This is not a book review of A Little Life

So I read A Little Life and while I was gripped, I did not love it and the further away I get from reading, the more annoyed I about a few narrative choices. Some of them are what everyone else feels pissed off about but I have two that I keep coming back to that just seem so fucking unlikely to me: spoilers ahead.

Annoyed by the lack of women characters that were anything other than accessories, even Julia who was just kinda there. Not because I think Jude would be saved by women's inherent trauma-healing abilities or something, but because it's just really fucking unlikely? Also unlikely that no one he knew was also a survivor of some form of abuse and might have had a flicker of recognition, might have said something to him or to his friends?

Harold's narrative at the end in which he lists off the litany of people who died. Really pissed about Andy and Richard especially. Felt very cheap.

The embolism was so dumb. Just straight stupid. Difficult and unreliable besides being absurd.

I'm not annoyed as much as some about the insane wealth aspect. Jude worked really hard on his isolation and for this story to work he had to have the means to shape his life into a kind of bespoke safe space so he very rarely had to do things he did not want to do including Talk About It (until not talking about it got in the way of keeping Willem and even then it was not to help himself but to manipulate).

Ok, so. The two things: hearing survivor stories and the law.

Everyone was trying so hard to get Jude to talk to a therapist. Did anyone think that maybe what he needed was to listen to someone else? Is the point supposed to be that Willem is such a dunce that he did not consider doing some reading and maybe sharing what he's read? Did neither of them ever consume media of any kind because CSA and its effects on survivors is, while not exactly everywhere, it is very much out there and kind of difficult to avoid in the west. Fairly sure Willem might have done a film or a play? A NYT bestselling book everyone read? Representations on this theme in art shows? In music? In the news and in documentaries? There's no way Jude's bubble was that airtight. There's no way Andy was not talking to his own therapist about Jude, about his refusal to talk, or about how to get through to a stubborn self-destroyer such as he.

Jude did not Talk About It in a therapeutic sense at any point and that's emphasised as a thing that he regrets, that he feels he should have done so with Ana or around then, and that he thinks it is too late now. But I find it very difficult to believe he could have gone 50 years of his life without hearing, even incidentally, from other survivors of CSA. The sense that he was singular in his experience, that he was somehow meant for the abuse, that the cause of it was some inherent thing about his own person is common among survivors. It is also horseshit and easy to disprove with examples. It's also something I felt I wanted to confront him with myself when he was defending his refusals: do you think other children who have suffered similar also deserved it? Do you think they were not told they were made for it? Do you think CSA is that rare? Do you have a theory of mind for the perpetrators and a notion that they chose to hurt a child, and that it is wrong to do so (yes, even you)?

Also, he studied law. He did not specialise in criminal law (or seem remotely interested in it) but can someone studying law actually avoid learning about laws surrounding CSA almost completely? No triggers for him there? No thoughts on justice regarding other children? No pause in his self-flagellation to consider for one moment that maybe he is not to blame but the perpetrators? No? Just never came up anywhere?

Anyway, it was beautifully written in places and I enjoyed the tender odes to love, life, family and friendship.

just. . .do y'all remember when Polin actually loved each other in our fandom? do you remember when our posts were about how sweet they were together? when it was about how they were on one another's teams? when it was story after story and post after post of polin against the world? of 'I like you' 'I like you too'? of 'Is life meant to be this happy?' 'I think so'? Do you remember when we were all about how much Colin loved Penelope and Penelope loved Colin? When the biggest narrative was that they saw one another, made one another brave, brought out the best in each other? When the mirror was more than just a sex scene and was also a metaphor for what they saw in each other and how they reflected one another? When they were kind to each other? When we were kind to them as characters? When they were encouraging? When they were affectionate and loving and tenderhearted and messy and silly and loving with one another? When Penelope chose Colin at every turn and Colin chose her?

Where is it? Where is the love for our couple? Be honest, wanting Colin to grovel and suffer isn't for Polin fans. It's for Pen stans. Because us Colin fans are shown time and time and time again that it's okay to call a character we love an idiot, want him egregiously punished or humiliated, to see nothing good in his character at all. So who else is it meant for? I miss when we cared about them. I miss when there was a place we could go that was about their romance and tenderness. I miss when it wasn't just straight up hating on him, or us obsessed with Penelope getting with other characters, or thinking he's less than.

We have one of the *best* Male Love Leads in the entire series. And if you don't think that way. . .I just don't understand why you claim to ship this ship. We have an amazing pairing. A wonderful couple. A couple who cares about each other, a couple who builds one another up, a couple that are friends, a couple that has passion and happiness and so much potential.

Do you remember our gifsets gushing about how much he cared for her? Do you remember our metas about how they could bloom and flourish around one another? When we looked at how Colin was hypervisible but ultimately unheard and how Penelope was invisible but the loudest voice in the ton and sighed about how they fit so well with one another? Do you remember when Penelope was proud to have Colin as a partner and he showed her off at every turn? Do you remember when it wasn't a scorecard? When it wasn't about suffering and was about tenderness? Do you remember when they LOVED each other in our fandom? Do you remember when we loved them?

I remember.

And I miss it. I miss it so much.

The Concept of a Perfect World

What does it mean to live in a perfect world?

Every universe, no matter how perfect they seem, will always be imperfect. The God who created them may be the perfect one here, but it's not like the worlds he makes will turn out as great and spectacular as he is. It's laughable, to say the least. The irony of it all is just so, so laughable.

In the Void Between Universes, resides people. Living, breathing human beings made out of flesh and blood, floating around, monitoring each universe.

None of them are familiar with the concept of a perfect world.

Hopping from world to world, a group of people who have sworn to destroy each and every one of those worlds they keep coming in and out of. Each having their own reason to even be in such a group. Each having their own pain that they may share, yet they don't say anything about it, as if they feel like they shouldn't care about such sensitive stuff like that at the moment.

None of them are familiar with the concept of a perfect world.

A girl who's main interest is clocks, a math teacher who always seeks knowledge to keep and to spread, a daughter of a God who tries to fit in somehow, a girl trying to find a reason as to why rain keeps falling in her dark and gloomy world, a trio trying to chase away the stars rather than wish upon them.

None of those people know the concept of a perfect world.

Not even a writer would know such a concept.

Not even a reincarnation of a Goddess would know such a concept, surely.

Not even the God of Universes himself know the concept of a perfect world, despite being "perfect" himself.

Not even I—a third party watching two groups clash each other with so much hatred and fury in their eyes—know anything of a concept of a perfect world.

And frankly, such a concept sounds stupid.

Idiotic.

Impossible.

Too much of a stretch.

If not even a God can create a perfect world, then surely enough not even someone like me can do that.

Every world, every universe is bound to be imperfect—filled with the most rotten of people.

I see people disregard each other despite the fact that they should care about each other more. I see people get disregarded by their own family for who they love and what they identify as. I see things like racism, murder over the most pathetic things, bullying, pointless bickering on the internet, etcetera.

And honestly, all of that left me to feel empty.

Because in every universe, in every world...it's all the same.

Even if there's at least a small fraction of hope and beauty in a specific world, it'll all be gone in an instant.

And that's stupid.

That isn't fair to me.

Can I shape a more better world than all of the ones I've visited so far?

...I don't know.

And to be honest, I don't want to know.

I don't want to play God either.

An imperfect world will always be imperfect.

And a perfect world?

That'll never exist.

Saw a post with cool robot xenomorphs on the dash and was zooming in trying to figure out if it was a 3d model or painted because some parts sorta looked painted and it made me wonder how the artist's process was to get it that smooth and I click their gallery and it's just AI art. Any interest I had in technique just vanished immediately. But bc of this I want more handdrawn robots on my dash so if you guys know any cool robot artists on here that actually draw the shapes they use themselves let me know

Immediately Would proabably be asking very invasive questions and making alot of people effected by the darkest day VERY uncomfortable if he doesn’t contain his curiosity and excitement from boiling over the brim.

I mean, come on, natural (somewhat) pokemon-human fusions? How could he NOT be this enthusiastic about this discovery!

If he manages to keep his composure you can be sure he will whisk some people away into his lab, considering his abilities when it comes to traveling space and time/realities, it’s entirely possible for him to jsut stumble upon the world of the Dynamorphs by accident. In which he could either A. Freak the fuck out. B. Kidnap people (aka the easy way).

Or he could also manipulate and pull the strings to make some of the Dynamorphs come into the lab on their own accord. Which is the more long winded and difficult route, but almost equally as fun as kidnapping.

Now if he were in the world of the Dynamorph Au, it’d likely be a different story? I don’t think he would be as he usually is at first, only an intense curiosity about the possibilities of humans fusing their DNA with Pokémon and studying the results. But when he sees what’s happened in galar something jsut unlocks inside of him. Real Pokémon-human fusions. He’s more than capable to take them in as patients/subjects. He already has his lab. So when he offers a few of the people affected to come and be his patients and possibly see if there might be a cure, many just flock towards him like sheep to their beloved shepherd. Of course the experiments start our normal-ish, docile at first. But over time something just keeps churning and churning inside of his mind, as he, over time, lets himself slip more and more, and his experiments become crueler and crueler. Eventually slipping into the Fuse we all know and love (?)
