What part of the Fallout setting and themes would you want to focus on if you got to decide on the direction of a new game?
Observation that's been boiling in the back of my head since forever is that out of all the games in a series where the tagline is that War Never Changes, New Vegas is about war to an extent that the other games never really approach. Really the only example of a traditional ground war between peer states or something akin, with articulated battle lines, points of contention, supply chain issues and the like. Fallouts 1 and 2 get at least a partial pass because they're set before humanity's redeveloped the capacity for state on state violence; 3 and 4 are trying to be about Wars but kind of flail their arms on that front, 4 in particular. Regardless I want more of New Vegas's energy on this front.

If I had a nickel for every country where military service is compulsory for men and my favourite musicians are from there, I would have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened two times.

Moon Eyes
AO3
A/N: This one is all about mythology, one of my biggest special interests! If anything is wrong with the myths, let me know and I will fix it.
———
“I was wondering…do Heathens have any stories about the moon?”
Aegis and Erenville were out on a late-night picnic, watching the stars. As talk had come around to mythology, he was curious about Heathenry, the traditional faith of Kievan Rus. It was a faith that worshipped death itself, with Marena, the goddess of death and night, as their supreme deity. It was a peculiar faith, but that just made it more interesting.
“The moon?” Aegis flopped onto her back and stared up at the sky. “In the beginning, there was no moon, and no stars. When the sun fell, darkness reigned. Marena viewed this as a problem, so after Veles raised her to godhood, she went to the ocean shore and picked up as many pebbles as she could. She threw them into the night sky to make the stars. Later, she found a large boulder, and heaved it into the sky to make the moon. She decreed these creations of hers to be sacred, and when night falls, it is said that Marena is watching over you.”
“Don’t most people get married at night because of that?” Erenville asked, laying down beside her.
“Yep. It’s also when witches teach other witches the craft. It all has to be done at night, per Marena’s decree.”
“That’s interesting, but I thought it would be more…substantial,” he commented carefully, not wanting to offend her.
“Eh, it’s fine. Most of the really good stuff happened before Marena’s ascension. Okeanid myth — that was a people around during the unsundered era — doesn’t say much either, just that Selene was the goddess of the moon, and some other gods, like Phoebe and Artemis, had some associations with it too. The most they said is that Selene would ride across the sky almost every night in her silver chariot — the only time she didn’t was during the new moon. Oh, right —“ she sat up suddenly “ — and it was believed that lunar eclipses were caused by witches, who brought the moon down with spells.”
“I wish I could have met the Okeanids. They sound fascinating,” he noted.
“Their myths were incredible. Varangian myths aren’t anything to sneeze at, either. But enough about them,” she said suddenly, twisting her body so she was lying on her side facing him. “You mentioned that Tural has a bunch of cultures and stories. What do they say about the moon?”
Erenville pursed his lips as he thought long and hard about the stories he’d heard over his time exploring Tural. He was more of a wildlife person than a history expert, but one of the things he’d learned early on was that everything was connected somehow. Stories about the maize, alpacas, the najool, the rroneek, all of it told how people understood the world around them, how they thought the world worked. Before he could think of his own, his mind went to a myth found in the forests of Y’ak Tel.
“In some parts of Yok Tural, they believe in a goddess called Cōātlīcue, goddess of the earth, mother of the sun, moon, and stars,” he started, glancing at her. “One day, as she was sweeping her temple, a ball of feathers fell on her, and she suddenly fell pregnant. Her daughter, Coyolxāuhqui, was angry about this, believing her mother had dishonored her children, so she led her many brothers, four hundred of them in all, to attack Cōātlīcue and kill her. At the last moment, her son Huītzilōpōchtli sprang out of her womb, fully grown and armed, and killed Coyolxāuhqui and their brothers. He threw his brothers into the sky where they became stars, then dismembered his sister and threw her decapitated head into the night sky, where it became the moon, so that their mother would find comfort in seeing some part of her daughter every day.”
Aegis, captivated, let out a low whistle. “Everything about that was brutal,” she observed.
“Well, some of those cultures are also known for human sacrifice by ripping people’s hearts out or throwing them into cenotes, so I think it tracks,” he replied wryly.
Aegis chuckled. “What about the Shetona? You haven’t told me anything about them yet.”
Erenville thought back to all the stories his mother had told him. He didn’t think about them often or tell them to most people…but Aegis wasn’t most people.
“In the beginning, when the Shetona came up from the underworld, there was no sun or moon,” he started slowly. “There was no light, only darkness. One day, the people came across a man with a fire, called Skeleton, and he gave them food and the means to make fires of their own. But the people wanted more light, one that required no wood and would never burn out. So the Great Chiefs, when they met with Skeleton, decided to make a moon like they had in the underworld.
“The Great Chiefs took a rroneek hide and cut out a large circle, stretched it over a wooden hoop, then painted it all in white, with the edge in black, then attached a square cloth to it. When they were done, they selected a young man to stand on the disk. They picked up the cloth and swung it back and forth while singing a magic song. Finally, with a mighty heave, they threw the disk into the sky. It rose higher and higher, and the land brighter and brighter, until the moon was floating in the night sky, shining down on everyone below.
“But the moon’s light was dim, and not enough for the people, so they then took a cloth and painted it in copper. They painted eyes and a mouth, then fashioned two rings of maize husks and put them on the front and back. Into the husks they stuck a string of red hair and a circle of eagle feathers. Once again, they chose a man to stand on the cloth, and again they swung the cloth back and forth until they threw them into the sky as well. It rose higher and higher until it too settled into the sky, and it became the big beautiful sun.”
Aegis had laid down there and listened to him, entranced by his voice and his tale, and waited for him to continue. When he didn’t, she sat up and gazed at him in wonder. “That’s a beautiful story,” she breathed with a big smile. “You’re an amazing storyteller, Erenville.”
A pleasant warmth crept into his cheeks, and he looked away and bit his lip to hide his happily shocked smile. Once he mastered himself, he twisted his body to lay on his side facing her. “You know something?”
“Hmm?”
“Your eyes…with the limbal rings glowing…they look like the moon,” he murmured, reaching over and stroking her cheekbone.
“Yours look like the sun,” she whispered back, nudging his hand.
“Oh, the moon and the sun, eh? That must mean we’re meant for each other.”
Aegis bit her lip to keep from giggling.

Remember my first webcomic, Under the Aegis?
It's now up on Tapas! ✨ Updates Tuesdays & Fridays.
Why, you ask? After all this time?
Well, since it was contract work with Webtoon, and Webtoon is making profits from it (and ad money) which I don't see a cent of, plus I have no control over the series due to it being a Webtoon product so I can't change it or move it, I decided to make a backup on Tapas.
I signed on with Webtoon in 2015 and they published UtA until it ended in 2017. They had exclusive e-publishing rights until 2020 (which was when I started to work on UtA ebooks to sell). I stopped getting paid in 2017, but UtA has been profitable for WT ever since.
I decided to make another home for UtA on Tapas, so that folks could enjoy it and reread it there, and where I had more control over publishing! It feels nice to organise it the way I want, and I'm feeling all my old feelings about my characters again 🥺
Just checking it out there and/or sharing already helps bunches 🙏🏼
Thank you!

💥 / for jiaoqiu and chenhua! ❤️
Send 💥 for a headcanon I’ve always wanted to talk about. @memovia
Tumblr media
Jiaoqiu's childhood home is a small village tucked away in the mountains bordering Rainsoar Lake, and as a young boy, he would often venture down towards the lake shore to not only forage for wild plants, fungi, and herbs, but to also take a swim in its cool waters during hotter days. Afterwards, he'd shake out the water from his hair and fur, slip on the herb basket filled to the brim with the ingredients he harvested, and make his way through the forest path back towards his village, where he would then set aside some of the spoils so they could be sold during the next market day. The rest would be for his family's use.

The Third Abundance War was... a very tense time for Chenhua, to say the least. The Artisanship Commission had practically worked overtime to meet the demands of the ongoing conflict, with weapons and starskiffs being manufactured and sent out far more frequently than ever before in her career. It was the closest that the threat of the Abominations of Abundance had been to her home, and though the Alliance was ultimately victorious at the end, it had still cost the lives of so many. Chenhua had not lost anyone close to her during the war, but her heart still felt heavy for a time in the aftermath of it all, and while she's thankful that the Luofu has been living in relative peace and safety for many centuries due to Jing Yuan's leadership, sometimes she wishes that they didn't have to fight at all. She knows that can't happen until the abominations are eradicated, however --something she's fully aware will more than likely not happen in her lifetime.
