i also want to mention that there are many releases that are Not represented in the diagram! they all came out after March 18 2021, though, which is when the official diagram above was posted online, so maybe if we got an updated version today it would look different.

produced by [myself] continues the naming conventions of the produced by [] eps so might belong somewhere on that circle. unknown ballad 2.3 similarly continues the naming conventions from unknown art pop 2.1 and yours only 2.2. dunno how those three connect to each other aside from name tbh p sure the japanese releases (suit dance and japan best album) wouldnt be on there bc they’re just re-releases of other songs (albeit with one original song, seamless mind). i think the zurui onna/ hidoi otoko single could be on there somewhere though, bc there’s a full music video and even though one of the songs is a cover they put the money cover on there too (in yours only 2.2) there’s also that one winter song and ost, those felt like one-offs anyway, i don’t feel the need to fit them in anywhere here.

and of course there is zero mention of the underground idol project here. but i have a feeling that love leaving had an impact on the direction the group was going with their narrative, so i’m not even confident that the be series would belong here anyhow. maybe they only came up with the idea after he left. maybe it’s a completely separate set of universes, just borrowing the structure of the previous lore in that it all connects at different points and there are duologies to think about (3 pairs of singles).

also very fun to see their duologues continued with the underground idol project! duologies are a really important aspect of their discography so far. even the lore diagram has 1 ep on either side of that line, making 3 duologies so far. but then there’s dot point jump -> line sun goodness which i might consider their own duology. idk what to do with if surface m because it never came out though. maybe it is/was intended to be the conclusion of the universe because it’s at the end of the diagram and they’re all in order?

also there’s the song duologies! like picasso/dora maar, savanna/desert. not all of them reflect across the line though, like, while angel and off angel are from different produced by [ ] albums, blossom and bloom are not. plus yours only 2.2 only has the money cover on it so i think the album duology thing has more of an aesthetic value than anything else (until we get to instinct at least). but the way it connects certain songs to other songs is really thematically interesting anyway. (i made a playlist of ooo song duologies a bit ago)

underground idol #1, yoojung's 'begin' and wong kar-wai's chungking express

since the video teasers started dropping this week, some lyons have been noticing that the 'begin' mv seems like it takes some inspiration from wong kar-wai's films, especially chungking express

for those who don't know, wong kar-wai is a v influential director of hong kong cinema known for his distinct visual style involving saturated color grading and easian cityscapes and a non-linear storytelling style that is heavily character and emotion-focused, often telling stories of love, loss, romance, yearning, and sensuality

ooo are no stranger to wkw references and inspiration in their work, the most obvious being the posters for in the mood for love, happy together, and 2046 in the background of the unknown art pop 2.1 shoot

(happy together, abt a tumultuous, tragic relationship, which ooo is also no stranger to in their work, is perhaps one of the most pivotal films of east asian lgbt cinema)

from the teasers, 'begin' definitely has a lot of that saturated coloring focused on enhancing the colors of the city lights you see in wkw films

and from what we've seen, it looks like there are definitely a lot of references to wkw's chungking express, which tells two stories. begin seems to be mostly referencing the second story in the film, centered around a hong kong cop and the server at a cafe he frequents, since we have yoojung working in a diner and kb as someone who visits

the server at the cafe, faye, also wears this spring yellow a lot, which would explain why taeyeob got the yellow branding for his solo, as opposed to wookjin, if all the solos are getting different colors (which is smth ive been wondering since u know, yellow is like wook's signature color)

and on the day the first video teaser was released, jaden jeong, their creative director who is in charge of their lore, among other things, posted this picture of aquarium fish with 'begin' lyrics as the caption (the same lyrics that are in the description of the teasers), and fish are a motif that appear frequently in chungking express (also as a side note, jaden's ig was private for a long time until this post)

so that's a quick rundown on the wkw references so far in begin!!
