Wildcard: talk about anything that you want to that happened this year!
[ My December / Accepting ]
In February, I went on a second honeymoon with my wife to celebrate our 5-year anniversary. We went to Universal Studios in Orlando on a 4 day pass and got to do, really, everything we could possibly want to -- in fact, on the final day we were actually struggling to come up with things we wanted to cover, and ended up returning to our hotel early! We stayed at the Cabana Bay resort, very retro style to the place but quite colorful and bright. We still had a few days left over after our stay and we made good on the time by visiting some of her family who live not terribly far away.
Here are some images of the food we enjoyed during our time at Universal...
Go ahead, it's all right to be jealous.

What should I name this AU?
Alright folks, we've finally come to the point where the diner / motel AU needs a name. I'm torn between AU name vs what I'll name the fic - so for now I'm just going to toss AU out as I shake my empty little skull to try and find the fic name
If at all helpful this is a Sun/Moon only fic. Sun is a server at the Starlight Diner that is connected to the Moonligt Motel at a theme park budget resort in a 1950s nostalgia theme. (Think like... dollar store cabana bay for universal type of thing)

I'm going to Universal next week!! Woo hoo!! I'll be staying at Cabana Bay Beach Resort and I read that characters make appearances in the lobby on Fridays! I hope that Puss and/or Kitty will be there. If not, that's okay because I'll still see them at the park the next day!

Orionid Meteor Shower Lights Up Skies Across Central Florida
The Orionid Meteor Shower is an annual celestial event in late October, known for its striking display of shooting stars. This meteor shower is related to Halley's Comet, as Earth's orbit intersects with the debris left by the comet's passage. The result is a shower of meteors that seem to radiate from the constellation Orion, hence the name.
Orionid meteors are fast and often leave glowing, persistent trails. While the peak activity typically yields around 20 meteors per hour, their speed and brightness make them a captivating sight for stargazers. Observers in dark, clear skies away from light pollution can enjoy this natural spectacle, and the Orionid Meteor Shower remains a highlight in the annual astronomical calendar.

10 Things you HAVE to do at Universal Orlando Resort Hotels
If you are looking for picturesque views, phenomenal dining options, pools that will transport you and your family to full vacation mode, and oh yeah some Universal Orlando Resort theme park perks, too? Well, you're in luck because half of the fun of a Universal Orlando vacation can be found at the eight unique and impeccably themed hotels throughout the resort.
Since I'm such a fan of all of our hotels, I thought I'd gather up ten of my favorite things to do at each Universal Orlando Resort hotel (Universal's Endless Summer Resort- Dockside Inn and Suites or Surfside Inn and Suites, Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort, Universal's Aventura Hotel, Loews Sapphire Falls Resort, Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel).
With eight hotels that all offer something different, it was no small feat for me to narrow this list down to ten! I say explore as many of our hotel offerings as possible during your visit, but for now...
Embark on a Rum-Tasting Journey at Strong Water Tavern.
This experience at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort is an educational blast- you'll be paired with a Rum Captain (coolest job title ever) who will host a tasting of several different rums and teach you about their flavor nuances. Even if you're not a rum-fan, I recommend trying this out or just sitting at the bar and enjoying one of the other great signature cocktails.
2. Bowl a strike at Galaxy Bowl
Well, at least try to bowl a strike. How many hotels have a literal bowling alley in them? Let alone one as cool as you'll find at Cabana Bay Beach Resort. Whether you're staying at this hotel or not you should definitely plan a bowling excursion during your Universal trip.
3. Make a splash at your hotel pool.
What's a vacation to Florida without a day spent at the pool? Each of the hotels deliver their own great pool experience (Cabana Bay Beach Resort even has a lazy river)! be sure to check out our guide to the pools here and don't forget your sunscreen.
4. Get adventurous with the sushi at Orchid Court Lounge & Sushi Bar.
Sushi with a view is the most succinct way I can articulate the magic is this restaurant in Loews Royal Pacific Resort. The sushi menu is vibrant and inventive, the cocktail offerings are one-of-a-kind, and you'll be enjoying it all with a view worthy of the word "Paradise" as the restaurant overlooks the lush and tropical vibes at Royal Pacific.
5. Attempt the Kitchen Sink Challenge at The Kitchen in Hard Rock Hotel.
Think you have what it takes to eat a burger, side of fries, one fried pickle, and a giant slice of The Kitchen Sink Cake in thirty minutes? Even if you can't, I bet it'll be a delicious experience trying.
6. Enjoy gelato on the harbor.
Get yourself a cup of gelato from the Gelateria and soak in the relaxing ambience of the harbor at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. You may even end up having to pinch yourself to come back to reality and remind yourself you're not actually in Italy.
7. Grab a rooftop drink and bite to eat at Bar 17 Bistro.
Take in one of the best views throughout all of Universal Orlando Resort at Bar 17 Bistro, located at the top of Aventura Hotel. Sipping on a Volcano View with a view of Volcano Bay is an unmatched experience.
8. Level up your vacation with one of our themed kid's suites.
Whether the kids in your group are into dinosaurs, Minon's, or music, there's a kids-suite for them! The different kids' suites throughout Universal hotels will really have you sleeping when the action is with the Future Rock Star Suites at Hard Rock Hotel, Despicable Me Kids Suites Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, and Jurassic World Kids Suites at Royal Pacific Resort.
9. Sample all of the exclusive drinks the hotels have to offer.
If you're at Universal Orlando Resort's newest hotel, Dockside Inn and Suites, grab some of the Wet n' Wild-inspired specialty cocktails by the pool. More of a beer drinker? Enjoy the specialty craft beers at Sunset Lounge in Dockside or head to Jake's American Bar at Royal Pacific Resort to try out their menu of specialty beers. Pro-tip for your time at Jake's - all of the Team Members have made-up names there! Be sure to ask your server why they picked theirs.
10. Treat yourself to some pampering at Mandara Spa.
You deserve it! This spa at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel has a ton of options for you to relax and bring your vacation to another level of pure joy and bliss. Besides, after all that roller coaster riding you've been doing in the theme parks, you've earned yourself a massage.
Ok, now I'm at 10 and I knew I'd have to fight the urge to make this list longer! Let me know in the comments below your favorite Universal hotel activities.

My relaunched money saving challenge and the current state of E3
Guess I have some explaining to do, since both polls have already announced Universal as the officially declared winner.
For those who missed out, I did two polls surrounding my future summer vacation plan as to whether it'd be E3 or Universal Orlando Resort in general. And theme park wise, they chose the latter. Many gamers who wanted to visit E3 were pretty much stumped over the fact Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft opted not to partake in future events. Which brought myself into something I'm about to consider doing and fessing up what's been going on. Do me a solid and hit the jump if you're ready!
Reason A: My money saving challenge now in effect again - Because of that one incident where I got broke by paying a scammed gift card and failing to buy a tee from online for Christmas (already sold out), I was given a new raise. And the result of me getting it was that I've relaunched my money saving challenge. Here's how it works: By earning even more money to save up other than a raise, I'll be keeping it nice and simple just by selling baked goods and artwork. In example, chocolate cupcakes with edible alien shaped sugar biscuits; the latter having a cute smile. They'll go around for a dollar, since there's nothing to affect me in any way. If successful of making a proft, I can save up even more until 2025 where my future summer vacation plan will revolve around the selected winner. And yes, it's none other than Universal Orlando Resort. With Universal already dominating the theme park market, coupled with the fact I now have a soft spot on it and the Jurassic series (Mainly Jurassic Park and Jurassic World), the Creative team is also under construction down in the Epic Universe site where the new Donkey Kong coaster will take place. We all know Universal Studios Hollywood has its own Nintendo World area with only one ride involving kart racing and beating against a bunch of turds, but I'm not going to experience that. When the race starts, I'd rather be sleeping and pretend I ran out of batteries. Or I could just avoid the dumb drama and take out my Switch by playing a real arcade racer known as Cruis'n blast anywhere. Back to the DK spot. Besides the new coaster themed from the original Donkey Kong Country, the new area will also have a meet and greet section, merchandising and some interactive activities. For the latter, I'm betting on Diddy with a great big hug as a photo op pose while Donkey Kong stands there feeling a bit lonely. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for King K. Rool being confirmed unless Nintendo gives everyone a new DK game, no matter if it's 2D or 3D. Otherwise, I'm blaming that con artist from hell. As my relaunched money saving challenge commences, visiting Universal Orlando will mark the first time I'll be flying to Orlando by giving other parks like Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure a shot. In addition, I plan to stay at a local hotel that's entirely next to Universal's Epic Universe, where I can enter the park as fast as possible. It'll most likely be around $96 just like the Endless Summer Resort series. Or it could just be like Aventura or Cabana Bay at about $140. Fortunately, because of the construction site currently happening, I'll be taking a breather from various sources like YouTube and other Universal themed news until the holidays arrive. That's where I get to have a huge break from it in case anything new happens so I don't get treated with the slow pace. Visiting Universal Orlando for the first time will be an instant success for my money saving challenge, so I plan to keep it nice and simple without jumping in on the inflation scenario. Not going to raise prices, so don't worry. But the one thing I feel worried about is the next part.
Reason B: The unfortunate and declining state of E3 - Back in the 90's, E3 was the go-to source of announcing new and upcoming video games and consoles targeted for a hardcore demographic. Everything since 11 May in 1995 showcased SEGA, Nintendo and Sony; the former of whom backed out of the console wars around 31 March 2001 when Microsoft entered the scene. E3 is based on three words consisting of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, hence the name, where it featured celebrity appearances and game devs explaining how games and consoles worked. It was actually fun and all, and I was already jealous when everyone wanted to enter the expo itself. E3 is currently located in the heart of the Los Angeles Convention Centre, where everything in California seems to grow a big impact beyond the gaming industry. Yes, there were some embarrassing moments revolving Sony's press conference where Kaz unveiled Ridge Racer being played on the PSP and the announcement of Peggle 2 at Microsoft's. At least Hiroshi Yamauchi gave us an inside look at the Nintendo GameCube prior to his retirement and passing, as well as the PS2 kicking into high gear. But other than some… questionable moments, things took a major turn for the worst. In 2013, a Kremling hunting con artist I refuse to say his name publicly shat all over E3 by announcing Nintendo Directs are taking over the airwaves, killing Yamauchi's iconic press conference appearances since the GameCube's unveiling. Nintendo Direct is a name of a web series that centered around an-- uh, games wholly. When the series was launched, there were many views instead of physical press conferences being set up. And that was way back before Covid-19 forced us to stay home. Thankfully, the animation industry kept going while inside the houses and all because there was no sign of live action content on the horizon. This series was followed by State of Play by Sony Interactive Entertainment and Developer Direct by Microsoft Studios. They all made their own until the big 3 decided to cut ties with E3 press conferences. What did E3 and the ESA decided to do next? Try wooing them back with a little help from ReedPop, noted for its array of PAX events. Add a bit of telephones and you've got a plate full of disappointment and annoyance. To my surprise and shock, I was looking forward to my first trip to E3 for this year. But after reading real reports Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft simultaneously not wanting to do with the event in Los Angeles anymore, turned out it wasn't profitable. I felt deeply sick to my stomach people wanted to keep Nintendo Direct on the air and make it permanent so they won't go through a physical press conference nor allowing me to buy an actual ticket. Being a celeb and a game developer simultaneously don't mix well, so having the Direct every February and September while making telephones a household name would possibly open a huge threat towards E3 press conferences. And I believe it's time for me to come out and express my worried statement that yes, E3 is dead and gone.
Oh, yeah. I have another statement I wanna blab it out: The winner is Universal Orlando.
Alright, you can leave now. Show's over. I'm gonna listen to some Raining Blood to help me take my anger out.

"It can be raining like crazy and then fifteen minutes later it's fine."
That's Kimmer, by the way, commenting on yesterday afternoon's sudden deluge of rain.
Deluge.
Of rain.
All that rain came with intense flashes and branches of lighting accompanied by thunder that was much like a bulldozer careening around an industrial kitchen.
It was very clangy is what I'm saying.
We managed a reservation at Margaritaville for lunch, scoring a table on the covered "Indecision Porch" in front of which everyone on foot passes. From our perch, it's impossible not to see certain things.
For example, a tall young man with his arm draped lazily around the young woman he's with. Kimmer thought first-date. My bet's on they're a couple and she's not super happy about it because at one point he leans down and over to kiss the top of her head and the look on her face at that moment is one of enduring it.
I noticed a number of families wearing uniforms, bright green or orange t-shirts that make them impossible to miss by family members even from low earth orbit. Which is a good thing 'cause all these families have little kids in tow.
I saw a coupla brothers, older and younger, and caught the moment when the older brother put his arm around the younger and they took off running.
Took.
Off.
Running.
I saw a father try to put his arm around his daughter but she kept ducking it. And when he finally relented... she took his hand instead. ♥️♥️♥️
I saw off-season Santa driving an electric cart, dressed from head to toe in a red warm-up suit.
I saw someone wearing a "Free The Dinosaurs" t-shirt and now I want one of those t-shirts too.
Plus, you know, I really do want to free the dinosaurs 'cause I'm environmental like that. 😁
I also realized during lunch that Kimmer's scheduled for us a vacation, a vacation, and a vacation. Right now we're on a three-and-a-half day stay without obligation, responsibility, or agenda. That vacation'll be followed by five days of all things Disney starting Monday. And the last two days are no-obligstion free time again.
Lovely!
Our lunch was also accompanied by a live steel drum band performing popular covers that caused me to indulge a mental game of "Name That Tune". I wasn't very good at it though eventually I figured out most of the songs. Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" was one of the most well known along with the "Guilty Feet Have Got No Rhythm" song by George Michael that's actually "Careless Whisper" by Wham 'cause I just looked it up.
After lunch, it's nap and relax time. And then it's time for night bowling 'cause it's this thing we both really want to do and I stood in line this morning for nearly forty five minutes waiting to get a reservation.
We had a great time, by the way. I started off with three strikes in a row which felt really bizarre. Kimmer took a few frames to get her groove back and ended up improving her score with each game while my game seemed to get worse.
Still.
Night bowling. The missus 'n me.
♥️♥️♥️
Not long after we finished, Linzy's flight landed at Orlando International and, while we were hunting around for a dinner sandwich for her, she managed to land in our hotel's lobby.
She was pretty wiped out much as we were a few evenings ago. It's amazing what air travel takes out of you. Not sure why. And that three hour time difference is always a bigger deal than it has any right to be.
We finished the evening with Linzy getting us hooked on that Netflix series "Lupin", "a retelling of the classic French story about Arsène Lupin, the world-famous gentleman thief and master of disguise." (Wikipedia)
We blew through two hours of this foreign language subtitled action/mystery show, only stopping 'cause it was 230.
A.M.
A few hours later, 6AM, I'm up again 'cause Rachel's plane lands a little after six. It winds up landing about ten minutes after six and I meet her in the hotel lobby after she Lyfts the final leg of her journey to a most welcome sleep 'cause she's been flying all night, having a classic red-eye experience.
Now, we didn't get to bed 'til 230 this morning. And Rachel didn't get any sleep on the plane 'cause they kept it so cold. So I'm figuring she's just gonna maybe say a quick hello to Kimmer 'n Linzy before going to sleep while everyone goes back to sleep.
Haha. NOPE.
We haven't all been together as a family for a long time now and suddenly (and for the week) the band's back together again. So a lot of catching up ensues. And a lot of laughter followed by shhhhh's 'cause it's still earlyish in the morning.
At some point, though, not sure when, I nod off.
It's 10AM!
Yeah. It's 10AM and this is one of those experiences like when I used to get up super early on Sunday morning's to do my paper route and then went back to bed again after finishing it only to get up a few hours later.
It felt like a different day every time. Even after those few hours of sleep.
And so it is this morning.
While the girls remain essentially comatose after their travels, Kimmer slips downstairs to Starbucks whilst I take a glorious shower. "Glorious" in that it really does seem like a completely different day.
:-)
After clearing the room, checking out, and stashing our bags at the front desk for a few hours, the missus 'n I indulge mango smoothies by the pool whilst talking life 'cause that's what old people do. Then we're off to Trader Joe's with Santiago, an Uber driver who shared bits of life with us as we did with him. We talked about New York City where he lived before, we talked a little sights of Orlando where he's lived since oh-three, we talked a little bit Seattle where his best friend's younger brother lives (and also where we were born & raised), and then we talked a touch of Puerto Rico and Hurricane Maria.
It doesn't take us long at Trader Joe's, a coupla bags worth, really, before we hail another Uber back with Carlitos from New York State… . Westchester. We talked old school sports video games as well as the challenges of proper car maintenance before dropping off again for one more best.
Burger.
Ever.
At The Hideaway Bar & Grill.
😁😁😁
Eventually, it's time to end Vacation #1 with a Lyft from our driver, Wanell, to our rental condo at Floridays. We talked the recent Haiti earthquake a little and quickly determining that all his friends and family are okay. Alive and uninjured. Then, because we were passing it, we talked Icon Park with that crazy tall rotating swing guaranteed to induce nausea and vomiting. The Kraken roller coaster was another candidate on which we all voted would produce similar results as we passed Sea World. And then, finally, somehow, we talked alligators 'n fries.
I don't know what to tell you. Rachel was super interested to hear about it.
And so on.
We're pretty much having a Maui experience here where there seems to be more time in our days. More hours than just the 24 we're routinely allotted. Because once you start having to count the time between one event and the next… your day just gets away from you. Sometimes at light speed.
And we're not doing that.
These are not full days of To-Dos. This is nearly all unstructured time. And when it's unstructured time… the day just unfolds and keeps unfolding.
It's crazy how much livable time there is on any given day.
Seriously. There really is.
Anyway, this first vacation, part 1, the one before our Disney vacation, wraps up today. And tomorrow… we dive head first into, well...
We're about to find out.
🙂🤔😁
