’s beautifully written, and although maybe it had other BRG works’ impact on it, I feel like it’s still really well-written and has a soul on its own.
So, is the ending of Banana Fish good? To use Blanca’s words, that’s something for you to decide yourself. Is it a boring, stupid trope played for shock factor and for the sake of tragedy? Is it a beautiful, unique, heartfelt scene with a positive meaning? Or something between the two? It all depends on you and your taste and perspective, as it does with every other form and act of art. Because, in the end, no fictional thing hurts real people, so from where should we know if our opinion is wrong or right? And I think this is why it’s pointless to fight over it. Maybe some of you still remember the thing that Literature teachers often tell us: there are always two people creating a story: the writer and the reader.
This essay was intended to make clear one single thing: to me, it’s clear from how Akimi Yoshida talks in her interviews that she doesn’t think the ending was that important. The same with Hiroko Utsumi.
In conclusion, I think we all give a little too much thought to the ending. Who gives a fuck about the ending? The love of Ash and Eiji was, is and always will be real, no matter what. No matter how fucked up the ending might be.
Because it’s the journey that matters rather than the end.

Final Thoughts - Banana Fish
Strap in, because this one gets complicated. Also, spoiler alert for both this and for 91 Days, because I can’t just talk about one thing, I have to swerve way out of my lane. If you don’t want to be spoiled or read a lot of rambling, I’m giving it a recommendation.
Let me start by throwing in some context. Summer 2016 saw the release of an original show by Studio Shuka (best known for the sequel seasons of Durarara!!) called 91 Days, a mob story with very deep homoerotic subtext about a boy taking revenge for the murder of his family by a crime family by infiltrating said family and becoming a close confidant to their leader, who also happens to be the insanely attractive Nero. His hotness isn’t especially relevant to my criticism, but like...
Tumblr media
Woof.
Anyway, mob stories as a rule do not have happy endings - they usually involve villainous protagonists that have to do very bad things in order to accomplish their goals, which are also often not very noble in intention. If they happen to accomplish something good, it’s a side effect. In the end, Nero becomes very aware that his new friend has been systematically destroying his family since the moment they met, and after a lot of bloody violence, the show ends with the two of them walking alone down a beach on an overcast day. They talk about their experience, and both of them know that despite genuinely growing to like one another, it’s far, far too late for this to end well. Nero pulls out his gun, and the screen cuts to black a moment before he pulls the trigger.
It’s fucking powerful, and the entire time I watched Banana Fish, I was thinking about that ending. While Banana Fish is a very different show, if you really boil it down, it’s also a mob story about taking revenge for the loss of your family, and the things you have to do in order to achieve such a selfish goal as vengeance.
Banana Fish ends up swinging a lot wider than 91 Days, ultimately, because it brings in a lot of even more adult concepts and handles them with varying results. Rape, for instance, is mentioned a lot as something that happened in the backstory of several characters (all of whom are male, though they weren’t always the actual victims), and it’s neither handled carefully nor is it glamorized. The main character Ash actually seems to have developed a complete lack of caring about his own sexual well-being from having been involved in a lot of child pornography, and many times over the course of the story he uses his body to seduce men he needs things from because his good looks and experience are enough to make basically the entire cast want him.
But the only one he wants is the Japanese college student who suddenly got caught up in his plans, and becomes magnetized to in a way he’s completely unable to handle.
Banana Fish is the single most queer-coded show I’ve ever seen that never has the subtext rise to become pure text. The author herself has stated that in all the time Eiji and Ash spent together, they felt as lovers, but never consummated that feeling. They do embrace intimately whenever they see each other after a period of absence, but even when they share a room, they have separate beds divided by a nightstand. It’s almost strange how sudden the stop on this relationship is, like after displaying a lot of male affection and even kissing at one point (as part of a ruse), the two of them suddenly no-homoed.
I think this is probably a result of the time period the story was originally written in - like I said in my premiere review, Banana Fish as a manga was published from the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties, in a time where the U.S. was facing the AIDS crisis (so media endorsing gay relationships between men were generally not widely accepted due to the massive stigma) and Japan was...well, Japan has pretty much been “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” for a very long time. So writing a story that goes right up to the line for readers that seek such things out (who were certainly there, BL as a genre is now a staple in Japan, particularly among women, whom Banana Fish was targeting since it was in a shoujo magazine) but doesn’t step over it was probably ideal for the time period.
However, I really question whether the author in question (Akimi Yoshida, just to get her name in here) was opposed to changing this position, or if director Hiroko Utsumi ever considered asking her for her input, because the story has been updated to take place in the present day, when being gay in America is not a particularly big deal, especially in New York City. I’m really afraid that it’s going to be a while before we get explicitly queer shows in Japan that don’t involve the tired aggressive, rapey seme archetype like DAKAICHI or even Bloom Into You, because this would have been a pretty good chance to try that out, given that MAPPA already made a show two years ago that also toed the line without ever actually showing Yuri and Victor being together on camera (and no, even the kiss doesn’t count, they deliberately cut away from it).
We also have to deal with the fact that these stories don’t have happy endings.
After the conflict is over, and after resolving to never see Eiji again for his safety, Ash is given a letter from him that contains a plane ticket and a heartfelt plea to understand that Eiji was never afraid of his partner despite all of the violence he had been involved in, Ash begins to run to the airport, towards his happy ending...and is murdered, because cosmically that’s what he had earned. While I fully approve of this as an ending, it is still pretty firmly an example of Burying Your Gays, and warrants a lot of scrutiny because of that.
Basically, I’m not sure how I feel about it and I don’t know that I ever will be.
But now that I’ve gotten all of that off of my chest, Banana Fish is a terrifically-plotted mob action story that seems to have gotten a lot of love and passion out of studio MAPPA, easily comparable to Yuri On Ice!!! from 2016. The action is brutal and satisfying, the twists are fantastic and kept me guessing right till the end, and the entire thing plays out much like a Shakespearean tragedy. I just wanted to express my disappointment that in a show as well-written as this one, with critically acclaimed source material, Banana Fish couldn’t take the one extra step that would have made its finale that much more meaningful, because I was sick to death by the end by all the emphasis on what good friends its leads were.
8/10!

[Review] Kamen Rider Build - Episodes 47-49
This is it, folks - the final chapter. Or rather, the final three episodes of the show. We've got a lot to dissect, so let's get to it.
Tumblr media
Episode 47: "A Zero Degree Flame" (ゼロ度の炎)
After the most painful week of waiting, we're back to Grease in his new Grease Blizzard form, which we know now is such a powerful form that it could kill him. As he's tearing down the Lost Smash doppelgangers, Sento, Ryuga and Gentoku make their way to another floor where  doppelgangers of Remocon Bro and Engine Bro are waiting - Gentoku decides to stay behind and fight them himself, allowing Sento and Ryuga to progress through Pandora Tower.
Misora and Sawa show up with their Pandora's Box, realizing that Grease is using a new form with Shinobu's missing Build Driver. The two of them know exactly what this means for Grease, so Misora tells Sawa to keep going without her.
Rogue has difficulty taking on the gear bros, which is fair since he's now dealing with Evolt-level copies. MadRogue steps in, and while Rogue wants to be cocky against him, we learn what's really going on with MadRogue. He suddenly turns on the gear bros, revealing that he joined Evolt specifically to gain an edge since the Rider System didn't seem like it would be enough to beat him - not only that, but he wanted to avenge President Namba. As far as Rogue is concerned, they can both achieve their dreams together, so the Rogue boys team up!
Even together, they don't do a great job of taking on the combined form, so it's a good thing Sawa showed up with Pandora's Box! As it turns out, the call from "Namba" earlier was Utsumi arranging for the girls to show up with the bottles, and I love how this one line fixes any weakness in Utsumi's character: He's loyal to Namba. He never went crazy seeing the president's death, he stayed loyal. That's super interesting, especially since it means he's now an ally instead of an enemy. And the connection to Sawa makes it even better.
The plan was for MadRogue to exploit a weakness in the Kaiser System. The Same and Bike Fullbottles are specially designed to neutralize the system's attacks, which is a nice callback to the YouTube spinoff. They use finishers to deal with the gear bros, defeating them. Then Evolt's DNA leaves them, reforming as Soichi and demanding the Lost Fullbottle they got from that pair of mimics.
Meanwhile, Grease Blizzard is continuing his assault on the Lost Smash trio, practically losing control. However, he pauses once he starts letting off an aura that occurs with any Hazard Level carrier who's on the brink of death. Misora begs for him to stop but he figures this can only end one way for him. Sento and Ryuga catch this fight on a TV in the tower, and Ryuga questions why he'd invent such a dangerous weapon for Kazumi to use, because they both know where this is going - nothing left to do but continue traversing the tower.
Back with the others, MadRogue takes on Evol and reveals that he stayed with him this long so that he could input data from HIS belt. Then MadRogue starts charging up, apparently achieving the various Phases of power Evol had, then unleashes a quick barrage of attacks that legitimately shock him.
Speaking of legitimate shock, before MadRogue can deal the final blow to avenge Namba, he... starts to short circuit. His suit dematerializing, Utsumi falls to the ground with sparks coming from his chest. This is when Evol nonchalantly remarks "Oh right, you're a cyborg." EXCUSE YOU?
When Gentoku had Utsumi pose as Night Rogue... that shot in his shoulder, which caused him to fall off a bridge, was actually fatal enough that he was turned into a cyborg. That-- Wow. Okay, that's a pretty damn good twist, which once again fixes a slight nitpick of "He sure recovered well from that presumed death". And those motherfuckers made a cold opening where they joked about him being a robot! Did they make a joke then turn it into a plot point, or is this some Steven Universe foreshadow-trolling? Anyway, cool stuff.
With Utsumi seemingly dead now, Rogue tries his best to avenge him, but Evol sends him flying. With Gentoku lying before Sawa, Evol comes towards them with an attack, when Utsumi gets in the way and takes the hit for them, claiming he isn't doing this for them - he's doing it for the bottles. Gentoku and Sawa make a quick escape using the Nebula Steam Gun, leaving Evol mighty miffed.
I should take a moment and put what I said all into one paragraph: Utsumi was an interesting character to see develop. I thought it was nice seeing him come back, was totally hoping he'd become Kamen Rider Rogue due to the irony of it all, and was delighted to see him become MadRogue. Even so, his turn as a villain felt weird and kinda forced in retrospect, as did the presumed death and subsequent return - it's fascinating how this episode cleanly deals with both things and at the same time turns him into more of a heroic character, even if one that's been raised by a cult. And the cyborg thing is a nice return to Kamen Rider's origins, even if it's such a brief reveal. May he be missed.
... On a related note, back to Grease Blizzard. He finishes off the Lost Smash trio, claiming he's ready to hang out with his bros... on the other side. With all of them gone, his suit dematerializes, and that death aura ain't lifting anytime soon. He gives Misora the Lost Fullbottle he had, and it's here they have their final words. Misora still calls him Grease, and she reveals that she never wanted to call him by his real name, presumably so she didn't get to attached - it's... kind of fair since he always calls her Mii-tan.
Misora begs for him to live, and now even Kazumi is starting to tear up, because hey, his waifu is rooting for him, how lucky can a guy get? He decides he'd better brag to his boys on the other side, so... he disappears, leaving Misora to utter "Kazumin..." Wow. </3
So, Kazumi was great. I loved the actor in Kiva so I had an immediate attachment, and I feel he played a pretty superior character here - one with more depth and an interesting change in personality as the world around him changed.
But a pretty unfortunate flaw of this episode is that his death was basically spelled out from the beginning, and we had to wait a week to see it happen, so by this point the impact was not as strong as it could’ve been. It might’ve been better if Sento introduced him to his new weapon by saying it’s powerful “as is”, and having Kazumi remark to himself how it looks like the Magma Knuckle. Then when he steals the Build Driver, it’s more of an epic cliffhanger. The preview showing his death could have been framed in such a way that maybe his new form wasn’t strong enough, with the twist being that the form was what killed him.
I dunno, maybe I’m over-analyzing at this point. I just feel that the week long break hurt the impact of what they had written. Plus Utsumi’s whole twist and death kinda overshadows it since I did not see any of that coming.
Moving on... now we're in the area Evolt was in, which I guess is meant to be part of Pandora Tower even though there's no walls to be seen. The gang is all together and pretty somber after presumably learning what happened with Utsumi. It gets worse when Misora silently approaches, handing Sento the Lost Fullbottle and telling them the news...
... and it's at this point I found the scene sad and beautiful. All you hear is the wind - everyone is muted for dramatic effect, and each of them is reacting to what you assume is "Kazumi is dead." It sinks in, and they all break down. Misora falls to her knees, Sawa comforts her as she cries, Ryuga punches stone with a look of disbelief and anger, Gentoku straight up screams in despair... and Sento silently broods.
Then Soichi breaks the silence with "Yo!" and Sento turns, screaming Evolt's name. END OF EPISODE. Fucking stunning.
Tumblr media
Episode 48: "For a World of Love & Peace" (ラブ&ピースの世界へ)
Time for an entire episode of fighting! Everyone does their best to take Evol on, and we also get to learn what Sento wanted to tell Ryuga before at their cookout: Only Ryuga can save their world because he has the Evolt DNA to make stuff happen with the white panel. He starts using the Hazard Trigger with his Cross-Z Magma form, gets in some good hits, but in the end, Evol is still too strong.
Eventually, Evol manages to get back the two bottles and return to his final monster form, which is BAD. Evolt opens up a black hole which absorbs their goddamn moon, which... actually probably won't affect them in the long run according to Dragon Ball. But he also starts tearing at the Earth, which is definitely going to be a problem.
When Misora is begging for Vernage's help, Evolt tries to destroy her, only for Rogue to take the hit for her. He's already getting that death aura, but he takes Evolt head on.
We also once again come back to that cookout where Kazumi talked to Gentoku about being a political figure once this was all over, and... at this point I understood Gentoku - even after all he's doing to save the world, he feels like he's yet to really make up for who he was, and that's pretty damn interesting since he was under some nebula gas influence until becoming a hero. Even more interesting is the fact that Kazumi says he's forgiven Gentoku for everything, and that's pretty big of him to do. No wonder Gentoku reacted to his death so intensely...
Rogue, unfortunately, bites off more than he can chew as he tries to fight a god mode Evolt. His helmet gets broken, which only makes things look even more grim - as he seems to be falling, however, the people of the city are screaming and cheering for the Kamen Riders, which I must say, is goddamn powerful. Rogue is living by his father's words: It's not about the person in power, is about the people who put them in power. MANLY TEARS MOMENT.
While his attacks seem to be amounting to little, Rogue seems to be onto something with attacking Evolt's Evol Trigger. However... he can't fight his fate, and ultimately his transformation disengages, leaving a weakened Gentoku to question... did he measure up to his father at all after this? With a beautiful shot where Rogue's shadow can be seen on the wall next to him, Gentoku fades away...
I'll be honest, this character started out as a bit of a nothing character to me. I've said it before: After episode 1, there were at least 1-2 people telling me every week, if not every other day, that Gentoku is gonna turn out to be Night Rogue. It was obvious, and I found Blood Stalk more interesting. To me Night Rogue seemed like one of THOSE Rider villains: The one who's gonna stick around until the hero gets their first power-up form, then gets killed off. Phoenix, Javert, Graphite, just characters made to be a really strong obstacle that makes the power-up more impressive. I didn’t invest in him for that reason.
But Gentoku stuck around. He disappeared for a bit, then came back as the grim Kamen Rider Rogue. And while he was very cool visually, I described that period as "Comically edgy Gentoku" because he was just leaning too far into grim territory. But once we got the implication that he was starting to lose that nebula gas edge, and was starting to show some heroism, then he got interesting. I mean, maybe they could have used at least one line to explain his turn to comedy, but besides that, I really like him now that he's become one of the heroes. He will truly, truly be missed.
Build and Cross-Z Magma transform, powered by the screams for justice still cheering them on, and suddenly... Evolt has trouble moving. It seems that Gentoku's death wasn't in vain, as the Evol Trigger has some lasting damage. The two Rider Kick the bottles out of him again, and this time, Cross-Z Magma runs at him with the white panel to fuse them together, causing the black panel to disappear.
With the white panel attached to the Pandora's Box they brought, a beam shoots out into the black hole... and out of it comes another Earth, one without a Skywall. Evolt is given some heroic monologuing to explain that their plan was to use his energy with this beam to fuse these two Earths, forming a world without the Skywall and without Evolt's presence. Shockingly, the Genius Fullbottle's power gets absorbed, leaving Build with one less power-up.
As Build prepares to send Evolt flying, Cross-Z Magma shoves him aside, causing his suit to dematerialize. He tells Sento that he's got Evolt's DNA in him, so obviously... he should be the one to finish the job. Cross-Z Magma propels himself into space, leaving Sento screaming his name!

Episode 49: "The Tomorrow Created by Build" (ビルドが創る明日)
While the Katsuragi in Sento's head seems content with letting Ryuga sacrifice himself, Sento won't have it - from the point on, there'll be no sacrifices. Using RabbitRabbit, Build leaps into the space where Evolt and Cross-Z Magma flew into, which takes him to a wasteland. Here, we finds what he thinks is Ryuga, but surprise, Evolt absorbed Ryuga and intends to finish off Sento so that he can become powerful again.
To Evolt’s dismay, though, Ryuga fights back inside his body, giving Sento the chance to regain his composure, and gives him the silver Dragon Fullbottle. He also tells Sento something very important: Since they met, Ryuga has now become the definition of Sento's heroism, a person who can't help but smile when he's managed to save someone. Ryuga, and all the others, have built up Sento into the hero he wants to be, so he can't let them down now.
Build charges into battle, back at it again with RabbitRabbit, then moving into TankTank, all while he and Evolt trade some powerful blows that cause them to get just a hint of death aura. As they keep fighting, Evolt loses some of his bulk, and Build switches to RabbitTank Sparkling. As Evolt loses even more of his power, Build is reduced to just RabbitTank, which Evolt takes amusement in... until Build turns the tides.
With this Hazard Level, Build's Rabbit Fullbottle turns gold, and he uses it with the silver Dragon Fullbottle to unleash a powerful finisher in the Fullbottle Buster. Finally, with Ryuga holding Evolt back, Build uses these gold and silver bottles to transform into a special Trial Form that the bent decides is a Best Match, because that’s what Sento and Ryuga are! With a Rider Kick that Evolt attempts to counter, Build sends him flying to the ground, causing him to explode.
And that's it. Vernage leaves Misora's body, now that she can confirm that the evil is defeated, then that gold bracelet finally falls off of Misora's hand. The two Earths begin to merge, with strings of math breaking down the Skywall... because I guess we needed to homage the opening?
And then... silence.
...
Sento wakes up in a grassy field with an odd product placement in the form of the Cross-Z RideWatch, then looks around and realizes that the Skywall is indeed... gone. As he walks into the city and sees Prime Minister Himuro on a large TV screen, he and Katsuragi reflect on the fact that they were successful, and that this was the world their father wanted: The last 10 years have been completely different for this new world, more peaceful. Of course, this means the people Sento remembers aren't gonna remember him.
We then get a wonderful montage of things. Gentoku is his father’s aide, Sawa is a political journalist that’s having a nice professional exchange with Gentoku, Utsumi is working for Namba which is now a workshop, Kazumi and his bros hang out at our favorite coffee shop to meet the cute barista Misora, and... damn is it nice to see them all happy.
But it’s also sad, because even though Sento practically created his world, it’s a world that doesn’t know who Sento Kiryu is. Katsuragi bids Sento farewell, letting him know that it's been fun tagging along and watching him do his hero thing. By this point, he seems to have come to terms with everything, so he will cease to be a voice in Sento’s head.
Sento then encounters Ryuga, who’s hanging out with his not-dead girlfriend, and confirms that not even Ryuga remembers him. He tries to play it off then goes to the coffee shop, where it seems like Misora recognizes him... but her dad points out that he’s Taro Sato, the rock star on the poster in their shop! As Sento drinks his coffee, he makes the shocking revelation that Misora's dad actually knows what coffee is after all, and can't help but finally crack a smile as the two act like goobers over his resemblance to this rock star.
Outside, Sento reflects once more on the world he's created, and finds it pretty ironic that the man who once had amnesia is now the one person no one remembers... except the guy who calls out his name~?!
Ryuga shows up, asking what the deal is with this world. He found out there was a version of him here who's dating his girlfriend, which Sento realizes is because... Our Ryuga wouldn’t technically exist in a world without Evolt since he has Evolt’s DNA, so the Ryuga here is one who grew up normally! And is maybe 8 months younger! The two decide to ride off together, with a wonderful callback to episode 1.
The show ends with Sento revealing to Ryuga that he's written a 49 episode script about his adventures, which is frankly NOT the weirdest comedic ending a Rider show has gotten. Neo Fangire.

So... that was Kamen Rider Build. It was-- actually, it's better if I let the review end here. This is long as is, so I'll be giving my overall thoughts of the show in a separate post. Mostly positive, some small nitpicks, and perhaps it’s worth talking more about the ending. Til then!
