Joy Harjo was recently named US Poet Laureate. She is the first Native American person to hold this honor. On this “Independence Day”, we share her poem An American Sunrise. For many in America, the Declaration of Independence merely represents subjugation and the systemic racism that continues to stymie their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Did you know that Native Americans are referred to as “merciless Indian savages” IN THE DECLARATION ITSELF? A few lines below that whole ‘all men are created equal’ business… Many Americans are not as free as the Declaration of Independence states. So while we celebrate the colonies’ hard-fought win over the British, and our founding as a nation, remember the true cost of that birth has never been figured. The U.S. must face the dehumanizing nature of it’s history: this country was built on stolen land, with unpaid forced labor. The photo is from @matikawilbur’s @project562, a national photography project dedicated to photographing over 562 federally recognized tribes in The United States. It demonstrates the diversity, vibrancy, and realness of Indian Country. She aims to challenge and surpass stereotypical representations and refresh the national conversation about contemporary Native America. We highly recommend checking it out! Remember Joy Harjo - 1951- Remember the sky that you were born under, know each of the star's stories. Remember the moon, know who she is. Remember the sun's birth at dawn, that is the strongest point of time. Remember sundown and the giving away to night. Remember your birth, how your mother struggled to give you form and breath. You are evidence of her life, and her mother's, and hers. Remember your father. He is your life, also. Remember the earth whose skin you are: red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth brown earth, we are earth. Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them, listen to them. They are alive poems. Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the origin of this universe. Remember you are all people and all people are you. Remember you are this universe and this universe is you. Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.
