Christina Martinez Adame was driving south on the 405 Freeway near Seal Beach Boulevard on April 27 when she heard a loud boom. She said she believes her rear window was shot out.

“You had glass coming into the car, the power of the wind going through. I felt like our car was caving in,” Adame, 49, said.

Another motorist’s window shattered that day in the same area at about the same time, and these aren’t the only reports of similar incidents.

“Every day, somebody is telling me, ‘This happened to so-and-so.’ ‘It happened to me.’ ‘It happened to another parent,’ ” said Adame, who lives in Los Alamitos.

These accounts have reached investigators at California Highway Patrol offices, who are comparing notes with one another across Southern California in an effort to determine who — or what — is responsible for the damage.

CHP officials say they are hesitant to alert the public about the existence of a serial shooter because while some of the damage shows tell-tale signs of bullets or BB pellets, they say there’s little evidence that those confirmed attacks are related. And in many other cases, the officials say, it’s unclear whether the damage is attributable to gunfire or simply road junk.

Investigators are continuing to look for answers.

“They definitely have been in contact with surrounding areas. They have been using every resource necessary to get things sorted out,” said Officer Dan Olivas, a spokesman for the CHP’s Inland Division.

That can’t come soon enough for Lisa Sanford, 55, a Corona resident who was driving south on the 15 Freeway in Norco just north of the 91 Freeway in March when one of the windows on her SUV exploded.

“I kept hearing ‘crack, crack, crack, crack, crack.’ I was in shock. I was freaking out,” Sanford said.

When she examined the SUV, she found eight strikes from what appeared to have been ammunition from a BB or pellet gun fired at close range from another motorist.

There have been a number of other similar incidents this spring in the Inland Empire.

“It’s well above what you would consider normal,” Olivas said.

So far, he said, no one has been able to link them.

That’s also the case in Orange County.

Adame said one of the CHP officers who examined her car told her, “Oh, wow, that looks like all the other shootings” — a dozen of them in the county in the past week, Adame said she was told.

Officer Mitch Smith, a spokesman for the CHP’s Westminster office, which is investigating Adame’s incident, said investigators there are looking into “approximately five” similar reports spanning April 19 to Tuesday morning, May 4.

“We have no reason to believe they are related. But to call them freeway shootings or similarincidents, it’s unclear at this point,” Smith said.

Deadly gunfire

In addition to the April 27 window blowouts on the 405, there certainly have been enough other headline-grabbing incidents to rattle motorists:

• On Aug. 29, a man driving a car on the 405 in Seal Beach was shot to death. Smith said that while he could not elaborate, the circumstances of that incident are far different than others being reported.

• On Dec. 14, the driver of a pickup was killed on the 15 Freeway in Ontario in a shooting that the CHP said it believes might have been a road-rage incident.

• In the early morning hours of April 27, a gunman wounded a driver near USC and killed two others in separate vehicles nearby. He was chased by police and fired on a vehicle on the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles until coming to a stop on the 91 Freeway in Fullerton. There, he and officers exchanged gunfire before he was fatally shot.

• On May 2, a man driving on the 60 Freeway in Industry was shot and injured by someone passing by in another car, according to the CHP.

Adame and Sanford, victims of the window blowouts, said they wonder whether there were more freeway shootings that the CHP hasn’t reported in order to prevent the public from panicking.

But if investigators were to determine there was a serial shooter, said Officer Florentino Olivera, a spokesman for the CHP’s Santa Ana office, which patrols most of OC’s freeways, “We would be calling a press conference here.”

Olivera cautioned that windows can also be smashed by car parts and other trash kicked up by traffic. He knows that first hand after a tire tread crashed through the windshield of his personal car. He urged motorists not to be distracted while driving so they can be on the lookout for road junk.

“Sometimes you can’t prevent it,” Olivera said. “There’s debris all over the roadway.”

If it happens to you

CHP officials say drivers should weigh a number of factors if a window should suddenly break.

If you don’t see a threat, the Inland Division’s Olivas said, pull over right away, particularly if your view of the freeway is impaired.

“If you can exit the freeway safely, even better,” he said.

Call 911 immediately after safely pulling over, Olivas said.

It’s important to provide your exact location to dispatchers so officers can canvass the area for shooters, said Officer Mary Bailey, a spokeswoman for the CHP’s Border Division, which patrols Orange County, southern Riverside County and San Diego County.

And, Bailey said, “We are going to want to see your vehicle. We’re going to want to take pictures and see if we have any evidence. There might be a round in there.”

You have to be a certain kind of person to appreciate what the Jeep Cherokee has to offer. It’s not the best-handling SUV in its class, nor is it the most techy. Other crossovers look better, and many offer more utility. But only the Cherokee will do proper Jeep stuff. If off-roading’s your game, this SUV is for you.

The Cherokee slots between the Compass and the Grand Cherokee in Jeep’s lineup. When the fifth-generation model came onto the scene in 2013, its design was certainly controversial. The Cherokee received a refresh in 2019, so its looks aren’t quite so divisive anymore.

Cherokee Latitude, Latitude Plus, Altitude, Latitude Lux, Limited and High Altitude trims are available with two- or four-wheel drive, while the Upland, North Edition, Trailhawk and Trailhawk Elite trims are four-wheel-drive only. Drivers get a choice of a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated I4, a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 or a 3.2-liter V6, depending on trim. No matter what engine or driveline you choose, every Cherokee comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Tricky transmission

Earlier this year, my colleague Craig Cole tested the Cherokee Limited with the 2.0-liter turbo engine. My tester, meanwhile, is the High Altitude with the V6 engine, which offers 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. This is more than enough power for toddling around town, but the nine-speed transmission is problematic — slow to shift and frequently hunting around for the right gear. The trick to smoothing it out is to actually switch the Cherokee’s Selec-Terrain dial to Sport, which helps keep the engine revving in the heart of its powerband, though it means sacrificing a bit of fuel efficiency.

This Jeep is hardly a corner-carver, but it handles itself respectively well. The steering is nicely weighted and the brakes offer confident stopping power. Still, it’s kind of sluggish, the body rolls and overall, it’s not what I’d call fun to drive. If that’s a priority, check out the Mazda CX-5.

Head off road, however, and the Cherokee shines. You can get it with Jeep’s optional Active Drive II four-wheel-drive system with a low range, which also includes a 1-inch suspension lift. Combine that with the Sand/Mud and Rock modes in the Selec-Terrain system, as well as the optional locking rear differential, and the Cherokee can easily go places other compact SUVs can’t.

My tester has the less-robust Active Drive I package, which is essentially all-wheel drive that disconnects the rear axle when it isn’t needed, like when you’re on the highway, for better efficiency. This should be enough for folks who need all-wheel drive for snowy commutes or the occasional dirt road, and its more economical operation helps me achieve the EPA’s combined rating of 22 miles per gallon during a week-long test.

I wouldn’t want to be doing this in a Mazda.

More help on the road

For 2020, Jeep expands the Cherokee’s driver-assistance offerings, with the Advanced Safety Group now available across a greater number of trim levels. This package includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning and rain-sensing wipers. It’s just a shame that no driving aids are standard on lower-grade Cherokees, and things like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert don’t kick in until the Latitude plus. Adaptive cruise control can only be had on the most-expensive models. Meanwhile, most of this tech comes standard on competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

Thankfully, my High Altitude tester has all the bells and whistles, and I really like that I can dial them in through the excellent Uconnect infotainment system. For example, I can adjust the lane-departure warning with early, mid and late settings, and can set the steering intervention to be low, medium or high. The blind-spot monitoring can be set to be just a visual alert, add an audible warning or I can just turn it off. It’s great to have options.

Beyond the adjustable driving aids, I’ve always loved Uconnect for its well-thought-out design. There is a lot of information on each screen, yet somehow it remains clear and easy to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included on both the standard 7.0-inch screen or the optional 8.4-inch display. The native navigation system has excellent graphics but its voice recognition can occasionally struggle.

If you’re looking for advanced driver’s aids you’ll have to pony up for a high-level trim.

I want to give a shoutout to Jeep’s multifunction steering wheel, as well. The front has nicely organized buttons for my phone and cruise control, and arrows to scroll through the gauge cluster information. The buttons on the back of the steering wheel control audio stations, presets, volume and media source. Like Uconnect, it might seem really busy at first, but after a while, I really grow to appreciate this user experience.

As for charging, the Cherokee doesn’t have a wireless charging pad, but my tester has a USB-A and 12-volt outlet in both the front and center consoles. The rear seats get two charge-only USB-A ports, as well as a three-prong, 115-volt, 150-watt outlet. Another 12-volt outlet can be found in the cargo hold.

Inside story

The Cherokee’s interior isn’t really anything to write home about. It’s rugged-looking and the materials are just OK, and my tester’s color palette is particularly dark, with just some contrasting grey stitching to lighten it up. Thankfully, the seats are comfortable and there is plenty of space for people up front or in the back.

Space for your cargo, however, falls below the competition, with 27.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats with the cargo floor in its lowest position and 54.7 cubes overall. The RAV4, meanwhile, goes big with 37.6 and 69.8 cubic feet, respectively, and the CR-V goes gigantic with 39.2 and 75.8. Heck, even the Mazda CX-5 with its sharply sloping rear hatch offers more cargo space.

The Cherokee’s cabin skews more rugged than anything else. If you want luxury appointments, looks elsewhere.

However, there are a fair amount of small storage cubbies in the Cherokee, with a little bin in the front console and a hidey-hole on the dash. Large pockets extend nearly the full length of the front doors.

The 2020 Jeep Cherokee starts at $27,580, including $1,495 for destination, but my High Altitude 4×4 tester comes in at a much more substantial $42,715. Personally, I’d grab the Cherokee Trailhawk, add the Cold Weather package (I must have heated seats) and select the towing package to take advantage of the Jeep’s 4,500-pound tow rating. Very nicely equipped, a Cherokee Trailhawk like my dream spec slots below $40,000, though it doesn’t include many advanced driving aids.

If off-roading is a regular part of your life, the Cherokee is an excellent choice. With all its rugged options and bona fide off-road hardware, it’ll out-shine any other small SUV in the dirt. On pavement, however, the Cherokee can’t quite keep up with its more efficient, better equipped, more spacious competition. The Cherokee is fantastic for Jeep stuff, but as a daily driver, it suffers.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Review: Swallow Your Pride – This Beats an SUV

For most Americans, a minivan is the best people-hauler for the demographic called parents-with-kids-and-all-their-crap. And the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica minivan serves the demographic better than virtually every other sports utility vehicle or minivan. You can have a Pacifica sort-of-inexpensive or trimmed in leather, with or without hiding stowable second-and-third-row seats, or as a plug-in hybrid, all with third-row seats usable by adults. Come 2021, you’ll again be able to get the Pacifica with all-wheel-drive.

The Pacifica handles relatively well. The plug-in hybrid goes 32 miles on battery power and has a battery-plus-engine cruising range of 520 miles. It is roomier and lighter than a full-size SUV. On the downside, some useful driver assists are optional on the Pacifica. Pacifica’s reliability from recent years past is not on par with competing minivans, especially from Toyota and Kia.

The Pacifica is one of the few three-row vehicles comfortable in all three rows.

On the Road with Pacifica

I drove an upscale Pacifica Hybrid with a full suite of driver assists, the latest UConnect 4 infotainment system, and black leather seats with contrasting stitching. It feels roomier than a full-size SUV because it’s roughly the size of the full-size Dodge Durango SUV, 203.8 inches versus the Durango’s 201.2. With a shorter nose and without the sloping rear of some SUVs, plus a couple more inches of width than Durango, there’s a lot more room in the Pacifica for people and cargo inside.

Handling is pretty good for something that weighs a handful of pounds shy of 5,000. It gets to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds via a 3.6-liter V6 Atkinson cycle gas engine (higher efficiency, lower peak power) and an electric motor that net 260 hp, all driving the front wheels. Once in a while during testing, the nine-speed automatic was slow to shift or thunked into the next gear. The shifter is a rotary knob on the dashboard. Most reviewers hate shifter knobs (or buttons). I say: They leave more room for cupholders and phones on the dash or console. Nobody manually shifts a minivan. This knob would work better if it was coated in grippy rubber.

The infotainment system and navigation, called UConnect and now up to version 4, continues to be one of the easier packages to comprehend. The display is 8 inches diagonal, which is good, but a 10-inch display would be nicer (likely on 2021 models).

2020 Chrysler Pacifica.

The Pacifica excels three ways:

Around town, driving is almost zero-cost because the 16-kWh battery tucked under the floor lets you cover 32 miles of commuting to work, car-pooling, and handling daily driving tasks. It will recharge overnight on 120-volt power, or in about two hours at 240 volts. Many owners won’t burn any gasoline most days of the week, although maybe you might, because there’s no button to force the Pacifica to run electric-only before going to the combustion engine. So Chrysler uses an algorithm to decide when to use what. In a week of driving, I averaged 29 mpg, close to Chrysler’s 30 mpg EPA overall rating, which is quite good for a 2.5-ton vehicle.

Second, on longer weekend or vacation trips, you get up to 520 miles of driving. You only have to fill up once a day. Yes, the kids have to go pee more often than that, but the interstate service area choreography of one parent taking the kids to the bathroom while the other heads for the fueling islands, then meeting up while the refueler parent dashes back to the restrooms, seems to save very little time.

For weekday carpooling tasks and weekend family trips, you can fit up to seven people; the middle row is always two buckets, not a bench. And everybody, in every seating position, is plenty comfortable, especially in the hybrid. The under-floor battery means there’s no space for the stowable (Stow ‘N Go) seats that fold into the floor, but those stowable seats are thinner and less comfortable. The comfier PHEV’s seats are heavy to take out, though.

The Pacifica has upscale finishes on most trim lines. The UConnect 4 center stack display is 8.4 inches.

Lots of Trim Lines

Shopping for a Chrysler Pacifica starts with “Where do I start?” There are eight Pacifica gas-engine versions, five of them called Pacifica Touring (gut none called Pacifica Car Pooling); plus six Pacifica Hybrid versions; plus more two gas-engine entry model Pacificas, only they’re called Chrysler Voyagers (explanation below). As for the hybrid models, there are three Touring models (Touring, Touring, 35th Anniversary Touring L) and three Limited models (Limited, Limited 35th Anniversary, Limited Red S). The hybrid 35th Anniversary (of the first Chrysler Corp. minivans) and S models are upholstery, badging, and paint variants. If this sounds confusing, it is, and there’s not much on the Chrysler Pacifica website that helps you see what features are on what trim lines.

The least costly hybrid, the Touring, is $41,490 including $1,495 freight. That is $6,250 more than the gas-engine Touring, but you are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, so really it costs less. The Touring gets you power-sliding doors, heated mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, three-zone climate control, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and USB jacks. Driver assists are blind-spot warning/rear-cross-traffic-alert (same system) and rear parking sonar. No forward-facing driver assists.

The Touring L, $45,780 including freight, may be the sweet spot: It adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate. But it, too, lacks a full range of driver assists.

The Limited, $47,340, is where you can add a fuller array of driver assists. It has nicer leather, vented front seats, navigation, UConnect Theater (rear entertainment), and 20-speaker audio. For $995 you can add the Advanced Safety Tec Group: stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, advanced forward collision warning, advanced lane departure warning, parallel/perpendicular parking assist, front sonar (rear is standard) with auto-stop, and surround cameras. You can also add a $1,895 panoramic sunroof.

The top-line Hybrid Limited Red S fully optioned runs $52,000, before tax credit.

Be still my heart: the 1984 Dodge Caravan, enabler of the soccer mom demographic. It’s also 28 inches shorter than today’s Pacifica.

The Shrinking Minivan Market

Minivans as we know them date to the 1984 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, boxy vehicles, some with woodgrain wrap on the sides. They helped keep Chrysler Corp. alive. (The vehicles, not necessarily the woodgrain.) Sales of minivans, all brands, peaked in 2000 with 1.4 million sold, 8 percent of the year’s 17 million sales. Most had three rows of seats, and even the third row was reasonably comfortable at a time when there were far fewer SUVs. And they drove like cars at a time when SUVs didn’t.

Minivans were popular with college-educated boomer parents in the suburbs who drove their children to sports practices a lot, had similar-to-each-other buying patterns, got involved in the PTA, and tended to vote. Demographers called them soccer moms or soccer parents, which annoyed the heck out of them, more because soccer mom was too easily understood as well as misunderstood. In retaliation – “how dare these people reduce me to two words” – they switched to SUVs that were bigger, top-heavier, tipsier (until electronic stability control came along), cost you 3-5 mpg in fuel economy, and lacked room for teens in row three. Nothing like seeing six kids in shorts and cleats disembark from a GMC Yukon Denali, not a Pacifica, to prove you’re not a soccer dad or mom.

Fast forward to 2019, and sales of the five minivan models (plus leftover Chrysler Town & Countrys) amounted to just over 400,000, or 2 percent of the (again) 17 million sales of light vehicles. The best-seller Dodge Grand Caravan gets the majority of sales in fleet markets, making the Honda Odyssey and Pacifica the top two sellers to individuals.

Between 2000 and today, more than a dozen minivan brands departed the market: Buick Terraza, Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Venture, Chrysler Voyager, Ford Freestar, Ford Windstar Cargo, Mazda MPV, Mercury Monterey, Nissan Quest, Oldsmobile Silhouette, Pontiac Montana, Saturn Relay, and Volkswagen Routan. The one significant entrant is the Kia Sedona in the 2015 model year.

In 2020, the aging Dodge Grand Caravan goes away this spring, to be replaced by the Chrysler Voyager, effectively an entry-level Pacifica. That will likely be the rental-fleet minivan. Insiders say the two-name strategy helps the residual value of the Pacifica. Any time more than half the sales for a model go into fleets, it depresses resale prices.

The 2020 Pacifica measures 203.8 inches long, 79.6 inches wide, and 69.9 inches high. This allows for superb cargo space: 32.3 cubic feet with all seats used, and 140.5 cubic feet with the middle and rear seats down.

Should You Buy?

If you do a lot of urban driving, you’ll likely love how much of it can be on electricity, where the cost of electricity (low) is equivalent in cost to the Pacifica getting 82 mpg on gasoline. It is roomy on legroom as well as side to side shoulder room, so you really can get three across in back.

The Pacifica scores well on IIHS safety tests: good overall on crashworthiness, and a Top Safety Pick. However, it’s light on standard driver safety assists: Blind spot warning is standard, plus government-required features such as a rear camera. If you want a fuller range of assists that help especially on long highway trips, you’ll really want one of the Limited trims and the features of the Advanced Safety Tec package.

Only when you reach the Limited are significant additional driver assists offered in an options package.

Against the competition, the same money, roughly, will get you the sensational Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade three-row SUVs with less space and a premium-car fit and finish. Against other SUVs, the Honda Odyssey is well-thought-out and so is the Toyota Sienna, which is the only minivan to offer all-wheel-drive. The Kia Sedona, less flashy, has rock-solid build quality and reliability on its side. Consumer Reports rates recent Sedonas at 3, 4 or 5 of 5, while the Pacifica is rated at 1 or 2 out of 5.

The Chrysler Pacifica has been out since the 2017 model year. It gets a significant refresh for the 2021 model year with all-wheel-drive offered on the gas-engine Pacifica only (Chrysler last had an AWD minivan in 2004). Chrysler could have redirected the PHEV’s electric power to the rear wheels for all-wheel-drive (as Toyota has done to create AWD on a front-drive car), but chose not to. There’s a new, version 5, of UConnect Drive by Android software. And there’ll be an additional trim line at the top end, called Pinnacle. To keep up with the competition, the 2021 Pacifica will make standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning/lane-keeping assistance.

Searching for Mana: Where to see the real Hawaii

Standing in the hot sand at the tip of Ka‘ena Point, La‘akea Perry, master teacher at Kei Kai o Kahiki, an all-male hula school, begins to chant, his voice trembling in a lilting vibrato. The words of the oli impart a greeting, one that conveys both a deep love for O‘ahu’s west side and an inherent responsibility to the land.

When the oli ends, the hula begins. La‘akea kneels and begins to beat the ipu heke, a golden double gourd instrument, as his student, Ka‘ena — who shares the name of the point on which he dances — adopts a stance reminiscent of an ancient warrior. La‘akea’s voice and his rhythmic drumming rise above the rush of the Pacific. This time he chants a mele about Hi‘iaka, favorite sister of the fire goddess Pele, who walked to Ka‘ena Point to visit her ancestral divinity. During the journey she chanted an oli of her own, describing the intense effects of the sun’s heat on her body and the landscape — a heat not unlike the one that we encountered during our hike that morning.

The word mana in native Hawaiian translates as life energy or spiritual power. On O‘ahu’s untrodden west coast — a 20-mile stretch of shoreline from the Ko Olina Resort to Ka‘ena Point — mana takes shape in the volcanic Wai‘anae Mountains and the vast cerulean Pacific, in tales of ancient ali‘i and in the passion and perseverance of a new generation of cultural practitioners. Rich in oral tradition, the leeward side, with its slower pace and sunnier skies, feels a universe away from the cluttered development and homogenized high rises of Honolulu. It may also have the most potent mana on the island. I’ve come to hear its stories.

A 10-hour flight followed by a 25-minute drive toward Kapolei delivers me to the airy Four Seasons at Ko Olina, where, in typical Hawaiian fashion, a cool drink and an equally cool towel relieve the weariness of travel. My room overlooks a wide, emerald-blue lagoon and I’m tempted to plant my jet-lagged self on the balcony for the remainder of the afternoon, but I’m on a mission. Instead, I head back out to explore the side of O‘ahu that most visitors rarely see.

Driving west on Farrington Highway I pass the low-slung, wooden houses that make up the working class neighborhoods of Nanakuli, Ma‘ili, Wai‘anae, and Makaha, home to the largest percentage native Hawaiians in the archipelago. Here, businesses lining the busy road — Aloha Gas, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, Mike’s Bakery, BK Superette — cater to locals. Aside from nearby Ko Olina, the polished tourist infrastructure that exists elsewhere in the Hawaiian Islands isn’t part of O‘ahu’s west side story.

But no one seems to miss it. On a sunny Sunday afternoon families fill the oceanfront parks that dot the entire length of Farrington. At Ma‘ili Beach, smoke wafts skyward from a barbecue tended by a man whose large, tanned belly spills over the waistband of his red swim trunks. Diapered toddlers run squealing across the grass chased by older siblings while grandparents sit and talk story — the Hawaiian term for shooting the breeze — in lawn chairs placed beneath pop-up canopies.

Further west, the highway narrows and as I approach Keawaula Beach, one of O‘ahu’s most spectacular, harbingers of the region’s poverty mar the natural beauty — husks of abandoned cars sit along the road while tarps strung between palms and sea grape trees shelter some of the island’s homeless.

On the drive back to Ko Olina, a different scene captures my attention. It takes a moment for my brain to register that the motley band of leathery men standing on the rocky bluff are roasting a pig over a wood fire, but when it does I decide to stop. I pull my embarrassing rented behemoth of an SUV into the gravel parking area and a wave of apprehension washes over me as I walk toward the spit — “Look, a random haole girl with a camera,” I imagine them thinking.

A few of the men watch my approach and eye me with more curiosity than derision as I gesture toward the fire with my camera. “That’s a beautiful pig,” I say. “Do you guys mind if I take some pictures?”

The man at the spit grins and nods. He steps behind the pig and poses for the camera, still smiling and flashing me a shaka, the hand symbol most people would recognize as the one that means “hang loose.”

As I snap the shutter, another guy approaches and shakes my hand, introducing himself as Richard. “This is my pig,” he says. “I have a farm up there,” he waves behind us at the mountains. “These are my guys. I’m doing the pig to say mahalo for their hard work.”

They ask me where I’m from and seem surprised when I tell them I just arrived from New York. “What the heck are you doing in Wai‘anae?” they ask.

“I guess I came to see you guys,” I say. “I wanted to see the real O‘ahu.” Before I know it someone has pressed a beer into my hand. Richard has a knife and a pair of tongs and begins to cut through the pig’s crackling, brown skin, placing thick slices of roast pork onto a paper plate and handing it to me. It’s smoky and delicious. I’m given a piece of tender white fish drizzled with soy sauce that Richard’s nephew pulled from the ocean a short time earlier — a nephew, Richard says, who can show me some great places to snorkel.

I thank them again and again for the feast and walk over to my car. I’m just getting in when I hear Richard shout something and I turn back to hear what he’s saying.

“Remember that this is Wai‘anae!” He calls. “Put that in your story! This is the true aloha spirit!”

Still on east coast time, I wake early the next morning to a deep rose-gold sunrise and head out for a run around the Ko Olina lagoons, which were built to replicate O‘ahu’s ancestral fishponds. One of those ancient ponds, known as the “Looking Glass,” can be found just next door to the Four Seasons at the Lanikuhonua Cultural Institute. Later that morning, I watch as Auntie Nettie Tiffany, the kahu — spiritual custodian — of Lanikuhonua, steps gingerly into the clear, turquoise waters, a clutch of verdant ti leaves in one hand. Bowing her head, her lips form a silent blessing as she bends toward the gently lapping surf to fill a wooden bowl.

She gestures for me to come to her, squeezing my wrists with her hands and brushing my forearms with water from the bowl. Pressing her forehead against mine, Auntie Nettie welcomes me to O‘ahu, blessing my journey and instilling me with west side mana. Afterwards, at her prompting, I wade into the warm Pacific to seal the exchange.

As a descendent of a family that once served King Kamehameha the Great, Auntie Nettie inherited her role as kahu from her mother, who taught her the ancestral traditions. “Ko Olina is a homestead land,” says Auntie, when I ask her to tell me Lanikuhonua’s story. “This is a very special place. It was a retreat area for the royals. They came for the water. They came to bathe in these sacred ponds.”

These days, Lanikuhonua strives to sustain and celebrate native Hawaiian culture through educational programs and annual festivals. In keeping with that mission, the institute provides space for La‘akea and his hula students to train each week. Their dance style, called ‘ai ha‘a, is extremely strenuous, replicating the moves of an ancient form of martial arts. At Lanikuhonua, the hula brothers train as warriors, using only what the ancestors had available to them — the rocks, the sand, the coconut palms, the ocean — as they memorize ritual dances and the stories those dances tell.

It was on my last west side morning that I set out before sunrise to hike to Ka‘ena Point, La‘akea and Ka‘ena acting as guides. Ka‘ena started telling stories as soon as our feet hit the trail.

“There’s a town on the west side called Nanakuli and the people there were once thought to be deaf,” he began, “but they could hear perfectly well. They were just ashamed.”

He went on to explain that in Hawaiian tradition it has long been customary to offer food and drink to travelers, yet the inhospitable landscape of the island’s west coast, with its arid land and brackish waters, yielded barely enough to sustain the locals. When visitors passed through town, the Nanakuli natives stood mute, staring blankly at the newcomers and pretending not to hear, embarrassed that they had no refreshment to give. When the travelers returned home, they spoke of the strange people on the leeward side — people who appeared to neither hear nor speak — and the area became known as Nana (look) kuli (deaf).

“But I’ve also heard that Nanakuli means, ‘look at knee,’” says Ka‘ena. “They hung their heads and looked at their knees, ashamed because they had nothing to offer.”

Later, after the mele and hula and plenty more stories, we headed back. Along the way we stopped to zigzag down through rough volcanic boulders to where they met the ocean, forming deep tide pools perfect for a swim. Nearby, a large monk seal lounged on the porous black rocks that surrounded the pools. Scratching its green-gray girth with a kelp-tinged flipper, it tilted its smiling face toward the sun looking just like my dog when she basks in a warm patch on the driveway. I heard La‘akea shout and lifted my gaze to follow his finger to where he pointed at a pod of spinner dolphins frolicking across the cobalt surface.

The salty water made buoyancy effortless and as I floated in the aquamarine pool I thought about Queen Ka‘ahumanu bathing in the sacred ponds at Lanikuhonua, of Hi‘iaka and the red hot cliffs that framed her ancient journey, of the Nanakuli people who had to climb high into the Wai‘anae uplands to find fresh drinking water and had none to spare. I thought about Richard and his pig and his generosity. Of the families enjoying the unspoiled west side beaches. Of Auntie Nettie’s embrace. The people I’d met these past few days all had their heads up. The shame of Nanakuli’s past was no longer a part of their story.

Don’t go to Waianae, I’ve heard it said. Heeding such advice would be akin to playing deaf, oblivious to the mana that infuses every aspect of Oahu’s leeward coast.

When we returned to the trailhead, someone handed me a fresh bottle of water and I took a long drink. The sun had risen fully over the Wai‘anae Mountains and climbed high into the wide, blue sky, its heat baking the already parched dirt path — just as it has since west O‘ahu’s most ancient days.

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is almost a decade old, and yet it’s currently the best-selling midsize SUV on the market: 242,969 sold last year, 200,000-plus most for much of the past two decades. The current body design has been around since 2011, there are 13 trim lines (model variants), multiple drivetrains, and varying levels of driver assistance technology.

Both despite its age and because of it – when the factory builds the same car year after year, reliability tends to improve – the Grand Cherokee has good fit and finish, a nicely controlled ride, a very nice interior on most trims, comfortable seats, and a solid infotainment system. Other than standard blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, driver-assist features are optional. The two rows of seats are both roomy, but no third-row seat is offered.

If one owner says their Grand Cherokee does fine off-road but the interior looks just okay and the center stack display is small, a second owner says it’s pretty luxe and the display is nice, and a third says the cockpit looks great and did you know it goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, that’s because, with those trim lines, there’s one that costs $33,000, a couple that run around $50,000-$60,000, and one that runs $88,000 with a 707-hp engine. The UConnect 4 infotainment system on my car was quite easy to use. But note that not all Grand Cherokees get UConnect 4 and 8-inch center stack screens. For years, Chrysler-Dodge-Ram products have had very good navigation and infotainment. It doesn’t hurt that when you press the NAV button, the screen asks you, “Where to?” The only people who don’t get that are grade-school teachers looking for a verb and a complete sentence.

This was the first Harman Kardon premium audio system I’ve driven that wasn’t breathtaking. It had 19 speakers and the issue – to me – was the woofer in the driver’s kick panel area. It was so heavily boosted that with the volume up and listening to my workout playlist (you know: the songs you’re too embarrassed to share), the sound pressure made my pant legs flap. So much so it felt like a Rockford Fosgate system, a brand happy to be known for heavy – sorry, deep – bass. It was much improved by turning the bass setting below the midpoint.

Not Enough Driver Assists

The advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are not all state-of-the-art and too many are extra-cost. Nothing wrong with blind-spot detection (standard) or lane keep assist (included on some trim lines). The optional ParkSense backup system auto-stops the car if you get too close to a stopped object. That’s all good. Adaptive cruise control goes down to zero but you have to manually resume forward travel, and if you’re stopped more than three seconds, ACC disengages.

Forward collision warning, a technology that requires a low-cost front-facing camera, is optional. Of the 18 midsize, two-row SUVs on the market, the only non-Jeep product lacking FCW is the revived Chevrolet Blazer, which, despite its heritage, is not a hard-core off-roader. Automatic emergency braking for highway and for city situations are also optional, and pedestrian AEB is not offered.

My Grand Cherokee Summit 4X4 was rated at 14 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 17 mpg overall. I averaged 20 mpg in a week of primarily highway driving.
