The first female to be appointed Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Massachusetts (UMass), Viviane Barfield worked to upgrade the women's athletic program. After a disagreement with Athletic Director Frank McInerney over her job description, Barfield filed a class action complaint against the university. After resigning, Barfield took the position of Director for the Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Dept. at the University of Minnesota. During her tenure, administration performed a compliance study of the Title IX regulations and asked that $1.7M be added to the women's athletic program. Barfield campaigned heavily for the additional funding, saying "You can change attitudes about women's sports or you can change legislation...It has been left to women all along to make do. Well, we can't just make do any more.
