WHAT ARE THREADS AND WHAT ALL KIND OF INSTRUMENTS ARE USED TO MEASURE THEM?
What are the threads?
Thread gauges are used to measure and check the accuracy of the threads by finding out their pitch and depth along with their tolerances. Now the question is what is a thread? Well, in the mechanical world, the thread is a form of the ridge which is cylindrical and helical in structure. Thread ridges have distance between them and also between two ridges there is a gap which has a depth of its own. Through these ridges, only one part can connect to another, and to check the correctness of these threads only thread gauges and other screw pitch measuring instruments are used.
Threads are important because they fix a part to another on a temporary basis and also helps in worm motion of transit when two threaded pieces are joined together temporarily.
One can find two types of threads in production pieces:
External thread: external thread is found on screws and shafts, and in these, the ridges are present on the outer side. For measuring these threads, thread ring gages are used.
Internal thread: internal thread is found in the bolts and nuts, and the ridges of the thread are found on the inside of the hollow of the piece. For measuring these threads, thread plug gauges are used.
Types of thread measuring gauges
In the mass production industry, it is very important to use properly measured and corrected parts and elements like screws, bolts, and nuts. This is the reason why measuring and checking instruments are also highly sophisticated and precise. Some of the thread measuring instruments are:
Thread plug gauges: thread plug gauges are basically the instruments to measure the pitch of the internal threads of the nuts. One can find both go-no go gauges to check the correctness of the pieces.
Thread ring gauges: thread ring gauges are measurement instruments for measuring the pitch diameter and depth of the external threads of screws and pins. They also come in go-no go gauges so as to check the correctness of smaller pieces.
Thread micrometers: these are small instruments which are specially designed to measure both external and internal threads.
Three wire gauges: these thread gauges use three wires to measure the thread. This instrument works in alignment with three holders which hold the wires in place while measuring the thread.
Measuring wire: this is a wire which is specially made to measure external thread by placing it in the thread and then use a micrometer to know the measurement.
Tri roll gauging comparator: in these three rolls of thread are used and a digital display to know the measurement.
Helicoil gauges: it is used to measure the screw thread and is mostly used in the automobile industry.
There are several factors that affect the measurement of the thread like major diameter that is the outer length of the thread and pitch which denotes the gap between the two crests of the thread. According to uses and standards one can find different threads like metric thread, screw thread, plug thread, and on the basis of standards there are ASME, UNF, UNEF, UNC thread gages.

Know the intricacies of choosing metric thread gauges
A person new to the world of tapping and threading might be flabbergasted by the myriad of gauging equipment that lay in front of him. In order to understand the world of metrology, one needs to grasp the concept of metric thread gauges and its intricacies. So, no need to panic as yet. This article provides a deeper insight into the types of gauges and their areas of application.
1. ACME thread gauges:
ACMEs find primary application in thin wall areas. They are durable and strong in nature. In areas of the coarse pitch, ACME thread gauges find significant use quite similar to those used in oil field equipment.
2. UN thread gages:
Invariable or uniform thread series having a consistent bore per inch are measured using UN gauges. The primary function of gauges is to attain impeccable accuracy, and the UN series justifies this cause. This lineup has eight distinct varieties starting from the 4TPI and extending up to the 32 TPI mark. When this fixed UN series receives complementation from C, F, or EF segments, it gives rise to the following variants:
UNF – Unified National Fine Series UNC – Unifies National Coarse Series UNS – Unified National Special UNEF thread gauges – Unifies National Extra Fine Series
3. Trapezoidal Thread gauges:
Trapezoidal gauges find major application in heavy machinery industries. They are mainly used for translational motion. These gauges aim to provide accurate measurements of taps as well as any damage due to overuse.
How to choose your thread gauge?
Now, since you have received some knowledge on the types of thread gauges, it is important to take a look at the specifics of choosing a thread gauge.
The trivial condition of buying a gauge is to perform a close check of a nation’s threading standards. For example, US specifies its thread gauge standard as ASME/ANSI B1.2 for UN screw threads while ANSI B1.16 M for metric thread gauges. Also, reference temperature should remain consistent around the 68 F mark so as to ensure the accuracy of inspection.
So, one should keep in mind the following points before opting for any type of screw gauges.
The gauge should support special and standard tolerance levels.
Complete inspection certificates should be available on demand.
The minimum strength of a gauge should exceed the standard limits by a considerable amount.
UNEF thread gauges of the UN thread gauge and similar others must provide true dimensions.
Double surface gauges are necessary so as to allow ample space for markings when necessary.
Greater resistibility against wear and tear.
ISO 9001 certification should be available on all gauges.
One should keep in mind that a thread head is prone to wear and tear with overuse. This may hamper accurate measurements leading to a quality loss. So, one must check a gauge for any wear and tear or zero error so as to prevent any unprecedented damage.
So, keeping a clear knowledge of threads and gauges is essential in order to garner accurate measurements. Metric thread gauges should pass the above points to ensure safety and security of machines at work.

In this article, we will discuss how to select the appropriate metric tap for your undertaking.
Determine Thread Pitch and Size
The first step in selecting the proper metric tap for your endeavour is to determine the required thread pitch and diameter. This information can be discovered in your project's engineering drawings or specifications. Be careful to accurately measure the pitch and diameter, as selecting the incorrect measurement can result in thread damage or a poor fit.
Select the Appropriate Tap Type
After determining the thread pitch and diameter, you must select the appropriate tap type for your endeavour. Straight fluted taps and spiral fluted taps are the two most common varieties of metric taps. The most common form of tap, straight fluted taps are excellent for cutting threads in flexible materials like aluminium, brass, and plastic. Additionally, they are appropriate for use in blind openings, where the tap cannot be inserted the entire length of the hole.
For severing threads in denser materials such as steel and stainless steel, spiral fluted taps are designed. They feature a spiral design that reduces the amount of torque necessary to sever threads, making them simpler to use.
Consider the Tap's Material
The material of the tap is also an important factor to consider when selecting the ideal metric tap for a given application. Most metric tap are manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS), a material that is durable and resistant to high temperatures. However, some taps, such as those made of cobalt or carbide, may be better suited for severing threads in denser materials.
Select the Appropriate Tap Finish
The finish of the tap is also an important factor to consider when selecting the ideal metric tap for a given application. The majority of taps have a vibrant finish, which is ideal for threading delicate materials. Some screws, however, have a black oxide finish that reduces friction and increases tool life when cutting threads in denser materials.
Consider the Tap's Length
The length of the tap is also an important factor to consider when selecting the ideal metric tap for a given undertaking. When severing threads in a blind hole, you'll need a tool that is shorter than the hole's depth. To cut threads in a through hole, you will need an implement that is long enough to traverse the entire length of the hole.

Do Not Forget To Check The Returns Policy Of Your Thread Gauge Manufacturer
When you are ordering your UNF thread gages or your UNC thread gages you hope to receive the finest quality thread gages and that is what your manufacturer also promises. They hopefully strive to give you the finest quality thread gages. However, due to various reasons the thread gauges delivered may fall short of your expectations. It could prove to be a highly frustrating experience when the quality of the thread gauges you order is not up to the standard.
What do you do with the poor quality or faulty thread gages that are delivered to you? In order to stay protected against such issues you need to make certain that you check the returns and exchanges policy of your UNC thread gages manufacturer. Does the company you are selecting have a clear and straightforward returns and exchange policy. If you do not find adequate information about the returns and exchange policy or if something is not clear to you then you must first have things clarified before placing the order. There is no point trying to clarify your doubts after placing the order because it is not going to change anything. If you take the time to clarify things before you placed the order, you would have the chance of at least staying away from such a manufacturer and protect yourself from unnecessary issues.

NPT Thread Gauge: 101 Guide
Pipes usually have threads like many other mechanical objects. You might have to deal with internal or external threads in a pipe when you are working on your own. Usually, these pipes are used for the transportation of essential resources such as oil and gas. Since the usage of pipes is critical to the well-being of the world at large, it is also essential to maintain them. Corrosion, leakage and other problems can come in the way of efficient transportation of fluids. This is there the role of precision tools such as the NPT thread gauge comes in.
What is the NPT Thread Gauge?
There are several types of thread gauges used for variety of functions and based on varying standards as well. NPT or National Pipe Thread is a common tool which is used for dealing with pipes. Canada, USA and Britain all use the NPT thread gauge for dealing with the industrial pipes which transport oil and gas.
On the other hand, for the transportation of the fuels, a slight variation of pipe threads is used called the NPTF (National Pipe Thread Fuel). Although the two of these are similar in most ways, NPT thread gauge does not need the sealants. This is due to the fact that the sealant is automatically processed within the NPT thread gauges.
Different Types of NPT Thread Gauge
Just like the other thread gauges, there are many types of the NTP thread gauge too. The ring gauges of the NTP thread gauge are used for measuring tolerance level as usual. However, the plug gauges are used for checking internal threads. Both of these types cover the external and internal threads of pipes.
You can further divide the thread gauges that fall under the NTP:
NPT L1 Taper Pipe Ring:
This is the pipe ring gauge which is used for measuring the pitch of external pipes and plays an important role in setting up pipes. Moreover, they also perform the essential task of determining the functional size of pipes. They are also used when it comes to hand-tight engagement of the pipes. All of these steps play an important role in transportation of fluids.
NPT L2 Taper Pipe Ring:
The other type which is also a necessary part of the NPT gauge thread is the L2. This taper pipe ring is used for more complex performance such as checking for the Dryseal as well as determining aeronautical tolerance of the pipe.
NPT thread gauge is one of the tools which cannot be overlooked. You also have to be careful about purchasing the right type of the thread gauges so that you get long lasting and satisfactory performance.
The difference between other thread gauges and NPT thread gauge can be judged by the fact that their appliance is completely different from the rest. They are made to adhere to particular tasks and so the tools are specific to the appliance. Furthermore, they are not complex to purchase due to their wide availability in the market.

UNIFIED THREAD TAPS STANDARD
The Unified Thread Standard (UTS) is a standard thread form and series with designations, tolerances and allowance for screw threads commonly used in the United States and Canada. It is the basic standard for bolts, nuts, and a lot of other threaded fasteners used in these countries. It has the same 60° profile as the ISO metric screw thread, but the quality dimensions of each UTS thread were selected as an inch fraction rather than a millimeter value. The UTS is presently run by ASME/ANSI in the United States.
The basic profile of all UTS thread taps is the same as that of all ISO metric screw threads. Only the generally used worth’s Dmaj and P varies between the standards.
Its thread is distinct by its basic diameter Damn and its pitch, P. It has a symmetric shaped thread. The pitch is far between thread peaks. UTS threads do not use the pitch parameter; what is used is a parameter known as threads per inch (TPI).
The minor diameter Dmin and efficient pitch diameter Dp are gotten from the major diameter and pitch.
The standard designation for a UTS thread is a number showing the basic diameter of the thread, then the pitch measured in threads per inch. For diameters smaller than 1⁄4 inch, the diameter is shown by an integer number which is defined in the standard. Another diameter gives inch figure.
This number pair is voluntarily followed by the letters UNC thread gages, UNF or UNEF (Unified National) if the diameter-pitch combo is from the rough, fine, or extra-fine series. It might also be followed by a tolerance class.
For lots of years, nonstandard nuts and bolts have been used. Fasteners are easier to find and inexpensive. After decades, the fastener is now referred to as standard fine thread. Technically, incorrect size is widely accepted and is now established as a brand. In other words, the standard has lack efficient enforcement for a long period of time to give generic trademarks.
The number of machine screws included more odd numbers. Standardization in the late 19the and early part of the 20th century diminished in sizes significantly. Now it is less to see machine screws bigger than 14 inches, or odd numbers thank 1, 3and 5 inches accessible. Even though14 and 16 inches are still available, are bot the common sizes.
UN threads taps are scarcely used for bolts, but rather on nuts, tapped holes, and threaded ODs. Because of this UNC thread gages, taps are readily available. Most UNS threads taps have more threads per inch than the equivalent UNF thread gages or UNEF standard. This means they happen to be the strongest available thread. Because of this they are often used in applications where high stresses are met with, such as machine tool beams or automotive beams.
Gauging Edit
A screw thread gauging system is a combination of a list of screw thread features that must be checked to have dimensional acceptability of the screw thread on the threaded product and gauge which will definitely be used during the inspection of the features/ characteristics.
Presently this gauging for UTS is controlled by ASME/ANSI B1.2-1983 Gauges and Gauging for Unified Inch Screw Threads
This Standard gives important stipulations and dimensions for the gages used on Unified inch screw threads UN [unified] and UNR [external threads only] thread form, and covers the stipulations and dimensions for the thread gauges and measuring devices.

UNC Thread Gages
The UNC thread gages values can actually be made to be equivalent to the UNF values just in case if the absence of the UNF gage. The UNF value of the UNC 4 to 40 is UNF can be said to be equivalent to 4 to 48. In the same vein, it is also possible to find UNF equivalents in values of UNC and a perfect example can be shown as a UNF value which is of 8 to 36 would have its UNC equivalents as 8 to 32.
The Measurement Of UNC Thread Gages
When measuring a thread, especially with the UNC, the diameter is being measured mainly at the outside of the thread but many manufacturers do not mind doing the exact opposite as some like to refer to the pitch diameter. The pitch diameter is gotten by measuring the inside of the thread. Compared to specifications in metric screws, metric screws specifications are quite simpler, or even a lot more. Simpler to specify and identify as they can easily be specified by Maa x bb is specified as the pitch's diameter. The pitch's diameter is measured in millimeters. bb, on the other hand, is used to specify the pitch itself. The pitch can be described as the distance between threads, and this distance is measured in millimeters. One perfect way to illustrate this little explanation, let's say we are given a specification of M5.5 x 1.5. This means that the thread has a diameter 5.5mm and a pitch of 1.5mm.
UNC thread gages uses flats ends and the threads are always at 60 degrees. UNF the UNC brother also uses the same specifications as UNF uses flat ends with the metric threads at 60 degrees too. Unlike this tow, there are threads and thread gages which actually do not use these specifications and they are the Whitworth threads. The Whitworth thread uses 55 degrees and not flat ends like UNC but rounded ends. The UNC gage numbers are used for diameters less than 1/4" inch. This also applies to so many more gages also. There are many standard sizes recognized all around the world, this notwithstanding, many manufacturers have still created their own sizes which now are seen as exceptions or non-standard Sizes.
The unified national coarse thread gage as earlier said has an angle of 60 degrees. It features a standard tolerance of about ring 2a and a plug 2b. It also features an internal thread tolerance of 1B, 2B, and 3B. The external thread tolerance is also specified and these specifications are 1A、2A、3A. There is hardly any UNC Thread gages which calibration is faulty so it is one you can trust. One can also get accreditation to do long form calibration as all that is needed is just to send a professional third party to the testing lab. This would actually incurs extra fee.

More about UNF and UNEF threads
Precision in any experiment is very important. Well, that's what our practical teacher used to tell us in school. A minute change in the results would lead to a different conclusion. Different instruments are used to measure different things such as the vernier calliper is used to measure the diameter of a bob or the depth of measuring cylinder, with the help of convex mirror we can find out the focal length. Similarly, a screw gauge (used for measuring the diameter of a thin wire or thickness of metal sheet) is used for obtaining more precise calculations.
There are also some instruments which measure the thread of a screw. This instrument is known as thread gauge. Thread gage is used to measure and verify pitch, thread size, and related parameters and is a dimensional instrument. A thread gauge checks the correctness of the thread which includes the pitch diameter (in terms of TPI which is threads per inch). This device saves time as the users do not need to calculate the thread pitch of the threaded item.
We can, however classify the threads based on its shape and pitch. The designation of threads can be UNC, UNEF, UNF, ANPT, NPTF, BSPP, BSPT, NPSF, UN, M/MJ (metric), ACME and buttress. However, the types of thread gauges can be that of ring, measuring wire, tri-roll comparator, 3-wire and screw thread insert gauges.
However, there are two Unified series that are used, one is the UN and the other is UNR. Let's see what UNF and UNEF thread gauges are.
UNF thread gages:
UNF is basically used for unified fine pitch threads. It has thread angle of sixty degrees and one can use them mostly as imperial threads. UNF is exactly the same as the old SAE (Standard American Engineer) which existed before the threads were united. Fasteners of size 1'' - 14 are referred to as "UNF" thread. This size has been accepted universally. 5/16 and 3/8 UNF are both 24 TPI however 1/4 UNF is 28 TPI. Fine threads are being used in applications where thin walls are used and which require high tensile strength. The TPI (distance between threads) in gauges are majorly based on the sizes available in UNF. So if the range of a fastener is between 8 to 36, then we can classify it as Unified Fine(UNF). UNJF is an extension of UNF with external thread controlled root radius.
UNEF thread gages:
UNEF thread is used when the length of engagement is smaller than the fine thread series. UNEF is the same as UNF but the only difference is that of the number of threads per inch as each fastener will now have a greater number of threads. Any application which requires the use of fine threads uses UNEF thread gauge. It has a flank angle of 60 degrees which is used for special purposes and it is has overridden the UN fixed designation.
We can get UNF and UNEF fasteners only from the suppliers who supply the fasteners to industries.

Distinguishing between UNC thread gauges and UNF gauges – a brief know how
There are many who get confused between UNC thread gauges and UNF gauges. But you can’t blame them as there are some elements of confusion. The purpose of this post is to highlight the basic differences between them and eradicate those confusions. So read on!
Differences - UNC thread gauges and UNF gauges:
According to American standards for nuts and bolts, UNC implies Unified Course thread series. And UNF denotes Unified Fine Thread series. Those who are into this threading scheme of things have stated that it one major difference between these 2 is their TPI or threads per inch.
Below is a brief example of thread counts based on different widths-
For width being 10 inches- TPI for National course is 24 inches whereas TPI for National fine will be 32 inches.
If Width is 12 inches- threads per inch for UNC and UNF will be 24 and 28 inches respectively.
For ¼ TPI for course and fine thread series will measure 20 and 28 inches consecutively.
In case of 5/16- TPI for course and fine is 16 inches and 24 inches.
And if width is said to be 7/16- threads per inch for National course and National fine will be 14 inches and 20 inches
Exact measurements of its TPI can be carried out using top-quality UNC thread gauges and UNF thread measuring contraptions. These measurements matter greatly when carrying out threading tasks, more so professional heavy machine operations. And so usage of such thread measuring gauging instruments is highly pivotal.
Both hold importance in their own way:
Along with UNC and UNF TPI differences, both serve equal importance in threading operations.
UNC thread gauges are more common in employment as course threading series happen to the general amongst the 2. This thread series allows for deeper fit. Along with that, it is also more in terms of versatility.
Another reason for course threading series and UNC thread gauges being widespread is its ability to tackle plating and manufacturing better.
On the other side of the coin, the usage of UNF thread gauges and fine threading series also has its fair share of importance. These threads are deeper and that make it adequate for load carriage capacity. The fitting is also very specific owing to high tolerance and finer tension tuning.
UNF thread gauges and finer threading series is more used in cases where high safety is needed or where loosening due to shocks and shocks are prevalent.
These are some of the basic differences between these 2 gauge tools and threading series.
Some aspects to check when buying either of the 2 gauging tools:
Check the quality of the material used for making it. Options such as HSS or quality steel-O6 and 8620 are effective as they are highly durable and very stable.
Check if they are certified as per manufacturing standards.
Check the class and apt size of gauging tools possibly with the company who you look to purchase from.
Hopefully, these differences between UNC thread gages and UNF gauges will prove beneficial for your purchases in the future!
