Exalted Secret Santa Journal: 2020

Apologies for the slight delay! My journal this year is going to be pretty much the same one as last year; I was working on an additional reference but it absolutely got away from me, so I’ll give it more time and save it for next year. Without further ado:

Daia Shan- Serenity Caste Sidereal

Once just a troublesome junior bureaucrat in the halls of Yu-Shan, Daia truly gained infamy upon her selection to accompany a strike team of Exalted heroes on a mission into the depths of the worldbody of the Yozi Oramus, and her subsequent escape and return from that impossible prison, nearly a thousand years later. The experience left her profoundly changed; even now, the spite of Oramus hangs like a mantle around Daia, ensuring that the waking world she fought so hard to return to will never feel like anything more than a dream. And then, of course, there is the matter of the power she took from the Sevenfold Peacock willingly… and how that power might be changing her still.

Daia is a somewhat petite woman, belying an athletic build. She is ethnically from the Blessed Isle, with dark grey hair that she prefers to wear up, usually in a bun or a knot. Her face, which she tries but fails to keep free of stress and worry lines, is usually found bearing a smirk or an expression of dangerous faux-politeness. Her eyes bear the iconic starry blue of the Serenities caste, but are also shot through with bands of a strange prismatic iridescence. She bears a large pair of bull horns atop her head, a mutation received during her time inside the Worldbody. The nature of the power bequeathed to her by Oramus is such, though, that her very nature is beginning to blur around the edges, and it is not unusual for her day-to-day appearance to fluctuate strangely as mutations come and go like glitches. She is a bit of a fashionista, favoring blues, dramatic and sharp femme looks (she avoids ruffles and prefers sleeker outfits), and jewelry of all sorts (a lot of it). She rarely wears the same exact outfit twice, so do not feel obligated to stick to the reference- you can get creative! She wears makeup, but prefers cool colors and an understated application.

Daia’s most important accessory is her longfang, the Sevenfold Peacock’s Tailfeather. Forged from starmetal, orichalcum, and a crystalline shard of Oramic essence, the weapon contains knowledge of every martial arts technique known by every user to have ever wielded it, and seems to hunger for more to the point where its obsession has bled over into Daia herself. Even more potently, it bears deep within its core the secret to a martial art concocted by the Dragon of Not himself, whose charms grant the power to ignore the limits of impossibility at the cost of making the wielder more and more alien to the waking world. It is a temptation that Daia has drunk deep of, despite all signs pointing to that being a very bad idea. Daia sees the spear as a trophy stolen from her greatest nemesis, but it’s very possible the Yozi himself sees it as a clever snare for hubristic Sidereals. The blade of the weapon is prismatic crystal that resembles a jagged bird’s beak, the pole is jet black starmetal shot through with an orichalcum starmap of constellations, and the orichalcum pommel is fashioned to look like seven golden peacock feathers woven together into a sphere.

While her exaltation may brand Daia a chosen of the Maidens, the elder Sid is a loose cannon, an agent of Heaven in only the most general of terms. She is mercurial, theatrical, fond of causing petty chaos, and utterly disinterested in the politics of the Bureau, unless there is way for her to stir up drama. She has tendency to get ahead of herself with her schemes, and the vast majority of her ‘downfalls’ can be traced back to her own hubris. Beneath all that, she is a lonely woman who feels adrift in a world that no longer feels real to her. She’s a terrible flirt, a huge showoff (especially where martial arts are involved) and has a weak spot for dangerous women. She’s Creation’s wildest and worst gay aunt.

Side Note: Daia is partially deaf, due to an old and potent supernatural injury. She employs the use of what magic/technology she can to aid her, but relies as well on sign language and interpreters. She’s very used to it at this point.

Along the way, he played a role in liberating a group of orphaned children from the clutches of the Dowager, and now finds himself settling into the role of an adoptive dad to them, hanging up his metaphorical (and literal) axe and trying to live a gentler life. It’s not always easy. Violence and trauma etched in that deep doesn’t just smooth out perfectly over time. On top of that, he has impostor’s syndrome when it comes to his redemption by the Sun, and still feels uncomfortable thinking of himself as a peer to the other members of the Solar Host. Still, as long as his soul is on this side of Lethe, he is determined to fight against the Void- not because he considers himself antithesis to it, but because he has known it and survived it. And while some days it’s hard, other days it feels like, maybe, fighting against the void can be planting sunflowers for your children on a sunny spring afternoon.

Phoenix is of Western descent, very short, fat, and beefy, with warm brown skin and a round, open face.  He keeps his burgundy hair closely shaved, not fond of dealing with the mess of wavy curls it becomes when allowed to grow out. His eyes are dark brown, almost black, the outside of the iris rimmed with the faintest edge of golden yellow. His nose looks like it has been broken multiple times in the past, and never properly healed. Due to unfortunate wyld misadventures his tongue has been mutated to resemble and function like that of a frog’s, though this is only really apparent when he opens his mouth to use the damn thing. Frogs and toads are a definite motif for him in general- small, grumpy-looking, and round as they are.

Phoenix’s casual clothes tend to be simple, comfortable, loose, and in sharp contrast to his prickly combat garb. He enjoys floral patterns, and the color pink. He’s got a very ‘open hawaiian shirt and flip flops dad’ vibe, basically. He does not dress fancily unless pressed to for big occasions, and in those cases usually grudgingly follows the fashion direction of the one twisting his arm. When he’s on actual exalt business, he’s most frequently found wearing his armor; black jade full plate embellished with cruel-looking spikes, and occasionally a shaggy grey fur cloak made from the pelt of some hunting trophy. A horned skull helm, made from the skull of a nephwrack’s war-body, often completes this ensemble. The helmet is a minor artifact: when worn, it causes his eyes to glow balefully behind its sockets and makes his voice gravelly with deathly menace. He is reluctant to take it off unless he feels at ease in a situation.

Phoenix is somewhat bumbling and gruffly soft-spoken, with tendency to look more tired than he feels. Beneath this is a talent for strategic leadership and a determination that gets fiercer as the going gets tougher. On the battlefield, he is utterly terrifying when he needs to be, but would much prefer to be at home in his garden than on a battlefield these days.

His anima banner starts as burst of gold-and crimson fire that solidifies into the form of a fierce and predatory-looking phoenix, with aspects of a garda bird and a lammergeier both. Worldbuilding Monday!

Today we’re talking about magic. It’s fantasy; you gotta have magic.

Actually, no. It’s perfectly possible to write fantasy without explicit magic, but this is high fantasy, and then you really do need it.

So, what is magic?

In this particular universe, it’s a kind of energy that can theoretically do anything. If you figure out how, it can interact with any force, any element, any aspect of reality you can imagine, and a few you can’t. Unfortunately, figuring out how to make it do something new is all but impossible and definitely beyond human knowledge (at this point in time) and so they have to rely on the forms of magic that already exist.

Where does magic come from?

Living things. Any living things. From dragons through humans and dogs and flowers all the way down to bacteria. People don’t know this yet, though there are theories, but bacterial magic is actually the source of the “background field” of magic everything else lives in the context of.

Complex animals have a soul, which is a vital organ that specializes in producing magic. This is why more complex animals are comparatively more magical by body weight, and a big part of why they have better cognitive abilities, as magic helps a lot with thinking. The brain is the organ that requires the most magic.

Each species has evolved to produce slightly different flavours of magic, called ‘aurality’. Because humans were the ones to define the language, the human aurality has been called everything from True Magic through Pure Magicto just Magic, but it is just another aurality. It is true that the human aurality is a little more versatile than average, but this ties into our adaptability and tool use.

There is still only so much humans can do with their own magic, and so they learned to utilize other species’ magic.

Trees are the most important part of this. It differs between tree species, but many of them have adapted a defence against attack where their resin traps and stores foreign magic, freezing it into specific patterns as it hardens. This makes tree resin invaluable for storing magic from any kinds of species, and for creating complex spells you can fire off again and again without failing spectacularly 90% of the time. Farming the best of these trees for their resin is a large business, and amber is the most precious of all rare materials by a long shot.

A hardened piece of resin with a finished spell on it is called a harpiks. It sounds cool and also happens to be a fancy name for hardened resin in my own language :P

Now, what kinds of spells is it possible to make and store on these harpikses?

That depends entirely on which auralities you have access to, which depends on which animals are around.

It is technically possible to make spells that can turn one aurality into another, but these are incredibly difficult to make and can only be built into amber pieces, not your normal, run-of-the-mill harpiks, so they’re some of the most valuable items in the setting. Usually, you have to go straight to the source.

Human aurality is mostly known for being able to speed up healing in humans, and for being the most common power source for other spells. More nuanced application can result in a wide variety of medical applications, but that technology is currently in development. You can use it to power a wide array of rudimentary spells on its own (including demonic summoning, though you’ll want some help powering that), but usually it’s more practical to use spells more suited to that specific purpose.

You might want to use it in the equivalent of fingerprint scanners, chacking the tiny variations between people to make sure no one else can get into your apartment. Unless they store some of your magic on a small harpiks, of course.

One thing it can be used for that is deeply illegal is mind reading. This is illegal because in the process of unravelling someone’s mind, you also almost literally unravel their mind, killing whatever they used to be and often killing them literally. They’ll end up brain damaged at the very least, and you’re still not likely to get that much out of the tangle of information you end up with.

Goats are pretty much the only farm animal you get in this world. There might be a few others, but the vast majority are goats. They are relatively low on magic, and goat aurality has few uses beyond healing other goats. You get vets travelling around with goats that are perfectly useless for pretty much everything because they’ve been specifically bred to have more magic than normal, so that they can help heal injured goats.

Other creatures that have ended up as very useful for this are fireflies and seashells. Fireflies have the only aurality anyone has ever been able to use to make things glow, and all kinds of flashlights, lamps and lanterns that don’t burn are based on them. Seashells, like trees, can store spells in their shells. Pearls and mother-of-pearl (known as Pymi’s shroud in-universe for reasons I’m not getting into) can be used as inlays and additions on everything from jewelry to gun barrels to strenghten them against damage.

Drakes use their magic to achieve limited anti-gravity. Humans have not yet been able to adapt this to achieve flight, though there has been a lot of disasterous attempts, but the drakes themselves have becom extremely practical as long-distance messengers. They’re extremely fast fliers that take well to training. They’re also utterly adorable, but that has nothing to do with anything.

Dragons, on the other hand, are not adorable. For one thing they take anti-gravity to a whole other level. For another, they know everything. An old dragon can communicate with another from the other end of a continent, because both know everything that is happening at the other side. They can see the future, they know the past, and they can keep a metaphorical eye on you no matter where you are. Not a physical eye. Really old dragons usually don’t have eyes anymore. They don’t need them.

People haven’t really been able to use dragon aurality, since the dragons don’t feel like indulging them. There might have been a single incident where a human managed to get their hands on a converter into water dragon aurality, which might or might not be how weather mages can predict the weather, but as they are notoriously secretive, no one else knows for sure. They just know that paying them will result in a somewhat accurate weather forecast.

Demons are another matter altogether. They come from an entirely different plane of reality, where the laws of nature are subtly different and the background magical field is more so. A demon cannot survive long while exposed to the human plane’s air, though possessing someone and taking refuge in the relative sterility of their body helps against that, and a creature from the human plane cannot survive long on the demon one. Usually.

Exactly how things work on the demon plane is a story in itself, but demon magic is interesting. Demons are slightly more technologically advanced than humans, in the sense that they know more about how magic actually works and not in the sense that they can do more with it altogether. They have developed technology humans are in the process of skipping right past, because demons don’t have access to the super-practical tree resin that humans use for everything. There’s a reason tree sap is the one thing besides living souls (as a practical energy source) that most demonic deals are about.

Demonic aurality in itself is powerful, extremely corrosive to most life on the human plane, and is the only thing known to block a dragon’s sight. Dragons are not very happy about this fact, and would prefer if people stopped summoning demons altogether, but they can’t really do anything about it because the second a dragon gets close to a demon it goes entirely blind. Which is not fun, when you’re used to seeing everything.

Teaching Techniques with TED

Why change?

Textbook lessons don’t get students excited. If they do work diligently enough, it certainly can work, but they don’t have the same magic that a TED talk has. Evidenced by this is the fact that the newer Common Core education is starting to falter. The guidelines of the system promote tactics to score higher on standardized tests, rather than improve abilities to learn and educate oneself. Memorization and cramming are the two most useful skills in the student’s arsenal. Unfortunately, I don’t think this will change any time soon, but I can say that public speaking teachers should implement TED talks into their lessons, as they are able to spark curiosity needed to become invested and interested in the content that they are learning, and demonstrate the effective methods that speakers use in the real world. Specifically, I’ll be demonstrating why TED talks succeed and my personal successes with implementing information from TED talks into classwork, as evidence of their effectiveness.  

What is TED?

TED talks are, by in large, well known by American Students, and for good reason. When you pull out an old projector, hook up your laptop with those funky HDMI adaptors that never seem to work right, call on that tech savvy student to walk you through changing a “display window” or whatever he calls it, and the whole class seems to actually watch and pay attention for once. One of the big reasons why TED is so much better than your ordinary textbook lesson or handout, is that it is designed with entertainment in mind. According to TED’s own website, “TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics…” Except all of this is, for the most part, ancient history by now. That all changed in 2006 however, when TED decided to start publishing some of their meeting to YouTube, and their popularity exploded, reaching more than a million views in roughly 2 months. This made some higher ups in the nonprofit realize what was, a way to revolutionize their original mission of spreading ideas; they create entertaining videos focused around the YouTube platform, and make highly educational content freely accessible to teachers, students, and any other curious person.

Who am I?

In the past two months, I’ve done research on what helps people begin to learn and what enhances a learning experience. In Mark Rober’s TED The Super Mario Effect – Tricking Your Brain into Learning More, he notes the importance of not focusing on any failures made, and yet still adjusting for those failures, as to not make them again, people are able to learn much more effectively. This is one of the reasons that TED talks can be so appealing to a student. When a teacher hands their students a slip of paper that asks them to rewrite what they should be learning from the TED talks, they are effectively being exposed to the information three times: once by the speaker; once by writing the concepts down; and a third by proofreading what they’ve wrote. Additionally, they have nothing to lose, so students won’t be focused on the end grades, and much more focused on learning the content. This is far better than reading information from a textbook once, which even if done multiple times, doesn’t give the same effect as these videos. I personally, quite enjoy watching and learning from TED talks on my own time as well, and when I can, use them to get information on a relevant topic.  

Why does Common Core fail?

In New York, during the 2018 year, 5 years after Common core was implemented, failure rates went up more than 5%, causing an additional 13,000 students to flunk according to Hechinger Report author Jill Barshay. In the article, “Five years after Common Core, a mysterious spike in failure rate among NY high school students” She discusses an anomaly where for whatever reason, five years after Common Core was implemented, there was a significant drop in pass rates, that has been maintained since. It entirely might be coincidence, but this happens to be the classes that students have begun to receive a common core education from freshman to senior year. Speaking from personal experience, freshman year is potentially the most critical year in high school, when one has to learn important critical thinking skills necessary to make it through their high school career. Polikoff, from USC, realizes this and makes the note that already high performing students were able to cope with the changes, but lower performing students couldn’t properly adjust and were largely left behind.

Why do TED talks work?

Public speaking is not an easy task. I would know, I’ve got to figure out how to learn and present information on a regular basis for class, as do most students today. I was so drawn to TED talks for information on how to make my own presentations amazing, because they, to me, clearly knew how to make an effective and awesome presentation, and their 16.1 million subscribers on YouTube would likely agree, as of February 16, 2020. Forbes magazine was able to pick up on some of the reasons as to why these have such success in the article “Here’s Why TED and TEDx are So Incredibly Appealing”. Mark Fidelman, the Forbes writer, attributes this to the fact that TED’s organizers continually make the effort to select interesting topics, interesting speakers, and interesting themes to present on their digital platforms like YouTube. It is because of these interesting speakers that can draw in students and other curious people. Interesting people are able to captivate audiences and hold their attention long enough to teach them something new, or cement something they have already been exposed to. On the other hand, very few people will willingly sit through an educational lecture on even the most interesting of topics if the speaker isn’t motivated or has a hard time conveying their excitement and interest in the topic. Because of TED’s organizers, they ensure that both of those criteria are met. This is why, if the content is applicable to what needs to be learned, a teacher could very much look at implementing a TED talk into their lessons, as a reliable way to keep students engaged in what needs to be learned.

Using TED talks effectively myself.

When I was faced with a public speaking presentation, I wanted to make sure that the people I barely knew would be at least somewhat interested in the information I was presenting, as I felt like the plights of the Hong Kong protesters is something that goes largely unnoticed now, but there are still injustices being committed daily. When practicing, I knew that there was something wrong with how I was presenting, and after sitting down, hands ready to scrawl more half-baked ideas onto my planner, I remembered a presentation by Julian Treasure, titled “How to speak so that people want to listen”. This TED talk was only memorable to me because Mr. Treasure, in his presentation, demonstrated very effectively exactly what he was trying to teach in his speech, throughout his speech. Sure, he gave examples of what not to do on each particular subject, but in the majority of his presentation, he used the concepts he was covering to great effect, and something about the entire presentation just clicked for me. I went ahead and despite my limited experience with public speaking, attempted to apply at least one of his concepts well into how I was delivering this presentation. Out of register, timbre, prosody, pace, pitch, and volume, I thought my prosody was something I could certainly work towards. I made sure to end more of my sentences definitively and give the audience some time to process my bombardment of information between my major talking points.  The professor allowed anonymous comments from students, and two of note were ones praising my “explaining and involving of audience,” and how the “connection between Black Lives Matter and Hong Kong made me interested”. To me, that was music to my ears, because it means I had succeeded in presenting and conveying my enthusiasm to the audience in a similar way that those TED talks were able to keep me interested on bettering my speech. There are a plethora of TED talks that focus specifically on speeches and speaking, so if you do need to teach these concepts to someone, I would highly recommend looking into TED talks as an option both to cover material needed, as well as demonstrations of how to be in front of a crowd and deliver a phenomenal speech.

Conclusion

The TED platform is used to an extent in education, in fact its how I was first exposed to TED talks, but I feel as if there is significant room for improvement. The systems in place today are flawed and are struggling to compete with the more modern methods of spreading ideas and education. I believe that with this increase in technology necessitates at the very least, conversion towards more usage of that technology in education, and the TED platform has a huge variety of content that is covered in an effective manner by people who know how to deliver great speeches, to keep students engaged and learning. Thus, it only seems natural that more teachers implement TED talks into their lessons, promoting education and learning rather than memorization and cramming.
