How do you make and save money?
It’s mostly about increasing your income, and then reducing how much of that income you actually need to spend. This is what I do. Not all of it is technically allowed because of my university’s employment rules, but I haven’t run into trouble yet. It’s not always fun to live frugally, but it allows me to indulge in the things that matter to me.
Increasing income:
I receive a termly stipend as part of my scholarships, covering my rent and utilities and leaving me with a little money left over.
I work at least one shift at the student bar per week, and usually receive tips.
I do part-time paid internships during term-time, and full-time paid internships in most holidays.
I work for my university by taking shifts in the libraries, and working with admissions and outreach.
I offer myself for some compensated research trials and surveys at my uni.
I do online tutoring, mostly to foreign highschoolers whose parents are willing to pay a fortune for my university’s name.
I work freelance in translation services and proofreading in my native languages. This pays by the word.
I offer basic beauty services (waxing, eyebrows, etc.), styling and tailoring/mending services to students at a reduced rate compared to local salons and tailors.
I sell PDF copies of my notes and lecture transcripts to students on my course, and very occasionally write essays for a higher fee.
I babysit/pet-sit/house-sit for my professors, neighbours, and other local families I know.
I receive occasional cash prizes for competitions.
I have some music and poetry published, and receive a little bit of money regularly as royalties.
I sell clothes etc. on behalf of people who are too old or lazy to use online secondhand sites, and take a portion of the cost.
I sell a few printables and some of my embroidery and other handicrafts on Etsy.
I take on any little ‘odd job’ offered to me. Last week I was paid £25 as an extra in a student film production.
I have a few investments, and I withdraw portions of the interest already generated if I feel I need to.
My parents send me a small amount of money every month (something like £75) specifically for groceries.
Reducing outgoings:
All of my tuition is covered by my scholarships, plus a single airfare to and from home per year.
I get all my fish free from my neighbour, and I eat a lot of it.
I get all my milk free, in exchange for doing the eyebrows of the girl who runs the dairy near me.
I buy the rejected fruit and vegetables from the greengrocer’s at the end of the day for a discount.
I buy rice and beans in bulk from the international market a few miles from my house.
I cook everything from scratch at home. Most meals I make come out at less than a £1 spend per portion, because I buy in bulk.
I walk everywhere, and I have a Railcard for when I need to use the train.
I pirate books and movies, or use my university’s libraries. I never, ever pay for books.
I always shop in sales or usually secondhand, and I’m really good at using discount codes.
I don’t bother with fancy salons. I do most of my cosmetic work myself, or I go to independent aestheticians who work from their houses.
I get a friends’ discount with the dry cleaning shop I use, because it’s run by the local monastery and I know most of the monks there.
I don’t have any subscriptions or monthly payments to anything except magazines. My phone and laptop were bought outright for me as a part of my scholarship agreement, and I don’t have a car or any streaming services.
I have a black and white television (the licensing charge for B&W in the UK is significantly lower than colour).
I use a cashback app whenever I buy anything online. It’s only a small percentage, but it adds up over time.
I never buy alcohol. There are more than enough events with free drinks in a student city.
Saturday brunch was recently swapped to a homemade brunch, so now I no longer pay for any meals out at all.
Most of my cleaning products are homemade in the way my grandmother taught me. All you really need is bar soap, white vinegar, lemon juice and a cheap bottle of bleach in your cleaning kit.
I never, ever forget to use my student discount.

DATING EXO HEADCANON A⇴Z ⇴ Kim Jongin
A ⇴ AFFECTION
Jongin was a huge fan of affection, he would love to cling to you and have a hold on you as often as possible. His nickname of bear was definitely reflected in his affection, he’d love to bear hug you and wrap you up tightly.
B ⇴ BEFORE DATING
He didn’t quite know how to react when he first met you, he knew he liked you, but he wasn’t really sure what to do. He’d turn to a few of his elder members for support in what to do to try and impress you. Whenever he spoke to you, he always got incredibly nervous, and he knew there was only one explanation to his feelings.
C ⇴ CONFESSION
Jongin confessed to you one night after inviting you to dinner. He was incredibly shy, with an innocent smile on his face all night long, building up the courage to tell you how he felt. Once he did, he couldn’t help but let go of a sigh of relief and take a huge sip from his drink. A part of him wanted to run away, but when you decided to tell him how you felt too, he was pretty relieved that he made the decision to stay and listen to every word you said.
D ⇴ DATES
Dates were a big deal to Jongin, he felt that actions spoke louder than words, so he’d go all out to impress you. He was a proper gentleman, he’d always show up at your door with flowers or a gift, and always offer you his hand. Whilst he loved to take you out to play crazy golf or something silly, he also wasn’t afraid to dress up nicely and spoil you at a nice restaurant. No matter what the plan was though, Jongin always made sure that your dates were something you’d treasure, each one had to be special as that was his favourite way of letting you know how he felt about you.
E ⇴ EXPERIENCE
It’s well known Jongin has had a couple of public relationships in the past, so he will definitely be a bit apprehensive about dating again. When he first mentions it to you, you promise to work at a pace that is comfortable for him rather than pushing him. You trust that he knows what he’s doing when it comes to keeping your relationship safe. He definitely uses what he’s learnt from past experiences to try and make your relationship work, he’s not oblivious to how cutthroat the media can be, but he doesn’t want you caught up in the crossfire.
F ⇴ FIGHTING
Compared to the rest of his members, Jongin has a bit more of a temper on him than the others. Whilst he hates shouting or arguing with you, there are certainly a few occasions where he just can’t help himself. If the two of you argue, he’ll take some time away to relax and calm down, once he’s cool and ready to talk, he’ll reappear. He won’t let an argument drag out for too long, once his temper has cooled, he’ll realise what mistakes have been made and will be determined to figure things out. He’s stubborn, but when it comes to the point of beginning to hurt you, he knows exactly when to draw the line.
G ⇴ GETTING TO KNOW HIS FAMILY
You met his niece and nephew first when helping him babysit one evening, and luckily for you, they hyped you up to the rest of his family. Seeing how much the two kids loved you, his family knew that they’d love you too. And when they met you, they weren’t let down, and seeing how happy the kids were to see you again settled everything too.
H ⇴ HOME
Jongin didn’t want to rush anything with your relationship, it was something he’d done before and regretted. It would take a few months at least before Jongin considered inviting you to move into his place, but eventually, he’d know when he was ready, and as soon as he was, he’d ask you the question straight away.
I ⇴ “I LOVE YOU”
He was the first to say, ‘I love you,’ one night one a date. As the two of you walked along the river hand in hand, his eyes glanced across at you. You were lost in looking down the river, but as he studied you closely, it became very apparent to Jongin how he felt about you, calling out your name to capture your attention before telling you how he felt.
J ⇴ JEALOUSY
Jongin tried hard not to get jealous, he often gave off the impression he was tough and confident, and he wanted it to stay that way. But on the inside, he hated seeing you around other people, and you knew him well enough to know when he was feeling that way too. He’d try and smile in your direction when you caught him and reassure you, but you knew him much better than that, pulling him to one side so that you could ease his worries without anyone else hearing around you both and teasing him about it.
K ⇴ KIDS
Having his niece and nephew gave him plenty of practice for the future. Seeing Jongin around them both certainly gave you an insight into your future, as it did for him when he watched you with the two of them. Together you knew that one day you wanted to start a family together, but you weren’t in any rush, you both had other dreams you wanted to accomplish before you thought about children just yet.
L ⇴ LAUGHTER
He loved to play jokes on you and wind you up, he was one of the biggest jokesters in the group and that reflected in your relationship too. He’ll always play innocent when he tries to make you laugh, pleading that he never intended to give you a stitch from laughing too hard, but you know he knows exactly what he’s doing. Nothing boosts his ego more than knowing that he’s the one responsible for your laughter and the reason that you proudly wear such a wide smile on your face whenever he’s around.
M ⇴ MISSING
Jongin struggles a lot when he’s away from you, around the group he’ll become very quiet and introverted whilst trying to push his feelings to one side. For a few days, he’ll appear fine whenever the two of you call, but after a week or two when the distance begins to burden you both, his true feelings will become clear. Over time, he’ll open up to you about his struggles and let you see how emotional he’s getting. He counts down the days each time he goes away on tour until he can reunite with you, that’s his best way of coping, knowing that each day when he wakes up, he’s a day closer to being able to go home and reunite with you. It’s hard on you both but coming back together is always the highlight of it all.
N ⇴ NICKNAMES
He loves for you to call him ‘bear’ and in response he’ll always give you the biggest bear hug. For you, he’s traditional ‘love’ is his favourite term of endearment to use, but it usually depends on how he’s feeling.
O ⇴ OBSESSION
Jongin is obsessed with your waist, he loves to wrap his arms around your waist when he’s hugging you, or have an arm wrapped around it whenever the two of you are walking side by side.
P ⇴ PDA
He’s not afraid to be affectionate with you in public, he’s not shy in making his relationship known to people and will happily make an obvious point to anyone who stares in your direction that you’re taken. He’s in tune with you and knows exactly what you’re comfortable with, he won’t ever push the boundaries past that.
Q ⇴ QUESTIONS
Jongin’s questions usually are the triggers for some sort of debate. He loves getting to know you, even after years together there will always an element of intrigue in him that will knows there’s more to find out about you.
R ⇴ RANDOM FACTS
Whenever he goes shopping for hoodies, he buys duplicates. These days, you have a whole section of your wardrobe dedicated to the hoodies that Jongin has bought you so that the two of you can match. When he goes on tour, he swaps the hoodies so he has yours and you have his, that way you have each other’s scents around you, but you can still be comfortable in clothes that you’d both wear in your day to day lives.
S ⇴ SEX
Incredibly passionate, this is the time when Jongin will be most affectionate with you. He’ll cling to you and keep you as close as possibly as he can. He lets his lips and hands do most of the talking, he loves to feel your body and feel the control that he has over you. His lips will be attached to any part of your skin that he can reach. Jongin is also the best at aftercare, he always knows exactly what to do to look after you.
T ⇴ TEXTS
He often sends you photos throughout the day when he’s somewhere he knows you love. It will usually end up being a coffee shop, but he loves to tease you that he’s there whilst you’re usually busy at work instead.
U ⇴ UNIVERSE
There aren’t many people who know the real Jongin, but you are definitely one of them. It’s strange for him, somehow it always feels as if you’ve been a part of his life, he struggles to remember what life was like without you most of the time.
V ⇴ VACATION
He never used to be fussed about having a vacation until he met you. He wanted to give you holidays and treats that you deserved, usually at the end of a comeback or a tour he’d give himself a week to just be able to spend time with you and thank you for being so supportive of him whilst he was so busy with work.
W ⇴ WHINING
If he’s in a clingy mood, Jongin will definitely whine until he has your attention. He’ll sit and wait somewhat patiently until you have your eyes firmly on him.
X ⇴ XXXXX
He knows that you’re a big fan of his lips, and he’ll definitely use that to his advantage. He’ll often appear beside you with his lips puckered, making it very clear what he wants from you. He loves to use his height to crane down and press a kiss against your cheek, or if he can reach, your lips. Whenever he kisses you by surprises, he knows it will flush your cheeks red, which is always the sign he takes to carry on.
Y ⇴ YOU
You were Jongin’s best friend, he loved having you in his life.
Z ⇴ ZZZ
He’d always keep you close whenever you slept, even if you were a bit of a wriggler, somehow, he’d find a way to keep you in his strong hold, and kiss gently against your neck and shoulders until you slipped off to sleep.

Prompt/Trope Mix n Match 2
this was probs my favorite one and ive been working on it on and off for a while bcs i wanted to do new tropes which was hard so some might be similar to the first one idk. lets do this tho! (send a number + letter)
“You couldn’t pay me enough to do that.”
“Do you kiss all your friends like that?”
“I don’t even know you anymore.”
“You’re too good for me.”
“I wish I’d never laid eyes on you.”
“Loving you is dangerous.”
“I can’t keep fighting how I feel.”
“You can take your blindfold off.”
“I made them a spotify playlist full of love songs. Is that obvious enough?”
“We’re not a couple.”
“I guess you don’t know me as well as you thought you did.”
“The way you look at them gives it away.”
“You followed me all the way here?”
“Be quiet, there are children here.”
“Don’t cry, your makeup looks way too good.”
“I’ll see you on the other side.”
“Did I die in my sleep and wake up in hell?”
“Love really hurts without you.”
“You’ve never looked at me that way before.”
“This feels like a trick question.”
“I don’t know how or why I put up with you.”
“You used to love me.”
“I’ve decided to make this everyone else’s problem.”
“Well, I appreciate the effort.”
“Why couldn’t you have just joined a cult like a normal person?”
“I’m not drunk, I just haven’t slept in two days.”
“You got home awfully late last night.”
“I hope I haven’t scared you off.”
“I thought that crush was over with.”
“Is that what they told you?”
“I’m out of goodbyes.”
“But do they fuck you like I did?”
“Everything is over.”
“Pull it together, bitch.”
“I’m not being nice because I want to sleep with you, but I definitely do want to sleep with you.”
“Everyone I’ve ever cared about has lied to me and let me down.”
“So…this is happening?”
“Fine, but I’m gonna complain the whole time.”
“Do you think you’d remarry if I die first?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, I don’t have a crush. I don’t even like them.”
“You could’ve gotten killed!”
“If anything happened to any of them, I’d kill everyone in this room and then myself.”
“You owe me big time for this.”
“Blackmail? Are you seriously doing this to me?”
“Explain it to me like I’m five years old.”
“Don’t leave me like this.”
“Oh god, I’m starting to talk like you too.”
“I’m not mad, I’m disappointed. And yes, I know that’s worse, that’s the point.”
“Why are the cute ones always the dumbest?”
“Fuck, you scared the shit out of me.”
“You can’t make me.”
“I lied, I do need you.”
“Just hold my hand, we got this.”
“That’s what she said.”
“What if I never see you again?”
“Don’t make me get up.”
“You’re cute when you’re jealous.”
“I couldn’t leave you if I tried. And I’ve tried.”
“We could be happy together.”
“I don’t know what I expected, but it definitely wasn’t that.”
“God, I feel like I’m babysitting you.”
“Believe me, getting a crush on you wasn’t in my plans.”
“I chose you, not anyone else.”
“Whenever you're here, you know it feels right.”
“Do you love me? Then act like it.”

call me al
there was a tumblr post that said:
"no offense but two characters running from the authorities and then on of them pull the other in dark, small alley to shake them off and they're both breathing hard and there's not mush space there and they're looking at each other while trying to hold back chuckles and one of them brings their finger to their lips playfully in a 'shhh' motion while smirking and oh no now they're looking at one another's lips and one of them whispers 'i think the coast is clear now. we could leave.' and the other says 'yeah. we could' but they're still looking at the other person's lips and neither make a move to of and they can feel each other's breath against their skin"
masterlist
arthur morgan x alayna [ofc] 1.8k
It’s after noon when Alayna comes riding her into camp on her all black thoroughbred, with a deer on the back ready for Pearson’s stew that night. Lifting the heavy carcass onto her shoulder she carries it over to the cooks wagon.
“Thank you Al, it’s about time someone contributed today.” Pearson’s scratchy voice can be heard behind her. As he walks up, he takes the dead animal from her and hangs it up to be skinned.
“What do you mean? Hasn’t Arthur brought you anything yet?” Walking around the man, she goes to the water basin, scoops some out and rinses off her hands, “He’s usually the first person to bring you game.”
Pearson takes out his knife and begins to skin the deer, “He’s off drinking it up in town,” He stabs a little rougher at that, “Dutch's' orders.”
Alayna hums in acknowledgement, swipes an apple. Taking a bit she makes and her way to the man himself. Dutch is sitting outside his tent reading his beloved book by Evelyn Miller.
“Whats this about Arthur drinking in town?”
“Ah! My dear Al,” Dutch looks up from his reading and a smile blooms on his face. After all these years she was still a sucker for his smile.
She remembers when Hosea and him picked her up. She was about 15 and living on the streets. She ended up pickpocketing the man they were trying to con. Dutch charmed the man, sent him on his way, and then turned and charmed her as well. And here they were, 14 years later and she was still falling for his craft. That man had a way with words that she could never resist.
“Yes, poor Lenny came riding in here this morning saying something about Micha getting locked up in Strawberry and is to be hung—”
“Let’s hope so.” She mumbles taking another bite of her apple. The pointed look Dutch gives her lets her know she was heard but he keeps talking anyway, getting up and leading her towards the horses.
“Yes, well Arthur took him into Valentine to go drink and calm him down. Why don’t you go check on them? We don’t want to cause any more trouble than we already have.” They stop at her horse and Dutch gives her shoulder a pat dismissing her.
“Well Beef it looks like we have to go babysit some boys.” Alayna feeds him the rest of her apple and gives him a couple of pats and makes her way into town.
The various sounds of the saloon can be heard as Alayna rounds the street corner of Valentine. She takes moment looking around trying to spot Arthur and Lenny’s horses, once she does she hitches Beef up beside them and makes her way into the saloon.
Music and laughter fill her ears and very particular laugh makes her smile softly. Arthurs laugh has always brought a smile to her face and had done so often before the Blackwater mess.
Growing up with John and Arthur was defiantly a challenge, John was practically a brother, and the two of them teased each other as such. But Arthur, Arthur always had the potential to be something else entirely. Yet the two could never find themselves quite on the same page, Alayna had had dalliances before and of course Arthur had Eliza and Issac at one time, and then Mary. But there were still stolen glances, lingering touches the went just past a normal amount of time, flirting teases here and there that always built up a tension between them. It never helped that even the gang members could see that there was something between them, even if they didn’t acknowledge it themselves; Hosea had a couple of times sent Alayna down to the river to look for Arthur, on the pretense that he was fishing, just to find him bathing instead. They had both come back beat red from the river and avoided eye contact for the next couple of days every time they fell for it. Hosea would always find it amusing though.
Alayna spots Arthur and Lenny at the far end of the bar and heads over to them, the two men are laughing and taking shots of whiskey, as the younger one takes the shot he throws his entire body back, in turn bumping into a drunk behind him, he turns irate and begins throwing slurs at Lenny.
“Lenny!” Alayna reaches them patting Lenny’s shoulder and putting herself between the two men, who on closer inspection she realizes is one of the men for the bar fight earlier in the week.
“Sorry sir! Here have a drink on me!” Turning to charm the drunk and defuse the situation, Alayna plasters on a giant smile, “Get my friend here a drink!” She motions to the bartender and tosses him some coins hoping that would be enough to earn the mans silence. Its works and the man takes his drink and moves to a table away from them mumbling something about women. Alayna rolls her eyes and turns her attention back to the two clearly drunk cowboys she calls family.
“Al! W-w-what are you doin’ here?” Lenny slurs a little, his head cocked to the side in confusion, “But thannnk god you were. I did not wanna fight him.”
Alayna motions to the bartender again and orders herself a beer and takes up the spot next to Lenny, “Well someone has to take care of you boys—” She can see that Arthur is watching her, not paying attention to what she's saying. But instead he's captivated by her lips. She takes a swig of her beer and a little bit slips out past her lips and flows down her neck, he watches it, finding himself wondering what is would be like to trace the path with his tongue.
“Besides Arthur isn’t the only here who knows how to have a good time.” At his name he’s jolted out of his thoughts and makes eye contact with Alayna, realizing he's been caught, a blush forms across his face and going down his neck.
“What?” Finally catching Alayna’s teasing,”Oh you mean like that one time you got drunnnk and convinced yourself you could ride a pig?” He tries to hide his smirk but it gets the best of him and grows into a wide smile.
“As I remember it, we got drunk and you tried as well!” Lenny lets out a hearty laugh “You did what!” and all three of them start laughing harder as Arthur tries to defend himself and Alayna retells the story.
L E N N Y ! Y N N E L !
The rest of their time carries on like that, swapping stories, drinking, and causing mischief. As night rolls around Alayna and Arthur lose Lenny a couple of times.
The first time the lose him they find him on the upper level of the saloon trying to balance a tumbler on his forehead. They go to join him leaning against the railing drinks in hand.
“Say Arthur, why you haven't been married yet?” Lenny asks, completely oblivious to Arthur going ridged at his question.
“Oh, no one will have me.”
“Tha’ss not true” Alayna slurs, turning to Arthur she grabs on to his bicep, “Any women, hell some men, would be happy, veeery happy, to have a big, strong, c-caring…man,” She loses her voice not wanting to say more under Arthurs heated gaze. She can feel her face heat up, she's unsure if its embarrassment or the alcohol doing it. Probably both.
Or maybe.
Something else.
E L N Y N ?
They some how lose Lenny again, Alayna fears it’s going to be a pattern tonight, but doesn’t worry to much about it because of the drink and because it just means more time with Arthur.
Alayna watches Arthur from her table walk back in from taking a piss outside. He stumbles into a working girl at the base of the staircase, “You want some company cowboy?” He looks to be taking a second to see who was talking to him but he answers, “Umm, no thank-k ya’ ma’am.”
He makes his way back to Alayna, “She looked like Lenny, didn' she?” She chuckles at his statement at he sits down with her going back to drinking his beer.
“You were still ever the gentlemen Arthur.”
“She’s not the kind of company I want.”
W R E H E I E H S ?
All three of them stumble into the street laughing, drinking, and yelling. Lenny throws up near some horses hitched up in front of the saloon.
“Hey—!”
The sheriff and some deputies are marching towards them from up the road.
“Lenny! Run!” Alayna laughs and pushes him towards the bank. Grabbing Arthurs hand she starts to run down the alley trying to lead them behind the saloon, they end up stumbling, Arthur wraps his arms around her catching her, giggling and leaning into the crook of her neck sending tingling shivers up and down her body. They both end ups laughing as they stumble down and around the end of the alley.
“There they are!” A deputy rounds the general store, pointing at the two laughing drunk idiots.
“You’ll never catch us alive!” Arthur yells turning and dragging Alayna by the hand in the opposite direction. They end up running and jumping fences all along the back of Valentine, laughing and trying not to fall over anything.
They manage to escape and hide behind the church at the end of the street. Alayna pulls Arthur behind the building, Arthur leaning against the building Alayna’s forehead leaning against his chest, hands still clasped together as they try to catch their breath.
Alayna can feel Arthur chuckling to himself, shoulders shaking. “Shush,” She looks up, putting a finger to his lips and peaking around the corner to check, “They’ll find us.”
He’s staring at her. Hard. His eyes darting around her face. Her lips. Her eyes. They way strands of her hair have fallen out of her plait and have fallen in front of her face. Does she realize what she doing? Being this close? Finger still on his lips? Oh, now she’s looking at him, and theres a dawning look on her face. Now she realizes.
Her finger slowly traces his parted lips, they’re chapped from being in the sun everyday. But still very much kissable. If either one of them were to lean in just an inch or two their lips would touch. Does he want that? Alayna looks up from his lips to see his pupils blown wide, she can hardly see they hazel that surrounds them. Yes. They’re breathing each other in. Arthurs hand that is not clasped in hers comes up and cups her neck fingers brushing into her hair, they lean into each other.
So close.
*F W E E T!*
It was like a spell was broken. They snap apart and begin their run again.
Hands still clasped together.

To Charley // Dec 31, 2016 (11:54 pm) Davis: Hey Charley, I don't want to take up too much of your time. I know you and the family are probably a few books deep at the spades table. I'm with a few of the guys right now and I couldn't stop thinking about this last year. It's been a lot for people all over the country, but for us? You lost your dad so close to the start of this year. But you didn't let that stop you. You built a fucking empire Charley, and I am so proud of you for that. That'll never change. Look I'm sorry that I couldn't be who you needed me to be. Sorry that I got caught up and lost you and Micah the way that I did. Sorry that I hurt you baby. And I hope that in the new year, I can show you just how sorry I am and earn the chance (not the right) to be a part of your life again. Davis: Anyway, happy new year Charley. You deserve every ounce you gave to me.
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (8:13 am) Charley: Happy new year, Davis. I actually meant to text you back last night, but finding the words to do that was a lot harder than I expected it to be. Thank you, first of all, for saying what you did and for apologizing. You keep saying that you're sorry, that you've grown, to all of the press, and I might actually be starting to believe you. But even more than that, I want to thank you for not asking. For actually respecting the boundaries here and letting me start this new life. It wouldn't have been possible without you coming down here, so I will always owe a debt to you for that. You kept your word last year, and I hope you do the same in the new one. Be there for Micah and show up when you can to be there for the people who still root for you. I wish you the best.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:12 am) Davis: You can be honest you know? I mean I know that's the nice part of you talking but you have always been honest with me
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:15 am) Charley: And what's the point of that? Look, I want you to do well because that reflects well on me, and the team, and on Micah. I want you to play and grow and never hurt another person the way that you hurt us. What more do you want?
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:20 am) Davis: I want to talk to you, Charley. Want to hear from the person who was the most important person in my life for eighteen years
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:23 am) Charley: Then maybe you shouldn't have slept with other women. Maybe you shouldn't have gotten caught and then you shouldn't have lied to my face and cost me three million dollars and the ability to sleep at night. Davis, I am doing my very best to still help you and run the brand that I helped you create. But that has to be all that we have. I can't do this again.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:25 am) Davis: I'm not asking for anything
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:27 am) Charley: Just like you weren't asking in October? Or asking Micah to spy on me? He told me all about your leading questions, Davis. Did you think you could keep asking him about what I was doing and he wouldn't let me know?
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:29 am) Davis: I just wanted to know if you were serious about this guy
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:31 am) Charley: Then ask me, not Micah.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:32 am) Davis: Are you Davis: Serious about this guy
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:35 am) Charley: You don't get to ask me that.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:36 am) Davis: You told me to ask
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:37 am) Charley: I didn’t mean it. You should understand what it’s like to say something you don’t mean
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:38 am) Davis: I meant every word I said to you, baby
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:39 am) Charley: Sure you did. Davis, I am not getting sucked back into this again. I’m sick of talking in circles with you. I'll talk to Miriam when I have something else to say.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:44 am) Davis: That's it? Davis: You're done with this conversation? Davis: We started off so well. Charley, please just talk to me again. It doesn't have to mean anything.
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:47 am) Charley: Of course it means something. You think I can talk to you and not think of everything you put me through? You think we can just be friends now? If it's not about our son or our business, then I don't want to talk to you.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:50 am) Davis: When you say stuff like that, it sounds like you're not over me Davis: and if you're not over me, then why are you with this guy? Davis: You can't keep playing with people because you don't know what you want
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (9:55 am) Charley: I've been with Remy for almost six months now so I'm pretty sure I know what I want. Every day, it gets a little easier to be without you and conversations like this only help that. So be careful. You don't want to start this year by completely losing my support.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (9:57 am) Davis: All this over some guy? Davis: Charley come on Davis: seriously? Davis: You know you said the same thing in the divorce and you didn't cut me off then. You can't do this without me
To Davis West // Jan 01, 2017 (10:00 am) Charley: Unlike you, I have a whole life outside of what I do. Being your agent, running the mill, those are only part of who I am. And Micah and Remy and the rest of my family get to know the full version of who I am now. Every ounce from before and SO many more. Charley: Try me again, Davis, and I will burn everything you have to the ground. Charley: Go on and keep texting me. I'm done for now.
To Charley // Jan 01, 2017 (10:02 am) Davis: You don't mean that

To Charley Bordelon // Jan 01, 2017 (10:10 am) Remy: You ever coming back to bed?
To Remy Newell // Jan 01, 2017 (10:11 am) Charley: Soon. Coffee?
To Charley Bordelon // Jan 01, 2017 (10:12 am) Remy: Yes ma'am Remy: You okay?
To Remy Newell // Jan 01, 2017 (10:13 am) Charley: I've been worse. I'll see you upstairs once it's ready, okay?

To Daddy (Ernest Bordelon) // Jan 01, 2017 (10:17 am) Charley: First New Years down here in ages and you weren't here with us. Micah ran Blue through the whole house on his shoulders. They toasted their sparkling cider at midnight (Nova "snuck" something into Micah's glass, but at least she gives a heads up now before spoiling him) I probably shouldn't be doing this. Someone new could have your number already, but if it is someone new, could you not reply? Just skip over this message and let a girl pretend for a second or two.
Daddy, I'm sorry I didn't say goodbye before your homegoing. I let myself get all caught up in everything happening with Davis. I could've been there sooner. I could've given you the time you deserved. And I do everything I can now to give that time and that advice and love to everybody out here, but it's not gonna fix it, will it? It's not gonna change anything?
You'd love the mill. The whole community's grinding out there, and we finally showed that family what happens when you mess with the Bordelons. I'll tell you all about it one day. Until then, I love you, Daddy.
(And this year's not for you; it's for me. And it's going to be my best one yet. I promise.)

Making Distance Learning Work
Hi, everyone, Lindsay here. As a parent of school-aged kids, the upcoming school year is front and center in my mind. Like you, I’m trying to figure out how to make distance learning work for my family. Before starting today’s post, I want to acknowledge that everyone’s situation is different. Family structures, finances, support systems, living arrangements, access to technology, and employment all affect how we’ll approach this upcoming school year. Not to mention, our kids have unique needs, strengths, and challenges.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. A lot of parents are facing tough dilemmas. Their school districts’ solutions simply aren’t workable for them for various reasons, sometimes reflecting larger societal issues. While I’m going to offer some simple, concrete steps and encouragement, I also don’t want to minimize the challenges that some people are facing. I’d love for other parents/caregivers to join the discussion in the comments and let us know how you’re juggling everything.
The new school year is almost upon us, and I’m sure I’m not the only parent who feels like my head has been spinning for five months. After being thrown into distance learning in March, school districts are still scrambling to figure out what’s happening this fall. Teachers and parents are rightfully worried about how to balance seemingly un-balanceable interests: educating our kids, supporting working parents, making sure all kids have equal learning opportunities (always an issue), maintaining kids’ socioemotional wellbeing, and allowing schools to stay funded, all while protecting the health and safety of students, their families, teachers, and staff.
What a mess. It turns out that living through a global pandemic is hard and exhausting.
In the U.S. at least, many of our kids aren’t going back to school, not physically. Certainly, none of our kids is going back to anything like the school they knew before. Some of us are lucky enough to have options—distance or hybrid learning, co-ops, charters, or homeschooling. Others are going to have to go with whatever their district decides. This post is aimed primarily at parents/caregivers whose kids are distance or hybrid learning, but it also applies if you’re choosing a different route instead.

Get a notebook and pencil, call a family meeting, and:
1. Decide What You Want to Accomplish This Year
This isn’t about making a concrete plan so much as a general mission statement for your family. What will allow you to feel like this year was a success? What do you need to do to protect the mental health and happiness of the people in your household?
Since we’re all being thrust into something new anyway, it’s the perfect time to pause and consider what’s most important when it comes to your kids’ education. What, and how, would you really like your kids to learn? Given their druthers, what topics would they choose to pursue? Some families are choosing to homeschool this year, seizing the opportunity to try something completely different. On the other hand, if you have a high schooler on track to apply for academic scholarships, perhaps staying on that path is your top priority.
For some families, managing their kids’ social and emotional wellbeing is going to come before academics this year. Maybe you’ll do your best to go with the flow of whatever your district is offering, but let go of all expectations about grades, schedules, and getting dressed every day.
There are no right or wrong answers here, but it’s important that everyone is on the same page.
2. Identify Your Village
Even with social distancing, there are ways we can support one another. Make a list of all the people who can be there for you this year, and vice versa. Then, start to rally the troops.
Do you have grandparents or aunts and uncles who can take an hour or two per week to read or do homework over Skype? What skills and talents do your friends and family members have that they could share—things like organizing cooking, music, art, or science lessons? Do your friends have high school or college-age kids who can tutor or babysit (safely, of course)?
Some families are creating “learning pods” with a few other families. The kids band together and do schoolwork, while the parents share the load. Perhaps this is feasible for you. Otherwise, maybe you organize standing Minecraft playdates or a movie or book club so your kids can socialize, and you can get your own work done.
Don’t forget about yourself. Who will you talk to when you feel overwhelmed? How will you get breaks when you need them?
3. Budget Your Finances AND Your Time
Lay it all out there. Realistically, how much time can you spend monitoring your kids’ schoolwork? If you have a partner or co-parent, decide how you’ll partition your time. Figure out what you’ll need from your village. Be honest about how much both you and your kids will be able to accomplish.
If your kid is expected to be on the computer from 9 to 3, and that’s simply not going to happen, contact their teacher and ask for accommodations. Better yet, propose an alternative that is realistic for your family. If you’re working from home, explore whether you have flexibility with your hours. There might be a way to start earlier and take two-hour lunch breaks, for example. Make sure to ask if your employer is offering childcare subsidies, which can often go to a family member who helps watch your kids.
Figure out how much money you have available to spend on school this year. For us, rec sports are canceled, so those registration fees bought a not-too-expensive laptop for schoolwork. (By the way, laptops and Chromebooks are in high demand already. Get yours now.)
If you have more time than money, maybe you are the person who can coordinate the learning pod or organize used book swaps if the library is closed. If you have more money than time, you might sign your kids up for online classes and extracurricular activities, or hire a tutor to help with challenging subjects. Sites like Outschool and Coursera offer all sorts of classes your kids might enjoy.
Connect to Homeschoolers
Homeschoolers have the most experience making home learning work. Although homeschooling is different from distance learning, I bet you’ll feel much more confident after reading a few blogs or talking to your friends who homeschool.
Here are some things I’ve learned from homeschooling friends:
Daily schedules work great for some families, but they aren’t mandatory for success. Likewise, if you have room to set up a designated classroom area in your home, great. The couch works too. Whatever system works for your family is fine, and you should do it without guilt. Who cares if your kids sleep till 10 and are doing classwork at 7:30 p.m. under the kitchen table if that’s your rhythm (and they aren’t sleeping through all their Zooms)?
There are tons of free online resources available to help kids learn. We aren’t stuck with whatever the schools give us if our kids need more.
Even seasoned homeschoolers will tell you that it’s hard. The struggle is real, and it doesn’t mean you are failing.
Pretty much everything our kids do during the day—reading, watching videos, playing Lego, coloring, digging in the garden—counts as learning. Going for walks is PE. Don’t feel extra pressure to fill every minute of their school day with activities that look like “work.” All of us Primal parents probably know this, but it’s easy to forget when we’re so focused on schoolwork.
You can prioritize. Most homeschoolers, and even elementary school teachers, don’t teach every subject every day. They do math and language arts most days, though. Practice and repetition are important in these subjects. “Lessons” can include math games, doing mental math problems in the car, reading to your kids and having them read to you, watching read-along videos on YouTube, and so much more. (Talk to your kids’ teachers if their daily assignments aren’t manageable, too.)
Let your kids’ interests guide some of their choices. If they are reading the Percy Jackson novels, check out documentaries or podcasts on world mythologies, or virtually visit museums to see ancient Greek art. For your science lover, grab an inexpensive pocket microscope and encourage them to keep a science notebook documenting their discoveries. Teachers Pay Teachers offers enrichment activities for almost any subject, plus decorations and organizers for your home “classroom.”
If you don’t know any homeschool families, look on Reddit and Facebook. More than likely, you’ll find a local homeschooling group or one that focuses on your kids’ specific needs.
Give Yourself and Your Kids Plenty of Breaks
I mean this literally and figuratively. During the day, allow for plenty of downtimes. Let kids move between tasks and take mental breaks. Even in school, they really aren’t doing focused work for long periods, especially in the lower grades. There will be no getting away from screens this fall, but I’ll be encouraging my kids to walk away regularly.
You need breaks, too. Kids of any age can take 20 to 30 minutes of quiet time in their bedrooms in the afternoon so you can take a breather.
Also, give everyone plenty of grace, yourself included. We’re living through a pandemic. Everyone is coping with grief and pandemic fatigue right now, even if we aren’t labeling it as such. Some days won’t be great. There will be tears. Tasks will not get completed on time. Some nights, dinner will be cheese and (almond flour) crackers with baby carrots if we’re lucky. Laundry will sit in the basket unfolded. It’s ok.
Remember: This is Temporary, and We’re All Doing the Best We Can
I know the advice to do your best sounds so trite to anyone facing decisions that feel impossible. Still, what else can we do?
So many parents are stressing about their kids falling behind. Maybe I’m being naïve, but I’m not too worried about that. It’s not that my kids are exceptionally resilient or anything, but nothing about this year is going to be “normal.” Trying to hold ourselves to previous school years’ standards is unrealistic and unfair.
Also, kids are resilient. When all this is over, and the dust starts to settle, it’s going to be a whole new educational landscape. Everyone is going to have to catch up in one way or another. We will figure it out.
If your kid is having a hard time with the social isolation, or because they have learning challenges that their schools are not accommodating at home, I’m not blithely telling you not to worry. It stinks that so many families are struggling, and that existing inequities are being magnified by distance learning. I’m saying that none of us needs the added pressure of trying to recreate a typical school year during exceptional times.
Look for Silver Linings
We’re understandably focused mostly on the challenges that come with distance learning, but it can also have its advantages. Many kids are actually thriving at home. For some who were struggling socially or academically, distance learning has been a welcome change. A lot of us parents are reexamining our priorities and finding that we are excited to teach our kids in different ways. There is, for some families, a distinct silver lining.
Gratitude can be an excellent coping tool during stressful times. Can you think of three things that you appreciate about distance learning? Ask your kids to weigh in. My kids would say: working at their own pace, sleeping in, pants are optional. Revisit your list every couple of months and see what you can add. You might find gratitude for new connections in your homeschool pod, or for being there to witness your child’s aha moment when she mastered cross-multiplication.
Hang in there, friends.

25 Useful Ways to Save Money Everyday-Part 2
This post contains affiliate links, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a commission or other benefit at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting The Daily Change Jar.
Here are 25 MORE ways to save money every day!
If you haven't already, check out the previous post on 25 Useful Ways to Save Money Everyday Part 1.
1. Dilute your Conditioner
Did you know that you can dilute your conditioner and it will still be just as effective? I did this the other day when we were just about out of conditioner and my oldest daughter (the picky 13-year-old didn’t even notice ;-) ).
2. Use dryer balls instead of dryer sheets
Although if you read the previous post I shared a link to a post on how to make your own dryer sheets-which is also a great way to save money. However, dryer balls are also another option. You can purchase a pack for 6 here for under $10 or if you would prefer to make your own, check out this post by The Seasoned Homemaker. Also adding a little bit of essential oil before popping them into the dryer gives your clothes a great scent boost!
3. Consider giving personal gifts for Holidays
I used to do this all the time when I was younger and seemed to have more free time (free time? What is that?!?) And this was before Pinterest was a thing! I would DIY my Christmas gifts. Even before Pinterest was a thing, I DIYed my Christmas gifts-frugal and meaningful! Click To Tweet One year I made each of my grandmothers a little rocking chair out of clothespins with a cute little stuffed bear in a straw hat. How many years later, they still have them! As I got older I did things that included the kids. Framed handprints in clay for my husband’s first father’s day. Nice framed pictures of the kids with their handprints for grandmas and grandpas. Every time I have MADE my husband something for Christmas, his birthday, or father’s day he has appreciated it 1000 times more than anything I have ever bought him. PLUS it is more frugal! Last year there was a gift that I wanted to get him that I found on Etsy-which was listed for $145! Now I am all for supporting people on Etsy, but I couldn’t afford it at the time. So I improvised, well more like copied the idea and made the gift myself. The total cost? $12! Yup, a savings of $133! Pretty darn frugal if you ask me!
4. Eat seasonal
When you are at the grocery store, make sure you are looking for things that are in season. They tend to be cheaper that way! A pint of strawberries in Wisconsin in the middle of winter can run $5 or more, while during the summer they are at least half that!
5. Tailor your own clothes
Ok, so I admit, I normally hand this task off to my grandmother. First off she is much better at it than I am. Gotta learn to outsource those kinda things right? Secondly, she already has her sewing stuff set up 24/7, while I have to drag mine out of the basement and set it up every time. If I do plan on fixing clothes that are torn, too long, or need to be sewn in some way, I just pile them up until I have a good amount that makes it worthwhile to drag out my sewing machine. But it really is a way to save. There have been many times where my kids just get a small tear in their clothes, or I get a rip in the seam of my pants. Should I just toss them? NEVER! Fix the darn things rather than going out and buying a whole new pair! Or better yet-upcycle the garment into something new! Feel free to check out my board from my personal Pinterest account where I have like 1000 different ideas saved on how to upcycle old clothes! (Don't judge my boards-I am slowly working to reorganize them!)
6. Don’t toss your outdated clothing
If you find that your clothes are outdated, a little stained or ripped, don’t throw them out. Wear them around the house or for pajamas. I have quite a few random pants and shirts that I use for when I paint, dye my hair, or know that I will be working on something potentially messy.
7. Trade for babysitting
So I really hate paying for babysitters. Unless it’s a teenager (who I know well) that is looking to make some extra cash-support the side hustle! I have plenty of friends with kids around the same age as my kids. Trade off nights to watch each other's kids. Or plan sleepovers for the little ones at their friends’ houses :-) I have one friend in particular who is a lifesaver when it comes to watching my kids and even though she hardly ever asks me to watch her kids, she will gladly take mine anytime. You know who you are ;-)
8. Keep the heat turned down
Wisconsin winters can get pretty darn cold! My mother tends to turn up her heat so much I am sweating just sitting in her house. We prefer to save a few bucks and keep the heat turned a little lower. Nothing a few layers of sweaters can’t fix!
9. Do a clothing swap
I heard about this idea a while ago and I have yet to try it. I have an entire room in my basement filled with clothes. Everything from newborn girls to adult women’s to boys and men’s clothes. Instead of donating the things you don’t wear anymore, get together with some other moms (or dads) and swap clothes. This can work really well for kids clothes especially. But if you have some girlfriends that are around the same size as you, or you have clothes that you have grown out of (or maternity clothes) see what you can trade. You never know what you might find!
10. Stockpile great deals!
Find any amazing deals recently you can get a bunch of stuff for really cheap? Like toothpaste for $1 a tube? Stock up on it! This is where couponing can come in really handy! I have found this particularly helpful when it comes to donating items. Homeless or Women's shelters are always in need of personal care type items. But frugal, but give back! Even though you think you may have it bad, there is always someone out there who has it worse. Even though you think you may have it bad, there is always someone out there who has it worse. 11. Purge things that are taking up space
My husband and I go through spurts of purging things. Which is really liberating actually. We will start in one room and look at all the crap we never use, like that cake pop maker my daughter wanted so badly and only used once. Or the plethora of Monster High Dolls we have accumulated over the years that just sits in the basement. There are two advantages to this. You are decluttering. You can make a few extra bucks by listing these items on local Facebook buy/sell sites.
12. Buy in bulk
One of the things that I absolutely love that stores are doing now is putting how much the cost per unit or ounce is on the labels on the shelves. Saves me from doing any math! When you are buying in bulk you can save quite a bit. As long as you are purchasing things that aren’t going to go bad. Plus it is a good life lesson when I take the kids shopping, we can talk about comparing prices. Just because it might be listed as less expensive doesn't actually mean that it is.
13. Volunteer your time instead of purchasing gifts
Many years ago I worked as a CNA in a nursing home and it would break my heart when the holidays would roll around and some of the residents had no visitors. If you can, instead of purchasing gifts for people, give your time instead. Go volunteer your time at nursing homes, humane societies, daycares, or other organizations that tend to be short on volunteers. Especially during the holidays. For many people, giving your time is priceless and means so much more to them over a physical gift.
14. You don’t have to buy gifts for everyone
When my husband and I first got together we would get gifts for everyone in our families. There were his 6 sisters, about another 6 nieces and nephews, my brother and his girlfriend, my 7 aunts and uncles, a bunch of cousins, their kids, the list went on. It would cost us a fortune just trying to be nice to everyone during the holidays. Not that I don't like being nice and giving to others during the holidays, but let's get real here! Now, our list is very limited-parents, grandparents, and kids. Plus we have 5 kids to buy for, that is enough right there! And again, my parents and grandparents would prefer something more meaningful that the kids and I make over anything we can buy. Save on gas!
15. Use a bike or walk where you can.
I know this can be a lot more difficult with kids, but there are times when it is nice out that we can bike to the store or walk to the playground instead of driving.
16. Carpool!
This is one we try to do when going out of town for gymnastics meets. Gas can get expensive when you are driving 3 hours one way! Of if you live out of town, see if your work has any type of carpool program. Plus if your not driving, that's more time you can get in reading the latest posts on your favorite blogs ;-)
17. Start a compost
Even if you live in an apartment, you can start a compost for even the smallest garden with these cute little countertop compost bins. I hate throwing away food scraps just as much as I hate throwing away food. I hope to one day have a nice little hobby farm with pigs that I can feed all my scraps to and create an almost zero waste homestead. Future goals!
18. Find free entertainment
If you look hard enough I am sure there are things in your community that you can find to do, for FREE! Remember from the previous post I talked about checking out the library? Just search around the web or find a Facebook group in your area that keeps track of free events in your area.
19. Don’t impulse buy!
Have you ever heard of shoppers remorse? You get so excited about buying something and then a day or two later you wish you wouldn’t have made the purchase. If you see something that you really want to buy, whether it’s a new TV or the latest “business opportunity” that your friend has been talking to you about, wait on it. Wait at least 72 hours and seriously consider if it is something that you really need. There have been times where I found a software that I knew would just take my business to the next level (great sales copy is meant to sell right?) bought it and then realized I didn’t actually need it or it wasn't as great as I thought it would be after I tried it out. Although I never purchase anything like that unless there is a money back guarantee. That way if it sucks I can get my money back!
20. Pick quality over quantity
If you are going to make any type or larger purchase, make sure you are really looking at the quality of the item. Don't buy something just because it's the latest thing or all your friends are buying it. Make sure you are checking online reviews of things. There have been plenty of times that I have passed up a purchase after doing some due diligence on a purchase. Yeah it may look great on the outside, but after reading reviews you realize that it's only the packaging your paying for.
21. Workout at home
There is a quote that I really love: “If you really want to do something you’ll find a way. If you don’t you’ll find an excuse” by Jim Rohn. I could find a dozen different reasons to keep my gym membership and not workout at home-not enough room, the kids are in my way, the dogs get in my way, I don’t know where to start, blah blah blah. But let’s be real, these are excuses, and ditching the gym membership to save like $65 a month is worth it. Especially if I'm not using it like every day.
22. Create a budget and stick to it
I go a lot more in depth as to how to create a budget in this post. You need to be in control of your money and tell it where to go. Try out something like Personal Capital or Mint to track your spending. They even give you fancy little pie charts!
23. Meal plan
Meal planning can save you a ton! It does take some advanced planning but is well worth it! Check out my post on meal planning here to see how and why you should meal plan to save both time and energy every month.
24. Make a shopping list
Along with making a meal plan, make sure you include a grocery shopping list. It is so easy to go to the store, even more so when you’re hungry, and way overspend. *Tip-don't send an 8-month pregnant lady to the store alone at night when she hasn't eaten, all you will get is ice cream and cookies! If you stick to your list you will be less likely to purchase items you don’t actually need.
25. Don’t use credit or debit cards when shopping
When you go shopping, whether it’s grocery shopping or school shopping, try to use cash instead of using a debit or credit card. When you are using cash you have a limited amount that you can spend so you don’t have to worry about overspending. Just make sure that you are adding up everything you buy as you are shopping so you don’t get to the checkout and realize you are short. Annoying and embarrassing!
What are some creative ways that you save money every month?

‘Tis the season to overdo it with stuffing, turkey, buttery rolls, and pie, pie, and more pie. With all the office parties, cookie swaps, and holiday potlucks (just us?) this time of year, it’s especially hard to avoid overeating. But really, stuffing yourself rotten isn’t limited to the holidays. Sometimes that late-night frozen pizza somehow becomes single-serving with gut-busting repercussions. Hey, it happens to the best of us. But the real problem is usually what happens after—in our body and our mind. Are you filled with regret, dejectedly pondering starting a juice cleanse? Or do you feel the urge to go for broke, double down, and top it all off with a big bowl of froyo (or maybe a big bowl of Reese’s, mochi, Captain Crunch, and rainbow sprinkles)? Do you wallow in the damage for hours or even days? Get Greatist on Facebook Messenger And physically, do you fall into a food coma? Get that feeling like your food has turned to concrete in your abdomen and/or suffer from hours of nausea and discomfort? Don't fret. Sometimes reframing the situation and having an action plan is all you need to rebound ASAP. Emotionally: Reframe the Sitch It can be easy, post-gluttony, to beat yourself up. Things like “no self-control,“ "lazy," and “gross” can get thrown around. Maybe you run five miles and end up making yourself sick. Or swear off eating for an entire day. It's super easy to treat your body to all types of abuse post-gorgefest, but here's where taking a step outside yourself is critical. As the custodian for your body, you’re responsible for its care—just like you’d be responsible for a child that you’re babysitting. Imagine finding this kid knee-deep in candy bar wrappers, halfway into an all-out candy binge. Caught red-handed, this kid looks up at you, terrified, ashamed, awaiting punishment. What do you do? Do you yell insults at the child? March him or her over to the treadmill to run off every last calorie? Of course not. You're not Mommie Dearest. With that in mind, let any name calling and punishment stop. You will treat yourself with the same compassion you would treat this child. Why is this helpful? In his book The Marshmallow Test, psychologist and Columbia professor Walter Mischel describes how emotional situations like this can stay in a heated place, which could lead to more self-destructive or self-punishing behavior. To counter that, it helps to cool your distress by “self distancing” and entering into “cognitive reappraisal." In other words, viewing yourself from a distance or as another (e.g. a child) helps engage a cool, rational reaction where you can regroup and rebound. So what should you do to regroup? We're glad you asked... Physically: Your Immediate Action Plan Let's handle the physical symptoms for bloating and food coma first. Don’t: Let the weight of your food baby take you down for the count (or straight to the couch). Lying down can give you heartburn and other gastro issues. It can even aggravate respiratory issues for people with asthma. Do: Get moving. Light exercise is the best thing you can do to help your body bounce back. Operative word: light. Jogging around the block might not be smart, thanks to the high barf factor, but taking a walk can do a world of good. Not only does it speed up digestion, it’ll also even out your blood sugar and clear glucose out of your bloodstream. Another idea is light yoga. Certain twisting poses have been known to assist and alleviate digestive woes. Don’t: Drink alcohol or coffee. Knocking back a boozy “digestif” drink after a calorie rager is a common practice for many, but they don’t actually assist with digestion. In fact, alcohol can pump the breaks on your body’s digestive process. Coffee may swing you back up from a food slump with a jolt of caffeine, but it also doesn’t do any good for digestion. Do: Drink water, seltzer, or teas. It might seem counterintuitive to drink water when your belly is full to bursting, but H2O helps move along digestion. It can also battle sodium and carb bloat, and it’s a preemptive strike against any post-gluttony constipation. You can also try seltzer, which is proven to relieve indigestion. Herbal teas with ginger, peppermint, and fennel have been shown to ease that I’m-so-stuffed feeling. In short, keep these liquids coming. Looking Ahead: Your Back-in-the-Game Action Plan OK, you’ve got your head on straight and you’ve forgiven this entirely human moment of overdoing it. And after hitting the two W’s (water and walking) and letting a few hours lapse, your overstretched gut feels like it's returned to its normal size. Now what can you do to move forward from this food bender beyond the short-term? Start with this rebound checklist: 1. Plan your next healthy meal Like we said before, it’s easy to rebound from a gluttonous moment and overreact by shunning food. But don’t let the pendulum swing to the other extreme. Ground yourself with a healthy meal that fits right in with your life pre-bender. Keep in mind, skipping meals can trigger another trip to Taco Town. Even if you’re not hungry, simply planning your next meal is a powerful act of self-care that can remind you that food is not public enemy No. 1. 2. Plan your next workout Yes, you don’t want to go for a jog right after you did a faceplant into your mom’s pumpkin pie, but scheduling your next workout is also a strong reminder that after this gluttonous interlude, you’re getting back to your normal fitness routine. It’s also a great affirmation of how you see yourself: You are not defined by this food bender. For example, you could say, “I am not only the person who ate all the pumpkin pie. I am also a runner. A runner that just ate lots of pie. But a runner nonetheless.“ 3. Get some perspective The world is bigger than a bag of chips (or several bags). And this moment of indulgence is but a blip on the radar of life. Tune in to larger issues: Read a newspaper, a book, or even your old journals. There are bigger things to occupy your mind than this moment. 4. Call a friend or hug it out Sometimes food benders come from a place of loneliness or discomfort. If you’ve realized your spree was triggered by these feelings, don’t ignore them just because “the damage is done.” Reach out to friends, hug it out, and get the companionship you need. Feed this emotional hunger. Likewise if you look back on a holiday or family celebration and realize you were stress-eating through it, give yourself the tools you need to de-stress and unpack some of that. And of course if you spot a reoccurring pattern with overeating, getting professional help from a therapist or counselor can be incredibly helpful. The Takeaway Admit that overdoing it on food is the human condition. We all have our moments. How could we not, in a world where cronuts exist? As a popular inspirational quote says, "You are not defined by your mistakes, but your reaction." Or as a wise kitten once said, "Hang in there!" Getting back on that healthy-eating horse is as easy as practicing a little self-care.
