✨Monument valley fanart✨
What can I say? I love this game with all my heart and soul, I’ve finished both monument valley 1 and 2.
I swear full on had a break down when the totem was crushed by that stupid trap, but I was so happy when we were able to put them back together in the ending of the forgotten shores. I also loved monument valley 2, the thought of what life was for the geometry worshippers was so beautiful and the ost track is so awesome, I also really liked the doortotem that was friends with ro (one of the main characters in monument valley 2)I’m honestly so sad this game didn’t have a strong fan base, but at the same time I’m glad because I have not seen one inappropriate fan-art of the characters. Anyways here’s some drawings of the gang, and I honestly wonder how ro and her daughter from monument valley 2 would feel about meeting ida, it would probably be a sort of sad moment knowing that their people were destroyed because of ida’s actions, but I think ro’s daughter would form a bond with ida. But ItS JuSt a ThEoRy-

ID: a picture of a tall rock with many rectangular edges and horizontal stripes of brown and grey. It has some greenery growing on top of it and it is in a body of grey water against a grey sky. It is positioned so that it might appear to be regarding the horizon. /end ID
This big rock looked very lonely so I said we could be friends

Monument Valley #2🐦(End) - Zara The Silent Gamer
I love this game, the weird perception changes, it's so good. I haven't played a game that I just sit there and complete in one sitting for a long time. Simple but beautiful.

we really should make a fancomic about the mobile game monument valley, we've had so many thoughts about it for like a decade... however.
the audience is so niche that it's basically Me and ustwo games, the devs, at this point.
#abyss talks#which could make it all the more intensely meaningful#or the story lead could be mad at wild reaching 13yo me story

From the studio that brought you Monument Valley comes a story about a globe-trotting antique restorer. As she arrives in the sun-soaked town of Bellariva, she has no idea just how broken it will turn out to be.

A Note On... Item Restorations
Assemble with Care is a narrative puzzle game by ustwo Games.
So I actually cried while playing this game. The themes hit hard and I'm an emotional human being. And to that point, the writing was great.
The sound design is immaculate. From voice work to music to sound effects. Absolute masterpiece.
My only gripe about my experience was that the game auto-continued while a voice line was running at the end of levels. I'd have to listen extra close through the music to make out what they were saying.
As short games go, Assemble with Care one gets a big thumbs up from me.
As always,
Enjoy Gaming!

Had a dream the other night that there was this new girl party member with big hair. Her main gimmick was that whenever she took damage, all enemies around her would take 1 damage.
There was also a new variation of the weight lifter enemy guy (forgot his name) that only did 1 damage for 2 action points, but had a diamond-shaped AoE.

Research
I had some research to catch up on as it is for pixel art. As I've already made my character, this research doesn't help with that part of my progress in making my game, but it will help for making my tile map. I had to research 4 people and their designs for pixel art, this is to understand different ideas portrayed in pixel art and what different styles are like. Also, to pick what stands out and how they use these unique things, and how I can use a similar ideas in my game.
The first site that I visited and looked into was Army of Trolls, which is the portfolio by Gary Lucken. Gary animates his pixel art and his work is heavily influenced by video games, pop culture and toys, as he has many Japanese toys and old 2D video games in his office. He has worked with many clients such as: BBC, Disney, Maker Studios, Mojang, UsTwo, Sony, Edge magazine, Wired, GQ, Dorling Kindersly, Kano and many more.
This is some of his work for a personal project of his, Magic Mallet, and its different to the style he uses majority of the time, as in this piece he uses black outlines for every part and for the characters he uses both black and white outlines. This is obvious for the characters to make them stand out from the background, while still following the black outline on every thing. As this is a personal project of his, I believe he wanted to use a different style that he's not really used to, so he could have a different experience making a game and have a different experience making it. I like the look of this piece, as it follows an exact rule all over the level. and its quite simple with some details, like in the characters.
This a piece of work he made for Pixelcount Studios, for their game Kynseed. This is a really detailed piece with lots of use of nature and uses animations to make it stand out and make the player really focus on what is going on around them. As this is for another studio, it wouldn't be his exact style of pixel art, but it's still a cool piece and I like the use of nature.
He also made promotional artwork for the London Games Fest, which was used in 2016 and 2017. This is a piece of work that I really like as it shows London being taken over by pixel art and characters, to show and promote what stuff will be presented by game developers.
He's also done many other pieces of pixel art work that is really cool, but these pieces are the ones that stand out the most to me, as they are all different and display different things.
The next site that I looked was Octavi Navarro Arts & Games, which is a small indie studio based in Barcelona. The person Octavi Navarro is a pixel artist and developer who has worked on games and has many pieces of his own work.
This is a great piece of his work and I really like the style used, which is a familiar style across all of his work. He called this piece 'The Fisherman's Daughter' and it shows small things, allowing us to understand what is happening why the title is called that. With this piece and all of his other work, for his character he uses black dots for eyes and in this one, he doesn't add any thing to show there is a nose. Most of his work have different themes, but have the same style and idea, with the contrast of the inside to the outside. In this piece of work, we can see a calm, relaxed atmosphere right outside the house, with a fisherman and someone who his most likely his daughter, but in the distance there is a tornado behind the mountains that could be heading in that direction. But inside the house it is more calm and quiet with not much going on compared to outside.
This is another piece of his work that's similar to the previous one, as there is a contrast between the outside and the inside. This piece is called 'Midnight Carnival' and it's a different theme, but follows the same idea and exposes the difference between two close areas. With this one it just shows it shows a pitch black midnight sky with nothing going on outside, but on the inside it shows a colourful and crazy circus with tons of different people and acts, even a giraffe. In this piece and some other pieces though, there are noses on the people, but his nose design is just another pixel added on to the face. Octavi Navarro only shows noses with a character side profile, that is the only time and will not add noses to a character with a front profile/view. But something different in this piece is that on the clown he added a red nose even though its not a side profile, this is an exception obviously as the red nose would be obvious from all angles. Navarro still used black dots for all the people's eyes, as he does in every piece of work.
This is one of the games that this studio has made, and this specific one is a game series that has 5 games of it. This game follows the protagonist, a girl names Claire Barnes, who discovers the horrors and secrets of a deserted road in the dark. She discovers these horrors as she tries to resume her journey after an unexpected obstacles appeared in front of her car. This is a story driven, short adventure game that only uses black and white pixel art, which I think adds a more creepy atmosphere to it. With the only black and white colour palette, it reminds me of Limbo, especially as it's a side scroller that is about a character exploring and finding horrors. Something I like about Octavi Navarro is that all of his style is consistent, and even in his games he uses two black dots for the character's eyes, and only one pixel for a nose. The studio have made a few other games as well which follow the same style, all of them being horror. I think that is to do with the contrast of the outside and inside world, and how Navarro presents it in his normal work; It creates an eerie atmosphere that is used well for a horror game, but cannot really be used for a pixel art photo. So when this studio makes a game, they can use the same idea, but add a better horror atmosphere with things like a soundtrack for it to be more creepy.
The next site that I visited was Derek Yu pixel art gallery. Derek Yu is an American video game designer and artist who has worked on popular projects like Spelunky. Yu started playing games on an Atari 2600 and he and his friend started mapping out simple games on paper, just when they were in the second grade. Yu has designed and co-designed several award winning games, most notable being Spelunky, Aquaria and Eternal Daughter. This site that I got a link to is actually a site that isn't Derek Yu's work, but pixel art from retro games that he likes. So I'll cover this site partly, but will mostly show his actual work.
Spelunky is a game that was released in 2008 and is a 2D Platformer. This is a game that is really helpful to take inspiration from, and has many features that I personally want to use in my game. It has enemies of varying sizes which are animals or monsters you might typically find in a cave, but to combat these enemies there are useful weapons, like bombs, guns, climbing gear and archeological artifacts. These enemies could kill the character quickly and were difficult to challenge, and Yu knew this, so he made it that way on purpose, as the player would behave and play in unique ways and think more about their actions when playing.
Eternal Daughter is another game by Yu, it is another platformer and was released in 2002. It took Yu around two years to make this game and was a homage to some of his favourite games from his younger years, like Super Metroid and Castlevania: SOTN. Yu said himself that the gameplay is similar, but the characters, the world and the story are all their own.
-Batman (Famicom/NES). Sunsoft, 1990
-Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes (Arcade). Capcom, 1998
In the site that I was given, Derek Yu has put pixel art from retro games that he likes, and a thing I noticed is how much majority of the pieces varies. It goes from simple pixel art with not too much detail, to heavily detailed pieces.
The next person that I researched was Johan Vinet who is another pixel artist who learned how to make it on an Atari 1040STF with 16 colours. Vinet is Canadian and owns Canari Games, which is an independent video game studio created in Montreal 2018. Vinet has worked on many indie games such as Flinthook, Mercenary Kings Reloaded, Shovel Knight Showdown, Rivals Of Aether. But Canari Games released it's first game, Lunark, in March 2023. On this page that I've been given, its pretty much all about his game Castaway, but I will also research more games of his to put in.
Castaway is a pixel art minigame that uses the measurements 16x16 for each tile. This game is cool in my opinion as its really simple and has a range of different parts about it, like with the style and terrain. It has a short family friendly story about a character whos ship has crashed on an island and his dog was taken by hostile creatures.
This the studios first game and it follows a character
