October 13, 2017 -- Friday the 13th
Today is a very special day to H-hmmom -- Friday the 13th IN OCTOBER. 2006 was the last time the cursed day fell in the most frightening month and it will not happen again until 2023. It’s also even more special because it’s the 13th Friday the 13th since 2010 ... although I guess you can always make that work by changing the “since”-date.
So, of course, tonight’s movie is the horror classic Friday the 13th (1980)(but you can really pick any of the 12 movies in the franchise. (Suck it, Chucky (see H-hmmom 2017 movie 6)). For those of you that have been living in the woods and don’t know -- Friday the 13th was one of the original slasher movies and its infamous star, Jason Vorhees, is now well known in pop culture. The original story centers on a group of debaucherous camp counselors on their first day at Camp Crystal Lake. Of course, then they all get slaughtered in increasingly inventive and cringe worthy ways. Spoiler:
(What’s gotten in to you, KB?)
Movie: Friday the 13th Showing: Most platforms for $2.99, local inde theaters and probably cable television Genre: Slasher When: TODAY!
But, because today is so special AND because the organizers of H-hmmom are feeling vindictive-- the Creepmissioner has selected a number of horrific options for all sorts of media.
IN THEATERS
Happy Death Day: Happy Death Day is like Ground Hog Day but instead of Bill Murray we get a “super cool” college girl that relives the day of her murder. It also happens to be her birthday. YOLO...Not! Here’s a trailer.
STREAMING
The Babysitter: What happens when you find out your hot babysitter is part of a satanic cult? No idea, but you can find out in Netflix’s new horror/comedy movie: “The Babysitter.” Time to go to bed...FOREVER! Here’s a trailer.
Lore: Amazon’s adaption of the hit podcast Lore is released today, and if spending money on Friday the 13th makes you squeamish, this is a good option for you (presuming you have Amazon Prime). Lore, the podcast, is critically acclaimed podcast about true stories in the RL. If the show is anything like the podcast, it should be pretty good.
PODCASTS
Aside from Lore, there are number of terrifying podcasts, two we recommend today are:
Spooked -- presented by the team of NPR’s hit story telling podcast Snap Judgment. Spooked is a story telling podcast that captures some of the scariest real life experiences you’ll hear. If you can only listen to one podcast, we recommend today’s release: “Unholy Water.” The second story will leave you wondering if you should ever go camping again.
Darkest Night -- If you are looking for a long delve into the terrifying, try Darkest Night. The audio drama is in it’s second season and tells the story of a young lab tech’s unusual and often horrible experiences working at the Roth Labdow Center.
Haunted Places - the podcast’s name explains it all. The first episode focuses on the lesser known Cecil Hotel in L.A. The location has a sordid history and played host to Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker, and the Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, the night before her disappearance. For those of you that prefer crime, you’ll also find Cults, Serial Killers and Unsolved Murders on the same network. Both are well produced.
(Checking in?) YOUTUBE
YouTube has become host to a number of short horror films that are well worth watching. Some of these shorts are arguably more terrifying because their plots are so simple...and disturbing. Rather than summarize them, we here at H-hmmom will let you find out for yourselves!
The Moonlight Man
Sleepy Eyes
Alone Time
The Whistle
Mannequin
