She sees him. At first, she thinks her eyes might be playing tricks on her. She saw him everywhere, everyday for months after he left, but that hasn’t happened for years. Hailey knows those broad shoulders and that resolute stance. There is no mistaking the body she knows as well as her own. She couldn’t forget it if she tried- and God, she tried. For the first time in two years, six months, and twenty-eight days, she sees him.

Hi! This was a mistake in planning on my part, but just a heads up that posting is going to be a little different next week. I will be traveling so I am going to *try* to have the next chapter up on Thursday morning. If you don't see me post on Thursday, that means plans got away from me a little bit and I'll be back the following Friday. Either way, thanks for sticking around!

Swearing Jar || Upstead x daughter

Summary: Sophia is Hailey's and Jay's teenage daughter. She deffends Makayla from some bullys, now she has to pay the price.

This was the first fic I dared to post, I'm so glad I found it!

"Yeah, get out of here, you fucking asshole!"

Everyone at Molly's stood silent when they heard the screeming from outside the bar. The voice of the girl was unmistakable, everyone knew who she was. Hailey and Jay shared a concerned look.

"And don't you dare to even look at her again, you moron!"

It was defenitely Sophia. No doubt.

Hailey and Jay stood up in a hurry to go outside, followed by Adam and Kim, naturally Makayla was with her. From the other side of the bar, a concerned Severide also rushed to help.

"Or other wise you'll have to respond to me, you jerk! And I won't be any gentile!"

That last phrase made Hailey's and Jay's blood run cold. Everything happened so fast. Before they could reach the entrance door, it opened. Will Halstead was leading a furious Sophia and a crying Mckayla inside of the bar. Once the three of them were inside, and before the door closed, Lydia pocked her head out and yelled her last insult.

"Fucker!"

-"Sophia, please! That's enough!" Will took her from the shoulders and turned her inside of the bar.

Molly's was closed to the public that day, there was a party to celebrate Violet's and Gallo's engagement. So Sophia and Mckayla were able to be there along with their parents and friends. The place was full of firefighters, detectives and some doctors from The Med.

All of the guests were shocked looking at the girls, mostly looking at Sophia. They knew she was an impulsive girl, but their faces were showing confusion and concern.

Kim and Adam immediatly ran to hug their daughter. When Sophia raised her head she saw Hailey, Jay and Severaid in front of her, but also Platt, Hermann and Cruz had arrived to the scene. They were in a defensive position, ready to go out to defend the girls. Will raised his hands, saying that everything was ok.

Hailey walked to Sophia, Jay behind his wife. Both of them looking at their daughter straight to the eyes, asking for an explanation with a simple sight.

"-Mom, they were bullying her, ok? They were saying bad things to her and I wasn't going to let them! Not anymore!".

Jay was about to say something, when Kim interrupted without taking her eyes off Makayla.

"-Bullying? Who was bullying her?"

-"Some shitheads from school" -Sophia said right away.

-"Language!" Jay, Hailey and Will said unison, thought their first instinct was to laught.

Everyone at the bar was paying attention to the scene and they couldn't help to laugh a bit. Even Hank Voight smirked a little bit at the girl's reaction. That's when Sophia realized that this wasn't a private conversation.

"-Sorry", she muttered. "Look, I was trying to...protect her..."

-"At least she didn't hit anybody this time" -Mak said in a funny tone. She was feeling better now, surrounded by her loved ones.

-"Yes, because I happened to appear before she did something ~stupid". -Will completed Makayla's tought, which made her laugh.

-"That happened once and it was an accident. I thought we were over it?"

Jay rolled his eyes at her daughter's argument. "Ok. Let's leave this in here for now. We should go back to the party". -He said realizing the attention they were drawing.

-"Yeah, we should go back" Adam reafirmed, looking around.

Hailey hugged her daughter's shoulder and kissed her head, she couldn't deny she was proud of her daughter's grit.

Everyone went back to their seats. When Sophia passed by Severide, he strocked her head as a symbol of affection. He and Stella were very fond of her. Later that day, when Stella arrived from her shift, Kelly told her what happened with the girls and she bursted into laughs: "That girl has been a sassy pants since she was in diappers".

The party continued normally. Everybody seemed happy, having fun. Makayla was dancing and sharing laughts, as if nothing had happened before. Kim and Adam where isolated on a table having a serius conversation, those bully boys were not going to have it easy.

Sophia was seating between her parents at the same table as Will, Severaid and Stella. On the next table Voight, Platt and Mouch were part of the same conversation. Sophia told them how the boys were harrassing Makayla and how she felt the urge to defend her to make it stop. Hank suggested she had the gut to be a cop or maybe even a lawyer, Jay discarded both ideas. Trudy finished the conversation on the matter by saying "You've always been my favorite Halstead".

-"I'm a little bit hungry. Can I go get some pizza?"

-"Sure. Go get a slice and bring some more to me too. I can descount the favor from your new debt to the swearing jar" - Jay said teasing his daughter and then stood up to let her out. Sophia just rolled her eyes. He gave her a mocking smile.

Kim approached to the table in that exact moment, looking for Sophia.

-"Hey, Soph. I just wanted to thank you...I know this is not the first time that you stand for Mack like this, she has told us, so... just thank you. You've been a lot of help for her".

Sophia shrugged in shyness "She's my best friend", she stated reffering that the obvios thing to do was to stand for her friend, sister.

Hailey and Jay had their eyes on their daughter, they couldn't stop looking at her with a proud smile on their faces. The atmosphere was calm and full of love, when Will interrupted the feeling: "You still have to pay the swearing jar, you won't get rid of it".

Sophia abruptly pointed to Makayla and said as a joke: "You owe me like 10 dollars for this".

-"Are you kidding me?" -Jay stared- "You owe the jar like 50 dollars, kiddo".

-"Are you serius!?"

-"Yeah, I'm with your dad in this" -Hailey continued -"Those were really bad prohibited words, sweetie".

-"Yeah, and I only used them for a good reason".

-"Bad words are bad words, and you must follow the swearing jar law". Her father said raising an eyebrow and proceeded to drink from his beer.

Sophia crossed her arms and continued the funny argument "Really? How many criminals have you handcuff by talking to them politely?"

-"She's got a good point" -Trudy said.

-"I'm with her at this" -Voight followed.

They all laught at the silly debate. Those around who listened to the conversation shared some giggles, also because the family dynamic was adorable.

-"All right" -Hailey stood up- "If mom doesn't get the pizza, you two are going to starve, so excuse me".

Father and daughter sat down again, Jay hugging her by the shoulder "I love you, kiddo. I love you so much. You're still paying, though".

Sylvie approach to the table with a bright smile: "That won't be a problem. We all saw what you did, so Violet, Blake, Ritter and I collected some cash for you. Here you have".

-"Geez, thanks!"

-"Pay the jar, and don't you dare to curse ever again, or you'll leave us broke". -Violet yelled from her spot, next to Blake.

-"Straight to the jar" Severaid and Stella threatened.

Hailey came back to the table giving one slice of pizza to her daughter and another one for Jay: "This girl and her mouth...she's going to make us rich, I tell you".

I'm not the biggest Upstead fan simply because I'm not a huge fan of Hailey BUT I just wanted to say that even I was absolutely offended by the systematic destruction of the ship and both characters. I don't know in what world whatever ending Hailey will get will count as a happy ending?! Her happy ending was Jay, she could have quit CPD and gone to live wherever Jay is stationed at or whatever. But this? Unnecessary drama causing BS.........

So I just wanted to say I'm so sorry for you and all Upstead fans because I know this must hurt you a helluvalot more 🥺 virtual hug incoming ❤️

I’ve seen quite a few other fans online who don’t like Hailey or Upstead that have pointed out the bad writing and even they don’t like it. I think it says a lot about how poorly things are being handled on the show when different groups in a fandom who can sometimes be at each other’s throats are now in the same corner standing in agreement together. It’s not a good look to me. Not a good look at all.

Owen screaming Will’s name and running to hug him will never not break me. Like that’s his son, you guys. I’m so happy for Will oh my god. Jay and Hailey are visiting him and Nat in pretty Seattle because I said so, because it’s canon and because it’s Upstead and Manstead forever ❤️

I've just re-read YHBOTHL for the hundredth time and even now, several years later, I just cannot get enough. I've been a fan of PD since S1 but only really got into fandom around S6/7, but I distinctly remember this being the very first fanfic I'd ever read - during the pandemic, at a time when I think a lot of us used fanfic as some sort of escape from the reality of what was going on the world.

When I tell you that this fic healed my soul! It feels like a warm hug. Every single chapter is a masterpiece that I fall in love with more and more each time. The banter, the flirting, the smuttiness, the softness, the emotion, the little details describing the scene, the dialog, them. It doesn't stray from who they are as characters. The way your writing makes me feel everything they feel. It's all just perfect. 

'Home isn't Chicago, or the district, or deep-dish pizza or the wind. Home is Jay' 😭 - This line absolutely melts me every damn time. It just cleanses the soul. And the fact that myself and the majority of the Upstead fandom lose their minds and obsess over this one line in particular and immediately know the context and where it's from just proves how good a writer you are.

It's such a beautiful story! It has the absolute perfect ending, & I'll forever regard it as one of the best PD/Upstead fanfics out there.

I came into PD around that time (after 7 ended and during the extended hiatus) too, and writing that fic was exactly what I needed then - it was amazing leaping into the fandom right at that time.

Reading this really, really makes me miss those days (at least the fic aspect) and Upstead in general.

Anything outside of a happy Upstead reunion that you want for Hailey this season?

 1 - Upwater scenes, as many as possible, the side hugs, the fist bumps, the shoulder squeezes, the calm reassuring presence we know they both need

2 - All the Badass Burton (Burgton? Bupton? Has a conclusion been made yet?) scenes, all of them.

3 - All the good chaos PLATONIC Upzek can cause

4 - Mentor Hailey to Torres

Man it actually sucks so much how much Upstead was screwed up. I thought I could at least go back to old episodes and enjoy them for what they are but now I’m feeling like pre-canon Upstead was the golden years and they squandered so much of their story after they actually got together. Now there’s so many moments I just can’t look at the same way.

Like when I first watched the scene in 9x22 when Hailey said “Where you go, I go” I was filled with butterflies. Now when I watch it I can’t help but fixate on Jay’s reaction to her words. He doesn’t even crack a smile. He almost looks like he’s indifferent to them.

Also in 9x13 after they hug when she returns to the station. After, Hailey doesn’t display any relief or adoration. She just walks away and say “what did the guy desk say” like she’s tired and almost annoyed.

I could go on but it’s just so sad to lose both a ship and the magic you once saw. Your gifs help though so thanks so much.

Yeah....it's really shitty how quickly things took a turn post Gwen-takeover. It's unfortunate. But, they will live on forever in fanfic, and....I think we all know they figure their shit out and end up together in the end!

If it was physically possible I would be hugging each and every one of my Upstead mutuals so tight right now that we can't breathe.

You're all right, this doesn't make sense, it's not rooted in logic and there aren't explanations for this. It did not have to be this way.

But most of all, your feelings are valid. That gut feeling you have is right and don't let what happened on screen make you second guess that. I'm going to repeat what @go-to-two said because it's absolutely true. This is not self-love for Hailey. This is trauma doing its cycle. And it's not a good thing as it stands right now.

In my experience, I've never witnessed a showrunner approve of such blatant character derailment. And also have no justification to fans of why this would be "necessary" (that's in quotations for a reason) or "part of the overall arc". Her silence at this point is deafening.

Unexpected, unplanned and small/private weddings? Those are my type of weeding!

The couple who didn't tell anyone that they were a couple for a long time. The same couple that was so private with their own personal life except with the other...how in the world, that couple, would have a big wedding?

Also, sending you a hug and wishing you were eating something delicious today. Sometimes we need to feel sadness.

Yeah I don't know if people are trying to make upstead fans feel bad or less than because of their wedding but like... that's not gonna happen. Sorry. We're good 😂

I also love a small wedding. I've always said that if I get married, I would want a small, fast ceremony on the beach or at a park and then likely a bigger reception/party.

I had an aunt and uncle who got married in my grandparent's living room. Elton John's The Bitch is Back was playing in the background. Vibes: immaculate. They had one of the strongest marriages I've seen. Different strokes for different folks.

The last pictures is this really from the episode A way out? I can't find the way where he hugs her. Can you help? Or was it a deleted scene?

Yes it was really from the episode, but for some reason it had been cut from the episode. I think we saw it in a promo for the episode, then it aired, and no hug. What I would give to see the extra footage from some of the iconic upstead episodes. Actually, there are a lot of extra footage I would like to see from every character. And the ungodly amount of money I'd throw to see their blooper reels.

As someone who has experienced trauma and for a long time had trauma responses to certain things in my life, I find Gwen’s statement about Upstead’s marriage being a trauma response offensive. People with trauma can fall in love without that being the reason.

First of all, I am so sorry. *VIRTUAL HUGS*

And second, this is a very good point to make and it’s one that not enough people are talking about. It also clearly wasn’t thought of prior to Gwen opening her mouth.

Anyone with a working brain should be able to see how Hailey and Jay’s relationship is the furthest thing from being a trauma response. They were built on a foundation of trust and respect for one another, and saying they’re nothing but trauma and triggers for each other after everything we’ve seen since season five is just so incredibly shitty and disrespectful.

And then on top of that, you have Hailey who is a victim of childhood trauma, who has abandonment issues, who is vulnerable, depressed, and basically on her own again being comforted by another abuser who has lied to her, manipulated her, caused her severe anxiety and a near mental breakdown, who is ultimately just another man she can’t trust.

It invalidates everything she has been through and is yet again, another slap in the face to the character, to Tracy, and anyone watching that relates to Hailey in any way.

*takes deep breath* Ok, now I’m getting pissed off.
