Have to have a bit of colour now and then on my feed. I love the meaning (to me) of this quote. Hard work today makes your future.  Ideal gift for those thinking about college and university or starting a new direction in their life. My daughter will be starting 6th Form in September and I am so proud of her having a goal to aim for (publishing) and all the hard work she is putting into her GCSEs which start in May. University Goal: Appreciation of the Diversity of Human Experience
Appreciation of the Diversity of Human Experience
Students will expand their appreciation and information of the extensive human experience through the examination of differences in ethnic and cultural perspectives, class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability.
Compared to Fall Term i feel like we spent a lot more time on this subject. Already as a class i think we do a really good job of accepting different ideas and views of things and it really shows in our class discussions. Many times when discussing a topic such as how we view a piece of art our backgrounds make a difference in what we take from it. Depending on where we grew up, our sexual orientation, race, social class, etc. plays a role in what we digest from the lessons. However, there should be an equal level of understanding between the students to start a level of acceptance. We did this by learning about white privilege and ableism. Both of these concepts are things that do not usually get brought up in a classroom setting but these ideas are important so everyone can at least understand each other in a more personal light.
The assignments we had this term that best fit this goal was the Dr. Derrais Carter presentation and the screen print workshop for the Constructing Identity exhibition at the Portland Art Museum.  In both lessons we were taught that the world is much more diverse than we view it as. The presentation taught by Dr. Carter showed everyone that while we have come a far way from slavery, the way that African Americans are still being treated in our society today is extremely unjust. Black people are still being viewed as wild animals and these ideas were being presented through the similarities of propaganda posters from the civil war era and today’s advertisements. In several examples black people are being presented as animals. For the screen print workshop we had the opportunity to view the constructing identity exhibition where the students could view art done by people of color. For me this was a big step for the UNST goal because we were not limited to European Art that only consists of white men in power and naked white women. We were able to celebrate and understand art from people who have a completely different view of the world and it was extremely powerful.

University Goal: Ethics and Social Responsibility
Ethics and Social Responsibility
Students will develop their knowledge of the impact and worth of people and their decisions on society, both intellectually and socially, through group projects and working with communities.
This project consisted of each student completing at least five service hours doing anything between volunteering at organizations to raising money to donating to various charities. By doing these service hours it connected the students to the community and gave everyone hands on experience in situations that we might not have encountered. It also allowed the class to reflect on their own upbringings and compare it to less fortunate situations that lead to the class be more grateful towards what they have. Once the students finished their service hours they were asked to write an essay reflecting on the experiences as well as answer thought provoking questions to reflect on a deeper level. Both timesthat i have volunteered so far have been extremely life changing and it continues to be enjoyable and i look forward to to do more in the future.
Service Reflection:
For my service hours, I chose to volunteer at the housing community, Kateri Park in Portland. These apartments are mostly refugees from Somalia, Burma, Afghanistan and Nepal. Every Wednesday they hold an art class for some of the kids. The projects consist of drawing, cut-outs, and collages and they are either done individually or in groups. They need volunteers to help watch the kids and to help them with their art. This opportunity was amazing and it left me with a new view and understanding of the world.
Since Freshman year in high school I have had a strong gravitation towards teaching and art. I have always found it enjoyable being around kids and I get along with them easily as well which led to my desire to teach. I specifically wanted to teach art as well because that is the main passion in my life so when I stumbled upon this opportunity I took it right away. This was the first time I have been in a situation that I could teach art and I was scared I was going to be let down by the experience but it was the complete opposite. The kids were all so wonderful and cheerful that I had a smile on my face the whole time. The room was set up very much like a classroom with tables across the room and several chairs for everyone to sit in. we started it off by giving the art assignment to the kids and then I walked around and asked if anyone needed my help. It did not surprise me that everyone was a bit shy and I was as well. However, once we broke past the awkward phase it went well from there. All of the kids were so cute and they all had really great personalities. It was easy to tell that they were so happy to be there and I feel like that’s rare for kids. When I have worked with kids before it is usually difficult to get the kids involved in what we are doing. A lot of the times they like to run away and talk with their friends and it is a huge hassle to get them to cooperate but the majority of the kids at Kateri Park wanted to be there and it was easy to tell. This opportunity was really useful for me because it allowed me to at least have a small idea of what it would be like to teach art. Although I was not the one to directly teach them I still got to be a part of the process which was beneficial. I enjoyed everything so much that I think I am going to look for more opportunities like this as well as look more into pursuing teaching art as a career.
It was interesting because I noticed that the stuff they were drawing was the same stuff I drew when I was their age. It seems ignorant now that I am looking back on it but for some reason I imagined them to be different than the kids that I grew up with. Their lives were and still are so much more challenging than I could imagine but they were still so happy and excited about everything. This reminded me of when we went over “The Danger of a Single Story,” in class. When we were talking about it in class I understood what the message was and I could even remember specific times where I was at fault of only thinking of a single story. However, sitting in the classroom with all those kids, it hit me like a ton of bricks that I had only imagined one single story for all of them. I only viewed them from their backgrounds and gave them my pity when they did not need that. They were all people who have their own pain as well as joys and it was extremely wrong of me to categorize them all together because they deserved to be looked at individually and not as a group. I judged them based off their struggles instead of their achievements and I am so angry with myself for that. This volunteer opportunity was a huge moment of clarity for me.

University Goal: Communication
Communication
Students will develop their ability to communicate in various ways such as writing, graphics, numeracy, group projects, and to be capable with various ways of communication through technology. Writing is covered through essays, written responses, as well as summaries. Graphics expresses the ability of the student to communicate information or concepts through the use of pictures. Numeracy is the ability to understand and work with numbers. The students will be paired together in groups for certain projects in order to achieve communication throughout the grouping. Lastly, is the students ability to use different technologies such as websites and word to communicate.
Between last term and this term i feel like communication was one of the main focuses. Every assignment we have done has related to some form of communication. Whether it was doing the debates from Fall or doing the service hour project there is always a communication portion added in either a presentation or essay. However, this term i think we had more practice because of the Peer-to-Peer project. This assignment gave the students an opportunity to create a lesson plan that will communicate a bigger idea that was taught to the students of Molalla High School. What was also interesting about this particular assignment was that the students of Molalla got to teach all of us something as well which was how to screen print. This project was very enjoyable and extremely different than all of the other assignments we have done both terms. Another assignment we had that explored communication well was the “Ways of Seeing” assignment. We had to read, “Ways of Seeing” by John Berger and write an essay about how European Art is still tied to current media advertisements. This was my favorite assignment because it really helped me develop a new way of understanding art. Writing the essay was challenging because we had just been taught all of these new ideas and we were then expected to write a full essay communicating Berger’s ideas as well as our own.
Peer-to-Peer example:
A Peasant Family, Jean Michelin, 1650/1660, Oil on Canvas
Accession Number: 82.82
Gallery name/ Location: Belluschi Building, Ayer Wing, 2nd Floor, Laura and Roger Meier Family Gallery
Theme/Big Idea:
Jean Michel Michelin's painting "A Peasant Family" depicts.a poor family in the streets on France. This painting interested me because many artists did not depict scenes like this from back then. Often, most paintings were portraits of wealthy families/persons or nature/towns. I rarely ever see paintings portray real life situations that are not always the easiest to digest. This had me thinking in today’s society what situations, subjects, or topics rarely get discussed or focused on that are important
Three Open Ended Questions
1.     Why do you think Jean Michelin wanted to portray a poor family in a painting?
2.     Compare the parallels in this painting to today?
3.     Why is it important to depict real life situations?
 Three Bullet Points of Information
·       Michelin’s work depicts the urban working class and as shown above he painted them in a regal manor and did not portray them as pitiful
·       He wanted to depict the Calvinist/protestant Work Ethic which is A view of life that promotes hard work and self-discipline as a means tomaterial prosperity. It is called Protestant because some Protestant groups believe that such prosperity is a sign of God's grace.
·       Much like back then, a lot of our media/information we receive is controlled to make us thing certain ways of living is the only right way to live. Examples of this are The Kardashians and Celebrity news.
 Interpretive Activity
1. The visitors will create a news story headline depicting what they think is important to discuss that is not widely talked about
2. . Visitors will decide in their own opinion of what they think is important to discuss or bring attention to. To introduce this topic I will discuss how most of our media and news does not actually talk about news but more often than not focuses on what celebrities are doing or what fashion/music is trending instead of real life problems.
3. By the end of the lesson the visitors will get more knowledge/Awareness to real world issues

Ways of Seeing example:
Ways of Seeing
The Village Party by Pieter Angillis is an oil painting on canvas, created in 1727. The painting is of a group of people dancing, courting, and socializing in front of a pub in the English Country side. Besides the pub, the picture is quite bright and cheerful. The people shown have a light value to them, instantly putting emphasis on them to make them the fore-front of the scene. The sky matches the light value of the villagers while the trees and grass match the dark values of the pub. There is repetition of the people and the colors of the clothes they are wearing that are varying shades of blue, red, and yellow making the composition have balance and therefore pleasing to the eye. The people that are dancing have visible movement to them allowing the eye of the viewer to pass over the painting more fluidly as well.
The painting shows obvious enjoyment and leisure. No one in the painting has an upset face or is seen with negative body language. Many things that people enjoy doing are included in the picture such as listening to music, dancing, having sex, drinking, and socializing. Drinking is undeniably tied to all of these activities because the scene takes place in front of a pub. In “Ways of Seeing,” John Berger explains that in paintings and publicity a common theme can be seen that there is, “The equation of drinking and success. (pg. 138)” This leads to the unconscious equation that if we drink then we can partake in these acts that most people love. In the description, next to the painting it even states that these types of paintings were not meant for rich families but for city dwellers who longed for the leisurely and simple lives of country folk.  Only the people that were wealthy could afford to spend an afternoon drinking cheerfully without worry. There is an unconscious connection that drinking goes hand in hand with wealth. “Money is life… in the sense that money is the token of, and the key to, every human capacity. The power to spend money is the power to live. (Berger pg. 138).”  This quote by Berger explains this connection of drinking and success. In paintings, portraits of rich people almost always have alcohol depicted in them. Although, most people drink, it is seen as a status of wealth because it is only the rich people who could spend the money on alcohol and not have to sacrifice anything else for it. They could afford the alcohol as well as food and clothing. Back then for the poor folk it was hard to come by just one of those commodities.
The Dos Equis ad was created in 2013 and was part of a larger campaign called “The Most Interesting Man on Earth.” In this specific ad, the man that is the face of the campaign is shown in front of a black background. Next to him is the bottle of beer being advertised. The bottle is bright green and the background is slightly brighter around it creating a glow for the bottle to draw attention to it. Above the man and bottle there is text reading, “He once rode a bull until it fell asleep,” and right below that is his signature slogan he says in every ad which is, “stay thirsty, my friends.”
This ad is extremely iconic and most people can tell the ad just by seeing the man’s face. The campaign had several commercials that were a hit because of the comedic quality of them. The man is known as “The Most Interesting Man in the World” and to support evidence for this claim, the advertisements tell humorous stories and events the man has said to have done. These stories are so random and odd that they make you remember them. An example of this is in the ad I used which was, “He once rode a bull until it fell asleep.” This claim is obviously false but the thought of this being true is extremely funny and eye-catching. In many of the commercials he is seen surrounded by beautiful women as well. These ads endorse the beer Dos Equis. The main concept of this advertisement is that if you drink this beer, you will be as interesting and successful as him. Once again as mentioned above this ties to “the equation of drinking and success. (pg. 138)” The man in the commercials is o bviously rich because all he does is drink and do outrageous things. He is always seen wearing very expensive and posh clothing such as a variety of suits, watches, and the mass amount of gear he wears in his “adventures.” The drinking is directly tied to his achievements because those are the only two things ever shown about him. He drinks and he is successful, so successful that he is called the most interesting man in the world. The majority of individuals would yearn for that title because popularity is something heavily sought after. In order to be on the same level of this man you would have to drink Dos Equis because in the commercials he clearly states that is the only types of alcohol he drinks. We can then assume that Dos Equis is the only drink that is good enough for him. “Publicity principally addressed to the working class tends to promise a personal transformation through the function of the particular product it is selling (pg. 145).” Berger’s quote explains the main goal of this campaign. If you drink the same beer as The Most Interesting Man in the World, you will have a personal transformation to be more like him. You will be more successful, you will be surrounded by gorgeous women, and your popularity will skyrocket.

University Goal: Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking
Students will learn through several types of curriculum such as problem-posing, investigating, conceptualizing, and self-motivation. Problem-posing is the exchange of knowledge between the student and teacher rather than the teacher passing the knowledge to the student alone. Investigating is the act of finding deeper meanings through articles, essays, and bigger concepts. Conceptualizing is to form concepts, much like investigating, in articles and essays. Lastly, self-motivation is the ability of the students to achieve goals or work based off of their own enthusiasm without the pressure from others.
As i said with communication, critical thinking is something i believe is in every assignment we have had. However, i think Fall Term’s assignments were better examples of critical thinking because of the philosophy we had to read and  understand. Although, what i really enjoyed from this term was that we moved critical thinking to be more based around art than text which is what i think makes Work of Art so much different that other FRINQ’s. The only way to understand art is to use critical thinking. We can not just spit out facts about the artist or the content. We had to find deeper meanings and understand what the artist was trying to convey to the viewer through still images. However, other classes mostly rely on books and articles, and while this does have some form of critical thinking, most of the time it is usually just reciting the facts they read. art is so much different because there is usually never an answer to a piece of art. We have to create our own answers because art is meant for the viewers imagination. The assignments that fit best with this goal is the Ways of Seeing project and the Peer-to-Peer activity. Both of these had a high level of critical thinking because we had to take a piece of art and completely analyze it. In the Ways of Seeing project we analyzed an art piece of our choosing from the European Gallery at the Portland Art Museum. After we chose a piece we then had to analyze it and relate it back to the ideas that John Berger explains in his book as well as comparing it to a current advertisement. The Peer-to-Peer activity was alike for the fact that we had to go to the museum and pick a work of art once again but this time we had to create a lesson plan relating to the art we chose. This was especially difficult because i either found a painting I loved but could not think of lesson for it or i thought of a lesson but i could not find a work of art to go with it. this forced me to really think critically in order to come to a conclusion.
