SUN MYUNG MOON AND HAK JA HAN ARE LAUNDERING MONEY AND TRAFFICKING DRUGS
Cynthia Elizabeth Tarrago Diaz, President of the International Association of Parlamentarians for Peace (IAPP), a political organization of the Unification Church (Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, FFWPU), was prosecuted for money laundering and drug smuggling to the New Jersey District Court based on FBI's investigation result on November 21, 2019. Tarrago, former MP of Paraguay, shamelessly proposed laundering of international narcotics trafficking proceeds, and even made a proposition of direct trafficking of cocaine. Tarrago played a leading role in connecting top Paraguayan politicians with senior members of the Unification Church when they visited Paraguay in October 2016. At that time, the Unification Church established the IAPP as a subordinate organization in Paraguay. There has been a serious suspicion within the Unification Church that a huge amount of drug money in South America was linked to the leadership of the Unification Church, with Tarrago as a surrogate. Tarrago carried out her drug-related buiness when she visited various international events of the Unification Church. Tarrago met with the undercover agents disguised as drug traffickers at a UPF event at the New Yorker Hotel, owned by the Unification Church, in November 2018 to plot money laundering and propose drug trafficking.

Napoli and Goodbye
Well, here we are! It is my last day here in Cosenza, and the goal has been reached, this is the final post and the blog will be up to date. At the beginning of last week I was lucky enough to go visit the city of Naples, called Napoli in Italian. I travelled there by train on Monday morning, and met a good friend at the train station. She is also an Intercultura student, originally from Romania, and has been living in a neighborhood of Napoli this year. This is the view from next to her apartment building!
We did the exchange week in Veneto together and hung out at both of the Castellamare camps, so we knew each other pretty well. She was super welcoming and invited me to come stay at her house for a few days, offering to show me around the city! Napoli is rich in history, good food, and beautiful architecture.
I arrived in the early afternoon on Monday, and we decided to take the subway to get to her neighborhood to drop of my bag and eat some lunch. That subway car was PACKED though. Like almost unbearably. And the heat. I can’t even explain how hot it was all three days— everyone was sweat soaked, even with a breeze nothing cooled down. It was a humid heat as well, muggy and thick. Sleeping at night was nigh impossible! Anyways back to the real story here- it wasn’t the heat or the fullness of the subway that made it hard. They contributed, but the real kicker was old italian ladies. Yep. I swear, no matter where you stand or try to get out the way, an old lady is going to shove her way through you complaining “Devo Usciiiiiiireeeeee” with the strength of a small cow. I think I got a few bruises!
Anyhow, Monday afternoon we took a bus into the city. We got off at Piazza Dante (shown below) where there is a doorway to the historic part of the city in a section of the old walls.
We did a small tour of some churches in the historic center, first visiting the Basilica di Santa Chiara, which had these breathtaking super-tall stained glass windows.
Then we went on to Gesù Nuovo, which doesn’t even look like a church on the outside but is ridiculously, beautifully, and elaborately decorated on the inside. I loved the detail of the marble, covering every surface.
Last, we went to San Domenico Maggiore, which looks like fortress from the outside. Inside the ceiling is fantastic, and the stained glass windows caught the light in the perfect way to create colored patterns all over the inside of the church. I think we got lucky with timing in terms of the light, but it was magnificent.
From there we walked down to the waterfront, pausing in the Piazza del Plebiscito (the city’s main square) to see the replica of the pantheon San Francesco da Paola, built in the neoclassical style drawing pretty obviously from the Pantheon in Rome.
Here is the view from the waterfront, seen as we walked the Lungomare. That mountain is vesuvius and the city beside it is Pompeii.
Continuing along the lungomare, we went to the Castel dell’Ovo. This is the oldest fortification in Napoli, being built during the 12th century by Normans, and later used as a prison. We went inside and I got these cool views:
After seeing the castle, we returned to the city center and got the honest-to-god best gelato I’ve ever eaten. I’m so serious right now, if you go to Napoli and don’t eat this gelato it should be a crime. The place is called Il Gelato Menella, and they make their own cones on site and the gelato is at the perfect temperature (kinda drippy) and for an extra 50 euro cents you can get a great big dollop of whipped cream on top. The taste was decadent, I wanted to eat every single flavor there. Just wow. A+++
That night we returned back to my friend’s apartment for dinner and sleep, and seeing as it was truly to hot to sleep and I was at the time reading Harry Potter #3 in italian, I stayed up most of the night to finish the book (first and only book I’ve read front to back in italian!). Also as anyone who’s ready HP3 knows, once you get to the part where the golden trio visit Hagrid’s hut before the execution it’s literally inconceivable to put it down until you reach the end.
On Tuesday morning we went over to the Capodimonte palace (top of the hill), which is also known as the Bourbon Palace. Started in 1738 by Charles the II, King of the Two Sicilies, it was completed by his grandson Ferdinand II in 1840. It was the summer residence and home of the family’s art collection, in fact part of the palace was specifically constructed to house their works. It passed to the House of Savoy with the Italian unification, and later to the Dukes of Aosta. Each group that owned the building added to the collection and the complex history of the space. Today it is free for all people under 18 to visit, which was perfect because we were trying to do the budget tour of Napoli. They had some original Michelangelo drawings, Titians, Bruegels, lots of Flemish works, and many local Neapolitan painters. It was a joy to visit!
Outside there is a large public park filled with paths good for running, biking, walking, or even horseback riding I think. From there we got this lovely view down to Napoli Centrale with the sea and just the faintest outline of Capri on the horizon!
In the afternoon we went back to the city center to see the Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale di Napoli), which was another residence of the Bourbon kings of the Two Sicilies and later occupied by Murat. It was worked on pretty much sporadically throughout its whole history, starting at its construction during the 17th century.
They had a suite of rooms still decorated in the original style open to visit (again free for minors!!!) which was awesome. Everything was opulent, even the materials used were gorgeous, and every room had a custom wallpaper.
One room had this cool contraption, apparently contracted as a pre-web browser system of tabs. You could put a different book on every shelf, and leave them open to a particular spot, just spinning the wheel for fast referencing.
Once we left the palace we stopped at the Galleria Umberto I (kind like a mall but super beautiful with this glass ceiling) where we went to La Sfogliatella Mary. This bakery, which is more like a hole in the wall, is a very traditional place to get the typical Napoli sweet.
This is my sfogialtella, partially eaten, so good.
After that we went to Il Duomo di Napoli, which is quite impressive from the outside and painted extensively within.
Finally, we went to San Lorenzo Maggiore with these lovely windows in the back.
Back here in Cosenza, I’ve passed a busy week. It seems like every day I have planned a visit to say goodbye to a different friend! I also baked some ultimate browned butter chocolate chip cookies, using up some of the stranger ingredients I had brought to my host family’s house.
On Wednesday I FINALLY went to see the Cosenza castle, Castello Svevo-Normano. I went with my Intercultura friend from Paraguay, and we actually ended up walking all the way there which was quite an accomplishment because it is on the top of the biggest hill that Cosenza vecchia is built upon, creating a 40 minute uphill/stairs walk.
The castle was pretty cool, but perhaps even more delightful was the view from up there. You could see all of Cosenza, in a way I never had before. A fitting way to “salutare” the city.
Today I’ve been doing a lot of packing, getting preemptively sad about leaving Italy, and dreading the next two days of exhausting travel. However, I am super excited to see you all in the states again! It’s a strange mix of feelings, but I’m sure they will all work themselves out. It has been a lovely year, and I would like to thank all of you for reading this blog. I hope you’ve enjoyed at least some of it!

Speculating on Banco de Crédito
The so-called “archives of terror” discovered by a human rights lawyer in Paraguay over a decade ago continue to yield new information on the cooperation between the de facto regimes that ruled much of South America in the 1970s and 1980s. These documents confirmed that Moon-owned banks in Uruguay were used as a part of Operation Condor, though it remains unclear to the public to what extent.
I have heard before that in the 80s, Paul Schafer’s Colonia Dignidad community in Chile, which became close allies of Pinochet and for many years hosted the military and its torture chambers for political prisoners, had money in several banks, including in Argentina and Uruguay. Were they by chance using Moon’s Banco de Crédito in Uruguay?

An Unexpected Trip to the South
In January 1980, Unification Church members worldwide were planning a fitting celebration of Reverend Moon's sixtieth birthday. In the Korean tradition, the sixtieth birthday is the most important, and I had been designated as chairman of the preparations committee. We had already begun renovations of the New Yorker Hotel, where the celebrations were to be held, and preparations for the event were under way. The date of Reverend Moon's birthday was February 21. (In the classical Korean tradition, birthdays are reckoned according to the lunar calendar and are celebrated on a different solar calendar date each year.) I was completely focused on these activities when suddenly, two weeks beforehand, Reverend Moon requested that I come see him. When I got there, I received an instruction that struck me like a lightning bolt out of the blue. "Get down to South America right away," he said. "The world is being sucked down in a communist whirlpool, and the situation in South America is critical. They can't hold out much longer. We have to take the VOC movement to Central and South America without delay. It's far more pressing than the preparations for my birthday."
I answered Reverend Moon. "Father, couldn't I wait until after the celebration? We have only two weeks left..."
Rather than being persuaded, Reverend Moon became more adamant. "You know the kind of mission I have and yet you say such things. Why should you wait for two weeks? Don't you know how much I feel the pressure of every passing day?"
In the light of his words, I had no choice but to say, "Yes, Father. I will leave tomorrow."
The next day, I was on a flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina, accompanied by Colombia-born Antonio Betancourt as my interpreter and assistant.
When we arrived, I was amazed at Reverend Moon's foresight in sending me on this urgent trip. Argentina was in an uproar. The combination of Marxist-Leninist guerrilla attacks and the seeming inability of the United States to comprehend and respond to their situation had left the Argentine leaders at their wit's end. The national government, the police in Buenos Aires and other cities, and the army had all but given up in the face of cunning propaganda and terror tactics by the communist guerrilla group the Tupamaros.
The first thing I did was gather news reporters and announce that Reverend Moon had a solution. I strongly emphasized the need for an ideological as opposed to a purely pragmatic approach. I then introduced the CAUSA movement and declared that we had an ideological counterproposal that could defeat Marxist-Leninist thought and save Argentina.
This bold proclamation was received like a promise of rain to end a long drought. The next day, the contents of my press conference were featured in stories in the major newspapers. After that, the doors of the government were flung wide open. I was able to meet many political leaders in Argentina, both from the ruling and opposition parties, and was enthusiastically received by leaders of the police and army as well. In the end, I had a personal interview with President Jorge Rafael Videla in his residence.
These favorable results were then carried to neighboring Uruguay and Paraguay, whose situations mirrored that of Argentina. Indeed, Uruguay had established a military regime to prevent a communist takeover. I had a conference with both Lt. Gen. Luis V. Queirolo, head of the military forces, and the civilian president, Dr. Aparicio Mendez.
All the people I met developed great expectations for the CAUSA movement. Their national fates were at stake. An ideological counterproposal that could defeat Marxist ideology was the answer to their prayers.
In Paraguay, the head of state was the longtime president Gen. Alfredo Stroessner. He had come to power in a coup d'etat designed to block the communization of the nation but had been unable to make the transition back to a functioning democracy. He was in a quandary how to prevent the infiltration of Marxist revolution. He needed a messiah, and through me, he was able to find him: Reverend Moon.
After spending ten days in these three nations, I returned to New York enthusiastic and hopeful. When I reported the results to Reverend Moon, he responded, "Great! You brought me the best birthday present of all! From this point on, I want you to spread the CAUSA movement throughout Central and South America. This is the way to save the world."
The birthday celebrations in February came and went. In April, Reverend Moon invited some twenty Argentine anti-communist leaders to New York. Thomas Ward, one of our most capable CAUSA lecturers, taught them the basics of VOC thought, even though our lecture series had not yet been thoroughly prepared. Upon completion of the seminar, our guests were amazed.
These leaders were invited to visit Reverend Moon at East Garden. This was the first time a group of South American leaders had the chance to meet Reverend Moon and listen to him directly. He outlined not only his plans to turn the tide of communism but to bring about a renaissance of truth and morality in the world. They had never heard such ideas before, and by the end of the evening emotions were high and the spirit of God was present.
After this event, Reverend Moon organized the structure of the CAUSA movement. He selected the key leaders, including graduates of the Unification Theological Seminary at Barrytown, New York. Antonio Betancourt became the secretary-general and Thomas Ward the executive vice president. Also chosen were William Lay (who became head of the CAUSA Research Institute), Brazil's Paul Perry, Juan Sanchis from Spain, Mexican-American Beatriz Gonzalez-Steeghs, and Americans William Selig and Jean Jonet-Rondan. Together, they were an impressive and capable crack contingent that stood on the frontline of the CAUSA movement. (They were later joined by many others, including Jesus Gonzales, Roger Johnstone, Frederick and Lourdes Swans, Mark Tobkin, Paul Tobkin, Celia Fraga, Yolanda Watanabe, Hitoshi Nagai, Mark Wilenchek, and others.) Each of the lecturers was thoroughly at home in both English and a second language, usually Spanish.
Under my direction, these staff members worked diligently to reshape VOC thought into the unique CAUSA format. To improve the effectiveness of our teaching methods, we also prepared audio and visual-based materials. Finally, we were ready to test the waters. Would the CAUSA approach be successful?
In December 1980, the first country to request onsite CAUSA training was Bolivia. The Bolivian authorities had gathered forty-five intelligent young people from the nation's elite and asked us to educate them in the CAUSA thought. Most of the young people of South America, however, were infatuated with leftist and Marxist thought at that time. Among the group, many were already deeply influenced by Marxist thought. This added greatly to the challenge, and to the opportunity.
Before we traveled to Bolivia, the CAUSA staff visited East Garden to receive instructions from Reverend Moon. His directions at that time became CAUSA's guiding principles. "The CAUSA movement is a movement of truth that uses Godism to reform and re-create human beings," he said. "The CAUSA movement is an ideological movement, not an academic one. If you don't bring about a revolution in people's heart and character, you will have failed. To bring the revolution, you have to move their hearts. Don't just lecture but revive people's souls. Prepare for a two-hour talk by praying for six hours. What I'm saying is, use spiritual power to bring about a reformation in the people. You should take leftist sympathizers and make brave VOC fighters out of them."
Inspired by his remarks, the team departed for Bolivia. Our destination was a remote and secluded area in the Bolivian Altiplano, in the shadow of snowcapped Andes mountain peaks. For ten days, the CAUSA team invested all its dedication and passion in a test of wills with those forty-five young people. It was a wrestling match that required both spiritual and physical endurance.
During that time, an unusual spiritual phenomenon happened to the participants. Many had dreams of Reverend Moon, though not one had ever met him. The human revolution we wanted to spark in these young people progressed much faster than we had expected. On the last day, some government officials came to observe the results of the training. When they stepped into the lecture hall, they were moved to tears.
"How could they have been changed so much? It feels like there are warriors from Heaven in here," they said, feeling the tangible success of the seminar directly.
After seeing these results, it was only natural for the Bolivian government to ask the CAUSA movement to educate ten thousand military cadets and university students. It decided to cast its lot with CAUSA and entrust the future of the nation to the great power of the CAUSA movement, which had captured the hearts and imagination of the young people.
From this point on, the nations of South America, which had felt helpless in the face of waves of Marxist infiltration, received the CAUSA movement wholeheartedly. From the start of 1981, I became extremely busy, visiting nations one after another with the CAUSA team to hold seminars.
Wherever I went, the highest leaders welcomed me. I testified to them about the purpose of the CAUSA movement and the thought of Reverend Moon. One time, when we were holding a seminar for the national leaders of Bolivia, the president attended the opening ceremony. Another time, President Aparicio Mendez of Uruguay invited all the members of his cabinet and their wives to the presidential residence for a banquet and asked me to give a CAUSA lecture there. There were even instances when, in some nations, I gave CAUSA lectures at cabinet meetings.
CAUSA seminars, sponsored by the nations involved, were held in Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Brazil. In each one, the Catholic Church supported the CAUSA movement. We felt that we were working hand in hand with the pope and Catholics throughout the world for a common cause.
In Argentina, seminars were held at the Catholic University of La Plata, convened under the sponsorship of Archbishop Antonio Plaza. The message the archbishop delivered at the seminar was particularly noteworthy. Quoting from Popes Leo VIII and Paul VI, Archbishop Plaza warned, "A humanism closed in on itself, and not open to the values of the spirit and to God who is their source -- that is, communism -- is false humanism. History shows us man's need and dependence upon the Supreme Being." He added, "Reverend Moon's CAUSA movement, which seeks to challenge communism with the Godism ideology, is the hope of South America and the hope of humankind. I highly praise their courage and conviction."
When officials at that university witnessed Reverend Moon's imprisonment in 1984, they were irate. In an expression of support, the university sent a contingent to the United States with an honorary doctorate honoring Reverend Moon during his imprisonment. This honorary degree was received on Reverend Moon's behalf by his wife, Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon, at the United Nations in New York.
The university also conferred an honorary doctorate on me in recognition of CAUSA's results in South America. This was a strong testimony to how great an influence CAUSA achieved.
The CAUSA Movement Goes to Brazil
Because of the size and significance of Brazil, the largest country in South America, its opening to the CAUSA work was particularly important. Since the language is Portuguese, not Spanish, it took a little longer to prepare to work there. In time, we gathered the political, economic, social, religious, athletic, and cultural leaders of the nation for a historic seminar.
Although it was an unprecedented success, shortly after the program was completed, a series of violent and lawless incidents occurred. Leftists who felt threatened by the advances we had made attacked the Unification Church in all parts of the country, stoning and in some cases setting fire to buildings, destroying property, and threatening members. This rampage was inflamed by Brazil's leftist media, which fanned anti-Unificationist hysteria and literally called for violence. In the end, the incident deeply brought home to us just how close the communist threat was to all of South America, and Brazil in particular.
This was a turning point of sorts. I now felt keenly that the CAUSA movement in South America was actually a war we were fighting at the risk of life and limb. Of course, our struggle was an ideological one, but I realized that we needed to put our lives on the line to win.
After the violence in Brazil, the CAUSA team did nor retreat. The fight with the leftist press was fierce and exhausting, and we didn't know when or where we might he the target of a terrorist attack. Yet every day we advanced, all the while facing various kinds of illegal and violent opposition. Despite the opposition, wherever we went there were always righteous people ready to take up our cause. In fact, the more intense the opposition, the more Heaven mobilized patriots and people of goodwill to support us.
CAUSA Wins Over Central America
Without even time to catch our breath, the CAUSA movement, so successful in the Southern Cone (the southern part of the South American continent that includes Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, and Argentina), proceeded to focus its efforts on Central America.
With Soviet support, communists had successfully taken control of Nicaragua in 1979 and were waging a war of attrition in El Salvador. To most observers, it seemed just a matter of time before that nation, too, fell to Marxists. The CAUSA team drew a line of defense focusing on three nations: El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.
We began an intense schedule of seminars. On one occasion, I conducted a seminar at the El Salvador Military Academy for army officers scheduled to go directly into action against the guerrillas. Because the situation in San Salvador was so dangerous, I was protected twenty-four hours a day by soldiers. I was wearing fatigues, the first time I had worn a uniform since I had taken off my South Korean army uniform many years earlier. This experience accentuated for me how much our lives were at stake in this fight, how much this ideological war was in fact a life-and-death struggle.
As I lectured to officers who were to go into battle the next day, all of us were totally earnest. One officer was killed by an enemy shell the following day. A crumpled diary, found in his pocket, contained words he had written while listening to the CAUSA lecture:
Through this CAUSA seminar, I learned why we have to fight and win over the communist guerrillas. At this point, I'm happy to give my life for my country. Even if I am killed while protecting my homeland and freedom, I won't regret it. I'm not afraid to go into battle.
Who could help but shed tears at these last written words of that officer? When I heard the news, I wept, silently wishing this patriot every happiness in Heaven.

The Unification Church has been involved in drugs trafficking and money laundering from the end of the 1950s, since it joined links with the CIA / KCIA. The National President of the Unification Church in Côte d’Ivoire, Ivory Coast, called Adama Doumbia, Korean missionary Hae Yong Kim, Mr. Bakary Camara, the American missionary Kathy Rigney, and other members of the Unification Church were all involved in a large network of drugs trafficking initiated by Sun Myung Moon. They paid a bribe of $15,000 USD to the Ivorian government to hush up the case.

The second example of moonie drugs trafficking and money laundering comes from Paraguay in South America. Paraguay is at the center of the large drug trafficking network. The South American representative of the Unification Church has been arrested and prosecuted for drug-related money laundering and smuggling by the FBI of the US. According to the US department of Justice on January 20, 2020, US Attorney’s Office prosecuted three Paraguay nationals including Cynthia Elizabeth Tarrago Diaz, President of the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), a political organization of the Unification Church, for money laundering and drug smuggling to the New Jersey District Court on November 21, 2019, based on results of the FBI’s investigation. Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han own an enormous estate in Pantanal in Paraguay and use it as a trafficking center of drugs. In addition Sun Myung Moon has his fleet of fishing ships for trafficking drugs from South American coast to the United States.

CIA, Moonies Cooperate in Sandinista War

In the Central American hinterlands, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish CIA operatives from the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s disciples. They appear to be working in harness against the communist-tainted Sandinista regime in Nicaragua.
This troubles at least one Pentagon analyst, now stationed in Korea, who has warned the White House that the CIA-Moonie connection could cause possible political damage to President Reagan’s re-election campaign.
The analyst’s unofficial memo, “Potential Problems,” has been slipped to my associate Donald Goldberg.
“Current Moonie involvement with government officials, contractors and grantees [in Central America] could create a major scandal,” the memo warns. “If their activities and role become public knowledge, it will unite both the left and the right in attacking the administration.”
The memo continues: “If efforts are not taken to stop their growing influence and weed out current Moonie involvement in government, the president stands a good chance of being portrayed in the media as a poor, naive incompetent who is strong on ideology and weak on common sense. …
“The likelihood of a reporter or a Democratic staff member piecing the total picture together is too great to be neglected. Any thought that this festering problem will go away if ignored is foolish.”
The “total picture” of Moon’s activities in Latin America is not clear. But there is no doubt that the Korean messiah – now in prison for income tax evasion [and document forgery and perjury] – has established a solid presence in the region, with ties to right-wing groups and U.S.-supported guerrillas.
My associate John Lee Anderson reports from Central America that CAUSA international, Moon’s political front, has representatives working in programs that help the CIA in its “contra” war against the Sandinista government.
CAUSA maintains a publicity office in Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital, but its principal activities are in the field. CAUSA provides cash and other aid to Honduran-based Nicaraguan contras and Honduran right-wing political groups. Many anti-Sandinista guerrillas wear red CAUSA T-shirts with a map of the world on them.
But CAUSA and its affiliate, the Refugee Relief Freedom Foundation, provide more than T-shirts to rebel groups. They also funnel supplies to refugee families in and near contra camps and pay for trips by rebel leaders to the United States.
One contra leader, Fernando “El Negro” Chamorro, told my associate that as early as 1981, CAUSA representatives sent him on an all-expenses paid trip to the United States to try to unify the Nicaraguan exile groups.
The airlift of supplies to the rebels by Moon’s Unification Church has escalated since congress cut off CIA funding for the contras. The administration has been attempting to “privatize” its war against the Sandinistas and is apparently willing to work with Moon’s people.
Footnote: A Unification Church official denied that the church is engaged in any but religious activities in Central America.

SOUTH AMERICA: ‘Archives of Terror’ Yield New Horrors by Darío Montero The so-called "archives of terror" discovered by a human rights lawyer in Paraguay over a decade ago continue to yield new information on the cooperation between the de facto regimes that ruled much of South America in the 1970s and 1980s. MONTEVIDEO, Sep 16, 2005 (IPS) - Paraguayan activist and lawyer Martín Almada visited Uruguay this week to hand over documents recently found in the archives of terror, which indicate that the number of Uruguayans who were detained in Paraguay during the dictatorial regimes was much greater than human rights groups had previously realised. In December 1992, Almada, who was held as a political prisoner and tortured in his country in the 1970s, came across a room full of official records in a police station near the Paraguayan capital. The hundreds of thousands of documents that he basically discovered by accident pertain to the torture and forced disappearances carried out by the dictatorship of Gen. Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989) in Paraguay. But the archives of terror are especially important because they contain secret documents shedding light on Operation Condor, a coordinated plan among the military governments that ruled Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay in the 1970s and 1980s, aimed at tracking down, capturing and eliminating left-wing opponents. Thanks to legal action by Almada, the archives of terror are open to public scrutiny. They are stored on the premises of Paraguay's Supreme Court, in the Centre of Documentation and Archives for the Defence of Human Rights.

Former Uruguayan intelligence agent Jorge Carlos Guldenzoph Nunez sentenced for dictatorship crimes.
The courtroom was charged with a palpable mix of apprehension and hope as survivors, now decades older, stood to recount their harrowing tales. They spoke of electric shocks, beatings, and other forms of torture that left indelible scars on both body and psyche. Approximately 50 survivors shared their testimonies, painting a vivid picture of the horrors inflicted upon them. The indictment against Jorge Carlos Guldenzoph Nunez highlighted his active role in the arrest, interrogation, and forced confessions of dissidents, laying bare the systemic cruelty that characterized the regime's approach to dissent. Guldenzoph Nunez's trial, which began in July 2020, was a culmination of years of tireless advocacy by victims and human rights organizations.

The dictatorship in Uruguay, spanning from 1973 to 1985, left a deep and lasting impact on the nation's collective memory. It's estimated that 20% of the population was imprisoned at some point, with around 200 citizens murdered and an additional 191 disappearing without a trace. These numbers, while stark, barely scratch the surface of the pain and trauma experienced by those who lived through the regime's darkest days.

CIA, Moonies versus Sandinistas

WASHINGTON – In the Central American hinterlands, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the CIA’s operatives from the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s disciples. They appear to be working in harness against the communist-tainted Sandinista regime in Nicaragua.
This troubles at least one Pentagon analyst, now stationed in Korea, who has warned the White House that the CIA-Moonie connection could cause possible political damage to President Reagan’s re-election campaign.
The analyst’s unofficial memo, titled “Potential Problems,” has been slipped to my associate Donald Goldberg.
“Current Moonie involvement with government officials, contractors and grantees (in Central America) could create a major scandal,” the memo warns. “If their activities and role become public knowledge, it will unite both the left and the right in attacking the administration.”
The memo continues: “If efforts are not taken to stop their growing influence and weed out current Moonie involvement in government, the president stands a good chance of being portrayed in the media as a poor, naive incompetent who is strong on ideology and weak on common sense. …
“The likelihood of a reporter or a Democratic staff member piecing the total picture together is too great to be neglected. Any thought that this festering problem will go away if ignored is foolish.”
The “total picture” of Moon’s activities in Latin America is not clear. But there is no doubt that the Korean Messiah – now in prison for income tax evasion [and forgery and perjury] – has established a solid presence in the region, with ties to right-wing groups and U.S.-supported guerrillas.
My associate John Lee Anderson reports from Central America that CAUSA international, Moon’s political front, has representatives working in programs that help the CIA in its “contra” war against the Sandinista government.
CAUSA maintains a publicity office in Tegucigalpa, the Hondoran capital, but its principal activities are in the field. CAUSA provides cash and other aid to Hondoran-based Nicaraguan contras and Hondoran right-wing political groups. Many anti-Sandinista guerrillas wear red CAUSA T-shirts with a map of the world on them.
But CAUSA and its affiliate, the Refugee Relief Freedom Foundation, provide more than T-shirts to rebel groups. They also funnel supplies to refugee families in and near contra camps and pay for trips by rebel leaders to the United States.
One contra leader, Fernando “El Negro” Chamorro, told my associate that as early as 1981, CAUSA representatives sent him on an all-expenses paid trip to the United States to try to unify the Nicaraguan exile groups.
The airlift of supplies to the rebels by Moon’s Unification Church has escalated since congress cut off CIA funding for the contras. The administration has been attempting to “privatize” its war against the Sandinistas and is apparently willing to work with Moon’s people.
Footnote: A Unification Church spokesman denied that the church is engaged in any but religious activities in Central America.
