Maxi was able to rest for a bit at her home before departing for her mission, and the Remdragon Knights have taken on looking after her while Riftan is away on his own campaign by order of the king

Maxi: you can't come with us!! I have to go alone to complete my mage training

The Remdragon Knights:

It's so wonderful. Maxi started out in life with no one - no one who cared about her, no one who loved her, no one who gave two shits about her hopes, her dreams, her safety, her health or wellbeing

And when given the chance to bloom and grow, when finally given safety and love, her kindness towards others is paid back to her tenfold. She finally has the freedom to extend her hand, over and over, in kindness and friendship, and each and every time she's so surprised that people would actually care about her and return her kindness and friendship

And for her to have become friends with the Remdragon Knights, who not only look out for her because she's Riftan's wife and a noble of Anatol, but also because they value her and view her as worth devotion is just 😭💕

Spoilers for book 2 part 1 (ch 1 to 40)

After book 1 being basically Riftan saying "let me smash" to Maxi (and smashing a lot), we now have book 2, where Maxi is the one saying "let me smash" to Riftan (who is ignoring her because he basically wants to smash too much?! Lol only those two jc)

So, this most recently published web novel is the START of season 2, and emotions have been high.

Maxi takes an agreement from a high mage at the Mage Tower, which will allow her to essentially graduate a year early. She has high prowess in Earth and Water elements and receives an Earth rune for her assistance on an expedition.

Nobody at the Mage Tower knew of her title as Lady Calypse, that was, until the group of travelers made a pit stop in Anatol. With them, were the Temple Knights, assigned by the church to protect the mages, as they are treated like a marginalized group, as their abilities are much needed in all the kingdoms.

With her return to Anatol (albeit a brief one), she learns that Riftan has been called to another battlefield and is not home. Discouraged, Maxi finds that Riftan was keeping her letters to him over the last three years (and some prior) safely locked in a chest by the bed. She finds comfort and hope in this discovery, despite their long separation caused by the feud with her father.

What we know of their relationship thus far, has been conflict after conflict with emotional vulnerability being their weakest point, mutually. Riftan wants to protect and serve her, with her never lifting a finger or being at risk. Maxi wants to find herself outside of the prison walls that were her fathers' castle, and discover what her place truly is in life.

By matter of, again conflict, Maxi was forced into joining the Mage Tower and studying there for three years (potentially four), in order to protect Riftan from his own self-destruction.

Back to book 7, our couple finally reunites because Riftan gets word of Maxi's brief return, and learns that she's part of an expedition traveling through monster-ridden paths. Their first encounter leaves Maxi feeling iced out by Riftan's cold stare. She pines for him and serves him meals but he spends weeks giving her short gruff responses and ushering her to safety away from him.

When the book is reaching it's conclusion, the couple has not reconciled yet.

Do not despair!

Listen, I know Maxi needs growth because she's spent her whole life being shrunken inside of herself afraid to even speak. However, while she spent three years doing everything she could in order to allow herself growth and to protect the man she loves, Riftan spent three years locking his heart in a chest (the letters) and building up Anatol to be a large city popular for merchants. Great progress but it's not emotional or spiritual growth.

Now, at the end of our story, Maxi has given up chasing after the bull-headed Riftan. Stubborn as he was, she felt he did not earn her efforts and that if he was truly disinterested in her, she would stop embarrassing herself in front of the other mages (some of whom are her friends).

Riftan starts to notice the changes within her and begins looking after her more closely. Appearing from behind without so much as a word, draping a fur coat on her shoulders. Giving her his attention in ways that are protective and endearing... But are they necessarily the actions of a lover?

Great conflict is needed for great change to occur and I believe book 8 will be a page-turning story of battles and emotional growth and reconciliation. Better yet, compromise, from our most stubborn knight!

I know I am eagerly waiting to see what Suji Kim has up her sleeve for the continuation of the second season!

Okokokokok! This is something I have to say. Spoiler(ish?) for the newest chapter of the webtoon (Sept 24th chapter) - under the read more ~~

The use of chains in the background of this chapter was actually really good. I will say when I read this part in the book - sure I kinda understood how she felt, but the chains drawn in this chapter really drive that home.

The chains are so good to describe her feelings without actually saying it. (I get that they do after that, but like I fully understood before that~~)

One of my fav things about the contrast between Riftan and Maxi as characters is their view of their roles. Maxi miscarries and is convinced she's a failure as a wife, meanwhile in the next room over Riftan is cursing his own dick for almost killing his wife.

I mean I just imagine him like "you want to try for a baby again??? No?... what? No, I dont not want an heir from you, I dont want you pregnant again cause you almost died. That shit was scary af and you want to do it again? Are you fucking crazy?"

UTOT RANT TIME: What the actual FUCK, Riftan?! She’s literally leaving for a temporary amount of time to better herself and live her dreams and he’s gonna be an asshole about it??? How many times has he done the exact same thing to her? I get it, she’s his support and he’s got trauma he needs to deal with, but what he’s doing isn’t love it’s trying to guilt her into staying because he’s selfish and obsessive. He needs to learn love is also being SUPPORTIVE of your partner’s dreams. If he fled into exile he would’ve ruined everyone’s lives in Anatol, and Maxi sees that, how can he not!? She’s literally putting her own feelings aside for the betterment of herself and everyone in Anatol, which is HIS land, and he’s just pathetically sitting in his office getting drunk and forcing her into an ultimatum. At least we get to see how much Maxi has matured to be able to make this decision without being negatively influenced by Riftan. God, this dude is in need of some major character development still. He even threatened to lock her up like her father did to her, AFTER HE BEAT UP HER FATHER FOR BEING A HORRIBLE PERSON. This poor man needs help and that is NOT Maxi’s responsibility. How many times has he seen that this controlling behavior gets him no where. You’d think he would’ve learned by now. Quit dragging our girl down! Get a therapist dude, I’m over your attitude. Maxi is allowed to have a life outside of you, and you need to at least accept it and be supportive even if it is painful for both of you. This reaction just proves y’all need space.
