They were! Distant ancestors of the platypus, Ancient Romans did lay eggs, but were also warm-blooded and produced milk to feed their romalings! A common misconception is that the teats shown in Ancient Roman artwork produced milk — just like platypi, Ancient Romans’ milk secreted right out of the skin, like sweat! Palaeontologists widely agree that the teats were vestigial :). As for the eggs, we don’t know too much about them, but we can infer from their close cousins, the Ancient Greeks, their eggs were very important to them, and would sometimes be decorated and kept for display (pictured below).
