The Entire PLOT (SPOILERS WARNING)

Okay, since I am in a terribly good mood. Imma ramble once more about TimeHealsTale (THT) again right here and for Eagle too. Maybe have a bit of a revamp too. Maybee.

Trigger Warning: Dark topics of war, abuse, inhumane experimentations, genocide, marriage for benefits, etc. not really safe and fluffy. I made and carved this story during covid lockdown. It is not a cosy story. But hey there is the power of friendships and hope in here too.

TimeHealsTale is an AU set in an IRL situation where Undertale's plotline takes place but it is only a small narrative over the entire history of the AU's creation. See, the story starts all the way from the beginning from the creation of the AU. From Nothing to Something.

Oblivion or any other name it can be referred by as it was nothing decided to create something. It controls nothing but basically gets the ball rolling for everything. Doesn't really gives a crap of Anything happening in their sandbox because nothing was only an audience. It saw the threat of a random entity entering its domain and making a mess on his creation. Hates it. Obliterates it.

The entity Changing something (ie gaster's development) in the narrative and threw the entire thing off course from the Undertale plotline to TimeHealsTale plotline instead. Like ya know how a butterfly flaps its wings and change the entire course of history. It is like that.

Nothing didn't do anything to gaster because Nothing recognises Gaster as one of their even if... Changed. It just shrugs and moved on. Keeps watching. Oblivion recognise no concept of Time. They/It are just glad to have Something to hold on. For it was theirs. Even if Gaster/Gesu/ Wind Chimes of Slaves was kinda ripping apart his creation at the seams with high goals to rewrite history to his liking. They/It do not see him as a threat.

Nothing very VERY JEALOUSLY guards it from Outside entities. Absolutely rejects their very presence. Ink, Error, Fresh, Dream SwapSans and any other AUs. There is a reason why this AU is hardly known by others. Sitting right in the corner, hidden away and more. It is very young yet the AU itself is rich with its own history. Filled with entire galaxies, planets and unique ecosystems.

Not merely a game.

It is life that this particular part of nothingness adores.

Really a walking contradiction like all life.

Doesn’t gives a shit but actually give a shit.

Now onto the THT Plotline.

The Entity having given Gesu a mind of his own.

Okay, let’s rewind a bit. Monsters exist here. From the beginning of the planet Earth. The first Monster to be created was a plasma Monster made of pure energy that formed under the wishes of many MANY creations dying in a tsunami or some form of cataclysmic event. Their SOULs wishing or hoping for a saviour, for light, for warmth and lo behold they got their saviour.

Albeit, a bit late as they were all dead to get help.

This pure energy of a Monster was mindless, aimless but with a single goal. To help, to give light and warmth, to GIVE HOPE. Reshaping the planet as we speak. It in records of history was recognised as the first Monster. Compared to as the sun on cave carvings. Having life flourish on this harsh environment. An Ancient being that formed a mind of its own after centuries and carved the earth to be as it was now. Before “dying” and becoming the moon.

A floating ball of congregated dust in space pulling the tides for earth.

Ya gotta know, a Monster’s lifespan in this au is effin long as heck.

Humans with such a short lifespan easily accepts them as deities at times before forgetting and the cycle repeats.

So basically, Monsters are made of wishes from a living things’s dying will. Like that. And at times there will be multiple all over the planet. Gotta keep in mind that these exist outside of the galaxy too. So these means Monsters exist universally as well in space XDc. Moreover, if two Monsters or more get together, yes they can have offsprings and thus begins the group of Monsters going around with settlements of their own.

And now there is a whole generation of Monsters. Born instead of made thus, they also forget if their Ancient Monster Ancestors refused to goshdarn explain their origins to their kids. I mean who wanna tells em. “I was made by HUNDRED IF NOT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DYING to form me.” Yeah? Yeap .

Sooo, Gesu. In the period time of the year 1300 ish formed under on accident with the rest of his batchmates of two Ancient beings duking it out, who were created PURPOSELY by the warring Human clans for WAR. Specifically, Gashodokuro and a floating demon mask, Oni Mask. He, Gesu not named yet or it back then, lives underground, a creature who works in the coal mines put to work by humans, cause it was mindless an animal so why not? Humans says.

BUT, it encountered the ENTITY who says wow that is suppose to be a Monster what da hell. Then used its power to form Gesu’s soul. A Soul that held no hope, compassion or anything that resembles resolved itself to give a fuck for another person. It was formed too early, unnaturally developed to quick by the entity’s ignorant act. HIS savior, gave him a mind to think, to speak, to walk on two instead to swim in the dirt or walk on fours rattling like a horror creature. Mask slips on to hide sharp sharp teeth, laughing laughing in silence at nothing and form eyelights to look at the flaming darkness that was the entity in the dark darker yet darker cave he was slaving away getting coal for ungrateful walking flesh.

So unnatural to him.

It seems very, very interesting.

“Gesu (Slave), what will you do now?”

“I will follow you, my Master.” For he knows not nothing else.

“Oh fuck.”

So this begins Gesu borderline yandere obsession with the Entity that once nothing removed the random Entity Gesu wanted to rewrite history to turn back time to get the Entity.

This all took a span of 500 hundred plus years. Holy hell muffin.

He uh, kinda researched the creation of Monsters, the history of Awakened Humans which is another story to tell that is mainly about Humans awakening their latent ability to wield magic of their own if they spend enough amount of time in a Monster settlement. Happens to very few special people that will be attached to a specific ‘thing’ that their awakened abilities will have to be conducted with. Because apparently Humans are much more solid and volatile concentration of energy than a regular Monster that feels more natural and in tune easily with everything.

A Human’s abilities are limited but powerful.

A Monster’s abilities are limitless but weak.

Ie, Humans are limited to their colour and conduit, like I can heal by cooking food in my frying pan, so green magic but colours are relative that’s another whole ass story.

A Monster can freaking use any colour of Magic but do have inclinations to be stronger in one kind of colour magic suited their subspecies like Goat Monsters/Ram demon from hell So cool. Suit Fire Magic! Skeletons, Gravity Magic!. But goshdarn they are weak physically than the humans in these au and attacks on Humans are so hard for them too. But Monsters can absolutely kill Humans here just as easily. Humans are just more sturdy.

Now imagine, Gesu going around doing research. He does burn a few towns and Monster settlements not gonna lie. But when he heard that there was an entire clan of Monsters just sitting ducks after getting excommunicated to some island and sealed underground at that. He was like GOLD. I STRUCK GOLD. It was a Skeleton Monster Clan of Course.

He gets arrested, gets thrown there, blends in, works hard to not seem suspicious. But was suspicious as hell. But he was very useful so that negates clearly everything he does.

Goddamit this is so long. Imma continue it when I am not irritated by my own story anymore. Geez.

But long story short.

Gesu or Gesuto or Gaster now, ochrestrated Komi’s life cause she is his daughter, borned of him. Brought up to be immune to DT or what is the centre core of a Human’s SOUL that has in abundance of. Something that CREATES Ancient Monsters upon death of the many. He wishes to posses her body like a puppet once she develops the ability to rewind Time. Because ya know that’s a thing here XDc, A Monster’s or Komi’s fineness in manipulating Magic and Frisk’s raw energy of DT. He wants to possess them both. The greedy bastard.

Shit life Komi lead, brought up as a pig for slaughter in a pen house that Gaster effin murdered all her family for, testing DT magic on every one of them till they haemorrhage on it, choking to death died in a pile of sludge and planned keeping Papyrus around because he detest her short stature. Like rude.

Wanna know how he got the DT?

He farmed Humans travelling into the prison Underground cave. He sealead ALL Entrances, keeping them for himself, put traps for Humans wanting to brave the cave lines. HE IS GOOD AT CAVE LINES. Then he keeps them barely alive in his dungeon. This goes on for 500 hunderd years. Underground Monsters should have been freed by at the latest the 20th year of imprisonment but because he didn’t want that, of course not.

Komi found the dungeon and fucking vomits.

Komi found out that the sealed “dust” of her mom’s that passed away when she was eight was actual sludge and she hurls again.

It was a horror show.

She lived her life dependent on someone she believed loved her and would do anything to heal her of her ailment. A “terminal disease” that she was born with only to realize, he was the cause of it. Marrying her mother, only to use her to create the perfect tool to his reach his dream. (DT proximity radiation on the mother’s wedding necklace, right above her SOUL, cause of death)

This entire story is a horror mystery.

Where Komi and her gang of friends unravels everything one by one.

But it is actually more of a, her friends deprogramming her abuse and subtle brainwashing by Gesu. Slowly, as the story is arching over the her life growing up into an adult. With friends around her starting to notice the harm Gesu is doing and discrepancies in her life.

Doggo, her childhood friend and brother in all but blood.

Found the dungeon first.

Dude there is so many side characters in this. Side villains, side plots, side everything, oh my cheesepuffs sticks. I love it.

Honestly, if it wasn’t for Doggo rooting for her to be a kid just like him and ALphys teaching the power of friendship through anime. She be so dead. If Papyrus wasn’t there for her to look after and be looked after in return she be double or triple dead.

The entire STORY IS TOO DANG LONG.,

The Rebellion Arc. Or Snowdin Fiasco Muscle Boy Free from Dungeon /Komi Ignites Green to Push her limit and Save 4 year old Papyrus / Papyrus witness brutal human death by a grinning Gaster and Komi crashing down with a wide gaping cracked skull hella traumatized.

The Quashing of the Rebellion Arc/Next step to getting the Soul he wanted Arc. / Forced to Go Green Komi

Komi is a child Villain? No! I am 14! I am an adult and you will obey me Alphys (insert last name here)! Alphys : Okay, here have an orange and some anime. Arc Plus, gain some confidence Arc by Alphys due to being passionate about the injustice that was “shouting about I am evil and entitled you are all beneath me, Komi” as the kid spews clearly repeated lines adorably at her in overalls and boots, cackling MUAHAHAHAHHA like a classic anime villain.

Alphys wants an autograph and a therapist.

Komi realizing that she doesn’t approve of the people living the life they have now. Promised the Terrible Terrors of Waterfall better living situations in the name of her fallen skeleton clan people that had once nobly lead the people of Monsterkind. Realized she doesn’t have to do it alone. That she needs power too.

Que, breaking into the King’s Castle Arc.

Asgore: (hobo dazed in grief still after orange muscle child human died) Lucida? Is that you? Komi: NAY, I AM COMIC SANS DU FONT AND I CHALLENGE YOU FOR THE THRONE!

She is fucking adorable.

She did not get the throne but she got biscuits and a listening ear and a signature and a promise to visit his castle whenever

She visits because the King’s place is a terrible dump and she is wee bit neurotic about clean environment to live in. Plus, the King made somewhat decent pies and amazing golden flower tea.

Insert the Lost Judgement Chambers Arc, stuck in a void in the in between where uncle by 5 years older is stuck in a limbo also died at 5 years old. A clue to who did it. Sike. Also named Comic Sans Du Font) A room where she and the King needs to cross in yet only she could see it through the film of darkness. And a garden that would lead to a Greenery to solve the food shortage in the next few years.

Insert Papyrus jealousy Arc that spans in between story and accumulates until he got a frying pan to the head only for her sister to come in between him and Gaster. … But she still try to make excuses for the bastard that that was just dad. Papyrus finally sees it for what it truly was a growing six year old and understand that holy fuck Gaster was hella mean for a dad. Being jealous of a sister who always been there for him, picking him up from school and giving him hugs to scare away nightmares and for her to have a shitty father was absolutely hella shit.

Insert I’m gonna die and I accept it Arc by Komi, who made a will for Papyrus, prepares a house for him far away in Snowdin away from Gaster because she knows that Papyrus is not safe from him. But oh, SHE DEFINITELY WAS SAFE WITH HIM. THE EFFIN IDIOT. The will and the house was an entire Arc that involves Doggo and his uncle and aunt Dogamy and Dogressa who took away Doggo from waterfall from his original family that declared him the weakest runt of the litter and deserved to die all because he was blind and with him colluding with the Waterfall’s Terrors that was just bad influence. Dogamy and Dogaressa claims these three in a heartbeat as family. Screw it if they were skeletons and they were dogs. The children were theirs. Stupid laws stating that 14 year olds were competent adults is dumb as fuck and would not stop them from howling to the sky and having the kids follow along. Better yet if the skeleton children did it too, even if in embarrassment.

ASDGJAFKLNA (AWOOOOO) gibberish – Komi and Papyrus/Ru

Yeah they helped a lot and inspired Papyrus to join the Snowdin brigade.

Next Arc is the heartwrenching tale where she feels death creeping up at her, the medicine that she took daily was no longer working on her. Green Magic that runs throughout her body no longer feels sustainable and Gravity Magic making her bones attached to one another no longer feels enough to hold her together. Arc she died and got stuck in a coma for 1 year and half after Papyrus’s birthday and giftmas. Papyrus 8th bday gift is a house in Snowdin she worked and didn’t manage to pay for but supplymented by Dogamy and Dogaressa and adoption papers to the dog family that will ensure he gets everthing to the skeleton family because apparently the laws are tight that no outsiders married to the family will get an inch of inheritance in here.

Papyrus, I don’t want a house, I want my sister back. The stupid I am off to die letter was not enough. Trauma MORE TRAUMA. Eigth year old abandoned feels the pain of Eight year old Komi abandoned. WHAT A MIRROR.

Arc The Rescue. Doggo and Alphys who her parents got blackmailed by gaster made a daring rescue attempt after finding where Komi went to after a year of research. But, no it was actually Gaster dropping clues to them. He was airtight. Gaster had nothing incriminating on him.

He was just healing his daughter after all from a terminal illness that killed off all the skeleton clan people. (cough chemical genocide cough) Look, his daughter is right there on the bed all healed up just stuck in a coma. Please take care of her for him. He did no wrong of course. Not at all.

Doggo can smell the lies on him and growls.

Gaster: Such a good loyal mutt you are.

Alphys: Let’s retreat. We got what we came here for.

Gaster: Ever the practical one, Doctor.

Alphys: (Hiss in dinosaur lizard language)

Doggo carries unmoving Komi home to Snowdin to an even more traumatized Papyrus who now has an unmoving Komi iunder the basement for 6 months. The poor kid.

I just love making these pair of siblings life a pain. I know. Covid was a bad time for me.

Papyrus kinda fills up the time with training and getting stronger to kick his not dad’d coccyx because he knows HE DID THIS. He’ll protect his sister if he had to die for it. (Obsession is strong)

Grows stronger when he failed again and again and again.

Dude he needs a therapist so bad. Komi you should stop throwing yourself into dangerous situation where you keep dying in front of him or put yourself in danger of dying. It is unhealthy. Doggo is the glue to their tumultuous relationship.

Arc Komi wakes up and is crippled Arc. Can’t move her body. She is entirely calm in front of Papyrus who she asks gently to get Doggo. She broke down in front of Doggo. Hella she felt useless for being alive right now. Papyrus, 9, was behind the door gritting his teeth.

Komi: I can’t move. How am I going to protect anyone if I can’t move?! I can’t protect Papyrus like this. I am scared. I am so scared. Doggo. Dad can help. I want Dad.

…

Can you please help keep Papyrus in aunt and uncle’s house. Just for a bit. I don’t think…. He’d like Papyrus around for this.

Doggo remains valiantly stone faced in the face of it. Even if he wants to whoooo boy shout and scream at the unfairness of the world. His sister by bond is in pain and she doesn’t even know she’s swallowing the poison herself.

Doggo: (breaths in and out) How about I’ll go get Al instead, she’s the closest. Later, … I’ll go get Dr. Wing Dings.

Komi: Thanks, Brugo. You’ve always helped me out… Thank you. And, I am sorry.

Doggo: Don’t apologize, Coco. You didn’t ask for this. You should rest.

Komi: Yeah.. Hey, why are you calling dad. Dr. Wing Dings now.

Oops went on a tangent,

So Arc. Komi feels like she’s fucking useless and gains mobility of her arms but not her legs yet. So useless she wants to die but she needs to get to dad first. Because she is a literal walking Time Bomb now. Explodes in a power of rewinding everything around her dramatically. Doesn’t understand why everyone is stopping her from seeing him. Additionally wasn’t aware for when Gaster actually came into her room crushed her SOUL in front of Papyrus who screams fucking bloody murder. She stayed not awake for two weeks.

But oh ya know, Dad came to pick her up at the frontdoor and the Arc he jumped himself into the CORE of the machine. Saying random stuff that tugged at heartstrings and honestly Komi was heartbroken again and really was at the lowest point in that moment. Even if it went all according to his plan.

She really wanted to die alone in the forest of Snowdin, if it wasn’t for grillby going out taking wood to burn later. Granpa Grill Arc. It is an adorable sweet scene of Gran Grill hefting her on his back holding her crutches and then giving her tea. Before gently pointing out the things she has to live for. It takes awhile to get through her head a bit. Like a long whle

Arc of Change and development happening. Greenery in Snowdin, more jobs opening. Alphys mentioning they couldn’t have done it without her. The leader of the Terrible Terrors decking her in the face for her close call action before she hugged the stuffing out of her. There she was surrounded by family and was fucking blind to it. Papyrus gets a new mentor from Waterfall. The honoured Captain Undyne, the one to bring down the Waterfall Terrors at the age of 14.

Arc Time Bombed. She blew up in the Snowdin forest. Hauntingly shouting desperately Papyrus to run. To not get rewinded out of existence. He couldn’t make it. But Gerson visiting his student’s student did and threw Papyrus away out of range in time to get hit by the blast and yeah. Time rewinded for him along with the forest that grew luscious green leaves and turned old Gerson to the youthful in body yet luckily not in mind. A seven feet towering height muscular Commander of the Monsterkind that joyously laughs at his regained youth.

Flexing his muscles that he had once in his prime.

Picked up a befuddled Komi and Papyrus and head for his old friend Grillby.

Grillby: What the fuck.

Gerson and Gran Grill had a shouting match about child soldiers and what constitutes as one for Papyrus. Papyrus stand his ground in front of adults that he WILL BE A ROYAL GUARD. HE WILL LEARN TO PROTECT. Komi breaks internally.

Further breaks as the truth comes out about her father in lieu of Doggo and Alphys investigation now with the help of Undyne who has a crush on the hot and assertive passionate Alphys.

Komi didn’t know what to believe anymore.

What didn’t help was the Flowey Arc. Alphys did the same thing but this time at least she had Komi’s help. Having learned to control her rewind abilities that she knows enough to use it in occasions now to avoid the accumulation of the DT energy in her SOUL. Alphys not telling that she had tested on the King’s personal flower so holy shite. Because why would that be important? The worst part is Komi is aware of everything looping like groundhog day and the apathy grew and grew until damn she pushed away a worried Papyrus who, saw her dead dead eyelights, from her door and walked out without a word because why bother talking.

She had a gun to get from Catty and Bratty to modify into a sniping rifle and weed to pull from its roots.

Disabled Komi walking with one crutch learned to blow herself up with her unstable white magic called Bomber Snappers, modelling it after her father’s Gaster Blasters and Bratty’s head. Bomber Snappers that can sink into the ground to get the weed out of the earth and crush him to bits. Snipping for Flowey’s Flowey Omega’s eye. Before she learned to grow bones straight from the monster’s eyes and body. Giving in to her own medical knowledge that she has and been taught by good old dad to do a macabre scene of Flowy bursting with bone attacks coming from the inside.

Even her apathy twinged with regret at the sight of him screaming like the permanently 11 years old he was.

So she gave up.

Flowey’s constant repeats had actually aided Gaster’s design.

He planned for a Human’s … but this would do.

Komi’s SOUL had developed its next stage but she was falling down as a Monster.

Flowey who now can see the eerie Gaster standing in the void where he makes his RESETS. Recoils in fear and horror once he realized that he won’t be able to RESET anymore. Because’s Komi’s SOUL is overlapping his. He should’ve realized she was gaining more power in each attack, in each reset. Komi also hardly reaslising that fact as she laid on her bed. Willing her self to just shut down and die there.

But flowey who had been upset in the last few resets where Komi didn’t even bother with him nor getting up from the bed to deal with his shenanigans and murdered her friends and family before her.

Flip his lid and dragged out her melting body off the bed to meet his mother who was a stupidly good healer.

Toriel can probably heal her crumbling mind. Hopefully.

Cue Arc putting a ducktape over a depression which was the desire to be useful to others other than themselves. Komi becomes a Healer and smiles a bit. Adores, feels fond of her siblings who breaksdown Toriel’s door to get to her. Panicking about a kidnapping, traces of leaves drag marks, sludge dust and sled tracks. Flowey getting the stink eye from Papyrus.

Flowey does indeed get along with Papyrus in the coming story. Flowey calls him the most insane I don’t want to get on his bad side genius, mastermind Papyrus.

Komi having high functioning depression. Smiles, waves works as a Healer for the Underground. Give and gives. Stupidly popular which works in her favour to fulfil Toriel’s promise she made (to save the Humans that comes through. She fully supports this.) with much to Undyne eternal chargin. Because after she became a Healer, prison time for her rule breaking was limited to less than a week even then Komi was summoned to Heal in between that time all over the Underground so that was useless.

Friends but with different belief’s yes.

Doesn’t help she has the King’s ear. Oh, look is that the Judge I hear? Nah, that’s just the Healer who kinda sticks around the unseeable Judgement Chambers sealed in void. Where she can breathe just a bit and see a small shadow of her five year old Uncle sticking around waving her hello.

Her mentality is that of a glass cannon at that point. Without her friends checking on her. There would not be any pieces of her left to glue together with gold like the Kintsugi method.

Advenstures with Frisk plus friendship growing soft fluffly sweet yadda yadda. Before guilt in Frisk cause them to admit in the Judgment Chambers that they accidentally killed a Froggit initially before they came here on accident.

They RESET the Sealed Underground much to Komi’s desperate shout of No getting unheard. Warning from Flowey ringing in her mind after that weed decided the Monsterkind was worth his time. And he amazingly befriended Papyrus of all people.

Arc kick gaster’s butt after he possessed Frisk body Arc before hand it kinda overlaps , preparation for THE DAY and a bunch of quick thinking from everyone. Because luck and hope and resolve is on their side.

Komi realizing she freaking cannot die or give up if she doesn’t want Gaster to win.

Special Void room plays a crucial role.

Arc Secret Lab and DT extracter that Al(Alphys) and Dyno lover (Undnye) prepared. Komi killing her father off to save Frisk.

But goshdarn he wasn’t even dead then but just vibing in the void waiting patiently for Frisk or his daughter to determinedly desire a RESET of the world with SOUL shards floating in his centre for SOUL.

Arc, Komi tattling happening on the time loop because she is not the one to keep anything from her family anymore. Because look at where that led to. Hugged both her brothers who died in the Gaster Possession Route. Everyone in Toriel’s house. Undyne did not have the same desperate camaderie develop with Komi in the GP Route but she tries even as Komi smiles at her and calls her brave as fuck. Al is in good hands.

Undyne: I WON”T GIVE UP!

Komi the hypocrite: (Dragging a rewinded unsludgified Undyne from her Last Defence Form Away from Possesed!Frisk.) GIVING UP IS NOT WEAK! RETREATING TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY IS NOT WEAK! FIGHTING ANOTHER DAY IS MORE AWESOME THAN DYING HERE AND NOW. ALPHYS IS WATCHING YOU DUMBASS. YOU WANT HER TO SEE YOU DIE? WE NEED YOU! SHE NEEDS YOU.

Very nice heart to heart moment in Arc Secret Lab where Komi becomes bait leading Gaster away to Void Room and Undyne and Al prepares the DT extractor. Where Undyne says sorry for her loss to Komi when she remembers Doggo and Paps did not make it. It sucked.

Gerson the cool old man died in place of Undyne. Sacrficing for the youngins he says its easy. No parents wants to see their young leave them first.

Gaster; How admirable. I’ll give you an honourable death o disgraced commander.

Arc Ending. Hug an ugly crying twelve year old frisk that says they are sorry for killing people. They are having a hard time computing that Komi is a child of that bastard as what the fuck? Seriously? Frisk gets hot cocoa feels awkward bunch of already close knit individuals but was warmly welcomed only Komi giving green lit card for time travelling shenanigans and flowey’s input. Still keeping a one eye open though.

Now with Undyne entourage and proof of too specific things details by Komi. Frisk can walk too easily up to the King’s Castle. Moreso when Al and Komi whispers of things that they discovered on accident of things that would make everything so much better. Excitedly talking of possibilities. .

Witches that waited for generation for the power of the Ebbot Island Seal to be theirs was shattered and they cursed to the sky for the one that did it. Cough Komi RUN cough. Government approaching the site with a bat to whack the witches away and welcome new neighbours cause holy muffins 500 years of residents in their land. Well ahem, natives hidden away sealed underground land.

Military Commander having tea with Queen Toriel as Asgore is stuck in a political prison of a Royal House Arrest. Parliament in session. Organizing a group of Humans to intergrate into the Underground and bringing some Monsters up to intergrate on the Surface of Ebbot Island. New Act was pass to accept the Underground residents as recognized citizens and free rehoming will be given.

Komi wakes up 3 months after all that happens.

In a random ass human hospital.

When it rains and thunders.

And she hides under the bed thinking it was a cave in shouting about an earthquake. Yeap.

Voidrift AU

Voidrift AU is one of the many alternate universes of Undertale. (Voidrifts heavily based on Xtale and Glitchtale-ish) Main Characters: Chara - The first fallen human. Frisk - The saviour of the underground Asriel/Flowey - The forgotten son of Asgore and Toriel (he will be relevant soon) ??? - The scientist of the underground, forgotten after the barrier was destroyed. Sans - Creation of ???, infused with Corruption Papyrus - Creation of ???, infused with Corruption CORRUPTION - Created with immense hate. Voidrift starts off with the monster's evil and pissed about being trapped underground. One human falls into the underground, Chara. His child is fond of Chara, and they become best friends. Chara is eventually killed by the humans, and Asgore decides to kill each Human who enters, as revenge. He eventually gathers 6 souls and waits for the 7th. The 7th one appears, the soul of Determination. The soul of Determination helps the monsters and eventually becomes fond of even Asgore. The Asriel fight happens, and the barrier is destroyed. Although, someone in the shadows is not happy with this change, and decides to do something about it. With his hate, he creates corruption (Basically hate, but worse). With his corruption, he decides he is powerful enough to fight Frisk. He returns to the surface, and wreaks chaos in the world until Frisk finds him. They fight, until Frisk is ultimately defeated, or so they thought. Out of nowhere, an explosion occurs, and Frisks' soul is combined with Chara. A soul containing Determination, and Corruption. Frisk and Chara fight with the guy, and "He" flees from the battle. Even more angered, he uses the leftover corruption to create two new lifeforms. He experiments and creates Sans and Papyrus. He infuses the corruption between the two, and the two are ready to fight. With that, that begins the main part of VOIDRIFT.

How to Be Me

Yellow again everyone! Oh? What’s this? A oneshot that doesn’t focus on Dream? Wow, I didn’t think I had it in me. This one focuses on Blue from Underswap, who, in my opinion, can remember the RESETs.

Also, be sure to listen to this song, as this was inspired by it. Can it also fit original Sans? Yes. However, I think it fits Blue better, okay?

Fandom: Undertale, but specifically Underswap

Characters: Blue (Who belongs to P0pcornPr1nce)

Warnings: Implied Suicide, and I think that’s the only major one? Let me know!

Chara RESET the world 146 times.

Blue knew this how? Well, quite simply, he remembered, and he kept track. A shock, he’s sure. It’s true all the same. His brother knows about the timelines, the scientific part of them anyway, but he does not remember them.

Luckily.

Blue would not wish this on anyone. It’s a sort of hell, the worst kind of torture. He has to pretend every single day that everything is fine and not pointless. He has to be the hope of this world. The hope of his brother, who has already given up. Hope, hope, hope.

Hope, hope, hope.

Just keep hoping.

Though he wonders. How can he keep being the hope, when he barely has any left?

I don’t feel safe in this bed

~oOo~

Then they started the Genocide runs.

After a year of peacefulness on the surface. After they reached the ultimate happy ending. After his brother began to be happy, truly happy, for the first time in a long while. After Blue began to let himself hope that that run was the last, that they could actually live now.

Haha.

He was a goddam fool.

Before he opened his eyes, he knew what had happened. He tensed. If he opened his eyes, he was sure to be back Underground, in his old room. Tears slipped down his face slowly, dripping onto his pillow. A dry sob escaped him. He held his hands to his eyes, daring to look at the ceiling between them.

The blank ceiling, devoid of any glow-in-the-dark stars, gazed back at him tauntingly.

There are voices in my head

~oOo~

Voices of the past haunted his mind as he shook.

“C’mon, B-Blue! W-we got a morning j-jog to do!”

“Make sure you don’t burn the house down again, you two!”

“Bro, don’t worry! You’ll go great at this! After all, you’re the Magnificent Sans!”

They wouldn’t stop. They wouldn’t leave him alone.

He curled up on his side, his hands moving to cover his ears as he mumbled ‘stop’ over and over again. Over, and over, and over…

Just like his entire life.

I’ve been talking to the dead

And the fear baptized me

Blue stared at the pile of dust in front of him, the orange hoodie gazing back silent and still.

He had played along when they left the ruins covered in faint dust and carrying that knife. He had acted like it wasn’t a problem at all. He knew what would happen if he didn’t. It seems he was wrong.

He wasn’t their target.

His brother had evacuated the town. Told him to go with, which he did for a bit, then he teleported away and arrived in time to see his brother’s head get chopped off. Yet, besides being on the verge of dying, his brother didn’t blame the human. He instead forgave him. Believed in him.

Now, he stood there, waiting for the tears to come. Tears for his only family member dying and leaving him alone. They didn’t appear.

It seemed Blue had run out of tears to give.

My kingdom turned to dust

And I watched all my riches rust

~oOo~

Slowly, he watched the Underground be purged of everyone.

Alphys, Napstablook, all of his friends. Gone.

Yet, he wasn’t surprised.

Blue watched the human continue to the castle.

~oOo~

Have I lost the Midas’ touch?

Or do sad eyes blind me?

~oOo~

They didn’t follow through.

Just when they reached the Final Corridor, they RESET again.

For the 148th time, Blue opened his eyes to a blank ceiling, a sinking feeling in his chest.

He didn’t cry anymore.

Over and over we go

Over the hills and the valleys below

~oOo~

223 times now.

They never want to finish what they started.

~oOo~

Oh, and it follows me, follows me home

And it suffocates me, hmmm

There was a numbness in his chest now.

“Bro, promise me you won’t try and fight the human?”

Blue doubted he could make it through one more incomplete run.

Oh, I can’t breathe

They actually entered the golden hallway this time.

It only took almost a hundred tries.

When they started forward, Blue was there to confront them. He forced a smile and spoke with a cheerfulness that made him feel sick.

“Heya! I see you’ve been, uh…a bit busy, haven’t you? Well, anyway! I’ve got a question for you. Do you think…even the worst person can change? That everyone…can be a good person, if they just…tried?”

“…”

“Mweh heh heh! Well, here’s a better question…do you want to have a bad time? Because if you take another step forward, you are really not going to like what happens next.”

“…”

“Well, sorry brother! This is why I never make promises!”

All I know is I forgot how to be me

“It’s a beautiful day outside…flowers are blooming…birds are singing…on days like these…kids like you…”

“…?”

“Should be burning in hell.”

Blue had once believed that killing wasn’t an option, no matter how desperate one became.

Funny how things change.

Funny how watching someone murder your kind over and over again, murder your brother over and over again, can make you think things differently.

It was almost funny enough to laugh at.

Instead, he looked away as another bunch of bones killed the human and restarted their battle.

There are bodies in the floors

And they breathe so loudly

~oOo~

103 times.

That’s how many times he had killed the human.

Chara was determined though. They wouldn’t stop until they killed him.

And Blue found himself longing for when that happened.

~oOo~

I wish I could move

Get up and walk right out this tomb

~oOo~

Leaving would be…troubling.

He would live, yes. But then he would be one of the only monsters left. He would be sentencing himself to a life of loneliness.

He didn’t like being alone. Never had.

So, he would remain here, blocking the path for this run and those in the future.

Because then he would be useful.

Do our saviours die too soon?

For my sins surround me

~oOo~

Chara got frustrated at death 200. They RESET again.

When Blue woke up this time, he woke up screaming. It was like all of his remorse, guilt and sadness that had abandoned him before had poured back into him. It left him shaking, his magic swirling around his room.

His brother hurried into the room, visibly worried and faintly scared. Just the sight of him calmed Blue down sufficiently, but he was still crying enough for Stretch to wrap him in a hug, rocking him and whispering comforts.

“It was just a nightmare,” he said.

Blue wished he could believe that.

Over and over we go

It continued like this for a few dozen more runs.

Each time it RESET, Blue woke up crying and screaming. He knew he was making his brother worry, especially because he never woke up like this before the timeline started being messed with. He couldn’t help it.

At least he was no longer numb.

They were in the hall again.

This time, Chara didn’t give up. They kept dodging with a sickening smile on their face.

Blue began to suspect that this human wasn’t the same one as before. He didn’t have proof, however.

He was beginning to get tired, too.

All I know is I forgot to be me

~oOo~

He offered them MERCY.

He was desperate.

They refused and attacked again.

Blue was beginning to consider just giving up and letting them kill him.

He didn’t find the thought of dying so bad, anyways.

Blue decided to use his special attack. Nothing.

He panted as he did.

He was, so, so tired.

Hm.

He could shut his eyes for just a minute, right?

Nothing is pulling me through

As he closed his eyes, he thought he heard a voice saying for him to wake up, to stay awake.

Which was weird, as he wasn’t sleeping, even if he wanted to.

Another thing was that the voice sounded like Stretch.

Which was impossible and he was dead.

I forgot how to be me

Much to Blue’s dismay, he did fall asleep for a second.

He woke up when he heard Chara attack again, though.

He wasn’t prepared for when they attacked again quickly.

The pain as the knife cut him across the chest was extreme. It was greater than anything (physical, anyways) he had felt before.

As the human walked away and he said his final words, Blue had the strangest sensation of someone hugging him.

When he gave up the fight

A quick decision late in the night

As he felt himself dust and his soul shatter, the world RESET.

Blue woke back up in his bed.

Something was off this time. Something broke inside of him.

He decided to give up.

He didn’t have any hope anymore

When Stretch went to see what was taking his brother so long, all he encountered was a pile of dust toped with a blue bandana.

MergeTale: AU’s are Confusing

Ink and Fresh appear next to Saviour and Core, standing outside Tartalgia, the town covered in blue strings.

“He’s been here a while now” Core plucks on one of the strings. “He’s having some trouble with one of the locals, can’t reach his soul to affect him”

“I can bet who it is” Saviour smirks.

Ink and Fresh look to each other.

“Hey uhm...do we have a plan here?” Ink asks.

“Well, from what Core tells me, you have some experience fighting Error, Ink” Saviour replies.

“I am..more than you could understand” Ink replies.

“So take the lead, what do we do?” Saviour asks.

“Yeah, how do we take down my rad glitch bro?” Fresh finger guns to Ink.

“We don’t. “ Ink smiles. “We get everyone to stop fighting him, make him feel welcomed instead. He’ll run away.”

“That...is so evil” Saviour blinks “i’d feel more comfortable punching him in the face”

“Or we can do that, yeah” Ink shrugs.

“Like, you have a good idea, I’m just uncomfortable with such emotional manipulation” Saviour replies.

“Yeah yeah I get it. “

Saviour takes a step away from Ink. “uhm. Ok let’s just go free this town”

“I’ll wait out here” Core sits on the ground.

“Fair enough” Ink shrugs.

Ink, Fresh, and Saviour walk into the town. At the center, the Tartalgia family hung with strings dangling from the trees. Error stood across from a figure in a brown and red powered suit of armor.

“Agh! Your stupid armor!” the glitches around Error grew worse as his strings failed to reach Kujo’s soul.

The hero grabs the strings and yanks Error forward, punching him in the face and sending him back.

“Hey Zoey!” Saviour yells as they come in.

“Huh?” The hero removes their helmet, revealing it’s a woman, her long black hair flows down her back. “How’d you know it was me?”

“Im my universe Vetster killed you, so by that logic he killed Kujo here.” Saviour shrugs.

“Yeah, right Swap. “ Zoey sighs.

Error groans as he slowly stands to his feet, Zoey quickly puts her helmet back on.

“What the...oh hey Ink” Error stumbles forward. “What are you doing here?”

“What are you?” Ink asks.

“Hey, this isn’t just any AU, this AU isn’t even Undertale related.” Error retorts.

“And yet here we are.” Ink replies, “this sure isn’t Lucidia, or even Dreamers. “

“This is Tenaria.” Saviour steps in, “my world. And you are not welcome here”

“You may be used to the Undertale AU’s where you can easily blow through, but this isn’t Undertale Error. This is much worse” Ink reaches out.

“Hey! I’d like to think we’re pretty good!” Zoey yells.

“No no Zoey we are pretty awful” Saviour pats her shoulder.

Zoey slowly turns and faces Saviour. “Why.”

“Can we get to the part where I kill you guys now?” Error asks.

“Hey my rad error bro!” Fresh is suddenly right next to Error, leaning on his shoulder “you should watch that totes unrad thoughts you got all up in there”

Fresh lowers his glasses, the white soul in his eye trembling as it gets choked by the purple veins of the parasite “you won’t like where they lead my dude”

Error quickly steps aside, making Fresh fall to the floor.

“You got the abomination to join you?” Error asks.

‘I’ll admit, Fresh is weird, but abomination is a bit much” Saviour replies.

“Listen. I’ll go if you promise you’ll keep him here with you.” Error stares at Fresh with disgust and confusion.

A loud hiss echoes through the town.

Error’s eyes glitch out. “CRAP”

Corruption appears in front of Error, punching him quickly through a portal and following closely behind.

“Well…” Ink stands, confused. “I’m gonna go follow...that…” Ink splashes ink on the ground and jumps into it.

“So that went well” Core sits on Fresh’s back.

“Yo my rad core dude!”

“Hey Fresh”

“So, what was that?” Zoey asks.

“Corruption” Saviour reples. “He guards the multiverse now”

“Yup, scary. He took Error to this multiver’s equivalent of the void. Right now its Error, him, Ink, and some star angel.”

“Ah, Galaxes. Nice” Saviour nods in approval.

“So that rad angry kitty is bout to all up and kick some glitch booty?”

“Yup”

“Wack.”

this is april month, autistic people awareness’ month, so i’m here to teach anyone who’d listen a bit about smtg from autistic people.

#(Go)ReadInstead is a movement of the autistic community against autism speaks’ “light it blue” movement. autism speaks promotes the idea that autistic people are sick, compare us to cancer patients, and “light it up blue” to “raise awareness about the Bad Autism we must seek and destroy out of our children”. it is a logic of abuse apologism and ableist conceptions of a neurodivergency that is no illness and neither lethal nor dangerous to anyone, caused by old myths and outdated fears of demons and faeries/changelins.

the character Toriel is not hinted at, coded, or canonically autistic. she is, though, canonically the mother of Chara, a character who i interpret as being autistic. Toriel is far from being the perfect mother, in fact she made huge mistakes that failed her child. however, she is able of wisdom and humility, and i believe that given the chance, she would learn to be an excellent parent to an autistic child, even with their trauma on top of that. that’s why i deem it best to illustrate my point with this caring goat monster.

i don’t know much about good parenting from a carer’s point of view, i’ll admit, because of personal trauma. i do have insights from the child’s position. but first, i’ll quote an helpful fellow, who i will be calling C :

“from experience, I can tell you that the worst thing you can do for you autistic children is to prioritize managing their behavior over raising them in an open minded and loving environment that addresses their needs.

like if you have a kid that moves around a lot to stim and you pull the "quiet hands" bullshit to try to get them to sit down instead of giving them other opportunities to let out energy and teaching them to manage their own movements, for example.

bad parents, they don't care about their kids, they only care about garnering sympathy for themselves because "OH IT'S SO HARD BEING THE PARENT OF A DIFFICULT CHILD”.

well that's some stuff about bad parents but a good parent of an autistic child, or any child for that matter, would be able to not only address their child's needs but also would care enough to make adjustments to themselves and the way they approach a child care if this is something they're totally new to.

though in this day and age, even parents who don't have any autistic family members don't have any right to not know autistic kids and people exist.

basically look at Autism Speaks and do NOTHING that they do.

support groups that only deal with supporting relatives of people with autism and not communicating with autistic people themselves are bad news.

stay far away from any counseling or pediatric resources that treat children showing traits typical of autism as showing "symptoms" or try to determine of kids are "at risk".

you can either help them grow into an environment where they're allowed to achieve their potential for independence and happiness.

or you can suppress them into submission and condition them to not be an inconvenience to you, which is unfortunately what a lot of parents try to do, whether out of malice or ignorance.”

i don’t have much to add, to be honest. i asked for advice and they made a point by point explanation that just did the whole job.

the keyword is also ACCEPTING. not just tolerating. no, fullout, entire acceptance. and never trying to “cure” your kid. because they’re okay, in that aspect. sure, they’ll have a difficult life in a world that doesn’t want to acknowledge them, but by trying to suppress their very nature, you’d just be playing by this world’s rules. that makes you an executioner, simply put, not a saviour or a protector.

reject all movements linked to autism moms. you are no mom or dad or pam of autism. you’re an allistic parent of an autistic child. you do not have a special parent status. you have allistic privilege over your child. use it wisely.

or you’ll get a child like me: actually unable to function properly due to traumatic pushes for me to be all-time allistic passing, an indigo child, having learned self-destructive behaviours to take out the frustration on myself, an extremely bad self-esteem, and anger issues, and a fear and hatred of authority without explanations, and ultimately, a broken adult who loathes their parents more than anyone else in the fucking universe, and disowned them.

you don’t want that. and the only alternative to my outcome of anger because of allistic abusive parenting is a scared, hiding child, who is bound to be a dead child, by suicide, exhaustion or murdered for not being good enough.

because only my anger saved me. taking the path of dehumanizing your offspring can only result in them destroying you, metaphorically, or destroying themselves. no in-between of miraculously not autistic anymore youth.

consider that.

do not just support the autistic people that you can control to make yourself look good, do not think of us as little mindless things to direct according to your allistic narratives. value us all, respect us all and support us all.

Frisk on the Road to Damascus: A Pseudo-Essay on Converting to Undertale

So 664 days after it was released, and 382 days after I purchased it, I finally, finally, finally beat Undertale.

And... I loved it. Controversial opinion: it’s really good.

But it took me a while to love it. Let me explain, because I’m sure y’all are super interested in me doing so.

I had about five false starts playing Undertale, and all five of those false starts was how fucking irritating I found the sound of Flowey and Toriel’s dialogue. I have a hypersensitivity to sound, especially frequencies, and the sound of Flowey and Toriel’s dialogue is... not pleasant, especially at first aural blush. I got used to it when it when I finally powered through it, but if there were any major changes I would make to Undertale it would be better sound controls - being able to cut the audio down on the dialogue by even 25% would make a big difference to it on an accessibility ability level* ** It was Undertale that first ‘inspired’ me to get Tumblr Saviour - first because I didn’t want to be spoiled by a game I heard was good and wanted to play relatively unspoiled, and later because I didn’t want to be reminded of the game I was having so much trouble with.

What was it that made me pick up Undertale long enough to get through it? As usual, it was podcasts (there’s a small paper to be written on how podcasts got me interested in pro wrestling, but that’s a whole other story.) The superlatively good Let Me Tell You About Homestuck podcast relaunched a little over a year back (shoutout to excellent co-hosts @yuri-librarian and @betgirl ), and when I found out I dived back in, and in the process rediscovered my love of Homestuck. Homestuck and I had a falling out during the gigapause and Homosuck - at the time it felt like the webcomic’s author was pissed at his own comic and actively self-sabotaging it, and even though I caught up with the comic before the ending I was still disgruntled with it and not willing to engage with it much.

But listening to LMTYAH re-ignited fandom joy within me - a euphoric Road-To-Damascus re-conversion I can only describe as ‘George Bailey coming back to existence at the end of It’s A Wonderful Life.' I gleefully snatched-up the pesterlogs and clutched them to my chest. I waved cheerfully at [S] Descend and [S] Cascade. “Merry Christmas you old mspaintadventures!” I shouted at the top of my lungs as I pelted through the snow to hug my beloved Beta Kid family again.***

You can’t discuss Homestuck anymore without discussing Undertale, which was so clearly fed by Homestuck, which was in turn fed by Undertale, because media is an incestuous slurry. Part of the issues with coming back to the Homestuck dialectic table is that you can’t ignore that big ol’ bowl of Undertale sitting between the roasted trans-media experiments and the mashed potatoes. If, every time that bowl gets passed around, you put your hands over your ears and and scram ‘LA LA LA LA LA I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT’ then the other guests are going to look at you funny and your nearest neighbour is going to conclude that they’d rather sit through that pompous lecture by the vegan on the other side of them after all.

It’s not a great dining experience, is what I am trying to explain with this increasingly overcooked analogy. I wanted to eat with the rest of the guests - I wanted to watch @revolutionaryduelist’s video on Undertale themes and Homesick themes. I want to suck it up, be an adult, and eat like a goddamn grown-up.

So I grit my teeth, grabbed the bowl, and started shovelling large spoonfuls down my throat. I think this is how grown-ups eat right?

I didn’t like the taste at first. What brought me to Undertax more than anything was the idea of the pacifist run. The games that have this as a legit option are few and far between, and some of them (e.g. Dishonoured) get downright nasty about it. Undertake wasn’t nasty about being helpful, but it didn’t make it easy, either.

Some of you may feel the need to note that ‘the pacifist route isn’t supposed to be easy,’ to which my response would be ‘shove it up your bum you git-gud wankeroos.’ There are two types of ��hard’ in video games - one of challenge, and one of ability. The excellent puzzle game The Witness doesn’t greatly challenge ability (for sighted people, at least) - by and large almost all of its puzzles just involve drawing a line. The Witness is hard because the puzzle are so tortuously, mind-bindingly challenging. By contrast, a platform like VVVVVV doesn’t preset much mental challenge - it barely has anything like a puzzle that I can remember, but in terms of ability it requires lightening-fast reflexes and great timing (Somehow I beat that game -I still don’t know how).

Undertale is not a hard-challenge game, it is a hard-ability game, and I flat-out suck at its bullet hell mechanics. All my frustrations with the game were met at the bullet board - if I could make one other major change to the game it would be slightly improving the speed of the heart cursor. Time and time again I violently cursed because I had just missed getting out of the way of something with a cursor I found sluggish and unresponsive, as though my keyboard was laggy. A poor skill level coupled with what felt like hardware problems made for an increasingly difficult experience, one in which I felt like the game was almost taunting me: “oh, you want to be a good person, huh? Too bad - you lack the skills to be a good person. You’re not going to get through this without resorting to killing, you intrinsically violent, terrible person."

Staying alive through the confrontation with Undyne drained me, and by the time I was on my second iteration of Mettaton being a shitheel I just felt burned-out. The story still felt pretty flat, and wasn’t really drawing me in. The hardest decision I had had to make was at the very beginning of the game - Toriel’s home, and Toriel herself, were so lovely and sweet that I still resented the game for making me have to break her heart. I didn’t want to leave her house, I just wanted to stay and live a nice life with her in the Underground. But no - the game wanted me to have heroic destiny and shit so fine, guess i’ll go back to the surface I don’t have much interest in seeing. Since leaving Toriel’s house all I had wanted to do was return to that tranquility and warmth, and instead I just got more monsters trying to kill me. The stuff with Papyrus had been very funny, but the game still wasn’t sinking its claws into me - it was a quirky but light RPG, funny, but not funny or deep enough for me to understand why a big bowl of it was sitting at the Homestuck dialectic table other that Toby Fox had worked on both things - which seemed like a weak reason to include it. (Remember the Homestuck dialectic table? That didn’t stop being a thing or anything)

So I walked away again and did other things over several weeks, possibly months. I finally came to terms with the fact that my vision is permanently damaged and got myself a Kindle so I could read again. I read a book on the Apollo programme and took another crack at Bleak House. I watched an episode or two of Lucha Underground, got caught up on The Adventure Zone, and went through every post ever posted on @revolutionaryduelist’s Tumblr. I fantasized about buying a new computer. I told myself to watch the Little Witch Academia TV series and forgot every single time - and so on.

And then I watched Car Boys.

Car Boys is one hell of a ride, no pun intended, a strange mishmash of video game fault testing and emergent meta narrative that ends up surprisingly emotional and affecting - and as the credits rolled I made the always unwise decision to wander down into the Youtube comments, where I discovered the fun ‘Car Boys is just like Homestuck’ argument which, natch, led me back to thinking about Homesick and Video Games - and, ultimately, Undertale.

“Fine,” I told myself, “I guess I’ll beat it, at least to finally have one thing in my over-glutted Steam Library I have actually seen-through to completion.”

So last night I booted up my Steam, made the conscious decision to stop trying to get my just-bought 360 controller to work with Sonic Adventures DX via wine (it keeps crashing), and booted up Undertale.

For a while it was just fine again. I don’t like Alphys, even after beating the game: she reminds me of a lot of shitty people I’ve known in my life, and the story uses her lack of self-confidence as sort of a moé defence - ah, look at how cute she is, isn’t that adorable, she feels bad about what she’s done - without ever actually examining that behaviour in any critical detail. Alphys being an adorkable anime fan and her relationship with Undyne are all great character traits - but it doesn’t make her a good person, and the game never truly calls her to the mat in much the same way that it sort of glosses over Asgore having condoned the murder of six other humans (but he comes into the story so late I find him less of a character and more of a symbol.) Alphys gets a whole ‘trip to the dump/romance role-play’ subplot after being revealed to have deliberately ordered a bunch of monsters to at least make a pretence of killing you in order to make herself look like a hero - and that's before you get to go into her basement and learn the really shitty shit she did with dying monsters' souls. I mean Jesus Christ Alphys how come nobody calls you on this!

But I’m getting ahead of myself. I helped Mettaton’s ratings, left him to be patched upped by Alphys, and made my way to the castle walls - and the writing started to get really good. I loved meeting with Sans and his talk about the true nature of EXP and LOVE, loved walking into the throne room for the first time, loved the moment when I realized Toriel was the Queen-in-Exile - coming upon the New House was genuinely moving… but then I reached Ashore, and it wouldn’t let me TALK to him, and I didn’t like having to fight him after a full pacifist run, and also he was really hard.

So I swallowed my pride a little and googled vague hints for ways to make the fight easier. I learned that yeah, I absolutely had to fight him, and then I went and ground Cloud Glasses back and forth to the Temmie Store to unlock the Temmie Armor and earn the cash to stock-up on my beloved Bisicles. So equipped, I went and fought Asgore for the final time, thus beating this game that everyone raved about for reasons I could not understand.

Then the game ended and suddenly started to get really, really, really good. Much like Homestuck in Act 6, Undertale’s starts pushing the boundaries of games themselves, using save files against you and deliberately crashing the game. Omega Flowey is a goddamn nightmare, a visual headache who rails against you and the concept of friendship, and while he was a frustrating fight for the first time I felt like this was less a reflection of my shitty skills and more a deliberate choice of the part of the game to show what monstrous power he wielded.

As I was sent back into the world, I was eager to go find Undyne. I had to look-up where she lived because I had totally forgotten that her house existed - in fact, I had forgotten Papyrus had ever said anything about meeting up at Undyne’s house, so I never befriended her in my original run. The moment Undertale moved from a game I was starting to enjoy to one I knew I loved was the moment Papyrus leapt out Undyne’s window - late in the process to fall in love with a game? Perhaps, but so it was.

Missing Undone the first time through felt so narratively satisfying to me that it wasn’t until writing this that it occurred to me that it was something that didn’t have to have been missed - the run-in with Undone hardly ends on a high-note: after a miserable shield-fight and a whole lot of fleeing you give her a cup of water and she slinks-off into the night. It wasn’t something that exactly screamed ‘She’s Ready For A Friendship Lesson.’ I kept expecting her to show back up somewhere in New Home Castle for Round 2: Redemption Boogaloo, but it never happened. Then Sans got Anubis on my ass, the King of All Monsters got murdered by a flower and my game crashed on purpose - sort of forgot about her no-show appearance.

So there we were: breaking windows, sipping tea, making the worst goddamn spaghetti it’s ever been my misfortune to make**** and having a wonderful time. Other than my general misgivings about Alphys being let-off way too lightly by the narrative*****, after that first reset Undertale was practically a perfect game for me. The ending made me feel mushy and sappy, the epilogue where you get to pace around and talk to just about everyone felt so unbelievably RIGHT - if you want to head out and make one last personal connection with everyone you’ve ever met, you can pretty-much do that. Ben Croshaw wrote quite elegantly that Undertale represents “the triumph of kindness, reminding people of who they were before tragedy twisted them.”****** That kindness is what makes the game so compelling - what makes reading-up on the Genocide route feel so legitimately horrific and transgressive. It’s going to stick in the back of my mind every time I am needlessly rude to someone, overly sarcastic, or just my usual ‘less kind than I wish I was’ self. Homestuck wallets just went on sale today and I immediately bought one and then felt bad for all the Tumblr posts I saw for worthy causes - I SHOULD GIVE UP ALL MY WORLDLY POSSESSIONS TO THE POOR AND GO PREACH THE GOSPEL OF ACTING WITH MERCY as Undertale teaches.

It’s the kindness that will stick with me - and dear God, reading about the Genocide routes makes me nauseated. I’m the guy who claims that this time his Mass Effect play through will be Renegade and then goes 100% paragon again except for being rude to Anderson (because screw that dill weed - oh, geeze, I have failed Undertale again.)

Anyways, long, convoluted, not-very-coherent opinion: Undertale is a good game. Sorry it took me so long to learn that.

*but if we’re going to talk about accessibility in video games we’ll be here all year: an especially big fuck you to all those games who don’t let you change the font size for all of us with really poor eyesight (which is to say essentially all games).

** And what is it with games being embarrassed to have their text dialogue scroll past without some kind of irritating sounds? Undertale at least uses the noise as a form of expanding character identity, but the world is littered with sprite JRPGs who think dialogue is best accompanied by a garbled, repeating beep.

*** Re-experiencing the comic multiple times gave me so many more insights I never used to have. Revisiting Act Six and Homosuck, especially through @betgirl‘s eyes, I found so much to love. Which there is some serious problems in it (The Dancestors and Abuser Gamzee), there’s so much more joy, depth, and thought then I remember. I don’t know if, at the time, with the broken pacing, it was possible to see the shape of the narrative arc that Andrew Hussie was trying to tell - the deconstruction of the nature of storytelling, video games, and the ‘Problem of Mario.’ It’s really good, you guys, and you do yourself a disservice if you have never read it.

**** Undyne is right, by the way: homemade pasta is unquestionably the best and super easy; its only major flaw is that it’s just time-consuming, especially if you’ve got to hand-crank an antique pasta machine to roll it out. KitchenAid sells a pasta roller attachment for their mixer for an amount that justifies a class uprising all on its own.

***** I’m not some weirdo going ALPHYS MUST BE PUNISHED but Alphys should really, you know, actually apologize for the shit she pulled. Yeah, she says ‘I got scared of my amagalgamtions and cowardly didn’t tell their families about it,’ but not being honest about it is the most insignificant issue here. Much more pressing and things like Experimenting On A Human Soul, Actually Making the Amalgams In The First Place, Setting Up A Bunch Of Death Traps So She Could Insert Herself Into Your Life As A Hero. I can forgive Alphys - I think she is a genuinely good person who made misguided and out-right foolish mistakes and should never have had the job she had (I hear Toriel fires her in one ending which fuck yeah Toriel, only one with sense.) Undertake doesn’t need to re-write a damn thing about Alphys - I would just like one more scene in which Alphys admits culpability for the original problem rather than just an aspect of the fallout.

****** And it should be stressed: Alphys deserves kindness (and a good therapist). I don’t want a kangaroo court or anything like that - my issue is with the narrative, not Alphys personally.

Asgore, though… dude kinda murdered six children? Do people talk about that, because they ought to.

8 of the Good Bois in games

Video games have always been a platform onto which a person could fulfill their greatest wishes, sometimes that wish is to be the saviour of the world. Other times that wish will be to be the best at a certain discipline and for some it is to simply travel the world with a good boi at your side. For the uninitiated amongst us a good boi is a doggo or pupper, generally the term is gender neutral, however some people use it solely for male doggos, and can very rarely be a cat. It cannot be understated how important good bois are to any adventurer, they are a source of constant companionship throughout an adventure and are often the only characters that won’t betray you. Unerringly loyal, they are the adventurers best friend. In no particular order 8 of the best good bois in video games.

D-Dog - Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Arguably the most photogenic good boi in this list. Venom Snake’s companion in MGSV D-Dog is the only actual canine member of the private military company Diamond Dogs. D-Dog can be found in the first mission of the game as a puppy. After being sent to your home base via the fulton recovery system D-Dog greets the player with puppy licks and a generally excitable personality. Revolver Ocelot then offers to train your new canine friend as an attack dog while you are on missions, eventually allowing you to bring to him on missions.

D-Dog is an incredibly good boi with a winning smile and a well fitting eye patch. 11/10 would rescue with a balloon extraction system.

Boomer - Far Cry 5

A close second in good looks after D-Dog, Boomer can be found very early on by the player after receiving a distress call from Rae Rae, Boomer’s original owner. Once the player arrives at Rae Rae’s farm they find the family dead and Boomer locked in a cage and surrounded by Peggie cultists taunting our good boi. After clearing out all the enemies around the farm the player then frees Boomer and he offers to lend a paw to the resistance.

Boomer is a Australian Cattle dog mixed with an unknown breed giving him a blue spotted coat and sports an incredibly stylish climbing rope collar his only downside is that Ubisoft won’t let him get into your car with you. 13/10 Spotted spotting dog #letboomerrideshotgun

Annoying dog - Undertale

Simply known as Annoying Dog in the game files and by most of the community this good boi is supposed to be an in game representation of Toby Fox, according to Toby himself. The characters sprite either represents a Samoyed or a Pomeranian, there is debate over this as in the demo of the game Annoying dog is represented by spr_tinypomwalk and snd_pombark however the sprite looks closer to a Samoyed due to its pointed ears and tail.

Regardless of the breed of this wonderful boi he will appear during the Papyrus boss fight to munch on Papyrus’s ‘special’ bone before being shoo’d away. Despite being dubbed Annoying this good pupper continues about his life with gusto, something we can all appreciate in life. 11/10 amour spécifique pour la vie

Dogmeat

Dogmeat is a recurring companion throughout the Fallout games, appearing in Fallouts 1 through 4 meaning the only games he doesn’t appear in are Tactics, Van Buren, Brotherhood of Steel and New Vegas. In Fallout 1 and 2 Dogmeat is a mut found terroising an old man in Junktown, distracting him for the old man allows the player to recruit our good boi as a companion. In Fallout 3 he is a cattle dog and is found in the scrapyard area of the Capital Wasteland fighting Raiders, helping him defeat the raiders allows him to be recruited. Finally in Fallout 4 Dogmeat is a german shepherd, a highly loyal species of good boi who will love the player unconditionally, and most importantly is set as essential in the game’s code meaning he can’t die. 13/10 Immortal, omnipresent good boi guardian

Sif - Dark Souls

The only good boi on the list that can’t be a player companion. Sif, also known as the Great Grey Wolf, is the companion of the Artorias the Abyss walker in the first Dark Souls game. While Sif is actually a wolf, that makes them a proto dog. Artorias and Sif would fight against the monsters of the Abyss together. Artorius eventually sacrificed himself to save Sif, and in return Sif guards his grave, making this good boi the most loyal on the list. Unfortunately to progress through the game the player must fight and kill Sif as one of the games boss fights.

14/10 Fights with a greatsword, gives a great sense of regret when fighting.

Timber - Far Cry: New Dawn

Not much is known about Timber, the good boi companion in the upcoming Far Cry: New Dawn. What we do know however, is that he’s a Shiba Inu, this means one important thing. Timber has the potential to revive the doge meme in the post apocalypse. Additionally it has been noted that Timber, as well as all other animal companions will be able to ride shotgun with you. 12/10 much wow.

UT ramblings. undyne + monster politics

most people don’t seem to appreciate undyne the same way that they appreciate sans or pap etc. (I could go on for hours about how much the UT fanbase is far far faaar to focussed on sans but that’s not really relevant...) So i just wanted to bring up all the facts because most people don’t really realise that ALL the main characters of undertale are extremely 3 dimensional with backstory and depth and purpose and motivations and relationships and dreams. A lot of stories/art i see of undyne just focusses on her aggression, her over-enthusiasm or her relationship with Alphys, but she’s more than just some trope.

So i guess i’ll just start with the generic stuff and get more detailed as i go.

Hope for monsterkind

Undyne is a monster (gasp! never would’ve guessed that one would ya?) and so she is trapped underground with the rest of monster-kind underground. The sneaky thing about Undertale is it’s very good at giving us absolutely noooo reference points to infer the time of various events in it’s history (damn you Toby Fox for your sneakily vague ways) but the common conception i’ve encountered within the fanbase is that she was either born underground and as such has never seen the surface or that atleast she was really young when it happened.

Now this is important: to her getting out of the underground isn’t a lamenting about what has been lost, because she doesn’t have many/any memories to hold it towards, they’re all just stories to her. What drives her wanting to leave is little to nothing about leaving herself but providing hope for the monsters of the underground.

Backstory history stuff:

Monsters you can talk to from all corners of the game make it clear that they are actually struggling a great deal because of their situation with problems such as dreariness, overcrowding and lack of sunlight. They say that most make jokes and such to try and ignore the fact that there’s a lot to make them lose hope. Hope in leaving, hope in their situation in life improving, hope for there being any purpose to monster-kind existing at all.

A part of this despair is mostly from their royal dramas (namely Chara’s plan backfiring :P).

The loss of their royalty’s future heir, Asriel, to humans of all people after trying to make things right for them re-iterates just how much they are, even in this state, completely at their mercy. It emphasises how futile fighting it is - even if they do make it to the surface. Not to mention how knowing that their leader has lost his next-in-line would affect political confidence of the kingdom.

What makes matters worse is that Chara (yes. I’m using the true name to refer to the first human, it makes logical sense within lore to select the name most endorsed by the primary material. deal with it) was also a variable within the state of the people at this time. With the arrival of this human and the king and queens actions at making peace and welcoming them, Chara likely symbolised the first step in making peace with humanity - proof that monsters and humans could co-exist in harmony. With their death coupled with the involvement of humanity with Asriel’s actions to peacefully mourn them, it crushes all the ideals that came with that. Asgore, in response to the deaths, declared war on humans which would set the ground for monster-kind’s bias against them.

We all know how Toriel responds to Asgore’s actions. As people who play the game, the idea of her fleeing to the ruins and locking herself there makes perfect sense, but to everyone else at the time all they know is that their queen just disappeared one day. There might’ve been rumours about how she had been arguing with Asgore, how their marriage had begun to fail after losing their child, but the general public would just see it as their weakened royalty becoming even more so at their hour of need.

(ok... back to what i was actually talking about)

Anyway, Undyne is absolutely crucial to stopping them from losing hope. To put it simply, she inspires them. In a time when there are hundreds of reasons to hate life, and the only ones doing ok are either too ignorant to understand the problem or are simply pretending that they don’t exist, she is the figurehead for change. She takes action. Unlike their king who, for as a kind a person as he is, feels reluctant to take an assertive stance on the attack (opting instead to just sit around and wait for the humans to come to him, hoping they never will, like toriel put it) Undyne provides ways that monsters can be helpful NOW.

Many call her the hero of the Underground - and for good reason. Her passion is infectious, it inspires others and for the first time in a long time (again, don’t know how long though because TIMELINE). She makes them think it’s actually possible, like a future on the surface is within their reach. Afterall, Asgore already has 6 souls, all they need is one. She makes it sound so simple, so possible. It doesn’t hurt that she’s the most capable fighter the Underground’s seen in a while either (excluding Asgore obviously) which makes them feel powerful for once.

In short, Undyne is single handedly bringing momentum and hope back to the underground. Because of her the Underground at last is in a position to take back the surface and they feel empowered. And she’s not bearing it alone either, she’s bringing every lasts monster who wants to help with her, inspiring the masses to action.

What drives her (sorta linked to last one)

From a phone calls you can make in the echo flower rooms, we learn that she has heard the personal wishes of many monsters made to echo flowers all united in their desire to leave this place. I spoke a bit before about how it’s unlikely she has much experience with the surface herself. She’s doing this because she cares about others. What drives her is the dreams and determination of everyone she knows and cares about.

How awesome is that?! I mean, that concept alone should make her one of the most respected people in the game. Compared to Sans (and i’m not hating here, Sans is awesome too) who fights you because there’s absolutely no other options left, to let you pass would be to mean everything be deleted forever (i mean, how could you NOT fight at that point, he had nothing to lose); Undyne’s reasoning requires commitment, passion, energy, devotion! This isn’t something she had to do. This is the accumulation of all her compassion for the monsters and her bravery to stand for change. She’s doing this for the ones she loves, the ones she hates, EVERYONE. She’s doing this for her people, for Asgore, for the sake of monsterkind! NGGGAHHHHHH!!!! (sorry, got a bit carried away there)

Representing the people

Something that really resonates in the undertones of the game through her story arc is the responsibility she bears. She is the representative of the people, the hero, a role model to the younger ones and a saviour for the older ones. Everyone is following her because of her passion to the cause. She needs to be strong, to show just how committed she is.

Something that really shows in her character is how much she cares about the people who depend in her. She sees herself as someone who needs to meet that standard. Fortunately for her, she’s basically perfect for the job, being driven is who she is. She loves it, she loves the stakes, the fighting. The energy she brings to the table comes naturally for her, she’s a natural leader. Truly, she just bears the expectations of monsters like a real champ.

For an added bonus though, calling her in the room behind the waterfall shows she takes breaks too :) “When i feel like relaxing, i always take a break there. Which means NEVER!! I hate relaxing! I LOVE being ANGRY and STRESSED OUT! Just kidding.”

I like to think that Monster Kid kinda is an analogy for all the people she’s fighting for in the game. She’s his role model, his idol. He wants to be just like her when he grows up, even though he has no arms. The kid has no arms!!! And she still makes him feel like he can take on the world! Isn’t that just so inspiring? And what does she do when he gets in the way of fighting you? She takes him aside to protect him. She put the safety of a kid she barely knows before the epic fight she’s been dreaming of, the final showdown that will finish this once and for all. A lesser person would have just dismissed him and fought you anyway. But she’s not like that. Because she CARES. Extending the analogy even further, MK is an innocent, he just wants to be friends with you. And this confuses and annoys Undyne. Because everything she does is for them. Don’t they WANT her to break the barrier? That’s where a lot of her anger comes in about your ”goody two shoes schtick” in her fight.

Can i also point out that when you kill monsters in Snowdin, she remembers them? She lists them by name, defends their intentions and fights you to avenge them? How noble is that!

Determination!?

I’m still always flabbergasted that she actually USED determination. I mean, not even sans did that. Her cause meant so much to her, she had with her the support and hearts and dreams of so many people that it literally filled her with determination. For the sake of all monsters she refuses to even DIE! And when she starts to melt, her form physically incapable of handling the powers she’s meddling with, SHE STILL PRESSES ON. TO THE VERY LAST ATTACK SHE FIGHTS!

Just... just take a moment to think that through.

THERE’S MORE TO HER THAN BEING A HERO

I can see why people find her drive very two dimensional. Even with all the caring stuff behind it, which makes it more meaningful, she still comes off as very cliche protagonist. Firstly, she’s supposed to be like that, it’s ironic because she’s like a real life anime hero just like she idolises in Alphys’ um... *cough* history books. She’s sincere, it’s a fundamental character trait. She’s true to her convictions and when she wants something she takes action, some people are just like that. She has passion and she refuses to hold that back. Cooking with her definitely shows you that haha.

But she wasn’t always so popular. Can i remind people that, in true anime fashion, she ALSO has a tragic backstory that she refuses to let hold her back??? It’s actually mentioned a few times in the game but you never really notice it. Undyne is scary. Under any other circumstance, where she didn’t stand up to take the role and there was reason to admire her, everyone was too scared to be around her. That energy that everyone finds endearing made people frightened. She didn’t have many friends growing up because all the kids were to scared of the overly-aggressive fish monster. She says she doesn’t care about popular people to papyrus. It’s because, if things hadn’t turned out like they did, she too would be unpopular. She was alone, a misfit, strong and weird.

For me that really changes how i look at her. When she fights for the underground, she’s fighting for the people that used to be afraid of her. Her energy, the thing that left her ostracised, is the hope of everyone. I like to also reflect on how nice it is that she can fill this role too, it sounds just like a TV show for the strange one to rise up and be all that is good regardless. It’s also nice how she isn’t resentful of it. She still cares about the people as a whole and about each and every individual that makes it up.

Okay, now the alphys stuff

So i find the way that her and Alphys meet so enjoyable to look into. It’s heavily implied that Alphys has at times been suicidal (and there’s even suggestion to her taking this action in some of the neutral routes). Undyne meets her at the edge of a waterfall into the abyss and listens to talk to her for hours about the theories about what’s at the bottom. This is SO consistent with her character, of course she’d be the perfect kind of person to talk to when Alphys is like that. Undyne’s kindness shines through again. Also, the way that Alphys can go on for hours is just as driven as Undyne’s drive for other things. The parallels are what she admires about her.

It’s also cute the little things you notice that suggest she’s got a crush too. Normally Alphys’ side of the affection is what we notice but the tiny things... Like how a monster at Grillby’s knew undyne was off limits because she had a crush on someone. And how undyne would call alphys about the weather when there literally isn’t a sky. And how undyne corrected her statements about no nerds being allowed in her room. The water cooler being added in also shows that Undyne visited the lab often enough for Alphys to get concerned and install it - Undyne, a fish used to cold wet climates, literally went to a place filled with dry fiery rocks to see her.

Another thing i find fascinating about the pair is that they are quite similar actually. Both feel the need to bear responsibility in freeing monsters from the underground and face the pressure of wanting to meet people expectations. In a way, Alphys creating Mettaton has provided a similar effort to monster’s attitude as Undyne. Alphys researching determination is her way of fighting the barrier the same way Undyne leading the royal guard is. The difference obviously comes in the degree of confidence the two have, Alphys is clearly very insecure and her failure with the DT experiments only make it worse for her.

Papyrus

Sigh, do i even need to explain this one? She admired Pap’s dedication, respects him as a person and fighter and doesn’t let him join the royal guard because she worries about him which is really sweet. Instead of just flat out saying no, she even goes the extra mile of encouraging his other hobbies and entertaining his dreams. They’re good friends.

Random extras

She trained under Asgore and respects him a lot (but we already know all about that if from the cooking date). She was committed to fighting him again and again until she could finally beat him and pacifist Frisk reminds her of him. Sweet.

She plays piano. Can i point out that her fight is one of the few with straight up piano in the soundtrack? It’s a cool little easter egg and i can’t help but imagine her practising her battle music. It also ties in with the ancient artefact puzzle, which Undyne funnily enough made (a nice little extra :) )
