So I found this glass bowl outside.. in the trash. I thought it was an oven-safe glass container, in which I could potentially make a casserole, or something equally delicious. It has this interesting flat rim that I haven't seen on glass containers before, and usually these have engraved some sort of logo or brand name on them, but I couldn't find anything like that on this one. Studying it carefully, I only found the letters '22' lightly inscribed on the rim. I compared it to my other oven-safe container, and they're about the same thickness.
Then my roommate came home and I showed it to her excitedly, and first thing to leave her mouth was 'oh it's the washing machine thing!' and I stared at her, then at the bowl. Then I went to the washing machine, and compared them.
Tumblr media
It's almost a complete match. I can't believe this. The found one is a bit smaller, but there are smaller washing machines. The more I looked at it, the more I was sure that it is in fact, a piece of a washing machine. I really found a piece of washing machine outside in the trash?? The number 22 maybe referred to the size of it?
Now I'm pretty sure that it is a piece of a washing machine.. but the curiosity is killing me.. could you still make a casserole in it? I know not all glass containers are the same, and if you put not-oven safe glass in the oven, it could explode, and I do not want to clean glass out of my oven, or deal with the potential consequences. Is there anyone smart enough to know, can this be done? Is it just glass and it can be used in an oven?
If it's not fire-safe, I can still use it as a salad bowl, with added amusement that its original purpose was to enable me to look at the washing machine whirling the laundry around.

Tesoros turísticos de Barcelona - Tresors turístics, Barcelona, 2006.
The cliches of Spain, many of which are from Andalusía and not from Barcelona or even Catalunya. The gitana with a fan is part of the flamenco culture of southern Spain, as are the fans themselves. The wax figure in the interior is presumably Pablo Picasso who was also Andalusian, but he did work in Barcelona for a stretch before decamping to France.
Each time I am in tourist saturated Barcelona I never cease to be amazed by how things from other parts of Spain are peddled as "local." For example, paella is a dish of Valencia, tapas are from Castilla, and flamenco is from Andalusia, proud local food and customs but from other parts of Spain. It as if cedar plank roasted salmon and New England baked beans were offered in Miami along with a floor show of Kansas City jazz but peddled as "local." Barcelona and its neighboring region have a number of food and cultural specialties, but those get lost in the cliched customs assumed by tourists to be generically "Spanish."

L'isola degli uomini pesce (Screamers, 1979)
"Oh, well, I can understand that a scientist like Marvin is ready to give his life for a discovery of this magnitude. But you don't give a damn about science, do you, Rackham? All you care about is the treasure down there, and I'm damn sure it won't be used to promote anyone's research."
"Yes, I'm afraid you're right. I intend to keep it all for myself. Dreadful, isn't it?"
#l'isola degli uomini pesce#the island of the fishmen#screamers#italian cinema#1979#sergio martino#cesare frugoni#luciano martino#barbara bach#claudio cassinelli#richard johnson#beryl cunningham#joseph cotten#franco javarone#cameron mitchell#mel ferrer#eunice bolt#roberto posse#giuseppe castellano#franco mazzieri#known by a dozen different titles and in a number of different forms; i accidentally downloaded the Screamers cut‚ an American version#which cut about half an hour of Martino's film‚ added a newly shot prologue with Ferrer and Mitchell‚ and enhanced some of the#gore fx. I'd rather have seen the og film and will have to get to it eventually‚ but even in bastardized form this was a lot of fun#largely that's down to Johnson's superbly mannered‚ urbane villain. he's clearly having just the best time‚ chewing up the scenery#and being just despicable whenever he's onscreen; a villain for the ages truly. against him is poor Cassinelli‚ having just an awful#time as he goes from disaster to disaster. mix in some human experiments‚ the lost city of Atlantis‚ a heap of treasure and some#stranded convicts and you have a riproaring adventure film that's honestly more Boy's Own adventure than the sloppy sleazy nastiness#I'd gone in expecting (and most of the sloppy nasty that is here was added by the US!). oh and apologies for the slightly risqué picture#I've chosen to end this post with‚ but it turns out there's a whole photoshoot with Bach and the fish men and it's kind of amazing#ok i just read that apparently Johnson rewrote most of his dialogue for this and that only makes me love him more

Did you know Phantom and Rook was inspired by a real life treasure hunt called The Secret?
Tumblr media
The Game is based on a hunt that has been ongoing in North America since 1982, called The Secret.
Byron Preiss hid twelve treasure boxes and the clues to finding them were provided in a book written by Preiss, also called The Secret. In this book are paintings which holds clues, along with written clues. These boxes were placed across the United States and Canada in places that represent events and people that played significant roles in North American history.
Those who discover one of the treasure boxes are entitled to exchange it with Preiss for a precious gem. After he died in 2005, his estate assumed the responsibility of honoring the terms of the treasure hunt.
The painter, John Jude Palencar, has also honored Preiss' wishes and claims he has no knowledge of the actual locations of the treasure boxes, and even if he did, he wouldn't tell anyone.
As far as I know, only three boxes have been found. I first learned about this on the show Expedition Unknown and have always loved the idea of people exploring and engaging in their community all for the sake of discovery.
Hence, the Game in Phantom and Rook.

Last night I was lamenting the loss of the classic Sydney pub, the Hopetoun Hotel, part pictured on right.
Mention also must be made of Johnnie’s Fish Cafe, it used to be on the left where that hideous yellow signage now shouts at you.
I lived around the corner for 15 years and not a week would go by when I wouldn’t share a bottle of red with Johnnie while enjoying a piece of battered fish, chips and a little salad.
