In other revisionist dub news (of much lesser historical import), Tsuburaya is ordering a redo of the Ultraman Zero films. The opening text of the article makes it sound like they've never been dubbed before, but no, William Winckler Productions did 'em all in 2017, and Mill Creek released them to Blu-ray in 2021. This time, the same dubbing group that worked on the most recent Ultra Series installments, OkaTron 5000, is handling them. Incredibly, Daniel Van Thomas will be in both versions, switching from Ultraman Zero to Rei. His comments do acknowledge the first dubs, natch.

The Winckler Ultraman dubs I've heard weren't great (lots of unnatural pauses in sentences), and Ultraman's Big International Push has now consigned them to history. Wonder if this means Mill Creek will reissue the Zero set (dub preservationists, grab it while you can).

If you could go back to school would you?

[laughs like a hyena] bold of you to assume i've ever left school. unfortunately i think i'm doomed to academic pursuits for the rest of my life. that said if i could i would go back and force myself to realise i cannot do applied maths, that would have saved me time.

can you parallel park?

yes :) i actually like driving, i find it calming.

a job you had that would surprise people?

i actually was an after-school tutor for elementary students for a year! it was terrible, because i get overstimulated very easily by children, who are loud and insistent, but they were all very sweet. i didn't get paid nearly as much as i would have liked, though.

do you think aliens are real?

i am an alien agnostic, by which i mean i haven't seen proof, but if i were to, yeah.

can you drive a manual car?

not at the moment but i could probably figure it out if i had to.

what's your guilty pleasure?

generally i feel no guilt for my pleasures but uh. i remembered i actively read the sci novel on purpose, so. yeah, that. (would not recommend)

not yet! i want a couple, though, when i have more time and money.

black and purple! and gold. and...........green and blue. i actually like a lot of colours haha.

favourite type of music?

i have been known to like mandopop u_u but i also like darkwave, goth, and anything that makes a compelling amv.

do you like puzzles?

i do! people used to gift me thousand piece plus puzzles when i was younger, and while they've mostly been lost in moves, i do think of them fondly.

any phobias?

lack of autonomy, which i think is a reasonable phobia. aside from that, no.

favourite childhood sport?

swimming! i was actually a decent competitive swimmer for years, and placed a number of times in regional meets (i didn't go any further because i hated having to be in meets due to the unique horrors of being wet and cold and half-nude around large crowds of people. and also life-related bullshit stressed me out so much i had to quit).

do you talk to yourself?

yes :) not as much as i used to because i live with people i'm not close to at the moment and i tend to stim a lot if i'm speaking to myself and i'd rather not have that conversation.

what movie(s) do you adore?

pacific rim (2013), the old guard (2020), the diptych finale of dijia aoteman/ultraman taiga (1997????) which isn't a film but was formative to my childhood.

tea!!!!! tea my beloved.............i will drink a lot of different types but i am a black tea lover at heart.

getting into reiwa

So, I'm a big fan of heisei Era tokusatsu, kamen rider W, being my all time favorite. Kamen rider Gavv recently began and I really enjoyed it, and it made me want to try watching more reiwa. And so, I watched the first few episodes of the following.

Avatoro Sentai Donbrothers is a very strange show. I have never been a huge super sentai fan, it's obviously for a younger audience than the typical Kamen rider or ultraman viewer, but it's still got plenty to appreciate. The absurdist humor and spectacle that is consistently keeping my eyes on the screen as to not miss out on any kooky action is great entertainment. The characters are a bit strange, but so far their chemistry is a blast to watch.

Kamen Rider Geats is an amazing show. It has a decent chance at topping W as my favorite tokusatsu series. Geats has a great premise that let's it's characters really flesh out the themes of desire through conflict and setting. Every single character in this show is charming and lovable, and it's great to see them bicker and team up. It's got an amazing fake out that I will not spoil because I never saw it coming, and it was a beautiful moment to behold.

Kamen Rider Zero-One. There's not a whole lot I can say about this show. A big part of zero-one is that the protagonist is a comedian who constantly makes puns, but the puns are in Japanese and lost on me, and I feel that kind of ruined my experience. Another issue with the show is that I feel the main character doesn't really fit in to the rest of the ideas or the message of the show. Is the show about capitalism? Authoritarianism? Transhumanjsm? The value of joy?? I really don't get it. Even if the writing isn't great, the cinematography and production is stunning. There are interesting camera angles, the shooting during action sequences Is done well so you can not only understand the action, but also understand how the characters feel during combat, the cg is actually visually appealing.

Ultraman Taiga isn't exactly my type of thing. I wasn't super invested in the characters or their motivations, because I was always waiting for the kaiju to appear and for ultraman to wrestle it, and god is it great to watch. Everytime there is a kaiju appearance, it's always from the perspective of a person on the ground or from afar, it really helps you get a sense of scale and urgency that this huge monster is rampaging or more sympathetically lost and afraid, causing casualties in an unfamiliar place. And Taiga is unique from most reiwa tokusatsu productions in that it doesn't rely as heavily on cgi, opting for more traditional production techniques. With scale model buildings that crumble when hiroyuki is toppled over, pretty decent stunt choreography, actors performing in kaiju suits, and onset pyrotechnics. Its great to know that more traditional productions are still being made in the reiwa Era.

Ultraman Rising is beautiful. Everything about it. The designs, the characters, the colors, the themes and story, everything. I'm surprised at how much time is taken to adress personal conflict in this movie, I was expecting a whole lot of action, but I love that it is this way. A story about a man who can turn big, but feels deeply that he is small and helpless, learning to overcome that through parenthood and comraderie, and learning to protect his ideals and his family.

GO WATCH IT.

my deadname was that of my mom's first student she got attached to (and my brother too, just the male one) and the current one isn't written that way and not used that way but i'd be lying if i didn't think of Taiga as a name because of Saejima "ya gotta go balls out" Taiga from the Yakuza games

2. when was the last time you cried?

uh yesterday? we watched Mebius Ghost Rebirth/Armored Darkness and is there anything more romantic than when two boys henshin together into one??? i think not. i got a lil misty eyed (if you want cry-cry it was two weeks ago watching the Mebius finale with the squad lol)

hell no

4. what sports do you play/have you played?

I used to play basketball! mostly street basketball because I'm short and have no stamina but I was pretty decent

One the earlier concepts I had for a character that would eventually evolve into my three major ocs Akari and the Morimoto twins.

was a young orphan who was a test-subject that escaped from a lab and she later gets found and adopted by an amnesic Ultra who calls himself Del (from the word Delphic) his real identity was going to be a known Ultraman. who was stranded on a kaiju riddled post-apocalyptic Earth, the ultra was human size for the most part wouldn't have a human disguise cos he couldn't remember how to turn human due to the amnesia and would instead wear baggy clothes and a gas mask as a disguise.

I got pretty far in the lore the girl's name would've been Miru and the big twist was going to be that Del was actually an amnesiac and darkness free Tregear who somehow survived the ending of the Taiga movie but got expelled into another dimension.

1: How did you get into toku?

at some point almost exactly a year ago now i saw... i think it was venterry? posting about kamen rider den-o. i tried to watch it but i couldnt figure out how torrenting works so it wasnt until a month later in october that i found it on Internet Archive (RIP COMPLETE TOKU LIBRARY) and watched all of den-o there along with some of the movies. and i liveblogged it in a discord server im in with my close friends (if youve ever seen me talk about "corners" or "gloopies" thats what i mean) and i dragged them all into the dark with me. and then in february i watched half of ultraman geed and then for some reason just stopped. and then ultraman rising came out and i watched it and went Oh this is actually the best thing ever and now im on a mission to watch every ultraman thing i can find. and the rest is history

7: Favorite villain?

like with favorite main character a lot of them are tied for a lot of different reasons. the answer to this question is Tregear from Taiga because he was created in a lab by experts with decades of experience to drive me insane in a way nobody else understands. but i also really like Makoto Aizen from R/B and Kuroto Dan from Ex-Aid because they are incredibly fascinating and strange. i dont think i have a strong opinion on a lot of other villains its mostly side characters that charm me in toku shows as far as ive noticed ....

He is just too cool I am a sucker for the grittier suit designs and biomechanical vibes AHHH he even has like moving mouth pieces and tail and his red form is cool tooooo

For actual villains I think I'll give it to Taiga from Kiva (Kiva spoilers below):

He comes a bit late in the story but I think he's a well written sympathetic villain and I'm a sucker for those.

He fits Kiva's themes of "breaking the chains of societal expectations and roles whose labels only suffocate those they are placed upon" to a T because all of his problems essentially stem from his inability to separate himself and his wants and needs from his duties as King. Despite being the King which should mean he has the freedom to do anything he wants all it really does is make him a slave to the title and it's so fittingly tragic to the story Kiva wants to tell.

Taiga is clearly just a guy that wants to love and be loved which comes from his abandonment issues and being raised by a man he DOES love (Shima) but he still just feels constantly rejected because even though Shima does care for Taiga all Taiga can see is Shima's hatred for the fangire race. The family and relationship drama is strong with this guy and I was HERE FOR IT.

They could have killed Taiga to contrast him and Wataru as people who could and couldn't break from their roles but I like happy endings so when they redeem him instead with the more optimistic messaging if how accepting love can change you for the better (which is another theme of Kiva being shown a lot through the OtaYuriJiro dynamic) I was quite pleased with the resolution of his character arc. The contrast still exists too because Bishop fills the role of "the one who could not break from their societal expectations"

In shorter terms tragic character who I just wanted to give a hug who felt perfectly fitting for the things Kiva wanted to say

Also Saga is cool, the fencer style is fun, his finisher is badass and Roots of the King is a banger
