to clarify, badgering me for updates (verbatim: "Could you please please please post chapter 7") isn't impolite, just irritating. it was the decision to send another ask chiding me for my response that was impolite. kind of a dick move, as most involved in the tumblr writing community know. i genuinely feel sorry for the writers you follow if you genuinely only see their ask boxes as an opportunity to pester them.

i'm disappointed too, anon. i hoped that maybe keeping calm and sincerely explaining myself would be enough to prompt you to respond with empathy in kind, but instead you doubled down.

it seems like there's been a misunderstanding in regards to my patreon; there is no tier that ensures a specific chapter of a fic is updated within a specific time frame. that would be a commission, which is explicitly listed as a reward for my $30 tier, because those take a lot more time + energy for me.

my $12 patreon tier offers early access to my writing, and the ability to request future chapters be moved up on my to-do list, through polls + priority continuation requests. i can't guarantee any specific chapter update in a month, and i'll explain why.

currently, i have over 50 total WIP fics being worked on. each month, i get around 25 chapter update requests. even assuming that each chapter is 2k, my usual minimum chapter length, i would have to write 50,000 words every single month. if i had the capability for that kind of regular output, i would be churning out books like stephen king instead of constantly struggling for my usual monthly 10-15k like a chump lol.

in essence, don't subscribe to my patreon for a specific story unless you know the next chapter for it is already up there. which it is, because i eventually got to your request. and it'll eventually be up on the blog for free. and during the months you spent subscribed to my patreon, you received at minimum tens of thousands of words of content.

finally, an earnest request: please stop acting like twelve dollars is an exorbitant fee when i'm literally making pennies per word written. like, i could have worked a single 8 hour shift at mcdonalds in texas for minimum wage instead and i would have ended up with $8 more than you paid me for four months of many hours of dedicated work.

Apologies if this (or anything similar) has been asked before, but how long did Wayfarer take to plan/write/etc before you started posting about it on tumblr or actually.. writing the game?

I'm currently in the very early planning stages of my own IF and I don't want to rush on making the worldbuilding. I imagine lots of planning went into Wayfarer (?) before you started to actually write the game or promote it on tumblr, and I suppose I'm just curious to know? Again, my apologies if this is a weird question or one you don't want to answer.

Oh that's a good question!

To be honest, I wouldn't use what I did as a good example of what to do. 😅 As some of you know, Wayfarer has its roots as a Dragon Age fan game. That game went nowhere (and has no similarities to Wayfarer other than Alexia, Ren, Calla and Aeran were all originally OCs for it), but it did mean that I had an audience from the DA fandom when I made the switch to original writing. I made this blog and did announcement posts and OC questions before I had anything substantially written. I released one demo in May 2019 and didn't get much further than that.

2020 was when I made changes and abandoned the fan game to work on what is now Wayfarer. I did about 5 months of plotting and planning before I made the announcement; I actually did most of the initial worldbuilding and outlines for a video game scriptwriting course I was taking at the time. I had to develop a game bible for a hypothetical game, so I used Wayfarer for that coursework, although that game bible is not very representative of what the game is now since I had to do specific things in specific ways to appease my professor.

The first thing I did after announcing the switch to orginal fiction was commission a portrait of Mel. 😂 I already had portraits of Aeran, Alexia, Ren and Calla and though those ones were commissioned while the game was still Dragon Age, their character designs are still the same. Though I don't think artwork is necessary to have a successful IF, it can be very helpful in terms of gaining an audience. Visuals are eye-catching!

I tried a lot of different things in 2020. Some things worked, some didn't. The first half of the year I was worldbuilding, outlining, and reworking the game bible. I wrote and coded a Prologue that eventually got scrapped, and the beginning of Episode 1 up to the fight with Kane, which didn't. I livestreamed it on my Twitch channel with my partner reading and doing voices (shout out to anyone who remembers Southern Sero because that was... a thing that happened).

I rewrote the Prologue with the one we have now in September 2020 and worked to add more material to Episode 1 before making an official game announcement in November 2020. I can't quite remember how far that first demo went, but I think it was the Prologue and Episode 1's fight with Kane if the player went to Rat Alley and up to the end of the meeting with Zenaida if the player went to the docks. All of that would have been around 51k words of playable content in the game when the demo released.

Looking back, I probably would have done things differently. I also think that there's no one way to make an IF. What works for one person is not necessarily going to work for another, it's okay to find your own path. 💗

But I can give a little bit of advice:

You need to know what you are writing before you go ahead and write it. IF is not a medium that can be pantsed (unless you're creating a short or micro game). Get comfortable plotting and outlining in well in advance. You should have an idea of how your game is going to shape up and the main thrust of the plot before you start, otherwise you're going to get overwhelmed with too many ideas and risk fizzling out.

To promote a game, you need to have a game. Before you launch an announcement post and officially start marketing your game, you need to have a playable demo with substantial content. Think of it this way: you only have one shot to make a first impression and it has to be a good one. The demo needs to introduce the player to their character, the world, the game's main mechanics, and a plot hook. The amount of work this is going to take is going to differ depending on the scope of your game and your writing style, but a character creator and 1000-3000 words is not going to cut it.

Don't use your blog as a way to worldbuild. Keep that offline and between you and your beta group or writing circle. If there's one repeat tendency I've seen a lot over the past few years of IF development on tumblr, it's that there is sometimes more interest in answering OC asks and writing flash fiction and answering prompts then there is in writing the game. These asks can be a lot of fun and can absolutely drive engagement for your blog, but at the end of the day they can either take away from the time and energy you should put towards your game or they will spoil the development of your characters for the players. The line between player engagement and player participation in a game's development is a very fine one that can get tricky to walk.

Worldbuilding isn't something that you do at the start and never again. It's something that grows with you as your write your project; sometimes you'll have to shift things and change them, fill in holes you didn't see coming, scrap ideas entirely. Allow yourself breathing room. I think you're off to a good start by knowing that you don't want to rush the worldbuilding. It's something that takes a lot of time to grow organically, and it's going to change and grow with you.

My Time at Evershine

I guess they're reworking Project ME into a more PC/Console friendly version. (This does kind of make it feel like everyone who was given access to Project ME were just unpaid beta testers but...I won't dwell on that too much)

I played Project ME on and off (at least until it stopped working on my device) but I just couldn't fully get into it what with it being a mobile game and all (and unavailable to emulate on Nox). So I am looking forward this as the third My Time game.

I do still have...concerns...though. I'll just put them under a cut if you're interested but be warned: Long winded and probably poorly articulated rambling ahead. TL;DR: Not loving the art style and I'm a bit pessimistic about certain game mechanics.

The first thing is the direction of the art style. It's almost too far from the style of Portia and Sandrock. I know a lot of people complained about that with the previous games. If I had a dollar for every time I saw someone complain about the MC looking like a child or harping on the character proportions...I'd be pretty rich by now. That being said, the the cartoony style was part of the charm and uniqueness of the other games. My Time at Portia is distinct, you really can't mistake it for any other game (like how when you see Code Lyoko, you know it's Code Lyoko and not possibly another show). Even the slightly less cartoonish style of Sandrock still retains that charm. Project ME kept up the Sandrock style so I was hoping if they brought it to PC it wouldn't change much but clearly that isn't the case. With the more realistic style it's lost it's uniqueness. Several people have already pointed out that this new direction makes it look too much like other games (I see a lot of comparisons to Palia and Dreamlight Valley in the YouTube comments) and I can't help but see MiHoYo's signature anime-esque style myself. I'm not saying it looks bad. It looks amazing! It just doesn't look like My Time.

Another thing for me is that it's more of a city builder than a building/farming life sim. Those elements are still there obviously but...trying to build up the settlement takes a lot of time and planning (again, I played Project ME so I already have a feel for this feature) and you're left with little time for the core elements of the game. Hell, I struggled to keep up with commissions while working on the settlement and keeping up relationships and collecting materials AND exploring. I constantly felt like I wasn't making any actual progress. It became stressful and if there is one thing these type of games shouldn't be, it's stressful. Hopefully they'll balance it out better here than in ME.

Lastly, and I know this one is something a lot of people will disagree with me on, but I already have a fear of them focusing too much on multiplayer/co-op. I know there is a (very) vocal group of people who constantly demand multiplayer to be shoved into every. single. game. And when developers kowtow to that demand, singleplayer always suffers. Always. I'm not saying that it shouldn't be implemented for those who want it or if the developers themselves want it but...some of us just want to be left alone to enjoy the story. Especially in a game/genre that is, at it's core, supposed to be a singleplayer experience. Sometimes though, developers focus so much on pleasing multiplayer gamers that they completely neglect the singleplayer campaign. Hell, that almost seemed happen with Sandrock (thankfully, it didn't but it got precarious for a hot minute during early access). This is somewhat two-pronged, too. Usually, you can ignore multiplayer stuff in a game if it also has singleplayer but it's become more common to force the multiplayer/co-op feature onto players recently. Such as locking features of the game or putting up a roadblock in story progression unless you play with other people. I dropped Magic Awakened after only playing for a few weeks because of this. When you can't enjoy a singleplayer storymode without having to do co-op tasks or something it ceases to be singleplayer (and fun...for people like me). I know Pathea wanted to expand on the multiplayer feature for their next game, I just hope they don't expand so much that it destroys the main, singleplayer experience.

To reiterate, these are personal concerns. I know this comes across as whiny and I'm not trying to be but I guess I've just become pessimistic. That being said, I am genuinely looking forward to this game. I've supported Pathea for a long time and I don't plan on dropping that support unless they do something horribly unforgivable (which I honestly don't foresee).

It's been three weeks since you've last seen your fiancé, Melone, and despite having phone calls and texting him as much as possible, you still deeply missed him. Tonight was going to be the night that he returned, but a few hours ago he called to inform you that he wouldn't be home tonight, promising that he would get home as soon as his job was complete. This happened often, so you were used to it, but it didn't make you sulk for him any less.

Being understanding of his job was a big part of your relationship with him. You learned years ago that he couldn't speed up or slow down the pace of the missions that he was assigned. He was very honest with you once you accepted his engagement six months ago, and you were well aware that he was a member of a hitman squad. You knew he got paid to execute people discreetly, and you also knew that unless he shared something with you, don't ask. Never did your fiancé show you anger. He was sweet and answered all of your questions. You just rather not hear about all his near death experiences. They make you nervous, and your lover always went into explicit detail anytime you asked him a question.

You've been keeping your mind busy picking up extra shifts at your job and filling your free time with mind-numbing tasks that would simply just make the days pass by quicker. Now that it is late at night you sit at your perfectly polished dining room table alone, your eyes staring straight ahead at a picture of you and Melone that rested over your fireplace mantel in the living room. Deeply your heart ached for him, ached for his mere presence.

Sighing, your eyes drifted to the ring on your engagement finger, a tasteful gold band that will soon be replaced with a wedding ring. You wanted one of the same styles, something simple to match your lover. Having matching rings was something that the both of you wanted, it being an expression of the undying love that the two of you had for each other. Equals - despite him being more powerful than you in many ways, he still treated you as an equal. He was a great man to you. You really did adore him.

When you heard the jiggle of your front doorknob, you reached for the gun taped under your dining room table, eyes slightly wide. Melone had always told you that he had enemies, that despite his house being hidden that someone may find him. He even told you that someone may find you and hurt you, so he placed a few hidden guns around the house, and he has a hidden room in one of his bookcases. You hoped that would never happen, but you were cautious, just as he instructed you to be.

As the door pushed open, your heart skipped a mighty beat, your hand gripping the handle of the gun, ready to free it from its duct taped prison and defend yourself as necessary. Just as your lovely fiancé instructed you. Immediate relief set it when you saw it wasn't an intruder stepping in but your lovely fiancé Melone, who you were just thinking about.

You let go of the gun, rising out of your seat, your heart slowing down to a small beat as your eyes fully set on him. Soft turquoise eyes stared back at you, heavy bags under his eyes, despite how happy he looked to see you. "Babe?" You called out, walking over to meet him. "I'm so happy to see you. Is everything okay?" You hoped everything went well at his job. You always wanted him to succeed, knowing how important his job was to him.

"Hello, my love," Melone cooed softly, tossing his leather carry on onto the ground carelessly, his arms extended as he quickly walked over to you. Within seconds, his slender arms were around you, his lips pressing into yours, his breath tasting of coffee and mints. "We finished early, and I decided to travel home to you. Where else would I wanna be?" He mutteted softly into your lips, light pink dusting across his cheeks.

Instead of waiting until the next morning like his other teammates, he would always rush back home to see you as soon as he was positive that he was finished up at work. That, along with a pile of other things, made you appreciate being lucky enough to be getting married to him one day. He was such a loving and kind fiancé. Man.. you really were so lucky.

"If you would have told me, then I would have had you something to eat," you told him, placing a quick kiss on his lips. "I do have leftovers in the fridge, or I could make something fresh for you. Whatever you want, I really missed you, Mel."

A sad smile appeared on his lips as he pulled away slightly, still keeping his arms securely around your waist. "I hate having to go away and leave you all alone in this house for so long. My heart ached deeply for you the entire time I was away, and the smell on your boxers faded when I accidentally washed them. I was so upset."

Playfully, your hands raced to his sides, squeezing gently as you smirked. "Aw, my poor baby. Next time, just pack a few more of my dirty underwear." His eyes brightened even more, you laughing at the sudden perk in his mood. "I'm very glad that you are back. You were gone for so long this time."

When you slept in your bed when he was away, you slept in one of his shirts and on his pillow, taking in his smell as you struggled to fall asleep without him right by your side. You've been with him for years, sleeping with him in your arms, or you in his was always such a comfort when you fell asleep at night. You felt loved and safe in his arms, and when he was gone, you craved that feeling. Not only was he your lover, he was your best friend too. And you always felt a little lost when he was away on business.

"You always have the best ideas," he mused softly, licking his lips as that warm smile returned to his face, making your heart skip a beat. "No need to cook. It's late, but a few diners are still open, we can go grab a bite to eat if you like."

"That sounds great," you replied, nodding your head as you let your arms slowly wrap back around his slender waist. "You aren't too tired? I don't want you to push yourself." You're just happy that he's home. As long as you are with him, it doesn't matter what the two of you do - you just wanted to do it together. Rather, it's going out to eat or staying at home to watch a movie. Every moment spent with him was special to you.

He shook his head, leaning forward, his soft lips pressing into yours gently. As he pulled away, you found yourself leaning into him, your lips pressing back into his, placing soft kisses on his lips. "Promise I'm not too tired," he whispered into your lips as you finally broke away to catch your breath. "I just want to spend time with you, and I love going out with you."

"Okay," you replied, your arms unwrapping around from his waist. "We can go then, it is a really nice night. Why not enjoy it together?"

He let go of you, his hand reaching out to grasp yours, fingers interlocking, like two matching puzzle pieces. The two of you just fit so well together. "Did you miss me?" He always asked this, always needing that assurance because he's been hurt in the past.

"I missed you so much," you confessed, gently squeezing his hand as he led you to the front door. "And I also love you very much, Melone. I'm really glad that you're back home again and safe."

He gave a small nod, pink once again dusting across his cheeks. "I missed you a lot, and I love you more than anything." As he opened the door, he let go of your hand, his arm wrapping around your shoulder as the two of you stepped outside. "Stay by my side."

You smirked, the iron grip that he had on you giving you no way to leave his side. Not that you would ever want to leave his side. "Always," you promised him as the two of you walked side by side, clinging to each other.

Thank you all so much for your support for my work. With the last post blowing up so hard with only 9 (now 10) posts ever since starting really gives me some self confidence starting again on tumblr.

So just a small update on me in general

ADHD is really kicking my ass right now, and i'm either hyperfocusing on tumblr for 3 hours, or getting distracted by youtube for 4 hours. There's no real inbetween.

That being said, my carrd has been updated (thanks to a certain someone *stares*) which has prompted me to look at some things. I need to update my pinned post and some stuff. Not sure when I'll get to it, but it is on the plan!

Everyone has pretty pinned posts and mine's just kinda junky. Though there's good reason, I've found that a lot of people wouldn't read my rules unless i put them there...but now it's just kinda blocky and i don't like it. And long. So i'll probably streamline it.

I also need to finish editing Koun's icons to the new format. I'm missing a lot of my icons and keep having to use the same ones. I need VARIETY which i technically have, just have to edit them LOL.

I Am going through some bad shit right now irl, some stuff only a few people actually know and I'm not really up to talking about it just yet. I've got a therapy session next week so maybe i'll be a little more open afterwards. Either that or i'll completely shut down. One of the two. But it's not good, and I may end up having to ask for some monetary help due to not being able to cover a lot of what's going on.

If you want to go ahead and see about helping me out, feel free to DM me, i'll take whatever help i can get....however, due to my ADHD and life events any service i provide will have to wait for a bit. (I already have two commissions i'm trying to force myself to work on and can't get myself to even open SAI due to the overwhelming idea of it all.)

These events ARE effecting my ability to be on Tumblr right now. Mostly the irl stress is setting off my ADHD and executive dysfunction and depression. It's causing me to hyperfocus on specific threads or randomly not reply to things, and I just wanted to say that I'm not angry at anyone, i'm not dropping anyone, i'm not ghosting anyone. I'm just really stressed and not able to focus on but one or two things at a time. I'll get over this, and finish the stuff i need to do eventually, but bear with me guys.

I know this is really spacy and not well put together, but i just wanted to give you all an update on what's going on with me since i'm not replying to everything i need to reply too and can seem to be dropping or ghosting people when I'm not. I can't begin to express how much i love you all for putting up with my spotty nature, and i look forward to getting better and being able to actively work on things again!

I went to the Drs today and yesterday :3!!! I got approved for a wheelchair finally! No prescription for it because we're working on getting an official diagnosis but I got the go-ahead from my doc which makes me feel safer in my choice to go through with it, like I truly know what my body needs best, and like I'm being Actually Listened To. They're upping my dose and I'm seeing a psych and a therapist and one or two other doctors who are going to help me get down to what my conditions are, how to manage or fix them if at all possible, and to help me with the pain I've been in

It's fucking frustrating and surreal suddenly being able to go to the doctor (and ADVOCATE FOR MYSELF!!!!!!) after so many years of gaslighting and neglect from everyone around me.

It sucks so bad that it's gotten to the point where I am suffering near constantly, but only have a few moments of clarity from dissociation and severe brain fog to even have an accurate feel for what's going on so I can log my symptoms

And on top of that even feeling like anything I'm going through is even noteworthy is a massive task unless I am literally.... Unable to do anything because I am in full body pain. It's so absurd I'm sat here wondering if my pain is Real or Valid while 2 of 3 of the main segment of my body are so impacted it hurts to move even with my cane, which used to help! And it feels like it's only when all three hurt that I can recognize exactly how disabling my condition is. Like OOP FUCK, OKAY YEAH, NO, THE PAIN IS DEFINITELY REAL NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!! OW!

I essentially left my class an hour early because I just couldn't do it anymore. I was hurting all over, arms, legs, hips, back. Anything with joints in it that moved or held weight was just FUCKED. But I finally have a multi person team that isn't just a PCP who are all working together to help me and!!!!!!! I GET MY FUUUUCKING CHAIR THAT I FOUGHT SO HARD FOR!! FOR VALIDATION AND RESPECT AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT!!!!!!!

Now :( all I gotta do is find a way to Afford it. I'm backed on commissions already and I don't want to take more until I finish them. But yanno. Working is hard when you.... Can't. Really do that. It's stressful but I'm enjoying a moment of peace for today that I am extremely grateful to receive :') bc boy howdy did I need it desperately.

I get so much done

   It’s a random, rainy Tuesday in January, time to get some work done!

   I sometimes get ‘volunteered’ by my family to help people with art-adjacent tasks. This happened over a month ago when my daughter told her boyfriend’s Grandma that I would help her update/repaint her mailbox. She lugged the offending mailbox home and I sighed a bit internally. One, I technically know how to do lettering, but I haven’t practiced in decades and my brushes are all for art, not calligraphy/lettering. Boy, is there a difference. Also Grannie wanted Elvis’s guitar painted over her ex-husband’s name on one side of the box.        which I get, but I         ok agreed to do it. Why not. Then the holidays happened and I put off the mailbox project.

   Until today, when I pulled up my big girl attitude and painted the damned guitar and lettering. It is not what you might call my finest work, but it is sufficient to grace a rural mailbox at the ass-end of Flintstone.

   I then moved ahead with the landscape commission, painstakingly tracing a line of buildings into the center of the scene. I painted the snow and trees around them, and that small area the size of a business envelope took about as long as the entire session before where I covered 3/4 of the canvas. It was picky and finicky, but helped me recover from the lettering.

   Along the way Hero got hay, cats and dogs got their morning food, and Meadow got some worm medicine that she truly hated. The worst part is that the pills are dosed so one pill will medicate the average-size cat, but Meadow is a Big Girl and needed an extra half pill. With cheese. Because I am not utterly heartless.

   Baxter, at some point, found a skein of yarn my daughter had gotten out for crochet purposes. She found the yarn strung across the house and used forceful language as she untangled it. I was keeping my face very neutral, because snickers wouldn’t have been appreciated.

   “Can we bake a cheesecake flan?” Well, my next task is trying to call the folks at the 529 savings plan to see why they haven’t sent me a check - so FLAN IT IS.

   I began the slow process of caramelizing the sugar while she started in mixing cream cheese, evaporated milk, and etc. I ran into the living room to put Mos Eisley Cantina music on (I needed it) and heard her erupt. AaaAAaH!

 “Get it out! Quick!” my son yelled.

AAAAAAAH! *****!

   I returned sedately to the kitchen to find that a stink bug had flung himself into the cream cheese and milk mixture. In his panic, he Released the Stink. Son was laughing helplessly, daughter was iRAtE (and also laughing). The Mos Eisley Cantina band was tootling fervently in the next room.

   There was nothing for it but to throw the mess away. Thank heavens she only got the first two ingredients in. She went out back to fling it dramatically, which worked until the hens came running. They ended up. cheesed. We have cheesed hens.

   Meanwhile the sugar did caramelize. I poured it into the baking dish without incident. A second try with the cheese and milk yielded a lovely batter that we poured into the dish on top of the caramel. I gently placed it into a baking dish of water, and into the oven it went. Fingers crossed!

   Now I have to locate paperwork and call the College Trust. Unless . . . Meadow needs some pets? For her nerves?

So, last quarter I took a commercial illustration course at uni. It was super enjoyable, the teacher was incredibly nice and supportive, I made my current profile pic there and also this thingy.

This is a vector (!) illustration for 70x70 cm silk scarves with uni branding. We were told to make it all about student life, so I made it as chaotic and creative as I could since that's exactly what uni is like from my perspective: lots of pretty people, tons of studying, chaos everywhere and sometimes it's all feels like a fever dream. We were given the official uni colour palette, but I still went as crazy as I could with them.

I was obviously very inspired by Araki and made it my goal to put that inspiration to good use even if it looked like it can't possibly fit.

Personally, I am very proud of this one, even though the examiners didn't think it was anything special. Vector is a nightmare and Adobe products are made by the Devil!!! Still got 9/10 though! And here's how it looks on the official mock-up. We also had the same elements used for a 50 cm plate and a 50x70 cm poster, but they aren't as interesting, so I'm not showing them.

I'd say go ahead and order a commission from me, but you can't do it anymore unless you're from Russia or a country that didn't sanction Russia. So just... idk, tune in to see what else I can do?

Tell me you haven’t worked in publishing without telling me…….

1. Cover artists aren’t all specifically commissioned for books. Unless there’s a specific art direction they will use assets from bigger companies cause art directors have to work with an excess of 30+ books PER SEASON. It’s highly likely (and confirmed by Tor) that they bought this asset from a vendor that they weren’t aware was using AI art. Does that excuse usage? No. But it’s also pretty normal that they can’t vet what amounts to literally thousands of assets. They have to trust vendors and sometimes it doesn’t pay off.

2. When an author “approves” a cover, they literally get the jpg and made comments on if they like it or not. That’s basically it. Then it gets sent to marketing and sales, who look at their clients like BN and Amazon and see what’s selling. Even if the author likes it, the sales dept might ask for changes and it’s a protracted fight that usually the sales dept wins—even with big authors. It’s not authors commissioning their own covers 🙄 usually they get several versions and they say yes to the one they like best. Paolini prob had no idea that the cover was not produced in-house.

3. Depending on how big a print run is, the components have to be made in advance. The bigger the print run the more time you need to print more—months ahead especially with the supply shortage in publishing at the moment. They also print ARCs ahead with the cover if it is done by that time to hand out to publications and other authors for quotes and reviews. It’s part of the marketing strategy for cover recognition (but neither here nor there for this point). It just means this cover is OUT. In the world. Likely the jackets have finished printing and they had to make the call to spend more to commission and reprint covers and create more waste—or to go with the first print run of this cover until it sells out and they have to do a second run. Print runs for big authors can run into the tens of thousands of books. As the OP pointed out—this is an author with 24 million books sold. The print run is Not Small.

4. All this leads to—often, publishing imprints don’t have individual budgets for their authors. Their pool comes out of a bigger budget for their authors, and allocated per book of the season depending on their P&L projections. This means they’ve already spent the money on Paolini’s books, and exceeding that by prob more than double given that rush jobs ALWAYS cost more leads to depriving their other smaller authors of their marketing share. Authors who would hurt a lot more than Paolini will if he doesn’t get a new cover.

Thus doesn’t mean that the use of AI art should be accepted as a cost saving measure—just that this fuck up got so far in the process it actively hurts more people than it helps to pull out in the middle of it. If Tor does it again, then yeah they don’t give a fuck about their artists. But them not doing it now is a careful calculation about how much they can give to other authors they also have responsibilities too. Paolini is also not someone who is exactly at fault here, just a lesson that he should ask more questions abt his cover in the future. Given that Eragon was self-published at first before it was picked up and commissioned with a specific artist, he prob doesn’t know all the details of in-house cover making.
