The heat of New Jersey summers was no joke. The passing of a nonexistent breeze swept through the field. Beads of sweat glowing off of the foreheads of the Lady Yellowjackets as they bolted around the box. Swarming. You were a natural leader, falling into your role as co-captain easily. Although you and Jackie had quite different ideas of the perfect “high school experience”, you got along well enough. You were going on hour three of practice and everyone was feeling it. The fifteen minute break felt like years ago as Coach Ben finally called out to the team to bring it in. June was never an easy month. Conditioning and scrimmages lined up one after the other. Overworked and tired there was one thing that grounded you during the summer season. Vanessa Palmer. The one and only. Their long red hair pulled back in a braid as they trotted up to meet the rest of the team. Your eyes drifted from Ben to their sweaty form as they took a knee beside you. They flashed a quick tired smile once they noticed your stare and then proceeded to listen in to the Coach’s words intently.

“Good work today girls,” Coach Ben smiled down at the team with Misty, who stood grinning in a pair of overalls with a large white splotch of SPF on her nose.

“This team has real potential to push us all the way to nationals. I know it was a tough loss to miss out on last year,” The memory bitter in your mouth, “-but I have a good feeling that we can make it past semi-finals with a group like this!” As his words began to fade into the background of your mind the memory sunk in. Last season the team had lost their qualifying game by a single point. You had watched as the silence ensued. Taissa was livid with herself and her team. Laura Lee reached out in an attempt to help multiple times only to be shot down repeatedly. You being mostly internal about your disappointment, comforted people with silent shoulder pats, while Lottie stayed silent and avoided the reassurance you tried to place on her, and then there was Van. They had walked into the locker room last. Written on their face was an emptiness they couldn’t hide. Normally Van was the first to pick everyone up after a loss, providing a feeling of hope. Now with Jackie being the only one trying to rouse the troops, you seemed to be the last one noticing their downward spiral. It was a close game. One point is worse than losing by a landslide, because there’s a what if. What if we had made just one more goal, what if that play would’ve worked out, what if- that’s when it hit you. Van was doing the same thing. Instead now they were no doubt thinking about what could’ve happened if they had saved that one shot. Or not have let any in for that matter. Your jersey was torn off of you prior to your revelation and your socks were uneven as you turned to walk towards Van’s locker hall. Slowly coming to the corner you knocked briefly on a locker and turned to face them. Their head in their hands you walked closer to sit beside them. In those moments you spoke about anything but the game. The upcoming year, your schedules, the fucking weather. Anything so that you could see the light be brought back to their face. Only once you mentioned that you were seeing the new movie ‘Pulp Fiction’ that coming November did their eyes light up. Immediately, they widened their gaze and began rambling about Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino. Although they were rather lost in their own world, you smiled. You knew then the plans were set. You would see this movie together. You would see this movie with Van and learn anything and everything that made their eyes sparkle like this so that they never stopped.

Your recollection was cut short as Coach Ben turned his gaze to you moving a hand out.

“I think you’ve heard enough from me so captains, would you like to add anything?��

You looked up at him feeling a little flustered in the moment, “Oh, I mean- I think that everyone is doing a great job.” You saw a teasing grin from beside you at your unsteady acknowledgments. “Rookies I am loving the energy you are bringing to this team- and I am so excited to share this season with all of you.” You ended your pep talk with a dorky fist pumping the air slightly. Jackie joined in as well saying a few words about how this year would be great and blah blah blah- Your eyes drifted from her to Van once again. This time they had been looking at you as well. You shared a knowing grin and looked away shaking your head. A smile still gracing your face as Coach dismissed you.

Van mimicked your fist pump from earlier and you smacked their arm away immediately, earning a cackle from them. “Oh shut up,” You laughed out moving to walk towards the locker room. “Wow lady, I didn’t say anything!” They fiend innocence, raising their hands in defeat. “You didn’t have to,” You rolled your eyes still grinning as Van caught up to your pace. Your shoulders knocking into one another as you walked. “So how is your day going.” You turn your head slightly to glance over at them. “It’s been alright,” Van looked over at you a grin rising on their face, “I ate shit earlier,” they held out a finger as they spoke counting their achievements, “-and I’m drenched in sweat,” another finger was outstretched, “-and my girlfriend hasn’t kissed me in weeks-“ You scoffed rolling your eyes once again as they put that same hand to their forehead in agony. Letting out a fake sob you laughed.

“You’re such a dork.” You giggle at their antics. Shoving their shoulder lightly as you two find your way to the school doors walking briskly into the locker room.

The two of you changed in separate areas like you always had. You standing next to Jackie and Shauna while Van’s locker hall was near the back. It was never a question that you two couldn’t really open up about the relationship to the team. Although a sad reality, you both knew it to be safer and easier this way. There were suspicions you were sure, but no one here said anything about them. As the team began to file out you came out of your brisk shower, clothes changed with your hair damp. Walking back to your section you placed your dirty uniform, socks, and shoes inside. This was routine by now. After you had finished your system you walked back to Van’s row to find them with a magazine open, leaning on the lockers behind them.

“A week really is such a long time,” You watched as they turned to meet your eyes, smile widening as you grew closer to them. Although it hadn’t been more than four days since you had last seen one another, it felt like years to both of you.

“I think we need to make up that time, don’t you?” They questioned, a sly grin set on their freckled face. You came close enough to bring your arms to their hips. Looking down at their soft sweatshirt and wavy hair.

“I can’t argue with that..” Your words were lost as you lent down to press your lips to their’s. The familiarity immediately comforting the stress and worries of last year’s season. Tossing them out of your mind. Slowly their hands made their way to your shoulders gripping slightly at the back of your neck. Deepening the kiss you pressed your chest to Van’s and brought a singular hand up from their hip to their jaw, guiding them. Moments like these made all of it worth it. The waiting and the pining and the sneaking, all for just the taste of their breath every couple days. On the off chance you were able to have Van over, it was worth it solely for the ability to hear a small ‘I love you’ slip from their lips. Now in this room it was just the two of you able to hear your shared breathing. Slowly, you broke away as the air fought for its place in your lungs. They brought their head to the side as you trailed soft kisses down their neck. Peppering nips and flush breaths to their mandible. Slowly dropping the hand from their jaw and bringing it to their side once again. The sliver of skin, exposed on their stomach due to their hands being brought over your shoulders, was traced repeatedly with your thumb. Once again they guided their lips back onto yours. Biting softly at your bottom lip and allowing their tongue to trace your own. Gripping at the base of their hair allowed you to control the kiss completely.

When all of this sneaking around had started, you had just recently gotten out of one of the hardest games of the past season. Your priorities to win and your passion for the sport slipping out as you addressed the team. “That was some of the best work i’ve seen from this group.” You grinned, “Now don’t get cocky,” you warned, “Winning one game won’t win us the season.” A collective groan was let out and disagreements were shared but you laughed off the chaos.”Okay, okay..” You sighed. “It’s not for nothing,” Smile playing on your lips as you looked up to see faces so bright and happy. “-we’re going to semi-finals bitches!” You raise your hands laughing openly as cheers erupted and hollers were shared. Music was turned on at some point and you stayed content for a while in that moment before moving back to your section of the changing room. What you hadn’t felt was Van watching you. Every movement you had made. If there was one thing Van found attractive it was drive. They loved the people who knew what they wanted. So as Van followed you back to your section you weren’t expecting to see them. Your corner was towards the back adjacent to Van’s. Jackie and Shauna had been singing with the group and celebrating. Van and you had hung out repeatedly after that first talk. You had seen that first movie, and then had gone to see several since. Every time your crush growing more and more unavoidable. When you turned to see Van you expected a joke or a question or a congratulations on your game winning goal; instead, your lips locked. Your first instinct was to push away. Only briefly did you separate before you returned the kiss more aggressively gripping their jersey collar. You heard the padding of feet and this time Van separated you both and took a step back. Jackie and Shauna came into view laughing and barely acknowledging the two of you who were now facing each other with your breathing slightly altered. Van muttered something to the effect of “Thanks for the advice.” and walked to their section.

Ever since then this was the new normal. Finding one another in these moments and being able to enjoy each other outwardly. Van’s lips moving in sync with your own. A push to your chest had you sitting on the bench that divided the locker walls. Van moving to stand between your legs and lace a hand through the hair at the base of your neck. Slowly moving your lips to their’s, a soft noise was released from your throat at the feeling of a slight tug. Your hands found their hips and your thumbs traced lazily. When you broke away you and Van looked into each others eyes for a while, your gaze only being broken by singular loving pecks.

“You know, it would be nice to take you on a real date.” You smiled at their idea. “What would that entail?” Their eyes looked above you jutting their lip out in thought as their head was set crooked to one side. “Maybe to dinner or on a picnic to the drive-in?”

“Vanessa Palmer you romantic!” You smacked their upper arm as they groaned and went to pull away from the embrace. Quickly though you brought your hands up to lay on top of their shoulders and kissed them softly. “I would love that.” You both proceeded to smile at each other like absolute idiots for a while.

“Your dad is going to kill you if you don’t hurry up,” They give a careful reminder pressing soft kisses to your cheeks. Quickly they remember their own mother waiting outside. “Oh shit,” They break away grabbing their things and coming back to place one last kiss on your lips. “My mom might genuinely skin me if I don’t hurry up.” A sympathetic smile graced your face and you gave them a chaste kiss on the cheek. As they walked away you called out one last thing,

“Don’t forget we have conditioning at 12 tomorrow!” You grin at their hurried jog.

“Aye-aye Captain!” Van saluted as they briskly stepped out through the locker room doors.

I enjoyed it, even if I have to go to my favorite theater with a bunch of obnoxious Tarantino fans and deal with his navelgazing pre-movie bullshit now.

Instead of showing trailers for upcoming movies, they show old movie trailers. Tonight it was Terminator, Vice Squad, and something called Hardcore. And there was another stupid weird cartoon. The theater also only shows 35 or 70 mm prints now so if a new film doesn’t provide that, it won’t be shown. So, Tarantino effectively took away a local neighborhood theater that families have gone to for decades to make the New Beverly East. Silver Lake is pretentious enough. Now this.

Anyway, the actual movie was good and gory (but not *too* gory). Mia Goth is a smokeshow and a good actress.

WITHIN TEMPTATION Releases New Single 'Ritual'

Dutch metallers WITHIN TEMPTATION have released their brand-new single "Ritual". The song is the focus track of their upcoming eighth studio album, "Bleed Out", due out on October 20.

Reflecting the tumultuous state of the world, for their newest record the band have drawn inspiration from events such as the murder of Mahsa Amini in Iran and the war in Ukraine. But that isn't to say that there's no light to the heavy shade on "Bleed Out".

"Bleed Out" signifies a bold leap forward for the band. From contemporary, hard-hitting, and djenty riffs to soaring melodies displaying their symphonic roots, WITHIN TEMPTATION has created a sonic journey that fuses diverse musical styles and thought-provoking themes. Tasked with a diplomatic opportunity, Liam flies to Rome for a summit with Francesco and officials of the Italian parliament.

-15.1-Life Goes On, 8/30/24 It’s graduation night for Maxwell and during the evening, the venue is attacked by the “Sons of Earth”, an anti-monarchist terror group. After being alerted, Liam rushes home to Cordonia from an Italian political summit.

-2-The Sacrifice, 8/26/23 Riley is reunited with Maxwell, as Daniel attempts to lift Riley from her feelings of melancholy at Club Kismet. Liam meets with Olivia in Lythikos searching for another perspective on the night of his coronation and his father's transgressions against her and Riley. Madeleine discloses a secret.

Did you see the announcement that Adam is going to be in Heat 2 with Michael Mann again? What are your thoughts on that? Do you have any dream team directors you would like to see him work with? I wish he’d do the Chloe Zhao Dracula movie!

HI! Sorry it took me a while to get to this.

I did hear the Michael Mann announcement, and all AD movie announcements are definitely good news to me! I've never been super impressed with Mann as a director and I have disliked all of his movies that I've seen, which admittedly aren't all of them. I'd be very happy if he did a Last Mohicans 2 and let AD have long hair and run around shirtless for 2 hours fucking people up with a hatchet, but Heat 2 isn't really blowing my skirt up. In all fairness, I've never Heat 1 so now I need to. I'll see how he looks in it before I get too excited lol. I made that mistake with Megalopolis by getting super excited over an upcoming movie only to have my hopes crushed when the first pics leaked. Megalopolis now falls under the same category for me as White Noise - I'll watch it, but I'm going to bitch the whole time, and need a Jacques and Mills mental palette cleanser afterward!

I haven't see a Chloe Zhao movie, so I can't weigh in on her as a director. But I have heard the Dracula rumors and how it's supposed to be a Dracula Western and omfg I would love that!! That would definitely be on my dream list of AD movies. However, I personally speculate that with the new stupidly fun looking Nic Cage Dracula movie coming out, AD will not want to take a Dracula role. Which is really too bad. But I think he likes to be more original than that. I'd love to be wrong though!

Here are the directors I'd love to see him work with! The first three are my top three in order, then they're just random as they came into my head.

Chad Stahelski aka the John Wick director! AD needs to be the next John Wick! Or a bad guy in a John Wick movie! Or anything similar! Absolutely one of my dream roles for him! The John Wick movies are favorites, complete with some of the best action around, hot and well dressed men, gorgeous cinematography, and kick ass music. I love them! AD in a John Wick sort of role and all the things that are bound up in that get my #1 vote!

Quentin Tarantino. I have my fingers crossed that AD will be in his upcoming movie! That would be a dream for me! Inglorious Basterds, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Django Unchained, and Deathproof are some favorites of mine. AD really has to get Tarantino on his punch card for the best directors out there, and I really hope he doesn't miss the opportunity to work with him.

Clint Eastwood. Preferably in a western playing a scruffy cowboy with facial scars! I love Clint Eastwood and he's so good and genuine with creating rugged manly men. I grew up watching his movies and loving them all and I still do. Unforgiven, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and Two Mules for Sister Sara are favorites of mine.

Robert Eggars. I would actually bet that AD will team up with him at some point because they’re both young and have plenty of time to do so, and they both like strong talent and making dark weird things. They’re meant for each other! I personally want another hyper masculine role like Northman. I would kill to see AD in something like that! They could even repeat the naked volcano fight and I wouldn't mind at all!

Tim Burton. Gorgeous movies with great occult vibes! AD would be perfect to play a dark disturbed Victorian dude!

Guy Richie. Great action, great characters, hilarious dialogue. His movies are all a blast!

Kenneth Branagh. HIs movies are so beautiful! I'd kill for AD to have been in Death on the Nile! That would have kept my adventurer vibes going for years! Any intelligent, beautifully filmed, period murder mystery would be great by me.

Guillermo Del Toro. Another director who does beautiful and dark so well! Weird, macabre, and a match made in heaven!

Ridley Scott. In another period movie! By making him so unbelievably hot as Jacques and letting him lean fully into his hotness, Ridley is now one of my all-time favorite directors! He was in my favorites anyway and I love so many of his movies, but that gave him an extra boost! Ridley did two awesome period movies with Russell Crowe. They actually did five movies together total - three of them were great and one was even a romantic comedy! Ridley owes the same with AD as a minimum! He's another top tier choice for me for another period piece or an epic.

After Cocaine Bear, Elizabeth Banks gets my vote for the woman director he should work with first! That was so much fun and I would love to see AD in a campy action/horror comedy where he could do dark physical comedy.

These next three would never happen, but it’d be so much fun!

Gore Verbinsky. Some first rate adventure like Pirates of the Caribbean! I love those moves so much!

Stephen Sommers. The Mummy and Van Helsing are some of my all time favorites and anything similar would be a blast with him!

Baz Lurhman. I don’t actually like a lot of his movies, but they’re all SO gorgeous and he lets his men be hot! AD needs to make more pretty movies! Baz took my second favorite, Hugh Jackman, and gave him his hottest role ever in the western Australia. It was hard to top Wolverine, but Baz did it!

I actually feel super lucky and very happy that two of my dream roles for him he’s already done, and even luckier that they’re the two where I find him the absolute hottest! A badass knight and a rugged action hero!

I'd love to know who everyone else has on their dream list of directors if anyone wants to weigh in!

i don't know if there's been any news on that, looking up supposedly anticipated shows:

On the TV side, acclaimed HBO and Max series, including "The Last of Us," "Euphoria," "House of the Dragon," "Hacks" and "The White Lotus," have been pushed back to 2025 and beyond or removed from the release calendar altogether. Highly anticipated shows such as the upcoming "Game of Thrones" spinoff "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight" and "The Batman" spinoff "The Penguin" are now undated.

i could see him being given a minor role in something, but stunt casting in TV shows is often worse than in the movies and makes fans much more angry. remember ed sheeran's appearance on game of thrones? he's honestly a horrendous actor, so anything they put him in has to be minor and something that won't distract from the entire project.

'Christopher Nolan recently told the “ReelBlend” podcast (via CinemaBlend) that he understands Quentin Tarantino’s decision to retire from feature filmmaking after his upcoming 10th directorial effort, titled “The Movie Critic.” Tarantino has spoken for years about his plan to retire, saying he wants to leave behind a consistently strong and tightly curated body of work.

“And do you believe him?” Nolan asked the podcast hosts regarding Tarantino’s planned retirement.

There’s no reason not to believe Tarantino at this time. Every time he’s dropped details about his next movie, “The Movie Critic,” he has reminded fans it will be his last directorial feature while also stressing that just because he is retiring from filmmaking doesn’t mean he can’t write books, plays, television series and more. Tarantino bringing his filmmaking career to an end in his 60s is a contrast to a filmmaker like Martin Scorsese, who is releasing “Killers of the Flower Moon” at age 80 later this year.

“The truth is, I understand both points of view,” Nolan said when asked if he wants to take Tarantino or Scorsese’s route. “It’s addictive to tell stories in cinema. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very fun. It’s something you feel driven to do, and so it’s a little hard to imagine voluntarily stopping.”

Nolan continued, “But I also see… Quentin’s point has always been that — and he never, very graciously, he’s never specific about the films he’s talking about or whatever — but he’s looking at some of the work done by filmmakers in later years and feeling that if it can’t live up to the heyday, it would be better if it didn’t exist. And I think that’s a very purist point of view. It’s the point of view of a cinephile who prizes film history.”

Although Nolan understands where Tarantino is coming from, he’s not sure he entirely agrees. After all, there’s usually at least one element to appreciate in a mixed film from a great director.

“I’m not sure that I would trust my own sense of the absolute value of a piece of work to know whether or not it should have been brought into existence,” Nolan told the “ReelBlend” hosts. “I’m a big fan, as is Quentin, of films that maybe don’t fully achieve what they try to, but there’s something in there that’s a performance, or a little structural thing, or a scene, you know, that’s wonderful. And so, yes, I understand. I think wanted to keep a sort of perfect reputation of something, but also kind of don’t want to take anything off the table.”

Nolan’s take on Tarantino’s retirement differs greatly from their friend and fellow filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.

“I know Quentin [Tarantino] likes to say, ‘I’m making 10 movies and then I’m quitting.’ But I could never do that,” Anderson said back in 2018. “I don’t know how he could say that, or how he could take himself seriously when he says that. This is what I want to do as long as I’m able to do it. As long as I’m able to do it, I’m going to do it. I think things can become peculiar when directors don’t act their age maybe, or seeing them try to keep up with the kids or trying to be hip. That’s never a good look.”

Nolan’s latest directorial effort, “Oppenheimer,” is his 12th directorial effort. It’s already earning rave first reactions ahead of its theatrical release. “Taxi Driver” writer Paul Schrader even called it the “best” and “most important film of this century.”

“Oppenheimer” opens in theaters July 21 from Universal Pictures.'

August 16, 1989: Mother's Milk released

In August 1989, the 4th album from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was released. I was aware of the group prior to this album, but this is where I noticed and liked them. They also got some radio play with their cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". It was also a transitional record in that it was the first album with Chad Smith and John Fusciante, the classic lineup! The next album Blood Sugar Sex Magik is where they really blew the roof off, but this is one of my favorite RHCP albums. Happy 35th MM!

In August 1979 both The Ramones' movie opened and one of the longest-running TV sitcoms premiered on the same day! Allan Arkush (a Roger Corman alum) directed the musical comedy movie that was reminiscent of 1950s rock-spoitation movies. In 2015, when I spoke with the film's star P.J. Soles at Rock and Shock, I asked what it was like making this movies and she said she said it was a blast working with The Ramones. I bet! Even though they were a punk band and the idea of movie about them seemed like a commercial move, this movie was nothing but fun! Here is the piece I wrote about Facts of Life in 2019. There is no denying that Sydney Sweeney has skyrocketed in Hollywood, not just for her aesthetic appearance but for her remarkable performance. She has become a known name quite soon in the industry, and one of the reasons she is attracting hot vibes relates to her appealing figure, which all are awed by.
