Fall Fest Drabbles
Day 7: Reunion
Nie Huaisang latches the door to the aviary behind him, barely resisting the temptation to sink to the floor and stay there. Instead, he retrieves the box of seed from it’s niche in the wall and steps forward into the open space. All around him wings flutter as brightly coloured birds hop between branches and the tension between his shoulders finally begins to unwind at the sight of them. He smiles as one brave finch settles on his shoulder chirping inquisitively; he really has been away too long this time.
“Hello darlings,” he murmurs as more approach, “I’ve missed you.”
