some initial thoughts about heaven's vault (now that i've played more than, like, two minutes of it)
i'm very intrigued by the art style - the scenery is absolutely beautiful, but the people are all, like, stop motion or just low animation frame water color? it's a fascinating contrast and i appreciate how it gets across the important elements of what's going on without (presumably) being too difficult/expensive to create
there must be an absolutely insane amount of dialogue in this game, considering that the option to talk to my robot dude (i'd call it a friend or buddy but uh i get the feeling the player character doesn't actually care about robots, which is an alien feeling for me) comes up every like three seconds, and there are so many different options for shaping how the conversation goes
in fact, it feels like there's just slightly too many options so the dialogue didn't get polished for ultimate smoothness all the time (sometimes people respond in a way that i squint at because it would make way more sense to have been a response to a different dialogue choice than the one i actually chose), but honestly this feels like an extremely big game dialogue-wise so, you know, i'll take an incredibly small amount of unpolished feeling
the language bit is fun so far - i already have assumptions about how certain symbols work, and i like that you can go back and change your translations until everything lines up correctly, plus i don't know if i just got it right in one and if i would've been given another chance to translate it if i'd gotten it wrong, but i already got 'holy emperor' from the brooch at the beginning, so i'm able to extrapolate a decent amount about other words i've run into
i really gotta change out joycons, though, the one i have is definitely making me move weirdly and making it hard to do translations smoothly, plus i had a very weird moment when i was trying to leave the rice moon where i went down a path, the camera zoomed way out to show off some pigs for a long time, and then it came back to me walking the opposite direction of what i'd been doing, so, you know, tech issues are fun
definitely a game that has longer, slower pacing than chants of sennaar, but now's the time for me to bite into a game like that so i'm having a good time
(oh! also sailing is fun, even if i still find myself instinctively trying to move with a joystick instead of shoulder buttons - you know, all of the one time i have sailed so far, obviously i should have the muscle memory instantly, hahaha)

Hoo boy, an open invitation to ramble about something that gets my brain excited? I hope you won't regret this. (Also, thank you, Milk :>)
Today we're going to be talking about Deb Cook!!!
Deborah Cook, as she is usually credited in films, is the head of LAIKA's costume department. She has worked on every LAIKA film that has been made, from Coraline (2009) to the upcoming Wildwood (2025).
The thing about stop-motion animation is that there is a massive amount of planning that needs to be worked out before the actual filming process even starts. Part of this is the costume designs for all the puppets, so that they fit into the world and can be used as vessels for a cohesive story.
Cook does a lot of research into historical elements that can be used in costumes, as well as using computers and collaborating with other people in the art department to create her own version of textiles that are perfect for the character. She takes her job very seriously, and works to consider what each character's personality is so she can create a fitting look for them.
But, the!! The thing is, these puppets are generally about eight to twelve inches tall!! So you can't just go to a craft store and buy any old fabric, because the weave might be too rough, or when a camera is focussed on a piece of clothing so small the colors are distorted. So there is a necessary level of detail that must be adhered to, otherwise the final product will be kind of disastrous. You can't just make tiny jeans out of regular denim, you have to find a fabric that looks like denim, but is light enough that it'll be flexible when placed on a tiny puppet.
Now, there are a lot of insanely talented people who create all sorts of miniatures and have come up with ingenious solutions to this that can be pointed out. HOWEVER, a great deal of these are because of how much work LAIKA has put into that field of art in the last seventeen years.
In Coraline, some of the costumes were made out of a child's sock. A sock. And it worked because Deb Cook is a fantastic and dedicated artist who works really hard to do her best in literally everything. But, now that LAIKA has had over a decade of experience and accolades and new highly clever artists joining them, they have come up with many new ways to use technology to help.
But Deb Cook is an artist and she will go out of her way to make something look as authentic as possible. For the iconic beetle crest on Kubo's clothing in Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), she dyed rice paste, painted the fabric, and then carefully washed it off to leave the image.
So, after all of that, and the meticulous attention given to every thread, you must remember that they have to animate all this. That means rigging in skirts and weighted sleeves and armature in capes. Each and every piece of clothing, in addition to needing to be replicated or else durable enough to be used for the two or so years required to make a stop-motion film, must be controlled down to the tiniest motion. In addition, the costume department she manages has to be able to make repairs or tiny alterations when something is damaged or an animator needs to get at the inner workings of a puppet.
There are so many more things that need to be considered in stop-motion versus live action, since the majority of the materials and designs are made from scratch in the studio.
And yet, despite all this, the woman hasn't won any awards

大家好! I found an anago and unagi donburi at a restaurant and asked Pa whether he wanted to try it. He did; on top of that, he asked to try something new - to support our government's push to go green, instead of driving to the mall, he wanted to take the bus and train. Of course I said yes. Pa hardly takes public transport so we took it as a challenge and an adventure. I looked up bus routes and told him which bus to take and when to get off at the bus interchange (or depot). I'd meet him there, walk with him to the train station and take the train with him. Happy to say, we made it to the mall and restaurant and Pa did more walking than he normally does.

We ordered okra with sesame dressing and our anago unagi donburi. The okra whetted up our appetites so when the donburi arrived, we just tucked in after taking photos. Unagi is yummy but anago holds its own against this popular eel. Flakey, delicate and melt in your mouth tender, it was equally delicious. We liked that they didn't overwhelm the rice with sauce. I'm definitely coming back. We also discovered a restaurant which specialises in grilled fish next door that looks pretty good. After exploring the mall and doing more walking, it was time to head home. We took the train back to the interchange where I showed Pa where to wait for the bus and gave him directions about where to alight. He made it home safely and that was his little adventure. It was fun!

I brought Pa to the place which sells unpolished rice congee before, but not Mummy. Since she also eats moderately healthy, I introduced her to it so that she has another place to socialise over a nice meal. I added extra fish to our bowls of piping hot congee and ordered stirfried garlic pea shoots to share. Mummy loved the food so much, she polished off her bowl and her share of the vegetables. We also liked the generous amount of shredded ginger in our congee. MS really wants to try the food here, so next month, if our schedules allow it, I'll take him. This is 1 of the very few ways I enjoy eating wholegrains; it's actually delicious!

MI wanted to explore a newly renovated coffee shop near the office, so CL, SC and I tagged along to take a look. The stalls were brightly lit and it was crowded! After bagging a table, we ordered at the stalls we wanted to try. Haven't had bak chor mee for quite awhile. This time, I had meepok (flat yellow noodles) dry with vinegar and ketchup, no chilli sauce. It was alright, not especially delicious; definitely prefer soup or white (plain, without sauce). SC and I were disappointed to find that there wasn't any pork liver, which is a standard item included in bak chor mee. So whilst the meepok was very smooth and slurpable, the meal was just okay.

Well! It's already Friday. I'm starting to count down to my weekend getaway. So looking forward to it. This weekend though, I'll focus on getting enough rest. It's been hectic the last few days and I'm rather tired. A slightly longer break from work will definitely help. 下次见!

Because everyone was upset that we didn't have a moral guide for the Children of Ecthuctu, Vasso has temporarily been named Speaker of Ecthuctu until a better candidate is found so he can become the leader.
Just as I noticed that Vasso was starting to get a mood debuff from staying in one place for too long, we got a quest to rescue someone named Szox (henceforth referred to as "Socks"), which gave him a good excuse to head out on an adventure.
Socks was only a few hours' walk from our temporary base (it's named "Landfall" for anyone curious), so it looked like a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
Upon arrival, the '1 imp' guard turned out to be a biliog named Blackdragon. He was an interesting and extremely nonthreatening lad, armed with only a hatchet and easily taken down by Vasso's shooting with no injuries on our part.
Blackdragon even bleeds chemfuel, which was fun, and we patched him up to bring him home for conversion or consumption, whichever comes first.
We rescued Szox Socks, a nice Impid lady, without any issue, and the trio are on their way back to Landfall now. I'm not going to do an intro page for Socks yet, because I want to use the "violent conversion" ritual on her and Blackdragon, which has a 50% chance to kill them. Don't get too attached to either of them, we may end up eating them both.
