So, first of all (if anyone is reading this), I am aware that the category/ship tags on this post do not match that on ao3. This is because at the time of posting I had originally wanted to make it clear that the fic would include casual s0kai and s0riku. Since this one was supposed to be the kh series from Riku's pov (with my own reading of the series and filling in of blanks), it was naturally going to involve Riku being casually in love with Sora as well as believing that Sora could only be in love with Kairi rather than implying both ships were intended to be endgame.

I have marked it as gen here on tumblr for now since those ships aren't really the focus of Hero of Darkness and because I would have tagged it differently if I had written it now.

Now, in other news, as of today (10-20-2024), Hero of Darkness is on indefinite hiatus.

Does this mean this fic or the category it's a part of is abandoned? Nope.

In this case, I am just not sure whether I will return to this fic concept or not. If I get a lot of interest or I get the motivation to tackle it again, then I may return to it. If I do return to it, more than likely I will be rewriting chapter 1 as needed (to comform to my new style of writing), redo my tagging, and continue on from there. At that point I will also update this post with any updated info.

However, even if I do not return to this concept, rest assured that this fic will remain archived on ao3.

HyperCard was originally released in 1987 for $49.95 and was then included for free with all new Macs sold. It was withdrawn from sale in March 2004, having received its final update in 1998 upon the return of Steve Jobs to Apple. HyperCard runs in the Classic Environment, but was not ported to Mac OS X.

HyperCard influenced the development of the Web in late 1990 through its influence on Robert Cailliau, who assisted in developing Tim Berners-Lee’s first Web browser. Javascript was inspired by HyperTalk.

Russia's only aircraft carrier, after several problems, finally leaves its dock dry

The operation to remove the aircraft carrier from its dry dock began at the end of last December, but the ship is still far from returning to service.

Admiral Kuznetsov is the only aircraft carrier in the Russian Navy. It has been in repair since 2018 - accompanied by many bankruptcies, bad luck and breakdowns. Now the "Kuznetsov" has water under the keel again. But it will take a long time until the return.

The only aircraft carrier of the Russian Navy, "Admiral Kuznetsov", is no longer on the dry dock. On the morning of February 22, tugs took the 304-meter-long ship out of its dock at Murmansk Ship Repair Plant No. 35, where it had been for repairs below the waterline since mid-2022. This work now seems to be complete.

"The warship successfully left the pier," the factory told the press. However, the "Kuznetsov" is not yet ready for action. The Navy expects the aircraft carrier to return to service in early 2024, at least.

It remains to be seen if this will really happen, because the story of "Admiral Kuznetsov" is, especially in recent years, a saga of problems. The "Kuznezow" was built as the main ship of its class in the 1980s in Ukraine - in Mykolaiv, on the Black Sea, where it was launched into the sea in 1985. The Northern Fleet of the Russian Navy took over the "Kuznetsov" in December 1991 and quickly transferred it from the Black Sea to the Murmansk region, since the government of the newly independent Ukraine had also declared its claim to the ship.

Possibly this venture caused a bad karma. In 1995, the aircraft carrier carried out its first three-month mission. But the few operations that followed were rarely exempt from incidents. Because of its susceptibility to defects, the Navy even provided the "Kuznetsov" with a high-sea tugboat that accompanied it. In 1997, damage to the unit forced the "Kuznetsov" to remain in the shipyard for a long period of time. After that, he stayed at the port most of the time. In 2000, she participated in the rescue of the sunken submarine Kursk and, in 2005, a Sukhoi Su-33 fell from the deck of the "Kuznetsov" in the Atlantic during an operational maneuver.

In early 2009, the “Kuznetsov” lost about 500 tons of oil while sailing on the Irish coast. A few months later, a fire on board claimed the life of a sailor.

The aircraft carrier carried out its first - and so far only - combat mission in Syria in 2016, equipped with a total of twelve Su-33 and MiG-29K. In 2018, he then entered for the first time the huge PD-50 floating dock in Kola Bay, where the first phase of an extensive modernization and repair that had been pending for many years awaited him began.

The update should give the ship another 20 to 25 years of service and should be completed in early 2021. But at the end of October 2018, when Kuznetsov detated, Russia's largest floating dock began to sink suddenly due to a power failure. A 70-ton pier crane fell on the aircraft carrier and pierced the deck, killing a worker. Although it was then possible to tow the heavily damaged ship to the nearby shipyard at 35, as planned, a suitable dry dock large enough to accommodate the "Kuznetsov" had to be created there first.

The aircraft carrier, therefore, remained in Murmansk docked in the shipyard port for three years.

Meanwhile, the work inside the ship continued - and with them the incidents: during the welding work in the machine house, the "Kuznetsov" caught fire again in December 2019 - at least two mechanics died in the flames and about a dozen were injured. Once again, the aircraft carrier suffered serious damage that had to be repaired at great cost. Another fire occurred last December, precisely at the beginning of the preparatory work to distill the ship. This time, however, the fire was quickly extinguished. There was no noteworthy damage, which is why "Kuznetsov" managed to be released successfully about a month later than planned.

It is not yet known how long it will still take for the only Russian aircraft carrier to return to operation, since Russia is engaged in a war in Ukraine and suffers from sanctions imposed by NATO Allied nations.

MY FINAL YEAR IN PITTSBURGH MEGA BUCKET LIST

I AM MOVING! FINALLY! Well, I just know I need to move...relatively soon. I started my graduate program in the Fall of 2019 and plan on walking my Black ass up out of my program the Spring of 2024. For some context into how American PhDs work - you have two or three years of coursework and then you fuck around and do some shit until you are ready to leave. I'm in my "fuck around" stage right on the precipice of my "and find out" once I leave my program with bigger tits, bigger checks, and the biggest BAG! By the end of 2022, I'll have a little less than 2 years left to snatch up my PhD and even less to make my way out of my home in Pittsburgh and on to new horizons for 2023. You see I want to be settled in my new home prior to defending my dissertation. Cause a bitch loves comfort.

So to my calculations I have roughly a year's worth of time left to lallygag in my current home before I'll have to start to pack it on up. One more year of intentional exploration in the City of Bridges. One more year.

And what a year it has been. I barely scraped the surface of the entirety of this list when I originally wrote it. I wish I could have added Spak's, Bottlerocket Social Club, Steel Carabiner at Blue Moon Bar, Drag Brunch at 5801, Maker's Night at Assemble Studios, artsncraftspgh botanica shop, Red Fish Bowl Studios, Allies Ball, and White Oak Dog Park. I'll never be able to summarize entirely my feelings towards Pittsburgh. Instead, I'll continue to work on the narrative. My address may no longer be in Pennsylvania but a piece of my heart lives in East Pittsburgh. Nothing will ever taste as good as a vegan philly cheesesteak from Spak. No one can throw a party like Black people from Homewood. And no one can make you feel as good as the local ladies at a Pittsburgh laundromat.

While my address will no longer be in the commonwealth - a piece of my heart is cemented in the streets of the burgh'. See yinz soon!

Cultural Context

The first Korean comfort woman to speak out about her enslavement was Kim Hak-soon. (1) She opened the door for other women to share their stories and bring shame to the Japanese government. Literature like One Left raises an important discussion surrounding comfort women, as it showcases what they were subject to as well as the long term impacts on their lives.

Even today there are still crimes being committed against women regularly. In Korea's patriarchal society, with a misogynistic president in Yoon Suk-Yeol, there is a common sentiment of anti-women and anti-feminism. The Minister of Gender and Family announced that he wanted to update the legal definition of rape, which didn't include non-consensual relations. (2) When women go to report their assault to the police, they are faced with scrutiny, often being accused of lying and even refusal by the officers. There were initiatives to create special teams to lessen this problem, each team having at least one woman, but there is such a lack of women police officers that these teams were unable to be made. (2)

At the time of comfort women, the Korean Peninsula was united, meaning that North Korean women were also subject to kidnapping and sexual violence. These days, North Korean women are often assaulted by men in high-ranking positions. Because these men have the power to ruin the women's lives, their victims are unable to report their abuse. They will leave the women jobless and outcasted from society, or even incarcerated. (3) Sexual abuse is so common in North Korean society that it has come to be accepted as a part of daily life. It is perpetrated by officials, police officers, and even husbands and partners.

North Korean women are also facing sex trafficking in China. They are kidnapped or coerced into sex work while defecting, and comply out of fear of being sent back. Some women are even abducted from North Korea directly. (4) They are imprisoned in brothels in Northeastern China, forced into marriage and raped by their husbands, and involuntarily do cybersex work. In the case of cybersex work, many of the subscribers are from South Korea, displaying a continuously misogynistic society. (4)

It is precisely situations like this that make books such as One Left so important. It tells the true stories of women in a society that does not want to believe them. It outlines the offenses they face as well as the lasting effects of the trauma in their lives.

Historical Use of Asbestos in UK Construction

Asbestos was widely used in the UK construction industry from the 1950s to the late 1970s, prized for its fire-resistant properties, durability, and insulating capabilities. The mineral's versatility made it a popular choice for both residential and commercial construction projects. Notable buildings such as schools, hospitals, and government offices incorporated asbestos-containing materials extensively. The peak of asbestos use coincided with the post-war building boom, where its properties aligned perfectly with the rapid construction needs of the time. However, as health concerns began to emerge in the 1970s, its use gradually declined. The UK banned the use of blue and brown asbestos in 1985, with white asbestos finally prohibited in 1999. This historical usage has left a legacy of asbestos-containing materials in many buildings constructed or refurbished before 2000, presenting ongoing challenges for the modern construction industry in terms of identification, management, and safe removal.

Health Risks for UK Construction Workers

UK construction workers face significant health risks from asbestos exposure, particularly those involved in renovation, demolition, or maintenance of older buildings. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that asbestos-related diseases claim approximately 5,000 lives annually in the UK, with a significant portion attributed to the construction sector. The primary health risks include mesothelioma, a cancer affecting the lining of the lungs or abdomen; asbestosis, a chronic lung condition; and lung cancer. These diseases typically have a long latency period, often manifesting 20-50 years after exposure. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 significantly impacted the UK construction industry, setting stringent standards for asbestos management. These regulations, which came into force on 6 April 2012, consolidated and updated previous asbestos legislation. Key provisions include the requirement for non-licensed work to be notified to the relevant enforcing authority, keeping a record of the work done, and ensuring medical examinations for workers. The regulations place a duty on those responsible for maintenance of non-domestic premises to identify and manage asbestos-containing materials. This includes conducting asbestos surveys, maintaining an asbestos register, and implementing an asbestos management plan. If found, only licensed contractors can remove high-risk asbestos-containing materials.
