Good Things Do Not Come Easy
When your lifelong dream, which you are extremely passionate about, requires the most challenging and rigorous academic and mental tests that you have ever encountered, the idea of quitting tends to cross the mind occasionally. Even though I am completely sure that a career in nursing is my calling, being a sophomore in USC's pre-nursing program has definitely shown me what I signed myself up for. I have created this Blog to discuss the reality of the road to becoming a Registered Nurse, the importance of finding moments of peace in each day amongst the constant stress I face, the balance of a social life and a successful academic standing, as well as tips for managing the workload as a student applying to Upper Divison in the coming months.

TYPO II: Blog One
First week into Typography II is going well! Our starting project was to create a poster with images and stories provided by our instructor. She also provided a homework assignment which I found very useful for relearning Indesign.
Setting up grids for design work is very important. I have learned this week that all good design choices will be backed up by some type of grid...I also learned about what type of grids are available for design work, ie column grids, modular grids,  hierarchical grids, and experimental grids.
I enjoy the look of experimental grids above all else and appreciate the expressive freedom that comes with it. I hope this will be reflected in my work throughout the semester when appropriate!

Brett Ball 🫡 Salute😍✊🏿🙏🏿
It was very early in Brett Ball’s experience as a student-athlete with the women’s basketball team that things did not go her way. She came to South Carolina in the summer of 2011 as a scholarship athlete. But before the season began, she was diagnosed with myocardial non-compaction in the left ventricle— a rare genetic heart condition that made it impossible for her to play basketball.
photos of brett ball as a team member and as a Ph.D. candidate
Years: 2011-15
Position: Team vlogger
Key stats: Ball was diagnosed with a heart condition and never got to play for the Gamecocks, but she stayed on scholarship all four years and helped fans get an inside look at the team through her behind-the-scenes videos.
Degrees: Bachelor’s in criminal justice, UofSC; master’s in integrated communications, University of Mississippi
Current position: Ph.D. student in health communication, University of Florida
“I totally could have just said, ‘I’m leaving, this is not going to work out for me,’ ” says Ball, a Ph.D. student in health communication at the University of Florida. “But Coach Staley honored my scholarship. I was still part of the team. When we would travel, I was there; when we had film, I was there; I still attended practices. I did pretty much everything the team did, except work out and play.
“She still coached me as if I was on the court, but in a different way,” Ball says of Staley. “I had to be on time for practice. I had to be on time for class. She didn’t let me just go about in my own way.
“At first I didn’t like it because I was just so frustrated with not being able to play. I thought, ‘I’m not playing so why do I need to do these things.’ But it still made me feel part of the team because I was held to the same standards.
“I don’t know if she had ever had a player under her wing who didn’t play. What are you going to say to make them feel better? She would say there was nothing she could do to help me play, and the only thing she can do is be a guide and I totally respect that. The best thing she could do was be a support system.”
Staley and the basketball media team came up with an idea that Ball would do videos with her teammates to highlight their many off-the-court talents and build up excitement among fans. The show was called Ballin’ with Brett.
“Our team was pretty dynamic,” says Ball, who graduated from UofSC with a degree in criminal justice. “We could have had our own TV show. We had rappers, comedians, drama queens. We definitely had a team full of personalities.”
Producing and hosting the videos got Ball interested in journalism and communications — an interest she has pursued since her time at South Carolina, earning a master’s in integrated communications from the University of Mississippi in her home state.
“It was as good an experience as I could have had without being able to play ball.”
She expects to complete her dissertation and Ph.D. in May. Her research focus is on mental health among African American female athletes, a subject she knows much about.
“Being nine hours away from home, if you’re not somewhere with resources — and USC had resources from A-to-Z — it can be difficult,” she says. “The school had people there who helped with the stress. We had two Black psychologists in the athletic department and that was really helpful for me. That’s how I got started looking into the mental health of athletes.”
Ball says she talked with her advisers and mentors at UofSC before each major life decision she has made. She says she is uncertain where her Ph.D. will take her, but lessons learned from her time with Staley and the Gamecocks women’s basketball program will never leave her.
“I am really interested in ways to improve the mental health of student-athletes. I want to figure out ways to destigmatize mental health and mental illnesses within the athletic and sports space.
“I want to use my experience with mental health, my experience not being able to play and experience with cases of depression and anxiety and I want to be able to help athletes, even if it is from an academic standpoint, about what Black female student athletes have to go through."

Third Eye Man
Tumblr media
To celebrate the only Friday the 13th in 2021, we’re telling a spooky legend of the Third Eyed Man rumored to terrorize students at The UofSC in the service tunnels referred to as catacombs.
The disfigured man with a third eye was first seen on Nov. 12, 1949 by a student named Christopher Nichols who referred to the creature as “The Sewer Man...”

Grid (pgs 111-138)
The first time I ever worked with a grid was back in middle school, when we had to do self portraits in art class. It wasn’t until after transferring to UofSC that I would encounter another grid. InDesign was a program completely new to me last semester and I implemented a grid in the process of creating my portfolio book. It is interesting to learn that the practice of “staggering text in relation to content instead of forcing text to wrap around blocks” (123) is something theorized by Jan Tschichold. I think that his method of using the grid in a methodical, standardized way aligns with how I tend to design my layouts. I like when things are aligned and neat. Something to experiment with in the future would be to try and break the boundaries on purpose. I had never made the connection between grids and graphic design before but in hindsight, it makes sense that every print medium needs some sort of boundary for balance. Otherwise, publications would be difficult to navigate for the average reader. Another important realization is that while a design may look fun and out-of-the-box, that could also make it difficult for sight-impaired people who rely on assistive screen readers to access content. Thinking “in linear terms” (131) is key here.

Bouncing Back After Burnout
Hey everyone! Back here with another post for your reading pleasure.
Ever since coming back from Argentina, life has been even more chaotic. I have a group project in each of my classes, so I’ve been spending a lot of time attending meetings and doing research outside of class. Because of this, I haven’t had much time to allow myself to relax. I know that I won’t be here forever, so I also often feel the need to pack everything that I can into the day: to visit a new place, to try a new dish, to learn a new phrase in Spanish, to talk to someone different every day, etc. All of this combined with the drastic change in temperature (it went from 80 to 60 degrees in one week!) has led me to feel physically and emotionally drained.
When I’m feeling exhausted and wishing nothing more than to be at home in the U.S. snuggled up with my cats, I remind myself to be kinder to myself. Yes, I am here to discover more about the culture and make the most out of my experience, but I am also living here, and that in itself is a way of learning how Uruguayans live too. I also know that not letting myself truly rest will lead to even more stress and burnout. Therefore, I strive to cook a good meal every day, go on a walk to decompress, do cross-stitch in my down time, or call a friend when I’m feeling lonely. In terms of studying, I realize that I am doing the best I can, but I also shouldn’t obsess over it. Overall, I do everything that I can to take care of my body physically and seek fun and relaxing outlets to calm my anxiety.
With all this to be said, I have had some incredible experiences in the past couple of weeks! 2 weeks ago, I went to Punta del Este with a few Uruguayan friends! Punta del Este is a beach town a little less than two hours from Montevideo where everyone in Uruguay goes to vacation over the summer! Here, it’s becoming fall, so nobody was there (ie we had the whole place to ourself!). We walked a lot, played card games, and enjoyed the beach views. This past Saturday, I celebrated my friend’s birthday. Several friends and I went to a pub called Montevideo Beer Company and enjoyed appetizers and drinks with my friend, Fabiana (she’s from Chile!). I gave her a little succulent, and the look on her face told me that it was the perfect gift. On Sunday night, I went to a soccer game! There are two major soccer teams in Uruguay: el club Nacional and Peñarol. I went to a Peñarol game vs. a small team in Colonia, and I had a blast! The atmosphere was incredible- there was a marching band in the middle of the bleachers, and they played the whole 90 minutes of the game! Everyone there knew the lyrics to every chant, and you could see true pain and frustration in their phrases when the other team advanced. The score was tied 1-1 for a while, until at the very last minute, a player from Peñaroldid an unbelievable bicycle kick and scored! As you can imagine, the crowd went wild. People climbed up on the fences, threw color smoke bombs, and sang the chants walking out of the stadium. To be honest, my favorite part was that the game was quick. I was fully expecting to settle in for a three-hour game like the football games at UofSC. To my surprise, I got into bed before 10 p.m.!
Studying abroad isn’t without its challenges, but I’m learning how to manage the stress and thrive in this unique environment. I now understand that it’s ok to put myself first and say “no” to things to rejuvenate myself and come back feeling more refreshed. And if all else fails, I know that a mate will always make my day better.
As the Uruguayans say, Vamoarriba! Hasta luego!
