Toujours pratique,
Rosalie.
Dans ta vieillesse,
Auras-tu des amis ?
Où habiteras tu ? Avec ton fils?
Pourras-tu enfin guérir ?

Every once in a while I find myself thinking of Rosalie, from the Maupassant' novel "Une vie".
She got raped by her patron. She got pregnant. She was fired from the family where she had been service since she was a child, separated from her bestie/boss. Said family felt in debt with her and so, they gave her child a house, a house where she could live until the child turn 25, moment where the house would be his. Through this housing situation, they found a husband for her for the sake of her reputation and whatnot, a man from the village, who agreed to marry her only because she was getting this house. When she was in her 40s, her child was already 25 and about to get married, so she went back to her bestie/boss's house, knowing that this lady wasn't doing well and was incapable of thriving in any way. She went to help her, to manage her house and her life because she cared about her but also, because she had no other place to live. She was still young to be cared for by her child and the house wasn't hers, she wouldn't want to live with them either. She even managed her lady's family situation and got her to bring her grand-daughter home. The very resourceful Rosalie, illiterate but clever and hardworking. The living situation of these two women in the 19th Century, rising Jeanne's grand-daughter.
I would love a book about her. I would write a book about her. She shows up only at the beginning and at the end but what a character. I could almost see her.
