Everyone knows Barry for creating both @dueckdefense and the Surefire Suppressors division. In June 2002, I knew and recognized him as "that cool guy in the next hut that was a contributing writer for SWAT magazine" who just so happened was fellow graduating candidate of the US Army Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course. That's right folks, he graduated SFAS, but was so passion-driven to bring premier weapon suppressors to market that he passed on the Army's invitation to attend the Special Force Qualification Course in Hope's of earning a Green Beret. I remember leaning up against rucksacks under the pine trees on Camp MacKall to talk guns with him between scuff-sessions and Star events and thinking, "that dude is gonna be a great 18B, one day!" His is an amazing story, especially considering a decade or so later 18B's across the Special Forces Regiment (and all of USSOCOM, for that matter) were removing SOPMOD4 suppressor birdcages in favor of the new Surefire Flash Hider / Suppressor Adapter. and this right here is why I USSOF is full of shit. They threatened and condemned Pinoe for daring to exercise her right to protest against police brutality because it's "unpatriotic" apparently to care about the safety of black and brown people YET continuously profit financially off of the fight for equality in the LGBTQIA spectrum as a way to seem inclusive to the people who support the sport. This lets me know, that as a gay Afro-Latinx...this federation doesn't believe in my existence or my identity because that conversation is just "too separatist" to talk about and makes too many people who aren't affected by it, uncomfortable.

Los Angeles, 2005 “Okay, what happened out there?” Phoenix asks intently and Hangman shakes his head, throwing his head back, thumbs coming to try and press against the sides of his nose, pushing in and making a sickly cracking noise that has Bob grimacing. Apparently being a hero wasn’t so cool. “Stupid ass giant robot is kickin’ e’ryone’s ass.” Hangman slurs.

 Huh. That’s kind of a very silly thing to be fighting and yet, it sounded dreadful and dangerous and terrifying. What a funny and perilous world they lived in. Bob watches the two heroes up close, an infinity of thoughts warring around his mind. The two looked awfully young, he was sure they couldn’t be much older than him and yet, there they were. Clad in military uniform, sporting the USSOF patches, callsign in toll and bearing so much responsibility over other people’s lives.

All Bob had been worried about was whether he’d actually start college this fall or give it a year. He couldn’t tell why, but it felt terribly unfair now.

The final leg of a walking patrol through the bazaar.⁣ ⁣ As training progressed with the local partner force, the more comfortable they became with their SF partners. This was on the tail end of the deployment for the ODA. Soon, another team from a different Group would rotate with them.⁣ ⁣ Mounted patrols & missions utilizing vehicles & GMVs diminished while walking patrols increased. Approximately four members of the ODA would accompany a platoon of the local army on these day long patrols.⁣ ⁣ Pictured is a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, 18B, carrying an RPG-7, borrowed from the partner unit. 18B's are experts not only with American weapon systems of all sizes, but many foreign weapons as well.⁣ ⁣ Usually, each squad from the platoon had a grenadier who carried an RPG system. And there were three squads to the platoon with a command element. Ah immediately coming for my wig by exposing my references... sadgfasdgfajsaghsd yeah kind of! I actually have heaps of lore for it and I TRY not to infodump it on the fic so it won't get convoluted but it's like... the upgrade from Sky High, the USSOF Academy in Anapollis is def Sky High and then Top Gun is the specialty school to train ppl who are already working as heroes!

The Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV).⁣ ⁣ Before the Army began it's GMV program in 2015, the GMV was a modified High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle [(HMMWV) or Hummer for you non-military types] used exclusively by Special Operations Forces (SOF).⁣ ⁣ This included a heavier suspension, more powerful engine, winch, lighter armor, more weapons, & an open bed for a tail gunner. The enemy called them "tanks" & they referred to the Special Forces (SF) guys as "the bearded ones."⁣ ⁣ Because SF looked different than regular military units, they were attacked less. The enemy learned through trial & error that these guys would be highly willing to fight back, they were incredibly aggressive & violent, using all their available weapons including close air support (CAS).⁣ ⁣ In many austere locations, the GMV was necessary for the long distances of most missions and for the off-road and small, unimproved road driving.
