I already said it yesterday but holy shit dude this actually just fucking slaps. This is like near Symphogear-tier to me.

To follow up on a couple things I said in my previous post about this: I did grow to like Top Road by the end, which is great, given that she's the main character and all. I like the idea of the expectations placed upon her not as an asset but as a burden she had to shed in order to really find value in running how *she* wanted to run. It's a common theme in stuff like this, learning to do something because you love it and not for anyone else's sake, but it's very well done here.

Done even better though with her rival Admire Vega, whose whole....Thing with her unborn sister whose spirit lives on within her. It's difficult by OVA's end to treat that as strictly a metaphor, it really does seem like she literally had a second soul in her body, but as a personification of not feeling like you're *allowed* to love victory, to love doing what you do, it's very effective. There is an entire bit during the final race where we peer into an abstract, conceptual space where Vega's sister explicitly releases her from her guilt and it's genuinely fucking beautiful. That, combined with Top Road's elated bawling once she actually wins the race(!!!) had me sobbing. I love feeling big feelings! It's what art is for! Fuck!

I could take issue with the fact that my girl T.M. Opera O kinda jobs at the end here but this isn't a post on a powerscaling subreddit so I don't really care. She takes the loss with grace and dignity, which is yet another reason she's the fucking GOAT. (Weird, considering she's a horsegirl.) She actually almost loses to a rando (at least within the context of this narrative) named Rapid Builder, but she at least pulls in a respectable bronze I think.

Anyway, great fucking OVA. The movie I was told is somehow even better than this is next on the list. At some point later in the year I wanna watch the main seasons of this, I know they're not as spectacularly polished in terms of production but I don't really care. I think I just actually really like this series in concept and body and want to experience more of it.

One more thing! The idol performance! That was kind of goofy and silly. The song itself was OK and I'm not gonna complain cuz it got me more pictures of Opera, but what a goofy note to follow up such a sincere and powerful finale with. (Not that idol performances themselves can't be sincere and powerful but this one felt more like a long credits roll, like Will Smith rapping theme songs to his own movies.) I'm not really upset by it but it took me by surprise. I somehow forgot this series included anything remotely idol-related at all.
