2024 READING - COMPLETED BOOK 16/12
Hehe, well hi again. Just like my most recent last post from *checks blog*...August..., I've fallen a bit off the wagon for both reading and posting.
Despite starting this book soon after finishing my last, it took me months to get through it. Not because I didn't enjoy the book - I absolutely did. The other day I simply realized I wasn't setting aside time anymore to read. And therefore, I haven't been reading at all.
Lo and behold - once I set aside some time before bed to read again, I found myself wanting to read more and more! Funny how that works. It's kind of like the gym - difficult to set aside the time and energy to start, but so satisfying and addicting once you get rolling.
With the end of the year drawing to a close, I knew I wanted to finish this book before Christmas. Let me get to what is probably my final finished book for this year: Five (324 pages).
This is a murder mystery thriller type of story and I had a lot of fun with it. A main component is geocaching, which was interesting to read about. I've never been geocaching, but admittedly it does seem like a fun hobby. Maybe that is something to try in the new year!
The ending was very entertaining to watch unfold, and I really didn't see the twist coming. Definitely a fun read.
I wish I had more to say about it, but through writing these posts for every book I've read, I've come to realize I just don't like to "review" things lol. I like to read and move on. This is something I've been thinking about and will probably speak on more at length in my final wrap up post.
But all in all, I liked this one and recommend it if the premise sounds interesting. It didn't disappoint, even if it did take me months to sit myself down and get through it haha

Summaries under the cut
The Music of Dolphins by Karen Hesse
Mila creates headlines around the world when she is rescued from an unpopulated island off the coast of Florida. Now a teenager, she has been raised by dolphins from the age of four.
Researchers teach Mila language and music. She learns, too, about rules and expectations, about locked doors and broken promies, disappointment and betrayal.
But the more Mila finds out what it means to be human, the more deeply she longs for her ocean home.
Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat by Lynne Jonell
Emmy was a good girl. At least she tried very hard to be good. She did her homework without being told. She ate all her vegetables, even the slimy ones. And she never talked back to her nanny, Miss Barmy, although it was almost impossible to keep quiet, some days.
She really was a little too good. Which is why she liked to sit by the Rat. The Rat was not good at all . . .
Gideon the Cutpurse by Linda Buckley-Archer
1763.
Gideon Seymour, cutpurse and gentleman, hides from the villainous Tar Man. Suddenly the sky peels away like fabric and from the gaping hole fall two curious-looking children. Peter Schock and Kate Dyer have fallen straight from the twenty-first century, thanks to an experiment with an antigravity machine. Before Gideon and the children have a chance to gather their wits, the Tar Man takes off with the machine -- and Kate and Peter's only chance of getting home. Soon Gideon, Kate, and Peter are swept into a journey through eighteenth-century London and form a bond that, they hope, will stand strong in the face of unfathomable treachery.
Dragonbreath by Ursula Vernon
It's not easy for Danny Dragonbreath to be the sole mythical creature in a school for reptiles and amphibians -- especially because he can't breathe fire like other dragons (as the school bully loves to remind him). But having a unique family comes in handy sometimes, like when his sea-serpent cousin takes Danny and his best iguana friend on a mindboggling underwater tour, complete with vomiting sea cucumbers and giant squid. It sure beats reading the encyclopedia to research his ocean report . . .
Undertow by Michael Buckley
Sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker’s life is forever changed when she witnesses the arrival of 30,000 Alpha, a five-nation race of ocean-dwelling warriors, on her beach in Coney Island. The world’s initial wonder and awe over the Alpha quickly turns ugly and paranoid and violent, and Lyric’s small town transforms into a military zone with humans on one side and Alpha on the other. When Lyric is recruited to help the crown prince, a boy named Fathom, assimilate, she begins to fall for him. But their love is a dangerous one, and there are forces on both sides working to keep them apart. Only, what if the Alpha are not actually the enemy? What if they are in fact humanity’s only hope of survival? Because the real enemy is coming. And it’s more terrifying than anything the world has ever seen.
Poison by Chris Wooding
Poison has always been a willful, contrary girl, prone to being argumentative and stubborn. So when her sister is snatched by the mean-spirited faeries, she seeks out the Phaerie Lord to get her back.
But finding him isn't easy, and the quest leads Poison into a murderous world of intrigue, danger, and deadly storytelling. With only her wits and her friends to aid her, Poison must survive the attentions of the Phaerie Lord, rescue her sister, and thwart a plot that's beyond anything she (or the reader) can imagine. . . .
Kiki Strike by Kirsten Miller
Life will never be the same for Ananka Fishbein after she ventures into an enormous sinkhole near her New York City apartment. A million rats, delinquent Girl Scouts out for revenge, and a secret city below the streets of Manhattan combine in this remarkable novel about a darker side of New York City you have only just begun to know about…
Willa by Robert Beatty
Move without a sound. Steal without a trace.
Willa, a young night-spirit, is her clan's best thief. She creeps into the cabins of the day-folk under cover of darkness and takes what they won't miss. It's dangerous work--the day-folk kill whatever they don't understand--but Willa will do anything to win the approval of the padaran, the charismatic leader of the Faeran people.
When Willa's curiosity leaves her hurt and stranded in the day-folk world, she calls upon the old powers of her beloved grandmother, and the unbreakable bonds of her forest allies, to escape. Only then does she begin to discover the shocking truth: that not all of her day-folk enemies are the same, and that the foundations of her own Faeran society are crumbling. What do you do when you realize that the society you were born and raised in is rife with evil? Do you raise your voice? Do you stand up against it?
As forces of unfathomable destruction encroach on her forest home, Willa must decide who she truly is, facing deadly force with the warmest compassion, sinister corruption with trusted alliance, and finding a home for her longing heart.

Book 3 Chapter 4 - They Ride the Wood Under the Mountains
Text Audio
Synopsis:
They ride on, and Ursula tells the tale of her capture.
Summary:
'If thou take her as a thrall, thou wert best take me also; else shall I follow thee as a free man and slay thee when I may. Many are the days of the year, and on some one of them will betide the occasion for the knife.'
When Ralph awoke the next morning, the sun was completely up and it was as bright in the forest as the trees would allow. He got up at once and looked around for his companion, but didn’t see her, and for a moment he thought that he had only dreamed about her; but he saw that the fire had been revived from its embers, and close by were the armor and strange helmet and the sword that the maiden had. Soon he saw her coming through the trees barefoot, with the green-sleeved silk overcoat hanging down past her knees and her hair floating loose around her. She stepped lightly up to Ralph with a cheerful, smiling face and a warm color in her cheeks, but her eyes were damp as though she could hardly keep back tears of joy at their meeting.
He thought she was even more beautiful than before, and moved to put his arms around her, but she held him away, blushing again. Then she said in her sweet, clear voice: “Hail, fellow-traveler! Now our day’s work begins. I went down yonder and found a bright pool of water, where I washed off. If you’ll go and do the same, I’ll prepare breakfast in the meantime and we’ll be on the road soon.”
He did as she told him, thinking about her as he did, and returning fresh and happy. Then he tended their horses and gave them fodder he found beside the pool, and then turned to Ursula and found her with the meal ready, so they ate happily.
When they were done, Ralph went and saddled their horses, then returned to find Ursula tying up her long hair. She smiled at him and said: “Now that we’re getting on the road again, I must be an armed knight once more. In truth, I let my hair down and wore my surcoat loose as a sign of my secret. Truthfully, it pains me that now that we have met after this long time, I have to dress so ignobly. But need has driven me to it, and my opportunity to steal this fair armor from a young man at Utterbol, the nephew of the lord. Like his uncle, he was halfway my suitor and halfway my tyrant.[1] I will tell you all of this later, and the way I dodged between whippings and kisses these past days. But for now, let’s arm ourselves and mount up. But first, here are some tools that you can use to keep us from starving to death. As for me, I’m no archer, and I’m only good at looking like a swordsman.”
She gave him a short composite bow and a quiver of arrows, which he took happily. Then they helped each other into their armor, and as she handled his she said: “This is well-made and sturdy armor you have, my friend; my mail shirt is like a toy compared to it, with its gold and silver rings and gems at the collar. These plates are wide and well-made, and mine are almost like jewelry on my arms and legs.”
He looked at her lovingly and loved the sight of her delicate hands against the grey chain mail, and he said: “That is a good thing, dear friend. SInce I am to be your shield, it benefits me to be well-protected.”
She looked at him and her lips trembled, and she put out her hand as though to touch his cheek, but pulled back and said: “Come, let us mout up, my fellow warrior.”
So they got to horse and went on through the thick pine woods, where the ground was covered in pine needles and everything was still and windless.[2] As they rode, Ursula said: “I’m looking for signs of the path to the Sage of Swevenham. Did you see a stream yesterday?”
“Yes,” said Ralph, “I rode beside it for a while, but left it when it seemed to go too far north.”
“You were right,” she said, “aside from the fact that your changing course has brought us together, following the stream would have taken you to Utterbol eventually. But here is another one that runs straight down from the hills—not the Great mountains, but the high ground where the Sage lives. I don’t know if the ride is long or short, but the stream will lead us there.”
They rode onwards through the wood, and there was little change in it for hours. When they stopped to rest, Ursula let out a deep sigh, like one who has been relieved of a burden.
Ralph said: “Why do you sigh, fellow traveller?”
“Oh,” she said, “it is for relief, and a thought that I had: just a little while ago I was a thrall, living amongst fears that sickened my heart, and then after that I was a lonely wanderer. But now… So, I was thinking that if I ever make it back to my own land and my home, the scent of pine trees will always make me happy.”
Ralph looked at her eagerly, but said nothing for a while. At last he spoke: “Tell me, friend, if we are attacked by bandits, what will we do?”
“That is not likely to happen,” she said, “as men fear these woods, so there are few people to rob in them. But if we happen to find some, the mark of Utterbol on my armor will keep them away.” Then she was silent for a while before continuing. “In truth, we may be pursued by riders from Utterbol; for though they fear the wood, they fear their Lord more. However, we have gotten well ahead of them, and it is unlikely that they could catch us before we reach the Sage, who will likely be of help.”
“Yes,” said Ralph, “but if they do catch us, do we let them take us alive?”
She looked at him seriously and placed a hand on the beads around her neck. “For this, we must live as long as we can, no matter what happens. Even at the worst, some way of escape may be opened to us. But oh, how much easier it would be to die than be taken back to Utterbol!”
They rode a while in silence, but at last Ralph spoke up, slowly and with a dull, serious voice: “Maybe it would be good if you told me something about those dark days at Utterbol?”
“Maybe,” she said, “but I won’t tell you about them. Truthfully, there are some things which a man cannot easily tell another man, even if he is as good a friend as you are to me. Now remember,” (and she smiled a bit) “that this armor is a disguise and that I am a woman, and there are things which a woman cannot tell a man, even when he has held her in his arms for a long time.” And with that, she blushed deeply.
He said in a kind voice: “I’m sorry I asked you about it, and I won’t do it again.”
She smiled at him in a friendly way, and they spoke about other things as they rode on.
After a while, Ralph said: “If it wouldn’t make you uncomfortable, could you tell me about how you fell into the hands of the men of Utterbol? I’d like to know the story.”
She laughed openly and said: “Are you going to be stuck on the time of my captivity forever, my friend? And don’t you know some of the story already? However, I can tell you about it without sorrow, though it is a dark story.”
He said, somewhat ashamed: “I just want to hear about you and your life, since we’re fellow-travelers.”
“Well,” she said, “this happened outside Utterbol, so I will tell it to you.”
“After I had been taken to the slave market at Cheaping Knowe and not been sold, the wild man led me toward the mountains by Goldburg[3]; and as we drew near them one day, he said to me that he was glad from the bottom of his heart that no one had bought me at the market. When I asked him why, he began crying as he rode beside me, and said: ‘I wish to God that I had never taken you.’ I asked what was wrong, though I thought I knew. He said: ‘What’s wrong is that you are not of the clan to which I must marry, and I love you dearly and want to marry you. And now I’m worried that you would never love me.’ I told him that that was true, but that if he would be friendly with me, I would be his friend. ‘That does little to help,’ he said; ‘I want you to want to be with me.’ I said that that would not happen, and that I could only love one man. ‘Is he alive?’ he asked.
“‘I hope to God that he is,’ I said, ‘but if he is dead, then my desire for men is dead, too.’
“So we talked, and he was quite sad, but after that he was as good to me as a brother. He offered to lead me back and put me safely on the road to Whitwall, but as you know, I needed to keep going forward, not back.
“So we entered the mountains of Goldburg; but one morning, when he got up, he was more depressed than usual, and restless as well, and could not decide whether to go or stay or do anything else. I asked what was wrong and he said: ‘My end draws near; I have seen my fetch, and am fey.[4] My grave awaits me in these mountains.’
“‘You’ve had a nightmare,’ I said, ‘there is no meaning in such things.’ And I spoke lightly and tried to comfort him, but his mood did not lift.
“‘This is bad for you, too,’ he said, ‘you will be worse off without me in these lands.’
“I thought so, too, and felt sorry for him, for though he was strange and rough, he was not a bad man. Despite efforts, I found myself drawn down into a mood like his, and so we both went on drearily. Around sunset, as we came around a corner of the cliffs, we suddenly found ourselves in the midst of a group of about a dozen armed men who were setting up camp under a big rock. Four of them were still on horses, so that when Bull Nosy (that was the wildman’s name) tried to flee with me, it was useless. The horsemen captured us and brought us before an evil-looking man, who—to put it briefly—was the Lord of Utterbol. He paid Bull Nosy no mind, but looked at me closely and handled me like a man does with a horse at market. I came close to attacking him (I had a knife in my bodice), but the reminder of my beads stayed my hand. He told Bull to sell me to him, which Bull refused, standing defiantly before the Lord, scowling at him. But the Lord laughed in his face and said:
“‘So be it. I will take her without a price, and thank you for saving me my gold.’
“Then Bull said: ‘If you take her as a thrall, you should take me as well, or else I will follow you as a free man and kill you when I can. There are many days in the year, and on one of them I will find the opportunity for the knife.’
“At that, the Lord grew very pale and said nothing, but looked at one of his men who stood by Bull with a big sword in his fist. He lifted his hand twice, and let it fall twice, and at that, the man stepped back one pace and swung his sword, striking Bull and killing him.
“Then the color came back into the Lord’s face and he said: ‘Now, men, let us eat and be merry, for at least we have found something in the mountains.’ So they ate and drank and gave me food as well, but I had no desire to eat, for my soul was sick and my heart was heavy under the weight of uttermost evil. And all-together I was sad for Bull Nosy, for he was not a bad man and had become my friend.
“So they stayed there that night, leaving Bull lying like a dog unburied in the wilderness, and in the morning they took the road to Utterbol and went quickly, having no baggage and stopping only to eat and rest for the night. The Lord had me brought to him on the first evening of our journey and he saw me privately and spoke to me, telling me to do shameful things that I would not, at which point he threatened me terribly. Being alone with him, I told him to be careful or I would kill him or myself. At that, he turned pale like he had before Bull Nosy, but he did not have anyone kill me, just sent me back to my keepers. So I came to Utterbol unharmed.”
“And at Utterbol,” said Ralph, “What happened there?”
Ursula smiled at him and held up a finger, answering: “Utterbol is a very big house in a fair land, and there are many floors and rooms. I was brought to a good chamber among the gardens, and women servants were given to me who took me to the bath and dressed me in fine clothing and gave me food and drink and everything I needed. That is all I will say for now.”
Notes:
[1] Originally, she calls him his “eme,” which is a Scottish word for uncle. Also she says he was half her “lover,” but that has deeper connotations nowadays.
[2] It originally says “pine-tree needles” which I find funny.
[3] The mountains here are described as being “above” Goldburg, a reference to their adjacency and height, but a bit confusing because it seems to imply that they would be towards the north (not west). Therefore, I tweaked it.
[4] A “fetch” is an apparition which one sees as a duplicate of themself, the appearance of which foretells the person’s imminent death. It is the Irish counterpart of the German doppelgänger, and both fill similar roles. “Fey” in this sense, means “doomed.”

Who are the greatest characters in all of literature?
(Sub-questions: Best characters in Shakespeare? Do you agree with Bloom's sextet of Hamlet and Falstaff first equal, followed by Macbeth, Rosalind, Cleopatra, and Iago?)
It's an interesting question, because there essentially are no "characters" exactly before Shakespeare. People act scandalized by Bloom's "invented the human" line, but he's transparent about deriving it from Hegel, and it's not that different from the academically respectable New Historicist thesis on "Renaissance self-fashioning."
Before Shakespeare—and then after Shakespeare but only in popular fiction—there are myths and archetypes to whom a few stable characteristics attach but who are available for reinvention and recirculation, an infinitely malleable legendary surface without inherent psychological depth: Prometheus or Odysseus, Arthur or Roland, Count Dracula or Sherlock Holmes.
On the other hand, the type of modernity inaugurated by Shakespeare—and then passing from him into Romanticism, realism, and modernism—gives us the character of bottomless, labyrinthine depth rather than an iconic or archetypal but flat figure: tragic heroes like Hamlet, Milton's Satan, Goethe's Faust, Captain Ahab, and the Brothers Karamazov, or more strictly novelistic figures like Emmas Woodhouse and Bovary, Hester Prynne, Anna Karenina, Isabel Archer, Clarissa Dalloway. And then, reuniting the novel to the epic, the character to the archetype, perhaps the 20th century's greatest literary character: Leopold Bloom.
(Honorable mention for accomplishing the same synthesis as Joyce but from the other direction: Ursula Brangwen. If Joyce tailors a Homeric hero to Flaubertian proportions, Lawrence turn an Austen heroine into a Biblical prophetess.)
Best characters in Shakespeare: I do mostly agree with Bloom (Harold, not Leopold). I love Falstaff less than he does, though; there's a meanness or squalor in Falstaff he doesn't seem to see. I would also replace the bewildered Macbeth with the raging Lear, and I might add Prospero to our roll call, since he is (I fancy) the closest thing we have to a Shakespearean self-portrait.

a thought that's spiraled out of control over the past six or so days
so i'm a disney fan, right?
well, i'm also a Swiftie, so there's really one way i can think of to bring these two together after the Eras Tour movie was released on disney+.
disney villains and their respective eras (plus Asha for those who see her as a villain protagonist due to the flaws in her plan to return the wishes to the people of Rosas).
just hear me out on a few of these:
Queen of Hearts: Red by default, but could also fit for 1989 because of the song Wonderland.
Yzma: Lover for The Man, not only because she's Kuzco's advisor, but because based on legal reasons he can't exactly rule the Incan Empire on the case that he's a minor.
Magnifico: Lover for not only the more love-centered songs, such as Paper Rings, Lover, and ME!, to highlight his relationship with Amaya, but also for The Archer (lyrical evidence: "Awake in the night, I pace like a ghost. The room is on fire, invisible smoke. 'Cause all of my heroes die all alone, ..." and "All the king's horses, all the king's men, couldn't put me together again. 'Cause all my enemies started out friends, ...") for his descent into madness and paranoia because of Star's arrival.
Ursula: 1989 (not just because that's the release year for Little Mermaid!) partly for Bad Blood, but mayhaps also for Blank Space and New Romantics for her disguise as Vanessa being the third piece of the love triangle that makes up the crux of the moments rising towards the three days of Ariel's time in the human world coming to a close before the climax kicks itself into high gear.
Madam Mim: either Speak Now for the fantasy elements in some parts of the album, or Folklore for mad woman (come on it's literally in her epithet!!!)
those are just a few of my ideas! might make a slideshow for a possible future PowerPoint night because this has been in my head for nearly a week now and i regret nothing!!! ^^

I wanna play triangle strategy because I love Benedict and Frederica and Geela but I also wanna play fe7 because I ADORE AND LOVE HECTOR WITH MY ENTIRE HEART. Help me.
Triangle Strategy gave the "me" back then a migraine in every chapter by making my already-running-at-high-capacity brain even more cognitive load (which was contributed by choosing to play it on Hard Mode like every other game i own because "hey if it's hard I'll have to spend even more time on it and earn back every buck! Brilliant!" completely forgetting that, chief, you ain't actually good at gaming you dipshit).
And since I have a negative bias against it you are currently sick, I say play Fire Emblem 7 and let Hector the Guy Who Showed Me How Fucking Sick Axes Are (because the Lyndis campaign deadass made me think axes are dumb because nani the fuck is that accuracy rate? What's the point of it hitting hard if they usually can't hit for shits?! And then Hector showed up) cure you with sheer Hectorness.
Also, biased and based for that Hector admiration. You also liked Matthew and Serra right? If not mistaken? Anyone else?
Mine favourites were actually
Louise
and Lucius
and Harken (the hero guy who isn't Raven; I swear people forget this guys exists)
and CANAS!!
and Ursula
and Limstella
and Will (the archer guy; I swear everyone also forgets he exists)
and obviously my "namesake"
and... yes, Hector. Who the fuck can ignore his amazingness?!
Absolutely detest Eliwood. Fucking Eliweak.
Ooh on that note! I saw your Triangle Strategy biases in passing I think! Anna, Ezana the witch girl, Geela, Julio? And yea!!! I really adored Frederica's personal story too! I was actually quite invested in it even though she ultimately wasn't one of my biases. It was really pumping!
My favorites (in no particular order) were:
MEDINA! ME BESTO FURRENDO! (one-sided)
THAT GEOLOGIST GIRL! ALSO MY BESTO FURRENDO (one-sided)
The ice mage scholar pretty boy dude who's always about his magical magnum opus
Jens the blacksmith fella. I know he's so... normal and unexceptional? But I have the tendency to favor that sort of character too. See Will for example.
Julio (admirable government servant)
Ezana, yes I like her too... But I kinda wish I could give her a pair of undies.
That dancer lady! I dig her kind of personality!!!
Quahuag! This kid who can see into the future or something!
Benedict....
...and Roland.
Yea, the last two really made my last few chapters a head-splitting experience. On the one hand, Benedict was clashing with my idealistic "half." On the other, ROLAND THE FUCK ARE YOU EVEN ADVOCATING?! This is so OUT OF YOUR CHARACTER!
Nonetheless, I actually enjoyed these two's backstories and characters, and kinda resonate enough to like them.
#π-ting!!!#GET WELL SOON#PLAY FE7#NO TRIANGLE STRATEGY#TRIANGLE STRATEGY'S BIGGEST DISADVANTAGE IS THE LACK OF HECTOR

okay. i now have the time to talk about this monster of a chapter. hopefully i don't need to pastebin it.
if you have never played battle before dawn on hhm, forget EVERYTHING you think you know about it as a chapter.
jaffar is unkillable? Wrong, he gets 3HKO'd by swordreaver fighters and usually if he gets hit by two of them, a mage or hero can finish him off. you can reach him somewhat quickly if you're lucky, but you have no say over when he uses his elixirs (already kind of a funds mald), nor do you control his aggression, so he can potentially suicide-rush a handful of units and you likely won't be able to stop it. it's not that he takes damage, because you can reach him with a physic by probably turn 4 or 5. it's that he aggros such a large amount of units that it's a diceroll on whether he'll live to that point. it's very funny that he's an in-universe killing machine but can die to unpromoted units fairly easily, but also aggravating at times. one of my biggest issues with my attempts is that i'd get stuck on a seed where jaffar would just kill himself over and over again and i couldn't do a thing about it. and the funny thing is: i don't recall ever having this issue on past HHM attempts of this chapter. it's really down to how much the RNG likes you, unfortunately, and RNG advancing will unfortunately be your only recourse if it doesn't.
zephiel is easy to save? Wrong, his AI is stupid and will run off of the pillar tiles that give +1 defense and +20 avoid if he takes too much damage, which will essentially doom him. even with WTA, iron axe fighters are coinflip hitting him on regular terrain, mages are hitting him for 5-6 damage, and archers (if they get to him, god help you) will rarely miss. it's a give-and-take situation for him and jaffar because if one gets less aggro, the other one gets more. despite what you may think, i found zephiel getting more of it to be slightly more manageable due to the enemy taking slightly longer to reach him + having established momentum in the chapter helps compared to hoping jaffar plays smart. if zephiel stays on the pillar, then the fighters are much less scary (no one with a swordreaver/slayer should reach him unless you entirely neglect defending him.). it's another situation of "healing him isn't the issue, him survving an entire enemy phase at full HP is". in my successful attempt, i actually had him crit one of the fighters, to my amusement. didn't save any time/damage because a noncrit would've killed anyway, but it was surprising.
ursula is usually a nonthreat due to not moving? Wrong, she starts moving on turn 13 and, if she still has bolting, will almost assuredly kill zephiel if not dealt with (this is actually one of the hhm changes i prefer, tbh). it's kind of gag-worthy that this also means that her AI will definitively not move even if you rush her, which makes her relatively easy to kill if you send a unit with good to even moderate resistance. for most players, this'll likely be a falcoknight, which works out well because all the mercenaries around her can be annoying without WTA and they don't have lancereavers. if you're feeling really cautious, you can send two units after her and secure the kill before she can counter, but it's not strictly necessary if your pegasus of choice is good enough. you could also do something insane like using eclipse with canas but a. eclipse is expensive, why would you use it in a ranked run and b. look i love canas, i really do, but rolling on the floor laughing @ the idea of using him at this point.
you only need one thief for this chapter? Wr- well okay you CAN make it work with one thief, but it is highly in your best interest to have two. there's good steals on the left side, and even base legault can likely steal from the thieves (both can have up to 18 speed, but base legault's is 16~18 whereas the thieves in this chapter are 14~18, so odds are more in your favor there). and this is assuming that somehow matthew didn't end up at 19 speed already, which he hits, on average, by level 14. no, you WANT to steal from the thieves because they have lockpicks and stealing their lockpicks turns them into limp-dick losers who leave the map, which is usually a good thing (shame we can't kill them, but this map is very tight on objectives, so it'd only be feasible to kill them if you really went out of your way to do so, rather than have it be incidental.). really, the absolute biggest reason by far to use two thieves is that it's less for your mounted units to do, who already need to be dealing with the swarm of enemies coming after either jaffar or zephiel. sure, i COULD use only matthew and send him to the right side then use a mounted unit to quickly send him over to the left side and then hope i get him to that luna druid in time to steal his earth seal. or i could just make life easier and drop a unit like raven, who is good but not going to do that much for me in this chapter, and field legault as well. it's peace of mind if nothing else. i'm sure you could route out a way to use only one thief and get the 4 chests + earth seal (hell, maybe even a lockpick if you're daring), and i've even probably done it, but it's just easier to do two.
at least nino's still easy to save right? Wr- okay this one is another halvsies thing because she's the least difficult spinning plate to manage and i never personally had her die, but the monk who goes after her does have a crit chance of like 1 or 2 and can crit for 15 damage. granted her full HP is 19 and she does heal herself with elixirs, so it's not that big of a deal, but i've heard people complain about the dreaded Nino Gets Crit situation play out for them, so i figured it's worth mentioning. but, other than that, nino really is the easiest part of this chapter since the monk and ursula are the only units who would go after her, and you have no reason to not be resolving nino's situation before turn like. idk. 9. no less 13.
okay well there's nothing else to worry about in this chapter right? Wrong, everyone forgets about maxime. but maxime will fuck you up. word is bond, he will FUCK you up. usually he ends up being an afterthought due to being relatively unthreatening on lower difficulties, but HHM stat increases make him skyrocket in threat level. hell, just compare his HP on HNM, which is 40, to HHM, which can be as high as 63. keep in mind his strength/skill/speed can all go as high as 24/23/21 respectively, and he's arguably one of the scarier bosses in all of HHM. the only positive about his situation is that you're dealing with him fairly early, so if he's going to troll you, he'll do it near the beginning of your attempts.
yeah tumblr's getting mad at me so i have to put the rest of this in a pastebin. ENJOY https://pastebin.com/TZT9Dxuc

And Her mother was a famous scientist which was the reason to their family's wealth. You'd think that Ava would have a good life with all this, but she and her siblings were very troubled kids. their father took off the second he first found out their mother was pregnant with them, they were all bullied in school just because they all shared a love for Disney movies, their mom recently had to go on a ten month business trip, Aunnie had gotten in a lab accident and got genetically fused with every type of reptile in the animal kingdom and turned into a reptile girl, and Michael had lost his hand in a car accident and had got bullied so bad for it he tried to kill himself and ended having to be sent away to a mental hospital to get help, so Ava practically lost her brother when that happened, and she didn't take it well at all, she didn't want to go to school and didn't show up to work for a few weeks.

Twisted Wonderland OC Prompts
(Feel free to use any of these as inspiration for potential OC's!)
My Masterlist!
Villains
1: A Mother Gothel inspired character that is a teacher at NRC. They are incredibly sarcastic and give their criticism to students through fake, backhanded, and passive aggressive comments. While they are generally disliked by most of the students they teach, their "personality" barely scratches the surface of the problems they inflict. The also have a son with extremely long hair that they are extremely obsessive over and try their best to keep him with them to feel less alone and old.
2: An Yzma inspired character who is Vil's manager. They have been Vil's manager since he first started his acting career and ,now that he is older, they are slowly starting to feel more hatred towards the young man. They see Vil as some snobbish and picky person that they regret practically raising. So, they are thinking of a small plan with their gym bro coworker to ruin his image a bit.
3: Captain Hook inspired character who is apart of Pomefiore. They are very brutal with his opinions and critiques of others and he is quite intimidating but in reality is a big scaredy cat towards reptiles and big sea creatures. He joined Pomefiore because of his good looks and his passion for famous plays (Vil was a main character in most of them) .
4: A Boogeyman inspired character that is a popular tailor for making glow in the dark costumes out of heavy fabric. He is in Pomefiore and is a very intimidating student because of his dark aesthetics and pretty bipolar personality. He's always gambling with the tweels at the restaurant and always shares his love for bugs with Jade to put in his terrariums. Azul tries his best to avoid him as one Floyd is good enough.
5: Another Ursula inspired character but this time is more based off of her form of Veronica. This character is a sibling or cousin of Azul who got pretty privilege while Azul didn't when they were younger so when things don't go their way, this character will go into a blind rage and hide in their tank in their room to try and not cause lightening and flooding around the school.
Princes/ Heroes
1: A Genie inspired character who is the gym teacher at RSA and was originally Kalim's personal trainer when Kalim was younger and they changed to a teacher once Kalim started College. They still keep in touch with Kalim's family, like that one family friend that still comes over for holidays to spoil the young ones with gifts and roughhousing. He's very energetic and is pretty sarcastic but knows when to step up and get serious when needed.
2: A Mulan inspired character that is a student at RSA and is the top of their classes when it comes to P.E and fencing but has a difficult time focusing when it comes to history or math. So, they try to write answers on their arm but is almost always caught or the ink smudges. They sometimes go under cover to see the physical training at NRC and pretend to be a student their to get in on the aggressive sports that are played their. Vargas knows about this but promised them to keep quiet as long as they don't cause trouble.
3: A Tiana inspired character who has amazing business skills at RSA and is in direct competition with the Mostro Lounge but they try to play nice but they have to bite their tongue a lot. They really aren't a fan of Leona's laziness as he comes to their restaurant since it's pretty peaceful. Most of their interactions consist of them pulling Leona from the couch and trying to get him to eat and cook for himself.
4: A Belle inspired character who is the school librarian at RSA and their father works as the engineering teacher along side them. This character sometimes gifts books to students as gifts during birthdays and celebrations and may or may not have a relationship with a certain teacher from NRC.
5: A Merida inspired character who is a pro archer at RSA but is incredibly mischievous student. They constantly steal desserts from the kitchen, uses inappropriate things (probably Neige/ one of the dwarves with an apple on his head) as target practice, and doesn't focus at all in class. If it wasn't for their parents money, magic, and begging, this character would've been suspended from school a very long time ago. They may or may not try to catch Rook to have an archery competition with him.
