millipede facts
Most millipedes are slow-moving detritivores
millipedes are some of the oldest known land animals. Some members of prehistoric groups, such as Arthropleura, grew to over 2 m (6+1⁄2 ft); the largest modern species reach maximum lengths of 27 to 38 cm (10+1⁄2 to 15 in).
The scientific study of millipedes is known as diplopodology, and a scientist who studies them is called a diplopodologist.
Other vernacular names include "thousand-legger" or simply "diplopod"
Approximately 12,000 millipede species have been described. Estimates of the true number of species on earth range from 15,000 to as high as 80,000.
Few species of millipede are at all widespread; they have very poor dispersal abilities, depending as they do on terrestrial locomotion and humid habitats. These factors have favoured genetic isolation and rapid speciation, producing many lineages with restricted ranges.
There are two major groups of millipedes whose members are all extinct: the Archipolypoda ("ancient, many-legged ones") which contain the oldest known terrestrial animals, and Arthropleuridea, and Arthropleuridea, which contain the largest known land invertebrates
The earliest known land creature, Pneumodesmus newmani, was an archipolypodan known from 1 cm (1⁄2 in) long fragment that lived 414 million years ago in the early Devonian, and has clear evidence of spiracles (breathing holes) attesting to its air-breathing habits.
Millipedes come in a variety of body shapes and sizes, ranging from 2 mm (1⁄16 in) to around 35 cm (14 in) in length, and can have as few as eleven to over three hundred segments. They are generally black or brown in colour, although there are a few brightly coloured species, and some have aposematic colouring to warn that they are toxic. Species of Motyxia produce cyanide as a chemical defence and are bioluminescent.
Body styles vary greatly between major millipede groups. In the basal subclass Penicillata, consisting of the tiny bristle millipedes, the exoskeleton is soft and uncalcified, and is covered in prominent setae or bristles. All other millipedes, belonging to the subclass Chilognatha, have a hardened exoskeleton. The chilognaths are in turn divided into two infraclasses: the Pentazonia, containing relatively short-bodied groups such as pill millipedes, and the Helminthomorpha ("worm-like" millipedes), which contains the vast majority of species, with long, many-segmented bodies.
Millipedes breathe through two pairs of spiracles located ventrally on each segment near the base of the legs. Each opens into an internal pouch, and connects to a system of tracheae. The heart runs the entire length of the body, with an aorta stretching into the head. The excretory organs are two pairs of malpighian tubules, located near the mid-part of the gut. The digestive tract is a simple tube with two pairs of salivary glands to help digest the food.

okay. how do i do this without resorting to cliche? you're still alive because of... other people. the sun. the clarity of the thin november air. is that all? because your brother's wrist fits inside the circle of your fingers. because you have to try again. because your childhood teddy bear has fur that is soft to the touch. is that all? because sometimes you wake up and feel rested. because sometimes you put together furniture that will serve you for another decade. because someone loves you. is that all? is that all?
ration them out like the last bars of halloween chocolate, the things that still have bite, that still find your soft underbelly and leave you open-stomached, weeping. soft underbelly. and if there's armour there too? where is the body uncalcified? where are you still found, and how can you bear it? the things that reach down your throat. that make you retch up your despair. what is it? you're still breathing. is that all? ask for more. talk me off another ledge. make me graceful and unfanged. what do you offer for my teeth, my sleep? it's too much. it's too much. because the trains still run even when you don't thank them, and you have to thank them, or try.

Taxon Tuesday #5: Chondrichthyes
Chondrichthyes is the class that holds cartilaginous fishes (sharks, rays, skates, etc.) They’ve been around for well over 400 million years. Oldies but goodies am I right? Some of their distinguishing features are: skeletons made mostly of cartilage; skin covered in tooth-like placoid scales or denticles; teeth that are regularly shed and replaced; a piece of anatomy in males called a “pelvic clasper”, used for courtship and mating (I’m not looking that up for you sorry ✌)
These uncalcified friends are found in the clade Gnathostomata (jaw-having vertebrates). Their cousins are Placoderms (extinct armored fishies) and Euteleostomes (bony boys - includes bony fishies and tetrapods, or land-walking friends).
Chondrichthyes itself is divided into two major subclasses. The first is Holocephali, which holds the single order Chimaeriformes...the order of the chimaeras. The second is Elasmobranchii, which holds 3 superorders, each of which hold 4 orders. Taxonomy is rarely this well-balanced. There are a lot of names, so I’ve drawn them in the picture below, with subtitles explaining what they contain. You will have to click on it to view it fully, because it’s extremely crowded :( Someday I will learn how to make these trees correctly.

Thorny devil
The thorny devil (Moloch horridus), also known commonly as the mountain devil, thorny lizard, thorny dragon, and moloch, is a species of lizard in the family Agamidae. The species is endemic to Australia. It is the sole species in the genus Moloch. It grows up to 21 cm (8.3 in) in total length (including tail), with females generally larger than males.
The females are larger than the males. Most specimens are coloured in camouflaging shades of desert browns and tans. These colours change from pale colours during warm weather to darker colours during cold weather. The thorny devil is covered entirely with conical spines that are mostly uncalcified.
The thorny devil is covered in hard, rather sharp spines that dissuade attacks by predators by making it difficult to swallow. It also has a false head on its back. When it feels threatened by other animals, it lowers its head between its front legs, and then presents its false head. Predators that consume the thorny devil include wild birds and goannas.
The female thorny devil lays a clutch of three to ten eggs between September and December. She puts these in a nesting burrow about 30 cm underground. The eggs hatch after about three to four months
An intimidating array of spikes covers the entire upper side of the body of the thorny devil. These thorny scales also help to defend it from predators. Camouflage and deception may also be used to evade predation. This lizard's unusual gait involves freezing and rocking as it moves about slowly in search of food, water, and mates
The names given to this lizard reflect its appearance: the two large horned scales on its head complete the illusion of a dragon or devil. The name Moloch was used for a deity of the ancient Near East, usually depicted as a hideous beast. The thorny devil also has other nicknames people have given it such as the "devil lizard", "horned lizard", and the "thorny toad".
The thorny devil is also equipped to harvest moisture in the dry desert following nighttime's extremely low temperatures and the subsequent condensation of dew. The process involves moisture contact, their hydrophilic skin surface structures with capillaries, and an internal transport mechanism.

A flying Wyvern cladogram made under the assumption that flying Wyverns are scansoriopterygids or a sister group. Which means that they only have three true fingers, and the rest are jointed appendages derived from a styliform or styliforms that I will call “pseudophalanges”.
It seems like there’s huge gaps in relation between existing species, so a lot of “closely related” genre are still quite distantly related.
Wyvern rex is the base of the tree and is canonically the common ancestor of all living flying wyverns (or at least shared a common ancestor). It’s a quadruped and already quite different from its scansoriopterygid relatives. It’s stance might have originally been used for a better method of tree climbing in its ancestors; switching from wing assisted incline running to grabbing the tree with the hands and pulling themselves up. The hand structure is quite different from most maniraptorians as a result (although I did consider making a cladogram based on how the true fingers are arranged in different species). The pseudophalanx of Wyvern Rex still greatly resembles a styliform and hasn’t quite become jointed yet. The descendants of Wyvern Rex then took to the ground and became bigger.
Tigrex is a natural progression of this trend. Being more or less unchanged.
The god wyverns Akantor and Ukanlos are basically this trend taken to an extreme. Their styliform is now a vestigial spike and they’re too big for gliding.
The cave wyverns gigginox and khezu are perhaps the most derived flying wyverns due to being adapted to spending most of their time in caves, and their weird life cycle. The ancestor of living cave wyverns had uncalcified neck and tail vertebrae, somewhat uncalcified and rather loosely structured skulls, two pseudophalanges, and a cloaca situated on the end of the tail like a soft shell turtle to be used as a suction cup. Baleful gigginox also suggests it used electricity. Gigginox is the most basal existing cave Wyvern due to its quadrupedal stance, but even it is quite derived. It’s skull is even less solid than khezu and it overall might not have a very calcified body.
Khezu I have made more derived. It evolved into a biped independently of most flying wyverns (although it still moves on all fours quite often) and digit three has fused with pseudophalanx one. Khezu also has little false toes on its ankles that I’ve chocked up to being fleshy spurs evolved to increase the sticky surface area of the foot.
Some people classify the cave wyverns as amphibians, which I think is valid.
Nargacuga is a rather simple wyvern. A quadruped with two pseudophalanges that have been adapted into blade like structures. Nargacuga actually doesn’t use them in combat and prey capture often. This, coupled with the fact that it’s a forest ambush predator, makes me think that they were evolved to instead cut through the underbrush. Nargacuga also has a beak, which is a sign of the increasing trend of evolving rostrums in flying wyverns. I think Nargacuga could also work as a distant relative of the ancestral cave wyvern.
The “massive shell wyverns”, legiana, raths, bazel, seregios, and astalos all have a common ancestor in my tree.
The “massive shell wyverns” are the basarios/gravios and the blos wyverns. They have wing structures not unlike their distant Yi qi relatives, with a massive third finger supporting the wing along with styliforms. They also have two pseudophalanges, although recently some basarios have been discovered with a third pseudophalanx.
Legiana is a very unique flying Wyvern. As it has ditched the hard carapace of most flying wyverns and taken the evolution of pseudophalanges to the extreme. Only digit one remains and the wing is supported by four pseudophalanges.
The raths, rathalos and rathian are the most well known flying wyverns which have enjoyed a lot of success and diversity rather recently. Possibly after the end of the ice age that UHC suggests. Their wings are vaguely structured like that of birds, with digits two and three having fused together as the main support of the wing. They also have three pseudophalanges. Osteoderms on the front of their second digit gives the impression of more fingers.
Bazelgeuse I’ve put as a basal member of the family that includes seregios and astalos, but it could also work as its own thing. The wing is supported by digits two and three fused together like the raths, or maybe just digit two, and digit three has been lost. All pseudophalanges have been lost as well in the favor of numerous stiff rods.
Astalos and seregios are the two existing members of a sort of weird group of omnipedal flying wyverns with jointed cranial structures and forked tail structures. Astalos has a wing arrangement similar to the massive shell wyverns, but seregios seems to have ditched this to use all three true fingers as hooks for climbing, and the wing is supported by four pseudophalanges much like legiana.
Barioth is a bit tricky for me as it’s a quadruped with only a single massive stiff pseudophalanx. It could be the sole surviving member of a ghost lineage of Tigrex relatives or a *very distant relative* of nargacuga that lost a pseudophalanx. I also just don’t like the idea it being a sister genre to nargacuga like Capcom suggests because they really aren’t very similar outside of being vaguely cat like.
Then there’s paolumu. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I’m going to be a bit crazy here and vouch for it to actually be a Wyvern and thus a dinosaur. It doesn’t have a lot of the unique features bats possess. Heterodont dentition isn’t unknown in dinosaurs (in fact, even tyrannosaurus was showing that it was evolving heterodonty). Paolumu’s air sack could also be derived from the air sack system saurischian dinosaurs posses.
EDIT
I have made a refined version with frontier flying wyverns you can see here.

i used to be really scared of taking medication, when i was into new age spirituality shit id read about how antidepressants blunts your emotions, and then i read on some spiritual forum website someone say once that antidepressants make it like hard to spiritually connect, basically sort of saying that you wouldnt be able to connect to your "spiritual side" and that your "pineal gland would get calcified", and then my own paranoid thoughts turned that into "if i ever take any kind of medication ever it will make all the effects of psychedelics go away, ill unrealize all the spiritual stuff i learned, and since my 'pineal gland' will be calcified ill hafta start over with 'uncalcifying' it" that ill basically go back to square one as far as my spirituality goes, and i've since stopped believing a lot of the new age shit, but the paranoia still lingered even if i didnt believe my 'pineal gland' could be 'calcified' anymore, but things had gotten to a point where if i didnt take medication i felt like id just spiral and go insane, and now im actually on anti depressants and mood stabilizers and... none of that stuff has gone away. i can still see geometric patterns in nature, i can still connect with the things i find spiritual- i was just convinced of this narrative by people using the fact others can easily get paranoid against them.
im really glad that i discovered vaush, and he revealed all the dog whistles and all the bullshit, ive realized a lot of this new age shit can be co opted and used as a pathway in the alt right pipeline. anything that makes you distrust science to such a degree, that makes you think history is flexible, that makes you abandon any kind of reason for the sake of a divine source to worship, that can convince you that academic sources arent "the only sources" will EASILY be co opted by right wingers and used to steer you down their pipeline. its why i went from new age stuff to conspiracy theories so easily. i was luckily never actually right wing so anything that would have tried to convince me that its okay to see anyone as lesser than id look suspiscious of, but i think this stuff really gos to show that its really, really easy for the alt right to prey on mentally ill people.
this is really important to recognize when trying to get people out of the alt right- theres two kinds of people who are in the alt right; the kind of person who genuinely believes this stuff, who is just fucking evil and thinks everyone but white cishets should suffer, and then theres the kind of person whos had ther mental illness preyed on, who "believes" in this stuff more or less to have a community, and they seek this community out usually because a lot of people on the left can be really fucking cutthroat about how perfect you should be all the time, so a lax community where they expect virtually nothing of you but that support their "cause"- this is why i complain all the time about people who only care about being on the left to be the perfect pristine lefty, because your attitude actively pushes people who could otherwise be on our side away. im not going to act like thats everyone who joins the alt right, some people genuinely hate minorities, but there are plenty of people in those spaces who would have otherwise been on our side if we didnt make being on the left like walking on eggshells. we have to replicate what the alt right has done but make it left leaning; demand nothing but that you support the cause of being progressive.

Okay your pineal gland? Completely uncalcified. Your third eye? Wide open. You're absolutely right and I'm a fucking fool. Caramelinda Cersei rights!!!! Also speaking of the Rocks women, who are the other two ladies from that shot in the trailer with Lazuli and Rococo? One of them looked like a religious figure and the other I felt like might be Amethar's first wife 🤔🤔
those four women are amethar's sisters! general rococoa, archmage lazuli, saint citrina, and princess sapphira respectively. princess sapphira is the one we know the least about. apparently amethar's dairy wife is named catherine ghee 👀
