Laugh from the untitled catherine v isobel fic:
“Louisa! You shouldn’t have said that,” Catherine scolded once Isobel was gone. “You’re right. I shouldn’t have said that,” Louisa admitted, her hands slowly releasing themselves from the fists they had angrily collapsed into while Isobel was still here. “I’m sorry. I can’t help it. That woman just makes me so angry.” “Oh, Louisa, don't be sorry. I simply meant we won’t be reminding River about his mother unless he specifically asks. You’re right. She is an ungrateful cunt.” The words sounded foreign on Catherine’s tongue and even Lamb huffed a laugh.

Young from the untitled louisa shoots river while undercover fic:
“You know he asked for you.” “He what?” Louisa choked out, stunned, searching Catherine’s face to see if she was simply trying to make her feel better. It was one thing for River to tell her he forgave her in the moment before a bullet from her gun almost killed him, it was a completely different thing to want to see her after. She turned her face back to River’s. He looked impossibly young, his face still pale against the white sheets. “When he woke up when he was in the ICU. He asked for you. He wanted to know if you were okay. He said you saved him.” “I’m the reason he’s here, fighting for his life,” Louisa said. “I didn't save anyone but myself.”

Care from the untitled River & Shirley held hostage fic:
“I’m not your fucking nurse you know,” Shirley said but not only brought him the pillow he asked for but carefully lifted his cast-covered arm onto it with a gentle touch River wouldn’t have known she possessed even minutes earlier. “I know,” River said quietly. “But thank you.” He knew asking her to be here wasn’t fair to her. She hadn’t signed up to care for him, no one had, but Catherine and Louisa fell into it more easily. But he wasn’t sure how much longer he could take Louisa and Catherine’s looks. They were filled with unimaginable pity and River has had enough of their pity to last a lifetime. He felt pathetic enough as it was, barely able to function with one working arm; he might have put his head through a wall if he watched Louisa cut up his meat one more time. At least she hadn’t tried to feed him. Catherine had though. Only once but that was enough.

Mistake also from the untitled louisa shoots river while undercover fic:
Louisa rarely went to bars alone anymore. She had asked Shirley once and they had gone just the two of them and that was a mistake Louisa would not make again. Shirley was fine, but the two of them spent the time either talking about the latest annoying thing Roddy Ho did or sitting in uncomfortable silence. Louisa had invited Shirley to the yoga class she was going to the next morning on an impulse. An impulse she greatly regretted when Shirley was kicked out for getting into a fight. She couldn’t ask Catherine to join her at the pub for obvious reasons but they had gotten dinner together after work last week. But sometimes you just wanted to drink away the sorrows of the Slough House week without worrying your alcoholic co-worker is going to judge you over a plate of chicken parmesan. And since there was no way in hell she would be asking JK Coe to get a friendly drink–that left her neighborhood liquor store and takeaway if River was busy.

For the @ficwip word of the week: park
Catherine had met River once as a child. He had these enormous blue eyes that seemed to study you from behind a fringe of blonde hair. Rose had brought him by the Park–or what was then the Park, it was a hotel now–when they made the trip into the city to see a play and visit Grandad at work. He was the only child she had ever seen there and it was an odd thing to see David Cartwright turn from the Old Bastard to Grandad in his presence.
Catherine could never quite picture the woman who would have abandoned that towheaded child who clung to Rose’s hand and laughed when David pulled a coin from behind his ear. Charles died only weeks later and after basement interrogations from Bad Sam, she hadn’t stepped foot in the Park since. With everything that happened after, she hadn’t thought about that moppy haired little boy until he trudged up the Slough House staircase twenty years later.
Catherine had taken every day since then one day at a time, now, waiting for River to come through surgery, she was simply taking it minute to minute.

Day and/or Time for the WIP Words ❤️❤️
Thank you my lovely friend! I've been sitting on these for a while. oops :)
Day from chapter 2 of the ones that make you feel whole:
Someone was operating a jackhammer behind his eyelids and his skin felt both sticky and flush at the same time. His throat wasn’t as raw as it was last night, but it was tender, and his nose was more blocked than a London street during Trooping the Colour. With a groan, River lifted his head off the pillow and glanced at the clock on his bedside table. 14: 32 it stared at him accusingly. Why was he in bed in the middle of the day? Muffled voices broke through the haze surrounding River’s head, and he belatedly remembered Catherine bringing him home from work and tucking him into bed. He bit his lip; no one had looked after him with that level of care since his nan died. River sneezed into his elbow before slowly moving to a sitting position. Briefly dropping his head to his hands, River shuddered a breath before moving his hands to his knees and taking a deep breath. He pushed himself to stand, pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers as spots danced in front of his vision.
Time from the untitled isobel v catherine fic:
The trio looked to see Lamb approach, sitting with a groan next to Isobel, his legs spread wider than was absolutely necessary. Isobel clenched her bag tighter in her lap and wrinkled her nose as Catherine struggled to stifle the smirk forming on her face. Louisa made no such attempt. “Jackson Lamb. I’m the unlucky bastard responsible for River,” Lamb said, holding out his undoubtedly sticky hand. Isobel’s mouth stilled into a straight line, staring at the appendage momentarily before she held her own hand out, her fingertips weakly gripping Lamb’s offered hand. She pulled it back quickly, wiping it not very discreetly against the arm of the plastic chair. For the first time in the twenty years she has been Jackson's PA, Catherine found herself wishing Lamb would break wind if only so she could witness River's mother's reaction.
