Thread inspection - What should you know?
If you are manufacturing or fabricating machine parts that include threaded components you will need to make sure that your quality control checklist includes thread inspection as one of the top test items. Whether it is a nut and bolt or any other threaded component, highest level of accuracy needs to be maintained. You will need to adhere to the specifications document to the last details. You cannot deliver to approximate values but to exact specifications.
Before sending out the products that are manufactured in your unit, it is essential that the parts you have manufactured are subjected to stringent quality control tests. You will need to make use of metric thread gauges or UN thread gauges that are still in good condition to check the accuracy of the thread.
Very often the purpose of testing is totally forgotten and the test process is handled very mechanically using worn out UN thread gauges. What is the use of running such a test process if it is not going to establish whether the threading in the components manufactured meets the required specifications or not? Always make sure that the thread gauges are in top-notch conditions.
In order to get the best value for your money, always go for the best quality gauges. Poor quality gauges will not only be manufactured to meet the expected standards but it will also not be able to withstand the wear and tear.
The technician using the thread gauges should be adequately trained in the testing process and on how to handle the thread gauges without damaging the gauge. For example, if the manufactured component is not accurate and slightly bigger than the standard size the untrained person will try to force the threaded part into the tool and thereby damaging the thread. It will in turn affect the accuracy rate of the gauge after a few such attempts. The thread gauge should therefore be handled by someone with at least basic knowledge on the testing process.
It is also equally important in storing the test equipment in the right conditions. It should not be exposed to moisture but stored in dry places. Moreover, while buying your thread gauges, you should go only for the best quality gauges. If you order from a reputed supplier of gauges, you need not have to worry about the quality.
At times you may need to go for custom thread gauges. Not all suppliers are cable of supplying you with custom gauges. You need to screen carefully to identify dependable custom thread gauge supplier. While placing your order, you will need to make sure that you are giving them accurate requirements. You cannot send them approximate specifications but the exact measurements. When you place orders for custom thread gauge, you will not be able to get an exchange or return your tool if something goes wrong unless the mistake is committed by your supplier and you can prove that. You are required to be extra cautious here.

Know the intricacies of choosing metric thread gauges
A person new to the world of tapping and threading might be flabbergasted by the myriad of gauging equipment that lay in front of him. In order to understand the world of metrology, one needs to grasp the concept of metric thread gauges and its intricacies. So, no need to panic as yet. This article provides a deeper insight into the types of gauges and their areas of application.
1. ACME thread gauges:
ACMEs find primary application in thin wall areas. They are durable and strong in nature. In areas of the coarse pitch, ACME thread gauges find significant use quite similar to those used in oil field equipment.
2. UN thread gages:
Invariable or uniform thread series having a consistent bore per inch are measured using UN gauges. The primary function of gauges is to attain impeccable accuracy, and the UN series justifies this cause. This lineup has eight distinct varieties starting from the 4TPI and extending up to the 32 TPI mark. When this fixed UN series receives complementation from C, F, or EF segments, it gives rise to the following variants:
UNF – Unified National Fine Series UNC – Unifies National Coarse Series UNS – Unified National Special UNEF thread gauges – Unifies National Extra Fine Series
3. Trapezoidal Thread gauges:
Trapezoidal gauges find major application in heavy machinery industries. They are mainly used for translational motion. These gauges aim to provide accurate measurements of taps as well as any damage due to overuse.
How to choose your thread gauge?
Now, since you have received some knowledge on the types of thread gauges, it is important to take a look at the specifics of choosing a thread gauge.
The trivial condition of buying a gauge is to perform a close check of a nation’s threading standards. For example, US specifies its thread gauge standard as ASME/ANSI B1.2 for UN screw threads while ANSI B1.16 M for metric thread gauges. Also, reference temperature should remain consistent around the 68 F mark so as to ensure the accuracy of inspection.
So, one should keep in mind the following points before opting for any type of screw gauges.
The gauge should support special and standard tolerance levels.
Complete inspection certificates should be available on demand.
The minimum strength of a gauge should exceed the standard limits by a considerable amount.
UNEF thread gauges of the UN thread gauge and similar others must provide true dimensions.
Double surface gauges are necessary so as to allow ample space for markings when necessary.
Greater resistibility against wear and tear.
ISO 9001 certification should be available on all gauges.
One should keep in mind that a thread head is prone to wear and tear with overuse. This may hamper accurate measurements leading to a quality loss. So, one must check a gauge for any wear and tear or zero error so as to prevent any unprecedented damage.
So, keeping a clear knowledge of threads and gauges is essential in order to garner accurate measurements. Metric thread gauges should pass the above points to ensure safety and security of machines at work.

Distinguishing between UNC thread gauges and UNF gauges – a brief know how
There are many who get confused between UNC thread gauges and UNF gauges. But you can’t blame them as there are some elements of confusion. The purpose of this post is to highlight the basic differences between them and eradicate those confusions. So read on!
Differences - UNC thread gauges and UNF gauges:
According to American standards for nuts and bolts, UNC implies Unified Course thread series. And UNF denotes Unified Fine Thread series. Those who are into this threading scheme of things have stated that it one major difference between these 2 is their TPI or threads per inch.
Below is a brief example of thread counts based on different widths-
For width being 10 inches- TPI for National course is 24 inches whereas TPI for National fine will be 32 inches.
If Width is 12 inches- threads per inch for UNC and UNF will be 24 and 28 inches respectively.
For ¼ TPI for course and fine thread series will measure 20 and 28 inches consecutively.
In case of 5/16- TPI for course and fine is 16 inches and 24 inches.
And if width is said to be 7/16- threads per inch for National course and National fine will be 14 inches and 20 inches
Exact measurements of its TPI can be carried out using top-quality UNC thread gauges and UNF thread measuring contraptions. These measurements matter greatly when carrying out threading tasks, more so professional heavy machine operations. And so usage of such thread measuring gauging instruments is highly pivotal.
Both hold importance in their own way:
Along with UNC and UNF TPI differences, both serve equal importance in threading operations.
UNC thread gauges are more common in employment as course threading series happen to the general amongst the 2. This thread series allows for deeper fit. Along with that, it is also more in terms of versatility.
Another reason for course threading series and UNC thread gauges being widespread is its ability to tackle plating and manufacturing better.
On the other side of the coin, the usage of UNF thread gauges and fine threading series also has its fair share of importance. These threads are deeper and that make it adequate for load carriage capacity. The fitting is also very specific owing to high tolerance and finer tension tuning.
UNF thread gauges and finer threading series is more used in cases where high safety is needed or where loosening due to shocks and shocks are prevalent.
These are some of the basic differences between these 2 gauge tools and threading series.
Some aspects to check when buying either of the 2 gauging tools:
Check the quality of the material used for making it. Options such as HSS or quality steel-O6 and 8620 are effective as they are highly durable and very stable.
Check if they are certified as per manufacturing standards.
Check the class and apt size of gauging tools possibly with the company who you look to purchase from.
Hopefully, these differences between UNC thread gages and UNF gauges will prove beneficial for your purchases in the future!

Explaining trapezoidal thread taps and gauge used for thread construction!
A trapezoidal thread form comprises of a trapezoidal outline and is known as screw thread profiles. These threads are usually seen employed for power screws or lead screws in another name. More often they are located in sites where massive loads are needed mostly like the lead screw of a metal lathe. Now for those who are working with this thread pattern and need assistance, the main instrument they have to own are trapezoidal thread taps. Plus they also have to possess a trapezoidal thread measuring unit for impeccable thread formation.
The most common mistake which most people tyro threaders seem to make is confuse a trapezoidal thread form with an ACME thread form. Not to blame them, both these thread forms are pretty similar. In fact, the difference is only by virtue of 1 degree of measurement.
That’s correct, where an ACME thread form developed way back in 1984 is measured to be at 29 degrees, a trapezoidal thread pattern when measured creates threads angled at 30 degrees. However, the ACME thread pattern is more preferred amongst threading works.
That doesn’t mean that the trapezoidal thread pattern usage has gone one of existence. A number of workers still need threads to be created at 30-degree angle and for that they make use of quality, sturdy and production standard met trapezoidal thread taps.
What are trapezoidal thread taps?
Taking into account that you already are aware of what a tap is, trapezoidal thread taps threading tools which are employed to create or reshape the internal threads of a metal component.
• By shape they are cylindrical and on its body one can distinctly find thread outlines aligned at 30-degree measurements.
• Trapezoidal taps are quite sturdy by nature and have the ability to withstand high levels of pressure and wear and tear.
• These thread taps are prepared with quality metals such as HSS or HSS-E materials
• These metric trapezoidal taps are mostly bright and do not have any coating over it.
They are available in an array of sizes and specs:
These threading taps are available in both individual pieces or in sets. Though it is preferable to purchase in sets! Some of the highly repute suppliers functioning online will give away such trapezoidal taps in these specs:
Tr 8x1.5 tap
Tr 20x4 tap
Tr 32x6 tap
Tr 46x8 tap
Tr 10x2 tap
Tr 22x5 tap
Tr 36x6 tap
Tr 48x8 tap
Tr 12x3 tap
Tr 24x5 tap
Tr 38x7 tap
Tr 50x8 tap
Tr 14x3 tap
Tr 26x5 tap
Tr 40x7 tap
Tr 52x8 tap
Tr 16x4 tap
Tr 28x1.5 tap
Tr 42x7 tap
Tr 18x4 tap
Tr 30x6 tap
Tr 44x7 tap
Another must have instrument with this threading tool:
As stated in the first stanza, along with a tap you must have a measuring tool for accurate threading tasks. These trapezoidal thread gauges, in fact, serves higher importance in the threading task as compared to a tap. The rudiment of a threading job is impeccable measurement. Without it the desired to accomplish impeccability will remain a distant dream. As small as a 0.5 degree can result in a thread being flawless and a thread this is almost perfect!
Trapezoidal thread gauges also come in various sizes and so finding one as per the specs of your tap will not be difficult.
Ending statement:
Check in a reputed website who manufactures as well as supplies trapezoidal thread taps and gauges. You will find plenty, but a couple of tips in finding good ones is checking whether their offered products are tested pre-dispatch or not and also whether they have clients in more than one country. If affirmative, you have your purchasing source, if negative, then skip over to the next one and again check with these aspects.

Stuff you didn’t know about thread gauges and screwing!
There’s something mysterious about thread gauges, eh? Well, no. Not for me at least. There’s nothing interesting about them at all. All that there is to these machine-made mass-produced pieces of engineering is utility. And that is exactly what I will provide you with enlightenment – gauge nirvana! Why? Because you might not even know how many ways they help you out in your daily life.
Everything we do, everything we are and everything we can ever be depends on these thread gauges. How come? Well they’re all around you. You’re more dependent on them than you ever thought you were. And once you’re through with this, you’re most likely to admire the innocent simplicity of these minute pieces of engineered tools.
Thread gauges around you:
Ask your plumber if he knows what these are all about and you’re more likely to get nearly nothing out of it. But just think of it this way – every screw you see around has something to do with these gauges. How?
Just look at a screw; you’ll easily see some grooves around and you know how they work too. They are what make a screw simply ‘screw’ anything that can be screwed. And this is for a fact. But just think of how they’re made in the first place.
That is exactly where metric thread gauges and other common variants come in. These are what measure the screw with its signature grooves. Try imagining what you would’ve done without screwing! I won’t even think about it.
Metric Thread Gauges?!
Dropping a serious name out of nowhere doesn’t help much, so explaining it is necessary. These are the most commonly used gauges in the world. And every screw you find around you is a product of these gauges.
And ‘product’ is the perfect word for it. Think of it this way – having just a screw won’t do. There must be something which it can be screwed into. So, there are two types of grooves or rather threads which are required.
Coming back to the ‘production’ part of it all – these two types of gages have proportionally opposite threads. They are fundamentally and technically known as the male and female gauges. And they screw each other as per their threads.
Just for the sake of it – engineering is not a boring topic and should not be boring at all to even the least brainy people out there. I rather find it tangentially amusing sometimes.
Now coming to metric thread gauges – there are specifications to it. Obviously, to make sure that the male part can screw into the female part, they need to be of the right measure. This is where these gauges help out in.
HSS steel is the preferred material for making these gauges; however, there are other industry grade metric thread gauges which are even stronger.
They come in many sizes. And each size is based on specific formulae, so these gauges can groove and screw the way they’re supposed to. Sizes are determined by a standardized ‘M’ designation since 1947. So a M6 screwing will produce a 6 mm groove. And, as you read before, there are many sizes to these gauges.
Certified Hardness:
Now, anything which is uncertified has no value in engineering, even when it comes to screwing. The best metric thread gauges with guaranteed screwing are those which are ISO certified. An example just for you – ISP 68-1 applies to all ‘M’ designated gauges for screwing. Capiche?
For last word – anything and everything here is related to engineering and engineering only! My explanations are only applicable only on thread gauges.
Have a nice screw!

The thread gauges have their own place in the manufacturing industry
The use of machinery has assumed great importance after the Industrial Revolution. Machines started replacing the Man at every opportunity. The greatest advantage of a machine doing things is that it saves time. At the same time, you get uniformity and a greater degree of accuracy as well. However, a machine is a machine. It has to go through quality checks as well. The machines have thousands of individual parts. Each part has to function in cohesion with the others. One ill-fitting screw can spell disaster. You can never imagine the extent of damage it can cause. Therefore, every screw, nut, or the smallest devices should undergo quality checks for determining their tolerance levels and utility factors. The thread gauges are the perfect instrument for measuring the tolerance factors in the threaded instruments.
The internal threads:
Threads can be of two types, the external ones, and the internal types. You require both these types of threads in an implement. The pipes that the people use for plumbing purposes in the households have both the internal threads as well as the external threads depending on their usage.
The external threads:
The screws, taps, etc are examples of externally threaded instruments. They have as much place in the industry as much as the internally threaded instruments have. In fact, both these tools have to complement each other and co-exist for the proper functioning of the machine.
The gauges:
These threaded implements should have a basic tolerance factor for their proper functioning. You use the thread ring gauges to determine the tolerance factors, pitch, etc of the screws and the other externally threaded implements. Of course, you would require the Go and the No Go ring gauges to determine this level of tolerance. The principle is such that the screw should easily pass through the Go ring while failing to do so with the No Go ring. This is the basic test. Every screw should pass this test for attaining the fitness to function in the industry.
At the same time, you would also find the implements with the internal threads. You cannot obviously use the ring gauges with these implements. You have to use the thread plug gauges for doing so. The principle is the same. The plug gauges gave the Go and the No Go sides to it. The plug has to pass through the Go side easily whereas it should not do so through the No Go side. In case it fails to do so, it entails that the implement is faulty and hence requires modifications.
The advantages
The advantage of the thread gauges is that it enables you to inspect the full thread profile and pitch. You need not have to impart a great deal of training to the workers for handling these implements. Any apprentice trainee would be able to do so. This test can easily identify the component as ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’. This would enable the manufacturer to take immediate remedial action.
Final words:
You should never underestimate the strength of the common screw. One wrong turn and you could head in a different direction.

Buyers Guide for Thread Gauges
Not sure what thread gauges to buy? Our buyers’ guide explains what you need to know.
Competition in today’s manufacturing industry is very tight, and it is crucial that all threaded components are thoroughly assessed. It is therefore necessary to use the right types of thread gauges, as choosing the right inspection instrument will determine quality. If the wrong instrument is used it can result in productivity loss and affect the product’s performance.
Meeting the Standards
For metric thread gauges the specified system is ISO1502 to ensure quality. In contemporary production of threads, different types of tools are used such as digital, dial and fixed limit. No matter what the technique or tool used, what’s important is the desired results are attained as quickly as possible.
Whether you’re using thread plug gauges or other types, they should adhere to the standards like ANSI B1.16M for screw threads and ASME / ANSI B1.2 for screw threads that are unified. Depending on your needs, other standards could be used like the FED-STD-H28/ System 21. Apart from meeting the various Mil standards, threads should also be traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
If production involves a lot of measuring, random inspection of samples is necessary. In most cases the gauge has to be used according to the reference temperature (68 F / 20 C) to ensure the results are accurate. If inspections will be performed at other temperatures, you have to factor in expansion coefficients.
Tips for Buying Quality Gauges
If you’re going to buy gauges, make sure they are of the highest quality. Given the important role they play in manufacturing you cannot settle for anything less than the best. Aside from that however you also need to look into the following.
• Look for aged gauge steel that is true to size and very stable.
• Thread plug gauges have a minimum hardness level requirement. Make sure the gauge you buy has a hardness level that is significantly higher than the minimum.
• They must have a high wear and tear resistance level so you don’t have to keep buying new ones.
• Standard and custom tolerance models must be available, whatever your design may require.
These are the most important features to look for, but there are other factors you may want to consider. For instance there should be certificates of inspection. In certain situations you may also need to laser mark specs on specific units; make sure that feature is available.
There are also gauges with double surfaces and this provides sufficient space for marking, so you may want to look into these as well. You may also want to look at gauges with a dirt flute so you can use it even in difficult situations. Another safety feature you should check out is knurled handles for better gripping and handling.
Internal Thread Gauges
Go and no go plug gauges are set on a handle up to 40 mm in diameter. The go thread plug gauge inspects the internal thread’s virtual size and the appropriate screw fit. It also looks for the smallest internal thread pitch diameter size. It will also check for form deviations like thread profile angle deviations, pitch as well as the major diameter’s smallest size.
Plug gauges need to be hand screwed into the workpiece thread full length without excessive use of force. Just like other metric thread gauges these are subject to wear and tear and need regular inspection. Another way to prevent rapid deterioration is to use gauges in TiN or hard chrome coating.
Here are a few more suggestions to ensure the gauge you’re using is the best one. First, the plug must be simple and safe to use, as this will reduce the learning curve and increase productivity. Second, get gauges in varying sizes and has a significant thread depth.
Thread gauges should be easy to adjust and must support universal application. As mentioned earlier, TiN or chrome coating is recommended for extra durability and resistance. Finally, a 0.5 mm measuring accuracy is ideal.

Four Things to Bear in mind while Choosing Thread Gauges Manufacturers
ACME thread gauges and other gauges models may hardly have any recognition in the mainstream market but these tools of inspection are used widely across various industries. Most electrical gadgets you hold are designed using a backend cover and a frontend. These devices are attached firmly to each other with the help of screws, nuts, and bolts. Designing screws and nuts that are small can be a daunting task. Finding the accurate shapes and developing an opening to get these screws attached firmly is where gauges come to great help. Gauges assist experts involved in performing such duties to measure accurately that eventually lead to perfection.
Here are Four Things to bear in mind when it comes to Choosing an Online Gauge Retailer:
Quality: Quality plays a crucial role in buying the right gauge tools. A reliable online supplier will ensure to offer products that are worth more than the money paid by customers. Gauge tools are used to take accurate measurements such as the diameter and circumference of screw, nuts, and bolts. As a result, if the gauge you procure has any minor defect then the task you perform using those tools will eventually lead you to develop imperfections. Thus, it is always recommended by customers to place utmost emphasis over the quality of these Thread gauges.
Services: Failing to brainstorm the services offered by a particular manufacturer or retailer can lead you to bear grave consequences. At times, gauges that are available readymade may not be of much help since it may or may not meet your specifications in hand. Thus, there arises a need to get custom-made gauges. Ensuring if the manufacturers provide such custom production services can help buyers to get products as per their specifications and needs. Buyers can procure custom-made print over gauges and other packing materials.
Stock: An online retailer can always be judged by analyzing the amount of stock retained by them. This is probably the first thing a buyer should look out for when they are aiming to procure such measuring instruments. A supplier who maintains a huge stock of such materials can easily cater to the needs of the buyer. Thread rings, plugs, metric thread gauges are certain core types of instruments used extensively throughout various sectors. Examining the reputation enjoyed by different manufacturers and accordingly choosing one can help you stay on the safe side.
Payment and delivery:
At times, experts procuring these gauges and other inspections may need them as quick as possible. Under such circumstances, finding the right retailer or supplier who stocks different tools of inspection and who would be ready to dispense it at your request immediately becomes necessary. Many buyers under a situation of urgency tend to settle for poor or inferior quality gauges that shall eventually lead to a bad purchase transaction. Thus, checking the payment and delivery options offered by different reputed online shops can help you make an informed purchase decision. Nowadays, most retailers involved in offering gauges provide online payment methods that make things easier on part of the customers and sellers to undertake a smooth transaction.

Buy High Quality Thread Gauges from a Reliable Provider
The main aim of a businessperson involved in the nuance of calibration is finding a good supplier of Thread Gauges of high quality, who makes an on-time delivery. Earlier calibration was done manually and only two methods were used for this purpose.
Manufacturing process of thread gauges consist of many factors. The parameters that are usually considered in manufacturing of a gauge are:
Hardness of raw material
Thread flank surface finish
Material and Heat treatment
Fitment of gauging with its components
A calibration certificate issued with the gauge would be based on stringent checks against certain parameters that would include the above and more. A good supplier would gladly issue a calibration certificate or will be willing to testify to any other calibration test as required by the customer. A supplier who agrees to manufacture special gauge according to a particular specification mentioned by a customer, is the perfect choice to go for.
If you want to order Thread gauges then there are many options available, few of the names are listed below:
A) UN Thread gauges – Unified Constant Pitch Thread gauge that has Internal Thread Tolerance Class: 1B, 2B, 3B and external thread tolerance Class: 1A, 2A, 3A. Order a special gauge without worry. Special custom service by the supplier will provide delivery within 1-2 weeks time.
B) ACME thread gauges – It is made to replace other older types of screw forms and is used in tools and machines. It has a 29° angle, which is different from Trapezoidal thread gauge by 1 degree. It is measured in inches therefore; the pitch is counted thread-per-inch. There are three types of ACME gauge use the variety as per the space requirement.
i) General purpose ACME – They are widely used for gauging with Tolerance class: 2G, 3G, and 4G and in compliance with the standard – ASME B1.5-1997 BS 1104:1957.
ii) Centralizing ACME - For the critical thread features parameter like pitch diameter and major diameter are to be focused on. There are two standards known as GO and NOGO for compliance to assure that gauge is made with highest standard. GO Work Plug gauge assures that gauge is stays under maximum material condition. NOGO Work Plug gauge and Major Plug gauge to assure that pitch diameter is not too large and major diameter is not made too big respectively.
iii) Stub-ACME threads ring and plug gauges are used when the space is limited.
C) NPT – Dry-Seal American National Standard Taper Pipe thread gauges. There are two subtypes in this gauge. For internal thread Plug gauges are used and for external thread Ring gauges are used.
D) BSPP (G) – British Standard Pipe Parallel thread gauge. This has a constant diameter and the thread angle is 55°.
E) BSPT(R) – British Standard Pipe Taper thread gauge. This has a diameter that increases or decreases along the length of the thread.
The other thread gauges to explore the list is – API, NPSM and Whitworth. UNJ used in airplane industry and spacecraft industry. For mass production instead of thread gauges you have Thread taps to count on. There are UN Thread taps, ACME Thread Taps, NPT Thread Taps, BSPP Taps and Trapezoidal Taps.
