NYC is getting a new subway map, based on the 1972 Unimark/Vignelli map. I know this puts me in the minority of design aficionados, but I have never cared for the Vignelli map — too much style over substance IMO.

Please join us for our next Open Houses! March 20-21, 2024 10am-4pm.
The NYC subway map that never was. Or at least it was never implemented.
The NYC Subway graphics are some of the most requested artifacts from the Vignelli archives. We acquired this unique “verbal map” aka “The Directory” aka the “How to get there” map in 2022. Our archivist put it on display for the first time in 50 years at our Open Houses in September 2022!
“The Verbal Map described how to reach a destination, which train to get, where to change, and when to get out.” – Massimo Vignelli [comment on Michael Bierut’s essay “Mr. Vignelli Map” for Design Observer]
Printed on very glossy paper in full color, this map is large like the station size maps. Printed in two parts [top and bottom] each half measuring 29.5” x 47.5”.
In the Graphic Standards Manual on Page 3 “Diagram of Basic Sign Distribution” it describes the various maps to be installed:
Maps: System maps (implemented, the famous one),
neighborhood map (not implemented),
‘How to get there’ map (not implemented but we have the prototype!)
From the Graphics Standards Manual on page 75, “The Directory”:
“The directory is designed to help a passenger find his “Destination” and “How to get there” quickly and easily. Each station will have its own directory listing all other station alphabetically and numerically. Each station will be followed by the color disc designating he trains that stop there. If there is no direct train, transfer information will follow the station name. This directory will be placed at all important points in the subways station both inside and outside the turnstiles.”
We also have the Dekalb Av Signage Study “analyzed and completed by Joan Charysyn and Virginia Macintosh” for Unimark International in 1971 which shows a mockup of the various maps and states “A directory and three maps will eventually be in use in all subway stations.”

The Retro Subway Map That Design Nerds Love Makes a Comeback
"When it comes to the New York City subway, what once was old is new again. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wednesday revealed a revamped map of the city’s subway system that takes its cues from a 1970s throwback that was cheered by design connoisseurs and reviled by many traditionalists. It is the first major overhaul of the subway map to be introduced by the authority in almost 50 years. The reveal of the map, on a train platform in Times Square, was another step in the M.T.A.’s campaign to revitalize the subway’s image. The move comes at a time when the authority is lobbying for billions of dollars to upgrade the city’s mass transit system, while fending off criticisms from Washington about crime and congestion pricing. The new map — a brightly colored variation on the current version that sacrifices some geographic detail for clarity — is reminiscent of the 1972 Unimark map, a modernist streamlining of the subways that straightened the curvy contours of the system. The map was short lived, replaced in 1979 by a version resembling the current one. ..."

Designer research for graphic design elective discapline- Massimo Vignelli and Joan Charysyn, the 1972 NYC subway system map redesign
Massimo Vignelli was a Designer that worked in areas such as packaging, public signage and houseware, He was born in Milan 1931 where he would later study archetecture, between 1957 to 1960 he came to america on a fellowship and in 1966 he returned to New York where he co founded the New York branch of Unimark International design firm witch quickly rised in global promenence witch is known for iconic brandings such as American Airlines.
After the Transportation Authroity in New york relseased a new map of their subway sistem in 1967 using colour coding for the first time Vignelli viewed the new map as fragmentated, the following year the Transportation Authority was reformed into the Metropolotan Transportation Authority the chairman wanted to modernise the MTAs branding Vignelli approached the chairman with a proposed draft of a new map for the lower manhatten area, the chairman was impressed and awarded Vignellis design firm the contract for the rebranding.
Under the direction of Massimo Vignelli Joan Charysyn began putting the map together, she was in her mid 20s and was a worker as Vignellis design firm, she was responsable for developing the maps general scheme witch was a difficult task especially considering at the time crucial elements such as geomatry etc had to be worked out in the pre computer age, and most significantly creating the final artwork, unfortounatly when this maps design is talked about her crucial role is often excluded.
The new map was revealed at the 57th street station, 6th avenue on august 4th 1972 and during the following weekend the new map was installed throughout the subway system. The new map was critically acclamed at the time as it made the map easier to read and understand making it more useable and practical for subway commuters, However overtime the map began to become more and more unpopular among commuters using the subway and in 1978 following a change in leadership in the MTA the map was redisgned by John Tauranac and Micheal Hert.

Itt most beleerőltetés nélkül adta magát a lehetőség.

Opportunity – Rising Focus on Baby Health
Taiwan Baby Care Products Market is witnessing growth due to an increasing focus on baby health. Parents are becoming more aware of the importance of using high-quality, safe, and natural products for their babies. This shift towards health-conscious parenting is driving demand for organic and chemical-free baby care items, including skincare, toiletries, and feeding products. Additionally, rising disposable incomes and access to information on best practices for infant care further support this trend in Taiwan's market.
Impact of Escalating Geopolitical Tensions on Taiwan Baby Care Products Market

Potential trade restrictions or sanctions might limit market access to international suppliers and consumers. Consumer spending may also decrease due to economic uncertainties. Ő tervezte például a New York-i metró arculatát.
