He raised this bubble monster since it was a baby and worries about her getting mixed with other water things... Dad behaviour...

It's like he asks her to come out to fight.

He can't ask her that, he alredy sent her to battle. Is it either them or the quimera and he knows it damn well, that's why he looks at Marcille with something close to pity. He can't ask the undine to stop. He needs, they all need, the monster to be dead.

And then his baby droplet gets obliterated by this monster. He's not recovering up emotionally from this anytime soon. He freezes a few seconds in absolute shock.

"I even find it cute now". His baby is dead. It's gotta be something akin to adopt a stray cat since baby and then he gets run over. He starts tearing up. Look at this man's poor face, he's destroyed.

Here he's mourning the loss of his undine possibly, all sad faced. He is, at the end, the only one that lost someone there (many died but revived, and Falin doesnt count because she's alive). Either that or he managed to, somehow, save a bit of her and put it on the bottle and it's feeling sorry for his elemental or saying sorry.

I hate Dungeon Meshi spoilers but at risk of doing it myself:

Gotta love the exquisite irony of the whole Undine mini-arc starting with the Undine getting angry at Marcille for pouring hot water on it... Only for the Undine being literally boiled to death in the end so Marcille can drink it

Note that the undine is very much not evil. It's just a wild thing reacting in a perfectly normal way. In fact, it is the undine which has been "wronged" in the first place. This is not a matter of a villain getting their ironic but very carmic punishment.

A lot has been said about the central themes of Dungeon Meshi, but I think one interesting component we rarely see in stories is this particular embrace of brutality and unfairness. Not to condone cruelty, but in service of that unapologetic "taking up space" which the author said was an explicit philosophy in her work.

A lot of morality is centered on taking up as little space as possible, make yourself smaller, more convenient, more easy to coexist with.

Especially when it comes to food and consumption. I'll probably step on a minefield if I go any further, but I can't help but think about the intersections of veganism and a certain idea of femininity - and how powerful it is that Dungeon Meshi was specifically created by a woman.

Not only will Marcille burn you with hot water on accident without saying sorry, she and her friends will then deliberately hunt you down to kill you specifically with the thing that upset you in the first place, so she can eat you. It's pushed to the extreme here, to really drive the point home.
