Keeping my earth shattering imposter syndrome at bay, let's talk about my biggest project ever. Which I probably will never complete. But I love to talk about it.

So like I have this story in my head which I call the fantasy book in my head. Its a asoiaf meets bengal kinda thing. I like to call it grimdark, my friend who I narrated the main premise to said "that's straight up horror dude"

But like yk, bengali folklore and our love of ghosts. The main character is a very complex being (not exactly human, at least not anymore.) My main characters humanity, that died before the start of the story, haunts the narrative and the being she is now.

I'm worldbuilding so hard but like, it's genuine fantasy so a lot of ghosts and of course since my Bangladesh is a riverine country, a lot of river related geography and the rivers are characters of their own.

Also this story came to me in a dream on 23rd November 2014. I was chilling in Dhaka as an 8 year old. A lot has changed since then.

Also the main characters family is basically descended from shath bhai chompa. I'm crazy. And it's a huge plot point.

Also a lot of baghs and well a lot of environmentalism. My mc is a product of environmental manipulation. It's basically mother nature sends you as a fuck you letter to the government.

Also, a "spirit" haunts my main character the whole time (like bikrom betal/vikram betal). And then there's the whole body, heart and soul symbolism.

The prologue chapter starts as a putul nach scenario. Honestly will I ever finish this? Probably not. But if I ever do, will it just be me making jabs at my colonisers, the government and every authority figure there is? Yup. Also a lot of indigenous representation cuz Bangladesh sucks at that. Yeah no wonder I'm going insane. Also my main motivation to write this is to be present at the bengali ghost Wikipedia page at the writer's section.

পদ্মজা’র রিভিউ লিখতে গিয়ে প্রথমেই যে ব্যাপারটি নিয়ে ঘোর আপত্তি তুলতে চাই তা হলো, আগা-পাশতলা না দেখে বা পড়ে কাউকে বা কোনো উপন্যাসকে ‘ফেসবুকীয় ট্রেন্ড লেখক বা উপন্যাস’ বলে আখ্যা দেয়ার ব্যাপারখানা। এ যেন পারসেপশন বা প্রত্যক্ষণের উৎকৃষ্ট নজির হয়ে গেল- ‘লোকটি নোয়াখালীর লোক তাই শেয়ালের মতোন ধূর্ত না হয়েই পারে না!’ তবে, সত্যি এটাই যে নোয়াখালীর অনেক মানুষই রয়েছে যারা প্রকৃতই মাটির মানুষ। তেমনিভাবে ফেসবুকের পেজে লিখে যাওয়া সব লেখক বাজে লিখবেন তা তো নয়!

তবে হ্যাঁ, পদ্মজার লেখকের লেখার মানে কিছু সীমাবদ্ধতা রয়েছে যা আমরা গঠনমূলক সমালোচনায় আলোচনা করব। কিন্তু, তাই বলে এই না যে একজন লেখক যে কিনা ফেসবুকে লিখেছেন এবং ফেসবুক ও টিকটক দুটো মাধ্যমকে উপন্যাসের প্রচারণা হিসেবে ধার করেছেন বিধায় মহাভারত অশুদ্ধ করেই বসেছেন। উপন্যাসের কনটেন্ট চমৎকার ছিল এ ব্যাপারটা তো মানতেই হবে।

উপন্যাসের শুরু হয়েছে জেল থেকে। জেলে ফাহিমা নামে একজন নারী পুলিশ ভয়ঙ্কররূপে নির্যাতন করে পুরোই ক্লান্ত অথচ টুঁ শব্দটিও বেরুল না আসামীর মুখ থেকে। ফাহিমার বেলায় এমনটা কখনোই হয়নি, সে ভয়াল নির্যাতনের মাধ্যমে সবসময়ই অপরাধীর মুখ থেকে কথা বের করে নেয়। তার ইমিডিয়েট বস ইন্সপেক্টর তুষার এলে সে বিনাবাক্যব্যয়ে রিমান্ড রুম থেকে বেরিয়ে গেল। যে মেয়েটিকে আসামী হিসেবে জেলের রিমান্ডে উপন্যাসের প্রথম দৃশ্যে দেখা যায়, তার নাম হলো ‘পদ্মজা’।

ইন্সপেক্টর তুষার নির্যাতনের পথে হাঁটল না। তার অনুরোধেই পদ্মজা ঘটে যাওয়া নাটকীয় কাহিনি বর্ণনা করতে লাগল। ১৯৮৯ সাল থেকেই শুরু হয় পদ্মজার জীবন-গল্প।

ইন্সপেক্টর পদ্মজার জীবনের গল্প বলার মাঝখানে কেঁদে দিল, তাতে পদ্মজা হাসল। ইন্সপেক্টর তুষার অনুরোধ করছিল পদ্মজাকে সবকিছু খুলে বলতে। পদ্মজা জবাবে জানায়, সে কাহিনির বাকি অংশ শোনাবে না তাকে কারণ তার বিরুদ্ধের সমস্ত রায় মেনে নিবে ও। সে শীঘ্রি ওপারে যেতে চায়, তাই।

শেষমেশ পদ্মজা ফ্ল্যাশব্যাকে আবারও এগিয়ে যায়। পদ্মজা মাকে হারায় আচমকাই। সে জানতে পারে, মা এমন এক রোগে আক্রান্ত ছিল যার কিনা কোনো চিকি���সা সে সময়টাতে উদ্ভাবন হয়নি! পদ্মজার মা হেমলতা রোগের কথা তাঁর স্বামী ছাড়া সবার কাছেই গোপন রেখেছিলেন। সে কারণেই হেমলতা তাঁর মেয়েকে হুট করে বিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন, অথচ তাঁর ইচ্ছে ছিল পদ্মজা পড়াশুনো পুরো শেষ না করা অবধি তাকে বিয়ের পিঁড়িতে বসাবেন না।
