What can I say? I love this game with all my heart and soul, I’ve finished both monument valley 1 and 2.

I swear full on had a break down when the totem was crushed by that stupid trap, but I was so happy when we were able to put them back together in the ending of the forgotten shores. I also loved monument valley 2, the thought of what life was for the geometry worshippers was so beautiful and the ost track is so awesome, I also really liked the doortotem that was friends with ro (one of the main characters in monument valley 2)I’m honestly so sad this game didn’t have a strong fan base, but at the same time I’m glad because I have not seen one inappropriate fan-art of the characters. Anyways here’s some drawings of the gang, and I honestly wonder how ro and her daughter from monument valley 2 would feel about meeting ida, it would probably be a sort of sad moment knowing that their people were destroyed because of ida’s actions, but I think ro’s daughter would form a bond with ida. I love this game, the weird perception changes, it's so good. I haven't played a game that I just sit there and complete in one sitting for a long time. Simple but beautiful.

Ida

Monument Valley is a puzzle game made and published by Ustwo Games.

It was first released on IOS on April 3rd, 2014, before being released on Android on May 14th, 2014.

IVE BEEN SO CURIOUS ABOUT THE MONUMENT VALLEY CIVILIZATION LORE SINCE I WAS LIKE FUCKING 11 YEARS OLD AND I THOUGHT THE CRUMBS WE GOT FROM 1 AND 2 WOULD BE ALL. IM SO FUCKING HYPED FOR THIS WTF (but i'm not getting it on netflix lmao, i encourage anyone else who's interested to wait for them to release a version that you can actually own like the other 2 games. i don't want it to get locked behind a netflix subscription and i want to actually support ustwo games.)

As we head into winter and face the terrors of being alive for these Interesting Times, I thought I'd bring up a couple of things that I have brought up in the past that help me through the real bad days. So, here's a couple of --

EXTREMELY FRIENDLY VIDEO GAMES

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure

This game came out basically right when my partner and I hit a severe depressive episode in the worst part of the pandemic and in the dead of winter. One of those things that I couldn't play without smiling the entire time. It's very bright and colorful. The character you play will just decide that she wants to skip instead of run for a moment. Almost everything in the game you're doing involves photographing birds! You're on a beautiful island!! You're opposing a capitalist with the power of nature advocacy!!! YOU HAVE A BOOK THAT PLAYS BIRD CALLS AT YOU!! It's cheap and part of its profits go to charity!!!!! The only things that I would mark against it are: the text messages that come up are way too tiny, and the pigeon's sound effect is way too loud.

Dropsy: A Point-and-Click Hugventure

Dropsy is a very peculiar game. You play a strange clown who is blamed for a fatal accidental fire at a carnival, and you go around the game world basically just... making people's lives better, often in very small ways, and building trust back with the community. As with any point-and-click adventure, there are a couple moments where you might want to go to a hint manual cuz the quest isn't conveyed very well, but I thought the vast bulk of the game avoided that kind of thing, and very little "moon logic" either. There's a couple scary dream sequences, but overall the game is very positive and extremely charming.

Eastshade

A very pleasant and pretty game where you go around a community of anthropomorphic animals, making friends, mending relationships, and earning your keep by making paintings of the scenery. It's got a couple of bugs, but it's a very small indie dev team.

The Frog Detective series

A series of three very short detective stories full of good humor and interesting characters!

An open world exploration game where you run around a community trying to get your older sister to play a game you two used to play together. You meet a whole bunch of other animal friends along the way, and they all come together to try to create the fantasy world you're envisioning. It's very charming, and it's particularly good if you like games that have you doing a lot of collecting and exploring.

The Longing

Hey so not to get heavy on you or anything but just for a moment: this game holds a really special place in my heart. Ironically, given its setting, this game gave me the will to get through one of the darkest headspaces I've ever found myself in. While it was released the same year as Alba, I didn't play it until two years later, in the dead of winter, just as with Alba.

It's a mostly-idle game, where you set your little shade character on a task, he slowly walks to it, and then he slowly does it. The game claims it takes 400 real-time days, which it can, but you'll generally take about a third of that (still over a hundred days!) to finish it as there are ways to speed up the way the game tracks time. Time passes even when the game is off.

But lemme tell ya. If you have ADHD, like I do, this game is like... a hack to get past your distractability and still get things done in your life. Important things, simple things. Things like the dishes, or the laundry, or cooking food. Because, you see... You set your guy to do a task, and then once you're satisfied that he's gonna actually get to the task and do it, you find reason to get up and do something yourself. Cuz now, see, haha, you're multitasking!

I own both of the plush Shade dolls that have come out. They mean a lot to me.

A Short Hike

I think most people know about this game, actually, but it's still a charming and fun romp up a mountain to make an important phone call, meeting interesting folks along the way and playing little minigames!

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley

Likewise I think most people are aware of this game! I haven't gotten very far into it myself, but I would like to say there's one thing I don't like about the game thus far, and it has to do with the primary mechanic. You play your harmonica.... and it sounds SO BAD!! It just abruptly and jarringly doots and squeaks its way over the soundtrack, which is by Sigur Ros, one of my all-time favorite bands! OTHERWISE very cute and charming! Based on the popular animated series!!

Super Lesbian Animal RPG

I probably never would have heard about this game if someone I follow hadn't started obsessively posting about it while they were playing it. It's really good! It's really queer! It's really pleasant and affirming! The character designs are great! It's a FF/Dragon's Quest style turn-based RPG made in RPG Maker and it doesn't even require any grinding exclamation point! (Or at least I didn't do any grinding when I played, and I didn't have any problems getting through it)

Had a dream the other night that there was this new girl party member with big hair. Her main gimmick was that whenever she took damage, all enemies around her would take 1 damage.

There was also a new variation of the weight lifter enemy guy (forgot his name) that only did 1 damage for 2 action points, but had a diamond-shaped AoE.

A Note On... Item Restorations

Assemble with Care is a narrative puzzle game by ustwo Games.

So I actually cried while playing this game. The themes hit hard and I'm an emotional human being. And to that point, the writing was great.

The sound design is immaculate. From voice work to music to sound effects. Absolute masterpiece.

My only gripe about my experience was that the game auto-continued while a voice line was running at the end of levels. I'd have to listen extra close through the music to make out what they were saying.

As short games go, Assemble with Care one gets a big thumbs up from me.
