@frankgehry has played a vital role in transforming the slice of Downtown Los Angeles surrounding its Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) into a thriving area for arts and culture. His 2004 Walt Disney Concert Hall proved to be a boon to the neighborhood, and a new project that will break ground in the fall—a mixed-use development just across Grand Avenue—is expected to do the same. Today, the @colburnschool announced that Gehry will design an approximately 200,000-square-foot expansion to its existing facilities, also located on and around Grand Avenue. An environmentally sensitive alternative to the mausoleum, memorial groves—communal plots where cremated remains are buried in paper urns that biodegrade over time—have become a regular part of death rites in Sweden. So, when Askim Church, about 30 minutes outside the city of Gothenburg in the southwestern part of the country, ran out of space in its traditional graveyard, they hired Stockholm-based landscape architect Thorbjörn Andersson of @swecosweden to convert an adjacent ravine into one of these burial grounds.
