I need someone to wirte this fic
when sam goes to hell in season 5 instead of dean taking sam’s word literally he drifts slowly to California, driving fast and angry until he stops at the beach and sees a little girl with practically nothing on her, only her long brunette hair blowing with the wind and her fur coat and her mini black skirt with her no straps shirt and her smudged makeup while smoking a cigarette (the story is like detachment 2011) while she make advances on him batting her big doe eyes at him and her pouty lips, he(still) ignores and she curses at him”who even want your limpy d!ck anyway” (i thought this is funny 😭)
With sammy gone he just wants someone to look after.. thier relationship will be complex and complicated and when they finally have s*x i think he will cry and hold her tight and i think he is oh so overprotective and love to hold her and manhandles her(i am projecting sue me)and she is malnourished and tiny due to her homelessness, he loves to point that out and loves to take care of her(SOFT DEAN I LOVE YOU)+he loves to stroke her face and looks longingly at her with love and guilt(ugh my heart), i feel like it’s mix between detachment x lolita x buffalo 66 minus the kidnapping, i am thinking at some point he will yell at her and she would react how layla reacted she wouldn’t freak out she would embrace him instead, like the finale scene on the movie
please make it looooongggg and please no first person ew it would be preferable if it’s dean’s pov
Imagine her while dean is getting out of the impala she’s just there applying lipstick and lipgloss unbothered
#Dean winchester#fanfic#fanfiction#ao3#ao3 writer#writers on tumblr#writers 🙏#dean winchester x reader#dean winchester fanfiction#supernatural fanfiction#supernatural#if i knew how to fucking write I would’ve written it :(#I am so demanding hahaha#Soo cringyyyyy i love it#Her vibe is so kate mess lol

Tylwyth Teg
Tylwyth Teg (Middle Welsh for "Fair Family") is the most usual term in Wales for the mythological creatures corresponding to the fairy folk of English and Continental folklore and the Irish Aos Sí. Other names for them include Bendith y Mamau ("Blessing of the Mothers"), Gwyllion and Ellyllon.
The term tylwyth teg is first attested in a poem attributed to the 14th-century Dafydd ap Gwilym, in which the principal character gets perilously but comically lost while going to visit his girlfriend: "Hudol gwan yn ehedeg, / hir barthlwyth y Tylwyth Teg" ("(The) weak enchantment (now) flees, / (the) long burden of the Tylwyth Teg (departs) into the mist").
In later sources the tylwyth teg are described as fair-haired and covet golden-haired human children whom they kidnap, leaving changelings (or crimbilion, sing. crimbil) in their place. They dance and make fairy rings and they live underground or under the water. They bestow riches on those they favour but these gifts vanish if they are spoken of, and fairy maidens may become the wives of human men. These fairy wives are however still bound by traditional taboos. They must be careful to avoid touching iron or they will vanish back to their realm never to be seen by their husbands again.
As the Bendith y Mamau (the mothers blessing, a Southern Welsh name for Fair folk) They ride horses in fairy rades (processions) and visit houses where bowls of milk are customarily put out for them. A changeling story tells of a woman whose three-year-old son was stolen by the fairies and she was given a threefold instruction by a "cunning man" (magician) on how to get him back. She removed the top from a raw egg and began stirring the contents, and as the changeling watched her do this certain comments he made established his otherworldly identity. She then went to a crossroads at midnight during the full moon and observed a fairy raid in order to confirm that her son was with them. Lastly she obtained a black hen and without plucking it she roasted it over a wood fire until every feather dropped off. The changeling then disappeared and her son was returned to her.
According to the folklorist Wirt Sikes the Tylwyth Teg may be divided into five general types: the Ellyllon (elves), the Coblynau (fairies of the mines), the Bwbachod (household fairies similar to brownies), the Gwragedd Annwn (female fairies of the lakes and streams) and the Gwyllion (mountain fairies more akin to hags). The ellyllon (singular ellyll) inhabit groves and valleys and are similar to English elves. Their food consists of toadstools and fairy butter (a type of fungus) and they wear digitalis bell flowers as gloves. They are ruled by Queen Mab and bring prosperity to those they favour.

behold! i didn't see any otgw icebergs, so i made my own :)
if you think i should add something, lmk!!
Explanations under cut :)
First layer:
▪︎Beast!Wirt au - very popular au in which Wirt stays in the Unknown, possessed by the Beast to some extent.
▪︎Bad End Friends - Crossover AU of Beast!Wirt teaming up with Ice Finn from Adventure Time and Bipper from Gravity Falls; sometimes other 'bad end' au characters are thrown in such as a glitched Gumball from TAWOG
▪︎Irl Copies of the For Sara tape - Limited copies of the For Sara tape were sold at two points. They have yet to sell for a third time. (🤞🤞🤞)
▪︎Tome of the Unknown (pilot) - The Pilot of the series. Can be watched on YouTube.
▪︎Wirt Staying in the Unknown - In a scrapped ending, Wirt was to stay in the Unknown, saying that facing your real problems was scarier than staying there.
▪︎Mystery Kids - Crossover AU with other child-late teens aged characters from sources based on mysterious and supernatural themes such as Gravity Falls and Psychonauts.
▪︎Quincy Endicott's grave - Quincy's grave can be seen in the graveyard that Sara and the others are hanging out in.
▪︎Original Beatrice Voice Actress - Beatrice had a different VA in the pilot, Natasha Leggero. Melanie Lynskey voices her in the actual series.
▪︎The Woodsman's Daughter is Named Anna - The comics have several issues focused on his daughter, in which her name is revealed to be Anna.
▪︎Jason Funderburker's Ax Murderer Story - At the gathering in the graveyard, Funderburker is telling a story about a man with an ax; this story is believed to have influenced the existence of the Woodsman.
▪︎Full Versions of Songs in the OST - A handful of the songs are cut down for their appearances in the series and can only be heard in full on the OST. The most notable example is Old Black Train , which is actually 2 minutes and 15 seconds long, but is only in the series for about 15-20 seconds.
Second Layer:
▪︎Sara is named after the Fleetwood Mac song - Listen to it here :) it is notable that it includes lyrics about "drowning in a sea of love" and that Sara is "the poet of [the singer's] heart."
▪︎OTGW Reanimated - a reanimated project for the first episode. Got taken off of YouTube, but can be viewed on Dailymotion.
▪︎Baby Wirt Audio - In the For Sara cassette, there is a small section of audio that can be heard in about the middle of the recording of Wirt's father talking to him as a baby.
▪︎Funderburker/Funderberker - The two Jasons's surnames are spelled slightly differently to avoid confusion.
▪︎The Brothers Never Ate or Needed to Rest - Although Greg expressed being hungry, neither of the boys actually ate anything (outside of one spoonful of bland potatoes and inedible items such as dirt and leaves) and never laid down to rest, only sleeping when night came.
▪︎Book on Interior Design in Wirt's Room - In Wirt's from, a book on interior design can be seen laying on the floor, backing up the knowledge he displayed when analyzing the interconnected mansions.
▪︎Mad Love was Based on a Dream - The plot of Mad Love came from a dream that Pat McHale had about house hunting. In the dream, while exploring one of the houses being shown, he ended up wandering into someone else's home.
▪︎Beatriceoftheday - A blog dedicated to our lord and savior Beatrice, known for its strange shitposts and intense praise of the titular bird girl.
▪︎Wirt is Jealous of Greg's Popularity - Shown in the Circus Friends issue of the comics, Wirt is jealous of Greg's ability to make everyone laugh and have fun. This may factor into his dislike of his brother.
▪︎Greg was Feeding Fred at the Tavern - At first watching, one may be confused as to where all the food Greg was gathering went, why Fred was wearing lipstick and why he was refusing to talk to Beatrice. Shown in a deleted scene, this all explained, as Fred tells Beatrice that he didn't talk to her because Greg was feeding him.
▪︎Elijah Wood Voiced the Crazy Driver - Exactly what is says on the tin, the nutty driver was voiced by Wood.
▪︎Cloud City is Heaven - A popular theory that Cloud City actually represents Heaven.
▪︎Greg is Greg Universe - A headcanon/theory that has mostly died out that Greg is the same Greg in Steven Universe.
▪︎Bee Beatrice - Beatrice was originally cursed to become a bee, but was changed into a bluebird to match better with the seasonal autumn theme.
▪︎Pat McHale Voiced Wirt's Voice Crack - Wirt's voice crack when asking the Beast Are You? was actually done by McHale, not Wood.
▪︎The Other Actors Harassing Elijah Wood When Singing Wirt's Song - In order to make the performance as awkward as possible, the other actors were asked to yell and demand Wirt to sing. This can be heard in the episode.
▪︎Come Wayward Souls Has the Same Melody as O Holy Night - The song shares a cadence with "O Holy Night", and can be sung to its tune.
▪︎Black Turtles Origin/Purpose - No one knows why the black turtles exist, and McHale has said that they're just one of the unexplainable things of the Unknown.
▪︎Anna Never Left the House - In the aforementioned comics, it is shown that Anna had never left the house, living on her own until the Woodsman's return.
▪︎Sailor Suit Greg - Greg originally wore a sailor suit, but was changed later on to his current, Johnny Appleseed inspired outfit .
▪︎Beatrice Missing Being Able to Flip People Off - In the Art Book, Beatrice's introduction states that one of the reasons she hates being a bird is because she no longer has hands to flip people off with.
Third Layer
▪︎Jason Funderberker is Visually Based on a Teen Pat McHale - As seen here, Funderberker was designed after McHale.
▪︎Babes in the Wood is Based on an Old Alice in Wonderland Cartoon - You can view the original 1923 cartoon here! Starts at 4:25.
▪︎Wirt and Sara are Dipper and Mabel's Parents - A popular AU/hc where Dipper and Mabel of Gravity Falls are the future kids of Wirt and Sara.
▪︎The Tune of Wirt's Song is Improvised - In addition to the aforementioned harassment, in a further attempt to make the performance as awkward as possible, Elijah Wood was not given a tune to sing, only the lyrics.
▪︎Wirt's Costume Origin - As said in the art book and on his tumblr, Wirt's cone and cape come from an attempted rock and roll persona from McHale's teen years.
▪︎Greg is Based on Pat McHale's Son - It has been claimed that Greg is based on McHale's son, but Greg existed before him. The similarities are simply coincidental.
▪︎Old Scratch - The original name of the Beast.
▪︎The Beast Killed the Woodsman's Wife - Shown in the comics, The Woodsman's wife was mortally injured, with her attacker implied to be the Beast.
▪︎Wirt and Greg Staying in the Unknown Until Christmas - Another scrapped ending, in which the brothers stay in The Unknown until Christmas, with their absence unexplained.
▪︎Tome of the Unknown (original plot) - Early concepts had the Beast ( then known as Old Scratch as mentioned earlier ) scattering the pages of the titular book for the brothers to collect. Each page would come to life and the brothers would explore each story.
▪︎Dante's Inferno Comparisons - Check out these videos for full analysis!
▪︎Wirt Panty Shots - In the aforementioned Circus Friend comics, Wirt dons a dress as part of a disguise. Later on, he rips off the bottom half off, revealing that he is wearing bloomers.
▪︎The Beast's True Form was Inspired by Trypophobia - As stated in the art book, The Beast's hole-filled appearance was inspired by Trypophobia, the fear of many small holes.
▪︎The Fight is Over is About Drowning - Give the lyrics another read.
▪︎The Beast Last Minute Design Change - The Beast had a very different design, and it was changed into the current one at the last minute.
▪︎Gnome in Cloud City Representing Wirt - Many people believed that the Gnome with the lantern in cloud city was a parallel to Wirt, or a glimpse into his future. However, this was debunked.
▪︎Send Me a Peach - This song is included in the ost, but isn't in the actual series.
▪︎Fred and the Highwayman's Backstory - The comics expand upon the story of Fred the Horse and his involvement with the Highwayman.
Fourth Layer
▪︎Babes in the Wood Title Origin - The name of this episode comes from an old story of a pair of children getting lost in the woods, dying, and being buried in leaves by robins.
▪︎poorlydrawnotgw - This was a blog created during the poorly drawn series meme period. It consisted of poorly drawn and very strange shitposts and has since been deactivated. I was a part of it as mod Goopy Wirt and only have a handful of images saved from it.
▪︎Read and Listen Book Lost Audio - A read and listen book was created, with the book being read by Greg's Frog, who would stop every now and again to talk about being a frog. The pages can be found online, but the audio is currently lost.
▪︎Skinless Witch - A scrapped episode concept involved a skinless witch that kidnapped Greg and rode him like a horse.
▪︎Gentleman Burglar Wirt - A scrapped concept in which Wirt breaks into a woman's home, who is charmed by this young man who has come to visit her.
▪︎Animal Transformation - It was originally planned for Wirt and Greg to be turned into a bear/dog and a duck and remain that way for several episodes. This was later used in the comics.
▪︎The Unknown is influenced by Wirt's mind/interests - The Unknown is influenced by those who walk in it, in this case, Wirt. This includes the old timey mystical nature of it, as Wirt has been stated to have an interest in old folk tales.
▪︎Good Guy Beast/Black Train Scrapped Concept - In an earlier draft, the brothers were on a train, heading to what they assumed was death. They jump off, ending up in the Unknown. The Beast tries to get them back on the train, which turns out to be heading back to life.
▪︎Evil Woodsman - At one point, the Woodsman was intended to be under the influence of the Beast and tried to sabotage the brothers's attempts to return home.
▪︎Lorna Reading the Tome of the Unknown in the Epilogue - In the epilogue, Lorna can be seen reading the titular book from the aforementioned scrapped plot.
▪︎The Beast was Originally the Devil Himself - The Beast was first designed as a devil-like character, the aforementioned Old Scratch.
▪︎The Brothers Never Went Home/The Hospital is Part of The Unknown - a theory based on the fact that the edges of the screen are still blurred at the end of chapter 10, the rushed narration, and the lack of consequences of nearly drowning.
▪︎Beatrice Seeing Wirt Nude - In one of the comics, Beatrice accidentally sees Wirt while he is washing his clothes in the river.
▪︎Sara is a Descendant of Lorna - A theory that Sara is a distant relative of Lorna.
▪︎Exists in the Same Universe as Clarence and Home Movies - The most well known piece of evidence is the overhead shot of the town matching the town that Clarence is set in. Wirt and Greg also have a cameo in another episode, and one of the final episodes shows Brendon Small of Home Movies runs a movie rental store in the town, connecting all three series together.
Final Layer
▪︎Beast x Wirt - Also known as Poetree.
▪︎Candycone - Greg x Wirt.

Secret Santa for Trustintoast
((Happy Holidays @trustintoast ! I’m your secret santa! You wanted “Awkward Nerd Love”, mixed with “Casual Everyday”, and “Pinescone vs. Disney World”, So I tried to combine them a little. I’m sorry that it’s Disneyland, instead of World–I’ve only been to DisneyWorld once, but I’ve been to DL multiple times, so I thought it would be easier to explain. I’m also sorry that I cut it much shorter. I wanted to make sure you got your gift, but I initially had more planned with them at the park. I hope you still like it. And if not, I could come back and fix it up for you. Thank you for the wait. I hope you had a happy holidays. Enjoy your gift!))
—
“Sunscreen?”
“Check!”
“Change of Clothes?”
“Double Check!”
“Money for Souvenirs?”
“Triple Check!”
“Backpacks for everyone to carry their supplies?”
“Check Check Check! We’re good babe.”
“Well, I would expect nothing less from my favorite organizer.”
The man in the passenger seat blushed at the compliment, hiding behind his phone.
From the backseat came, “I want to get some Mickey Mouse Ears!” followed by a thump thump thump!
The driver scowled in the rearview mirror at his brother, “Greg, we’ll get you your Mickey Mouse ears, but please stop kicking the back of my seat. It’s not going to make me drive any faster.”
Another voice from the backseat exclaimed, “I WANT BABY YODA!!!” followed by an even louder THUMP THUMP THUMP!
“Ahhh! Mabel, what are you, five? Don’t kick the back of my seat!”
“Why do you get shot gun, Dip n Dots!” The female voice, now identified as Mabel Pines, pouted.
“Because I’m the one with the map!” The passenger, her twin brother Dipper Pines, explained.
“Your map is literally your phone, open to google maps! Anyone of us could have done it.”
“But no one would look as cute as Dipper,” The driver, Wirt, said with a light dusting of pink on his cheeks.
“Ewwwww, gag me with a spoon!” Mabel groaned, sinking into her seat.
“No being gross and mushy on this trip,” The last rider, Greg, huffed. He gave his brother’s seat another thorough kick.
“Hey! Greg! Knock it off! I can still turn this car around!” Wirt warned.
Greg rolled his eyes, leaning over to whisper in Mabel’s ear, “Yeah right. We’re stuck in traffic. We’re not going anywhere.” Mabel snickered.
“I heard that!”
The two backseat passengers snapped to attention, biting their bottom lip to keep from further chortling.
“Also, we’re going to Disneyland, the “happiest place on earth!” I think a little mushiness is to be expected,” Dipper said, turning to look back at his sister.
“Yeah, but we’re in a car for the next 2 hours, and if I have to listen to you two flirt, I think I’d rather walk the rest of the way.”
“You’re just bitter cause you have no one to flirt with.” Mabel gasped, a hand to her chest, “You wound me dear brother! How dare you say such slanderous and true words!”
Dipper rolled his eyes, turning back in his seat.
“Hey! Why aren’t we playing Disney music? This is a road trip to Disneyland! Shouldn’t we be jamming out to some classic hits?” Mabel leaned forward, trying to grab the aux cord.
Dipper smacked her hands away, “Ugh, no Mabel! How tacky can you get!”
“You’re tacky!” Mabel snapped back.
“YEAH, I AGREE, THIS CAR IS TOO QUIET! WE NEED SOME DISNEY MUSIC!” Greg shouted, siding with Mabel.
“We’re going to be there for hours! We’ll get plenty of Disney cheer at the park,” Wirt tried to protest. He just knew that if they played that music, he’d wind up with a headache.
But both his and Dipper’s words were quickly drowned out by the two excitable chantings of Disney Music! Disney Music! Disney Music!”
“They’re not going to stop…” Dipper muttered.
Wirt groaned, wanting to slam his head on the steering wheel, “I know…”
Dipper whipped back around, glaring, “Fine, you heathens! You win!”
“YAY!!!!”
“YAY!!!!” The two simultaneously cheered.
Mabel leaned back over, triumphantly taking the aux cord as her prize, and plugged it in to her bedazzled phone. She turned the volume up to the max.
“Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” from Lilo and Stitch filled the car.
Dipper slammed his head back into the headrest, “Hooray~” He droned.
Mabel sneered evilly, “Oh don’t pretend like you hate it Dipstick! In fact, If I remember, I believe it was you who wanted to play the Frozen 2 soundtrack in the car, on the way back from the theatre.”
Dipper lit up like a Christmas Tree. He began stuttering weakly in Wirt’s direction, as if trying to save face, “T-that’s only because the soundtrack was really good this time, and had an air of folk that the first movie severely lacked. It made Frozen 2 feel more genuine to the original story. I was just really impressed this time–”
“Right…Right…Oh but wait…which song was your favorite again?” Mabel asked, putting a finger to her cheek, pretending to think. Then that wicked smile returned, full force, “Oh yeah! It was “Lost in the Woods”!”
“Mabel, NO! STOP! Have mercy!”
But there was no mercy for those who cursed Disney music.
“Wait…which one was Lost in the Woods again?” Wirt asked. He thought back to the movie, trying to remember which of those songs would be Dipper’s favorite. Was it the lullaby song? Or the one Elsa sang?
Mabel and Greg’s eyes sparkled with ill intent; Dipper ducked low into his seat, but there was no escaping, no hiding.
Not when Mabel had control of the radio. And with that innocent question, the song that followed was an 80’s-esque rock ballad.
“Oh…Oh. Y-yeah…this makes sense,” Even Wirt couldn’t hide the slight curl of his lips. He cast his boyfriend a sidelong glance.
Dipper looked out his window, longingly. He wondered if it wasn’t too late to throw himself out of the passenger side door, into oncoming vehicles.
…But they were stuck in the deadlock of traffic, so that plan was quickly, and regretfully, forgotten.
—
“Hi, can I get 8 breakfast Jack meals–”
“Wirt, I want pancakes!” Greg whined.
“Greg, they don’t serve pancakes–” “Actually they do. You can do the mini pancakes, or the Jumbo Breakfast platter,” Mabel pointed out.
Wirt looked at the menu, eyebrows rising, “Wow, when did they add that?” It had been a very long time since he’d eaten here. This fast food chain was more recognizable in the west coast then the east.
“I want the Jumbo Breakfast!” Greg shook the driver’s seat.
“Greg, are you going to finish that? I don’t want to buy something unless you’re sure you’ll eat it.”
“Silly ol brother o’ mine, I’m a growing boy! I can totally eat all that,” Greg patted his stomach like it was a djembe drum. His stomach growled back, as if to second it’s owner’s proclamation.
Wirt muttered dejectedly to himself, “And the syrup in the car…that’s just an accident waiting to happen…”
“Sir…you’re holding up the line…” the timid voice on the speaker mumbled.
“Yes, I’m sorry. I’m very sorry! Just give me one more minute,” Wirt apologized; he didn’t expect breakfast to be this stressful. He was almost certain that when he was little, ordering breakfast on a road trip was a simple endeavor.
Then again, Wirt easily accepted what his parent’s ordered for him.
“Can I order a milkshake?”
“Mabel, It’s 7:30 in the morning,” Wirt looked at her in abject horror.
“…And?” Mabel so eloquently put it.
“Guys, come on, can’t we just make it simple?…Dipper you’re fine with what I ordered, right?”
Dipper flashed his lover a guilty smile, “Well, um, actually, I was going to ask if I could order from the lunch menu instead…I prefer their lunch over their breakfast…”
Wirt was utterly betrayed, “E tu?”
Dipper put his hands together, mumbling a soft, but pleading, “Sorry, and thank you!”
Wirt sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, “Everyone hurry up and tell me what you want–exactly what you want! Because I really don’t want to waste this poor lady’s time any further, and the cars behind me are starting to angrily honk their horns.”
And suddenly the car was filled with a cacophony of different requests.
“One at a time! One at a time!” Wirt cried, trying to figure out whose request was who’s.
Was this what it was going to be like from now one, being the driver of a road trip? Endless chatter, constant bickering, and indecision when ordering food–topped off by off key singing to the same playlist for the next couple hours. Oh this was not looking good for his sanity.
“…Sir…” the voice on the headset whimpered, sounding even smaller.
“I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! Just one more second. I promise!”
The car behind him rammed their horn. When Wirt peeked in the rearview window, he could see an elderly woman flipping him the bird.
—
When he pulled up to the window, the lady who handed him the food was shaking, her eyes big and fearful. She shrunk back when Wirt took the bags from her hands, as if she was expecting him to yell at her.
Wirt understood that anxiety so well, he once more apologized for the commotion, and slipped a 20 dollar tip into her hand.
When he pulled away, the lady seemed a little less on edge.
—
An hour later, and Wirt’s resistance was starting to crumple.
After 20 songs, food sitting comfortably in his belly, and more than a couple loving looks from his boyfriend, Wirt was beginning to enjoy the ride.
He even did the unthinkable, and turned up the dial on the radio when “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” started up. The look of shock– quickly followed by glee– from his family’s faces was priceless.
And when he joined in singing “When Will my Life Begin” with the rest of them, he knew he was doomed.
Goodbye Sanity. T’was nice knowing you. Come back soon.
—
As soon as they arrived, Wirt had to keep a tight hold on the back of Greg’s shirt, because the teen was desperately trying to run off.
“Greg, I don’t care if you’re 13 now, you stay by my side until we get inside the park. I don’t want to lose you on the bus, or have some weirdo try to kidnap you.”
“Ugh, Wirt, stop treating me like a child–” Greg huffed.
“Well, you have a habit of getting us into trouble,” Wirt said, though he quickly realized the person usually getting them into trouble was himself.
“No you!” Greg snapped, though his smirk was playful.
“No You!” Wirt snapped back, also smiling.
They stuck their tongues out at one another.
Meanwhile, Mabel was dragging her brother violently towards the buses, her excitement having reached critical, “Come on Dipper, quit dragging your feet! We’re here!!! Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!”
“Mabel, stop pulling, I need to tie my shoe. I’m gonna trip. M-Mabel! Wirt, help me! She’s gone mad!”
“Mabel Madness! I’M COMING FOR YOU BABY YODA, YOU WILL BE MINE!” Mabel cackled, sounding like a disney villain.
“Wirt!!!!”
—
“Okay, so we should start at heading for Adventure Island and work our way around,” Wirt traced the map with his finger, showing their destined path.
“I think we should go counterclockwise, cause the more popular rides will get populated in the evening, as more guests arrive,” Dipper argued, tracing the map opposite Wirt.
“BABY YODA! We gotta start with Galaxy’s Edge, because that’s going to be the most crowded of all! We want to get in a few rides early,” Mabel chimed in, vigorously pointing at the newest area.
The three bickered about what to do, until they realized there was one more person with them, and turned to Greg to be the tie breaker.
Greg looked at the three expectant faces, trying to decide who would be the right choice.
He should side with his brother…but then again, Dipper was well organized…on the other hand, Mabel was his best friend…but Wirt usually knew best…but Dipper and Mabel had been to Disney before…but– “Um…Um…Maybe, we could…flip a coin?” Greg finally suggested.
The three young adults groaned.
“Greg, there’s three of us, and there’s no such thing as a three sided coin,” Wirt reprimanded.
Greg squinted at his brother, then turned to address the twins, “Well then we’ll flip for Mabel and Dipper’s plan, since Wirt has been eliminated from making a choice.”
“Hey! Wait! What? Greg!”
—
Galaxy’s Edge was packed when the four walked through the gates. Like a can of sardines, the group shuffled slowly through the crowds, trying not to get separated. Wirt kept one hand tightly on his brother’s, while the other hand clung to the back of Dipper’s jacket. The waving bodies made him feel nauseous and claustrophobic, but he swallowed it back, determined not to get sick so early in the day.
Everything would be fine as long as they stuck together.
At least, until Mabel saw her baby yoda plush hanging from one of the open stall shops–at which point, she made a mad dash for the store, barreling a way through. Many people ducked out of her way as she ravenously charged for her prize.
Within seconds, the path she had carved was swallowed up by the park goers.
“Mabel, get back here!” Dipper yelled, but she was already gone. “Wirt, can you–?”
He didn’t need to be asked twice. Wirt craned his head to keep his eyes on her. It wasn’t hard when she was wearing a glittery red sweater, and matching sparkly headband.
However, just as he spotted her long brown hair fluttering, he felt his brother’s hand slip out of his hold.
He whipped his head back around, catching a glimpse of green as his brother slipped under people’s legs, heading towards the giant Millennium Falcon building
“Greg! W-wait! Get back here!” His voice croaked– but just like his brother, and Dipper’s sister–it was swallowed up by the crowd.
Panic began to bubble up in his stomach. Wild thoughts flitted through his head–one after the other, each one worse than the last. Getting lost in a big place like this– this was not good! And Dipper was dragging him in one direction, while his brother was running in the other. He stuttered over his tongue, trying to find the words to stop them, but bit his tongue in the process. The bodies swayed to and fro, pushing him and pulling him; his hands were clammy, and he could feel his own grip loosening. The feeling of anxiety mounted, as his vision grew spotty.
Not good, not good, not good, not– Dipper intertwined their fingers, squeezing, and all the previous anxieties melted away. They were stopped in the middle of the walkway, with a few annoyed people passing them by, but Dipper was looking at him with a composed smile. Dipper wasn’t often composed–they were both nervous, stuttering messes in the worst of situations. But right now, seeing Dipper’s relaxed composition, and having the man’s hands tightly holding his, he could see those few glimpses of bravery, of excitement and calculated analytics–one of the many reasons he fell for the man in front of him.
“Don’t worry, everyone’s got cell phones. Nothing’s going to happen. We’ll grab Mabel, and then find Greg. He’s right, you know? He’s not a baby anymore–you don’t have to worry so much about him. It’s going to be okay Wirt, just breathe. I’m here. We’re going to have fun today, I promise. So relax, and just breathe.”
Those simple words were a great start, though Wirt knew it was still going to take some convincing.
He took a deep inhale through his nose, releasing a shaky exhale from his mouth.
“Right…fun. We’re here to have fun.” He inhaled once more; his second exhale was steadier, “…Okay. Let’s go save the poor sales clerk from your sister.”
Dipper’s smile turned to something more bubbly; it was clear he was just as excited to be here as the other two. After all, this was Dipper’s whole childhood, of course he would be geeking out–especially when his favorite franchise finally had its own area. But he was still trying to stay cool for his lover, and Wirt truly appreciated that level headedness right now. Dipper squeezed Wirt’s hand one more time for boosted confidence.
The bodies swayed, but Dipper and Wirt swayed with them, keeping afloat in the massive ocean of Star Wars fans.
—
From there, the group went from each area to the next, riding the different attractions, and exploring the many stores offered. Lines were long, sometimes 40 minutes long, but the group kept distracted with playful banner, and dumb word games.
Mabel lugged her new Yoda doll in her arms, cradling it like a newborn baby. Dipper swore he could even hear her cooing to it from time to time.
Greg ate a churro that was sprinkled with blue candy powder–the “light side” churro saber.
Wirt was spooning the last of his frozen lemonade into his mouth, reluctantly wearing a pair of Sorcerer’s apprentice, Mickey Mouse ears that Greg had put on him.
Dipper stared at his family, feeling a calming bliss that he often didn’t get to experience by himself. As he watched his family, trying to decide where to go next, what to do next, Dipper blessed his lucky stars–When you wish upon a star playing in the back of his mind–that he had such a perfectly crazy, but loving family.
Wirt looked over, noticing Dipper’s stare, and he smiled bashfully, cheeks pink. “What are you looking at?”
“Nothing, just…I’m having a good time,” Dipper replied.
“Even with this heat, and this crowd?” Wirth inquired.
Dipper leaned his head briefly on Wirt’s shoulder, and for a second–just a second– he braced his hands around Wirt’s arm, holding him like they were a lovesick, brand new couple, “Yeah…Is it preemptive to say that I don’t want this day to end?”
Wirt laughed, the blush rising to the tips of his ears, “Well, it’s barely noon, there’s still plenty of time left in the day–so, yes. But I think I know what you mean.” Wirt ducked down, kissing Dipper’s sweat soaked, bang covered, forehead, “For my first time here…I thought it was going to be a lot worse. But I got to say, with you and Mabel here–it’s still pretty hectic…but much more enjoyable.”
Dipper’s eyes widened, “This is your first time here at Disney?” “Dipper, I lived in Massachusetts for most of my childhood! Of course it is!”
Dipper eyes started to sparkle, “Well then, I got a lot of lasting memories to leave you with.” He liked the challenge already.
Seeing the adorable, childlike expression on the 19 year old, made Wirt laugh even harder, “Well I look forward to seeing what you pull off!”
Dipper started babbling excitedly, “Oh man, we have to go on the Matterhorn next! It’s pretty fast, and a little wild, but really fun. And it’s two to a seat…so maybe you and I could share a—AH! Ohhh, I just remembered. The matterhorn macaroons are the best–you have to try them, although that’s located at the Jolly Holiday Bakery! But we’ll make sure to get some. I’ve got the perfect plan for hitting all the rides and best locations in the most amount of time, even with the long lines. Hmm, I guess I have to show you “It’s a Small World”–it’s not super fun–kinda annoying, but it’s a Disneyland staple. But if we’re going by Disney staples, then we gotta do Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Space Mountain. Ohhh I gotta figure out what to do for lunch. There’s so many good choices–but also really crappy ones, so be careful. Don’t worry, me and Mabel know the best…Mabel–Hey, hey, Mabel! Where should we go to lunch!? It’s Greg and Wirt’s first time at Disney! We gotta make it special! Mabel, did you hear me?”
Hearing that it was their first time, Mabel squealed excitedly, and began babbling alongside her brother, the two practically speaking codes. Greg and Wirt watched the two in amazement, both intrigued, and horrified–well, mostly Wirt is horrified– at the shift in fanatics.
“I wanna go on Indiana Jones! And Oh, Pirates of the Carribean, we have to ride that too! I wanna see Jack Sparrow! Hey, hey Wirt, should we get autographs since we never got them before?” Greg chimed in, the enthusiasm contagious. This gets Dipper and Mabel squawking even more eagerly.
“Is it true that they have giant Turkey legs here? And something called “Hidden Mickeys?” Wirt asked, trying to keep up with the rest of his family. He didn’t want to feel so out of the loop, but maybe playing along was a little much, considering the effect it was having.
The twins looked like they’re going to explode at this point, ready to burst with all their Disney trivia and knowledge.
Wirt sighed, mumbling softly to himself, “I’m just thankful I didn’t plan a trip to Disneyworld. I’m scared to see you guys planning out your day there.”
The conversation stopped dead. Dipper and Mabel turned, eyes wide, pupils dilating. Wirt realized too late, that they had heard him.
And suddenly, the conversation turned to plans for next year, and tickets to Florida, and overnight stays at cheap hotels. Epicot, and Animal Kingdom, and the water parks in summer–all the special foods and treats that Magic Kingdom had over Disneyland. His mumblings had gotten Greg excited, thinking they were really planning to go there next summer.
The idea was ludicrous, but watching Dipper’s face, red with nervous joy, the gleam in his eyes, and his dimples deepening as he laughed, the idea didn’t seem so irrational.
Although, Wirt would prefer a trip with just the two of them, if they were to do something that huge. Much as he loved his brother and Mabel, a place that big would be too much stress, and Wirt would really just like to focus on one thing at a time: that one thing being Dipper, in this instance.
In order to stop the delusions from continuing and hope from blossoming, Wirt clapped his hands, and declared, “Before we start making plans for next year, let’s worry about today. We’re only burning daylight if we stand here talking about what ifs. Dipper, you promised you’d make today memorable, so let’s make some memories. I…I want to know more about this…Matterhorn macaroon.”
It sounded strangely mature, but also incredibly dorky. He flushed as the words left his mouth.
But Mabel had run and taken Greg’s hand, dragging him off, and Dipper had wrapped his arm around Wirt’s, pulling him along, which must have meant that his little speech had worked.
He didn’t know what was going to happen next, or if today would be anymore hectic–of course it is, Wirt, you’re at a theme park, and you don’t even like rides–but, if nothing else, today would be an adventure.
And Wirt quickly learned through dating Dipper Pines, that any adventure, big or small, was always going to be worthwhile, so long as they were tackling it together. And unlike Gravity Falls, there was likely to be less crazy, paranormal anomalies happening around them; they were less likely to get hurt, or fall into danger here at Disneyland–hopefully.
They would cross that castle bridge when they got to it.

Greg is a Chaos Fairy, Wirt needs to learn to Say No, and Sara's day just got Cursed With Being Interesting
“Look!” Greg ran down the road. “The horse tracks go in this direction.”
“Horse tracks,” Sara repeated.
“An evil horse kidnapped Wirt,” Greg informed her.
“Why do you think that?” she let her eyes narrow. “Is that something that happens, here?”
“Yes.”
“...you’ve met horse kidnappers,” she repeated, just to be sure.
“Probably. They’re--”
“Probably. ”
“Probably that way,” Greg pointed impatiently.
The brothers, the frog, and Sara run afoul of further folktale mischief.
「Read it on my Ao3 」
Chapter One
Sara opened her mouth to ask Wirt something, she wasn’t sure what, because as soon as she looked up her eyes met the eyes of Greg’s frog. “What,” she whispered, glancing from the back of his head, where the frog was perched, to the teacher, who was still sorting through her bag, not having noticed the invading agent of chaos.
“Sssh,” Greg squirmed on the seat, kicking his legs, then sat still with a sigh of satisfaction. “I have to do roll call for Wirt.”
“Why?” she whispered back. “Is he--”
Greg beckoned her down to the floor, whispering under their desks. “He’s digging a grave.”
“He’s what?”
“We were walking along, and we found a body, and it looked just like our friend Beatrice.” Unsatisfied with the level of secrecy, he’d made parentheses for his face out of his hands, so his stage whisper was magnified from about four inches away.
Sara made a frog-like noise. “Did you call 911?! Oh,” her eyes narrowed. “Wait, was it a bird?”
“I told him I’d come get a recorder to play a funeral song, but then the bell rang.”
“Uhh,” Sara reviewed the words in her head.
“My frog will sing,” Greg nodded. “You should come, you can throw flowers. It will be a good funeral.”
Greg’s frog decided that moment to let its chin swell to nearly its own size again, in anticipation of a truly ground-shaking croak, and before Sara could question herself, she was grabbing her bag, grabbing the frog, and dragging Greg out of the classroom. The frog, startled, let out a ribbit so loud the classrooms they passed fell silent, and she grabbed for Greg’s sleeve to pull him faster.
“I didn’t say Wirt’s name for roll call!” he scrabbled at lockers, his shoes squeaking loudly as he fought. “We’re passing the music room! I need a recorder!”
“ Fine, ” she squinted through the darkened glass of the door, then drug him inside, just as voices started to echo in the hall behind them.
“Wirt had perfect attendance,” Greg informed her, strict hands on hips, as she listened for footsteps at the door. “Oh well. You have to play too, then. My frog will sing.”
“I only play the piano,” she hissed back.
“I will grab a triangle for you,” Greg hrmmmed over the selection, finally selecting a pale, cream-coloured recorder. “Oh, I can’t find a triangle.”
“Shh,” she tried again, looking over to see him unlatching one of the low windows. “What--no, Greg--”
There was a thumping crash outside, as his frog stared at her from the horizontal surface of the window. Greg’s face reappeared. “Come on, Jehosaphat,” he tugged at the frog. Someone knocked at the door to the music room, and Sara’s heart jolted. She was clambering through the window, limbs flailing like a turtle, before she knew what she was about, only to find herself drug off through the bushes by the front of her NASA jacket.
“Let me go, Greg,” she whispered crosssly. “I need to stand up, I can’t walk this fast--”
They slid into a ditch, she thought at first, but as she yelled it just kept going, a long sandy incline of dead leaves, until she ran out of breath shortly before hitting the bottom, and Greg hopped up onto an adjacent path, unfazed. Sara, of course, had an old bottle shoving against the side of her butt.
“What was--where?!” she scrambled up to catch up to him, rubbing the developing bruise.
“Shortcut!” Greg shook both fists in the air triumphantly.
“The leaves are falling--it’s summer,” she frowned up at the naked trees, before closing her eyes, squeezing the bridge of her nose, and taking a few slow breaths.
“Come on,” Greg drug her onwards, letting her arm go when she stumbled. When they came on the grave, it was human-sized, but the notebook-paper wrapped bundle in the bottom was smaller than her fist. The surrounding ground was covered in horseshoe prints, of all things.
“Okay,” said Greg, and whipped out the recorder.
“And where’s Wirt?” she circled the grave. There were only a few prints that looked like sneakers, no shovel, and no Wirt.
“We’re going to start now,” Greg nodded at the frog. It began to sing. Sara set her jaw, and raised the glass bottle she’d found to her lips to blow in time to Greg’s recorder. She did additional percussion with her nails on the side. This is what it sang:
Hark! from the tombs a doleful sound!
My ears attend the cry:--
Ye living all! come view the ground
Where you must shortly lie.
Princes! this clay must be your bed,
In spite of all your towers;
The tall, the wise, the reverend head
Must lie as low as ours.
Great God! is this our certain doom?
And are we still secure?
Still walking downward to our tomb,
And yet prepare no more!
Grant us the powers of quickening grace
To fit our souls to fly;
Then, when we drop this dying flesh,
We'll rise above the sky.
Once they’d finished, they lowered their heads.
“It was a good funeral,” Greg nodded.
Sara gave a wary glance at the frog, looked around again for Wirt, swallowing, then pushed most of the loose dirt back in the grave with her shoe. Greg stumbled back out of some bushes with a hubcap. He was brushing the leaves off. He handed it to Sara, who looked from it, to him, to the grave, then began shoving it in at the head of the grave with her foot. Greg vanished again--predictably, at this point--and reappeared again with a rock. He placed it carefully at the other end.
“That’s for her feet,” he told Sara, then, “Where has Wirt got to,” he put his hands on his hips again.
“I didn’t know your frog could sing,” Sara said, feeling oddly out of breath. She wondered whether she should sit, and wait for Wirt.
“All frogs can sing,” Greg rolled his eyes, and she shrugged.
“I’ve never even skipped school before.”
“Your attendance doesn’t matter,” Greg said loftily. “They’ve got Wirt.”
She blinked at him. “What? Who?”
“Well,” he took a deep, impressive breath. “ Someone. He’s not here.”
“That doesn’t mean--”
“Look!” Greg ran down the road. “The horse tracks go in this direction.”
“Horse tracks,” Sara repeated.
“An evil horse kidnapped Wirt,” Greg informed her.
“Why do you think that?” she let her eyes narrow. “Is that something that happens, here?”
“Yes.”
“...you’ve met horse kidnappers,” she repeated, just to be sure.
“Probably. They’re--”
“ Probably. ”
“Probably that way,” Greg pointed impatiently.
Sara scrabbled at her hair, groaning, then braced herself, shoulders back. “Well. He’s not here, there aren’t any footprints, and the only prints are from the horse. We won’t catch a horse, but we can see where it’s going.”
“I hope it kidnapped Wirt,” Greg jumped over to his frog, grabbing it around the middle.
“Hello,” a small voice said, near Sara’s ear, and she spun to frown around. “Ahem. Here, in the shadbush.”
“You’re a--hello,” Sara tried, feeling like a Disney princess, which led to a bizarre inclination to curtsey.
“I am a regulus calendula. A ruby-crowned kinglet,” the bird said crisply, and Sara was half relieved she hadn’t blurted “bird”, and half annoyed.
“I wasn’t wondering. Did you need something?”
“You don’t have a crown,” Greg pointed out.
The bird ruffled up to three times its previous tiny size, fluttering indignantly.
“I mean,” Sara sighed. “If it’s part of your introduction, of course I’ll remember, it’s just our friend--”
“Wirt’s been kidnapped,” Greg put in, with relish.
“--is missing, so I wasn’t really thinking about what kind of bird you were.”
“Hrmpf,” the bird turned away from them, flicking its tail.
“...we’ll be going, then,” Sara smiled stiffly, turning to follow the hoofprints.
“G’bye, Mr Ruby-Crowned Kinglet,” Greg called cheerfully.
“That doesn’t even make sense,” the bird fluttered to follow them. “You wouldn’t say Mr Human. And my name is Phoebe.”
“Hullo, Mrs Phoebe!” Greg waved his frog, and Sara groaned.
“Hello, Phoebe, I’m Sara,” she said, shrugging as she walked. “Did you happen to see what happened here? I’m sorry I was rude.”
“Hrm,” said Phoebe, zipping ahead, and then returning to land on Sara’s head. Her weight was barely noticeable. “Your friend seems nice. Bit of a whiner.”
“He is, isn’t he,” Greg sighed, shaking his head.
“Wirt’s all right,” Sara grimaced. “Did you see what happened? Did he just leave?”
“Hrm,” Phoebe flitted over to sit on Greg’s head. He went exaggeratedly crosseyed.
“Okay , we’re following the horse, then,” Sara strode ahead.
“He’s been kidnapped by an evil horse,” Greg explained again.
“What fun,” Phoebe chirped. “I’ll just tag along.”
Far along the road, Wirt raised his voice over the pounding hooves. “...and you’re sure I’ll be back in time?”
“Oh, sure,” the horse whinnied. “Remember, I know your friend. Frank.”
“Fred,” Wirt said automatically, clutching at the silvery bridle, and the mane that sometimes faded through his fingers like smoke.
“Fred,” the horse agreed.

Batman #332-335. February-May, 1980. By Marv Wolfman, Irv Novick, Frank McLaughlin, Don Newton, Steve Mitchell and John Celardo.
Robin decides to leave Batman's side, refusing to tolerate Talia's presence in the Batcave. Not giving much thought to Robin's decision, Batman investigates the Gregorian Falstaff problem and discovers that his foe is being bankrolled by an outside interest from a Swiss bank account. He deduces that Caroline Crown, Bruce Wayne's new secretary, has been feeding Falstaff Wayne Enterprises information and, going to see her, finds Ms. Crown with a mutate, who threatens to harm "Elizabeth" unless she keeps up the information supply. Batman is unable to best the mutate in battle and is knocked unconscious, while Caroline Crown flees.
The next day, Caroline Crown confesses to Bruce Wayne that her daughter Elizabeth is being held prisoner by Gregorian Falstaff in an upstate hospital. When Wayne confronts Falstaff in the latter's office, he discovers that Falstaff has bought up the mortgages on Wayne's Asian oil properties, making most of Wayne's assets virtually worthless. Bruce angrily refuses Falstaff's offer to work with him as his lackey.
Meanwihle, Robin goes to Catwoman for help with the Falstaff affair. That night, Talia tries to drug Batman and goes to Falstaff's office herself. Batman, who just pretended to be drugged, trails her to Falstaff's place and confronts the crooked man's thugs an army of mutates. When Batman defeats the monsters, he goes looking for Falstaff. Holding Elizabeth Crown hostage, Falstaff sends an energy-globe at Batman using a strange weapon, but Talia kicks him from behind into the globe and Falstaff disintegrates.
Talia explains that Falstaff once worked for her father, who gave him the globe-shooter. She then embraces and kisses Batman, just as Catwoman and Robin arrive at the place to investigate. Heartbroken, Catwoman goes away leaving Robin behind.
On the high seas, Archer Templeton thinks he has made an escape from Infinity Island, a twin-peaked volcanic isle in the middle of the ocean, by raft. But a red energy-globe from one of the island's peaks engulfs him and destroys him. In his raft, a small radio transmitter beeps on.
Days after the previous events, Catwoman tracks down a gang of crooks pulling a chemical warehouse robbery. She apprehends all but one, Joseph Walters, whom she traces back to Karlyle Krugerrand, who was Falstaff's former right hand. Krugerrand is apparently continuing Falstaff's work as he informs Walters that he and Falstaff were indeed working for another master.
Krugerrand then tries to use the chemicals and the electricity from a Gotham power station to transform several subjects into mutates. Catwoman battles Krugerrand and knocks him backwards as the equipment, powered beyond its limits, explodes and Krugerrand, Walters and the mutates are destroyed. Catwoman trudges off, suspecting that Krugerrand's and Falstaff's employer is Talia, who, unknown to her, is watching her leave the power station.
In Katmandu, Nepal, King Faraday receives the radio signal from Archer Templeton's transmitter, for which he has been waiting ten years.
Meanwhile, Batman, disguised as Karlyle Krugerrand, is allowed inside the Criminal Bank in Montfaucon, Switzerland, which handles cash for virtually all criminal organizations in the world. He learns that Falstaff did business with the bank, but his disguise is penetrated and he is wounded while escaping. Upon returning to the hotel he is staying at, Talia heals Bruce with her special salve. In the privacy of their room, he confides to her that Falstaff was hired to ruin Bruce Wayne, but he does not know why.
That night, Bruce and Talia face another assassination attempt, and decide that the best way to meet their next contact, one Captain Torrents, in Hong Kong is to cross the heavily-guarded Red Chinese border. They manage to do so, despite several perils. Bruce leaves Talia behind as he boards Torrents' junk, The Phoenix. But once on board, Bruce is locked into a room which is filled with sleep gas, and he falls victim to the fumes instantly.
Robin and Catwoman are present when Ronald Watkins is released from jail for spilling information about Gregorian Falstaff. Timothy Fox, who also goes free, is astonished to hear that Falstaff paid Watkins to raid the Wayne Foundation building, to beat Lucius Fox and intended to have him kill Timothy later. Upon release, Tim and Lucius have a heartfelt reunion.
Later, Commissioner Gordon contacts Robin and tells him that King Faraday has been tryig to contact Batman. Knowing that Batman is not currently in Gotham, Robin and Catwoman answer the summons to Shanghai, China. Once there, Faraday tells the two that his old partner, Archer Templeton, recently sent a radio signal as agreed upon ten years ago. But all that arrived with the transmitter was an empty raft with the word "Batman" scrawled on it. Since Batman could not be contacted, Faraday opted to try for Robin.
Faraday, Robin and Catwoman go to meet an informant, who is killed by an assassin that escapes. When Faraday is kidnapped, Catwoman decides to get some information from the local criminals and she takes Robin with her in disguise. In her civilain identity, Selina and his "partner" meet Chin Ho, a fence and dope smuggler knowledgeable about all Far Eastern crime. While in his shop, Ho tries to drug them unconscious, but only Robin falls for the trap. Selina tries to fight back, but she is outnumbered and easily defeated.
Moments later, Selina and Dick awaken to find themselves strapped to slabs. Chin Ho informs them that he will now have revenge on Catwoman for her past interference with his smuggling operations. He orders his aides to inject them with cocaine until they die of an overdose.
Batman awakens in a strange room on Infinity Island and is soon attacked by a horde of men, who seem strangely possessed. Unconscious again, the Dark Knight is dragged to another room where he is shown the two classes of lives on the island. A strange voice then offers Batman the option to either become one of his loyal followers or suffer as a slave in the mines. The voice also tells the Dark Knight it has been he who was behind the dealings of Gregorian Falstaff in Gotham City concerning Wayne Enterprises.
Meanwhile in Hong Kong, Catwoman and Robin escape from the clutches of Chin Ho and free a captured King Faraday. Later, the trio follow Faraday's lead and find themselves in a boat on the Indian Ocean, where they are captured by red energy globes and transported to the mines of Infinity Island.
Batman, seeing Robin, Faraday, and Catwoman in the mines becomes enraged and refuses the mysterious voice's entreaty to join him. Dumped with the other three heroes, Batman leads an escape from the mines and they, in turn, head toward the Golden Dome at the center of the island. Inside the dome, the quartet encounters Talia, who has begun to age uncontrollably. Talia states she must join with the mysterious voice as only he can halt the aging process she is experiencing. While Talia joins with the mastermind, Batman and the others have to confront several of the mutates that control the island.
A minute later, Talia emerges from behind a curtain, young again, hand in hand with her supposedly deceased father, Ra's al Ghul. Ra's then offers Batman the “touch of immortality” or instant death for himself and his friends.
Batman accepts Ra's al Ghul's invitation to join his ranks and receive the gift of immortality, much to the surprise of Robin, Catwoman, and King Faraday. As the trio of heroes is escorted to the mines, the Dark Knight is shown Ra's Lazarus Pit, where Batman refuses Ra's "touch of immortality". Ra's sets his mutates on Batman and, under sheer weight of numbers, the Dark Knight goes down.
Knowing Batman's agreement to join Ra's was a trick; Robin spearheads an escape from the mines with Catwoman and Faraday. Through directions given by a remorseful Talia, the trio arrive in time to help prevent Batman from being turned into one of the mindless mutates. As the quartet confronts Ra's, Dr. Saltzer arrives unexpectedly and shoots Talia. Angered, Ra's lashes out and kills Saltzer. Then, seeing no other option, the Demon's Head places his daughter in the Lazarus Pit to revive her.
After the short procedure, Talia is removed from the Pit, but when her first words after coming out of the pit are for the Batman and not her father, Ra's feels betrayed and again a confrontation ensues. The Dark Knight instructs the trio of heroes to round up the others on the island and leave as he and Ra's have a final battle above the Lazarus Pit.
The confrontation is long and even, until Batman is forced to dump Ra's into the pit to save himself. However, the demon arises aflame and insane from the pit. In his new state of mind and body, Ra's has the upper hand in the fight and as a last resort, Batman knocks Ra's into the pit again, this time igniting the pit and causing the twin island volcanoes to erupt; an eruption that pushes Infinity Island beneath the ocean. Batman is only able to escape barely thanks to Talia, who was waiting outside for him with a helicopter. On their journey back home, Batman gives in to exhaustion and passes out.
Days later in the penthouse above the Wayne Foundation, a recovering Bruce Wayne is being watched over by Dick and Alfred. After saying his farewells to Talia, Bruce is left to ponder the feelings Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle seem to have for one another. And finally, after lots of arguing about Dick leaving college, Bruce and his ward declare a temporary truce.
From DC Wikia
As far as Ra’s al Ghul stories go, this one is not trying too much to be different. Most of their encounters require a trap (usually through Talia), making Batman do the demon’s deed, eventually an offer and a duel. Ending with Ra’s death.
While it is sad that this seems to be the case with one of the best comic-book wirters of all time, Comic-book writers are usually inspired by books they read. We are like ten years apart from Ra’s first appearance, and you have to remember, comic-book shops were not what they are now. So re-telling stories was in a way acceptable.
Re-reviewing this story I completely forgot what happened to Archer Templeton, which is odd as this story started with him. I imagine he was rescued by Faraday.
Wolfman was writing these issues at the same time he was writing the first issues of New Teen Titans (and you may have already caught the easter egg in the form of H.I.V.E.). His portrayal of Robin here is also strange. But my guess is that Dick Grayson is better when he is not around Batman. And we can understand him. Batman leaves him in the dark most of the times and can never acknowledge his feelings. So, even though we know Dick Grayson is one of the most mentally stable Robins out there (next to Tim), it is my guess that working next to Batman added an extra anxiety that made him less effective. Under these parameters I would have left the Batcave as well. Furthermore, Robin couldn’t be more different than Batman. While Batman has to be convinced to have company, Robin is not afraid to ask other for help (and he usually needs it, come on Dick, did you really have to drink that drugged tea?).
Another small detail almost by the end, Batman is about to die and pretty much throws Ra’s to his death. Now, I know it was self-defense, but it felt like he killed him. Even worse, he had to do it twice. So Batman doesn’t kill, but he doesn’t really disagrees with killing someone that wants to kill him (and actually can).
Or perhaps he already knew the “Ra’s al Ghul story formula” and that he would eventually come back.
I give the arc a score of 7.25.

If I had any sort of takeaway from this (other than the fact that OtGW is a goddamn literary mélange), it might be something about the lantern.
The lantern and the tinder box are both magical sources of light that “blind” the user by promising the impossible, whether its immortality or godlike dogs. They have some similarities, but in The Tinder Box, it’s the protagonist rather than the antagonist who wields a magical macguffin.
Of course, he does get it by beheading a witch after they made a good faith deal that would have left him ridiculously wealthy anyway.
So after using the tinder box and its canine genies to become even wealthier still, the soldier decides that’s too boring and kidnaps the local princess while she sleeps. When he gets in hot water for that, he kills her parents, and the judge, and the jury. He marries the princess and crowns himself king, which the locals agree to under duress of magical mange.
Andersen wrote fairy tales full of the traditional tropes, but often lacking the traditional didacticism. However, in The Tinder Box, the newly well-off soldier gives money to the poor, because he remembers what it was like to be without a shilling. He saves the princess from imprisonment by an overprotective father, who forbids her to see go outside because it’s been prophesied that she’ll marry “a common soldier”. Maybe we just don’t have the whole story.
There are several episodes in OtGW with a twist ending directly related to the boys not having the whole story about a character they have encountered on their journey (Adelaide, Auntie Whispers, Jason Funderburker, even Beatrice).
OtGW draws a lot from traditional fairy tales, including their morality narratives, with its clear character growth and themes of communication, compassion, and overcoming prejudice. Wirt has to learn how check the facts, so that when he finally does face off against the Beast, he keeps asking questions until he gets the whole story. He doesn’t let the lantern’s promise blind him to the truth.
The Woodsman missed it all those years, even when it was literally under his nose. Aunties Whispers never thought of using the bell to save Lorna. They were trapped in the stories they told themselves, just like Wirt was trapped in the stories he told himself about Jason Funderburker (the human).
Meanwhile, Greg always knows what’s up:

Some OTGW Theories
So, I was watching "Over The Garden Wall" once again, and I started thinking... I'll put some questions here, then some possible answers. I'm not sure if any of this make sense, I just needed to get it out my mind.
1. What (or who) is the Beast? 2. Why his soul is not with him? 3. Why the Woodsman doesn't want the Beast near the lantern? 4. Why the Woodsman thought he wouldn't never see his daughter again? 5. Why the Beast don't take the lantern by force? 6. Why the lantern was with Woodsman in the first place? 7. Why people turn into trees? 8. Why it needs to be an oil made with a specific kind of tree? 9. Why the Beast never kills someone directly?
And there's some answers.
1. I don't know. The only thing I know is: He's a male and has a body made out of faces...?
2. It makes no sense for anyone (hero, villain or whatever) to put their soul, the very culmination of their being, into something so fragile as an oil lantern. It's like me putting my soul in a candle, if the flame dies, I die. So, he didn't do that. So what did it? Or who did it? Some possible scenarios:
He wasn't the Beast before. Probally as a human, he did a ritual or a deal to gain power and immortality. It turned him into a shadow. Having your soul in something so fragile as the light was the price.
He was created by someone, and that someone made this to be sure the Beast had some weakness.
The Beast has an enemy, or, at least, someone who didn't like him. So it was a curse (or something like that) put upon him, making his soul fragile as the light, his opposite.
He was a creature of light, but was corrupted by darkness. His lantern didn't need oil before, but after he let the darkness consume him, it started dying. That also could explain why the preference for trees who were people. The emotions.
3. I mean, yes, he believes his daughter is in the lantern, but... If you notice the obsession the Beast has... Pretty sure he wouldn't let the flame die. Which means the Woodsman could just let the Beast take care of it, or at least come near. Besides, I don't think the Beast would just randomly appear to the Woodsman and say "Here, keep it lit, I have your daughter". I don't think he would let a human even go near it, let alone give it to one. So, the Woodsman had the lantern before the Beast "took her soul". He knew about the lantern, probally because of the tavern and the song (the woman did say "We all know the Beast"). He probally didn't want the Beast to have it back (maybe was even thinking about blowing out the flame), so the Beast made up all the "Her soul is in the lantern" shit so the Woodsman would have a reason to keep the lantern lit.
4. Maybe his daughter was simply lost (maybe even in Wirt and Greg's world) and the Beast took advantage of that. Maybe the Beast kidnapped her (Which I think it's impossible, because he never laid one hand in Greg or Wirt or even Beatrice. He waited until Wirt gave up to act). Something happened to make her "vanish", and make the Woodsman think she was dead. I bet she was having her own adventures.
5. Yes, there's a scene where they fight, but even then, I don't see the Beast ripping it of the Woodsman's hands. He's more powerfull than most characters, then why he let's the Woodsman stay with it? He's always trying to make the Woodsman give it to him by "free" will, or trying to steal it while the man is not looking. And don't say to me "He can't touch it because it's light" because that's bullshit! A creature like him must be, at least, fifty years old, they made songs about him, for God's sake! Which means the Woodsman didn't always carry the lantern. And the lady in the tavern let it clear there was a time the Beast himself carried the lantern: "He who carries the dark lantern must be the Beast". So maybe he can't take the lantern by force. Remember the song? "For once your will begins to spoil". "Will" is the answer! For some reason, the Beast can't go against people's will! WHY?!
6. As I said, maybe his daughter liked aventures, and found the lantern. She brought it back home, the Woodsman recognized it and tried to dispose of it. His daughter lost herself in some place (again, maybe in Greg and Wirt's world), the Beast took advantage of it and tried to make the Woodsman give him the lantern. Maybe the people believed the Beast powers was in the lantern, so the Woodsman refused. The Beast then said "Let's make a deal. I'll put your daughter soul in the lantern, and as long the flame burns, she'll live inside the lantern". Again, there's no way the Beast would give his soul to someone, a normal human no less.
7. I also don't know, but it has something to do with free will, so I'm guessing it's because trees have no will? They don't walk, they don't talk, they only move if someone moves them, pretty much like someone with a "spoiled will". And lost people easily lose hope!
8. Maybe the emotions? The feeling of despair we feel when we lost all hope? The Beast can't go against will, soooo... a soul with no free will, a perfect tree. The victims souls are still there, but have no hope, no will.
9. He waits until they turn into trees (I think they aren't really dead), then until the Woodsman make some oils. He could just dispose of the Woodsman and continue his life(?).
Those theories may not make sense, but, hey, I’m not an expert! I could be (and probally am) wrong. But whatever, just want some answers.

Chapter 2
It was clear that the world outside the door was far different than the Ruins. Cold winds rushed to them as soon as the door was opened, causing Wirt to try and bundle closer into his cloak. A blanket of snow covered the land and ended just at the edge of the door.
“Hooray! Snow day!” said Greg as he bounded towards the snow.
Wirt sighed and tried his best to ignore his brother. Leave it to Greg to forget they just had to fight the only friendly face they’ve met down here.
Greg did not fight back, actually. Once Toriel saw that Greg wouldn’t fight back, she turned her attention to Wirt. Once Greg convinced Wirt not to fight back, she ended the fight. She had allowed them to leave, and asked that they try not to contact her again. That didn’t change the fact that Greg had tried to call her every five seconds as they left the Ruins.
The sounds of snapping branches behind him shook Wirt out of his thoughts.
“Greg, come on, we’re leaving,” said Wirt.
“I know!” said Greg, from right in front of him.
Wirt’s head snapped from Greg to behind him again. No one was there.
“Wow, that was a pretty big branch,” said Greg. “Someone really strong must have snapped it.”
Wirt pulled Greg up. Greg scrambled to grab his frog.
“Come on Greg, we’re getting out of here as soon as possible.”
Whether he liked it or not, Greg was his responsibility, and Wirt was going to make sure he got home safe.
“Kay,” said Greg. “Are you sure we can’t go talk to the guy following us first?”
Wirt started to run. He only slowed down as they reached a large gate.
“Hello, humans. Two of you, huh?”
“Hiya mister!” Greg squirmed under Wirt’s arm as he put down the frog and held out his hand.
“hey kid. sorry, no handshakes today. left my whoopee cushions back at my checkpoint.”
“Whoopee!”
Wirt spun around. Behind him was a skeleton. It was not a particularly scary skeleton, Wirt realized. He was short and round, wearing a hodgepodge of clothing that put what Wirt was wearing to shame. His teeth were stretched into a wide grin that hardly moved as he spoke.
“My name’s Greg, and this is Wirt, and this is my frog Alexander Hamilton, but I’m thinking of changing it,” said Greg.
“the name’s sans, nice to meet ya,” said sans. “now, we were on the lookout for humans, so you better—“
“SANS!”
“already?” sans asked. “okay, go ahead and go through that gate. i’ll think of…something.”
“You’ll think of something?” Wirt asked.
“yeah, relax. i have some nice lamps you can hide behind.”
The gate bars weren’t big enough to block the four of them out. Without any other choice, Wirt ran through them.
There was a lamp out there. And even more surprisingly, it was human shaped. Not Wirt shaped, it was too short for that. Not Greg shaped, it was too thin for that.
sans muttered under his breath before he turned back to the others. “alright, maybe you can hide in my checkpoint?”
Wirt didn’t even get the chance. Before he could move, something was behind him.
“sup bro?” sans asked.
“YOU KNOW WHAT’S SUP BROTHER!” The newcomer snapped. “YOU STILL HAVEN’T RECALIBRATED YOUR PUZ—“
The newcomer’s eyes fell onto the three and he jumped back.
It was another skeleton. Much taller and angled than sans was, yet Wirt still didn’t feel bone-chilling terror at the sight of him. He was dressed in some strange armor, topped with an orange scarf that hovered behind him like cape.
“SANS!” The newcomer snapped. “ARE THOSE HUMANS?”
“uh…i think that’s a froggit, actually.”
The frog croaked.
“I’m a human!” Greg spoke up. “My name’s Greg and that’s Wirt and that’s my frog Thomas Jefferson but I’m thinking of changing it—”
“SANS! YOU FINALLY CAUGHT A HUMAN! AND TWO OF THEM! I’M SO PROUD OF YOU!” The newcomer said.
“uh…sure…”
The newcomer cleared his throat. Wirt wondered if he had one. “ATTENTION, HUMANS! YOU SHALL NOT PASS THIS AREA! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL STOP YOU! I WILL THEN CAPTURE YOU! YOU WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE CAPITAL! AFTER THAT! I’M NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENS! IN ANY CASE, CONTINUE…ONLY IF YOU DARE! NYEH HEH HEH!”
They reached the next town by sunset. It was a tiny thing that is more farmland than houses, but that was not what intrigued Frisk.
There were skeleton monsters. Hundreds of them, really, disguised in costumes of pumpkin held together by straw. Frisk recognized them by the occasional gap that reveals bone, but more by their speech patterns.
They called for help, and were passed from one skeleton to the next until they reach the Pottsville Town City Commissioner, the biggest and meanest-looking of the group. He took a long look at Frisk, a longer look at the Cat, and welcomed them both to the party.
They also found the bluebird again. She kept her distance from the whole thing until Frisk invited her over. Even then, she was noticeably uncomfortable.
“Why are you even here? These guys are giving me the creeps,” said the bluebird.
Frisk shrugged.
Their a bit weird, but their really nice! They add in the notebook and show to her.
The bluebird made a face.
“Oh. You can’t talk, huh.”
There was a hint of disappointment in her tone, but Frisk is used to it, so they shrugged.
“I assure you, I am more than capable of speaking for the both of us,” said the Cat. There was a hint of something they did not recognize in his tone.
“Listen,” said the bluebird. “You’re still lost, right? I’m on my way to find Adelaide, the Good Witch of the Pasture. Maybe you can come with me, and maybe she could help you out too?”
The Cat made a noise as he starts to clean behind his ears dismissively.
“Forgive me for not being entirely trusting of women who say they have magic,” said the Cat.
Maybe she can help us find the beast, Frisk wrote down and showed to the both of them.
“What, you’re looking for that thing?” The bluebird asked.
Think he’s lost, like us, Frisk wrote.
The bluebird was silent for a minute.
“Well, you’re free to follow me, if you want,” she said quietly.
Great! Frisk wrote. My name’s Frisk, and the Cat doesn’t really have a name. What’s your name?
“Beatrice.”
The Snowdin Forest turned out to be easily navigable, even with the two skeletons trying to capture them. Greg handled the monsters, un-decorating the Gryphon and pretending to laugh at Snowdrake’s jokes.
Or maybe that was legitimate laughter. There were too many puns in the Underground for Wirt’s taste.
Wirt, meanwhile, worked on the puzzles. It was a generosity to call them puzzles, really. He was pretty sure the hardest one was the junior jumble. With puzzles like that, and with the fact that sans was never too far behind in case they needed some warmer clothes or help running away from the Jerry, it was hard to think of the skeleton brothers as anything but distractions.
Except for the fact that they were trying to kidnap them.
Toriel had tried to kidnap them, in a way. The ones that did not fight them would kidnap them in the end.
Wirt really hated the Underground.
Despite his bitter feelings, he was rather surprised to see Snowdin Town. It was a pleasant-looking town, with small buildings and Christmas decorations that lit the narrow streets. It looked too nice for a place in the Underground.
There was an inn. He didn’t quite know how time passed in the Underground, but it had been a long time since they had slept. The Snowed Inn—
Wirt rolled his eyes. It would have to do.
“Come on, Greg,” said Wirt. “We’ll stay here for the night and think about what to do in the morning.”
“It’s noon,” said Greg, but he still followed Wirt in. He was asleep before he was.
Frisk, on a general principle, did not like schools. They had too many bad memories of school, from the students that teased them to the teachers that let them get away with it. But when they saw the schoolhouse, and figured out that it was surprisingly easy to get in, they decided it was not a bad place to stay for the night. The Cat and Beatrice had not been happy about it, but they learned to deal with it when Ms. Langtree served the lunch meal.
Potatoes and molasses healed a surprising amount.
There were animal monsters. They made up most of the student population. They are more animal-like than the animal monsters in the Underground, the only thing that makes them look different from just an animal being their clothes.
They were silent when they speak. Frisk didn’t mind; so are they. Ms. Langtree did mind; she can teach and go on about without interruption.
When they do speak, it is with music. The music is not perfect, as inexperienced paws and claws play instruments that were not designed for them. But when they perform together it is a celebration. Even Beatrice recognized it. It does not take much work for Frisk to show them that everyone would recognize it.
They never figured out what happened to the gorilla monster that was running around, or that no good two-timing Jimmy. They school stays open.
Greg woke up before Wirt. This was not hard, considering they were only asleep for about an hour. The bunny lady made a point of paying him back for the room considering they barely used it. Greg spent the money on Nice Cream across the street.
“Come on, Lucinda,” said Greg to the frog, but mostly to himself. He would have to find a better name for the frog later. “Let’s go find Papyrus.”
The frog croaked in support.
It’s not hard to find Papyrus. He’s right at the end of the town, as the road becomes covered in fog. He was not hard to find, but he was hard to see. Greg wondered if that was intentional.
“HUMAN,” Papyrus took in a deep breath before he continued. “ALLOW ME TO TELL YOU ABOUT SOME COMPELX FEELINGS. FEELINGS LIKE…THE JOY OF FINDING ANOTHER PASTA LOVER. THE ADMIRATION FOR ANOTHER’S PUZZLE SOLVING SKILLS. THE DESIRE TO HAVE A COOL, SMART PERSON THINK YOU ARE COOL. THESE FELLINGS…THEY MUST BE WHAT YOU ARE FEELING RIGHT NOW.”
“You’re not wrong!” said Greg. And, because he wasn’t quite sure what Papyrus wanted but recalled that it was the same way Wirt would talk about Sara, “Does that mean you wanna go on a date with me?”
“WHAT!!? F-FLIRTING?!! SO YOU FINALLY REVEAL YOUR ULTIMATE FEELINGS!!! WELL, I AM A SKELETON WITH VERY HIGH STANDARDS!!”
“Well, I think Lucinda and I could make spaghetti if we really tried,” said Greg. The frog ribbited in agreement.
“OH NO!!! YOU’RE MEETING ALL OF MY STANDARDS!!! L-LET’S DATE LATER! AFTER I CAPTURE YOU!”
The fight began.
It was easy to dodge Papyrus’ attacks. Very easy. Most times, Greg did not have to try. However, he quickly ran out of things he could do to escalate the battle. He would have to rely on his mercy.
Papyrus noticed that.
“SO, YOU WON’T FIGHT BACK?” Papyrus asked. “THEN LET’S SEE IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE MY FABLED BLUE ATTACK!!!”
The Blue Attack also wasn’t hard to dodge. Greg learned from the cute Doggo with the bad eyesight how to remember blue stopsigns, and that’s all Papyrus is throwing at him. He doesn’t even have to move.
Until his Soul sinks to the ground.
“YOU’RE BLUE NOW. THAT’S MY ATTACK. NYEH HEH HEH!”
When Wirt woke up, he couldn’t find Greg. It was only about ten minutes after Greg had left, but he did not realize that at the time. He rushed out of the inn, ignoring whatever the bunny monster was saying about payment. He ran through the streets of Snowdin wildly, trying to look for any sign of Greg…
And he found him casually leaving a rather large shed, the frog in the kettle he used for a hat.
“Greg, where were you?”
“I lost against Papyrus, so he kidnapped me,” said Greg. “But he made the bars too big and he forgot to lock the door so I broke out. I’m a jailbird now, Wirt!”
Wirt wasn’t sure if he should feel relieved or annoyed. He settles for focusing on the one thing he knows: Papyrus was going to capture them. He may not be very effective at it, but he could.
“Alright, fine. I’ll fight him.”
Wirt didn’t realize he was wandering so deep into the fog it was already too late. He was ready to turn around when he saw a figure in front of him.
“HELLO BIGGER HUMAN! ARE YOU HERE TO FIGHT ME TOO?”
“You bet!” Greg said. “He’s way stronger than I am!”
“WHAT?!!! SMALLER HUMAN?!! YOU BROKE OUT OF MY PRISON?!!” Papyrus asked. “NEVER MIND! LET ME PROVE TO YOU JUST HOW STRONG AND POPULAR I AM!”
Papyrus blocks the path.
“Try flirting with him, Wirt!” Greg said.
“YOU TOO?! WHY DO HUMANS FLIRT SO MUCH?!!”
“No, I don’t—” Wirt starts.
WELL, I SUPOSE IT IS VERY PROBABLE THAT THE GREAT PAPYRUS HAS MANY ADMIRERS! BUT LET’S DATE LATER! AFTER I KIDNAP YOU!”
Wirt felt a sinking feeling in his chest. His Soul dropped to the ground.
“YOU’RE BLUE NOW. THAT’S MY ATTACK! NYEH HEH HEH!!!”
Wirt willed himself to pull his Soul off the ground. The next wave of bone attacks started up. A few collided into Wirt’s side before he could adequately dodge them.
“Jump, Wirt, jump!” said Greg from the sidelines.
Wirt jumped. His Soul followed him. He landed just as a slow moving bone crossed under his feet.
“HMM…I WONDER WHAT I SHOULD WEAR…” said Papyrus. “THE DATING RULEBOOK DOES EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF CLOTHING…”
Another wave on bone attacks rushed towards Wirt. He jumped over it.
“DO I HAVE ANY MTT ANIME POWDER BACK AT HOME I CAN RUB BEHIND MY EARS?? DO I HAVE EARS???”
“Hey Papyrus!” Wirt said. “You still wanna go on that date? Because I imagine I can’t go if you kidnap me!”
“I DO SEE THAT, HUMAN!!!” said Papyrus. “BUT IMAGINE HOW MUCH MY POPULARITY WILL SKYROCKET IF I DO CAPTURE YOU!! UNDYNE WILL BE REALLY PROUD OF ME!! THE KING WILL TRIM A HEDGE IN THE SHAPE OF MY SMILE!!! MY BROTHER WILL….WELL, HE WON’T CHANGE THAT MUCH.”
Wirt only caught some of that. More bones launched themselves towards him with every thought.
“I WILL HAVE MANY ADMIRERS!! BUT…WILL ANYONE LIKE ME AS MUCH AS YOU DO??”
“I will!” said Greg.
Bones as tall as Wirt filled the area. Wirt jumped, and found himself sailing in the air. He soared over them, and landed back in the snow. His Soul landed with a thud.
“I really like you, Papyrus,” said Wirt. “So maybe we can just forget about this human capturing nonsense and go on a date?”
Papyrus hesitated. He looked down at the ground as he weighed his options.
“SORRY HUMAN…BUT SURRENDER OR FACE MY SPECIAL ATTACK!!!”
Papyrus stepped back as he unveiled his attack.
The dog looked back up at him.
“WHAT THE HECK! THAT’S MY SPECIAL ATTACK!”
Papyrus threw a few of the smaller bones towards the dog in annoyance. It scampered off, special attack in mouth and tail wagging wildly.
“Wirt! Wirt, Wirt!” said Greg. “Here, eat one of these, it’ll make you feel better!”
Greg ran out into the battlefield and took something out of his teapot hat. Wirt only had a second to really look at it. It looked like some kind of cinnamon roll, carefully pressed into the shape of a rabbit.
“SIGH…HERE’S AN ABSOLUTELY NORMAL ATTACK.”
More bones emerged from the ground, forming a forest around them. Wirt shoved the cinnamon bunny in his mouth, grabbed a hold of Greg, and jumped.
There was a horse monster. His name is Fred. He thinks he’s a lot meaner than he actually is. He does have a tendency to steal, however.
There were other humans. Frisk was less interested in them. They were very interested in Frisk, however. There were the customers of the tavern, who scrambled to label Frisk as something they weren’t. They settled on the young pilgrim, and Frisk decides to keep it because it does not assume what gender they are. There’s Mr. Quincy and Miss Margueritte and Frisk is disappointed to find out that they aren’t ghost monsters. They send Frisk away with some gold coins and some tea. The tea feels familiar for reasons that Frisk can’t quite place.
There were frog monsters. They are far better dressed than the Froggits of the Ruins. Frisk, the Cat, and Beatrice hop aboard their ship and are carried to the pasture. The band was nice.
They saw the Woodsman once more. They don’t know if the Woodsman saw them, however. He seemed very distracted.
None of them, however, seem to know if they are monsters. If they did slow down enough to see what Frisk was saying, they would usually interpret monster to mean a very bad thing, get offended, and wouldn’t wait for Frisk to explain what they meant. It was mostly the older not-quite-monsters who did this.
“I don’t know what you expect,” said the Cat while they were on the boat. “If you asked if I were a monster I wouldn’t have an answer for you.”
Frisk asked if the Cat was a monster. The Cat gave Frisk a lazy glare but did not say much else.
Frisk asked if Beatrice were a monster.
“What?” Beatrice was distracted when they asked. She had been distracted the entire boat ride. “No, I….I used to be human you know.”
Frisk hadn’t. They turned their head to the side, to indicate how they want to hear more.
“Well, that’s why I’m going to Adelaide’s. Not much else to say about it,” said Beatrice. “Listen, kid…are you sure you can’t just leave this Beast business behind you and try and find your way home on your own?”
Frisk tried to answer. They try to write down that they don’t know where home is to begin with, and they need to get back to the Underground. They try to write that if the Beast really is a monster, or if there are any monsters in this place at all, they could help.
But Beatrice notices that they’re writing stuff down and answers before they can even finish a word.
“Great, then we’re skipping Adelaide’s, maybe we can go back to Pottsfield, you like skeletons, right?”
She flew closer in to the crowd before they could answer back. The Cat gave Beatrice a steady glare, but did not say anything.
“Wow,” said Greg. “Nice shortcut.”
“thanks.”
The area where sans had taken him looked like a place that his dad had said he shouldn’t go into. However, it was so cozy and warm that Greg not think of a reason why he couldn’t go in. Even the monsters looked friendly. Even the man on fire at the front looked friendly.
sans guided him up to the bar in the front. He had to help pull him up on the high barstool.
“what sounds good, bucko?”
“Hmm...potatoes!”
“we got fries, kid.”
“That’ll do!”
“you heard it grillbz. double order of fry.”
The bartender gave as steady a glare as one without a face could give towards sans, but left to the kitchen. The three sat in silence. Even Ross Valory the frog was silent.
“so kid. been meaning to ask you something,” said sans.
The atmosphere suddenly grew very heavy. Ross Valory ribbited, but with something Greg didn’t understand.
But he liked sans, so he decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. “What’s up?”
“well, there’s been something i’m worried about,” said sans. “Papyrus told me something interesting the other day. when no one’s around, a talking flower likes to show up and talk to him. offer him things; flattery, advice…predictions. think someone might be using one of them echo flowers in the Waterfall to play a trick on him. and if i’m being real honest…i think it might be a human.”
Greg thought hard, and hummed as he did.
“Well, it can’t be either of us, because we just got here,” said Greg. “Were there any other humans in the Underground before us?”
sans sighed before he answered.
He grabbed the ketchup bottle off of the bar and drank it whole. Greg always wanted to do that. But Dad said that there was too much sugar in ketchup and it didn’t taste sweet anyway.
“Well, I don’t know about any Echo Flowers, but I’ll keep an eye out for that one Golden Flower that likes to play pranks on people,” said Greg. “Thanks for the eats, sans.”
Sans was silent when Greg walked away. The frog croaked and tugged on his overalls. Greg looked behind him just in time to see the absolutely bewildered expression on sans’ face.
Somehow, he didn’t find that funny.
