Fast Fashion to Slow Fashion :: a DIY guide to up-cycling and mending clothing on a budget.

For those of us living on a small income, buying from sustainable fashion brands is often out of reach. I would like to point out that *buying new but ecological garments isn't the only way to cultivate a slow fashion wardrobe*. Here are a few options for transforming *upcycling* your clothing, thus making fast fashion into slow fashion:

Mend and repair :: patch hand-me-down sweaters, fix holes in leggins from target and other department stores. By giving items a longer life, and preventing unnecessary garbage, fast fashion items become slow fashion! Here are two tutorials I have written on how to mend a torn belt loop on jeans and patch leggings.

Up-cycle clothing that doesn't suit your style :: when preparing for a trip back home and wondering how to acquire some nicer clothing for the trip a friend of mine gifted me a big bag of clothes. Almost all of them were items that we could call "fast fashion" and nearly all also had stains or rips that needed mending. By fixing and adapting these items and then going on to wear them for several years longer, I am keeping them out of the cycle of buy then trash.

Tailor items that don't fit you :: Taking in clothing is quite simple and there are lots of tutorials on how to hem pants and skirts or take in a size or two. I recently made a tutorial on how to take out a skirt, or make a skirt bigger by adding panels.

At some point, we must face the fact that a t-shirt is totally worn out and cannot be used for clothing any longer. In such cases here are a couple of crafts to utilize the fabric and other items from the scrap pile:

Create a Quilt :: if you find yourself with a pile of beautiful & memory-filled scraps -- transform them into a quilt as I have done in this post.

Make Twine :: Longer scraps of fabric, especially those from stretch materials like leggings or jersey cotton t-shirts can be made into a thing rope also known as fabric twine. I wrote a tutorial on how to make twine out of fabric scraps.

I actually planned to cosplay Mabel Pines for Halloween. I just officially started on the 1st of Sept.

What I will be crocheting:

I have to break it to you. I'm not making an actual sweater. It's more like a loose long sleeve crop top. I don't know how that girl does it, but I live in a tropical country. It's bloody hot. Yarn is hot. I made an actual sweater, and it has only seen the light of that TWICE. And that second time I had to take it out half-way because the weather got too hot. I'm trying not to overheat and also have my crochet apparel projects being able to see the light of day okay.

BOOM. Progress and the colour scheme. Oversaturated and I like it. I honestly have no pattern; I am just winging it. The width is 63 stitches, and I use a 5mm hook. I have used 2 and a half skeins so far. I need to go back to the store and get more pink honestly.

The shooting star is an applique and going to be sewn onto the pink base.

It will be a low cut, and I'll do the collar ribbing in a different colour. The sleeves are not going to be entirely pink. I want it to be flared mesh sleeves

day one of attempting to make circles following tutorials did not go well, I must have tried a dozen times then I learned the magic loop and made the red and white mess that was gradually turning into a square.

the next day, I decided to stop trying to follow video tutorials and just go on instinct. I made a hat, which wasn't a surprise given that i'd seen many tutorials titled "how to avoid your circle turning into a bowl". Ta Da - this is the first 'thing' made in crochet!

i'd like to practice some more, learn some more stitches, then make

1- a doll skirt using Andrea's aunt's technique of free handing on a correctly sized piece of elastic

2- and then start practising cuffs: I am a short gal with long limbs: tubby belly means most trousers fit without having to hem them but jumpers (sweaters) often leave me with a little bare wrist unless I buy oversized. I've regularly had to send back cute mail order jumpers because these monkey arms don't fit. My entire wardrobe is oversized but one day I'd like to be able to order a jumper, find it too short in the arms but crochet on an extension in a yarn that that blends nicely and keep it.

That's the dream: doll clothes and cuffs, maybe find cool ways of turning electric plastic coated wires into stars and hearts because i've always loved upcycling electrical waste but yeah. back to practising... when there's time.

A list of possible resources (disclaimer most if not all of these are not cheap but are small queer owned business and most donate to a variety of important causes so check out their about pages):

Both & Apparel : made for transmascs by transmascs it might be worth having a few staples from them (I would lean towards the tank top and the crop top and a pair of pants personally but obviously up to you) they're mostly plain which makes it easy to accessorize

GenderFreeWorld : again made by and for queer people (as well as for cis straight people because as the name suggests, the gender shouldn't matter, the fit, style, and your comfort should). Some of their shirt patterns are definitely giving the 80's bowling alley carpet vibe though! They have also done some collaborations with Both&

Mars Wright : also made by and for trans people. He sells art as well as clothing but I think the patterns will fit the vibe you're going for at least somewhat. Many of these designs are out and proud trans designs so that's important to remember if you're closeted or stealth.

The Rainbow Store : for queers by queers. Includes both subtle and loud pride designs in a variety of styles and identities. Encourages customers to reach out if their identity isn't represented so that they can make a design that makes them feel represented. They also have a blog with useful tips for dressing particular ways and brands that work well for those styles

Hope and Harmony : this is a decidedly more femme resource but has some really cute shirts with bold and powerful pro-queer statements (I particularly love the pink triangle design)

Wildfang : these guys are more expensive than the others on the list but they have a huge variety and are certified climate neutral!

Kingdom : most of their stuff is upcycled! Their genderfree clothes especially feel like they fit with the vibe you're aiming for I think

The queerest gear : lots of patches and buttons that would be fabulous for a battle/patch jacket or crust pants. Also some tees and sweatshirts

Lonely kids club : most of their stuff reads like a tumblr shitpost please just check it out

MegEmiko : cute sweaters and tees!!!

Flavnt : a lot of these word work well with the punk vibe but some are a bit softer

The phluid project : check out their genderfree stuff please!!! You will not regret it!!!

Rodeoh : definitely a more explicit resource but check out their ftm guide for information on binding/taping/packing and more!

Lastly! For the punk part I highly recommend looking up diy tutorials for making patches, patch jackets, crust pants, spikes, jewelry, etc. It's always cheap and it the most authentic punk out there! Try to learn hand sewing! Dye things or bleach them! Add spikes to a thrifted jacket! I like to mix in cheap or thrifted band tees! I'll wear lipstick and eyeliner with a masc outfit for a femme flair or all black except I bright pink accessory!

Layers things! Wear them in ways them weren't meant to be worn (if I had a nickel for every time I put a skirt over my head to be a shawl/poncho instead and people loved it, I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice) create unusual silhouettes and most importantly don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do!

Also, definitely check out @genderpunks it has a lot of awesome stuff on their blog and in hir shop and I bet you could shoot him an ask to see what other resources they might recommend!!!

I'm in the process of transitioning as a transmasc person and I DESPERATELY want to have a cute wardrobe but the thing is I have NO fucking clue how to style an outfit for my body type and general aesthetic

Google and pintrest have been supremely unhelpful when I'm looking for something vaguely along the lines of "fashion for a queer transmasc person leaning slightly on the feminine side but punk and also maybe along the same vibe as an 80s bowling alley carpet but maybe also some softer more pastel and casual stuff and it has to fit and look good on my dumpy little oompa-loompa body that has more torso than leg and fucked up hip bones that jut up too high"

Upcycling sweaters

Sometimes you're stuck with a sweater you just don't wear any more. Maybe it shrunk or became felted in the wash, or maybe you outgrew it. When this happens, there's a variety of ways you could upcycle your sweater into something new.

Knitting:

Do you like knitting? One way to recycle your sweater is to unravel it into a skein of yarn. This way, you can reknit your sweater into a garment you actually wear. This process takes a lot of patience, but if you particularly like the material your sweater's made from, it's well worth it.

Refashioning:

If your sweater has become too small, you could try to upsize it by adding in extra pieces of fabric. You could knit your own, use scrap fabric, or sacrifice a second sweater to cut out panels or gores from.

Sweaters that are too big are pretty easy to downsize, too. If your sweater's made of a natural fibre, you could try shrinking it in the wash. Otherwise you'll have to tailor it. Add in darts with the ladder stitch, or resize the sides by using a fitted sweater as a template.

Your sweater doesn't have to stay a sweater! If the shoulders bother you, then remove the sleeves and turn it into a sweater vest. Chest too tight? Cut open the front and turn it into a cardigan. Top not fitting right? Cut off the bottom and make yourself a skirt or a pencil skirt.

Reusing:

There are many ways to upcycle a sweater. In the end, your sweater is just fabric/yarn in a sweater-shape. You can reuse it however you want. Here are some ideas to get you started:

We are all looking for new content to watch, and content on the sustainability front can be kind of lacking, especially when it comes to black and brown creators. So let’s look at some awesome creators that you should subscribe to!

Sustainable Brown Girl

I have been following her Instagram for awhile, but just recently found her YouTube page, where she posts her podcast. It is sad that she does not get nearly enough views on her channel, but let’s see if I can help with that a little by giving her some more views!

Sustainable Brown Girl is a podcast run by Ariel Sahar. She does an amazing job, and talks to a wide variety of sustainable black women, such as business owners, people who work with companies, and more! Definitly worth checking out!

Colleen G Lea

Colleen is an awesome YouTuber and seamstress! I was awed by her ability to upcycle garments in new and creative ways, such as making a sweater into a tote bag. She also has a ton of videos on her YouTube page talking about how to sew tutorials, fabric and thrift hauls, and upcycling tips and tricks.

She is a seamstress and a certified fashion designer. A lot of her videos also help with things like pattern drafting, which we all know can be a bit tedious. I also love how her hair is graying, but she still rocks it! Give you a check out as well.

BluePrint DIY is made by Angelina. Angelina is a woman with a ton of personality, and is so creative! I have never seen anyone upcycle and style clothes the way she does! Her tagline in all of videos is “where we make our clothes to be just as unique as we are!“ and she delivers every time! I love to watch her videos due to her creative, and the fact that she reminds me so much of my mother-in-law, and both women are awesome!

Her most recent video shows her making 2 skirt and top combos entirely out of 2 seperate trench coats, and they look wonderful! Check her out as well!
