A Comprehensive Guide to Buying Used Laptops in Canada: Tips, Pros, and Cons
In today's fast-paced digital world, having a reliable laptop is essential for both personal and professional endeavors. However, buying a brand new laptop can often come with a hefty price tag. This is where considering used laptops becomes an attractive option, especially in a country like Canada where the demand for affordable tech solutions is high. In this guide, we'll delve into the world of used laptops in Canada, exploring the benefits, potential drawbacks, and essential tips for making a smart purchase decision.
Why Choose Used Laptops in Canada?
Canada, known for its tech-savvy population, witnesses a consistent demand for high-quality laptops. Opting for a used laptop in Canada presents several advantages:
Cost-Effectiveness: The primary allure of buying a used laptop is the significant cost savings compared to purchasing a brand new one. This is particularly advantageous for students, freelancers, and budget-conscious individuals.
Variety and Availability: The Canadian market for used laptops offers a wide array of options from various brands, specifications, and models. This diversity allows buyers to find a laptop that suits their specific needs.
Environmental Impact: Opting for a used laptop contributes to sustainable consumption by extending the lifecycle of electronics, reducing e-waste, and minimizing the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing new devices.
Factors to Consider When Buying Used Laptops
While purchasing a used laptop can be a smart choice, it's crucial to consider several factors to ensure a satisfactory investment:
Reliable Seller or Platform: Choose reputable sellers or platforms known for their quality assurance and customer service. Platforms like certified refurbished outlets or trusted online marketplaces can offer peace of mind through warranties and return policies.
Inspecting the Laptop: Thoroughly examine the laptop for physical damages, battery health, keyboard functionality, screen condition, and overall performance. Check for any signs of wear and tear.
Specifications and Compatibility: Ensure that the laptop's specifications meet your requirements, whether it's for gaming, professional tasks, multimedia, or general use. Verify compatibility with necessary software and peripherals.
Warranty and Return Policy: A warranty or return policy adds an extra layer of security to your purchase. It's advisable to opt for laptops with warranties, allowing for repairs or replacements if issues arise post-purchase.
Potential Drawbacks of Buying Used Laptops
While the advantages are evident, there are potential downsides to consider when purchasing a used laptop:
Limited Warranty: Unlike new laptops that come with manufacturer warranties, used laptops might have limited or no warranty coverage, leaving buyers susceptible to unexpected repairs.
Reduced Lifespan: Used laptops might have experienced wear and tear, potentially leading to a shorter lifespan compared to a brand new device.
Outdated Technology: Older models might lack the latest technology advancements, impacting performance and compatibility with newer software or applications.
Conclusion
Buying a used laptop in Canada can be a cost-effective and environmentally conscious decision. By considering reputable sellers, thoroughly inspecting the device, and ensuring compatibility with your needs, you can make a smart investment. While there are potential drawbacks, the advantages often outweigh them, providing an opportunity to own a quality laptop without breaking the bank. So, whether you're a student, a professional, or someone seeking a budget-friendly tech solution, exploring the world of used laptops in Canada could be the key to finding the perfect device for your needs.

the reward
ceo!price x reader / ~2.5k words
This can be considered the first half of part 4 of Business or Pleasure? my lil ceo!price x reader side project. Please enjoy! đ€
Parts 1, 2, and 3
CW: hinted possessiveness, power imbalance, alcohol
The reward was never a choice. Cute, in hindsight, how you thought it was and politely declined to exit the car.Â
Mr. Price squashed your resolve with one look. Both of his eyebrows raised in an expression of almost tired disbelief, mouth a firm line, and a disapproving sound pushing through it. "Hmm. You sure? Store's open just for us, y'really going to make them stay on longer?"
Sufficiently guilt-tripped, you concede.
You expect the pair of sales associates to be miffed, all tight smiles and wringing hands, for working past posted hours. They are not. Quite the opposite. It makes you wonder the true reach of the man beside you.Â
John ushers you past the display of tote bags in the front of the store.Â
You try to protest. "But they're the most useful type here. The others are impractical."
You try to reason. "I can use it for work. For travel. See, my laptop will fit."
You want something closer to the reliable carry-all you currently own. He clicks his tongue as if you are an unruly pet, affectionately scolding. "You're not walking out of here 'til you pick something impractical. Think of it as an indulgence."
You are left to reluctantly marvel at the rows of clutches and handbags. They sit under warm, glowing lights designed to underscore the soft luster of their leather. The kind of brand to hide the price tags, you silently make estimates as you peruse. Just one could pay two month's rent.
A sales associate sidles up when you linger too long near a pinkish-gray, compact handbag. Her voice is low and bubbly, explaining the history of the silhouette and model, the leather and detailing. She shows the optional shoulder strap, threads it over your side, and insists you look in the mirror. Feels funny using a full-body mirror for an accessory, but it does make you like it more. A nicer outfit and you could pass for a real customer.
You meet John's gaze in the reflection. Comfortably settled in one of the shop's armchairs, he smiles languorously and nods.
Before you know it, John offers a shiny metal card to the associate, and you walk out of the store with a four-digit handbag.Â
In the car, it's as if nothing happened. John returns to his phone and padfolio, all business, and you sit slightly dumbfounded cradling a shopping bag. Whiplash does not even begin to cover the feeling.
He likes you, has to. Men, no matter how wealthy, do not spend this amount of money on people they do not care for. It is not your experience, at least. The gift is troubling, though. What precisely does it mean? What did drinks mean? What does his requisitioning you from Kyle mean? You've seen this show before, and it never ends well.
When the car pulls onto your street, it is fuel on the fire. Of course, John has access to employee information; you try not to dwell on the fact he shouldn't use it; there are policies against that. Clearly, he is not one for rules.
When Alex opens your door, John is on the phone, looking out his window. You make a split-second decision. You gather your things, murmur a goodbye, and then climb out of the car. Locking eyes with the bodyguard, you take advantage of his friendliness and mirror his warm energy. It works. Distracted, he does not notice the shopping bag left at the foot of your seat.
But John does. He calls your name as you attempt to distance yourself from the car, stopping you in your tracks.
"Forgetting something?"
Flustered and foiled, you retrieve the shopping bag. He smiles amusedly from his seat.
"Email me the notes. See you Monday, love."
~~
"You're hiding something."Â
"Jordan, please. I've barely touched my coffee."
"There's got to be more to it," Jordan whispers excitedly over the edge of your desk, ignoring your withering look.Â
You do not lift your gaze from the packed, colorful calendar on the screen. "Like I told you over text and FaceTime, that's it. Mr. Price only needed me for notes for a partner meeting. He was impressed by the summary I wrote up for Kyle about Project Intercontinental."
As if summoned, a message pops up on screen.Â
kgarrick - online
> Need to speak with you about meeting the technology directors.
What meeting? He's already met with them this quarter. Nevertheless, you stand and smooth your skirt. "Boss man needs me, talk later?"
The other woman huffs. "Yeah, yeah. Talk later."
You slip into Kyle's office and shut the door. "What's this about the tech directors?"
Kyle smiles, but it does not quite reach his eyes. He gestures to the padded lounge chair across his desk. "Please."
Pins and needles. This was not about the directors.Â
"OâŠkay." You sink into the chair, back straight as a board.Â
He takes a moment to lean forward on his desk, elbows resting on the surface, one hand rubbing the knuckles of the other. "I understand John took you to meet with Graves."
"Yes, I was under the impression you knew." The fear that Price possibly lied about that instantly surfaces.
"I knew, told him it was fine. I'm curious about your first impression.
So that's it. Kyle wants to know more about the new contractor. You relax a bit and recall the sportive, if not roguish American. "Oh. Well, he is certainly different. I am curious if his company's style will align with ours, given howâ"
Kyle raises a hand to stop you, and his smile is almost pained. "No, sorry, I meant John."
Your eyes widen a little in surprise. Crossing your legs, you force your fingers to lace around a knee. "I see. Um, he's...Assertive."
It prompts a snort of laughter, seemingly breaking Kyle's odd nervousness. "Sorry, go on."
Pursing your lips a moment, you tread carefully. "Perhaps 'confident' is the better term," It isn't. It is kinder. "Strategic and intelligent." Strategic in how he basically used you and intelligent but clueless with office equipment. You think to tag on 'generous', but rather not be forced to explain.
Kyle chuckles, and his grin slowly returns to an uncertain curve. "Did he talk to you much?"
Yes and no. Yet, what was the correct response? 'Yes, Kyle, and he admitted to using me as the adult equivalent of a ring of keys to a toddler or monkey to gauge Mr. Graves's attentiveness. Oh, and this was after he described my clothing in detail over the phone to an unknown party. Did I mention the five thousand pound gift back at my flat?' Complete honesty was out of the question.
"He did not ignore me. We had a polite conversation."
"Did he say anything about me? Ask?"
You smirk. "Only that you gave him your blessing."
The spot of levity is lost on him. Your smirk fades.
Kyle almost looks worried. "And heâŠHe didn'tâŠ"
Your face heats. What does he know? Does he know about drinks? The message? The handbag? The conversation teeters into minefield territory. You play dumb. Best to let him get out with it. "What?"Â
"He didn't ask you to move over to his desk full-time?"
Relief floods your worried nerves, quelling the fretful thing in your chest. You understand now. Kyle doesn't want to lose his assistant. Your smile nearly splits your face. "No, he did not."
The man slumps some and chuckles. "Excellent. Had me worried. I don't think either of us could refuse if he asked, y'know."
That is a discomforting piece of knowledge.
"I still would," You reassure, lean forward, and tap the surface of his desk. "Now. Was that all? I don't know about you, but I've got work to do."Â
He shakes his head. "No, but you tell me if he tries to snipe you, yeah?"Â
The earnestness throws you, despite how accustomed you've grown to it during your tenure. It makes keeping this thing with Price a secret all the more difficult.
"Of course. Now. Message me when you decide on lunch, dates for the Mexico trip, and what you'd like to give me for my fifth anniversary since I know you've already forgotten."
"Shit. That'sâ?"
"Next Monday."
"Pick out something nice."
And you will. Just not Moynat nice.
~~
The rest of Monday keeps you hellishly occupied. Your head's above water for the first time in the day, and it's nearly quitting time. Kyle's off at his last appointment, some check-in meeting on tax season preparations, when you power off your desktop. You slip on your coat, pack your bag, and discreetly slip off to the elevators. There's time to beat the evening rush.
The elevator arrives from a higher floor and for a moment, you briefly consider diving out of view. You come face-to-face with Alex and behind him, Mr. Price. Both of their faces shift for different reasons.
"Miss," Alex drawls.Â
You give the bodyguard a rigid smile, then glance at your employer.Â
"Going down?"
"I canâ"
Alex holds the elevator doors open when they try to close, his smile warm and clueless. "C'mon in."
Price speaks when the car starts to descend. "You're not using your new bag."
Your eyes flick to Alex's back then focus on the LED panel indicating the floor. It feels inappropriate to talk about it in front of the other man, despite his presence on the 'errand'.Â
"I can't."
"Something wrong with it?"
"Yes, it's too nice."
Price chuckles and Alex's shoulders shudder in a clear attempt to suppress a laugh.Â
"I fail to see how that's a problem."
"Mr. Price, while my compensation is fair," You continue carefully, still avoiding looking at him. "It is not within my budget to afford luxury brands. If I turn up to the office with that nice of a bag, all of a sudden, people would talk. And besides, it's my bag, and I decided it is not for work."
You don't miss how he ignores the first part of your answer. "What's it for, then?"
"Socializing."
Do not look at him. Oh, what you would do for the elevator to stop.
"Socializing," He repeats, elongating the word as if it's in a foreign language. "Dates?"
He has to be deliberately trying to get under your skin.
"Yes," A single word. A confirmation and a warning.Â
"Go on many of those?"Â
Even Alex tenses, back muscles tightening beneath his suit jacket. Your head finally snaps toward Price, who, irritatingly, wears a controlled smile.
"Yes," You answer again and push through the absurd embarrassment. "My fair share."
He hums. "Your anniversary with us is next Monday, yeah?"
The sudden change in topic does not bode well. "Yes, sir."Â
"You free Friday?"
The lie is out of your mouth before you can stop yourself. "I have a date this Friday." Whatever this baffling situation is between you, it needs to stop. Should've all the way back at the malfunctioning copier. He does not need to know your 'date' is celebratory drinks with Jordan. You just need him to drop it.Â
It's as if the elevator car turns into an icebox. The mirth bleeds from Price's gaze, but his smile remains. "And Saturday?"
There is a tacit warning in his tone. In the slight turn of Alex's head in your periphery. Your mouth dries, and you swallow hard.
"I'm free on Saturday."
The lights come back on in his eyes, and miraculously, the car reaches the lobby. "Wonderful to hear. Pick you up at eight."
Alex steps aside to let you out.Â
"Have a good evening, miss," the bodyguard says softly as you pass before hitting the number for your office's floor to head back upstairs.
You meet eyes with Price as the doors close, and a shiver runs down your spine. It's unsettling. You can't tell if it was good or bad.
~~
Thankfully, you do not run into Mr. Price the rest of the week. You take care not to. If Kyle suspects something from your excuses to sit out on meetings, avoiding any whiffs of the CEO, he says nothing. When you leave on Friday to meet Jordan, you take the stairs all the way down to the lobby and claim exercise. She wrinkles her nose at the idea of trekking a half hour away to a pub closer to yours, but after the first two rounds, she forgets her griping.Â
And after four rounds, you forget yourself. You slip up.
Giggling, you sip your gin and tonic, poking at the lime wedge. "The bartender reminds me of the place I went to with Johnâ"Â
The way Jordan's face lights up makes you try to backpedal, but it's too late.Â
Her voice slurs some, part alcohol and part explosive excitement. "Waitwaitwait. John? Like capital 'J' John? Not my John? What place? When? Whatdoyoumean?!"
Through no small amount of lovable torment, she coaxes the story out. It is heavily redacted despite your inebriation, but now she knows. And she is not known for her tight-lippedness.
"Swear on your mother, you won't breathe a word."
"I swear."
"'Cause I'll tell MacTavish you stealâ"
"I swear. Now. What are you going to wear for your date?"
Only then does it hit you: you know nothing about thisâŠ'date'. If it's anything like the other places you've accompanied him, it's somewhere beyond your wallet and comprehension.
Jordan might as well sit on your shoulder, the devil. "Message him. Ask. Bet it won't matter by the end of the evening."
"Shut it, I'm not gonna message him."
Yet, on the ride home in the taxi, you do. It takes a few tries, with the drunkenness making everything fuzzy and sluggish.
johnprice - invisible
Hi, what should i wear tomorrow?
It's late. You don't expect a reply. The phone nearly launches out of your hand when he swiftly messages back.
> Something nice. I liked the green dress.
The dress from the Christmas party. He remembered. Clearly, it made an impression, given his current fascination. Before you can respond, he messages again.
> Date go poorly?
> Might want to take this to text, love. Don't want to get chewed out for misuse of company resources.
He sends his personal number like it's nothing. Asks about your 'date' like it's nothing. Infuriatingly confusing man. Still, you save his contact information and switch platforms. You swear it's the gin moving your fingers, the liquid puppeteer.
Only texting because I wouldn't want to get you in trouble sir
And my date was wonderful
Were you possessed by a flirtatious spirit between the bar and cab?
> I wouldn't be the one getting into trouble.
Price is fishing for it. You oblige him.
What if I'm the trouble
It takes two, no, three minutes for him to reply. Worrying your lip, you think you've gone and royally fucked yourself now. Pushed the envelope too far, flew too close to the sun, all the turns of phrase. Then those three dots appear. You've really done it now.
> I know just what to do with you.Â

Inspired by a recent poll, could you tell us a bit more about the software you use for writing and the advantages with it?
Thanks so much!
Can I keep this short is the question...
So, for anyone who didnât see the post this is referring to, I mentioned on another post that the writing software I use is...
4TheWords for drafting (brainstorming, first draft, etc)
Scrivener for all subsequent stages (editing, formatting, etc)
ProWritingAid for a final look before I submit / post
Longer version (and, like, I could talk about this all day so feel free to ask follow ups but I will try to contain myself)
4TheWords is a fantasy RPG-ish writing game where the words you write defeat monsters, earn loot, complete quests, etc. I have been playing it for five years ish and the game-ification just works really well for my brain. Earning silly little prizes and moving the game plot along keeps me motivated to keep writing when otherwise I would be a useless slug so I do most of my early stage writing on there like drafting, brainstorming, journaling, etc. It is silly but I love it and it basically saved my writing life when I was in a huge slump so they have my undying devotion. The company is also the kind you feel very good about supporting and they are HUGELY queer friendly with a big yearly Pride event with many of the main in-game characters being queer and/or trans. (The closest the game has to main characters are a lesbian couple that just got married as part of the Valentine's Day event last month!)
It costs money but a) there is a 30 day free trial of you want to check it out and b) there is a community pool if you cannot afford the fee as well as frequent sales/deals. (If anyone wants to try it out, feel free to use my referral code when you sign up because then youâll get some extra crystals and I can send you a welcome present of some loot! If the image link above is annoying, dm me and I will give you it via text for copy and paste.)
Scrivener is very robust writing software that I use for fiction, non-fiction and scriptwriting. I only rarely use it for first drafts (bc I use 4TW for that) but I do almost all my editing / rewriting / formatting / publishing in it. I have been using it for probably about a decade and am still finding new tools and features I didnât realize it had. I absolutely swear by it. The learning curve can be steep but luckily itâs one of the most popular writing programs in the world so there are a TON of great tutorials out there. (My advice? Just watch a video of something like the top 5-10 features and then play around and look up stuff as you have questions instead of trying to do the whole long tutorial it comes with.)
Disclaimer that I only own the desktop version. There are mobile versions that are a separate purchase from the desktop version but I don't use them.
Biggest selling points of Scrivener to me are:
while many writing services have a monthly fee, Scrivener is purchased exactly once and you can use it for life on your laptop and desktop AND you can get 50% off that one time price with a NaNoWriMo winner code (this alone is enough to buy my loyalty for life)
itâs incredibly versatile for both plotting and publishing and works really for my writing process (which is, admittedly, chaotic and weird) and has near infinite customization. It's esp great for making story bibles, organizing research, and plotting out larger works with lots of cross references and chapters you need to rearrange
as a script writer, Scrivener only cost me a one time fee of $35 and includes all updates and bug fixes until the next major version (which happens like once a decade). FinalDraft is $250 and that only includes the current version (which changes about once a year) to do the same thing. Thatâs a no brainer to me.
ProWritingAid is editing software. Like Grammarly but MUCH more robust with a lot more reports you can run. Itâs not replacement for a human editor (AI editing can only do so much) but I like it as a second pair of eyes before I post or submit something because it does catch a lot of the basics and makes me feel a little better about sending something out. There is a limited free version and the full version can be pricey if you pay the monthly fee but I bided my time until the lifetime subscription went on sale for 50% off and paid once and now I have it to use for life.
There. That was almost short, right?

Pandemic Blues (Spring).
When Dad passed away, I knew it was a new era. No more of his presence meant things would change on the inside and out, for better or worse. He almost had hit the U.S. average of male life expectancy by a pinch (78.54 years to his 78.19) so heâs had about his moneyâs worth. God couldnât have cashed him out at a better time.
To start 2020, I took two weeks off from work for the first time in the six-plus years Iâve been with the company. Iâve met friends I havenât seen in ages. Iâve abandoned non-successful projects in the name of self-care. Iâve re-wrote my diet for the better now that Dad wasnât pumping me with free food âround the clock. Iâve also become the store champion in revenue for the year once again, and learned how not to get stress get the best of me. I had only one sunny day out of the twelve off in February which was extremely disappointing. As all you devils know, heading to New York City never leaves my mind. I promised myself that Iâd make a visit to both Modern Pinball and Sunshine Laundromat, visits Iâve been waiting three years for. I came close. I did visit the city in early March for a check-up and visited Central Park as I called up my Godmother Laura to make Easter plans, leaving only after a half-an-hour when it started to get dark. By then Iâd started to receive inklings of pending changes. The coronavirus was only in the back of my mind, and you normally donât think of these things unless it pertains to you. I dialed up my aunt Theresa and she told me that the city schools and offices were contemplating closing down. I brushed it off like it was nothing, untilâŠ
It was a weekend at work like any other. A regular Sunday. Then it started. A customer asked me for nine mid-range laptops for himself and his co-workers to work from home. I sold them all to him. Thatâs a $3,100+ ticket. Another older man came in looking for five printers and ten monitors for his business. I couldâve hit the jackpot if only we had enough but we didnât, but we piece-mealed whatever we could from other stores and that was another $1,500+. More customers and business owners came in to buy buy buy whatever they could to work at home with no limit and we now had a weekend clearance sale we never planned for. Every man and woman for themselves rushed in to save their jobs and tried grabbing whatever they can. When the weekend was over, they wiped us out of all our essential stock. Webcams, budget laptops, and monitors went clean off the shelves. We were fucking bewildered.
One outstanding memory I had of last yearâs outbreak was seeing someone eye-ing over all-in-ones. After twenty minutes of no one asking him for assistance, I finally got him. He already had as much time under his belt deciding which way to go: Windows or Mac? He had lots of questions for me, and took me on a world tour of my own department to see which of three units he wanted to take home with him. Fine by me, because being in the presence of his brown-eyed peanut-butter haired daughter was all that mattered. Imagine Jessica Chastain in her late twenties and neck-length hair wearing a green St. Patrickâs Day shirt with a beige clover on it and blue jeans. Somewhat conservative and reserved but she was nice 100% all throughout. Thatâs more I could say than most people on the island or in my life Iâve met. An hour later, her dad finally decided on a high-end unit. âWrap it upâ he said. âThank you for your time and purchaseâ I say, and itâd be the only time I would ever see her. Eventually, I noticed more customers coming in wearing masks. A different father-and-daughter pairing didnât get it right wearing theirs under their chins, a half-assed way to at least fend themselves from the poison going on. Later on, two young female best-friends asked me for a Nintendo Switch. When they saw I had the Animal Crossing version, they suddenly asked for two more. Done. Knock yourselves out.
Within one week our store changed operations on a near-daily basis. We shortened our hours, then limited our total number of occupants to appointments only. By mid-week our store was closed to the public and it was all phone-orders and curbside pick-ups. Salespeople became impromptu warehouse and back-end runners. We couldnât believe what we were experiencing. We were literally witnessing the slow gradual death of our traditional operating model. Corona- finally arrived and everyone was on edge not knowing what was coming next. Then we got the call from corporate: âall New York stores to be shut down indefinitely until further notice. Pack it up and go home. Expect a call from us in a few weeksâ.
This was unreal! Our positions were in limbo. It felt like we were let go yet still employed otherwise. Meaning: furlough. Weâd be fortunate enough to hold our titles and be kept on the payroll while we were mandated to stay home. Later as I learned, the âessentialsâ as deemed, still had to work on through as a necessity to others; pegged to deal with the public who had no foresight as to how serious it would be. Before heading home indefinitely, I walked next door to the market. Never had I seen meat and paper shortages. Bare shelves of canned goods, frozen vegetables, pasta, and rice like the world was ending. There was no timetable for lockdown or how itâd last. I was now in competition with everyone else to stay alive. Count my high cards that an long-term food shortage was not the case.

If only Dad wouldâve lived long enough to see this unfold. Heâd be forceful enough for me to stay home with him like some early exits from my location did. I can imagine that even if my bro- didnât yell at him to stay home, Dad would say âhey, fuck you!â and drive out to see his friends. He literally fell of heart failure, and if that didnât get him, would the -virus? Could he survive it with his expiring health and the spectre of death on impatient delay? Since Dad fed me almost daily, heâd feel very sad and broken if he couldnât bring food home for me. Heâs not here on this Earth anymore to do that, so it was time to change it up. The haunt of immuno-compromization had me thinking to cut the crap and go healthy.
245, 332, 417.
My ex- Yenny, the most cautious person in the world, sent me directions on how to make my own mask which I did out of old worn-out tees. Welcome to the new real dystopia. The first aesthetic of the pandemic was in the form of this makeshift cloth mask dampened with my own carbon-monoxide emanating the smell of damp stale cotton. Back to the neighborhood Chop Nâ Drop I go. I stockpiled on fruits, vegetables, broth, anti-oxidants, juices, dark chocolates, nuts, and seltzer water. The moment of spending money on real food was the moment I started making real meals; the mixture of Idaho and sweet potatoes, celery, carrots, and vegetable broth aerated a distinct spring of fumes forever tied to these months in isolation. A daily carousel of apricots, oranges, cauliflower, tomatoes, and green peppers were a wonderful much-needed addition I had to have from now on. Visits to Bullseye had plenty of food, albeit the shelves were disorganized and the essential workers were overwhelmed. Idolatry was only steps away and to stock up on whatever non-perishables I could find, then threw them on the belt where the young silent Spanish girl who didnât feel like being there was waiting for me at the register.
I noticed all around me that things were a littleâŠdifferent. Most of us were given things we never imagined. Youâd never think of being home for months to have the opportunity to catch up on a life they once had no time for. People finally caught up on cleaning, pursing through personal belongings, old photos and memorabilia, reading lists and vinyl records that piled up. Imagine all the things said about not having to travel to work, or staying home to work, or not working at all. They were right. No such thing as stress. No managers shoving daily quotas or finding faults down your throat. No awkward moments, lack of courtesy, rudeness, or interruptions. No immature adults turning into bus-ride children competing for your attention or older women stamping their feet when being reminded of how out of line they were. It was total bliss.
486, 548, 753, 819.Â
Most of us had all the time in the world to shit ourselves in our front-row seats for what we were seeing. Itâs all happening next door in New York City, fatally crowned the epicenter of the worst pandemic of our lifetimes. We were The Death Nation. The deaths came at such an expedient rate that literal dead bodies were lined up outside the cityâs funeral parlors. By then, restaurants closed. Businesses closed. Stadiums, theaters, arcades, bars closed. Schools and universities were canceled. Even Easter, the next social holiday in lineâŠclosed. The nationâs unemployment rate spiked high as 15% as people pounded on the doors on a broken system to have their unemployment benefits or loans in hand as soon as possible. No meta-game suffered distinctly than the music and venue industry. Artists, operators, and promoters had their livelihoods taken away from them in an instant; forced to make a living improvising on live-streaming. They just lost their selves overnight. Now, they held on tight for their own stability and sanity; hoping to reach for that brass ring while riding on a lagging carousel engulfed in flames.Â
Over at WUSB, the show still had to go on. Our general manager disallowed any further staff to enter the studios. As most planned to live-stream from their homes, I opted to send my shows in. For the entirety of spring (and summer) Iâd hand my shows in our engineerâs at-home automation for broadcast. Saturday 10:00PM Eastern Standard Time on the dot, no error. I had all the time in the world to post on Ω+, my portfolio VMFX, and get Our Lady Omega finally up to speed without worry of deadlines, distraction, or needless interruption. It was when I rifled through many auditions burning on the hard drive. Cleaners From Venusâ âThe Jangling Manâ couldnât have come at a better time, signifying a cancelled Easter intended to be spent with my Godmother now at home. I never heard it ever but it yet it sounded familiar before. The cassette fidelities and a certain â89-â90 recorded feeling that took me back to my Nintendo youth becomes a new forever memory. Shoegaze and post-punk cuts such as Ingâs âClosetâ, Millyâs âTalking Secretâ, Esâ âHidden Trackâ, and Miserableâs âLoverboyâ, to name a few, have indisputably defined the pandemic eraâs soul.
But enough of that for today. Down comes Mario, my five year-old nephew whoâs yearning to play. Dad / Pop is no longer here, so itâs me heâs looking forward to seeing every day to try and win me on Uno or Candy Land while ginger-superior Madelaine Petsch / Cherry Blossom or Hayley Orrantia were on the flat-screen. We had nights where heâd chose a deck from my collection and weâd make separate piles out of suits. Heâd play some good ones, too: the âJuniorâ of Hearts, the âMomâ of Diamonds, and the âDadâ of Spades he calls them. Aces were âsooper!â and the jokers had their own narrative: a clown on the unicycle was riding to 7-11 to get some Slurpees for us. (Once in a while, a horse-head or the word âMAVERICKâ in cowboy caps- for those wild ones.) What kind of an imagination is this? And he loved Monopoly, too. We played so much that it inspired another aesthetic forever tied to the pandemic. Solid oranges and sky blues against the CRTâs, and Monopoly symbols of trains and utilities helped create sets of icons for a series of graphics templates Iâve made.
800, 814, 1036.
Red bottles with blue and red labels of now-discontinued blue liquid soap. Blocks of green and white cleanser cubes cased in plastic. Bulbs of blue and purple diffusing liquid. Cucumber sanitizer. Theyâre all symbols of cleanliness. All the time in the world posting, sound-editing, and layouts prove exhaustive at times. Itâs 1AM Eastern Standard Time in New York City / Long Island and an open window allows the smoky cold chill of a 50°April breeze to vacate downstairs. Itâs an invitation to step outside and admire the clear moonless skies. No clouds, only the stars above. I sit in my backyard to hear near-total silence emanating from the expressway. The asphalt rushes were a bare minimum because no one had a reason to travel. The utmost quiet was enough for the nostalgia to vacate right in. The cold, clear, quiet spring Saturday and Sunday nights spent with my Plainview circle of friends. Weâd talk shit about everyone we knew, what our favorite Green Day, The Offspring, Collective Soul, or Nine Inch Nails songs were, and matching up with the alternative girls I never met before. The post-dinner April starlights spent shivering with Cath- off the busy Sunrise Highway admitting how much I missed her and how it felt when she succumbed to the heroin demon, the drives down random gas stations to save her ass, or the rare night rides from campus to take her home after my Wednesday radio stint. The temperatures also matched the experience of visiting Central Park for the very first time while an essential contact was in the back of my mind, her text asking how my day in New York City waited for me when I arrived home. It kills me that these are rare moments Iâll never have back. To this day that Iâm still paying emotional interest on them.
142, 103, 101.
Rinse, repeat. For two months there was no place to go. No work shifts, classes, ballgames, weekend traffic, or Sunday dinners demarcating the days of the week. Saturdays were Tuesdays. Sundays were Mondays. No one ever humanly experienced a blur of time where every day was literally the same. Then a phone call. âOperations are re-opening. Be here Sunday and ready to start packing.â What my manager shouldâve said to me: âbe ready to be crucifiedâ. I told myself itâs the last week of May. Three days to get back into it. The spoils of staying home from work once again with financial security and benefits intact will end. Slowly but surely things will pick up again. The floodgates will soon open and here come the entitled Karens, ugly kniving fishwives, dumbshit Tonyâs From Brooklyn, and whatever unkempt messes who somehow still manage to breathe will tug my shirt for attention or see me as a whipping boy for their insignificant grievances I never asked for.Â
If the quarantine made many lives a nerve-wracking unbearable hell for some people, then what happened next would be the breaking point: footage posted of Minneapolis police murdering George Floyd sent people into the streets in an outrage, and rightfully so. Short-Term Memory America didnât learn and repeated their mistakes once again. No surprise there. The unnecessary needless precursory murders of Breonna Taylor and Armaud Arbury led up to the stateâs latest nationwide collapse of unrest.
It took the latest event of racism and murder for everyone to finally come outside since the start of the pandemic and show what they were hiding for the longest time. Frustrated adult-male mouth-breathers acting out like total jerkoffs throwing their childish ignorance and building blocks in more reasonable mature peopleâs faces, and unattractive vanilla pig females turned into cartoon versions of themselves as they yapped multitudes of n-bombs and were damn proud of it. Cutting noses and spiting their own faces; doing whatever it takes at all costs to preserve their personal right and false constructs in treating people-of-color like garbage. Bulletin-board bruisers and ultimate keyboard warriors finally brought it out for all of the world to see. Others, however, had enough of their friends, family, co-workers, and fellow human beings being shot, beaten, or killed based on the color of their skin. They came to protest, picket, fight in the streets, and set it all in flames because enough was enoughâŠenough of a corrupt racist celebrity president whoâs done absolutely nothing except write off white supremacists and dismissed the coronavirus as a hoax. It all came down to this after living in an irrational anything-goes backwards presidency, all because the Fascist-in-chief cared for no one but himself, his family, and those who pledged their allegiance to him.
If the last four years provided us some out-of-this-world ridiculousness, what else wouldâve been possible? Weâve experienced a hell like no other. We genuinely lived in fear that we could reach the point of no return. No one had any idea what was in store for us or how bad it couldâve been; during an election year, nonetheless.Â
Where Iâm heading is another story. I drive home down Rt. 25 and there are clusters picketing on the side of the road. One supporting Black Lives Matter, one for Tr*mp 2020. Summerâs on her way and the new heat was here; the allegory of pent-up frustration and emotion which everyone was feeling exacerbated by the pandemic. The possibilities were spring-loaded in the back of my mind and made me on edge, not knowing what could happen.Â
All I, and us, could think about was when this would all end, and when we could go back to life as we knew it. We were holding out on all hope that something had to give. When will we be open for business again? When would be all go back to what it used to be, or what would âthe new normalâ be? Will we change course and advert a national crisis, or will be dig ourselves a totalitarian grave so deep we wonât crawl out of? Will we have reason, rationality, science, humanity, and common sense back again, or will we have hatred, nastiness, cruelty, and contempt kept in place for traditionâs sake and have it rammed down our throats until we die sick of it?
It was the three most surreal months of my life. True uncharted territory; no map, no compass. And Spring wasnât even over. Not just yet. As everything was unfolding and unraveling, something else was headed my way. A season that was anything but normal was going to end on an even more bizarre and curious note. Not in the form of more shutdowns, sickness, emptiness, or despair; but of someone who reached out to me.

How do you make and save money?
Itâs mostly about increasing your income, and then reducing how much of that income you actually need to spend. This is what I do. Not all of it is technically allowed because of my universityâs employment rules, but I havenât run into trouble yet. Itâs not always fun to live frugally, but it allows me to indulge in the things that matter to me.
Increasing income:
I receive a termly stipend as part of my scholarships, covering my rent and utilities and leaving me with a little money left over.
I work at least one shift at the student bar per week, and usually receive tips.
I do part-time paid internships during term-time, and full-time paid internships in most holidays.
I work for my university by taking shifts in the libraries, and working with admissions and outreach.
I offer myself for some compensated research trials and surveys at my uni.
I do online tutoring, mostly to foreign highschoolers whose parents are willing to pay a fortune for my universityâs name.
I work freelance in translation services and proofreading in my native languages. This pays by the word.
I offer basic beauty services (waxing, eyebrows, etc.), styling and tailoring/mending services to students at a reduced rate compared to local salons and tailors.
I sell PDF copies of my notes and lecture transcripts to students on my course, and very occasionally write essays for a higher fee.
I babysit/pet-sit/house-sit for my professors, neighbours, and other local families I know.
I receive occasional cash prizes for competitions.
I have some music and poetry published, and receive a little bit of money regularly as royalties.
I sell clothes etc. on behalf of people who are too old or lazy to use online secondhand sites, and take a portion of the cost.
I sell a few printables and some of my embroidery and other handicrafts on Etsy.
I take on any little âodd jobâ offered to me. Last week I was paid ÂŁ25 as an extra in a student film production.
I have a few investments, and I withdraw portions of the interest already generated if I feel I need to.
My parents send me a small amount of money every month (something like ÂŁ75) specifically for groceries.
Reducing outgoings:
All of my tuition is covered by my scholarships, plus a single airfare to and from home per year.
I get all my fish free from my neighbour, and I eat a lot of it.
I get all my milk free, in exchange for doing the eyebrows of the girl who runs the dairy near me.
I buy the rejected fruit and vegetables from the greengrocerâs at the end of the day for a discount.
I buy rice and beans in bulk from the international market a few miles from my house.
I cook everything from scratch at home. Most meals I make come out at less than a ÂŁ1 spend per portion, because I buy in bulk.
I walk everywhere, and I have a Railcard for when I need to use the train.
I pirate books and movies, or use my universityâs libraries. I never, ever pay for books.
I always shop in sales or usually secondhand, and Iâm really good at using discount codes.
I donât bother with fancy salons. I do most of my cosmetic work myself, or I go to independent aestheticians who work from their houses.
I get a friendsâ discount with the dry cleaning shop I use, because itâs run by the local monastery and I know most of the monks there.
I donât have any subscriptions or monthly payments to anything except magazines. My phone and laptop were bought outright for me as a part of my scholarship agreement, and I donât have a car or any streaming services.
I have a black and white television (the licensing charge for B&W in the UK is significantly lower than colour).
I use a cashback app whenever I buy anything online. Itâs only a small percentage, but it adds up over time.
I never buy alcohol. There are more than enough events with free drinks in a student city.
Saturday brunch was recently swapped to a homemade brunch, so now I no longer pay for any meals out at all.
Most of my cleaning products are homemade in the way my grandmother taught me. All you really need is bar soap, white vinegar, lemon juice and a cheap bottle of bleach in your cleaning kit.
I never, ever forget to use my student discount.

SO I sorta play/am relearning to play the flute and (tenor sax),
Treble clef to read: my beloved. Not quite as used to the bass clef but I *can* given enough time
And I have a midi keyboard that I may have mistaken for being able to ALSO be a keyboard oops but at least it was super cheap when I got it đ
and I have *access* to a trumpet if I so wanted bc the sister played in middle school (cost of buying the cheapest instrument < the cost of renting even just for three years in middle school)
And Iâve always had an obsession with the cello and wanted to play SO hopefully Iâll be able to make space for and save enough money to buy one used and though I HIGHLY doubt it would be in time (especially given Iâd probably need to road trip to get it) âŠor if one of the music stores has an absolutely ridiculous sale⊠thatâs also an option đ
Buuut given I canât really remember how to hold a bow properly and tbh was Not very good at it anyway (but hey I only had one free 30 minute lesson that was SUPPOSED to be for the flute to develop skills further in concert band) Iâd need actual lessons and probably couldnât jsut learn on YouTube but the near city has adult basic cello classes!!
But given that maybe bass or guitar would be better first?? But I donât know if my fingers can reach across the fretboard?? I couldnât really when I played guitar in my hotel suite I got upgraded to (âŠI should. Post to my personal social media at some point bc they probably upgraded me bc Iâm young and they figured I would) but itâs still super fun!!
Or like. I know I can finger the ukulele bc I played in third grade but it broke so I canât anymore but back then it was maaaaybe $40 and I fear it would be twice that (ah yeah they are. Also I donât remember how to play at all) (and ukulele basses are even more expensive)
Buuut I also need to brush up on my theory and tbh bc I play wind, I have no idea about Chord theory or progrsssions. So maybe learning in a keyboard (which are fairly cheap in marketplace but I just. Have a Lot of mini trips coming up⊠so I should not by any means. Especially if I also want to get more tattoos in the fall) also I kinda want an alto sax too since fingerings translate
So I canât really decide what to do next (âget good at your current instruments shatters!!â) also I lost the tenor sax mouthpiece after I washed it so I could hopefully start playing again but in sure itâs kicking around in the kitchen somewhere (tbh Iâll need to wash it again if it is though)
Also considered drums bc Ekits are quieter however I have no space (my sax is currently in the sisâ room đ) and then booked a trip instead :P
And like?? I need to figure out which daw (preferably free) I can use to record stuff~
Ah I should probably get a mic at some point but Iâm hoping my phone or earbuds will do the job for me tbh haha
Wanting to maybe fiddle around with a few covers (prev just Kingdom of Cards but gosh there are SO MANY GOOD SONGS less that I am capable of singing - fuck knows I canât actually sing the way they do and my range is Limited but đ€·đ» if Iâm having a good time itâs all good hey)
And then eventually make one of my songs (which. Letâs be honest. Many old lyric papers I recycled now. And I still canât get in to so many of my locked notes in the notes app so I have to most likely come up with something new or newish but thatâs ok what else are emotions for but vent poetry amiright??
Also the ads for nocturnal bass are wearing me down but itâs too expensive when I have no clue what Iâm doing yet. I have a bunch of free sounds loops and resources already⊠as long as I can Actually access them on a portable drive bc my laptop has no space and I need to delete so much off it already tbh
And I know itâs not a tag game but friendly tags for my fellow musicians to ramble on about music/instruments if they want to: @eepymonstrr @ongreenergrasses @hookedhobbies @caffeinatedbraincell @elkkiel (bc drums đ) @branches-in-a-flood (unless itâs too long ago now and doesnât bring you joy to talk about) and anyone else who wants to ! GOODNIGHT!!!

Refurbished Laptops: Affordable Computing and Reliable Solutions
In today's fast-paced world, having a reliable laptop is a must for many individuals and businesses. However, buying a brand-new laptop can be expensive, especially if you need a high-performance device. Luckily, refurbished laptops provide an affordable and reliable alternative that can meet your computing needs without breaking the bank.
What Are Refurbished Laptops?
Refurbished laptops are pre-owned devices that have been restored to their original condition or better by professional refurbishers. These devices may have been returned to the manufacturer due to defects or may have been used by previous owners for a short period. Refurbished laptops undergo a rigorous testing process to ensure that they meet the same quality standards as new laptops.
Benefits of Refurbished Laptops
Affordability: One of the most significant benefits of refurbished laptops is their affordability. You can save up to 50% or more on the cost of a brand-new laptop by opting for a refurbished device. This is especially helpful for students or businesses on a tight budget.
Reliability: Refurbished laptops are thoroughly tested to ensure that they meet the same quality standards as new laptops. The refurbishing process typically involves replacing any faulty or damaged components with new ones, resulting in a reliable and functional device.
Environmentally Friendly: By choosing a refurbished laptop, you are also making an environmentally friendly choice. Refurbishing laptops reduces the amount of electronic waste that ends up in landfills, which helps to protect the environment.
Warranty: Many refurbished laptops come with a warranty, giving you peace of mind knowing that you are covered in case of any issues with the device.
Upgradeable: Refurbished laptops are often more upgradeable than new laptops, as they may have older, standardized hardware components that are easier to replace or upgrade.
How to Choose a Refurbished Laptop
When shopping for a refurbished laptop, it's essential to consider the following factors:
Brand and Model: Opt for a reputable brand and a model that meets your computing needs.
Condition: Look for laptops that are in good cosmetic condition, with minimal scratches or dents.
Specifications: Consider the processor, RAM, storage, and graphics card specifications to ensure that the laptop can handle your computing needs.
Refurbishing Process: Choose a seller or refurbisher who follows a strict refurbishing process that includes testing, repairing, and replacing any faulty components.
Conclusion
Refurbished laptops are a great option for those looking for an affordable and reliable computing solution. By choosing a refurbished laptop, you can save money while still getting a high-quality device that meets your computing needs. Be sure to choose a reputable seller and consider the brand, condition, specifications, and refurbishing process when shopping for a refurbished laptop.

Why I've given up on my current Ko-fi goal
I've been working hard for about a year now to save up money for a new laptop (as I'm sure you've heard), and had very little success. While I have made sales and received tips from friends which I'm extremely grateful for, I'm still nowhere near my goal.
I've raised about $400 CAD since I set my goal, but a decent chunk of it actually came from me selling video games and other knickknacks that I don't need anymore. I'm running out of things to sell, and I've barely reached the halfway point.
Which is why I've had to made the difficult decision to abandon this goal for the time being, at least until I have more money coming in. If that ever happens, anyway.
So in the meantime, I'm going to take what I did raise and try to buy some upgrades for my photography, like a better flash, lens extension tube, etc. Then after that, consider what else I can benefit from and make a more attainable goal for that. I'm also going to be looking into trying out membership tiers again, so check back soon.
I know it can be scary giving money to people on the internet who promise to use it for something with the risk that they just won't do that, but I promise I'll be putting the money I've received so far back into my Craftâą right away.
I hope you guys stick around and continue to enjoy my posts and support me as I do whatever it is that I seem to be doing. I'll stick a few more layers of tape on my laptop and keep chugging on. đ€
