Part Three: The Audition

Warnings: Some Language, , Fictional Kidnapping scenario, DND session what can you expect, Subtle flirting, Mentions of Drug Use, NSFW and Smut Content in later parts.

When Nancy returned home from her camping trip with Robin and Steve, she was greeted with her cousin Audra in the Wheeler’s living room. Nancy thought Audra was smart, caring and determined to succeed in creative writing. A writer herself, Nancy thought that her and Audra would get along just fine.

That was until she had found out about Audra hanging out with Hellfire club.

“You sure that is a good idea?” Nancy stated “I mean Hellfire isn’t exactly a high status club and their leader can be…”

“Eddie can be what?” Audra had asked.

“He can be a bit intimidating” Nancy couldn’t figure out anything else to say to her about  the leader of Hellfire, Audra would find out anyways.

“Intimidating?”

“You, will see Audra. Just something to think about”

Saturday Night: 7PM, Eddie’s Trailer

Audra tried her best to impress the leader of Hellfire. She knew her appearance could be intimidating to the group so she tried to wear more casual clothes. Her auburn hair was let down. She wore an Alice Cooper top, black tights and black boots. In her hands, a peperoni pizza, her silver moon chained glasses, her DND stuff, and a six pack of Dr. Pepper. She still isn’t sure what he meant by a “six pack”.

She looked at the rusty RV. She wasn’t one to judge one’s upbringings, especially when her parents could be shitty to her at times. She took a deep breath and knocked on his door. This followed with a loud sound of clattering on the other side followed by a few mumblings of “oh shit”.

Eddie swung the door open and looked at her up and down. To him, he sees a girl who probably stole her daddy’s Alice Cooper shirt and wants to join a group she really isn’t qualified to join. Eddie in turn has his hair messed up wearing a Metallica shirt. Audra also was wearing a sweet-smelling perfume, a different smell that reeked from him, which had more of a earthy, more prominent smell. His eyes were also slightly glossy from previous hours events.

“So princess you followed on your orders. See you borrowed your dad’s shirt as well nice touch.” He flashed a smile at the red head and stepped back to allow her in. He wanted to test her already, there was no way a girl like her would like rock.

“Well, it is kind of hard to not like the creator of shock rock, especially when my dad would take me to see him in Toronto. It would be a road trip for my dad and I.” She smiled at the memory of going with him and enjoying the concerts. “Before you ask my favorite song is Under My Wheels.”

Eddie had to think of his reaction. He wasn’t expecting her to say that, in fact he thought she would cower and leave him to his previous activities. “I would think that a preppy girl like yourself would like bands like Bowie.” Eddie chuckled and took the pizza’s out of her hands.

“He is ok, but I had to stick up my nose to some of the photos Aunt Karen had stuck on my wall. More of a Cooper, Metallica, Judas Priest, Kiss girl.”  She laughed at the thought of the bands on her walls.  Eddie had shook his head as he offered her a hand to let her in.

“I’m impressed princess, I just need to finish getting ready. Didn’t think you would actually show.” He grabbed onto her hand and pulled her up on the stairs.  “I know it is a steep stair, some people tend to trip on it.”

Once Audra had entered the Trailer, she had looked around the messy trailer for a spot to sit. She found the clumpy green couch and sat down looking around admiring the rock posters hung up on the wall. “I don’t stray away from a challenge if that is what your insinuating. Especially if it is Dungeons and Dragons.”

Eddie plopped the pizza on the cluttered kitchen counter as he went to the next room to get everything ready. This may be harder than he thought.

The dungeon master had leant towards the table, with a wide cocky grin on his face. His books and notes scattered in front of him on one end. The other, was Audra with her own notes and bright pink floral dice that her older sister got her.

“Ready to lose Princess?” Eddie had chuckled to himself as he took a slice of pizza from the box between them.

“It’s Thia Nova to you” Audra responded, and she glanced at her character sheet. She hopes that she had picked the right character to beat Eddie with.

“And who is Thia? I assume some elf I can assume” Eddie had rolled his eyes. Of course she had picked an elf. Most chicks pick an elf. Maybe this was going to be predictable.

“Level 17 wood elf druid”

“No fuckin way” Eddie had shaken his head. “You can’t do that to me.”

“Yes I can, this character is my baby, she is my first character and I developed her. I just entered level 17 with my group. Just had attained the spell shape change with a criminal past, faking her death, she is going to be hard to beat.”

Eddie was not prepared for this. He was expecting a level 1 or 6 maybe, not this very powerful character. Guess he will have to make some improvisation. He tried to play it cool as he didn’t want to make her know that she had an advantage.  He cleared his throat to set the scene.

He cleared his throat, “Can I see your character sheet for a second, I want to see what I am working with.” Eddie brought a piece of paper with a pen, prepared to save his session, no matter what.

“We are going to begin in a small tavern, it is an old wooden shack with the thick smell of pine entering the interior from the creaked open window. There is hardly anyone here just you, Thia Nova an adventurer, a male Drow and a Tiefling in the bar. The two glance your way, intrigued by you being an druid of course. “Eddie quickly coughed. “What will Thia Nova do?”

Audra had snickered. “I would come up to the two with uncertainty as I would be unsure who there were. Are they friends or foes?  Will they try to attack upon first glance? It has happened to Thia before so she can’t be too hard to be too safe.”

“Roll an investigation throw” Eddie mumbled under his breath. His hands watched Audra’s hand place the 20-sided dice on her hands as she had shook her hands. She had looked at her page after she let her dice go.

“15 plus 2 is 17” Audra had announced.

“The two had brought out their daggers out from their boots. However, once they had checked you out they stopped the planned attack.  They knew they would be outmatched, but it would be better to be allies with you then enemies. The two were only going to take your cash anyways. The Drow is the first one to speak as he looks at you with his purple tinted eyes and offers to buy you a drink. What will the little wood elf do? Take a drink from a stranger or will she refuse?”

“I am feeling lucky” Audra stated” I will take my drink”

“Survival check princess” Eddie had snickered as he had shaken his head. Was she really going to fall for each trap placed in front of her? He watched Audra roll the dice again with a concerned look on her face.

“I got a natural one.” Audra’s voice sounded defeated “How much damage?”

Eddie held the dice in his hand “Shouldn’t be taking candy from strangers no matter how good looking you are.” He released his hand from the dice “6 damage princess.” He watched as Audra took 6 hp from her character. It only fueled his ego that this will be easier than he thought.  “Sure, you had noticed that he had put their weapons away, but perhaps it was all a ruse to trick you into a simpler trap”. He held a wide shit eating grin as he leant over the table.

He couldn’t help but notice the frustration on her face. An emotion he is all too familiar with on. Audra’s brows furrowed together as she didn’t believe that she fell into Eddie’s trap. Her dark honey brown were fueled with both motivation to take him down but also with a flash of surprise. Eddie found himself staring at her for a moment too long. He just thought her reactions were mesmerizing. Her eyes met his as she cleared her throat as she slipped her silver glasses on. Eddie had quickly looked away from her as he continued the session.

“Princess, you may have lost 6 hp points but you also have temporarily lost your consciousness. The Drow and Tiefling snicker to each other as the larger one, the Tiefling carries you over your shoulders” Eddie stated, and his grin turned into a subtle smile curl around his dimples.

“What the fuck, I thought it was just poison.” Audra groaned and let out a soft moan in defeat.

“Poisons can cause some people to lose consciousness too princess. Don’t worry, the two fine gentle creatures have the cure….. somewhere.” Eddie snickered. God, he loved teasing her.

 “So Thia would wake up with some rope wrapped around her wrists and legs as her two captors make dinner for the three of them around a camp fire as the smell of pine is stronger than the inside of tavern as she is outside in her captors camp.

Eddie chuckled. “What are you going to do now princess?”

“First my name is Audra Wheeler, my character is Thia Nova and I am going to get the fuck out of this situation.” Eddie seriously doubts that she can get out of this. However, he felt like a major dick not asking for red heads name. The name Audra did seem to roll off the tongue quite nicely.

Audra hated to admit it, but she had felt quite stuck. She tried to get herself out of the situation, she was unable to use any spells due to her being tied up. She tried to start the two to fight against each other so she could run off but the two seemed quite close with each other.

Audra however did find out that they were going to try to bring her to a demon as a sacrifice for immortality. She thought it was a very basic plot, but she had to figure out how to get out of the camp before Eddie decided to move on. She clearly underestimated him and knew she would be defeated if she faced Eddie in any type of DND combat.

He was just too clever.

She realised there was one last thing that she could do. She just didn’t know how he would react. Eddie may be a flatterer or not but it was worth a shot.

“What will the wood elf do now Audra?” He couldn’t get used to get the name off his tongue. Usually, he would only talk to guys with masculine names. But he considered Audra as a fantasy-based name as it means “noble strength”. He did have to give it to her, she was strong and determined.

“Thia will make eye contact with the Drow as she notices the Tiefling walk away for take a leak. She would smile at him and make little sudden eye movements as she looked up and down the Drows physique. “Don’t see why you would need immortality” She would say to him.” She stated plainly.

Eddie cleared his throat. “The Drow will look at you confused; a bit puzzled “Why not? I would be able to live forever not worried about dying of illness or old age.”

“I mean sure, but it wont exactly protect you from violence, your foes will find out your weakness and will use it against you. It would only mean your death would be more painful and you would loose everyone you live while you live forever. Including your wife.”

“I mean, what is the point? Everyone dies” Eddie shrugged. He knew what Audra was trying to do but he wanted to make it as difficult as possible for her to overcome the hurdle.

“I know, but wouldn’t you rather have one deep meaningful relationship rather than a few meaningless relationships? Wouldn’t you rather have a long, good life with your one partner, your true love, I assume that you have a wife.”

“The Drow tilts his head “If you are stating if I have a wife or mate, I do not have one. What would the point be for me to have one? No one would want me.” Eddie would mimic the movements as he would peer in interest in what Audra was going to do next.

“I don’t either, my last partner who I faked my death for just left me for some old lady’s money. So it’s just me chilling in the woods with my animals” Audra tried to emphasise a sense of sadness in her voice which Eddie had caught onto.

“Roll a persuasion check sweetheart.” Eddie had stated plainly. She is adding a complication onto his original plan. But he should anticipate this will go through quickly.

He should have realised that he made a mistake being too confident. Of course she had to be clever. His eyes had narrowed when Audra had announced that she had gotten a dirty 20.

Shit. Now what?

Eddie had to make something on the spot right here. He thought it was going to be a clean execution. Sacrifice Thia to the demon, reject Audra to the club and do whatever he was doing earlier.  He cleared his throat trying to hide his nervousness.

“” Really? An elf like you don’t have anyone to play around with. I am surprised”, The Drow glances at you up and down. “Flattery works on me, I’ll let you out Thia.” He releases her quickly and ushers her into the bushes, following her” He gave Audra a misleading grin, hoping she was going to take the bait. Did she seriously think that Eddie was just going to let her out of the session?

Audra thought this was the turning point, there was no way that he was going to use is NPC to lead her down a darker path, right?

Wrong.

Turns out that Eddie’s Drow character was going to just leave the Tiefling regardless of if they went to the Demon or not. It was a deal made amongst friends; Eddie had described it. However, greed on the Drow’s part got the better of him as he still craved power and greed and wanted to be the only one with it.

The Drow was going to send her to the Demon to be sacrificed, however he had spotted some wanted posters of the wood elf in a tavern that Thia wasn’t too keen of entering. The Drow read further details on how a certain Vampire lord was interested in the return of his “princess.”

Audra didn’t think he would use it, and he was only given those notes so quickly, 2 minutes of glancing, it was intense, but she was shocked he picked up that part of her backstory. Now, Eddie had the Drow take her to her ex-boyfriend’s house, with hopes that money will be provided. The ex-boyfriend and her captor were fully armed, waiting for her reaction.

Eddie had watched her bite her lip out of nervousness.

“Princess is stuck?” He chuckled nervously.

“Nah, I don’t have any bonds on me, so I am just going to simply cast a easy spell.”

“Oh, what is that?”

“Shape Change” Audra’s words rolled off her tongue so smoothly. “Into a blue inferno dragon.”

“You can not be fuckin serious! You love making this a challenge for me” He had laughed softly. He was not mad; he was impressed and was welcoming a challenge from the new girl. “I’ll allow it, the Drow and vampire look at one another, drawing their swords at her. Roll initiative Princess.”

“You know you could back down Princess.” Eddie had suggested. “No harm in running away, maybe they would not try to get to you knowing of your appearance. However, maybe your character will go down as well.” He had a huge smile on his face, he was open, welcoming for her to admit that she was defeated.

She didn’t understand, she had 295 hp, and now she is down to her final 25. The Drow and Vampire were prepared dragon hunters apparently? Why? It didn’t make sense for her. Running would be a coward’s decision, as she is far from one.

“I am not fuckin stepping down.” Audra crossed her arms. “I am going to take you down.”

Eddie had thought it was so cute how the new girl was underestimating his ability. It was his game, and he knew how to end the game and have her right where he wants her.

“The Drow casts sleep on Audra” Eddie rolls the dice and chuckles “19. Thia, the dragon will clash against the castle ruins, asleep. I am going to end the session here”. He stands up confidently and chuckles.

“WHAT THE FUCK!? That isn’t fair Eddie!” Audra had raised her voice in fury. They spend the past couple of hours doing his session and now she was lead down a pointless conclusion to the session. Her brows crunched together in anger.

“Sure, it is, I am the Dungeon Master, and you were defeated in the session!” He chuckled. “However, you are a challenging player so I will give you that.” Eddie had thought back on her overall reactions. She did have the most adorable reactions when it came to playing. “Plus, I am rather amused by your expressions as you wiggled around in my traps during the session.”

“I wasn’t I was fight back!” Audra protested. Eddie walked to the other end of the table to meet her eye to eye. He put his hands through her hair to rough it up a bit.

“Sure, you were little bird, what is your shirt size? I will make you one tomorrow in the shop.” Eddie abruptly stated he noticed it was getting a bit late and he had a “job” in a hour to get to.

“So, I am in?” Audra’s brown eyes lit up. “I am a medium”

“Cool, cool, I will get it set up for you. But don’t tell the rest of Hellfire what happened today.”

“Why I lost. Thought you would brag about it.”

“Not that, just your character being kidnapped by the vampire gives me an idea princess. It would help out my future session.” He looked down quickly and blushed nervously. “That’s only if you want.”

“Nah, I am interested in tormenting the group, if you think you can make it challenge enough.”

“Audra, I just beat you, I think you can trust me I can make a challenge.” Eddie had laughed. Audra had mumbled a fair enough as she grabbed her belongings to head outside. Before she could head to the door. She was going to leave the pizza and pop there, she assumed he would like it.

“Hey Princess?”

“Yea?” Audra was waiting for one of his quick remarks.

“I was wrong about you, welcome to Hellfire” He stuck his hand out in front of her with a grin. He did feel bad about underestimating her and she did prove herself.

“Glad you could see my potential.” Audra chuckled as she shook his cold hand. He gripped his hand tighter and laughed. God, is she adorable.

Am going to start turning my Alexander Rossi T-Shirts/Hoodies from the last 3 years into a block pattern quilt (so some McLaren and Andretti ones). The plan is to complete this and place it in our RV for the race weekends that we venture to. I will still keep a couple of shirts/hoodies out for everyday wear as I have some duplicates (thanks friends!) but most of them will find a home in the quilt.

Would anyone be interested in progress pics posted on here? I haven't decided if I want to actually quilt the three layers or not yet, still thinking about that or just tie the squares. If I do use a pattern, it is highly likely to be my favorite road/street courses all laid out.

they went on a two month long vacation to Mexico, they rented a car and drove from city to city to see everything. they usually go on a trip like this once a year, i used to go with them but then i stopped because skipping school for that long was too much

it’s been two days now so time to spill some tea that’s not really tea but something that happened that was. both interesting and very sad. i met sam fender in toronto this weekend, and he is very very sweet. this was after he posted that mega long story about how they got fucked over and had to take an RV from to chicago to toronto (about a 7 hour drive) instead of a tour bus bc his management team wasn’t able to get him a bus. he not only looked exhausted, but told us (the 10ish fans who were in line at the time) that he was exhausted and that this was “the worst managed tour.” he even went on about the whole RV situation during the show - he tried to play it off as funny but also made it pretty clear that it was very upsetting and so tiring (not to mention he had a show in montreal at 2 pm the next day!). after the show we saw him again and u could just tell how seriously exhausted he was, but he was still so nice to all the fans and wasn’t just trying to rush out of there. idk artists deserve so much better and i’m just blown away by how kind and patient he was despite the circumstances and i hope things get better for him here

As I predicted yesterday, Alma is full of anticipation for her reunion with her lover, and it’s apparently making her philosophical about their journey together so far. After all, being in that RV for days on end, on the way to Toronto, there is nothing but time to reflect, to feel nervous and excited, and to take the measure of how far they have come in more than a decade of being in love and learning to nurture each other and themselves, as lovers must do.

As I have previously hypothesized, when these two inhabit the same physical space, the energy released by that combination of life forces will seek expression, because the two cannot contain the emotional  shock waves when they are newly together after a lengthy separation. My heart is glad for their happiness, and I know all of us who hold them dear are delighted for them as they write the next chapter of their story together.

Let’s see how much of that story they will share with us in the coming days.

Rewatching the Cockles zoom and Misha's almost constant false mastication (a sign of anxiety), I don't think that Misha can get Jensen to do whatever he wants anymore. Jensen was just not as enamored by or endeared to Misha as he has been. It could be the medium and that fact that they have rarely seen each other in over a year, but maybe that broke the cockles spell.

I do have the theory though that Misha picked up Jensen either in Los Angeles while Jensen was doing a costume fitting or in Colorado and they road-tripped to Toronto. Unless Jensen has been sending Misha nude pics, which is quite possible, then how else would Misha have known that Jensen is "hulking" because you couldn't really tell from the zoom imo. So my thinking is that Misha knows from shirtless dirty pics or from when they drove cross country to Canada. Or both. I mean there is a Canadian-American border access point through new york, which is where Darius lives. New York also borders new england, which is where Misha posted a video of him at his brothers collecting sap from maple trees. And it all lines up with when Jensen started quarantining in toronto in early April.

So I think Jensen and Misha are still very close and still fucking, but I don't think they have what they had in Vancouver, which is understandable. I think it is a cooling off where they're still good friends but they aren't AS close or exclusive as they were. Misha lost a little bit of his sway over Jensen, and Misha is still getting used to this new chilled dynamic, thus the anxious false chewing we saw in the zoom.

And what happened to Misha moving to Austin like he said in DC 2019? I guess it was just a joke or they broke up and decided it was best that he and his family not make the move.

Deja Va: 2011 NDA Winner Rick Valicenti Recalls Two Iconic Poster Designs

Rick Valicenti is a legendary graphic designer, whose career spans the transition from analog to digital design production. Rick spoke with Cooper Hewitt curator Ellen Lupton about his design process over Zoom on October 23, 2020. Edited for clarity and length.

Ellen Lupton:  Rick, where are you?

Rick Valicenti:  I am in a garage in Toronto. This is the second day of a fourteen-day quarantine as we prepare to visit my mother-in-law, who is ninety-three years old and in assisted living. We are quarantined in a studio apartment above our friend’s garage.

I created this poster at the start of the 1990 Gulf War war. The poster was for a lecture at the Alberta College of Art, sponsored by Gilbert Paper. When asked to make a lecture poster, I thought “How do I ignore that we just started a war?” My own narrow version of history was the Vietnam war. In college, my draft card number was ninety-eight in a year they called number ninety-three or ninety-five. I wondered, “Man, did I dodge that? Should I have participated in that?” You carry those conflicted emotions if you missed the draft by good luck in the lottery, not bone spurs. The theme of my poster is deja vu, baby! Here we go again! There is a reference to world peace in the typesetting along the bottom.

EL:  How was the image was created?

RV:  The image is a photograph created by myself, photographer Corinne Pfister, and her assistant, Michael Pappas. The three of us were just uncorked. We found a model of a World War II bomber, we found a globe, we got some dry ice, we hit some water on it, and we got ourselves fog. Turn on the colored gel and we are done! Shoot a four-by-five color transparency, and it is over. Lay some type down and you got a poster.

Picture the great travel posters by A. M. Cassandre and E. McKnight Kauffer. Their illustrations teetered right on the edge of modernism. You can feel Herbert Bayer in the Bauhaus colliding with these illustrators. They got modernism and geometry but they could not shed themselves. So, they brought this other flare, this illustrative painterly flare. How could I do that? I am not one of those guys. Can Paul McCartney sing Little Richard? No, not really! But he did his version and that is cool. Scream your heart out, man. So, this poster was me doing that—creating a painterly illustration with a camera.

It never mattered to me whether an idea was rendered illustratively or photographically. My ineptitude at illustration allowed me to develop another talent, which is working behind the camera as a director. You do not have to be the guy who clicks the shutter or the person who fills the airbrush. This is the directorial mode of photography. How can we use photography to play in a different realm? Advertising has learned how to do that. How does graphic design do that? We saw Herbert Matter, László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, and Nathan Lerner do that. They all used the tools of the moment. I am inclined to use tools of aptitude, which means if you do not have much of an aptitude for it, but you sure like it, try it! 

EL:  Tell me about your poster for the opera Tannhäuser.

RV:  It’s 1988, and I’m on my own as a designer. I’m doing a poster for Chicago’s Lyric Opera, a there’s no budget. Peter Sellers is directing Tannhäuser. I meet with Peter and he is enamored with a picture of Pentecostal evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, crying on TV after he was caught visiting a prostitute in a place with striped awnings.

That photograph is black and white. Swaggart is on TV, crying. Sellers says, “This is my character.” So, I say, “Would I be able to videotape the baritone or the lead tenor and photograph the monitor?” He says, “Sure!” So, that is what we did. I blew up the image of the singer’s face. Underneath, I stretch the photo of the Bible to fill the space. Wow, you can stretch a picture! Now, what can I do with the type? I specify some Gothic type from Ryder Type Gallery. I had them stretch the type to fit the space. But, I say, leave a space for the “S” because a three-letter word that begins with an illuminated letter is sex. And then I add a couple of red dots for the umlaut.

I was as close to the director’s subject matter, his subject matter, as I could be by reenacting it and then using the poster as a document of his point of view. This design was not an affectation. It was pulling the cords and playing those chords that Peter was working with, but doing it through the medium of graphic design. That is when I really could feel a tingle inside, and that is what I wanted to go for in the future. If I do not hit that tingle, then the design is not reverberating strong enough. It does not have everything in play. Something is out of tune. That was a very seminal piece for me.

EL:  You were talking about stretching the photograph. Did you stretch the type, too?

RV:  We were right at that transition from analog to digital. I was still dependent on the typesetters. Their equipment allowed them to set your type and then fill the space that you defined. I could say, “I have X amount of inches leftover in height and width. Please take this spec and make it fit.” Today, we do that falling out of bed, but back then, you had to explain what you wanted with tracing paper and a red pencil. I would draw the shape I needed to fill, and pencil in the type.

EL:  The stretched type is distorted: the horizontals are thicker than the verticals. Was that effect considered ugly at the time?

RV:  Oh, yes, those people. Even today, there are those people. You are one of them, I think. I go there, too. There are moments for respecting the beauty of the type designer’s intent, absolutely. But sometimes there is a silly putty moment. It is like filling a pizza pan with pizza dough. You have to work it into the corners.
