#Repost @nightscapades ・・・ 26 Nov 2018. The heavens at halfway 📆 Not quite halfway, but it was only a week after the midpoint of 2018 when I was out in the cold of an Aussie winter night, capturing the photos that I used to create this vertical panoramic image. Located near the rural city of Lismore in New South Wales, Australia, this old and former church building is blessed with dark skies on a moonless night. The lack of light pollution, as well as the dry and clear air on that evening, provided excellent conditions for revealing the wispy dust lanes and dark nebulae that characterise the core region of our Milky Way galaxy. 🌌🌟💫 As with so many of my photos from this year, Mars is a dominant player in the scene, looking big, bright and orange over at the top-left of the frame. The Large Magellanic Cloud is peeking out from the bottom edge of the church’s roof on the left, with its sibling the Small Magellanic Cloud making a more conspicuous appearance over the tree near the lower corner of the frame. The short tail of a meteor forms a triangle with Mars and the Small Cloud. For all of the interest that these celestial objects give to the scene, it’s our majestic, magic and magnificent Milky Way that my eyes go straight to, every time I look at this photo. 📷 As I mentioned above, this is a vertical panorama which I composited from ten single, overlapping images. For each of those individual frames I used a Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera, a Rokinon 24mm lens @ f/2.4, and a 15-second exposure @ ISO 6400. I had the camera mounted on a Nodal Ninja III panoramic head, tipped at 90 degrees to allow for the vertical orientation. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 @photographerfocus #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #canon #darkskyshots #earth_tag #ig_astrophotography #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #space #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #milkyway #galaxy #WOTN_MilkyWay #MilkyWayChasers #MilkyWayGrams #lismore #church https://www.instagram.com/p/BqynLIEB7gc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7sc4wcpcqhen

09 Apr, 2018. A shining sea of stars 🚢 🌊 Way out to sea and just over the horizon a cargo ship moves down the coast, its lights seeming to answer the fluorescent spill from a street light near the photographer’s position. The endless thud of waves crashing over the rocks beats a slow rhythm to mark time for the stars of the Milky Way as they make their nightly crawl across the roof of the sky. 🌌 In my late childhood and early teen years, I spent lots of hours clambering over these rocks with my siblings, looking for shells, driftwood & unusual pebbles during holiday times. The location is Tuross Head, on the southeast coast of my state of New South Wales, Australia. My children, now in their twenties, have also enjoyed many holidays at this place of peace and relaxation. None of them nor my wife have ever joined me on an outing to see and photograph the wonders of the night sky, either here or anywhere else. They’re missing out on so much! 📷 This image is a single-frame photograph, captured with a Canon EOS 6D MkII camera, a Rokinon 24mm lens @ f/2.4, with a 13-second exposure @ ISO 6400. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #elitelongexposures #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #ig_shutterworld #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #milkyway #galaxy #WOTN_MilkyWay #MilkyWayChasers #MilkyWayGrams @eurobodalla (at Tuross Head, New South Wales)

The last time I did a star trail I was on Assatugue island back in March, but something went wrong. There were missing frames. I had two different trail shots to work on. I could show them, but most likely they will never be seen. It still bums me out thinking about it. Needless to say, I've been wanting to get back at it and do more night shots. Trust me, they are coming. This is 45 minutes worth of photos, one taken every 20 seconds. #njshooterz #njspots #njisallgood #just_newjersey #newjerseyisbeautiful #pinebarrens #sjshowus #southjerseyadventures #scenicnj #thisisnj #wildnewjersey #njnature #startrailchasers #jerseyoutdoors #jerseybeautiful #ig_america #adventureworthy #bestworldpics #newjersey #watchthisinstagood #earthfourseasons #naturegeography #itsamazingoutthere #etsy #awesomeearth #universe247 #ipulledoverforthis http://ift.tt/2oV6zJI

#Repost @nightscapades ・・・ 06 Mar 2019. Bright light from the second planet 😱 Venus is the second planet from our Sun, and is very close in size to our home world, with a diameter that’s only 650-odd km (403 miles) less than Earth’s. Due to its planet-wide cloud cover, Venus has a high degree of reflectivity of the sunlight falling upon it. This measure of reflectivity is called the planet’s “albedo”, and for Venus, this figure is around 75 per cent. Even with all of our cloud and shiny oceans, the Earth’s albedo is only about 30 per cent. In plain English? Venus is very shiny. 💫💨 In my photo, you can see just how bright Venus can be, as its light reflects off the ocean’s surface and also illuminates the clouds off the coast. Unfortunately, the clouds blocked most of the light from the Milky Way’s galactic core, but you can still see some of it up above Venus. The planet Jupiter is also present in the shot, about 1/3 in from the left and 1/4 down from the top of the frame. 📷 This image is a single-exposure photograph that I shot with my Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera, a Rokinon 24mm lens @ f/2.4, using a 10-second exposure @ ISO 6400. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 @photographerfocus #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #canon #darkskyshots #earth_tag #ig_astrophotography #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #space #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #milkyway #galaxy #WOTN_MilkyWay #MilkyWayChasers #MilkyWayGrams #venus #jupiter #clouds https://www.instagram.com/p/BusVpBPhUIB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7ebdc0bb96w0

#Repost @nightscapades ・・・ 25 Sep 2018. Bioluminescence on Mars 😱 This whole scene looks very eerie, to me. The time was around 3:00 am, and Mars was very low in the southwestern sky. Its reflection was so bright! The bioluminescence in the water was also brilliant, and I wanted to line the two up so that the light from Mars would be reflected in one of the small pools of bio on the sandbar. 👏 There have been several photos that I’ve posted where I’ve mentioned my amazement that the light from a celestial object, so far away from us, is still strong enough to penetrate our atmosphere and then be reflected off some wet surface. Being able to pair that amazement with my excitement at photographing bioluminescence for the first time was worth all of the failed shots that it took to get this one. Failing is one of the many great things about digital photography, though. Learning from a failed photo is way cheaper and requires so much less time in the digital realm that it ever did in the film days. 📷 This photograph is a single-frame image that I shot with my Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera, a Rokinon 24mm lens @ f/2.4, for a 15-second exposure @ ISO 6400. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 @photographerfocus #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #elitelongexposures #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #ig_shutterworld #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #mars #bioluminescence @eurobodalla https://www.instagram.com/p/BoQMmMUB_5c/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1mijohf6oj1ey

#Repost @nightscapades ・・・ 09 Aug 2018. Bend and stretch, reach for the stars 📆 The end of Milky Way season for 2018 is still a few months away for us here in the Southern Hemisphere, but I am starting to fret about how many more chances I’ll get to photograph my favourite part of the night sky. When I shot this scene at 9:30 pm last Saturday night, the Milky Way’s core had passed overhead, and the rich band of stars, dust and gas that gives our home galaxy its name was now into the western half of the sky. In a month’s time, the stars will be in this position at 7:30 pm. With Daylight Saving cutting in during the first weekend of October, the same view will occur at 6:30 pm but the sun won’t have set yet. Time marches on too quickly! 🌲🌌🌲 I’ve made use of poplars to frame the Milky Way in several shots over the past four years, and I continue to find them useful for that. The warped perspective from using a wide-angle lens seems to be bending the trees towards the mass of light and gravitational attraction present in the galactic core. The location, southwest of Nowra, Australia, was another gem with clear skies, no wind and only three cars passing me in the two hours that I was lurking in the dark with my camera. I just managed to sneak Jupiter into the right-hand edge of the shot, but Mars and its blazing orange light dominate the relatively empty section of sky at the top left. This shot doesn’t quite nail the alignment I was after, and I didn’t manage to get the lighting even across all of the poplars, so I hope you find beauty and interest in it. 📷 For each of the five photos in this vertical panorama I used the following: Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera, Samyang 14mm XP lens @ f/2.8, 25-second exposure @ ISO 6400. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 @photographerfocus #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #milkyway #galaxy #WOTN_MilkyWay #MilkyWayChasers #Poplars @sout

26 Feb, 2018. Shhh! The antennas are sleeping 🤷🏼‍♂️ Yep, I’m stuck for something to post, once again. Too much cloud and too much moon means my diminishing archive of not-previously-posted photos are going to suffer some searching and scouring over the next couple of weeks. 🛰 🚀 Tonight’s image is from my visit to NASA’s Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex at Tidbinbilla, in the Australian Capital Territory. I was located about 3km (1.9mi) from the two antennas that I captured in the shot, using my 50-500mm zoom lens. The two dishes (DSS-45 & 35, I think) were in the “stowed” position for this photo. I guess even deep-space antennas need their beauty sleep! 📷 This photo was shot with a Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera, a Sigma 50-500mm lens @ 313mm focal length @ f/6.3, 10 sec @ ISO 400. @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #elitelongexposures #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #ig_shutterworld #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #nasa #canberra #tidbinbilla #satellite (at Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex)

13 Nov, 2017. Clouds over the cemetery 🛰 After a cloudy day on Sunday the Bureau of Meteorology’s satellite photos for my region seemed to show that the skies were clearing over some of the spots I visit for nightscape photography. What they didn’t seem to show was the coastal clouds that were forming over the sea and blowing across as I drove south from my home in Sydney, towards most of those locations. 🌌💨 There’s a very small window for photographing the Milky Way’s core this far into November. Shoot too close to sunset and the shots are washed out. Shoot too long after astronomical twilight and the Milky Way is too low on the horizon to get a sharp image. The clouds last night saved me the trouble of getting that balance right so I turned, once again, to photographing the Magellanic Clouds. ⭐️ This shot from the Robertson Cemetery in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales shows the Magellanic Clouds hovering over the hillside, with some gravestones and crosses resting under the trees. 📷 A single shot taken with Canon EOS 6D, Rokinon 24mm @ f/2.4, 15 sec @ ISO 3200. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #elitelongexposures #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #ig_shutterworld #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #magellanicclouds #cemetery (at Robertson General Cemetery)

Regrann from @nightscapades - 24 May 2018. Sky and sea 👌🏻🌌 I can think of few more majestic sights than seeing the Milky Way climbing elegantly, gracefully and purposefully over the surging sea. The saying goes that time and tide wait for no-one. The nightly passage of the stars overhead waits not, either. That is one reason I think I will not ever tire of looking up to see this free yet fabulous, simple yet sublime display of light and movement. The show goes on even if nobody is watching, but who wants to waste a show so special? 👍 This single-frame photograph was shot from under the cliffs of Black Head, in Gerroa, New South Wales, Australia. I used a Canon EOS 6D Mk II camera, a Samyang 14mm XP lens @ f/2.8, with an exposure time of 25 seconds @ ISO 6400. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #elitelongexposures #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #ig_shutterworld #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #milkyway #galaxy #WOTN_MilkyWay #MilkyWayChasers #MilkyWayGrams @abcopen @igersillawarra

07 May 2018. A fine, upstanding galaxy Australia 🇦🇺 🐄 🌌 I love creating these vertical panoramic images of the Milky Way standing tall over the Australian landscape. Sadly, Instagram has a limit on how tall images can be, so I have to frame them to fit using an app like Squaready. 🌌 This is a vertical panorama that was created from 25 overlapping images. 30 Apr 2018. Looking up from Down Under 😉 Here in Australia (and New Zealand and the countries of South America and Southern Africa, plus many islands in the South Pacific), we are are lucky to have the Milky Way’s central band and galactic core pass high in the sky during our autumn and winter months. These marvels being up high means there’s less atmosphere between them and the observer than when things are viewed lower down, resulting in sharper views through cameras and telescopes. Observing the night sky in the colder months of the year also means more stable atmospheric conditions, which add further to the quality of the seeing. 🌌 If you can find somewhere dark, safe and not wet with dew you can lay back and look up as this show takes place above. Pointing your camera straight up lets you photograph the scene, as I’ve done here. Poplar trees flanked the rural back-road that I was looking up from. After a bit of shuffling around, and several test shots, I came up with this composition that includes the trees and the Milky Way. To me, the trees seem to be reaching up like hands, in an almost worshipful manner, heralding the majesty and immensity of the universe and all it contains. What do you see? 📷 This photo is a single frame, shot with Canon EOS 6D Mark II, Samyang 14mm XP lens @ f/2.8, using a 20-second exposure @ ISO 6400. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #elitelongexposures #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #ig_shutterworld #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #milkyway #galaxy #WOTN_MilkyWay #MilkyWayChasers #MilkyWayGrams

29 Apr 2018. Moos that make milk, under the Milky Way. 🐄 OK, these four-legged farm animals aren't called “moos”, they’re cows, but try to go with it, please. The photo doesn’t convey the aroma that was in the air next to this field of cows, nor does it pass on to you the sounds that I was subject to as the cows did things to add to that aroma. Hopefully, though, it does bring you the serenity and peace that some, like me, find in rural settings like this one near Kiama, Australia. Whether it be during the day or at night; in clear skies or cloudy; and while walking, cycling or driving, places like this soothe my soul. That being said, give me a moonless night under a cloudless sky and you’ll find me one very contended person! 🌌 The bright, white “star” at the top-left corner of this photo isn’t a star at all, but the giant planet Jupiter. Down at the bottom of the scene, up and a little to the right of the pole in the centre, our solar system’s second-largest planet, Saturn, is also making its presence known. 📷 I shot this photo with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II camera, a Rokinon 24mm lens set to an aperture of f/2.4, for an exposure time of 13 seconds @ ISO 6400. • • • • • @astro_photography_ @space @universe247 #astro_photography_ #astronomy #astrophotography #darkskyshots #elitelongexposures #fantastic_universe #globalpixels #ig_astrophotography #ig_shutterworld #night_shooterz #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #nightscapeoz #nightscaper #nightshooters #stargazing #startalkradio #timelessuniverse #universe #universetoday #WeOwnTheNight_IG #night_excl #StargazingABC #super_longexpo #milkyway #galaxy #WOTN_MilkyWay #MilkyWayChasers #MilkyWayGrams (at Jamberoo, New South Wales)
