opening this with the obligatory "AUs are fun" and "you can do whatever you want forever" i'm talking about the canon relationship and characterization vs a very common fanon. so without further ado i present:

Dimple Was A Friend: A Friendship Manifesto

the fanon in question is "Dimple as Mob's Dad/Uncle figure". in general i'm tired of the fandomized “Found Family” but in this particular case it totally fucks over an entire series spanning character arc and removes the interesting nuance from Dimple and Mob's relationship.

one of Dimple's big hang-ups is that he thinks all of his relationships have to be hierarchical in some way, but broccoli arc’s whole thing is that he actually wants someone to respect and acknowledged him as an equal.

normal humans can't see spirits at best and are terrified of them at worst. most other spirits we see have degraded to mindless monsters. espers more or less treat spirits as animals, specifically as pests or pets. spirits are dehumanized to the point that Matsuo doesn't seen any problem treating Human Man Mogami like a particularly unruly pet. so if Dimple can't be treated like an equal then he can at least try putting himself at the top of the food chain. no one respects him as a person, so he'll make them respect him.

Mob is in a very special place re: attitudes towards spirits off the bat. he's grown up with the supernatural as a normal part of life and sees no significant difference between humans and spirits. at first is doesn't seen like he's treating Dimple with any sort of respect, but in retrospect it's exactly the sort of thing Dimple wants. Mob doesn't treat him like a pest, he treats Dimple like an annoying guy that's following him around. even as their friendship develops Mob doesn't treat Dimple as though he's become useful, he trusts Dimple like he would Reigen or Ritsu or any other friend in a dangerous situation.

but despite his newfound Friendship Emotions Dimple still hasn't broken out of his old mindset. there must be an inherit hierarchy to the world, and while he can't afford to lose his spot, maybe he can trust someone to be by his side.

Dimple himself repeatedly states in the broccoli arc he wants them to become co-cult leaders. he doesn't want Mob to join him as a subordinate or apprentice or anything like that, he want's Mob to join him as an equal. father/son and uncle/nephew relationships are inherently hierarchical! that doesn't necessary make them bad, but it's not want Dimple wants.

if we accept that Dimple is a father/uncle figure to Mob then the broccoli arc concludes with Dimple realizing he doesn’t want authority over people in a malicious way, he wants authority in a nurturing way. not only is that still an unequal relationship, nurturing is definitely not a word that comes to mind when discussing Dimple.

it also means we must accept that Mob sees Dimple as some kind of authority figure which is simply not true. Mob never treats him with that elevated level of respect and even gets confused that Dimple thinks their relationship is weighted in one way or the other. all in all the father/uncle interpretation is straight up out of character for both of them and downplays mp100’s emphasis on friendship.

and then it creates a second problem. since Mob & Dimple have been shoved into the Family Box that means by order of elimination Reigen is Dimple’s closest friend (or more commonly romantic partner) compared to Mob for most of the mange Reigen doesn't really treat Dimple with the same human-to-human attitude. he frequently makes jokes about Dimple being a like pet, which to Reigen is just normal snark, but probably hits Dimple harder than he realizes for reasons stated at the start.

hell during the separation arc Dimple took Mob’s side and was perfectly fine ditching Reigen even tho he didn’t really have to. he was even mean about it!

during this short exchange they're both antagonizing each other but i feel like it's notable Dimple only leaves after Reigen starts shit talking Mob. Reigen is right that Mob won't use his powers in normal day to day life and Dimple knows he's right. Dimple's been following Mob around this whole time watching life a perfectly average life. and then Reigen, no psychic defenses, charismatic guy with an established following, offers Dimple join him! oh boy is that an easy situation to take advantage of!! (and also of an example of how Dimple's started to lose sight of his "villainous schemes", but that's a whole other tangent lol)

Dimple only reaccepts Reigen into his social circle after witnessing him and Mob reconcile. by downplaying Mob and Dimple’s friendship Reigen becomes Dimple’s closest connection by default which is just not true for most of the manga, but, and i'm about to have a grouchy aromantic moment here, most people are fine with it because Shipping. now Reigen and Dimple can be Mob’s dads together :]

the power of Reigen being a fan favorite typically causes people to elevate him, sometimes even in scenarios he's not all that involved in, but please allow me to point out how amatonormativity plays into this particular reading 😒 Dimple Is Mob's Dad/Uncle doesn't always go hand in hand with ekurei of course, but i see it happen often enough to be a trend. even though a family-esque relationship should logically still emphasize their personal bond just as much as a platonic one, in this case it still typically comes with shipping, and by extension Reigen, tacked onto it.

mean aro moment over. if it sounded like i'm dissing ekurei i promise i'm not! i like it just as much as the next guy! it's just that, like all ships in every fandom, sometimes it gets pushed to the detriment of other relationships and even characterization.

but anyways. in closing: guys. they literally call each other friends.

God I want her real dad to pass away so bad I dont care about him at all and I really hate rich people. But anyways you're right.. Initially I couldn't really see these two as father/daughter because I'll be very honest Reigen would be considered pretty irresponsible if he were a father (that's if I think of his relationship with Mob) so I always saw him as an older brother or an uncle if I had to think of family dynamics. But if he were a girl dad then I'm on board with the idea of him being a father or guardian, I think he needs a daughter in his life.

And you also mentioned Minori being troubled, I actually headcanon both Minori and Reigen to have BPD (Im sorry but why else would the separation arc happen like that if Reigen didnt have any symptoms) I also remember a friend of mine made a thread on twitter about Reigen and BPD I really wish I could find it again it was really good.. anyways I do think these two are troubled to a different degree, I think their dependency on external validation is a shared trait even if it manifests very differently, so they could find common ground there. Reigen being a child psychologist is also a good idea in general, I think if he switched to a job where he gets to work with children like being a teacher for example then he would be happier.

Serizawa Kaguya has come to stay with his (very distant) uncle in order to get a grip on his unpredictable psychic powers. His friend Reigen Arataka tagged along and, as he is wont to do, is rating for a mystery to solve or something paranormal to discover.

When the two young ones accidentally tear open an old hole in reality, Ritsu gets his brother back and Arataka gets the mystery he wanted.

It's a pity it doesn't stop there. It's a pity they let something else out too, and it's not as nice as Shigeo.

And it's got big plans for this realm. Big plans indeed.

Talking about my ageswap au for mp100 TW for suicide!!

I feel like grown Ritsu in this au would be angry and generally a jerk - he only gets away with running a Spirit Exorcism Business because for some reason people that get to close to him spontaneously gain the ability to see spirits, curses and auras. He's actually The weakest natural psychic, he just can't tell because he almost never has to rely on his power alone.

Mob killed himself at 14 after years of trying to manage his powers with no master to help him or give him a place where he really belonged. There isn't really a tipping point, he just comes to understand that he's not happy to be alive, no one else is either, and dying would mean The Thing from The Incident dies with him. He follows Ritsu around as a ghost because that's all Mob really has a desire to do - this leads to him constantly leaking his energy into the area around him as he unconsciously absorbs it (can't have a psychic overload if you're a psychic rain cycle) so not only to people around him (and Ritsu because he Never leaves Ritsu) get tiny crumbs of psychic energy, but Ritsu also can't Really tell when Mob pours power into him to make his attacks stronger (which he does all the time because Ritsu isn't strong enough to exorcise spirits)

Reigen at age 10 ended up near Ritsu, seeing Mob and then just following them until Ritsu started yelling at him. Reigen sees Mob dip to hide out of Ritsu's sight and takes a chance. Asks if Ritsu can see ghosts too, to which Ritsu says that yes, he can, and he has a business for it. Reigen ends up guilting Ritsu into letting him go to the office Once (Mob used to be outcast for seeing ghosts too and look what happened to him). Reigen goes in covered in bruises and bandages because he got excited and told kids at school he saw ghosts, and Ritsu again is like 'this is how it started, this is why Nii-san died - what if I could help?' And Reigen takes full advantage, saying he's a very powerful psychic (like a liar) and then becoming The Receptionist. Ritsu pays him exact minimum wage to the minute and only when he goes out on a job because when he's in the office he has no responsibilities and is therefore being babysat.

Ekubo is a human, a year older than Reigen and a giant jerk that speaks four languages (at least). He told Reigen they were friends and didn't leave him alone since (he was trying to get to Mob) and then makes fun of Ritsu constantly (to get to Mob) all so he can figure out why Mob is so powerful and eventually eat him. This plan changes when Teruki - a TV psychic - comes to his house (which is technically an abandoned house, he lives there with a dozen or so ghosts that have raised him for as long as he can remember [one of his uncles said there were more before Mogami came, Mogami was like the boogie man for Ekubo]) He only calls for help when he figures out he absolutely can't win himself (he texts Reigen to bring Mob, they bring Ritsu as their emotional support grown man)

When Ritsu, Reigen and Mob get there, Ekubo has a giant barrier around the whole house full of ghosts, and Teru's holding the kid against it by the neck just hissing 'drop the barrier' over and over. His camera crew is knocked away somewhere, now he just wants to win against this kid. Ekubo has had the shit kicked out of him, but the barrier is still there. Ritsu instantly goes to wrip Teruki away, and Teruki takes an adult esper as an invitation to go ham - well, at least until Mob comes out in the open for the first time to stop those two because You Don't use psychic powers on another person. Teruki ends up using Ritsu, Reigen and Ekubo as leverage because he can't figure out how to hurt Mob. Mob can't keep up with the power while he's in his leaky spirit form so he has to take a human form to hold and control his energy better (like Ekubo in canon, except Mob looks like Mob because he remembers being human).

Teruki learns, Reigen and Ekubo come to terms with the dead kid they've been talking to, Ritsu cries for a Long time, they all get invited in for tea by one of Ekubo's many ghost parents.

He later filed for adoption of the 7-year-old. His husband, Teruki Kageyama, was on-board. Mura-Chan’s had knife PTSD ever since. Slicing is now done either out of their sight, or with just psychic powers. And Yelling is also triggering.

Will trigger a barrier at even the slightest hint of distress or danger, even false alarms!

Been frantically trying to shift around stuff because I wanted to play games on my phone but it unfortunately has the memory capacity of a potato so I've been looking through my notes app in search of things that could be deleted. Here's some ideas that have cursed my ever waking hours so now I foist the burden onto you!

A restaurant called "Subversion" that aims to do just that to your expectations. Food that looks all leafy and green so you'd expect a savory vegetable type deal? Nope you blue raspberry flavor. Or how about a large dessert covered in some sort of icing and now the waiter is bringing out a torch? So is it something like Baked Alaska mayhaps? No, the "icing" melts away to reveal it’s a steak. And the deal isn't limited to the food, oh no. You go in thinking it’s gotta be some fancy high end place but it looks like just a mom and pop cluttered shop. Then you get led through a door and suddenly faced with the most ostentatious place you’ve ever seen. Then the bartender gestures for you to follow them behind the counter and suddenly you're led through a trapdoor in floor. You now think you’re outside but suddenly a a door opens from behind a pile of trash bags against the back wall and then suddenly you’re in another version of the mom & pop store. The price is reasonable but you're the server now. This is your home now, you can never leave.

He gets pulled in again via Sode no Shirayuki and eventually gets Zanpakugo (Zanpakuto!Ichigo) in. Many cryptic memes x2 because they're both time traveling millennials. Of course they meme in various worrysome and increasingly unhinged ways. Yachiru also hops in sometimes much to many's confusion. (One of the others: "Yeah. You learn not to question it.") (This is obviously non-canon.)

•(In regards to Bleach) What happens if two people go inside a gigai at the same time???

•Pre!Canon Izuku gets isekaied into Fantasy AU decides to essentially say fuck it to his old world and stay with found friend family adventuring and doing hero shit in the new world.

•Crack Vestige AU where Izuku and then Bakugo get to haunt people with their found ghost family when Melissa finally gets passed the quirk due to shenanigans. Scenes & further shenanigans occur but not sad shit because fuck that noise.

•(In relation to last point) Fucming Vestige Bakugou & Izuku going whole ham on Shiggy, just decimating his shit. AFO steps in and then there's Yoichi coming in from behind with the steel chair-

Cut to her and the protag together as they proceed wreck the local illegal street racing circuit all the while trying to get back the protag's honour or something like that and maybe somehow catch up with the mysterious cryptid racer 'Truck-kun' so they get dragon lady home. There's mutual idiots in love, someone tries to murder protag by ramming them off road in every race, cars routinely defy the laws of physics in increasingly riduculou ways, dragon lady has an epic duel with a giant robot. It's an utter mess call it something equally stupid like "Speed Demon" or smth. •Jirou Kyoka x Daredevil (???)
