December photo challenge, day 6: Handmade. 

Susanna and Eleanor have handmade dolls made from scraps of wood, cloth, yarn, and wool. Sewing doll clothes is good practice for bigger sewing projects someday!

In the 17th and 18th centuries, dolls were usually handmade. Little wooden dolls like Susanna’s were made by Quaker women to demonstrate to other seamstresses ways to make clothes that were plain and modest. And Eleanor’s cloth doll displays the sense of pride in workmanship held by Shakers, who were almost entirely self-sustained in their communities. For girls like Susanna and Eleanor, sewing little doll clothes was typically how girls began to first learn to sew. 

Dolls have existed for nearly all of human history. The first toys ever made were probably dolls, and they have always typically been made by the child who owns it or by their parents and families. It’s been only since the late 19th century that dolls have been mass-produced in factories the way we know them now. Because of how easy it is to make plastic dolls, they’re a more popular toy than ever before. But there’s still something special about a doll who is entirely unique in the world. 

So for today’s photo challenge, I wanted to continue the tradition of handmade dolls for my historical girls. I made Susanna’s doll using a wooden candle cup for the head, thin dowels for the limbs, wool roving for the hair, and scraps of fabric and lace for the clothes. Eleanor’s rag doll is made from scraps of linen and felt, with faux leather for her shoes and yarn for her hair. I used embroidery thread to lace the jacket up the front.

She’s one of the most trustworthy of the dorm. You can tell her all your secrets! She probably won’t remember them anyway! Unique magic: Childs play: Scraps is able to go completely limp, turning her bones into stuffing and is extremely flexible. While her unique magic is active, she also becomes alarmingly lighter and can feel no pain. She also cannot speak or blink, which unnerves some students.

Scarps was a very intelligent and lucky child. She excelled greatly in her studies and was admired by student and teacher alike. Her talents followed her to spelling bees and talent fairs, even granting her acceptance letters into prestigious schools outside of the Port of Jubilee.

Her family owned a quaint toy shop that was inherited from her grandfather. He sadly passed away before she was born, so she never knew the man. Scraps greatly enjoyed helping her family working in the store. Consequently, she was also always surrounded by dolls made by her mother. Many of these were rag dolls make from fabric scraps. They were all handmade and built to last.

However, it became increasingly difficult to continue selling their wears when a new competitor came to town. A bright shiny new toy shop, that sold creations directly from a child's dream. Children were lining up outside of the shop every morning to get a peak at what the owner had in stock. 

Scraps had to watch as her family gradually went into debt while other children celebrated in the spoils of brand new toys. She and her family worked so hard for their grandfather’s shop, and yet this new one was driving their business into the ground! If this kept up... There was no way they could compete...

There was no subduing the jealousy that boiled within her whenever she saw previous costumers throwing out the old toys. On a particular day she observed a group of children discarding their old dolls in exchange for new ones. In a small fit of rage and distaste for this new line of toys, she snatched the doll out of the girls hands, and threw it on the ground, breaking it.

This did not go down well with the other children. They retaliated harshly and began shoving her. She was pushed over and hit the side of her head on a hard surface. The injury caused sufficient damage to her brain. She went completely blind in one eye and gave her memory problems. 

After word spread of scraps outburst, the business for her family's store went from starved to famished. No one wanted to even interact with the trouble child of the old toy shop. All the invitations she received were withdrawn due to her condition. 

Now attending NRC Scraps hopes to piece back together her memory and... Oh! Another thing she needs to do that is really important!!! ... I forgot what it was... Oh well!

No one can tell if she’s winking or blinking.

She has two left feet, cannot dance for the life of her.

She wears the Sombraj mask as a bow in her hair. 

Scraps is not her real name, but that is what she goes by as she can never remember it.
