Undertale Beginnings/Underbound

does anyone remember this obscure ass undertale prequel toby took down for some reason? you played as like some human that looked a lot like frisk named fucking squeezo and they had to go underground and heal the planet or something. it had the same battle system as undertale except it had a spell option and the spells were all music themed. the craziest part was that the antagonist was a character named face who died at the end and was implied to be the previous incarnation of asriel. im pretty sure not many people remember undertale beginnings atp but i hope it gets more known because the lore was definitely something

Undertale's first incarnation.

On October 29, 2012, a user on starmen.net by the name of "MrTenda" would create a shitpost thread talking about an Earthbound ROM hack he's creating called "UnderBound"..

Scrolling down a bit, you may see a familiar face! That's right, It's Toby Fox!! This is, as far as I can tell, the first look at Undertale EVER posted on the internet.

It seems Frisk originally had black hair, and there were no hints as to Flowey's evil nature.. Toby also mentions Flowey is a reincarnation of "FACE" which was a character mentioned in the original post, but also draws similarities to the NES Godzilla Creepypasta's "FACE", which inspired some of Flowey's looks.

(A direct comparison of sprites) Toby Fox citing Flowey as a "reincarnation" here is also brilliant (but likely unintentional) foreshadowing!!

hiya molly! i was watching your stream and at the end of it you pulled up that one starmen.net post where toby showed off undertale for the first time? just wanted to make sure you knew it was a joke and there is unfortunately no underbound 1 or step cousin squeezo

afaik toby was just being silly about announcing a new project to a group of friend

oh yeah, i figured out shortly after that it was just Jokes on his part, which doesn't surprise me now tbh but i suppose 5 hours of streaming and the rush of being live in front of a bunch of people made me a lil slow in that regard JKLDGHJKLDHG thanku though for letting me know either way, it does help to have some clarification! though it is tragic that we will never know a reality in which step cousin squeezo exists

Was looking at undertale's development timeline, and apparently this is the first known public appearance of anything related to undertale: a joke post in an earthbound romhacking forum thread

There's so many in-jokes going on that it's kind of hard to parse, but the gist seems to be the op of the thread going "I'm working on a romhack called UnderBound--very original, do not steal ;)" [posts screenshots pulled directly from earthbound and clumsily recolored], and Toby responding with "here's my very real sequel to your very real romhack: UnderBound 2, starring Flowey and Young Androgynous Person"

That ask about other projects reminds me, didn't the team have at least one other (now abandoned) project going? I'm certain it wasn't something where what it was wasn't released to the public, I just can't remember what it was.

Back around 2016, we had another project called Underbound that never made it too far in development. It was pretty much an Undertale x Earthbound crossover project, with original protagonists. It was ultimately cancelled, though our former team leader @granpris has pretty much re-imagined the project in her spare time. I can’t remember the name, though...
