Keep Your Feline Cozy: A Guide to Cat Winter Clothes
As the temperature drops and the days grow shorter, ensuring that your beloved feline stays warm and comfortable becomes a priority. While cats are naturally resilient creatures, not all of them are equipped to handle the harsh winter months, especially those with short fur or health conditions. Enter the world of cat winter clothes—a delightful and practical solution to keep your kitty snug and stylish during the cold season.
Why Your Cat Needs Winter Clothes
Cats, especially those that are indoor-outdoor, short-haired, elderly, or suffer from medical conditions, can greatly benefit from a little extra warmth. Even indoor cats can feel the chill if your home isn’t sufficiently heated. Cold weather can lead to discomfort and health issues such as hypothermia and arthritis flare-ups. Investing in cat winter clothes can help mitigate these risks, ensuring your furry friend remains warm and comfortable.
Types of Cat Winter Clothes
Sweaters and Hoodies: These are the most common types of cat winter clothes. They come in various materials, including wool, fleece, and cotton, providing different levels of warmth. Sweaters and hoodies are easy to put on and take off, making them a convenient option for most cats.
Jackets and Coats: For cats that venture outside, jackets and coats offer added protection against the elements. Waterproof and windproof options are available, ensuring your cat stays dry and warm even in inclement weather.
Thermal Shirts: These are designed to reflect the cat’s body heat, providing a snug and warm layer without being too bulky. Thermal shirts are ideal for indoor cats that need just a bit of extra warmth.
Booties and Socks: While not all cats will tolerate wearing them, booties and socks can protect your cat’s paws from cold surfaces and potential frostbite. They also offer additional traction on slippery surfaces.
Choosing the Right Winter Clothes for Your Cat
When selecting winter clothes for your cat, comfort and safety should be your top priorities. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Fit: Ensure the clothing fits your cat properly. It shouldn’t be too tight or too loose. A snug fit will keep your cat warm without restricting movement.
Material: Opt for soft, non-irritating materials. Cats have sensitive skin, and rough or synthetic fabrics can cause discomfort or allergic reactions.
Design: Look for clothes with easy-to-use fastenings, like Velcro or buttons, rather than zippers, which can catch fur. Avoid clothes with small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed.
Acclimation: Introduce your cat to wearing clothes gradually. Start with short periods and positive reinforcement to help them get used to the new sensation.
Tips for Getting Your Cat to Wear Clothes
Cats are known for their independent nature, and not all of them will take kindly to wearing clothes initially. Here are some tips to make the process smoother:
Start Early: If possible, start dressing your cat in clothes while they are still a kitten. Younger cats are generally more adaptable to new experiences.
Positive Reinforcement: Use treats, praise, and gentle petting to reward your cat for wearing clothes.
Short Sessions: Initially, let your cat wear the clothes for short periods, gradually increasing the duration as they become more comfortable.
Comfort First: Ensure the clothes are comfortable and do not restrict movement or impede natural behaviors like grooming.
Conclusion
Cat winter clothes are not just about fashion; they are about ensuring your feline friend’s comfort and health during the colder months. With the right clothing, your cat can enjoy the winter season just as much as you do. Whether it’s a cozy sweater for lounging indoors or a protective jacket for outdoor adventures, there’s a perfect winter outfit for every cat. Embrace the opportunity to keep your kitty warm and stylish, and you’ll both be purring with happiness all winter long.

Bamboo for Leaf Tree?
When in Portland we were able to visit Bamboo Revolution and were given bamboo plywood and board to make some Leafs and see how the material works with the system and see if we would eventually incorporate bamboo as an additional material option for our Leafs and other parts of the Leaf Tree system. We were finally able to cut the component parts for some new Leafs, and we’re excited to assemble…

here's what I've learned to never pay full price for, because people are giving these items away for free or almost free on Craigslist, Nextdoor, Facebook, at Goodwill, and on eBay (which has a local pickup section) in every sufficiently populated location in the USA.
cost of acquiring these items ranges from "carrying it home from the sidewalk" to "getting a friend with a car to help you pick it up" which is the same amount of effort as going to IKEA for worse quality that costs more, with the notable exception of it being a pain in the ass to coordinate with craigslist sellers, and you often have to wait and watch for what you want to actually show up. it took me about a year to find an acceptable gamer chair left out on the sidewalk, for example. but they cost $100+ new, so I chose to wait.
a lot of this stuff is the kind of thing you don't necessarily intend to keep, just to use in transitional housing or until you can afford a better one.
1. printers of any kind. basic office inkjets are free. ink is easily refillable or has generic ink cartridges way cheaper than brand name for any inkjet up to about 2015, not sure how difficult the newer smart printers are to hack but there's no reason to own a newer one because printing technology has not improved since about 2005. you want a color laser for making zines and wheatpastes? it's on Craigslist RN and someone's mom is desperate to get rid of it
2. bedframes
3. desks
4. tables
5. chairs
6. bookshelves, nice oak bookshelves that don't bend like al dente spaghetti when you put books on them, are rotting on sidewalks rn because they didn't fit in someone's house. go get them
7. scanners. I find a working scanner by a dumpster at least once a quarter, and I don't pick them up because I already have one that I picked up from a dumpster years ago
8. hot tubs. everyone thinks they want a hot tub and that the maintenance and upkeep will be worth it, and they are wrong. Craigslist.
9. sofas, with the caveat that if you are in a bedbug region like New York State you need to be very confident in your bedbug screening skills
10. quality leather shoes. these last forever and are expensive new. eBay is best for these
11. plates, glassware, silverware. all of these are able to be sterilized to whatever standard you feel comfortable with but if you eat in restaurants you've already put a fork in your mouth that hundreds of people have drooled on so try not to fool yourself
12. televisions and computer monitors
13. houseplants. similar to the bedbug warning above, you need to screen these for pests like fungus gnats and mealybugs
14. dressers, wardrobes, china hutches, cabinets, chests of drawers, etc
15. mirrors
16. clothes hangers
17. moving boxes
18. mattresses to a certain extent. I don't like secondhand used mattresses but unstained, unused mattresses are surprisingly common, especially since the foam mail order mattress boom started and people keep getting told by the mattress companies to just get rid of/keep any mattresses they want to return for flaws or wrong sizes or whatever. bedbug warning on this obviously
19. sheets and towels. you gotta launder them obviously
20. basic clothing, especially for kids. normie type clothing is so numerous people often just throw them away because they can't get anyone to take them
21. kitchenware like cooking utensils and pots n pans. don't use chipped or scratched Teflon/nonstick if you can help it. everyone needs one basic steel chef knife, which can be sharpened and maintained indefinitely. people throw these away CONSTANTLY
22. household consumables like laundry soap and dish soap. people often accidentally buy the wrong brand, scent, or develop allergies and want to get rid of extra
23. pet supplies like collars, leashes, dog crates, litter boxes, litter itself, dog beds, toys, carriers, etc
24. medical equipment of all kinds. people who take care of all kinds of patients end up with tons of leftover, sealed, miscellaneous stuff when that person recovers or dies, and they often give it away. adult diapers, hospital beds, IV stands, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, fracture boots and splints, knee braces, canes, catheter packs, ice packs, heat packs, sterile paper sheeting, gauze, slings, over-the-door stretching and rehab pulleys, mattress protectors, etc
25. washers and dryers, both the basic household cube type and the small twin tub or rock tumbler type. people upgrade these when the old ones are still working, just squeaky or a little weird or sometimes just old
26. vacuum cleaners. secondhand ones are sort of icky but you can get rid of the ickiness by wiping them down with a rag and isopropyl alcohol inside and out. use an exacto or utility knife to slice off the hair and string wrapped around the roller. buy a new filter on Amazon. people throw away vacuums that work perfectly all the time because they don't actually know how to clean them out or do maintenance. bedbug and pet hair warning obviously
27. microwaves
28. refrigerators
30. lamps
31. any kind of exercise equipment including stationary bikes, ellipticals and weights/weight benches
32. any kind of piano. there's a grand on my local Craigslist for free rn
33. scrap wood and lumber
34. pallets
35. wood shipping crates
36. newborn, toddler and baby equipment like breast milk pumps and storage, bottles, bottle racks, diapers, etc. anything a little guy will grow out of fast will end up being given away
37. air conditioners, humidifiers and dehumidifiers. these will be most numerous during their respective off seasons
list updated 2/13/24 based on recent Craigslist trawling
38. jars, both canning type jars and clean food jars like from pickled or jelly bought at the store
39. rugs. most of my rugs are sidewalk finds. rugs will almost always be dirty. a decent consumer grade rug cleaner costs under $100, it's cheaper to just buy one if you have the space to store it. flushing the scavenged rug with soap, hot water, vinegar, alcohol, etc will clean almost anything but huge bedbug and allergen warning on this item

I saw your post about how peafowl are ... resource and knowledge intensive to keep. Is there a bird you would recommend for beginners? Are quail easy?
Compared to peafowl or even to chickens, yes, but that also depends on what you mean by quail. There are a BUNCH of species that are able to be kept in captivity, depending on where you live. If you're in the USA, coturnix and button quail are both domesticated species that do well in relatively small enclosures (think, a large rabbit hutch or one of those little "coops" from tractor supply co that they think are for chickens but are only suitable for babies at best). Most people that want to keep quail for meat or eggs are keeping coturnix not buttons but if you just want cute pets, button quail are adorable. The males of both species are LOUD though.
Coturnix do well eating game bird crumble mixed with layer crumble, as they need around 2.5-3% calcium if they're laying, which is about half what chickens need. They also need a higher protein than chickens, especially as babies (28-30 as babies, 21-26% as adults), or you don't get much in the way of eggs. Other than that, fresh water and a clean home and they're good to go.
The hens typically start laying by around 6-10 weeks (the Celadon gene can cause laying delays), the boys will be crowing on a similar timeline, so be sure you are okay with the noise or know what you're going to do with culls. Coturnix can be kept outdoors year round... button quail cannot, they need to be indoors if it's cold out. The biggest problems I've had with the coturnix is a) noise (which I've mostly bred out) and b) water in the winter. My water system only works when water can stay liquid. So, in the winter, the quail switch over to water bottles with 3D printed drinker bottoms, and those get changed 2+ times a day. They look kinda like this:
and c) aggression in a poorly-bred line. I don't see it much with my Celadon line anymore, but when I first got them, and in the new outcrossed babies, the males would be relentlessly either on the girls or fighting each other, and sometimes a girl would also do this, just start attacking everyone. I culled against it from day 1, and now they're fine, but I had a group of outcross boys that came from my Celadons x fresh blood and the boys were unmanageable immediately. It doesn't matter because I'm not keeping any of them, but I do worry it'll come back on birds I /want/ because the girls may carry that. So that's just something to be aware of, I guess. Ask the breeder about it before you buy.
If you just want "A Bird" and not specifically farm fowl: you want a pigeon or two! They bond to their humans or to each other, they do silly things and have Antics, there is a ton of easily accessible info about their nutrition (and their food is easy to acquire), care, and behavior, and there's always ones looking for homes. Since they were bred as companion and even work animals, not just as food, they socialize easily with humans and they can be kept indoors and unlike quail, their noises are pleasant.
Of course that doesn't dismiss the need to do your research on what it would entail to keep one (or two!), but at least that's easier to do well.

I see once again people on the internet complaining about giving aid to Ukraine, with the usual beats of "I support Ukraine, but ...", "I am sympathetic, but ..." followed by a combination of "it doesn't seem to do much difference", "Ukraine should just negotiate with Russia" (read: give up), "we have our own problems"/"the government should give the money to our own poor/homeless/struggling citizens" or my especially hated "it is inevitable that Russia wins, they are too dedicated and the only difference is that mamy people will die in the meantime".
First of all, unless you are certain that in the case of armed robbers breaking into your house, you would be willing to let them steal everything, watch them rape your partner and children, kill your pet and then blow up your house as they leave, and be grateful that they didn't just kill you without any expectations that someone will come and help you, then shut the fuck up about negotiations.
But what I wanted to say, especially to people from the US and UK, because it is appalling that this is not talked about at every opportunity: your governments are not expected to provide aid just out of the goodness of their hearts. They are required to, as per the Budapest Memorandum. Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons and USA and UK promised to guarantee their safety. If they kept them, a lot of this would likely not happen, because Russians are cowards and wouldn't attack a country with nuclear weapons.
I will argue relentlessly that all the rest of us, especially those in the EU, have moral obligation to help Ukraine and that even if we want to be selfish and pragmatic about it, it is also in our own best interest, because showing bullies that they are free to do what they want benefits nobody who wants to live in a free and democratic world. But US and UK have also legal obligation to help. Unless, of course, they want to look like their words can't be trusted and there is no point in signing any documents about global security ever. But then don't make surprise Pikachu faces when every country goes on to try developing or otherwise obtaining their own nukes, because it sure looks like having them is the only real guarantee of safety. I was under the impression that this sort of thinking is what we have been trying to change in the last couple of decades.
As for it looking like Russian victory is inevitable, that is in huge part because of how slow the supply of aid has been. No, we can't ever know for certain how things would develop in alternative timelines, but a lot of experts agree that if Ukraine got everything they asked for more quickly, the situation now would be much better for them. So it's not an argument to stop aid, on the contrary, we must provide more of it and more quickly. Imagine if USA was not providing military aid for millions of dollars to USSR in WW2 (yes, that is another topic that is not talked about enough), who knows how the war would have ended or how many more people would have died.
Please, people, think in context and remember your history, before you give into those pseudo-pacifistic talking points.

Hiii!
Can you please write headcanons for Laswell and Valeria having a wife who is an highschool art teacher? (or even just a highschool teacher)
Hi!
I wrote these because I immediately had ideas for them both! I also want to say how underappreciated teachers are as a whole and they deserve more everything. A close family member of mine went to college to be a teacher and often substituted a lot, so that helped me a lot. I wrote this in the mind of the American School system because Kate lives in the USA and because I only have knowledge in the American School System. I will be posting Valeria's next!
Part One/ Part Two/ Part Three
♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡ ♡ She 100% is in awe of how you deal with so much attitude and teenagers all day, everyday, for seemigly way too many days straight.
♡ Loves to do her paperwork sitting next to you while you grade papers or create assignments. She often finds it easier to do paperwork with you, so she loves this time.
♡ if you come home stressed about parent teacher conferences (let's be honest here half the time it's the parents fault for the kids awful attitude and they blame it on the teachers or say some rude shit) she will often tell you that it's not your fault and make you a warm drink, because she was going to make her umpteenth coffee anyways.
♡ You both often are exhausted from paper work and fall asleep at the table until one of you wakes up and wakes the other up to head to bed, or to make more coffee and keep going after a power nap, teachers have a ton of shit to do.
♡ If you are an art teacher she loves when you bring home the art work show it to her, though after the walls and fridge are full she will mentally beg you to put it in a drawer somewhere.
♡ Kate loves when you talk about students and call them 'your kids' knowing that you love your job even though sometimes like her you wish you could take a long well needed vacation.
♡ She also feels sad when you tell her about a student who had opened up to you/you had found out that they were going through something at home, she hates how terribly out of it you are and seem wishing you could save them.
♡ Sometimes, she gets an odd day off in the middle of the week and wishes it was easier for you to call out. She will understand completely, but she will wait for you to get home.
♡ Genuinely shocked when you say you need more supplies, you had already seemingly bought way too many off already, "How could they go through that many pencils?!" Or "How often do you write on a whiteboard that you already need more packs of markers?"
♡ Watching you spend your own check on them makes her realize just how little you get paid and how underfunded the school you work at is. She loves and hates watching how excited you are to spend your money on your students.
♡ Loves watching you plan fun lessons for your students, often running them by her to see if she has any feedback, she doesn't but she will grin as you explain and the pure excitement in your voice.
♡ Kate loves your outfits, often being as she describes 'very you' and loves to watch you happily wear them as you get ready for work.
♡ Will make jokes about your patience with them often, "How do you deal with them?" Loves it if you counter back with."I deal with you." She adores the pure amount of willpower you have to deal with teenagers every day. She 100% says all of the time, "I don't know how you can do it, I couldn't."
♡ Hates how much time you put in for your work that isn't paid, often noticing how you work late into the night to get papers graded and making up lessons on your own time.
♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡
(I will edit this more when I get done putting my cows in for the night, yes I own cows, they are only pets, I love them.)

Want to Help Punish Ron DeSantis?
Boycott some of these Florida-based businesses!
Some notable examples:
Tourism (Disney World, Universal Orlando, Busch Gardens, etc)
Bealls Outlet Stores
Bloomin' Brands Restaurants (Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill, others)
Checkers/Rally's
Chewy Inc. (online pet retailer)
Darden Restaurants (Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, others)
Hertz (Car rentals)
National Beverage (soft drink producer - notably La Croix and Faygo)
Office Depot (office supply store)
Publix (grocery store chain)
Restaurant Brands International (the American restaurants - Burger King, Firehouse Subs, Popeyes)
Winn-Dixie (grocery store chain)
There are others, and some of these are more common in the southeastern USA (notably Publix & Winn Dixie), but if you can avoid buying from these brands, please consider doing so!
DISCLAIMER: The key words are IF you CAN avoid. Please don't feel guilty if there are necessities that you can only get from certain businesses, like pet medications through Chewy, or the only grocery store in reasonable distance happens to be Publix.
EDIT 06/02/2023:
Back in 2015, the Tampa Bay Rays were one of three pro sports teams (the others being the San Francisco Giants and New England Patriots) to sign an amicus brief in support of same-sex marriage.
If you want to support a FL sports team, that's your go-to!

Longpost
Mod Note: We won’t be continuing to post submissions about this person, we’d strongly recommend just blocking and ignoring them.
Update on VM/NR/SD situation. (moved under the cut by the mods)
So, after the VM meltdown that happened on site and here, I have left a reply on her submission in this blog, and explained how she was wrong but I do understand her frustrations regarding feeling insecure about her own disability. I’ve offered her to reach out if she’s like to talk it out. She claims she is Russian, and so was I, so I thought it might be easier to communicate without the language barrier. Well, I have found out that she has been catfishing me. She is not Russian. When I offered to talk in Russian originally, she at most said a couple basic phrases, and kept switching to English. She said she “wanted to practice English”. Kind of a red flag right away, but I went along with it. She kept making basic mistakes in Russian that even a child wouldn’t make: messing up cases/endings of words and genders of words, including when referring to herself (kept referring to herself in male form). This is something very hard to grasp for a foreigner or, well, a translator, but is intuitive for a native, whom she claims to be. She has used google images to show things that are “nearby her” when we started getting to know each other, and I have easily found that they were google maps images. She used a photo of a store with a one-of-a-kind name, and I found the framing and quality of the photo suspicious. Given the other red flags (more to follow, this is not chronological order), I decided to look up the store. It was cropped weird to avoid google maps watermarks, and foliage around the sign matched up perfectly. I found her “back yard” almost immediately as well, it was by the store. Again, trees and whatnot matched up perfectly to a google maps image. “Store” pic:
“Back yard” pic:
She also shared a pet pic with a box of pet supplies of brand “Chewy”. After looking it up, it turned out to be a company only operating in united states. She also claims she lived in USA for a bit with her partner, but she eventually had to return home. I felt like it was just a convenient backstory for her and how she knows english and uses very americanized phrases sometimes. I asked her how did she got a visa back then. She didn’t manage to come up with a single detail to tell me and changed topic. She also holds a lot of stereotypes about Russia/Putin that americans have, but russians know/consider not true.Image with pet supplies of a brand that only operates and delivers to USA:
I think she is a pathological liar. I brought up a certain health condition as a reference, and she suddenly went “oh i also have the health condition. Didn’t know how to bring this up”. Proof:
She also gave completely incorrect information about local pagan religions she apparently practices. (Was disprovable in one google search. Most blatant fact she got wrong was when I brought up the name of the whole religion, and she thought it was a single deity by that name, and she started talking about it as a singular entity). I have a suspicion she lies about most of her conditions to spew toxic opinions and get away with it because she’s also disabled/poc/etc.Obviously this is
just my speculation,
the only thing I know for sure is that she is not Russian and does not speak the language, nor does she live where she claims. Finally, this is how our final conversation went down:

Dozing on High
While the Tree Top is perfect for rambunctious play, it’s also great for dozing high above the action in the home. This tree top is a fair bit smaller than the version we’re working with for our most recent Leaf Tree version, but Cosmo really enjoys it!
