CS WEEKLY: The Hot Rocks of Rio Caper Part 1

WOW am I late on these ones- almost a month behind. Oops. Finals season and being sick and all that. I’m getting these guys done on a plane…lets hope there aren’t too many typos w/out wifi. Alright- here we go with the Hot Rocks of Rio Caper (part 1)!

I actually adore this episode. This season is where we really get the ball rolling!! Like I said, we sort of have the formula and introduction out of the way and we can really start playing now >:)

Also some great capture scenes at the end/start of the two episodes

This is such a beautiful opening sequence. I LOVE that Carmen here is an unreliable narrator. That’s not something a lot of kid’s shows often do (I think b/c they think kids won’t be able to pick up on the fact that something they were shown was fake) but since then TOH has done it as well. It’s just a great look into Carmen’s mindset and it immediately sets the premise for the rest of the season (/show?) concerning looking for Carmen’s mother.

Pls she did poor young Shadow-san so dirty- she doesn’t remember him that young so I guess she just figured he had this super spindly beard/mustache combo which I find hilarious

LIL BABY CARMEN AND DADOWSAN…I know it isn’t real but damn is that cute

It’s also great to see Carmen be thrown so off-kilter by the S1 finale. It’s fantastic consequence to the whole…mother figure tried to murder me but she never saved me in the first place/guy who has sucked most of my life was the one who cared most of all the whole time scenario she uncovered

Le Chevre gets his casual wear!! Out of Carmen’s original classmates I think Antonio is the only one who doesn’t have a civilian disguise (until the taco truck)

I love this scene- its such a fun dynamic between Carmen and Player, plus it gives us a little insight into how they plan their capers. Carmen shrinking against the wall and putting her hood up, sneaking around- it shows that she isn’t always so bold and that she knows how to be subtle (ish- the red hoodie is a bit of a giveaway) when she needs to be.

(Side note- as I write this I’m technically in casual cosplay for Carmen’s outfit here with the red hoodie. I love wearing it!!)

CARMEN PUN UNAPPRECIATOR

After all these years….we’ve found Carmen AND Waldo

Carmen really is off her game here, even before she starts hallucinating. Right is the ONLY way Bowtie could have gone with that little disappearing trick- Carmen should know, considering all the lightpost/bus/whatever disappearances she pulls off with the same method.

The first time I watched this episode I didn’t notice that Carmen picked up two but only handed back one. Cool little trick she did

I do like the visuals, though- usually the faculty are all seated and stationary, but Brunt is pacing and Mael is faced away from her, standing and looking out the window (btw thats a window???). Cleo and Bellum are seated like normal, going through the regular rounds, but the positioning shows the suspicion of both Brunt and Mael.

Maelstrom is actually using a great manipulative tactic here- offering a mitigating factor with maybe some disagreements. He isn’t going all the way- still accusing her. But he’s offering her something to latch onto if she wanted to confess to a murder

This show could have flourished even more without the tv-y7 rating. Player definitely thinks Shadow-san is going to capture or kill her, but Carmen trusts Shadow-san, which is why she looks so horrified near the end when Shadow-san “betrays” her

I also like the little display of carmen’s fighting style. I think this is one of the best examples of it in the whole show. She tries at first to just get out/past El Topo at the door. Then she tries every exit she can think of, only fighting where she has to. She is TERRIBLE in tight/closed spaces…really a defensive fighter. Great fight as always and I LOVE fights where there are more than one person involved we get them so rarely 

Btw carmen taking off the hat and coat? BAD idea everyone knows an absence of red means she’s going to lose REAL bad smh

SOME AUSTERE (ACADEMY) THOUGHTS

It's been more than a year and boy did it feel good to hear that theme song again. The episode titles are now incorporated into the musical opener but Beatrice's epitaph still thankfully introduce the episodes.

We're thrown right back in the delightful comicotragic universe of the series what with Patrick Warburton's fourth-wall-breaking Lemony Snicket's quietly depressed comments, uncanny word explanations and narrative juxtapositions. Unlike the first episodes of the first season who held the difficult task of exposing the story and characters, these two installments do away quickly with the mandatory 'Previously on' by actually having the always hilarious Mr Poe (K. Todd Freeman) spell it out in a caricatural, ridiculous, obnoxious way. The show switches directors for each duo of episodes but manages to keep its wonderful, color-restrained palette and simplistic cinematography. Austere really nails in this particular department with the design of the depressive and crumbling titular school.

Narratively, on paper we're still in for the classic Olaf-in-his-latest-disguise-hatches-a-new-plan-to-steal-the-money formula but where The Austere Academy also works is by managing to avoid the repetitive feeling that plagued some of last season's episodes and it does so by making some smart choices. Enter Olivia (Sara Rue), a helpful librarian who is not from the books and is seemingly not from VFD but adheres to their principles, is poised to take on a seemingly bigger role and who is revealed to be closer to the orphans than what appears (a small and innocuous scene apparently unnoticed by the characters themselves). She is thankfully not the only decent person to try to help the Baudelaires - the episodes bring back fan-favorites Larry the Waiter (Patrick Breen) and Jacquelyn (Sara Canning) as well as introducing Jacques Snicket (Nathan Fillion), Lemony's own brother in an expanded role compared to the book. Of course, readers know what unfortunate events lie ahead and Lemony himself warns of dark days to come so we'd do well not to get attached too soon to these characters.

But they do help in providing that breath of fresh air to the show by developing its mythology and delving into the mystery of it. Lemony melancholically makes it clear that something prevents him from reuniting with his brother and several gems were thrown here and there about Prufrock and its former students and together they make quite the story. One has to wonder if Vice Principal Nero (Roger Bart) is in the know about VFD or something else. His portrayal, while faithful in general, is somewhat more nuanced than what it is in the books and that is not necessarily a bad thing - he may be as petty and as bad at playing the violin as his book counterpart but the show paints some rare strokes of human decency that are most welcome in not making him a complete caricature. Perhaps all of this insufferableness was injected into Kitana Turnbull's Carmelita Spats, Prufrock's equivalent of HBIC and an absolute brat.

Meanwhile Neil Patrick Harris develops his Count Olaf, managing to make him even more evil and menacing while retaining the sense of ridicule that has become part of his character but this time, Harris adds layers of grey. That becomes apparent in his scenes with Larry - arguably the only scenes where Olaf is really himself as he otherwise plays another character in disguise in front of the whole school and with the Baudelaires, adopts this menacing, scary persona to try to impress them. In this particular scene, Larry and Olaf face off about the conflict between them and Harris manages to convey, through Olaf's frustration and the use of the very grandiloquent kind of speech he so loathes, the faintest hint that he may have been once part of that secret organization too. And that he may be bitter about his expulsion from it. Could his story about being expelled from Prufrock be a beautiful metaphor for his real story with VFD ? Do we actually trust what breadcrumbs Olaf gives us in terms of the show's mythology ? See, that's the beauty of A Series of Unfortunate Events and it's very fortunate indeed that the show is able to nail this literary aspect that permeated the pages of the original material - the perpetual, ever growing questioning of one's beliefs. Of course, book readers will know the truth to it but Harris portrays Olaf well enough for viewers to catch on the fact that despite his feigned stupidity and ignorance, Olaf is quite clever.

Another scene that gives a glimpse of a more human Olaf is one of those rare unappreciated moments that fly by casual viewers but watch his interactions with the Hook-Handed Man (Usman Ally) and particularly this quiet scene at night where the two are allowed what is perhaps the most significant moment in establishing what Olaf's relationship with his troop really is. Not only does it help develop and humanize both characters in a way the books didn't but could the Hook-Handed Man be actually hooked (pun intended) on Olaf in an unexpected way ? Did he put his hook on Olaf's knee in a quite awkward yet compassionate gesture ? Do we sense the seeds of admiration and other bizarre vibes in their scenes ? Did the show up the gay in it ? Was that a reference to a lesbian couple we heard ? In any case, it's a nice throwback to the first season that Hook-Handed Man still has a soft spot for Sunny.

Speaking of, Presley Smith now walks but remains the cutest and most savage baby on screen right now. Not sure how to feel about the walking since the actual book scene was a pretty powerful one but the show still retains enough faithfulness to include a sleeping-on-a-salad Sunny - one of the most hilarious visuals from the books. Along with their sister, Violet (Malina Weissman) and Klaus (Louis Hynes - whose character ironically addresses a growth spurt when he is actually the one towering over Weissman) continue to be the heart of the show. Harris may get top-billing but both Weissman and Hynes continue to hold themselves well against him and their final face off is a delight. Still, it'd be nice if the show remembered that, however good it is to see all three siblings working together, Violet is actually the eldest and the most mature. That particular aspect was integral to her book counterpart and was briefly touched in the adaptation of The Miserable Mill but here it seems as Klaus is either the same age or even older when this is not the case.

The strongest asset Austere Academy boasts however, comes in the form of the Quagmire Triplets, Isadora (Avi Lake) and Duncan (Dylan Kingwell). While Kingwell takes a step back, Lake really shines in her role and while the Quagmires' time with the Baudelaires is short-lived, they become integral to the story - both narrative-wise as they set off the Baudelaires on a quest that will hopefully reduce the sense of repetition even further but also because once again, the show expands their backstory, following on the heels of last season which introduced their late parents by now establishing them as confirmed acquaintances of Mr and Mrs Baudelaire but also Olaf himself. Of course, the show couldn't help but plant the seeds of young infatuation (we do not dare say the L word yet) and it's another deviation from the original material that for once we're skeptical of, but we're willing to give it the benefit of a doubt if it gives us those too rare sibling-teasing/bonding moments. The Quagmires not only serve as the Baudelaires' strongest allies in a long time, they are also the providers of the first real answers to the mysteries of the show - unfortunately, unlike us viewers, the Baudelaires are not with the Quagmires to see these answers and they certainly cannot rewind at will and hit the pause button to make a good screenshot of an interesting book.

That's where we leave them at the end of these two season openers, a feeling of dread and dryness coated with a sense of depression at how unfortunate these series of events really are, with Lemony emphasizing how bad all of it looks. Still, we're in for a wild ride. Um, excuse us, run.
